Search

In the last few decades, planet search surveys have been focusing on solar-type stars, and only recently the high-mass regimes. This is mostly due to challenges arising from the lack of instrumental precision, and more importantly, the inherent active nature of fast-rotating massive stars. Here, we report NGTS-33b (TOI-6442b), a super-Jupiter planet with mass, radius, and orbital period of 3.6 |$\pm$| 0.3 M |$_{\rm J}$|⁠ , 1.64 |$\pm$| 0.07 R |$_{\rm J}$|⁠ , and |$2.827\,972 \pm 0.000\,001$|  d, respectively. The host is a fast-rotating (⁠|$0.6654 \pm 0.0006$|  d) and hot (T |$_{\rm eff}$| = 7437 |$\pm$| 72 K) A9V type star, with a mass and radius of 1.60 |$\pm$| 0.11 M |$_{\odot }$| and 1.47 |$\pm$| 0.06 R |$_{\odot }$|⁠ , respectively. Planet structure and gyrochronology models show that NGTS-33 is also very young with age limits of 10–50 Myr. In addition, membership analysis points towards the star being part of the Vela OB2 association, which has an age of |$\sim$| 20–35 Myr, thus providing further evidence about the young nature of NGTS-33. Its low bulk density of 0.19 |$\pm$| 0.03 g cm |$^{-3}$| is 13 per cent smaller than expected when compared to transiting hot Jupiters (HJs) with similar masses. Such cannot be solely explained by its age, where an up to 15 per cent inflated atmosphere is expected from planet structure models. Finally, we found that its emission spectroscopy metric is similar to JWST community targets, making the planet an interesting target for atmospheric follow-up. Therefore, NGTS-33b's discovery will not only add to the scarce population of young, massive and HJs, but will also help place further strong constraints on current formation and evolution models for such planetary systems. Hot Jupiters present a unique opportunity for measuring how planet formation history shapes present-day atmospheric composition. However, due to the myriad pathways influencing composition, a well-constructed sample of planets is needed to determine whether formation history can be accurately traced back from atmospheric composition. To this end, the BOWIE-ALIGN survey (A spectral Light Investigation into hot gas Giant origiNs by the collaboration of Bristol, Oxford, Warwick, Imperial, Exeter,  +) will compare the compositions of eight hot Jupiters around F stars, four with orbits aligned with the stellar rotation axis, and four misaligned. Using the alignment as an indicator for planets that underwent disc migration or high-eccentricity migration, one can determine whether migration history produces notable differences in composition between the two samples of planets. This paper describes the planet formation model that motivates our observing programme. Our model traces the accretion of chemical components from the gas and dust in the disc over a broad parameter space to create a full, unbiased model sample from which we can estimate the range of final atmospheric compositions. For high metallicity atmospheres (⁠|$\mathrm{ O}\mathrm{ /H}\ge 10 \times$|  solar), the C/O ratios of aligned and misaligned planets diverge, with aligned planets having lower C/O (⁠|$\lt 0.25$|⁠) due to the accretion of oxygen-rich silicates from the inner disc. However, silicates may rain out instead of releasing their oxygen into the atmosphere. This would significantly increase the C/O of aligned planets (C/O |$\gt 0.6$|⁠), inverting the trend between the aligned and misaligned planets. Discovering transiting exoplanets with relatively long orbital periods (>10 d) is crucial to facilitate the study of cool exoplanet atmospheres (T eq < 700 K) and to understand exoplanet formation and inward migration further out than typical transiting exoplanets. In order to discover these longer period transiting exoplanets, long-term photometric, and radial velocity campaigns are required. We report the discovery of TOI-2447 b (=NGTS-29 b), a Saturn-mass transiting exoplanet orbiting a bright (T = 10.0) Solar-type star (Teff = 5730 K). TOI-2447 b was identified as a transiting exoplanet candidate from a single transit event of 1.3 per cent depth and 7.29 h duration in TESS Sector 31 and a prior transit event from 2017 in NGTS data. Four further transit events were observed with NGTS photometry which revealed an orbital period of P = 69.34 d. The transit events establish a radius for TOI-2447 b of |$0.865 \pm 0.010\, \rm R_{\rm J}$|⁠ , while radial velocity measurements give a mass of |$0.386 \pm 0.025\, \rm M_{\rm J}$|⁠. The equilibrium temperature of the planet is 414 K, making it much cooler than the majority of TESS planet discoveries. We also detect a transit signal in NGTS data not caused by TOI-2447 b, along with transit timing variations and evidence for a ∼150 d signal in radial velocity measurements. It is likely that the system hosts additional planets, but further photometry and radial velocity campaigns will be needed to determine their parameters with confidence. Observations of cooler atmospheres of super-Earths and Neptune sized objects often show flat transmission spectra. The most likely cause of this trend is the presence of aerosols (i.e. clouds and hazes) in