1. Real-Time Adaptive Industrial Robots: Improving Safety And Comfort In Human-Robot Collaboration

Abstract

Industrial robots become increasingly prevalent, resulting in a growing need for intuitive, comforting human-robot collaboration. We present a user-aware robotic system that adapts to operator behavior in real time while non-intrusively monitoring physiological signals to create a more responsive and empathetic environment. Our prototype dynamically adjusts robot speed and movement patterns while measuring operator pupil dilation and proximity. Our user study compares this adaptive system to a non-adaptive counterpart, and demonstrates that the adaptive system significantly reduces both perceived and physiologically measured cognitive load while enhancing usability. Participants reported increased feelings of comfort, safety, trust, and a stronger sense of collaboration when working with the adaptive robot. This highlights the potential of integrating real-time physiological data into human-robot interaction paradigms. This novel approach creates more intuitive and collaborative industrial environments where robots effectively 'read' and respond to human cognitive states, and we feature all data and code for future use., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

2. Dehumanizing Voice Technology: Phonetic & Experiential Consequences of Restricted Human-Machine Interaction

Abstract

The use of natural language and voice-based interfaces gradu-ally transforms how consumers search, shop, and express their preferences. The current work explores how changes in the syntactical structure of the interaction with conversational interfaces (command vs. request based expression modalities) negatively affects consumers' subjective task enjoyment and systematically alters objective vocal features in the human voice. We show that requests (vs. commands) lead to an in-crease in phonetic convergence and lower phonetic latency, and ultimately a more natural task experience for consumers. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work docu-menting that altering the input modality of how consumers interact with smart objects systematically affects consumers' IoT experience. We provide evidence that altering the required input to initiate a conversation with smart objects provokes systematic changes both in terms of consumers' subjective experience and objective phonetic changes in the human voice. The current research also makes a methodological con-tribution by highlighting the unexplored potential of feature extraction in human voice as a novel data format linking consumers' vocal features during speech formation and their sub-jective task experiences.

Abstract

Voice-based interfaces provide new opportunities for firms to interact with consumers along the customer journey. The current work demonstrates across four studies that voice-based (as opposed to text-based) interfaces promote more flow-like user experiences, resulting in more positively-valenced service experiences, and ultimately more favorable behavioral firm outcomes (i.e., contract renewal, conversion rates, and consumer sentiment). Moreover, we also provide evidence for two important boundary conditions that reduce such flow-like user experiences in voice-based interfaces (i.e., semantic disfluency and the amount of conversational turns). The findings of this research highlight how fundamental theories of human communication can be harnessed to create more experiential service experiences with positive downstream consequences for consumers and firms. Abstract

The current research demonstrates how conversational robo advisors as opposed to static, non-conversational robo advisors alter perceptions of trust, the evaluation of a financial services firm, and consumer financial decision making. We develop and empirically test a novel conceptualization of conversational robo advisors building on prior work in human-to-human communication and interpersonal psychology, showing that conversational robo advisors cause greater levels of affective trust compared to non-conversational robo advisors and evoke a more benevolent evaluation of a financial services firm. We demonstrate that this increase in affective trust not only affects firm perception (in terms of benevolence attributions or a more positively-valenced onboarding experience), but has important implications for investor behavior, such as greater recommendation acceptance and an increase in asset allocation toward conversational robo advisors. Abstract

People spend a large portion of their day interacting with vibrating mobile devices, yet how we respond to the vibrotactile sensations emitted by these devices, and their effect on consumer decision-making is largely unknown. Integrating recent work on haptic sensory processing and classical conditioning, the current research examines: (1) the relationship between vibration duration and reward response, (2) to what extent rewarding vibrations modify consumer decision-making, and (3) the underlying mechanism of this effect. We find that mobile vibrations of intermediate length (400ms) evoke a reward response, particularly among younger and more impulsive consumers, which in turn boosts purchasing in ecological online shopping environments. We examine mobile vibration in a variety of experimental settings, drawing on a diverse participant pool, leveraging both controlled experiments and a large, country-wide field experiment to assess theoretically- and practically-important boundary conditions. We further examine the mechanism of this effect, providing direct evidence that vibrations influence consumers due to classical conditioning, such that vibrations become rewarding due to their learned association with positive mobile events. Our findings have important implications for the effective design of haptic interfaces in marketing and the role of mobile vibration stimuli as a novel form of reward.

Why does mass customization succeed in some East Asian markets but fail in others? Building on and extending prior work on uncertainty avoidance, this research suggests that providing mass customization in highly uncertainty-avoiding cultures can have negative consequences for consumers and companies, including longer configuration duration, lower conversion rates to actually purchase the customized product, and a reduced degree of sharing one's product with other consumers. We provide support for those propositions based on two large-scale field studies involving more than 700,000 prospective car buyers in Japan and Taiwan (scoring high on uncertainty avoidance) versus China and Singapore (scoring low on uncertainty avoidance). Our findings on actual customers suggest that neglecting cross-national differences in uncertainty avoidance across East Asia puts both consumers and companies at risk due to more onerous customization experiences for consumers and substantially lower conversion for companies.
