Seasonal and day–night changes in the vertical distribution and habitat of mesopelagic crustaceans, Gnathophausia longispina and G. elegans were investigated in the East China Sea during four oceanographic cruises carried out between May 2012 and January 2013. The abundance of G. elegans was approximately one-tenth that of G. longispina, although both species appeared throughout the year. The main distribution range of G. longispina was 100–600 m, and G. elegans was 600–700 m. Only G. longispina showed ontogenetic differences in diel vertical migration (ODVM); most individuals inhabited depths of 500–600 m during the day and 100–400 m at night when younger individuals inhabited shallower layers than mature individuals. Overall, both species showed a small overlap in their vertical distribution at around 600-m depth. Vertical segregation of habitat could have facilitated the sympatric biogeographic distribution of these two congeneric species around the West/Central Pacific Ocean.

Background Tetralogy of Fallot is the most common cyanotic congenital heart disease. Patients with the condition have a high risk of developing chronic kidney disease. Treatment of kidney disease in patients with complex hemodynamics presents unique challenges. However, there are very few reports on the treatment of end-stage renal failure in patients with tetralogy of Fallot. Case presentation We present a rare case of peritoneal dialysis in a 47-year-old man with tetralogy of Fallot who had not undergone intracardiac repair. Peritoneal dialysis successfully removed fluids and solutes without adversely affecting the patient’s hemodynamics. Our patient was managed with peritoneal dialysis for 5 years before he succumbed to sepsis secondary to digestive tract perforation. Conclusions In this paper, we discuss the importance of monitoring acid–base balance, changes in cyanosis, and hyperviscosity syndrome during peritoneal dialysis in patients with tetralogy of Fallot. Lower leg edema and B-type natriuretic peptide level were useful monitoring parameters in this case. This case illustrates that with attention to the patient’s unique requirements, peritoneal dialysis can provide successful renal replacement therapy without compromising hemodynamics in patients with tetralogy of Fallot.

We have developed a test setup to measure frequency up-conversion gain in superconductor–insulator–superconductor (SIS) junctions at W band (75–110 GHz). A conventional SIS mixer with Nb/AlOx/Nb tunnel junctions was used as a frequency up-converter. An up-converted signal is measured by a room-temperature down-converter system. We observed distinct intermediate frequency responses to signal inputs from a continuous microwave source. The measured single-sideband up-conversion gain in SIS junctions was clearly positive (> 0 dB) with input frequency less than 2 GHz, which was well-calibrated by using an input from the continuous-wave source.

Background Esophageal involvement length (EIL) is a promising indicator of metastasis or recurrence in mediastinal lymph nodes (MLNs) in adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction (EGJ). This study aimed to elucidate the accuracy of the preoperative endoscopic evaluations of EIL and its clinical significance in this disease. Materials and methods In total, 75 patients with Siewert type II (N = 53) or III (N = 22) adenocarcinoma of the EGJ, who underwent surgical resection without preoperative therapy between 1995 and 2016 were enrolled. We retrospectively examined the accuracy of the preoperative endoscopic evaluations of EIL (preoperative EIL), compared to the pathologically evaluated EIL. Finally, we investigated the association between preoperative EIL and metastasis or recurrence in MLNs. Results The accuracy of the preoperative EIL within a 1-cm interval was only 53.3%. Among patients with discordance between the pre- and postoperative evaluations, 68.6 % had the underestimation in the preoperative EIL. pN1–3 (OR = 5.85, 95% CI: 1.03–33.17) and undifferentiated histologic type (OR = 2.52, 95% CI: 0.89–7.14) were potential risk factors for the discordance. Regarding metastasis or recurrence in MLNs, preoperative EIL of 2–3 cm (OR = 10.41, 95% CI: 1.35–80.11) and >3 cm (OR = 8.33, 95% CI: 1.09–63.96) were independent predictors. Conclusion Although the accuracy of the endoscopic evaluations of EIL is insufficient with many underestimations, EIL should be assessed in preoperative staging because of significant predictive power for metastasis or recurrence in MLNs.

