Abstract

In the wake of the highly electrified future ahead of us, the role of energy storage is crucial wherever distributed generation is abundant, such as in microgrid settings. Given the variety of storage options that are becoming more and more economical, determining which type of storage technology to invest in, along with the appropriate timing and capacity becomes a critical research question. It is inevitable that these problems will continue to become increasingly relevant in the future and require strategic planning and holistic and modern frameworks in order to be solved. Reinforcement Learning algorithms have already proven to be successful in problems where sequential decision-making is inherent. In the operations planning area, these algorithms are already used but mostly in short-term problems with well-defined constraints. On the contrary, we expand and tailor these techniques to long-term planning by utilizing model-free algorithms combined with simulation-based models. A model and expansion plan have been developed to optimally determine microgrid designs as they evolve to dynamically react to changing conditions and to exploit energy storage capabilities. We show that it is possible to derive better engineering solutions that would point to the types of energy storage units which could be at the core of future microgrid applications. Another key finding is that the optimal storage capacity threshold for a system depends heavily on the price movements of the available storage units. By utilizing the proposed approaches, it is possible to model inherent problem uncertainties and optimize the whole streamline of sequential investment decision-making.

Abstract

Qubit information processors are increasing in footprint but currently rely on e-beam lithography for patterning the required Josephson junctions (JJs). Advanced optical lithography is an alternative patterning method, and we report on the development of transmon qubits patterned solely with optical lithography. The lithography uses 193 nm wavelength exposure and 300-mm large silicon wafers. Qubits and arrays of evaluation JJs were patterned with process control which resulted in narrow feature distributions: a standard deviation of 0:78% for a 220 nm linewidth pattern realized across over half the width of the wafers. Room temperature evaluation found a 2.8-3.6% standard deviation in JJ resistance in completed chips. The qubits used aluminum and titanium nitride films on silicon substrates without substantial silicon etching. T1 times of the qubits were extracted at 26 - 27 microseconds, indicating a low level of material-based qubit defects. This study shows that large wafer optical lithography on silicon is adequate for high-quality transmon qubits, and shows a promising path for improving many-qubit processors., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Quantum Science and Technology

Abstract

Spatial and temporal variability of HfOx-based resistive random access memory (RRAM) are investigated for manufacturing and product designs. Manufacturing variability is characterized at different levels including lots, wafers, and chips. Bit-error-rate (BER) is proposed as a holistic parameter for the write cycle resistance statistics. Using the electrical in-line-test cycle data, a method is developed to derive BERs as functions of the design margin, to provide guidance for technology evaluation and product design. The proposed BER calculation can also be used in the off-line bench test and build-in-self-test (BIST) for adaptive error correction and for the other types of random access memories., Comment: 4 pages. Abstract

We present a program for the numerical evaluation of scalar integrals and tensor form factors entering the calculation of one-loop amplitudes which supports the use of complex masses in the loop integrals. The program is built on an earlier version of the golem95 library, which performs the reduction to a certain set of basis integrals using a formalism where inverse Gram determinants can be avoided. We evaluated the histologic findings of the extra-articular portion of the LHB tendon and synovial sheath in order to compare those findings to known histologic changes seen in other tendinopathies. Methods: Twenty-six consecutive patients (mean age 45.4±13.7 years) underwent an open subpectoral biceps tenodesis for anterior shoulder pain localized to the bicipital groove. Excised tendons were sent for histologic analysis. Specimens were graded using a semiquantitative scoring system to evaluate tenocyte morphology, the presence of ground substance, collagen bundle characteristics, and vascular changes. Results: Chronic inflammation was noted in only two of 26 specimens, and no specimen demonstrated acute inflammation. Tenocyte enlargement and proliferation, characterized by increased roundness and size of the cell and nucleus with proteoglycan matrix expansion and myxoid degenerative changes, was found in all 26 specimens. Abundant ground substance, collagen bundle changes, and increased vascularization were visualized in all samples. Conclusion: Anterior shoulder pain attributed to the biceps tendon does not appear to be due to an inflammatory process in most cases. The histologic findings of the extra-articular portion of the LHB tendon and synovial sheath are similar to the pathologic findings in de Quervain tenosynovitis at the wrist, and may be due to a chronic degenerative process similar to this and other tendinopathies of the body. 14. A scoping review of systematic reviews on reducing lifestyle risk behaviours in disadvantaged groups

Abstract

Background Lifestyle risk behaviours are key risk factors for non-communicable diseases. Some disadvantaged groups face particularly poor health outcomes, which may be exacerbated by high prevalence of risk behaviours. The aim of this scoping review was to identify and bring together evidence from systematic reviews on reducing risk behaviours in these groups and highlight where there is insufficient evidence to inform policy. Methods MEDLINE and Embase were searched up to October 2020 for English language reviews, with supplementary searching in Epistemonikos and Health Systems Evidence. Systematic reviews reporting behavioural outcomes of interventions targeting smoking, alcohol use, diet or physical inactivity in nine disadvantaged groups were eligible. Reviews of population-level policies reporting differential effects for these groups and qualitative reviews of barriers or facilitators to change were included. Literature was mapped based on the group and behaviour targeted. Results Ninety-two systematic reviews were included. The majority (n = 68) focused on low income or socio-economic status. Fewer reviews were identified that included prisoners (n = 14), deprived areas (n = 12), homeless people (n = 10), people with learning disabilities (n = 9), unemployed people (n = 3) and refugees or asylum seekers (n = 2). We identified no reviews on care leavers or Gypsies, Travellers or Roma. In total only 11 reviews targeted alcohol use. There were some gaps for specific group and behaviour combinations and no intervention reviews on refugees. Conclusions A number of gaps were identified, highlighting where new syntheses or primary studies could add value. For example, reviews on interventions in refugees, Gypsies, Travellers and Roma, and care leavers could be useful for policy-making. Other useful contributions might include an overview of the perceptions of disadvantaged groups allowing common barriers to behaviour change to be identified as well as factors unique to specific groups. Key messages Nearly 100 systematic reviews focused on reducing risk behaviours in disadvantaged groups; they addressed different combinations of behaviours and groups. Gaps in the literature were identified where new syntheses could make a useful contribution to developing programmes and policies.

