The Chimp Optimization Algorithm (ChOA) is a cutting-edge swarm intelligence algorithm that models the social status ties and hunting behavior of chimps to solve complex optimization problems. Although ChOA is known for its simplicity and efficiency, it may encounter challenges such as convergence speed and local optima. This study presents a comprehensive and competitive multi-strategy-enhanced chimp optimization algorithm (SLDChOA), which comprehensively enhances the optimization performance of the algorithm through four strategies. Firstly, a low-difference Sobol sequence strategy is used to initialize the chimp population to increase the diversity of the initial population. Secondly, different location update strategies are adopted according to different iteration stages. The early iteration stage employs the Lévy flight-based location update strategy to help chimps explore the space more abundantly and improve the global search ability of the algorithm. In contrast, the proposed probability-based elitist operation strategy is used in the late iteration stage to help the chimps obtain higher-quality optimal solutions and improve the convergence accuracy and speed of the algorithm. Finally, the dimension learning-based hunting search strategy is introduced to facilitate information sharing among chimps and enable the algorithm to jump out of the local optimum effectively. To demonstrate its comprehensive performance, SLDChOA is compared with 17 state-of-the-art algorithms on 23 traditional benchmark functions, CEC 2014 and CEC 2019 test sets (totaling 63 test functions). Moreover, its efficacy and excellence are further demonstrated in 4 well-known engineering optimization issues and 2 feature selection problems of multimodal Parkinson's speech datasets. Craquelure is the most common defect on ancient polychrome paintings, which may deteriorate further to paint loss. Previous image processing methods, which can accurately recognize paint loss, have limited precision and efficiency in segmenting craquelure. This paper proposes a semantic segmentation method, Res-UNet, for the recognition of craquelure and paint loss in the Palace Museum, Beijing. The residual structure of ResNet-50 enables the avoidance of network degradation, and image features can be fully extracted. Using the unique skip connection module of U-Net, features of different levels are fused to improve segmentation accuracy and provide smoother craquelure edges. Three loss functions are combined to accelerate stable convergence. The model was tested on a newly built dataset based on 600 images. Experimental results supported by statistical tests show that Res-UNet is a capable method of craquelure recognition, with an accuracy rate of 98.19%, and F1-score of 93.42%. Arctigenin (Arc) is a phenylpropanoid dibenzylbutyrolactone lignan in Arctium lappa L, which has been widely applied as a traditional Chinese herbal medicine for treating inflammation. In the present study, we explored the neuroprotective effect and the potential mechanisms of arctigenin against LPS-evoked neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration, and memory impairments in the mice hippocampus. Daily administration of arctigenin (50 mg/kg per day, i.g.) for 28 days revealed noticeable improvements in spatial learning and memory deficits after exposure to LPS treatment. Arctigenin prevented LPS-induced neuronal/synaptic injury and inhibited the increases in Abeta (Aβ) generation and the levels of amyloid precursor protein (APP) and β-site amyloid precursor protein cleavage enzyme 1 (BACE1). Moreover, arctigenin treatment also suppressed glial activation and reduced the production of proinflammatory cytokines. In LPS-treated BV-2 microglial cells and mice, activation of the TLR4 mediated NF-κB signaling pathway was significantly suppressed by arctigenin administration. Mechanistically, arctigenin reduced the LPS-induced interaction of adiponectin receptor 1 (AdipoR1) with TLR4 and its coreceptor CD14 and inhibited the TLR4-mediated downstream inflammatory response. The outcomes of the current study indicate that arctigenin mitigates LPS-induced apoptotic neurodegeneration, amyloidogenesis and neuroinflammation as well as cognitive impairments, and suggest that arctigenin may be a potential therapeutic candidate for neuroinflammation/neurodegeneration-related diseases. A new type of Galerkin finite element for first-order initial-value problems (IVPs) is proposed. Both the trial and test functions employ the same m-degreed polynomials. The adjoint equation is used to eliminate one degree of freedom (DOF) from the test function, and then the so-called condensed test function and its consequent condensed Galerkin element are constructed. It is mathematically proved and numerically verified that the condensed element produces the super-convergent nodal solutions of O(h2m+2), which is equivalent to the order of accuracy by the conventional element of degree m + 1. Some related properties are addressed, and typical numerical examples of both linear and nonlinear IVPs of both a single equation and a system of equations are presented to show the validity and effectiveness of the proposed element. Reduced salinity is a major factor that causes macrobenthic degradation in reclaimed wetlands. We investigated populations of the sesarmid crab Chiromantes dehaani in reclaimed and natural wetlands. Then, in the laboratory, we exposed male and female crabs to four salinity levels (0, 6, 12 and 18) for 96 h to analyse the effects of reduced salinity on osmoregulatory enzyme activities in the posterior gills and digestive and immune enzyme activities in the hepatopancreas of C. dehaani. The results revealed a significant positive correlation between the number of crabs and salinity. In the laboratory, we found that the isosmotic point of C. dehaani was close to 16 ppt. The crabs showed strong hyper-osmotic regulation when exposed to 0–6 ppt salinities. Moreover, in this salinity