Abstract Background Microbial communities are crucial for ecosystems. A central goal of microbial ecological research is to simplify the biodiversity in natural environments and quantify the functional roles to explore how the ecosystems respond under different environmental conditions. However, the research on the stability and dynamics of lake microbes in response to repeated warming stress is limited. Methods To exclude confounding environmental factors, we conducted a 20-day repeated warming simulation experiment to examine the composition and function dynamics of lake microbial communities. Results Experimental warming significantly altered the community structure of bacteria instead of fungi. Microbial communities are known to play an important role in maintaining ecological balance and can be used as an indicator for assessing environmental pollution. Numerous studies have revealed that air pollution can alter the structure of microbial communities, which may increase health risks. Nevertheless, the relationships between microbial communities and particulate matter (PM) caused by air pollution in terms of health risk assessment are not well understood. This study aimed to validate the influences of PM chemical compositions on microbial communities and assess the associated health risks. Our results, based on similarity analysis, revealed that the stability structure of the microbial communities had a similarity greater than 73%. In addition, the altered richness and diversity of microbial communities were significantly associated with PM chemical compositions. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exerted a positive influence on microbial communities in different environmental variables. Additionally, a stronger linear correlation was observed between hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and the richness of microbial communities. All estimated health risks from PM chemical compositions, calculated under different environmental variables, significantly exceeded the acceptable level by a factor of more than 49. Cr and 1,2-Dibromoethane displayed dual adverse effects of non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks. Overall, the study provides insights into the fundamental mechanisms of the variability in microbial communities driven by PM, which may support the crucial role of PM chemical compositions in the risk of microorganisms in the atmospheric environment.

Flemingia philippinensis, a polyphenol-rich plant, holds potential for improving inflammation, but its mechanisms are not well understood. Therefore, this study employed network pharmacology and molecular docking to explore the mechanism by which Flemingia philippinensis ameliorates inflammation. In this study, 29 kinds of active ingredients were obtained via data mining. Five main active components were screened out for improving inflammation, which were flemichin D, naringenin, chrysophanol, genistein and orobol. In total, 52 core targets were identified, including AKT serine/threonine kinase 1 (AKT1), tumor necrosis factor (TNF), B-cell lymphoma-2 (BCL2), serum albumin (ALB), and estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1). Gene ontology (GO) enrichment analysis identified 2331 entries related to biological processes, 98 entries associated with cellular components, and 203 entries linked to molecular functions. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis yielded 149 pathways, including those involved in EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor resistance, endocrine resistance, and the PI3K–Akt signaling pathway. Molecular docking results showed strong binding effects between the main active components and the core targets, with binding energies less than −5 kcal/mol. In summary, this study preliminarily elucidated the underlying mechanisms by which Flemingia philippinensis, through a multi-component, multi-target, and multi-pathway approach, ameliorates inflammation. This provides a theoretical foundation for the subsequent application of Flemingia philippinensis in inflammation amelioration.

Gallic acid (GA) is a type of polyphenolic compound that can be found in a range of fruits, vegetables, and tea. Although it has been confirmed it improves non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), it is still unknown whether GA can improve the occurrence of NAFLD by increasing the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) accumulation and alleviating cholesterol metabolism disorders. Therefore, the present study explored the effect of GA on LDLR and its mechanism of action. The findings indicated that the increase in LDLR accumulation in HepG2 cells induced by GA was associated with the stimulation of the epidermal growth factor receptor–extracellular regulated protein kinase (EGFR-ERK1/2) signaling pathway. When the pathway was inhibited by EGFR mab cetuximab, it was observed that the activation of the EGFR-ERK1/2 signaling pathway induced by GA was also blocked. At the same time, the accumulation of LDLR protein and the uptake of LDL were also suppressed. Additionally, GA can also promote the accumulation of forkhead box O3 (FOXO3) and suppress the accumulation of hepatocyte nuclear factor-1α (HNF1α), leading to the inhibition of proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 (PCSK9) mRNA expression and protein accumulation. This ultimately results in increased LDLR protein accumulation and enhanced uptake of LDL in cells. In summary, the present study revealed the potential mechanism of GA’s role in ameliorating NAFLD, with a view of providing a theoretical basis for the dietary supplementation of GA.

Compared to single microbial strains, complex interactions between microbial consortia composed of various microorganisms have been shown to be effective in expanding ecological functions and accomplishing biological processes. Electroactive microorganisms (EMs) and degradable microorganisms (DMs) play vital roles in bioenergy production and the degradation of organic pollutants hazardous to human health. These microorganisms can strongly interact with other microorganisms and promote metabolic cooperation, thus facilitating electricity production and pollutant degradation. In this review, we describe several specific types of EMs and DMs based on their ability to adapt to different environments, and summarize the mechanism of EMs in extracellular electron transfer. The effects of interactions between EMs and DMs are evaluated in terms of electricity production and degradation efficiency. The principle of the enhancement in microbial consortia is also introduced, such as improved biomass, changed degradation pathways, and biocatalytic potentials, which are directly or indirectly conducive to human health.

Highlights • Nanoparticle-decorated biochar as remediation materials fosters the attainment of soil remediation and sustainable agriculture. • The synthesis, characterization, soil remediation, and environmental effects of nanoparticle-decorated biochar are described. • A design and selection framework of nanoparticle-decorated biochar is proposed to evaluate the safety in all directions.