the atmospheres of such objects. High-resolution spectroscopy provides an opportunity to test this hypothesis by targeting molecular species whose spectral line cores extend above the level of such opaque decks. In this work, we analyse high-resolution infrared observations of the warm Neptune GJ 3470 b taken over two transits using CARMENES (R ∼ 80 000) and look for signatures of H2O (previously detected using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3 + Spitzer observations) in these transits with a custom pipeline fully accounting for the effects of data cleaning on any potential exoplanet signal. We find that our data are potentially able to weakly detect (∼3σ) an injected signal equivalent to the best-fitting model from previous HST WFC3 +  Spitzer observations. However, we do not make a significant detection using the actual observations. Using a Bayesian framework to simultaneously constrain the H2O volume mixing ratio (VMR) and the cloud top pressure level, we select a family of models compatible with the non-detection. These are either very high VMR cloud-free models, solar-abundance models with a high cloud deck, or sub-solar abundance models with a moderate cloud deck. One of the leading mechanisms invoked to explain the existence of the radius valley is atmospheric mass-loss driven by X-ray and extreme-ultraviolet irradiation, with this process stripping the primordial envelopes of young, small planets to produce the observed bimodal distribution. We present an investigation into the TOI-431 and ν2 Lupi planetary systems, both of which host planets either side of the radius valley, to determine if their architectures are consistent with evolution by the X-ray/ultraviolet (XUV) mechanism. With XMM–Newton , we measure the current X-ray flux of each star, and see evidence for a stellar flare in the TOI-431 observations. We then simulate the evolution of all of the transiting planets across the two systems in response to the high-energy irradiation over their lifetimes. We use the measured X-ray fluxes as an anchor point for the XUV time evolution in our simulations, and employ several different models of estimating mass-loss rates. While the simulations for TOI-431 b encountered a problem with the initial calculated radii, we estimate a likely short (∼Myr) timespan for primordial envelope removal using reasonable assumptions for the initial planet. ν2 Lupi b is likely harder to strip, but is achieved in a moderate fraction of our simulations. None of our simulations stripped any of the lower density planets of their envelope, in line with prediction. Discovering transiting exoplanets with long orbital periods allows us to study warm and cool planetary systems with temperatures similar to the planets in our own Solar system. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission has photometrically surveyed the entire Southern Ecliptic Hemisphere in Cycle 1 (2018 August–2019 July), Cycle 3 (2020 July–2021 June), and Cycle 5 (2022 September–2023 September). We use the observations from Cycle 1 and Cycle 3 to search for exoplanet systems that show a single transit event in each year, which we call duotransits. The periods of these planet candidates are typically in excess of 20 d, with the lower limit determined by the duration of individual TESS observations. We find 85 duotransit candidates, which span a range of host star brightnesses: 8 <  T mag < 14, transit depths between 0.1 per cent and 1.8 per cent, and transit durations between 2 and 10 h with the upper limit determined by our normalization function. The Neptunian desert is a region in period-radius parameter space with very few Neptune-sized planets at short orbital periods. Amongst these, LTT 9779 b is the only known Neptune with a period shorter than 1 d to retain a significant H–He atmosphere. If the Neptune desert is the result of X-ray/EUV-driven photoevaporation, it is surprising that the atmosphere of LTT 9779 b survived the intense bombardment of high-energy photons from its young host star. However, the star has low measured rotational broadening, which points to the possibility of an anomalously slow spin period and hence a faint X-ray emission history that may have failed to evaporate the planet's atmosphere. We observed LTT 9779 with XMM-Newton and measured an upper limit for its X-ray luminosity that is a factor of 15 lower than expected for its age. We also simulated the evaporation past of LTT 9779 b and found that the survival of its atmosphere to the present day is consistent with an unusually faint XUV irradiation history that matches both the X-ray and rotation velocity measurements. We conclude that the anomalously low X-ray irradiation of the one Neptune seen to survive in Neptunian desert supports the interpretation of the desert as primarily a result of photoevaporation. High-cadence observations of high-energy stellar flares from cool and ultracool dwarfs are often limited by the faint nature of their host stars. Many low-mass sources cannot be detected in quiescence by photometric surveys, meaning they are not targeted for high-cadence observations. This