range, amylase activities were significantly inhibited. Under low-salinity stress, the immune enzyme activities were significantly activated. However, phenoloxidase and lysozyme activities were inhibited in the freshwater environment. The male and female crabs showed no significant differences in most of the enzyme activities. Thus, reduced salinity can adversely affect the digestive and immune functions of C. dehaani, which may cause population degradation in reclaimed wetlands. To check if it is possible for crayfish to reduce the weed biomass in a paddy field, we hypothesised that crayfish can feed on common weeds in a paddy field. The feeding ability of red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, males and females for 4 weeds, Ludwigia prostrata Roxb., Leptochloa chinensis (L.) Nees, Echinochloa crusgalli (L.) Beauv and Eclipta prostrata L., commonly found in rice–crayfish fields were evaluated using a quantitative feeding experiment and behaviour observation experiment. The results of the quantitative feeding and behaviour experiments were highly consistent. The P. clarkii gender and weed species had no interactive effects on survival rate, the daily feed intake (FI) and percentage of daily feed intake (PFI). The results of the quantitative feeding experiment showed that the FI and PFI values of both P. clarkii females and males were significantly higher in the P. clarkii feed group than in the weed treatment group. Both FI and PFI were significantly higher in the L. chinensis group than in the other treatment groups. The survival rate of P. clarkii was significantly lower in the E. crusgalli group than in the other treatment groups. The behaviour observation experiment showed that the feeding frequency and duration were in the order of L. chinensis > E. prostrata > L. prostrata > E. crusgalli. Blind motion deblurring is one of the most basic and challenging problems in image processing and computer vision. It aims to recover a sharp image from its blurred version knowing nothing about the blurring process. Many existing methods use the maximum a posteriori or expectation maximization framework to tackle this problem, but they cannot handle well the natural images with high-frequency features. Most recently, deep neural networks have been emerging as a powerful tool for image deblurring. In this paper, we show that encoder–decoder architecture gives better results for image deblurring tasks. In addition, we propose a novel end-to-end learning model that refines the generative adversarial network by many novel strategies to tackle the problem of image deblurring. The input of organic substances (e.g., rice straw) in rice field soils usually stimulates the production and emission of the greenhouse gas methane (CH4). However, the amount of CH4 derived from the applied rice straw, as well as the response of bacterial and archaeal communities during the methanogenic phase, are poorly understood for different rice field soils. In this study, samples of five different rice soils were amended with 13C-labeled rice straw (RS) under methanogenic conditions. Immediately after RS addition, the RS-derived CH4 production rates were higher in soils (Uruguay, Fuyang) that possessed a stronger inherent CH4 production potential compared with other soils with lower inherent potentials (Changsha, the Philippines, Vercelli). However, soils with higher inherent potential did not necessarily produce higher amounts of CH4 from the RS applied, or vice versa. Quantitative PCR showed copy numbers of both bacteria and methanogens increased in straw-amended soils. High-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes showed distinct bacterial communities among the unamended soil samples, which also changed differently in response to RS addition. Nevertheless, RS addition generally resulted in all the rice field soils in a relative increase of primary fermenters belonging to Anaerolineaceae and Ruminococcaceae. Meanwhile, RS addition also generally resulted in a relative increase of Methanosarcinaceae and/or Methanocellaceae. Our results suggest that after RS addition the total amounts of RS-derived CH4 are distinct in different rice field soils under methanogenic conditions. This paper presents a vacuum encapsulation technique and stability characterization for MEMS resonator. Sn-rich Au-Sn solder bonding is used to achieve reliable hermetic packaging with high shear strength. Simple planar feedthrough structure is utilized to achieve electrical interconnection and low cost of packaging. The stabilities of the encapsulated resonator are systematically studied, including frequency stability, temperature stability, long-term hermeticity, and mechanical reliability. The short-term and medium-term frequency stability are ± 0.4 and ± 3 ppm, respectively. The temperature cycle test is introduced between − 20 and 80 °C, and the resonant-frequency drift of the packaged resonator is within ± 4 ppm between 40 temperature cycles. Furthermore, the packaged resonator is temperature compensated by micro-oven, which obtained a frequency stability range of ± 13 ppm between 20 and 100 °C. The (GaN)1−x(ZnO)x solid solution is an ideal material for the next generation photocatalyst due to good chemical stability and excellent optical property. Although full range content regulation of ZnO has been achieved, the isomeric phenomena of solid solutions make it difficult to establish a structure–property relationship. Here, we constructed a series of random (GaN)1−x(ZnO)x structures and calculated the band properties using DFT. Seven supervised machine learning models were trained to understand band properties base on microstructure. The results show that the Random Forest Regressor model is optimal for predicting band gap and band edge position with proposed microstructure descriptors. Feature importance and SHAP analyses indicate four local microstructures are main structural factors influencing band structure. Group blind signature (GBS) is the combination of group signature and blind signature (BS) concepts [1]. GBS allows any member of the group to generate a valid signature on behalf of the group, and the signer as a group member has no knowledge of the specific content of the message he or she is signing. In order to improve the suitability of group blind signatures for practical applications, it is significant to study GBS schemes that can flexibly add and remove group members. Therefore, in this article, we will propose a dynamic quantum group blind signature (QGBS) scheme based on four-particle cluster states. Cluster states are characterized by maximum connectivity and continuous entanglement. Some quantum technologies provide unconditional security for our scheme, such as quantum one-time pad (QOTP) and quantum key distribution protocol. If there is a dispute about who generated the signature, our scheme can identify the signer by opening the signature. Intraspecific male-male aggression, which is important for sexual selection, is regulated by environment, experience and internal states through largely undefined molecular and cellular mechanisms. To understand the basic neural pathway underlying the modulation of this innate behavior, we established a behavioral assay in Drosophila melanogaster and investigated the relationship between sexual experience and aggression. In the presence of mating partners, adult male flies exhibited elevated levels of aggression, which was largely suppressed by prior exposure to females via a sexually dimorphic neural mechanism. The suppression involved the ability of male flies to detect females by contact chemosensation through the pheromone-sensing ion channel ppk29 and was mediated by male-specific GABAergic neurons acting on the GABAA receptor RDL in target cells. Silencing or activating this circuit led to dis-inhibition or elimination of sex-related aggression, respectively. Absorption of a light particle by an opsin-pigment causes photoisomerization of its retinaldehyde chromophore. Restoration of light sensitivity to the resulting apo-opsin requires chemical re-isomerization of the photobleached chromophore. This is carried out by a multistep enzyme pathway called the visual cycle. Accumulating evidence suggests the existence of an alternative visual cycle for regenerating opsins in daylight. Here we identified dihydroceramide desaturase-1 (DES1) as a retinol isomerase and an excellent candidate for isomerase-2 in this alternative pathway. DES1 is expressed in retinal Müller cells, where it coimmunoprecipitates with cellular retinaldehyde binding protein (CRALBP). Adenoviral gene therapy with DES1 partially rescued the biochemical and physiological phenotypes in Rpe65?/? mice lacking isomerohydrolase (isomerase-1). Knockdown of DES1 expression by RNA interference concordantly reduced isomerase-2 activity in cultured Müller cells. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) identified multiple single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are associated with the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). As replication in independent studies remains the only way to validate proposed GWAS signals, we detect SNPs reported in the GWAS, in order to explore their association with sporadic AD (SAD) in the Chinese population. We analyzed genotype and allele distributions of 19 SNPs reported in GWAS in 191 SAD patients and 180 healthy controls. We found that higher frequencies of rs10868366 G and rs7019241 C carriers were observed in SAD patients compared with controls (rs10868366 G: P = 0.026, odds ratio (OR) = 1.4, 95% confidence intervals (CI) 1.0-1.9; rs7019241 C: P = 0.019, OR 1.4, 95% CI 1.6-1.9). Furthermore, rs10868366 G/T and rs7019241 C/T in GOLPH2 were in strong linkage disequilibrium and formed a relative protective factor rs10868366 T/rs7019241 T and a relative risk factor rs10868366 G/rs7019241 C. For SNP rs3826656 in near gene 5′ region of CD33, the results revealed that in subjects with APOE ε4 alleles, the A allele was associated with a reduced risk of SAD compared with the G allele (OR 0.479; 95% CI 0.263-0.870, P = 0.015), and AA genotype was associated with a reduced risk of SAD compared with the genotype AG + GG (OR 0.395; 95% CI 0.158-0.659, P = 0.008). Our results support the view that rs10868366 and rs7019241 in GOLPH2 and rs3826656 in near gene 5′ region of CD33 are significantly associated with SAD in the north Chinese Han population. n electrostatically driven tunable radio frequency (RF) inductor with large inductance tuning range consisting of electroplated soft magnetic permalloy (NiFe alloy) plate was proposed in this paper. The fabricated tunable inductor exhibits a large tunable inductance range up to 77.8%, together with improved quality factor (Q-factor) at high frequencies. Such tunability of inductance and Q-factor was due to the magnetoelectric coupling effect between the soft magnetic permalloy plate and the spiral inductor, which lead to the magnetic flux of the inductor and mutual inductance change. Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are a novel class of composite materials that have attracted significant attention in the field of engineering due to their unique mechanical properties. This study aims to explore the dynamic behaviors of an FGM stepped beam with different boundary conditions based on an efficient solving method. Under the assumptions of the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the governing differential equations of an individual FGM beam are derived with Hamilton's principle and decoupled via the separation-of-variable approach. Then, the free and forced vibrations of the FGM stepped beam are solved with the transfer matrix method (TMM). Two models, i.e., a three-level FGM stepped beam and a five-level FGM stepped beam, are considered, and their natural frequencies and mode shapes are presented. To demonstrate the validity of the method in this paper, the simulation results by