An 86-year-old man presented with a pulsatile mass in the anterior compartment of the right lower leg. He had become aware of it two months earlier. Computed tomography angiography revealed a fusiform 3.2×5 cm aneurysm of the anterior tibial artery. Mural thrombosis in the aneurysm was absent. Peripheral pulse was normal. We performed aneurysmectomy and revascularization using a saphenous vein graft. Histological findings revealed that the mass was a true aneurysm. The clinical course was good, and the graft has remained patent for six months.

A coupling device, which can extract coherent edge radiation (CER) from an optical cavity for a free-electron laser (FEL) without damaging the FEL due to diffraction loss, was developed at Nihon University. We successfully observed the CER beam with a power of 1 mW or more in the terahertz range during FEL oscillation. It is revealed that the CER power changed with the detuning of the optical cavity and the dependence of the CER power on the detuning length differs from that of the FEL power. The measured CER spectra indicate that the longitudinal electron distribution in a bunch is modulated by the FEL oscillation with a period corresponding to the FEL slippage length. We herein report the characteristics of the CER with FEL oscillation in detail. These results demonstrate that the CER is excellent tool to reveal the overall effect of FEL interaction on electron distribution in a bunch.

NAOJ have studied wideband receiver technologies at submillimeter wavelengths toward implementation as future upgrades into the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array telescope. We have developed critical components and devices such as waveguide components and superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixers targeting radio frequencies (RF) in the 275-500 GHz range and an intermediate frequency (IF) bandwidth of 3-22 GHz. Based on the developed components, quantum-limited low-noise performance has been demonstrated by using a double-sideband receiver frontend in combination with a high-speed digitizer. In addition, a preliminary demonstration of a wideband RF/IF sideband-separating SIS mixer was performed. This paper describes the status of our efforts to develop technology toward wideband receivers for ALMA.

This study presents a novel technology to measure electron bunch length with a high time resolution by measuring coherent synchrotron radiation using a narrow-band detector at Laboratory for Electron Beam Research and Application (LEBRA)&mdash, an S-band linear accelerator facility for free-electron lasers. The form factor was observed to decrease exponentially with charge&mdash, in concordance with the relationship between the intensity of the coherent synchrotron radiation and the magnitude of electron bunch charge&mdash, in the region in which the effect of electron bunch charge on bunch length is negligible. The calculated root-mean-square bunch length was observed to agree well with the value determined from the spectral shape obtained. The aforementioned results are expected to be useful in real-time observation of small changes in electron bunches in advanced accelerators.

Pancreatic metastasis from prostate cancer (PC) is quite rare. Herein, we report the case of a 67-year-old man with pancreatic metastasis from a neuroendocrine differentiated PC (NEDPC), a local recurrence after radical prostatectomy and androgen deprivation therapy for 6 years. Chemoradiotherapy was initiated for the locally recurrent NEDPC, and it had almost disappeared after the therapy. However, rapidly enlarged pancreatic metastasis from the NEDPC was detected 6 months after therapy. There is no standard treatment available for pancreatic metastasis from NEDPC owing to its rarity; hence, further knowledge and clinical experience regarding it are crucial.

A research program towards an attosecond photon source based on high-harmonic generation driven by mid-infrared FEL oscillators has been established. We present the scope and the current status of the research program.

Introduction A part of hypercalcemia is a paraneoplastic syndrome. Its association with lymph node metastasis of bladder cancer has been infrequently reported in the literature. Case presentation A 75-year-old male presented with gross hematuria and was diagnosed with bladder cancer without metastasis. Following neoadjuvant chemotherapy, radical cystectomy was performed. The surgical margin was negative. The bladder cancer was classified as pT3bN0 and mainly constituted squamous differentiated urothelial carcinoma and sarcomatoid variant. His perioperative serum calcium levels were normal. At 6 months of surgery, computed tomography revealed lymph node enlargement, and additional 2 weeks later, he developed epileptic seizures with a serum corrected calcium level of 18.7 mg/dL. He was diagnosed with hypercalcemia caused by the lymph node metastasis of bladder cancer. Despite receiving several supportive therapies for 22 days, he died. Conclusion Hypercalcemia associated with bladder cancer is highly resistant to existing therapy, particularly when caused by cancer metastasis.