reduces the chances of detecting the rarest high-energy flare events. We used the 13-s cadence full-frame images of Next-Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) to search for flares from M and L dwarfs. This included stars that were too faint to detect in quiescence. We detect 160 flares from 135 stars, with spectral types ranging from M3 to L2.5. We use our sample to study the energies, amplitudes and durations of flares from M and L dwarfs. We measure bolometric flare energies up to 4.5 × 1034 erg for ultracool dwarfs, but conclude that we have not reached a maximum limit to the energy released during white-light flares. We use our results to study the incidence rate of flares of mid- and late-M stars, not accounting for age or binarity, and find that 1.4 ± 0.4 and |$9^{+16}_{-3}$|  per cent of mid- and late-M stars, respectively, exhibit flares with amplitudes above 1 mag in the NGTS bandpass. We present a study of rotation across 30 square degrees of the Orion Star-forming Complex, following a ∼200 d photometric monitoring campaign by the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). From 5749 light curves of Orion members, we report periodic signatures for 2268 objects and analyse rotation period distributions as a function of colour for 1789 stars with spectral types F0–M5. We select candidate members of Orion using Gaia data and assign our targets to kinematic sub-groups. We correct for interstellar extinction on a star-by-star basis and determine stellar and cluster ages using magnetic and non-magnetic stellar evolutionary models. Rotation periods generally lie in the range 1–10 d, with only 1.5 per cent of classical T Tauri stars or Class I/II young stellar objects rotating with periods shorter than 1.8 d, compared with 14 per cent of weak-line T Tauri stars or Class III objects. In period–colour space, the rotation period distribution moves towards shorter periods among low-mass (>M2) stars of age 3–6 Myr, compared with those at 1–3 Myr, with no periods longer than 10 d for stars later than M3.5. This could reflect a mass-dependence for the dispersal of circumstellar discs. Finally, we suggest that the turnover (from increasing to decreasing periods) in the period–colour distributions may occur at lower mass for the older-aged population: ∼K5 spectral type at 1–3 Myr shifting to ∼M1 at 3–6 Myr. We model the evaporation histories of the three planets around K2-136, a K-dwarf in the Hyades open cluster with an age of 700 Myr. The star hosts three transiting planets, with radii of 1.0, 3.0, and 1.5 Earth radii, where the middle planet lies above the radius–period valley and the inner and outer planets are below. We use an XMM–Newton observation to measure the XUV radiation environment of the planets, finding that the X-ray activity of K2-136 is lower than predicted by models but typical of similar Hyades members. We estimate the internal structure of each planet, and model their evaporation histories using a range of structure and atmospheric escape formulations. While the precise X-ray irradiation history of the system may be uncertain, we exploit the fact that the three planets must have shared the same history. We find that the Earth-sized K2-136b is most likely rocky, with any primordial gaseous envelope being lost within a few Myr. The sub-Neptune, K2-136c, has an envelope contributing 1–1.7 per cent of its mass that is stable against evaporation thanks to the high mass of its rocky core, whilst the super-Earth, K2-136d, must have a mass at the upper end of the allowed range in order to retain any of its envelope. Our results are consistent with all three planets beginning as sub-Neptunes that have since been sculpted by atmospheric evaporation to their current states, stripping the envelope from planet b and removing most from planet d whilst preserving planet c above the radius-period valley. The dipper is a novel class of young stellar object associated with large drops in flux on the order of 10–50 per cent lasting for hours to days. Too significant to arise from intrinsic stellar variability, these flux drops are currently attributed to disc warps, accretion streams, and/or transiting circumstellar dust. Dippers have been previously studied in young star-forming regions, including the Orion Complex. Using Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) data, we identified variable stars from their light curves. We then applied a machine learning random forest classifier for the identification of new dipper stars in Orion using previous variable classifications as a training set. We discover 120 new dippers, of which 83 are known members of the Complex. We also investigated the occurrence rate of discs in our targets, again using a machine learning approach. We find that all dippers have discs, and most of these are full discs. We use dipper periodicity and model-derived stellar masses to identify the orbital distance to the inner disc edge for dipper objects, confirming that dipper stars exhibit strongly extended sublimation radii, adding weight to arguments that the inner disc edge is further out than