ABAQUS are also given. On this basis, the detailed parametric analyses on the frequencies and dynamic responses of the three-level FGM stepped beam are carried out. The results show the accuracy and efficiency of the TMM. Bacterial species within the Acinetobacter baumannii-calcoaceticus (Acb) complex are very similar and are difficult to discriminate. Misidentification of these species in human infection may lead to severe consequences in clinical settings. Therefore, it is important to accurately discriminate these pathogens within the Acb complex. Raman spectroscopy is a simple method that has been widely studied for bacterial identification with high similarities. In this study, we combined surfaced-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) with a set of machine learning algorithms for identifying species within the Acb complex. According to the results, the support vector machine (SVM) model achieved the best prediction accuracy at 98.33% with a fivefold cross-validation rate of 96.73%. Taken together, this study confirms that the SERS-SVM method provides a convenient way to discriminate between A. baumannii, Acinetobacter pittii, and Acinetobacter nosocomialis in the Acb complex, which shows an application potential for species identification of Acinetobacter baumannii-calcoaceticus complex in clinical settings in near future. Recently, many new rice–fish co-culture models have been developed to increase economic and ecological benefits. In this study, we added eels (Monopterus albus) to a rice–crayfish system and conducted a 3-year field investigation to compare the yields and availability of fertilizer N among groups with a low density of eels, high density of eels and no eels. We performed a mesocosm experiment and used an isotope tracer technique to detect the fate of fertilizer N. The results showed that the rice yields significantly improved after the introduction of the eels. However, the introduction of a high density of eels significantly limited the crayfish yield, increased water N and N2O emissions and decreased soil N content. The mesocosm experiment suggested that the use efficiency of fertilizer N was significantly increased after the introduction of the eels. The fertilizer N used by rice was significantly higher in rice–crayfish–eel system than in rice–crayfish system. This study indicated that the introduction of eels may be a good practice for improving yields and availability of fertilizer N in a rice–crayfish system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Resonators with multi-frequency generations at the device-level are highly desired in the future multi-band, reconfigurable, and compact wireless communications. In this work, a switchable radio frequency micro-electro-mechanical system (RF-MEMS) resonator with multiple electrodes is presented. The resonator is designed to operate at the whispering gallery modes (WGMs). Simultaneous excitations of the second to seventh modes with high Q values are implemented within a single device using a pair of electrodes for driving and sensing. For effective multi-frequency excitations, the electrode span angle is optimized. The frequencies of the 37 μm and 18 μm-radius resonators range from 53 MHz to 176 MHz and 112 MHz to 366 MHz, respectively. The Q values in each mode are over 104. Moreover, with the multi-electrode configurations, the specific mode can be enhanced with other modes suppressed. A more than 6 dB improvement of the spectrum peak is realized and the high Q values are maintained. A comprehensive theory is built up to clarify the driving/sensing principles under different electrode configurations. Furthermore, the air damping is found to have a significant effect on Q values for resonator with high stiffness vibrating in all the WGMs. The Q values in vacuum have at least two times improvement. The high-performance switchable resonator could dramatically reduce the power consumption, simplify the processing circuits, and occupy less footprint, which has great potential applications in future advanced RF front end systems. Primary pulmonary sarcoma (PPS) is a rare and poor prognostic malignancy that results from current clinical studies are lacking. Our study aimed to investigate the prognostic factors of PPS and to construct a predictive nomogram that predict the overall survival (OS) rate. We extracted data on patients diagnosed with PPS from 2010 to 2019 in the SEER database. A total of 169 patients were included after screening by inclusion and exclusion criteria. Univariate and multivariate COX regression analyses showed that age, pathological grade, liver metastasis, surgical intervention, and chemotherapy influenced the prognosis. We constructed the prediction model nomogram based on these factors. Moreover, the results of the internal and external ROC curves, calibration curves, and DCA plots confirmed that the model has good discrimination, accuracy, and clinical practice efficacy. The present study is the first population-based study to explore the factors affecting the prognosis of PPS. Voice coil motor (VCM) has obvious rate-dependent hysteresis characteristics, which means that when the frequency of the input signal changes, the travel distance and the shape of the hysteresis loop will change significantly. Based on the Nonlinear Auto-Regressive with Exogenous Inputs (NARX) neural network model, a rate-dependent hysteresis model consisting of a transfer function sub-model of the VCM and a NARX neural network sub-model is proposed for VCM in this paper. Different from the commonly used rate-dependent operator model, the proposed model has a relatively simple mathematic format. By introducing the transfer function of VCM, the initial prediction of the amplitude and phase shift is realized dynamically, which ensures the nonlinear fitting effect of the NARX neural network. Comparisons of the model responses with the measured data under different frequencies of input current signals indicate that