26. Structural Determination of Lysine-Linked Cisplatin Complexes via IRMPD Action Spectroscopy: NNsand NO–Binding Modes of Lysine to Platinum Coexist

Abstract

Despite its success as an anticancer drug, cisplatin suffers from resistance and produces side effects. To overcome these limitations, amino-acid-linked cisplatin analogues have been investigated. Lysine-linked cisplatin, Lysplatin, (Lys)PtCl2, exhibited outstanding reactivity toward DNA and RNA that differs from that of cisplatin. To gain insight into its differing reactivity, the structure of Lysplatin is examined here using infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) action spectroscopy. To probe the influence of the local chemical environment on structure, the deprotonated and sodium-cationized Lysplatin complexes are examined. Electronic structure calculations are performed to explore possible modes of binding of Lys to Pt, their relative stabilities, and to predict their infrared spectra. Comparisons of the measured IRMPD and predicted IR spectra elucidate the structures contributing to the experimental spectra. Coexistence of two modes of binding of Lys to Pt is found where Lys binds via the backbone and side-chain amino nitrogen atoms, NNs, or to the backbone amino and carboxylate oxygen atoms, NO–. Glycine-linked cisplatin and arginine-linked cisplatin complexes have previously been found to bind only via the NO–binding mode. Present results suggest that the NNsbinding conformers may be key to the outstanding reactivity of Lysplatin toward DNA and RNA.

29. Helping While Competing? The Complex Effects of Competitive Climates on the Prosocial Identity and Performance Relationship

Abstract

Integrating notions of coopetition with social information processing theory, we build and test a theoretical model that explains the paradox that arises when prosocial identifying employees work in competitive climates. Sampling 406 subordinates nested within 91 supervisors over two time‐points, we show that the relationship between prosocial identity and interpersonal helping is stronger when competitive climate is low rather than high. We also find that competitive team climate positively relates to instrumental helping motives (i.e., helping others to gain something in return). In addition, instrumental helping motives significantly moderate the linkage between interpersonal helping and job performance as well as the indirect effect of prosocial identity on job performance via interpersonal helping such that the main and indirect effects became weaker as instrumental helping motives increased. Overall, our findings reveal new insights into how prosocial identifiers incorporate information from social cues to strike a balance between cooperation and competition.

The aim of this paper was to examine the organic, total suspended solids (TSS) and nutrient removal rates of the sand filter, operated in recirculation mode, under incrementally increasing hydraulic and organic loading rates and to propose a field filter-sizing criterion. Best performance was obtained at a system hydraulic loading rate of 10Lm.sup.-2 d.sup.-1; a higher system hydraulic loading rate (of 13.4Lm.sup.-2 d.sup.-1) caused surface ponding. The system hydraulic loading rate of 10Lm.sup.-2 d.sup.-1 gave a filter chemical oxygen demand (COD), TSS, and total kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) loading rate of 14, 3.7, and 2.1gm.sup.-2 d.sup.-1, respectively, and produced consistent COD and TSS removals of greater than 99%, and an effluent NO.sub.3-N concentration of 42mgL.sup.-1 (accounting for an 86% reduction in total nitrogen (Tot-N)). As the proportional surface area requirement for the sand filter described in this study is less than the recommended surface area requirement of a free-water surface (FWS) wetland treating an effluent of similar quality, it could provide an economic and sustainable alternative to conventional wetland treatment. Prendergast Abstract: A laboratory continuous feed biofilm reactor, comprising a bulk fluid reactor, a biofilm plastic module, a feed tank, and pneumatic devices and controls, was operated for a total period of 257 days, including seeding time, to treat domestic-strength synthetic wastewater under increasing ammonium nitrogen (NH.sub.4.sup.+-N) loading rates, ranging from 0.17[+ or -]0.01 (0.71[+ or -]0.06gm.sup.-2 d.sup.-1) to 0.70[+ or -]0.02kgm.sup.-3 d.sup.-1 (2.9[+ or -]0.1gm.sup.-2 d.sup.-1). The biofilm plastic module was moved vertically in and out of the wastewater in continuous cycles. Thin-film decoupling capacitors for use in advanced packages and multichip modules are developed based on ferroelectric lead lanthanum zirconate (PLZT) films. These thin-film capacitors are more advantageous than the multilayer ceramic capacitors and also can be completely integrated into the packaging architecture. These PLZT based films are manufactured by the process of spin coating with metal carboxylate alkoxide solutions.