predicted by simple models. Finally, we determine a dipper fraction (the fraction of stars with discs which are dippers) for known members of 27.8 ± 2.9 per cent. We are using precise radial velocities from CORALIE together with precision photometry from the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) to follow-up stars with single-transit events detected with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). As part of this survey, we identified a single transit on the star TIC-320687387, a bright (T  = 11.6) G-dwarf observed by TESS in Sectors 13 and 27. From subsequent monitoring of TIC-320687387 with CORALIE, NGTS, and Lesedi we determined that the companion, TIC-320687387 B, is a very low-mass star with a mass of |$96.2 \pm _{2.0}^{1.9}$|   M J and radius of |$1.14 \pm _{0.02}^{0.02}$|   R J placing it close to the hydrogen burning limit (∼80  M J). TIC-320687387 B is tidally decoupled and has an eccentric orbit, with a period of 29.77381 d and an eccentricity of 0.366 ± 0.003. Eclipsing systems such as TIC-320687387 AB allow us to test stellar evolution models for low-mass stars, which in turn are needed to calculate accurate masses and radii for exoplanets orbiting single low-mass stars. The sizeable orbital period of TIC-320687387 B makes it particularly valuable as its evolution can be assumed to be free from perturbations caused by tidal interactions with its G-type host star. We present an analysis of XMM–Newton observations of four stars in the young (670 Myr) open cluster Praesepe. The planets hosted by these stars all lie close in radius–period space to the radius–period valley and/or the Neptunian desert, two features that photoevaporation by X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) photons could be driving. Although the stars are no longer in the saturated regime, strong X-ray and extreme ultraviolet irradiation is still ongoing. Based on EUV time evolution slopes, we derived in a previous paper, in all four cases, two-thirds of their EUV irradiation is still to come. We compare the XMM–Newton light curves to those simultaneously measured with K2 at optical wavelengths, allowing us to search for correlated variability between the X-ray and optical light curves. We find that the X-ray flux decreases and flattens off while the optical flux rises throughout for K2-100, something that could result from active regions disappearing from view as the star spins. Finally, we also investigate possible futures for the four planets in our sample with simulations of their atmosphere evolution still to come, finding that complete photoevaporative stripping of the envelope of three of the four planets is possible, depending on the current planet masses. We study the X‐ray irradiation and likely photoevaporation of the three planets around the star K2‐136. These are the Earth‐sized K2‐136 b, the mini‐Neptune K2‐136 c, and the super‐Earth K2‐136 d. XMM‐Newton observations of the star indicate an X‐ray luminosity of (1.18±0.1)×1028ergs−1 in the range 0.15–2.4 keV, resulting in an activity of LX/Lbol=(1.80±0.68)×10−5. The evaporation past of the planets were modeled using the XUV stellar tracks by Johnstone, Bartel, & Güdel (2020), the energy‐limited mass loss formulation (Erkaev et al., 2007; Lecavelier Des Etangs, 2007), and the thermal evolution formulation by Lopez & Fortney (2014). Our results suggest that planets b and d are most probably purely rocky and have been stripped of their envelopes. On the other hand, planet c likely still has an envelope consisting of 0.8% of the total mass, with its core being relatively large (2.3 RE). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) is a new ground-based sky survey designed to find transiting Neptunes and super-Earths. By covering at least sixteen times the sky area of Kepler, we will find small planets around stars that are sufficiently bright for radial velocity confirmation, mass determination and atmospheric characterisation. The NGTS instrument will consist of an array of twelve independently pointed 20 cm telescopes fitted with red-sensitive CCD cameras. It will be constructed at the ESO Paranal Observatory, thereby benefiting from the very best photometric conditions as well as follow up synergy with the VLT and E-ELT. Our design has been verified through the operation of two prototype instruments, demonstrating white noise characteristics to sub-mmag photometric precision. Detailed simulations show that about thirty bright super-Earths and up to two hundred Neptunes could be discovered. Our science operations are due to begin in 2014.