Abstract The development of economical, efficient, and robust electrocatalysts toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is highly imperative for the rapid advancement of renewable H2 energy‐associated technologies. Extensive utilization of the heterointerface effect can endow the catalysts with remarkably boosted electrocatalytic performance due to the modified electronic state of active sites. Herein, we demonstrate deliberate crafting of CoP/CoO heterojunction porous nanotubes (abbreviated as CoP/CoO PNTs hereafter) using a self‐sacrificial template‐engaged strategy. Precise control over the Kirkendall diffusion process of the presynthesized cobalt–aspartic acid complex nanowires is indispensable for the formation of CoP/CoO heterostructures. The topochemical transformation strategy of the reactive templates enables uniform and maximized construction of CoP/CoO heterojunctions throughout all the porous nanotubes. The establishment of CoP/CoO heterojunctions could considerably modify the electronic configuration of the active sites and also improve the electric conductivity, which endows the resultant CoP/CoO PNTs with enhanced intrinsic activity. Simultaneously, the hollow and porous nanotube architectures allow sufficient accessibility of exterior/interior surfaces and molecular permeability, drastically promoting the reaction kinetics. Consequently, when used as HER electrocatalysts, the well‐designed CoP/CoO PNTs show Pt‐like activity, with an overpotential of only 61 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and excellent stability in 1.0 M KOH medium, exceeding those of the vast majority of the previously reported nonprecious candidates. Density functional theory calculations further substantiate that the construction of CoP/CoO heterojunctions enables optimization of the Gibbs free energies for water adsorption and H adsorption, resulting in boosted HER intrinsic activity. The present study may provide in‐depth insights into the fundamental mechanisms of heterojunction‐induced electronic regulation, which may pave the way for the rational design of advanced Earth‐abundant electrocatalysts in the future.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have gained remarkable attention as a novel wastewater treatment that simultaneously generates electricity. The low activity of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remains one of the most critical bottlenecks limiting the development of MFCs. To date, although research on biochar as an electrocatalyst in MFCs has made tremendous progress, further improvements are needed to make it economically practical. Recently, biochars have been considered to be ORR electrocatalysts with developmental potential. In this review, the ORR mechanism and the essential requirements of ORR catalysts in MFC applications are introduced. Moreover, the focus is to highlight the material selection, properties, and preparation of biochar electrocatalysts, as well as the evaluation and measurement of biochar electrodes. Additionally, in order to provide comprehensive information on the specific applications of biochars in the field of MFCs, their applications as electrocatalysts, are then discussed in detail, including the uses of nitrogen-doped biochar and other heteroatom-doped biochars as electrocatalysts, poisoning tests for biochar catalysts, and the cost estimation of biochar catalysts. Finally, profound insights into the current challenges and clear directions for future perspectives and research are concluded.

Phenanthrene (PHE), mainly released from coal tar and petroleum distillation, is an important kind of prevalent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contamination in China (up to 2.38 ± 0.02 mg/kg in soil and 8668 ng/L in surface water) and other countries in the world. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) show promising application prospects in the decontamination field, however, suffering from the intrinsic fragility and fine powder forms. Therefore, macroscopic MOFs architecture-sandwich-like Fe-ZIF-8/blue TiO2 nanotube arrays (BTNAs)/Ti substrate (FBTT) anode with strong interfacial bonding (Fe-O-Ti and Fe-2-MIM-Ti coordination) was constructed using innovative in situ growth, condensation-crystallization-deposition, and pyrolysis methods, aiming at exploring the feasibility of MOFs-based anode/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) mediated PHE elimination, revealing the in-depth mechanisms, simultaneously overcoming the intrinsic drawbacks of MOFs. The FBTT-4 (doping content of 30 %) efficiently degraded PHE by 90.01 % and 74.5 % within 10 min at 350 μg/L and 3 mg/L, respectively, mediated by the ·OH compared to the SO4·-, 1O2, and O2·-. Post-optimized range of anodic potential enabled (i) anodic oxidation, (ii) activation of water and PMS molecules to produce active species, (iii) capture of electrons in reactants to reduce Fe3+/Ti4+ to Fe2+/Ti3+, maintaining the proportion of Fe/Ti with low valence and thus stable PMS activation capacity, and (iv) regulation of the Fe/Ti d-band center to modulate the anode adsorption capacity. The further increment in anodic potential could promote “dark photocatalysis” with a Z-scheme-like mechanism. Thus, it is proposed that the development of macroscopic MOFs-based anode, especially those with small band gaps, represents vast potentials in electrocatalytic contamination elimination. Simultaneously, the MOFs-based anode is expected to fully exploit their catalytic capacities and solve their intrinsic defects as well.

Populations and metropolitan centers are accumulated in coastal areas around the world. In view of the fact that they are geographically adjacent to coasts and intense anthropogenic activities, increasing global offshore pollution has been an important worldwide concern over the past several decades and has become a very serious problem that needs to be addressed urgently. Due to offshore pollution, various geological disasters occur in high frequency, including intensified erosion and salinization of coastal soils, frequent geological collapses and landslides and increasing seismic activities. Moreover, offshore pollution shows increasingly serious impacts on the topography and geomorphology of offshore and coastal areas, including coastal degradation, retreating coastlines and estuary delta erosion. Offshore sedimentation processes are strongly influenced by the pH changes of terrestrial discharges, and sedimentary dynamics have become extremely acute and complex due to offshore pollution. The seabed topography and hydrodynamic environment determine the fate and transport of pollutants entering offshore regions. Coastal estuaries, port basins and lagoons that have relatively moderate ocean currents and winds are more likely to accumulate pollutants. Offshore regions and undersea canyons can be used as conduits for transporting pollutants from the continent to the seabed. It is particularly noteworthy that the spatial/temporal distribution of species, community structures, and ecological functions in offshore areas have undergone unprecedented changes in recent decades. Due to increasing offshore pollution, the stable succession and development trend of marine ecosystems has been broken. It is thus important to identify and regulate the quantity, composition and transportation of pollutants in offshore regions and their behavior in marine ecosystems. In particular, crucial actions for stabilizing marine ecosystems, including increasing species and biodiversity, should be implemented to enhance their anti-interference capabilities. This review provides an overview of the current situation of offshore pollution, as well as major trends of pollutant fate and transportation from continent to marine ecosystems, transformation of pollutants in sediments, and their bioaccumulation and diffusion. This study retrospectively reviews the long-term geological evolution of offshore pollution from the perspective of marine geology, and analyses their long-term potential impacts on marine ecosystems. Due to ecological risks associated with pollutants released from offshore sediments, more research on the influence of global offshore pollution based on marine geology is undoubtedly needed.

Endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a harmful substance commonly found in various environments that causes lung fibrosis. Exposure to PM2.5 also increases the risk of respiratory diseases. Through sulfur-carbon bonds and the edge S effect, GOQDs were used to bind in single-layer molybdenum disulfide (SLMoS2) nanosheets to synthesize SLMoS2@GOQDs heterojunction structures. GOQDs doping greatly increased the water solubility and stabilized of SLMoS2. SLMoS2@GOQDs with catalase-like activity protected cells from ultrastructural and cytomembrane damage and apoptosis induced by LPS. Moreover, the doping of GOQDs enhanced the escape of SLMoS2@GOQDs from cellular uptake and suppressed the release of Mo ions. Nanosheet-cell interface interactions that were regulated by quantum dots supported these positive effects. Immunofluorescence analysis and cell imaging confirmed that the nanomaterial protected against cell injury by regulating the canonical Wnt/β-catenin pathway and the secretion of relevant cytokines, such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). Moreover, SLMoS2@GOQDs also mitigated pneumonia caused by PM2.5 in vivo. Collectively, our findings not only provide a simple and effective approach to control lung diseases (caused by LPS or PM2.5), but also reveal the potential value of heterojunction materials in the fields of toxicology and human health, boosting the application of nanotechnology in the fields of ecotoxicology and environmental safety.

The safety of microplastics (MPs) and associated health effects has been one of the major concerns worldwide. However, the role of photoaging toward the risk of MPs in water ecosystems remains inconclusive yet. In this study, the size of polyamide (PA, ∼32.50 μm) MPs was obviously decreased after photoaging in water containing fulvic acid (FA) and humic acid (HA) (∼19.75 and ∼24.30 μm, respectively). Nanoplastics were formed (4.65% and 2.03%, respectively) and hydrophilia and colloidal stability was improved due to the formation of oxygen-containing functional groups. FA-aged PA exhibited higher inhibition on body length and weight of developing zebrafish than HA-aged and pristine PA. Photoaged MPs in intestine were more difficult to be depurated by zebrafish, leading to the disappearance of intestinal folding, shedding of more enterocytes, and emaciation of intestinal microvilli. Dietary lipid digestion in larvae was inhibited by aged PA due to oxidative stress-triggered lipid peroxidation and inhibition of lipase activities and bile acids secretion. Exposure of photoaged MPs down-regulated genes (cd36, dgat1a, dgat2, mttp, etc.) associated with triglyceride resynthesis and transportation, resulting in lipid maladsorption and growth inhibition. Our findings highlight the potential negative effects of environmentally aged MPs on diet digestion and nutrient assimilation in fish.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as the main components of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs), are carcinogenic organic pollutants that occur widely in the atmospheric environment with increasing concentration. Moreover, PAHs are widespread all over the world due to their high volatility and long-range transport potential. The monitoring of atmospheric PAHs is often limited by working conditions, especially around oil field operation areas and other industrial areas. Mosses (Bryophyta), the most sensitive atmosphere pollution indicators, can be easily collected and have been used to monitor atmospheric pollutants including PAHs. Thus, characteristics and influencing factors of mosses’ absorption and accumulation of PAHs in the atmosphere were discussed, and the application of mosses in the biomonitoring of atmospheric PAHs were summarized. Biomonitoring mosses include Dicranum scoparium, Hypnum cupressiforme, Thamnobryum alopecurum, Thuidium tamariscinum, Hylocomium splendens, Pleurozium scheberi, etc. Currently, the main methods for monitoring PAHs by mosses are biomonitoring with the chemical analysis method, the index of atmospheric purity (IAP) method, the ecological survey method, and the Moss-bag technique. Biomonitoring of atmospheric PAHs using mosses has a relatively wide range of prospects.

The CdSe nanorod as a one-dimensional nanostructure has an excellent performance in many fields, such as healthcare, new energy, and environmental protection. Thus, it is crucial to investigate its potential adverse health effects prior to their wide exposure. The lung tissue would be the main target organ after CdSe nanorods enter living systems. Here, we showed that pulmonary instillation of CdSe nanorods could decrease the vitality of T-SOD and T-AOC in lung tissues of a rat, increase MDA and hydroxyproline levels and lipid peroxidation products, induce mitochondrial cristae breakage and vacuolization, cause inflammatory responses, and finally induce pulmonary fibrosis. The oral administration of modified procyanidinere could significantly increase the content of antioxidant enzymes, scavenge free radicals, reduce lipid peroxidation, and have protective effects on CdSe nanorods-induced pulmonary fibrosis. The benefit is not only in the early inflammatory stage but also in the later stages of the CdSe nanorods-induced pulmonary fibrosis.

The Development of transformative technology capable of producing inexpensive superior lithium electroactive anode material with low volume changes and stable performance on cycling is an important step on the path to advanced application of lithium ion batteries (LIBs). In this work, a new synthesis strategy for hybrid SnO2-Co3O4 nanotubes, based on electrospun polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) fibers with co-embedded metal precursors is explored. This low cost, template-free, Kirkendall effect-derived process first yields phase-separated core-sheath PVP/SnO2-Co3O4 composites, creating highly uniform and well-dispersed nanotubes via self-assembly accompanying gradual PVP combustion. Control experiments show that the heat-treatment atmosphere is the key for the in situ growing in a large yield. On account of the great buffering capability in hierarchical porous architecture, synergistic effect of active multi-components and the present interfacial Co nanophase, the proposed tubular hybrids possess enhanced cyclic stability and lithium storage capacity as anodes with retained capacity as high as 873 mAh g−1 even after 200 cycles at 100 mA g−1. The protocol paves the way for rational design of hollow hybrid nanotubes with wide applications.