the proposed model can dynamically describe the nonlinear rate-dependent hysteresis of VCM with very high accuracy. On this basis, the inverse model is designed by adopting the method of direct inverse, and the effectiveness of the inverse model in trajectory tracking is preliminarily verified by simulation. Demineralized dentin matrix (DDM) is an osteoconductive and osteoinductive material that has been successfully used in sinus floor augmentation and alveolar ridge augmentation in clinical applications. It releases bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) and other growth factors, making DDM a suitable grafting material. However, the granular particle of DDM makes it difficult to anchor into the bone defect area. The aim of this study was to investigate the biological effects and osteoinductivity of the combination of DDM and Fibrin Glue (FG) at an optimal ratio on bone healing from a critical bone defect in an animal model. The mouse osteoblastic cell line (MC3T3-E1) was co-cultured with various ratios of DDM and FG to examine their effects on osteoblast proliferation and differentiation, as indicated by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, osteocalcin (OC) production and mineralized nodules formation. The optimal ratio was then chosen for further study with a rabbit calvarial defective model, in which they were implanted with DDM or DDM-FG1 (1 g: 0.1 ml) and DDM-FG2 (1 g: 0.5 ml) compounds, or left blank for 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks to investigate soft tissue and new bone regeneration. Micro-CT and histology analysis were used to evaluate the total grafting properties according to the different healing periods. The result from in vitro studies demonstrated that the ratio of 1:0.1 induced more ALP activity and mineralized nodules, while the ratio of 1: 0.5 (DDM-FG combined) induced more osteocalcin (OC) at specific time points. In the animal model, the 3D new bone volume in all DDM-FG treatment groups was significantly greater than that in the blank group at 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks. Furthermore, the new bone volume was greater in DDM-FG2 when compared to the other groups during the early weeks of the healing period. In histological analysis, clusters of osteoblasts were formed adjacent to the DDM particles, and newly formed bone was observed in all groups, suggesting an osteoinductive property of DDM. Moreover, the greater new collagen synthesis observed at 4 weeks suggested that early bone healing was induced in the DDM-FG2 group. Shrub removal is a common management method in forest ecosystems, but comparatively little is known regarding the effects of shrub removal on soil microbial communities among primary forest, secondary forest, and plantation forests in temperate forests, which limits our accurate assessment of sustainable management of understory vegetation removal. Given this, we used a long-term operation experiment across a contrasting mixed broadleaved-Pinus koraiensis forest, Betula platyphylla forest, and Larix gmelinii plantation forest to explore the variations of soil properties and microbial community after 5 years of shrub removal on Changbai Mountain, as well as the contribution of the soil properties and understory plant diversity to the soil microbial community. The results demonstrated that shrub removal could significantly alter soil SWC and TN, TP, and AP contents of the L. gmelinii, as well as N/P of B. platyphylla. Moreover, shrub removal also clearly improved soil bacterial Pielou_e index and Simpson index of mixed broadleaved-P. koraiensis and soil bacterial Simpson index of L. gmelinii, and decreased soil fungal Pielou_e index and Shannon index of L. gmelinii and soil bacterial Pielou_e index and soil fungal Shannon index of B. platyphylla. Identically, shrub removal notably altered the soil bacterial community composition. Soil characteristics and understory plant diversity accounted for 48.02% and 26.88%, and 45.88% and 27.57% of the variance in the bacterial and fungal community composition, respectively. This paper presents a novel digitally tunable micro-electro-mechanical systems disk resonator with multiple split electrodes. Multiple whispering gallery modes (WGM) can be excited with various electrode combinations and different frequencies output are obtained by this simple digital-tuning scheme with one resonator. For a disk resonator of 32 μm in radius with 12 electrodes, resonance frequencies of 71-171 MHz are obtained by changing the electrode connections. An 12th WGM's has been achieved in the paper with a frequency of 313 MHz. Radial-contour-mode micromechanical disk resonator with high frequency and high quality factor ( Q) is attractive for wireless communication application. The nonlinear behaviors are usually not expected for disk resonator with high stiffness. However, when disk resonator is actuated by large bias voltage or works in vacuum, spring softening effect was observed. And spring hardening effect occurs when the resonator works in low temperature (below 110 K). In this work, the nonlinear behaviors of disk resonator are investigated. This paper investigates the stability in distribution of stochastic delay recurrent neural networks with Markovian switching. Using Lyapunov function and stochastic analysis techniques, sufficient conditions on the stability in distribution are given. For such recurrent neural networks, it reveals that the limit distribution of transition probability for segment process associated with solution process is indeed a unique ergodic invariant probability measure. Dihydroartemisinin (DHA), a potent antimalarial drug, also exhibits distinct property in modulation on Treg and B cells, which has been recognized for decades, but the underlying mechanisms remain understood. Herein we revealed that DHA could promote Treg proliferation, meanwhile, suppress B cell expansion in germinal centers, and consequently decrease the number of