Introduction Liposarcoma is a malignant neoplasm of the adipose tissue, and dedifferentiated liposarcoma is a relatively rare subtype. Liposarcomas are typically located in the lower extremities or retroperitoneum, but dedifferentiated liposarcoma of the spermatic cord is rare and no case of it with macroscopic ossification has been reported in the literature. Case presentation A male presented to our hospital with a painful, palpable, and hard left suprapubic mass, formed over 3 months. The mass was diagnosed as a spermatic cord tumor and was resected using high orchiectomy. Due to the histological diagnosis of dedifferentiated spermatic cord liposarcoma with ossification and positive margins, a second extended resection and adjuvant radiotherapy were performed. Conclusion To differentiate spermatic cord liposarcoma preoperatively is difficult. There is no gold standard treatment for it, although surgical complete resection with clear microscopic margins would be the most effective treatment.

We propose a new observing method for single-dish millimeter and submillimeter spectroscopy using a heterodyne receiver equipped with a frequency-modulating local oscillator (FMLO). Unlike conventional switching methods, which extract astronomical signals by subtracting the reference spectra of off-sources from those of on-sources, the FMLO method does not need to obtain any off-source spectra; rather, it estimates them from the on-source spectra themselves. The principle is a high dump-rate (10 Hz) spectroscopy with radio frequency modulation (FM) achieved by fast sweeping of a local oscillator (LO) of a heterodyne receiver: Because sky emission (i.e., off-source) fluctuates as $1/f$-type and is spectrally correlated, it can be estimated and subtracted from time-series spectra (a timestream) by principal component analysis. Meanwhile astronomical signals remain in the timestream since they are modulated to a higher time-frequency domain. The FMLO method therefore achieves (1) a remarkably high observation efficiency, (2) reduced spectral baseline wiggles, and (3) software-based sideband separation. We developed an FMLO system for the Nobeyama 45-m telescope and a data reduction procedure for it. Frequency modulation was realized by a tunable and programmable first local oscillator. With observations of Galactic sources, we demonstrate that the observation efficiency of the FMLO method is dramatically improved compared to conventional switching methods. Specifically, we find that the time to achieve the same noise level is reduced by a factor of 3.0 in single-pointed observations and by a factor of 1.2 in mapping observations. The FMLO method can be applied to observations of fainter ($\sim$mK) spectral lines and larger ($\sim$deg$^{2}$) mapping. Light perception is an intriguing subject, and it has been demonstrated that some animals can perceive wavelengths beyond human vision. However, it is still controversial whether animals can see mid-infrared radiation. A combination of two free-electron laser (FEL) facilities, LEBRA-FEL (Nihon University) and KU-FEL (Kyoto University), can provide light sources with high peak power and spatially coherent monochromatic wavelengths that are continuously tuneable from 400 nm to 20 μm. We show that the crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) compound eye responds to pulsed mid-infrared FELs (1 Hz for KU-FEL; 2 Hz for LEBRA-FEL) from 3 to 17 μm. Our finding provides insight into the animal’s visual sensing of mid-infrared radiation, and that the sensing does not depend on thermal effects. Although the behavioural reason for vision in this wavelength range and the mechanism are still under investigation, understanding this type of visual sensing may lead to applications other than photophysical applications.

The high heterogeneity of hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) complicates stratification of HCC patients for treatment. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a comprehensive panel of HCC biomarkers related to tumour behaviour and cancer prognosis. Resected HCCs from 251 patients were stained for hepatic progenitor cell (HPC) markers epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM), neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM), delta-like 1 homolog (DLK1), and cytokeratin 19 (CK19). Staining patterns were analysed for their prognostic association with relapse-free survival and overall survival. α-Fetoprotein (AFP), lectin-reactive α-fetoprotein (AFP-L3), and des-γ-carboxy prothrombin (DCP) were assessed as indicators of HPC protein expression. Expression pattern of HPC markers correlated with tumour malignancy indicated by high AFP/AFP-L3 serum levels, more frequent vascular invasion, and poorer tumour differentiation. EpCAM expression, DCP ≥300 mAU/ml, age ≥60, and Child-Pugh score grade B or C were independent prognostic factors of poor outcome and were used in a new scoring system for HCC prognosis after operation. Expression of two or more HPC markers was a significant predictor of poor HCC outcome and serum levels of AFP/AFP-L3 correlated with the expression of HPC proteins. Our study paved the way for further elucidation of the association among HPC markers, serum tumour markers, and HCC clinical outcome for precision medicine.