Nanocolloids (Ncs) are highly dispersed mixtures of nanoscale (1–100 nm) heterogeneous systems, which are ubiquitous in aquatic environments. Ncs are considered a vital pollutant carrier due to their special surface properties and unique hydrodynamic characteristics. They play an essential role in the process of promoting pollutant migration and transformation. In recent years, with the increase in chemicals in the environment and the complexity of environmental pollution, the health threats of Ncs in ecological systems are arousing great concerning. Therefore, recent work to characterize the ecotoxicity of Ncs has focused on the potential environmental health implications, including exploration of toxicity to aquatic organisms from a wide range of the ecosystem food webs. Herein, we summarize the formation, distribution, and characterization of natural Ncs in the marine environments. Moreover, we highlight the adverse impacts of Ncs on representatives of various trophic levels aquatic organisms (e.g., algae, bacteria, invertebrates, and fish). The mechanisms of Ncs ecotoxicity at the cellular level are reviewed, and the remaining unclear points on toxic tools such as oxidative damage and metabolic disorder are presented. We also discuss the research challenges and future developments within the field of ecotoxicity. This study will bridge our knowledge gap on the ecotoxicity of Ncs.

The rational design of cost-effective and highly efficient catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is vastly desirable for advanced renewable energy conversion and storage systems. Tailoring the composition and architecture of electrocatalysts is a reliable approach for improving their catalytic performance. Herein, we developed hierarchical ultra-thin Co nanosheets coupled with N-doped carbon plate (Co-NS@NCP) as an efficient OER catalyst through a feasible and easily scalable NaCl template method. The rapid dissolution-recrystallization-carbonization synthesis process allows Co nanosheets to self-assemble into plenty of secondary building units and to distribute uniformly on N-doped carbon plate. Benefitting from the vertically aligned Co nanosheet arrays and hierarchical architecture, the obtained Co-NS@NCP possess an extremely high specific surface area up to 446.49 m2 g−1, which provides sufficient exposed active sites, excellent structure stability, and multidimensional mass transfer channels. Thus, the Co-NS@NCP affords remarkable electrocatalytic performance for OER in an alkaline medium with a low overpotential of only 278 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope, as well as robust electrocatalytic stability for long-term electrolysis operation. The present findings here emphasize a rational and promising perspective for designing high-efficiency non-precious electrocatalysts for the OER process and sustainable energy storage and conversion system.

Combined toxicity is a critical issue in risk assessment of contaminants. However, very little is known about the joint effects of graphene oxide (GO, a crucial 2-dimensional carbon material) and hexavalent chromium (Cr6+, a widespread heavy metal), particularly with respect to the critical period of embryogenesis. In this study, the combined toxicity of GO and Cr6+ was evaluated through embryo-larval toxicity test in Danio rerio (zebrafish). Results indicated that the co-exposure of Cr6+ (1 mg/L) and GO (0.01 mg/L) inhibited hatching and spontaneous movement of embryos, but no significant changes were found in the single Cr6+ or GO group. Compared with the single GO or Cr6+ exposure, their co-exposure (GO+Cr6+) significantly enhanced the teratogenicity in a concentration-dependent pattern, and the spinal curvature was observed as the main deformity. GO+Cr6+ changed the protein secondary structures of embryos result of the generation of ROS and oxidative stress. The degradations of vertical myosepta and cartilages were observed in co-exposure group, suggesting that GO+Cr6+ disrupted the development of musculoskeletal system. The genes col11a1a, col2a1a and postnb were down-regulated but the genes acta1b and mmp9 were up-regulated by GO+Cr6+. The interactions between Cr6+ and GO demonstrated that the morphology, structure, and surface properties of GO were modified by Cr6+. The enhanced defects and O-containing groups of GO could trap more β-sheets, induced oxidative stress, disturbed the development of skeletal muscles and cartilages in zebrafish. These data suggested that GO+Cr6+ enhanced their joint toxicity due to the variation of nanoparticle properties. This finding is important for assessing the ecological risk of graphene family nanomaterials in the natural environment.

In the process of remediation of contaminated soil, we should give full play to the role of low-energy plants and fully display the concept of modern energy-saving and environmental protection. Phytoremediation is an effective method to remediate cadmium-contaminated soil, and root exudates play an important part in this process. Here, the response of snapdragon in a pot-culture experiment under two concentrations of Cd (1.0 and 2.5 mg/kg) was evaluated. Snapdragon is a medicinal plant with low energy consumption, which has low requirements on environmental factors and strong resistance. The results showed that both Cd concentrations interfere with the uptake of B, P, Cu, Mn, Mo, and Zn by the soil. The results also showed that plant type and Cd stress can significantly change the concentrations and species of root exudates. The metabolic changes of root exudates revealed the active defense mechanism of plants to Cd stress: up-regulating of amino acids to sequester/exclude Cd, regulation of citric acid on chelation/complexation, and precipitation of cadmium ions. The application of snapdragon can effectively reduce energy consumption and gradually improve the utilization rate of vegetation, which promotes the degradation of cadmium pollutants in soil.

Graphene family nanomaterials (GFNs), including graphene, graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and graphene quantum dots (GQDs), have manifold potential applications, leading to the possibility of their release into environments and the exposure to humans and other organisms. However, the genotoxicity of GFNs on DNA remains largely unknown. In this review, we highlight the interactions between DNA and GFNs and summarize the mechanisms of genotoxicity induced by GFNs. Generally, the genotoxicity can be sub-classified into direct genotoxicity and indirect genotoxicity. The direct genotoxicity (e.g., direct physical nucleus and DNA damage) and indirect genotoxicity mechanisms (e.g., physical destruction, oxidative stress, epigenetic toxicity, and DNA replication) of GFNs were summarized in the manuscript, respectively. Moreover, the influences factors, such as physicochemical properties, exposure dose, and time, on the genotoxicity of GFNs are also briefly discussed. Given the important role of genotoxicity in GFNs exposure risk assessment, future research should be conducted on the following: (1) developing reliable testing methods; (2) elucidating the response mechanisms associated with genotoxicity in depth; and (3) enriching the evaluation database regarding the type of GFNs, applied dosages, and exposure times.