circulating plasma cells and the content of serum immunoglobulins. Further, DHA-activated Treg significantly mitigated lipopolysaccharide-induced and malaria-associated inflammation. All these scenarios were attributed to the upregulation of c-Fos expression by DHA and enhancement of its interaction with target genes in both Treg and circulating plasma cells with bilateral cell fates. In Treg, the c-Fos-DHA complex upregulated cell proliferation-associated genes and promoted cell expansion; whereas in plasma cells, it upregulated the apoptosis-related genes resulting in decreased circulating plasma cells. Thus, the bilateral immunoregulatory mechanism of DHA was elucidated and its application in the treatment of autoimmune diseases is further justified. Introduction: Surgical treatment for hepatic cystic ehinococcosis (CE) is not standardized in Kashi Prefecture. Previous evidence identified effectiveness of a clinical pathway in the field of liver surgery. However, proof of a clinical pathway program, especially for CE patients, is lacking. This study aimed to assess the validity of a clinical pathway for hepatic CE surgery performed on patients from Kashi Prefecture. Methods: A clinical pathway was developed and implemented by a multidisciplinary team for patients undergoing hepatic CE surgery. Two groups were formed from patients undergoing hepatic CE surgery during a defined period before and after implementing a clinical pathway. Additionally, a propensity score matching analysis was performed. Results: In the overall analysis (n = 258) as well as the matched analysis (n = 166), after implementing the clinical pathway, hospital stay was significantly reduced from 13 to 10 days and from 14 to 10 days, respectively (P < 0.05). Postoperative morbidity did not increase. Cost analysis showed a significant decrease in median costs of medication and nursing in favor of the clinical pathway (medication: 5400 CNY vs. 6400 CNY, P = 0.038; nursing: 3200 CNY vs. 4100 CNY, P = 0.02). Conclusion: Implementing the clinical pathway for hepatic CE surgery is feasible and safe. The clinical pathway achieved significant reduction of hospital stay without compromising postoperative morbidity. Costs of medication and nursing are significantly reduced. This study investigated the ultrafiltration (UF) membrane fouling mechanism of intracellular organic matter (IOM) from Chlorella vulgaris (CV) and Microcystis aeruginosa (MA). Both CV- and MA-IOM caused severe membrane fouling during UF; however, there were significant differences in the membrane fouling by these two materials. Neutral hydrophilic (N-HPI) compounds were the organics that caused the most severe membrane fouling during CV-IOM filtration, whereas the MA-IOM membrane fouling was induced by mainly hydrophobic (HPO) organics. From an analysis based on Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek theory, it was found that the interaction energy between the membrane and foulants in the later stage of filtration was the major factor determining the efficiency of filtration for both CV-IOM and MA-IOM. The TPI organics in CV-IOM fouled the membrane to a more severe degree during the initial filtration flux; however, when the membrane surface was covered with CV-IOM foulants, the N-HPI fraction of CV-IOM caused the most severe membrane fouling because its attractive energy with the membrane was the highest. For MA-IOM, regardless of the initial filtration flux or the late stage of filtration, the HPO organics fouled the membrane to the greatest extent. An analysis of modified filtration models revealed that cake layer formation played a more important role than other fouling mechanisms during the filtration of CV-IOM and MA-IOM. This study provides a significant understanding of the membrane fouling mechanism of IOM and is beneficial for developing some strategies for membrane fouling control when treating MA and CV algae-laden waters. Organic acid production including lactate and acetate is an economically attractive technology that has gained momentum worldwide over the past years. These series of action need to be performed by an esoteric and complex microbial community, in which different members have distinct roles in the establishment of a collective organization. In this study, we analyzed the bioma from bioreactors with various pH conditions of 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0 (R1, R2 and R3), respectively, involved in acidogenic digestion for stable production of various organic acids by means of high-throughput Illumina sequencing, disclosing thousands of genes and extracting more than 53 microbial genomes. At pH 5.0, the hydrolysis reaction was enhanced and thus the lactic acid fermentation was stably improved to 45.96 mm/L and acetic acid to 73.77 mm/L. R2 was found with the most suitable pH condition for stable organic acids production as Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria were the major members. Throughout this article, the conundrum on finite-time cluster synchronization is investigated for time-varying delayed complex dynamical networks using a kind of new hybrid control scheme. In the light of Lyapunov stability theorem and finite-time control theory, the finite-time cluster synchronization criteria can be achieved. Besides, we introduce the distinction between cluster synchronization and complete synchronization, which is how to select the controlling nodes. We discuss the differences among cluster synchronization with time-varying delays, complete synchronization with time-varying delays, cluster synchronization with a single delay, and cluster synchronization without delay, which is on constructing Lyapunov functional and designing the finite-time hybrid controllers. This paper aims at establishing the predictive capability of the discrete element method (DEM) by validating the simulated responses of granular systems against experimental observations at both the macroscale and the microscale. A previously