Temperature and pressure are essential parameters in the synthesis, evaluation, and application of functional materials. This study proposes the addition of a heating function to a high-pressure diamond anvil cell (DAC) with in-situ measurement probes. The proposed DAC allows for simultaneous control of temperature and pressure within the sample space and can be used to synthesize functional materials under extreme conditions. The various components, namely the heater, thermometer, and measurement probes, were fabricated with a boron-doped diamond epitaxial film and could be used repeatedly. The developed DAC was used to successfully conduct the high-pressure annealing of La(O,F)BiS$_{2}$ single crystal and the high-pressure synthesis of EuFBiS$_{2}$ superconductors. The proposed technique shows promise for further exploration of superconductors to broaden the research field.

The X-ray source based on parametric X-ray radiation (PXR) has been regularly providing a coherent X-ray beam for application studies at Nihon University. Recently, three dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) has become one of the most important applications of the PXR source. The methodology referred to as K-edge subtraction (KES) imaging is a particularly successful application utilizing the energy selectivity of PXR. In order to demonstrate the applicability of PXR-KES, a simultaneous KES experiment for a specimen containing strontium was performed using a PXR beam having an energy near the Sr K-edge of 16.1 keV. As a result, the 3D distribution of Sr was obtained by subtraction between the two simultaneously acquired tomographic images.

This paper presents a method for measuring the capacitance of superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) junctions with a 4-K probe station. The probe station can be used to perform on-wafer characterization of sample lots at frequencies ranging from dc to microwave. In our study, we evaluated SIS junctions that had a variety of areas, and estimated the capacitance after subtracting the parasitic elements of the probe contact pad. The results show that the RNC products for the evaluated junctions were uniform within +/-5% across the wafer.

Duodenal and rectal obstructions due to urological malignancies are relatively uncommon. We report an autopsy case of an 83-year-old man with a history of renal pelvic cancer who presented these obstructions. Autopsy revealed that urothelial cancer infiltrated the bladder wall, duodenal wall, rectal wall, and prostate and widely spread in the retroperitoneal lymphatic vessel. We concluded that renal pelvic cancer recurred in the bladder wall and then infiltrated into each organ because of lymphatic dissemination. The gastrointestinal obstructions due to urinary tract cancer were lethal. Further knowledge and clinical experience regarding these types of obstructions are crucial. Cerebral infarction in patients with cancer is often called Trousseau's syndrome, which is a cancer-associated hypercoagulative state that causes thrombosis; however, the syndrome is rarely caused by bladder cancer. We report a case of Trousseau's syndrome manifesting as multiple cerebral infarctions caused by advanced bladder cancer in a 46-year-old male patient. The patient died due to the infarctions in the hospital. The prognosis of patients with Trousseau's syndrome caused by advanced cancer is poor. According to changing urological clinical settings, considering the risk of Trousseau's syndrome has become crucial for urologists treating patients with advanced cancer. We developed a novel method for element detection utilizing an x-ray source based on parametric x-ray radiation (PXR), an accelerator-based light source at the Laboratory for Electron Beam Research and Application (LEBRA), Nihon University. The method is a type of $K$-edge subtraction (KES) imaging that uses the drastic change of x-ray absorption around the $K$-shell absorption edge of the target element. Using the properties of PXR, simultaneous KES imaging is possible, and can easily be applied to 3-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT). We demonstrated the feasibility of simultaneous KES-CT in our previous work. In this study, we investigate the quantitative performance of simultaneous KES imaging for a sample containing the element strontium (Sr) for which the $K$-edge energy is 16.1 keV. Results of a simultaneous KES-CT experiment employing the LEBRA-PXR source confirm that the imaging method can provide a 3D distribution of the element with a value proportional to the Sr concentration. Concerning sensitivity to element concentration, at least in the region of 0.5%-concentration, the sample was successfully distinguished from the region without Sr in the 3D tomographic image obtained using the element-imaging technique.

Extranodal marginal zone lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) of the thymus is reported to have characteristic features that distinguish it from MALT lymphoma of other organs; it is proposed to be a distinct clinicopathological subgroup of MALT lymphoma. We herein present a case of thymic MALT lymphoma accompanied by Sjögren's syndrome, involving the first report of a thymic MALT lymphoma patient carrying a chromosomal abnormality of 8q24. No c-myc gene translocation or c-Myc protein overexpression was observed, suggesting that c-myc was not involved in lymphomagenesis or progression. Although we did not examine the mechanisms by which the lymphoma developed, this chromosomal structural change in 8q24 may be associated with the pathogenesis in our case.