The thorny issue of membrane biofouling in membrane bioreactors (MBR) calls for new effective control measures. Herein, D-amino acid (DAA) was employed to mediate MBR membrane biofouling by inhibiting biofilm information and disintegrating formed biofilm. Different DAA control ways involving membrane property, DAA-adding timing, and DAA-control mode were explored through experiments and the multiple linear regression model and the response surface methodology. The optimized DAA control ways were acquired, involving DAA used as an active agent, and the DAA-adding timing of 4 h cultured before running, as well as both hydrophilic and hydrophobic membrane, resulting in an approximately 40.24% decrease in the membrane biofouling rate in comparison with the conventional MBR. DAA is an efficient membrane biofouling mediating approach for MBR under optimized control ways combination and a facile solution for solving membrane biofouling in actual membrane systems.

A feasible and green sol-gel method is proposed to fabricate well-distributed nano-particulate Fe-Ni2P incorporated in N, P-codoped porous carbon nanosheets (Fe-Ni2P@N,P-CNSs) using biomass agarose as a carbon source, and ethylenediamine tetra (methylenephosphonic acid) (EDTMPA) as both the N and P source. The doped Fe in Ni2P is essential for a substantial increase in intrinsic catalytic activity, while the combined N,P-containing porous carbon matrix with a better degree of graphitization endows the prepared Fe-Ni2P@N,P-CNSs catalyst with a high specific surface area and improved electrical conductivity. Benefiting from the specific chemical composition and designed active site structure, the as-synthesized Fe-Ni2P@N,P-CNSs manifests a satisfying catalytic performance toward both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an alkaline solution, with low overpotential, small Tafel slope and long-term durability, relative to the counterparts (Fe-free Ni12P5/Ni2P2O7@N,P-CNSs and CNSs) with single components and even comparable to Pt/C and RuO2 catalysts. The present work broadens the exploration of efficient bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts using earth abundant biomass as carbon sources based on non-noble metals for low cost renewable energy conversion/storage.

Chromium (Cr) is one of the most severe heavy metal contaminants in soil, and it seriously threatens ecosystems and human health through the food chain. It is fundamental to collect toxicity data of Cr before developing soil quality criteria/standards in order to efficiently prevent health risks. In this work, the short-term toxic effects of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) on the root growth of eleven terrestrial plants were investigated. The corresponding fifth percentile hazardous concentrations (HC5) by the best fitting species sensitivity distribution (SSD) curves based on the tenth percentile effect concentrations (EC10) were determined to be 0.60 and 4.51 mg/kg for Cr (VI) and Cr (III), respectively. Compared to the screening level values worldwide, the HC5 values in this study were higher for Cr(VI) and lower for Cr(III) to some extent. The results provide useful toxicity data for deriving national or local soil quality criteria for trivalent and hexavalent Cr.

Decorative ornamental plants have been applied as hyperaccumulators/phytoremediators to a wide spectrum of heavy metal contaminants. In this study, pot culture experiments were conducted to investigate the Sn tolerance and accumulation in Impatiens balsamina L., Mirabilis jalapa L. and Tagetes erecta L., in order to assess the possibility of these three ornamental plants to be used as phytoremediators of Sn-contaminated soil. Results show that all three plants exhibited strong tolerance to Sn contamination, and no significant visual toxicity was observed for all three plants grown under most of the Sn treatments. The amount of Sn accumulated in the three plants was positively correlated with the Sn concentration in the soil. The order of the Sn accumulative capacity was Impatiens balsamina > Mirabilis jalapa > Tagetes erecta. Impatiens balsamina and Tagetes erecta showed a low translocation ability (TF) (Impatiens balsamina showed a relatively high bioconcentration factor (BCF, Sn concentration in each part > 100 mg/kg after Sn treatment of 500 mg/kg). Meanwhile, the TF of Mirabilis jalapa was >1, and the fluorescence accumulated the most Sn. In combination with the adaptation to high concentrations of various heavy metals, these three ornamental plants are potential candidates for Sn mining tailings or contaminated soil.

A high-efficiency method to deal with pollutants must be found because environmental problems are becoming more serious. Photocatalytic oxidation technology as the environmentally-friendly treatment method can completely oxidate organic pollutants into pollution-free small-molecule inorganic substances without causing secondary pollution. As a widely used photocatalyst, titanium dioxide (TiO2) can greatly improve the degradation efficiency of pollutants, but several problems are noted in its practical application. TiO2 modified by different materials has received extensive attention in the field of photocatalysis because of its excellent physical and chemical properties compared with pure TiO2. In this review, we discuss the use of different materials for TiO2 modification, highlighting recent developments in the synthesis and application of TiO2 composites using different materials. Materials discussed in the article can be divided into nonmetallic and metallic. Mechanisms of how to improve catalytic performance of TiO2 after modification are discussed, and the future development of modified TiO2 is prospected.