HIP 41378 f is a temperate 9.2 ± 0.1  R ⊕ planet with period of 542.08 d and an extremely low density of 0.09 ± 0.02 g cm−3. It transits the bright star HIP 41378 (V = 8.93), making it an exciting target for atmospheric characterization including transmission spectroscopy. HIP 41378 was monitored photometrically between the dates of 2019 November 19 and 28. We detected a transit of HIP 41378 f with NGTS, just the third transit ever detected for this planet, which confirms the orbital period. This is also the first ground-based detection of a transit of HIP 41378 f. Additional ground-based photometry was also obtained and used to constrain the time of the transit. The transit was measured to occur 1.50 h earlier than predicted. We use an analytic transit timing variation (TTV) model to show the observed TTV can be explained by interactions between HIP 41378 e and HIP 41378 f. Using our TTV model, we predict the epochs of future transits of HIP 41378 f, with derived transit centres of T C, 4 =  |$2459\,355.087^{+0.031}_{-0.022}$| (2021 May) and T C, 5 =  |$2459\,897.078^{+0.114}_{-0.060}$| (2022 November). Exoplanet atmospheres are known to be vulnerable to mass-loss through irradiation by stellar X-ray and extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) emission. We investigate how this high-energy irradiation varies with time by combining an empirical relation describing stellar X-ray emission with a second relation describing the ratio of solar X-ray to EUV emission. In contrast to assumptions commonly made when modelling atmospheric escape, we find that the decline in stellar EUV emission is much slower than in X-rays, and that the total EUV irradiation of planetary atmospheres is dominated by emission after the saturated phase of high-energy emission (which lasts around 100 Myr after the formation of the star). The EUV spectrum also becomes much softer during this slow decline. Furthermore, we find that the total combined X-ray and EUV emission of stars occurs mostly after the saturated phase. Our results suggest that models of atmospheric escape that focus on the saturated phase of high-energy emission are oversimplified, and when considering the evolution of planetary atmospheres it is necessary to follow EUV-driven escape on Gyr time-scales. This may make it more difficult to use stellar age to separate the effects of photoevaporation and core-powered mass-loss when considering the origin of the planet radius valley. We present the detection of high-energy white-light flares from pre-main-sequence stars associated with the Orion Complex, observed as part of the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). With energies up to 5.2 × 1035 erg these flares are some of the most energetic white-light flare events seen to date. We have used the NGTS observations of flaring and non-flaring stars to measure the average flare occurrence rate for 4 Myr M0–M3 stars. We have also combined our results with those from previous studies to predict average rates for flares above 1 × 1035 erg for early M stars in nearby young associations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We observed a transit of WASP-166 b using nine Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) telescopes simultaneously with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) observations of the same transit. We achieved a photometric precision of 152 ppm per 30 min with the nine NGTS telescopes combined, matching the precision reached by TESS for the transit event around this bright (T  = 8.87) star. The individual NGTS light-curve noise is found to be dominated by scintillation noise and appears free from any time-correlated noise or any correlation between telescope systems. We fit the NGTS data for T C and R p/ R *. We find T C to be consistent to within 0.25σ of the result from the TESS data, and the difference between the TESS and NGTS measured R p/ R * values is 0.9σ. This experiment shows that multitelescope NGTS photometry can match the precision of TESS for bright stars, and will be a valuable tool in refining the radii and ephemerides for bright TESS candidates and planets. We report the discovery of a new ultrashort period (USP) transiting hot Jupiter from the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). NGTS-10b has a mass and radius of |$2.162\, ^{+0.092}_{-0.107}$|   M J and |$1.205\, ^{+0.117}_{-0.083}$|   R J and orbits its host star with a period of 0.7668944 ± 0.0000003 d, making it the shortest period hot Jupiter yet discovered. The host is a 10.4 ± 2.5 Gyr old K5V star (T eff = 4400 ± 100 K) of Solar metallicity ([Fe/H] = −0.02 ± 0.12 dex) showing moderate signs of stellar activity. NGTS-10b joins a short list of USP Jupiters that are prime candidates for the study of star–planet tidal interactions. NGTS-10b orbits its host at just 1.46 ± 0.18 Roche radii, and we calculate a median remaining inspiral time of 38 Myr and a potentially measurable orbital period decay of 7 s over the coming decade, assuming a stellar tidal quality factor |$Q^{\prime }_{\rm s}$| =2 × 107. The Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) is a photometric survey for transiting exoplanets, consisting of 12 identical 0.2‐m telescopes. We report a measurement of the transit of HD 106315 c using a novel observing mode in which multiple NGTS telescopes observed the same target, with the aim of increasing the signal‐to‐noise ratio. Combining the data allows the robust detection of the transit, which has a depth less than 0.1%, rivaling the performance of much larger telescopes. We demonstrate the capability of NGTS to contribute to the follow‐up of K2 