In this study, we designed and experimentally evaluated a series-connected array of superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) junctions in the 100-GHz band mixer for the multi-beam receiver FOREST on the Nobeyama 45-m millimeter-wave telescope. The construction of the junction chip comprised a waveguide probe antenna, impedance matching circuit, SIS array junction, and choke filter, which were made from a superconducting niobium planar circuit on a quartz substrate. The multi-stage impedance matching circuit between the feed point and the SIS junction was designed as a capacitively loaded transmission line, and it comprised two sections with high (~90 Ohm) and low (~10 Ohm) characteristic impedance transmission lines. The structure of this tuning line was simple and easy to fabricate, and the feed impedance matched with the SIS junction in a wide frequency range. The signal coupling efficiency was more than 92% and the expected receiver noise temperature was approximately two times the quantum limit for 75-125 GHz based on quantum theory. The array junction devices with 3-6 connected junctions were fabricated and we measured their performance in terms of the receiver noise temperature and gain compression in the laboratory. We successfully developed an array junction device with a receiver noise temperature of ~15-30 K and confirmed that the improvement in the saturation power corresponded to the number of junctions. Development of THz wave source has been underway at Nihon University in collaboration with National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. The THz wave transport lines have been constructed on the same axis as the X-ray and FEL beam line. The average intensity of the backward THz CTR wave obtained at the output port of the Parametric Xray Radiation beam line in the accelerator room has been 1 mJ/macro-pulse. The superposition transport system of the THz waves to the X-ray beam-line was installed in a vacuum chamber. Additionally, the energy of the CER as high as 0.2 mJ/macro-pulse were achieved with the experimental room.

We study a combination of velocity bunchings and the coherent undulator radiation at THz region by simulation. The combination of velocity bunchings brings some freedom in energy choice while keeping the bunch length shorter efficiently. Hence the coherent condition can be met for THz radiation at undulator allowing some range of radiation wavelength.

Nihon University and National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology have planned to develop an intense terahertz-wave (THz-wave) source based on coherent Cherenkov radiation (CCR) at Laboratory for Electron Beam Research and Application (LEBRA) in Nihon University. By passing an electron beam through a hollow conical dielectric with apex facing the incident electron beam, the wave front of CCR generated on the inner surface of the hollow conical dielectric is matched to the basal plane. The CCR matched to a circle plane wave is more powerful than conventional THz-wave sources based on electron accelerators. A hollow conical high-resistance silicon with a diameter of the basal plane of 40 mm and an inner diameter of 6 mm will emit the THz-wave beam with a macropulse energy of 14 mJ at LEBRA.

We study the effect of a combination of velocity bunchings and its application to THz coherent undulator radiation at LEBRA, Nihon U. by simulations. The velocity bunching is a technique that is commonly used to make the bunch length shorter at lower energies. However, since one velocity bunching has a correlation between bunch energy and length, we may not have so much room to change energies to obtain different coherent radiation wavelengths. Hence we propose a combination of velocity bunchings, that relaxes the restrictive correlation. We have three 4m traveling-wave accelerator tubes at LEBRA, Nihon U. The undulator is installed after the acceleration tubes and 2 x 45 degree bending magnets. Since the design of current undulator requires less than 25 MeV beam energy to obtain the radiation at THz region, the velocity bunching is reasonable for coherent radiation. We show the simulation results of a combination of velocity bunchings of the three tubes and the magnetic bunching at bending magnets, suitable for the coherent undulator radiation., Proceedings of the 9th Int. We propose a high-peak-power terahertz-wave source based on an electron accelerator. By passing an electron beam through a hollow conical dielectric with apex facing the incident electron beam, the wave front of coherent Cherenkov radiation generated on the inner surface of the hollow conical dielectric matches the basal plane. Using the electron beam generated at the Laboratory for Electron Beam Research and Application at Nihon University, the calculated power of coherent Cherenkov radiation that matched the circular plane (CCR-MCP) was above 1 MW per micropulse with a short interval of 350 ps, for wavelengths ranging from 0.5 to 5 mm. The electron beam is not lost for generating the CCR-MCP beam by using the hollow conical dielectric. It is possible to combine the CCR-MCP beams with other light sources based on an accelerator.