Field pea crops in central Alberta were surveyed for ascochyta blight from 2011 to 2012 and fungal isolates were recovered from foliar lesions on selected plants. Cultural and microscopic characterization of the 275 isolates obtained revealed that 272 were of Mycosphaerella pinodes and three were of Phoma medicaginis var. pinodella. Ascochyta pisi or Phoma koolunga were not identified. Isolates of M. pinodes were divided into two groups, GI and GII, based on visual assessment of culture characteristics. GI isolates (light to dark, mostly gray colony color; pycnidial distribution radial and concentric; conidia 10.5–14.5 × 4.2–6.2 μm most with one septum, occasionally two, constricted at the septum; spore mass light buff to flesh color) were predominant (83%), while GII isolates (dark to gray colony color; pycnidia abundant; conidia 8–16 × 3.5–6.2 μm most with 1 septum, constricted at the septum; spore mass light buff to flesh color) were less common (17%). The cultures of GII isolates were similar to recent descriptions of A. pisi, but they differed in spore color. In a host differential study, 13 pathotypes of M. pinodes were identified from 110 single-spore isolates. Pathotype I was predominant (88 isolates) and virulent on all nine differential genotypes. The other pathotypes (pathotypes II–XIII) were rare (1–6 isolates of each). Comparison of the present results with earlier studies suggests that pathotype I has been prevalent for many years, and that its aggressiveness on the host differentials has increased over time. Emphasis should be placed on breeding for resistance to M. pinodes in field pea cultivars intended for deployment in central Alberta.

BACKGROUND: A large number of studies about effects of air pollutants on cardiovascular mortality have been conducted; however, those investigating association between air pollutants and cardiovascular morbidity are limited, especially in developing countries. METHODS: A time-series analysis on the short-term association between outdoor air pollutants including particulate matter (PM) with diameters of 10 µm or less (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and cardiovascular morbidity was conducted in Tianjin, China based on 4 years of daily data (2008-2011). The morbidity data were stratified by sex and age. The effects of air pollutants during the warm season and the cool season were also analyzed separately. RESULTS: Each increase in PM10, SO2, and NO2 by increments of 10 µg/m3 in a 2-day average concentration was associated with increases in the cardiovascular morbidity of 0.19% with 95 percent confidence interval (95% CI) of 0.08-0.31, 0.43% with 95% CI of 0.03-0.84, and 0.52% with 95% CI of -0.09-1.13, respectively. The effects of air pollutants were more evident in the cool season than those in the warm season, females and the elderly were more vulnerable to outdoor air pollution. CONCLUSIONS: All estimated coefficients of PM10, SO2 and NO2 are positive but only the effect of SO2 implied statistical significance at the 5% level. Moreover, season, sex and age might modify health effects of outdoor air pollutants. This work may bring inspirations for formulating local air pollutant standards and social policy regarding cardiovascular health of residents.

The potential ecological and human health risk related with urban street dust from urban areas of Tianjin, China was quantitatively analyzed using the method of toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) and simple bioaccessibility extraction test (SBET). In the study, Hakason index, Nemerow index (P), the hazard index (HI) and the cancer risk index (RI) were calculated to assess the potential risk. The sequence of potential ecological risk based on Hakason index was arsenic (As) > cadmium (Cd) > lead (Pb) > copper (Cu) > chromium (Cr), in particular, As and Cd were regarded as high polluted metals. While the results of extraction of TCLP were assessed using P, the sequence was As > Pb > Cd > Cr > Cu, which mean that As and Pb should be low polluted, and Cd, Cr and Cu would barely not polluted. For human health, total carcinogenic risk for children and adults was 2.01 × 10(-3) and 1.05 × 10(-3), respectively. This could be considered to be intolerable in urban street dust exposure. The sequence in the hazard quotient (HQ) of each element was As > Cr > Pb > Cu > Cd. The HI value of these toxic metals in urban street dust for children and adults was 5.88 × 10(-1) and 2.80 × 10(-1), respectively. According to the characters of chemistry, mobility, and bioavailability of metals in urban street dust, we estimated the hazards on the environment and human health, which will help us to get more reasonable information for risk management of metals in urban environment.

Aquaporin 3 (AQP3) is an aquaglyceroporin which transports water, glycerol and small solutes across the plasma membrane. Its functions are not limited to fluid transport but also involve the regulation of cell proliferation, migration, skin hydration, wound healing and tumorigenesis. While AQP3 has been reported to play an important role in keratinocyte proliferation, its role in differentiation remains controversial. Our study demonstrated that the expression of AQP3 was regulated during differentiation and that it participated in keratinocyte differentiation control. We further revealed that AQP3 was a transcriptional target of Notch signaling, a critical pathway regulating keratinocyte differentiation and tumor suppression, and it regulated differentiation through a reciprocal negative feedback loop with Notch1. When the expression level of AQP3 was elevated, impaired barrier integrity and increased pro-inflammatory cytokine production ensued, mimicking the pathological conditions in Notch deficient mice and in atopic dermatitis. Dysregulation of AQP3 and Notch receptors has been reported in several skin diseases, including skin cancer. Our discovery of the novel AQP3-Notch1 axis may provide insight into epidermal homeostasis control and possible translational applications, including its potential use as a biomarker for molecular diagnosis in environmental studies.

Blackleg, caused by Leptosphaeria maculans, is an important disease of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) in Canada and throughout the world. Severe epidemics of blackleg can result in significant yield losses. Understanding disease-yield relationships is a prerequisite for measuring the agronomic efficacy and economic benefits of control methods. Field experiments were conducted in 2013, 2014, and 2015 to determine the relationship between blackleg disease severity and yield in a susceptible cultivar and in moderately resistant to resistant canola hybrids. Disease severity was lower, and seed yield was 120%–128% greater, in the moderately resistant to resistant hybrids compared with the susceptible cultivar. Regression analysis showed that pod number and seed yield declined linearly as blackleg severity increased. Seed yield per plant decreased by 1.8 g for each unit increase in disease severity, corresponding to a decline in yield of 17.2% for each unit increase in disease severity. Pyraclostrobin fungicide reduced disease severity in all site-years and increased yield. These results show that the reduction of blackleg in canola crops substantially improves yields.