and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite discoveries using this observing mode. In particular, NGTS is well‐suited to the measurement of shallow transits of bright targets. We determine rotation periods for 127 stars in the ∼115-Myr-old Blanco 1 open cluster using ∼200 d of photometric monitoring with the Next Generation Transit Survey. These stars span F5–M3 spectral types (1.2 M⊙ ≳  M  ≳ 0.3 M⊙) and increase the number of known rotation periods in Blanco 1 by a factor of four. We determine rotation periods using three methods: Gaussian process (GP) regression, generalized autocorrelation function (G-ACF), and Lomb–Scargle (LS) periodogram, and find that the GP and G-ACF methods are more applicable to evolving spot modulation patterns. Between mid-F and mid-K spectral types, single stars follow a well-defined rotation sequence from ∼2 to 10 d, whereas stars in photometric multiple systems typically rotate faster. This may suggest that the presence of a moderate-to-high mass ratio companion inhibits angular momentum loss mechanisms during the early pre-main sequence, and this signature has not been erased at ∼100 Myr. The majority of mid-F to mid-K stars display evolving modulation patterns, whereas most M stars show stable modulation signals. This morphological change coincides with the shift from a well-defined rotation sequence (mid-F to mid-K stars) to a broad rotation period distribution (late-K and M stars). Finally, we compare our rotation results for Blanco 1 to the similarly aged Pleiades: the single-star populations in both clusters possess consistent rotation period distributions, which suggests that the angular momentum evolution of stars follows a well-defined pathway that is, at least for mid-F to mid-K stars, strongly imprinted by ∼100 Myr. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) produces a large number of single-transit event candidates, since the mission monitors most stars for only ∼27 d. Such candidates correspond to long-period planets or eclipsing binaries. Using the TESS Sector 1 full-frame images, we identified a 7750 ppm single-transit event with a duration of 7 h around the moderately evolved F-dwarf star TIC-238855958 (T mag = 10.23, T eff = 6280 ± 85 K). Using archival WASP photometry we constrained the true orbital period to one of three possible values. We detected a subsequent transit-event with NGTS, which revealed the orbital period to be 38.20 d. Radial velocity measurements from the CORALIE Spectrograph show the secondary object has a mass of M 2 = 0.148 ± 0.003 M⊙, indicating this system is an F–M eclipsing binary. The radius of the M-dwarf companion is R 2 = 0.171 ± 0.003 R⊙, making this one of the most well characterized stars in this mass regime. We present the discovery of NGTS-7Ab, a high-mass brown dwarf transiting an M dwarf with a period of 16.2 h, discovered as part of the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). This is the shortest period transiting brown dwarf around a main or pre-main sequence star to date. The M star host (NGTS-7A) has an age of roughly 55 Myr and is in a state of spin–orbit synchronization, which we attribute to tidal interaction with the brown dwarf acting to spin-up the star. The host star is magnetically active and shows multiple flares across the NGTS and follow-up light curves, which we use to probe the flare–star-spot phase relation. The host star also has an M star companion at a separation of 1.13 arcsec with very similar proper motion and systemic velocity, suggesting that the NGTS-7 system is a hierarchical triple. The combination of tidal synchronisation and magnetic braking is expected to drive on-going decay of the brown dwarf orbit, with a remaining lifetime of only 5–10 Myr. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vetting of exoplanet candidates in transit surveys is a manual process, which suffers from a large number of false positives and a lack of consistency. Previous work has shown that convolutional neural networks (CNN) provide an efficient solution to these problems. Here, we apply a CNN to classify planet candidates from the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). For training data sets we compare both real data with injected planetary transits and fully simulated data, as well as how their different compositions affect network performance. We show that fewer hand labelled light curves can be utilized, while still achieving competitive results. With our best model, we achieve an area under the curve (AUC) score of |$(95.6\pm {0.2}){{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| and an accuracy of |$(88.5\pm {0.3}){{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| on our unseen test data, as well as |$(76.5\pm {0.4}){{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| and |$(74.6\pm {1.1}){{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| in comparison to our existing manual classifications. The neural network recovers 13 out of 14 confirmed planets observed by NGTS, with high probability. We use simulated data to show that the overall network performance is resilient to mislabelling of the training