Element-sensitive computed tomography (CT) experiments were carried out based on the absorption edge of a specific element using a finely tunable X-ray beam generated by parametric X-ray radiation (PXR). Tomographic images of specimens containing strontium were measured at energies both lower and higher than that of the Sr absorption edge. The difference between the images of the two energies successfully reveals the three-dimensional distributions of Sr. The results demonstrate that this method is effective for elemental analysis of considerably thick samples and could complement X-ray fluorescence analysis.

Male mammary Paget’s disease (MPD) is extremely rare. Furthermore, MPD with invasion downward into the dermis of the male nipple has been reported rarely. A 56-year-old Japanese man presented with a lump and eczema in the right nipple–areola area. Ultrasonography revealed only a cystic lesion below the right areola. With a diagnosis of MPD with invasion into the dermis associated with ductal carcinoma in situ, mastectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy were performed. MPD with dermal invasion is extremely rare, and only one male case has been reported in the English literature; therefore, the current case is the second case of male MPD with dermal invasion.

In mathematics education, understanding the concepts of given domains in terms of conceptual and procedural knowledge is essential. We have developed a framework for case study of children studying mathematical logic and related concepts using the automated theorem proving software Theorema. Theorema allows the user to organize mathematical knowledge as hierarchies of interdependent theories. Here, we present a framework for exploring the different inference processes of children studying mathematical logic using the Theorema software’s automated proof generator.

The usefulness of magnifying endoscopy with narrow-band imaging (ME-NBI) for the diagnosis of early gastric cancer is well known, however, there are no evaluation criteria. The aim of this study was to devise and evaluate a novel diagnostic algorithm for ME-NBI in depressed early gastric cancer. Between August, 2007 and May, 2011, 90 patients with a total of 110 depressed gastric lesions were enrolled in the study. A diagnostic algorithm was devised based on ME-NBI microvascular findings: microvascular irregularity and abnormal microvascular patterns (fine network, corkscrew and unclassified patterns). The diagnostic efficiency of the algorithm for gastric cancer and histological grade was assessed by measuring its mean sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and accuracy. Furthermore, inter- and intra-observer variation were measured. In the differential diagnosis of gastric cancer from non-cancerous lesions, the mean sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and accuracy of the diagnostic algorithm were 86.7, 48.0, 94.4, 26.7, and 83.2%, respectively. Furthermore, in the differential diagnosis of undifferentiated adenocarcinoma from differentiated adenocarcinoma, the mean sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and accuracy of the diagnostic algorithm were 61.6, 86.3, 69.0, 84.8, and 79.1%, respectively. For the ME-NBI final diagnosis using this algorithm, the mean κ values for inter- and intra-observer agreement were 0.50 and 0.77, respectively. In conclusion, the diagnostic algorithm based on ME-NBI microvascular findings was convenient and had high diagnostic accuracy, reliability and reproducibility in the differential diagnosis of depressed gastric lesions.

Computed tomography (CT) for light materials such as soft biological tissues was performed using a monochromatic X-ray beam provided by a parametric X-ray radiation (PXR) source at the Laboratory for Electron Beam Research and Application (LEBRA) of Nihon University. Using a high-efficiency flat panel detector (FPD), each projection image for CT was taken with exposure times of 5 or 10 s, and 60–360 projection images in each run were obtained with total measurement time of 5 min to 1 h. CT images were obtained from the projection images using the conventional calculation method. The typical tomograms obtained had sharp outlines, which are likely attributable to the propagation-based phase contrast.