The electrical conductivity (EC) of soil is generally measured after soil extraction, so this method cannot represent the in situ EC of soil (e.g., EC of soils with different moisture contents) and therefore lacks comparability in some cases. Using a resistance measurement apparatus converted from a configuration of soil microbial fuel cell, the in situ soil EC was evaluated according to the Ohmic resistance (Rs) measured using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The EC of soils with moisture content from 9.1% to 37.5% was calculated according to Rs. A significant positive correlation (R2 = 0.896, p < 0.01) between the soil EC and the moisture content was observed, which demonstrated the feasibility of the approach. This new method can not only represent the actual soil EC, but also does not need any pretreatment. Thus it may be used widely in the measurement of the EC for soils and sediments.

In most countries, sanitary landfill is nowadays the most common way to eliminate municipal solid wastes (MSWs). However, sanitary landfill generates large quantity of heavily polluted leachate, which can induce ecological risk and potential hazards towards public health and ecosystems. The application of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) including ozone-based oxidation, Fenton oxidation, electrochemical oxidation, and other AOPs to treatment of landfill leachate was reviewed. The treatment efficiency in term of chemical oxygen demand (COD) of various AOPs was presented. Advantages and drawbacks of various AOPs were discussed. Among the AOPs reviewed, Fenton process should be the best choice, not only because it can achieve about 49~89% of COD removal with COD ranging from 837 to 8894 mg/L, but also because the process is cost-effective and simple in technological aspect, there is no mass transfer limitation (homogeneous nature) and both iron and hydrogen peroxide are nontoxic.

Rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are regarded as a remarkably promising alternative to current lithium-ion batteries, addressing the requirements for large-scale high-energy storage. Nevertheless, the sluggish kinetics involving oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) hamper the widespread application of ZABs, necessitating the development of high-efficiency and durable bifunctional electrocatalysts. Here, we report oxygen atom-bridged Fe, Co dual-metal dimers (FeOCo-SAD), in which the active site Fe-O-Co-N6 moiety boosts exceptional reversible activity toward ORR and OER in alkaline electrolytes. Specifically, FeOCo-SAD achieves a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.87 V for ORR and an overpotential of 310 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for OER, with a potential gap (ΔE) of only 0.67 V Meanwhile, FeOCo-SAD manifests high performance with a peak power density of 241.24 mW cm-2 in realistic rechargeable ZABs. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the introduction of an oxygen bridge in the Fe, Co dimer induced charge spatial redistribution around Fe and Co atoms. This enhances the activation of oxygen and optimizes the adsorption/desorption dynamics of reaction intermediates. Consequently, energy barriers are effectively reduced, leading to a strong promotion of intrinsic activity toward ORR and OER. This work suggests that oxygen-bridging dual-metal dimers offer promising prospects for significantly enhancing the performance of reversible oxygen electrocatalysis and for creating innovative catalysts that exhibit synergistic effects and electronic states. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an important green oxidant in the field of sewage treatment, and how to improve its activation efficiency and generate free radicals with stronger oxidation performance is a key issue in current research. Herein, we synthesized a Cu-doped α-Fe2O3 catalyst (7% Cu-Fe2O3) for activation of H2O2 under visible light for degradation of organic pollutants. The introduction of a Cu dopant changed the d-band center of Fe closer to the Fermi level, which enhanced the adsorption and activation of the Fe site for H2O2, and the cleavage pathway of H2O2 changed from heterolytic cleavage to homolytic cleavage, thereby improving the selectivity of ⋅OH generation. In addition, Cu doping also promoted the light absorption ability of α-Fe2O3 and the separation of hole-electron pairs, which enhanced its photocatalytic activities. Benefiting from the high selectivity of ⋅OH, 7% Cu-Fe2O3 exhibited efficient degradation activities against ciprofloxacin, the degradation rate was 3.6 times as much as that of α-Fe2O3, and it had good degradation efficiency for a variety of organic pollutants. The performance optimization of isolated atomically dispersed metal active sites is critical but challenging. Here, TiO2@Fe species-N-C catalysts with Fe atomic clusters (ACs) and satellite Fe-N4 active sites were fabricated to initiate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation reaction. The AC-induced charge redistribution of single atoms (SAs) was verified, thus strengthening the interaction between SAs and PMS. In detail, the incorporation of ACs optimized the HSO5 -oxidation and SO5 ·-desorption steps, accelerating the reaction progress. As a result, the Vis/TiFeAS/PMS system rapidly eliminated 90.81% of 45 mg/L tetracycline (TC) in 10 min. The reaction process characterization suggested that PMS as an electron donor would transfer electron to Fe species in TiFeAS, generating 1O2. Subsequently, the hVB + can induce the generation of electron-deficient Fe species, promoting the reaction circulation. This work provides a strategy to construct catalysts with multiple atom assembly-enabled composite active sites for high-efficiency PMS-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). The adsorption characteristics of tetracycline by 2 soils including a clay-rich soil (cinnamon soil) and an iron oxide-rich soil (red soil) were investigated as a function of soil organic matter (SOM). SOM is the main adsorbent for tetracycline in the soil environment. The results indicated that the adsorption kinetics of tetracycline by the different soils with or without organic matter was described by the Elovich equation and the exponent equation. The adsorption of tetracycline on red soil was quite rapid and equilibrium could be reached after 5 h. In contrast, the concentration of tetracycline in cinnamon soil reached equilibrium after 11 h. The difference in equilibrium time in cinnamon soil and red soil was caused by their dominant components for adsorption, including clays, organic matter, and Al/Fe hydrous oxides. It took longer for the penetration of tetracycline into the intedayers between clays and organic matter in cinnamon soil, but tetracycline needed less time for adsorption through surface complexation on oxide surfaces of red soil. Removing SOM from soil markedly shortened the equilibrium time (7h) of adsorption and reduced the equilibrium concentration (Cs) in cinnamon soil, but not in red soil, because of different dominant components for adsorption in the 2 natural soils. In natural and SOM-free soils, >98% of tetracycline in solution could be sorbed. The adsorption of tetracycline on natural and SOM-free soils was well described by Freundlich adsorption isotherms. Batch adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption of tetracycline on natural red soil was stronger than that on natural cinnamon soil. Adsorption capacity (KF) decreased with an increase in SOM removed from soil, which is attributed to the effect of tetracycline sorbed by SOM in different soils. However, SOM affected the adsorption intensity (n) of different soils diversely; there was a decrease for red soil and an increase for cinnamon soil. In particular, red soil with high Al/Fe hydrous oxides had higher adsorption affinities than cinnamon soil. Soil is an essential part of our ecosystem and plays a crucial role as a nutrient source, provides habitat for plants and other organisms. Overuse of antibiotics has accelerated the development and dissemination of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). ARB and ARGs are recognized as emerging environmental contaminants causing soil pollution and serious risks to public health. ARB and ARGs are discharged into soils through several pathways. Application of manure in agriculture is one of the primary sources of ARB and ARGs dissemination in the soil. Different sources of contamination by ARB and ARGs were reviewed and analyzed as well as dissemination mechanisms in the soil. The effects of ARB and ARGs on soil bacterial community were evaluated. Furthermore, the impact of different sources of manure on soil microbial diversity as well as the effect of antibiotics on the development of ARB and ARGs in soils was analyzed. Protein corona formation is critical for the design of ideal and safe nanoparticles (NPs) for nanomedicine, biosensing, organ targeting, and other applications, but methods to quantitatively predict the formation of the protein corona, especially for functional compositions, remain unavailable. The traditional linear regression model performs poorly for the protein corona, as measured by R2 (less than 0.40). Here, the performance with R2 over 0.75 in the prediction of the protein corona was achieved by integrating a machine learning model and meta-analysis. NPs without modification and surface modification were identified as the two most important factors determining protein corona formation. According to experimental verification, the functional protein compositions (e.g., immune proteins, complement proteins, and apolipoproteins) in complex coronas were precisely predicted with good R² (most over 0.80). Moreover, the method successfully predicted the cellular recognition (e.g., cellular uptake by macrophages and cytokine release) mediated by functional corona proteins. This workflow provides a method to accurately and quantitatively predict the functional composition of the protein corona that determines cellular recognition and nanotoxicity to guide the synthesis and applications of a wide range of NPs by overcoming limitations and uncertainty. The environmental transformations of nanomaterials are correlated with their behaviors and ecological risks. The applications of single-layer molybdenum disulfide (SLMoS2) have rapidly developed in environmental fields, but the potential transformations and biological effects of SLMoS2 remain largely unknown. This study revealed that humic acid (HA, over 10 mg/L) induced the scrolling of SLMoS2 with light irradiation over a 56-day incubation. The colloidal stability of SLMoS2 increased, and the aggregation ratio decreased from 0.59 ± 0.07 to 0.08 ± 0.01 nm/min after HA hybridization. Besides, compared with pristine SLMoS2, the chemical dissolution rate of SLMoS2 was up to 4.6-fold faster with HA exposure. These results demonstrate that HA affects the environmental fate and transformations of SLMoS2. SLMoS2-HA possessed a significantly widened direct band gap (2.06 eV) compared with that of SLMoS2 (1.8 eV). SLMoS2 acted as an electronic acceptor from HA, resulting in the separation of electron-hole pairs. Consequently, SLMoS2-HA exhibited stronger peroxidase-like catalytic activity, which was approximately 2-fold higher than that of SLMoS2. Moreover, the morphology and layered structure of SLMoS2 changed, and the damage SLMoS2 inflicted on microalgae was significantly reduced. The interactions between nanomaterials and plants have attracted increasing attention. However, the systemic stress and recovery patterns of plants in response to nanomaterials and the connections between the molecular responses and the phenotypes remain unclear. Herein, rice was exposed to graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets at 0.01-1.0 mg/L for 7 days under hydroponic exposure, followed by a 7-day post exposure (GO-free). The significant upregulation (p < 0.05) of phenylalanine metabolism, secondary metabolism, and heme peroxidase reflected the stress and recovery patterns of rice roots exposed to GO. GO triggered 27% and more than 50% decreases in hydraulic conductivity and aquaporin gene expression (PIP1-3 and PIP2-2), respectively. The uptake of GO was mediated by aquaporin inhibition. Nanomaterial biotransformation reflected the potential for rice roots to adapt to GO stress. Oxidative stress, especially the downregulation of class III peroxidase mRNAs, were suppressed by GO. Lateral root inhibition, primary root growth, and cell wall synthesis, as forms of resistance to GO stress, were related to the significant (p < 0.05) downregulation of salicylic acid and lignin biosynthesis, as well as the upregulation of jasmonic acid and laccases. The levels of heavy metals in the Binhai New Area Dagang industrial park were investigated by analyzing 10 metals (Mn, As, Cu, Pb, Sr, Cr, Cd, Ni, Hg and Zn) in a series of ultraclean samples collected from 30 sites in the DaGang industrial park. Analysis of the pollution conditions and possible pollution causes and trends using comparative methods provides a basis for pollution control. The results showed that the mean concentrations of several heavy metals in the industrial areas were 473.5 (Mn), 38.1 (Pb), 93.4 (Sr), 25.5 (Cr), 17.2 (Ni), 8.3 (Hg), 10.7 (As), and 0.42(Cd) mg·kg-1. Zinc and Cu are necessary nutritional elements; however, their mean concentrations were only 64.4 and 17.6 mg·kg-1, respectively. The concentrations of Hg and Pb were higher than the values reported in a previous study of this area. The concentrations of As and Cd could not be detected in most territories. The soil properties, particularly the organic matter content, were found to be important factors in the distribution of the heavy metals. The heavy metal concentrations in the Dagang industrial park can provide data references for China to curb the environmental pollution of soil in the Binhai New Area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