published biaxial shearing test on a 2D assembly of randomly packed elliptical rods was chosen as the benchmark test. In carrying out the corresponding DEM simulations herein, the contact model was derived and then validated using finite element analysis; the associated parameters were calibrated experimentally. The flexible (membrane) boundary was modeled by a bonded-particle string with experimentally calibrated parameters. An iteration procedure was implemented to replicate the initial packing and also to satisfy the boundary conditions in the experiment. Overall, the DEM simulation is found effective in reproducing the stress-strain-volumetric response, the statistical observation on the fabric anisotropy and the strain localization. Furthermore, the closer the numerical packing is to the experimental one, the closer the response is reproduced, demonstrating the significance of the initial packing reconstruction. Still, there are some minor differences between the experiment and simulation, reflecting the limitations associated with the particle number and the measurement resolution used in the experiment when reproducing the initial packing. Background: The study aims to assess the residual alveolar bone volume in Chinese chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and methods: Two hundred and eight HD patients and healthy controls were enrolled to undergo CBCT examination. To evaluate residual alveolar bone volume, bone height was measured from the alveolar crest (AC) to the maxillary sinus floor or the mandibular nerve canal, whereas bone width was measured at a depth of 1.0, 3.0, and 6.0 mm apical to the AC. Results: There was no significant difference in demographics and the extent of tooth loss between HD patients and control group. Both groups showed abundant residual bone volume. However, the heights of residual alveolar bone at the upper premolars and first molar in HD patients were significantly lower than those of the control group ( p < 0.05). No significant difference was observed for alveolar bone at the lower premolars and molars. The bone width showed statistical differences for HD patients' upper second molars, lower first premolars, and second molars ( p < 0.05). Conclusions: While the residual bone was sufficient for implant placement, HD patients exhibited with significantly lower residual bone height at the sites of the upper premolars and first molar and varied residual bone width depending on the location. Clinical relevance: Owing to these changes, special cautions need to be taken for patients undergoing HD or with chronically impaired renal functions during implant treatment planning. In a study of 315 HBV specimens obtained from southern China, 240 (76.9%) were assigned to genotype B, 72 (22.9%) were genotype C, two (0.6%) were genotype A and one (0.3%) was genotype D. Statistical analysis revealed that variables such as age, gender, HBV vaccination rate, hepatitis anamnesis rate, anti-HBs and HBeAg prevalence and virus load were insignificant between genotype B ( n = 240) and genotype C cases ( n = 72) ( P > 0.05). However, the frequency of amino acid (aa) substitutions in the major hydrophilic region (MHR; aa 99-169) and the putative HLA class I-restricted cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) epitope region of the S gene, as well as the overlapping polymerase/RT region (aa 32-212), were significantly higher in genotype C group than genotype B ( P < 0.001). Anti-HEV IgM is a diagnostic for recent or ongoing HEV infection. However, some patients with acute hepatitis E (AHE) negative for anti-HEV IgM in acute period were often observed in clinical practice. In this study, we constructed the anti-HEV IgA indirect ELISA assay to evaluate the significance of anti-HEV IgA. The specificity of anti-HEV IgA was 99.6%. Among 245 AHE patients, 84 samples from 84 patients were positive for HEV RNA. The positive rate of anti-HEV IgA, anti-HEV IgM and anti-HEV IgG in 84 samples positive for HEV RNA was 96.3, 97.6, and 88.1%, respectively, and no sample was negative for anti-HEV IgA and anti-HEV IgM simultaneously. Among 245 AHE patients, we found nine samples collected from nine patients in acute period were negative for anti-HEV IgM but positive for anti-HEV IgA and two samples were positive for HEV RNA. Axon extension during development of the nervous system is guided by many factors, but the signalling mechanisms responsible for triggering this extension remain mostly unknown. Here we have examined the role of Rho family small guanosine triphosphatases (GTPases) in mediating axon guidance by diffusible factors. Expression of either dominant-negative or constitutively active Cdc42 in cultured Xenopus laevis spinal neurons, at a concentration that does not substantially affect filopodial formation and neurite extension, abolishes the chemoattractive growth cone turning induced by a gradient of brain-derived neurotrophic factor that can activate Cdc42 and Rac in cultured neurons. Chemorepulsion induced by a gradient of lysophosphatidic acid is also abolished by the expression of dominant-negative RhoA. We also show that an asymmetry in Rho kinase or filopodial initiation across the growth cone is sufficient to trigger the turning response and that there is a crosstalk between the Cdc42 and RhoA pathways through their converging actions on the myosin activity essential for growth cone chemorepulsion. The influenza epidemic is a huge burden to public health. Current influenza vaccines provide limited protection against new variants due to frequent mutation of the virus. The continual emergence of novel variants necessitates the method rapidly monitoring influenza virus infection in experimental systems. Although several replication-competent reporter viruses carrying fluorescent proteins or small luciferase have been generated in previous studies, visualizing influenza virus infection via such strategy requires reverse genetic modification for each viral strain