We present a case of classical Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) co-occurring with histological features of Castleman's disease (CD). A 25-year-old man presented with left supraclavicular and axillary lymph node swelling and mediastinal mass. Using an initial biopsy specimen from left axillary lymph node, a tentative diagnosis of multicentric CD of plasma cell type was made. The serum level of interleukin-6 (IL-6) was elevated. The patient was treated with immunosuppressive therapy containing tocilizumab (TCZ). Shrinkage of mediastinal mass and axillary lymph nodes was seen; however, swelling of his left axillary lymph nodes reemerged, even after therapy with TCZ. A second left axillary lymph node biopsy was performed and a diagnosis of nodular sclerosis of classical HL without histologic features of CD was made. The initial biopsy specimen was re-examined, and scattered CD30+ Hodgkin/Reed-Sternberg cells were found in the interfollicular area. Interestingly, Hodgkin/Reed-Sternberg cells and surrounding reactive cells in both lymph nodes were stained with anti-IL-6 antibody. We emphasize that biopsy specimens with HL involvement may also have histologic features reminiscent of those seen in CD. To our knowledge, this is the first report to provide a detailed description of this pathology, including a survey of IL-6 and clinical course upon treatment with TCZ.

In the application of lasers in dentistry, there is a delicate balance between the benefits gained from laser treatment and the heat-related damage arising from laser irradiation. Hence, it is necessary to understand the different processes associated with the irradiation of lasers on dental materials. To obtain insight for the development of a safe and general-purpose laser for dentistry, the present study examines the physical effects associated with the irradiation of a near-infrared free-electron laser (FEL) on the surface of a commonly used silver dental alloy. The irradiation experiments using a 2900-nm FEL confirmed the formation of a pit in the dental alloy. The pit was formed with one macro-pulse of FEL irradiation, therefore, suggesting the possibility of efficient material processing with an FEL. Additionally, there was only a slight increase in the silver alloy temperature (less than 0.9 °C) despite the long duration of FEL irradiation, thus inferring that fixed prostheses in the oral cavity can be processed by FEL without thermal damage to the surrounding tissue. These results indicate that dental hard tissues and dental materials in the oral cavity can be safely and efficiently processed by the irradiation of a laser, which has the high repetition rate of a femtosecond laser pulse with a wavelength around 2900 nm.

This study was conducted to investigate the distribution of rotavirus genotypes in Nara Prefecture, Japan before and after the introduction of rotavirus vaccination in 2011. Since the 2011/2012 season, DS-1-like G1P[8] strains have been detected in Nara Prefecture, accounting for about half of all strains in the 2014/2015 season. During the 2015/2016 season, no DS-1-like G1P[8] strains were detected; G2P[4] was the predominant genotype.

In order to minimize the size of the X-ray source for a U-shaped rotating anticathode X-ray generator, the electron beam is focused over a short distance by a combined-function bending magnet. Simulation predicts that the beam brightness will reach almost 500 kW mm−2 for a 120 keV/75 mA beam., A new type of rotating anticathode X-ray generator, where an electron beam of up to 60 keV irradiates the inner surface of a U-shaped Cu anticathode, has achieved a beam brilliance of 130 kW mm−2 (at 2.3 kW). A higher-flux electron beam is expected from simulation by optimizing the geometry of a combined-function-type magnet instead of the fringing field of the bending magnet. In order to minimize the size of the X-ray source the electron beam has been focused over a short distance by a new combined-function bending magnet, whose geometrical shape was determined by simulation using the Opera-3D, General Particle Tracer and CST-STUDIO codes. The result of the simulation clearly shows that the role of combined functions in both the bending and the steering magnets is important for focusing the beam to a small size. FWHM sizes of the beam are predicted by simulation to be 0.45 mm (horizontal) and 0.05 mm (vertical) for a 120 keV/75 mA beam, of which the effective brilliance is about 500 kW mm−2 on the supposition of a two-dimensional Gaussian distribution. High-power tests have begun using a high-voltage 120 kV/75 mA power supply for the X-ray generator instead of 60 kV/100 mA. The beam focus size on the target will be verified in the experiments.

Many indicators/indices provide information on whether the 2010 biodiversity target of reducing declines in biodiversity have been achieved. The strengths and limitations of the various measures used to assess the success of such measures are now being discussed. Biodiversity dynamics are often evaluated by a single biological population metric, such as the abundance of each species. Here we examined tree population dynamics of 52 families (192 species) at 11 research sites (three vegetation zones) of Japanese old-growth forests using two population metrics: number of stems and basal area. We calculated indices that track the rate of change in all species of tree by taking the geometric mean of changes in population metrics between the 1990s and the 2000s at the national level and at the levels of the vegetation zone and family. We specifically focused on whether indices based on these two metrics behaved similarly. The indices showed that (1) the number of stems declined, whereas basal area did not change at the national level and (2) the degree of change in the indices varied by vegetation zone and family. These results suggest that Japanese old-growth forests have not degraded and may even be developing in some vegetation zones, and indicate that the use of a single population metric (or indicator/index) may be insufficient to precisely understand the state of biodiversity. It is therefore important to incorporate more metrics into monitoring schemes to overcome the risk of misunderstanding or misrepresenting biodiversity dynamics.