data set, a problem that might arise due to unidentified, low signal-to-noise transits. Using a CNN, the time required for vetting can be reduced by half, while still recovering the vast majority of manually flagged candidates. We present the detection of a Δ V  ∼ −10 flare from the ultracool L2.5 dwarf ULAS J224940.13−011236.9 with the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). The flare was detected in a targeted search of late-type stars in NGTS full-frame images and represents one of the largest flares ever observed from an ultracool dwarf. This flare also extends the detection of white-light flares to stars with temperatures below 2000 K. We calculate the energy of the flare to be |$3.4^{+0.9}_{-0.7}\times 10^{33}$|  erg, making it an order of magnitude more energetic than the Carrington event on the Sun. π Men c was recently announced as the first confirmed exoplanet from the TESS mission. The planet has a radius of just 2 R⊕ and it transits a nearby Sun-like star of naked-eye brightness, making it the ideal target for atmospheric characterization of a super-Earth. Here we analyse archival ROSAT and Swift observations of π Men in order to determine the X-ray and extreme-ultraviolet irradiation of the planetary atmosphere and assess whether atmospheric escape is likely to be on-going. We find that π Men has a similar level of X-ray emission to the Sun, with |$L_{\rm X}/L_{\rm bol} = (4.84^{+0.92}_{-0.84})\times 10^{-7}$|⁠. However, due to its small orbital separation, the high-energy irradiation of the super-Earth is around 2000 times stronger than suffered by the Earth. We show that this is sufficient to drive atmospheric escape at a rate greater than that readily detected from the warm Neptune GJ 436b. Furthermore, we estimate π Men to be four times brighter at Ly α than GJ 436. Given the small atmospheric scale heights of super-Earths, together with their potentially cloudy atmospheres, and the consequent difficulty in measuring transmission spectra, we conclude that ultraviolet absorption by material escaping π Men c presents the best opportunity currently to determine the atmospheric composition of a super-Earth. We present the detection of an energetic flare on the pre-main-sequence M3 star NGTS J121939.5–355557, which we estimate to be only 2 Myr old. The flare had an energy of |$3.2\pm ^{0.4}_{0.3}\times 10^{36}$|  erg and a fractional amplitude of 7.2 ± 0.8, making it one of the most energetic flares seen on an M star. The star is also X-ray active, in the saturated regime with log  L X/ L Bol = −3.1. In the flare's peak, we have identified multimode quasi-periodic pulsations formed of two statistically significant periods of approximately 320 and 660 s. This flare is one of the largest amplitude events to exhibit such pulsations. The shorter period mode is observed to start after a short-lived spike in flux lasting around 30 s, which would not have been resolved in Kepler or TESS short-cadence modes. Our data show how the high cadence of the Next Generation Transient Survey (NGTS) can be used to apply solar techniques to stellar flares and to identify potential causes of the observed oscillations. Context. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has been successfully launched and has begin data acquisition. To expedite the science that may be performed with the resulting data it is necessary to gain a good understanding of planetary yields. Given the observing strategy employed by TESS the probability of detecting single transits in long period systems is increased. These systems require careful consideration. Aims. We aim to simulate the number of TESS transit detections during its two-year mission with a particular emphasis on single transits. We also aim to determine the feasibility of ground-based follow-up observations from a single site. Methods. A distribution of planets was simulated around the approximately four million stars in the TESS candidate target list. These planets were tested for detectable transits and characterised. Based on simulated parameters the single transit detections were further analysed to determine which are amenable to ground-based follow-up. Results. TESS will discover an approximate lower bound of 4700 planets with around 460 being single transits. A large fraction of these will be observable from a single ground-based site. This paper finds that, in a single year, approximately 1000 transit events of around 320 unique TESS single transit detections are theoretically observable. Conclusions. As we consider longer period exoplanets, the need for exploring single transit detections increases. For periods ≳45 days the number of single transit detections outnumber multitransits by a factor of three (82 ± 18 and 25 ± 7, respectively) a factor which only grows as longer period detections are considered. Therefore, based on this paper, it is worth expending the extra effort required to follow-up these more challenging, but potentially very rewarding, discoveries. Additionally, we conclude that a large fraction of these targets can be theoretically observed from a single ground-based site.