which is usually time-consuming and inconvenient. Here, we created a novel influenza A nucleoprotein (NP) dependent reporter gene transcription activation module using NP-specific nanobodies. Our results demonstrated the modular design allowed reporter genes (mNeonGreen fluorescent protein and Gaussia luciferase) specifically expressing to detect intracellular NP protein, and therefore acts as a universal biosensor to monitor infection of various influenza A subtypes in living cells. The new system may provide a powerful tool to analyze influenza A infections at the cellular level to facilitate new antiviral drug discovery. Tissue engineering is a promising technology used as an alternative to organ/tissue transplantation which is often limited by donor shortage. The construction of large-sized engineered tissue requires a fast and sufficient vascularization process. Previous studies have shown that hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) -1α may promote the vascularization process implying that stabilized HIF-1α can be applied in the engineering of large-sized tissue. However, the toxicity and off-target effect of previously reported HIF-1α stabilizers limit their clinical application. FG-4592, a small molecule specific HIF stabilizer, was previously investigated as an anti-anemia drug in a phase-III clinical trial. Here we found that FG-4592 promoted tube formation in an in vitro model of angiogenesis by stabilizing HIF-1α and activating vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). When FG-4592 immobilized fibrin gel scaffold was implanted into a subcutaneous tissue engineering chamber, the vascularization process was significantly enhanced through the similar mechanisms which was verified in vitro. We conclude that FG-4592 may serve as a pro-angiogenic molecule for the construction of large-sized engineered tissue where intensive angiogenesis is required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is a principal determinant of arterial blood pressure and fluid and electrolyte balance. RAS component dysregulation was recently found in some malignancies and correlated with poor patient outcomes. However, the exact mechanism of local RAS activation in tumors is still unclear. Here, we find that the local angiotensin II predominantly exists in the hypoxic regions of tumor formed by nasopharyngeal carcinoma CNE2 cells and breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells, where these tumor cells autocrinely produce angiotensin II by a chymase-dependent rather than an angiotensin converting enzyme-dependent mechanism. We further demonstrate in nasopharyngeal carcinoma CNE2 and 5-8F cells that this chymase-dependent effect is mediated by increased levels of lactate, a by-product of glycolytic metabolism. Finally, we show that the enhanced angiotensin II plays an important role in the intracellular accumulation of HIF-1α of hypoxic nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells and mediates the radiation-resistant phenotype of these nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells. Thus, our findings reveal the critical role of hypoxia in producing local angiotensin II by a lactate-chymase-dependent mechanism and highlight the importance of local angiotensin II in regulating radioresistance of hypoxic tumor cells. Hepatitis D virus (HDV) is a defective RNA virus that requires the presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) for its life cycle. The in vitro HDV infection system is widely used as a surrogate model to study cellular infection with both viruses owing to its practical feasibility. However, previous methods for running this system were less efficient for high-throughput screening and large-scale studies. Here, we developed a novel method for the production of infectious HDV by adenoviral vector (AdV)-mediated transduction. We demonstrated that the AdV-based method yields 10-fold higher viral titers than the transient-transfection approach. The HDV-containing supernatant derived from AdV-infected Huh7 cells can be used as the inoculum in infectivity assays without requiring further concentration prior to use. Furthermore, we devloped a chemiluminescent immunoassay (HDV-CLEIA) to quantitatively determine intracellular HDAg with a dynamic range of 5-11,000 pg/mL. HDV-CLEIA can be used as an alternative approach to assess HDV infection. The advantages of our updated methodology were demonstrated through in vitro HDV infection of HepaRG cells and by evaluating the neutralization activity using antibodies that target various regions of the HBV/HDV envelope proteins. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a worldwide health problem. Serum levels of FGF23, a phosphaturic hormone, increase at the earliest stages of CKD, and have been found to be independently associated with the mortality and morbidity of CKD patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether FGF23 neutralization was able to improve bone quality and osseointegration of titanium implants. Uremia was induced by 5/6 nephrectomy in adult female mice. Postsurgery, the mice were injected with vehicle or FGF23 neutralizing antibody (5 mg/kg body weight) 3 times a week. Experimental titanium implants were inserted in the distal end of the femurs. FGF23 neutralization significantly increased serum phosphate, 1,25(OH)2D and BUN, and decreased serum PTH and FGF23, relative to vehicle-treated CKD mice. Histomorphometric analysis of the tibiae indicated that FGF23 neutralization normalized the osteoidosis observed in vehicle-treated CKD mice. Although bone-implant contact ratio remained unchanged by anti-FGF23 antibody treatment, the strength of osseointegration, as evidenced by a biomechanical push-in test, was significantly improved by FGF23 neutralization. Our findings revealed that FGF23 neutralization effectively improves bone quality and osseointegration of titanium implants in CKD mice, suggesting FGF23 as a key factor of CKD related bone diseases.