We report here a quite rare case of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) with isolated tumor cells in the sentinel lymph node in a 17-year-old adolescent girl whose mother also had advanced breast cancer. Findings included an elastic mass in the right breast accompanied by serous nipple discharge. DCIS of the breast was diagnosed following core needle biopsy. Although no invasive focus was clearly observed in the mastectomy sample, isolated tumor cells were found in the sentinel lymph node. Although the family refused genetic testing, a hereditary abnormality may have played a role in the carcinogenesis in this case.

The paper reports the vibration characteristics assessment of grid panels which were furnished in the main structure of 50kg-class micro-satellite ``SOHLA-1''. Three different types of grid panels with dimensions of 141.1 × 423.0 × 10.0mm, triangle-grid-type panel, rectangle-grid-type panel and frame-type panel, were investigated to find their dynamics through impulse test. Vibration characteristics were also simulated by a FEM computer soft NASTRAN. Application of flame-retardant type magnesium alloy to the panel was made to confirm the structural effectiveness of magnesium alloy panel.

The parametric X-ray radiation (PXR) generator system at Laboratory for Electron Beam Research and Application (LEBRA) in Nihon University is a monochromatic and coherent X-ray source with horizontal wavelength dispersion. The energy definition of the X-rays, which depends on the horizontal size of the incident electron beam on the generator target crystal, has been investigated experimentally by measuring the X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra on Cu and CuO associated with conventional X-ray absorption imaging technique. The result demonstrated the controllability of the spectrum resolution of XANES by adjusting of the horizontal electron beam size on the target crystal. The XANES spectra were obtained with energy resolution of several eV at the narrowest case, which is in qualitative agreement with the energy definition of the PXR X-rays evaluated from geometrical consideration. The result also suggested that the wavelength dispersive X-ray absorption fine structure measurement associated with imaging technique is one of the promising applications of PXR.

Advanced applications of parametric X-ray radiation (PXR) such as energy-dispersive X-ray absorption fine structure (DXAFS) analysis and phase-contrast imaging have been developed at the Laboratory for Electron Beam Research and Application (LEBRA) of Nihon University. To improve the electron beam quality and geometrical stability of the target crystal, the cooling-water system for the linac and the PXR target was replaced with a new one capable of more precise control. As a result, the reliability of the experimental data in PXR applications, especially in X-ray imaging, has improved. The effect of the electron beam focusing on the target crystal was also investigated. The results of X-ray imaging with a long propagation distance and measurement of the time-structure of the PXR intensity suggest that the correlation between the electron beam profile and the X-ray coherence is rather complicated. It is possible that incident electrons cause some deformation of the target crystal, becoming the dominant factor restricting the quality of intense PXR.

Aim: To review of the difference in the health condition between 8020 achievers and 8020 non-achievers covering 25 papers which were published mainly in Japan. Background: A campaign targeting the elderly to retain at least 20 teeth by the time they reach the age of 80 years (8020) has been in place since 1991 in Japan. Results: The percentage of 8020 achievers increased from 10.9% in 1993, 15.3% in 1999 and 24.1% in 2005. The 8020 achievers had a tendency towards a strict upbringing and were not fond of sweets in their childhood. Physical indices such as height, weight, BMI score, bone mineral density, balance ability, grip strength, and exercise function in the 8020 achievers were better than the 8020 non-achievers. A close inverse relationship between the number of teeth and heart rate was recognised. The food intake survey showed that 8020 achievers ate many kinds of food. However, these foods were those with less kilocalories and lower levels of carbohydrate. The 8020 achievers had good activity in daily life (ADL) level, were satisfied with life, and had a higher cumulative survival rate. Oral health conditions including periodontal condition, masticatory ability, occlusal force, occlusal and maxillofacial forms in the 8020 achievers were better than the 8020 non-achievers.
