Small-sized, low-cost, and high-sensitivity sensors are required for pressure-sensing applications because of their critical role in consumer electronics, automotive applications, and industrial environments. Thus, micro/nanoscale pressure sensors based on micro/nanofabrication and micro/nanoelectromechanical system technologies have emerged as a promising class of pressure sensors on account of their remarkable miniaturization and performance. These sensors have recently been developed to feature multifunctionality and applicability to novel scenarios, such as smart wearable devices and health monitoring systems. In this review, we summarize the major sensing principles used in micro/nanoscale pressure sensors and discuss recent progress in the development of four major categories of these sensors, namely, novel material-based, flexible, implantable, and self-powered pressure sensors. Smartphone-enabled microfluidic chemiluminescence immunoassay is a promising portable system for point-of-care (POC) biosensing applications. However, due to the rather faint emitted light in such a limited sample volume, it is still difficult to reach the clinically accepted range when the smartphone serves as a standalone detector. Besides, the multiple separation and washing steps during sample preparation hinder the immunoassay's applications for POC usage. Herein, we proposed a novel acoustic streaming tweezers-enabled microfluidic immunoassay, where the probe particles' purification, reaction, and sensing were simply achieved on the same chip at continuous-flow conditions. The dedicatedly designed high-speed microscale vortexes not only enable dynamic trapping and washing of the probe particles on-demand but also enhance the capture efficiency of the heterogeneous particle-based immunoassay through active mixing during trapping. The enriched probe particles and enhanced biomarker capture capability increase the local chemiluminescent light intensity and enable direct capture of the immunobinding signal by a regular smartphone camera. The system was tested for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) sensing both in buffer and serum, where a limit of detection of 0.2 ng/mL and a large dynamic response range from 0.3 to 10 ng/mL using only 10 μL of sample were achieved in a total assay time of less than 15 min. With the advantages of on-chip integration of sample preparation and detection and high sensing performance, the developed POC platform could be applied for many on-site diagnosis applications.

This paper describes the detection and discrimination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using an e-nose system based on a multiparameter virtual sensor array (VSA), which consists of a single-chip temperature-compensated film bulk acoustic wave resonator (TC-FBAR) coated with 20-bilayer self-assembled poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)/poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) thin films. The high-frequency and microscale FBAR multiparameter VSA was realized by temperature modulation, which can greatly reduce the cost and complexity compared to those of a traditional e-nose system and can allow it to operate at different temperatures. The discrimination effect depends on the synergy of temperature modulation and the sensing material. For proof-of-concept validation purposes, the TC-FBAR was exposed to six different VOC vapors at six different gas partial pressures by real-time VOC static detection and dynamic detection. The resulting frequency shifts and impedance responses were measured at different temperatures and evaluated using principal component analysis and linear discriminant analysis, which revealed that all analytes can be distinguished and classified with more than 97% accuracy. To the best of our knowledge, this report is the first on an FBAR multiparameter VSA based on temperature modulation, and the proposed novel VSA shows great potential as a compact and promising e-nose system integrated in commercial electronic products.

The health effects of suspended particulate matter (PM) in the air are well documented; however, there is a lack of convenient tools to recognize and quantify PM onsite. Here, we design and fabricate a portable PM analysis system to realize onsite aerosol particle analysis. The system contains a micromachined virtual impactor (VI), a thermophoretic deposition chip, and a smartphone-based portable imaging device. The silicon dioxide (SiO2) particles and polystyrene sphere (PLS) particles are used to verify the micro-sized VI with an accurate cut-off diameter of 2 μm (PM2). After separation, the fine particles are thermally deposited on a replaceable film. Then, a smartphone connected with a hand-held optical microscope is applied to directly image and analyze the deposited particles with the assistance of a self-developed Android application; thus, the size and distribution of the particles can be acquired immediately. The PM analysis device is successfully applied to analyze the particle content from a smoking cigarette as a real complex sample demonstration. Considering the compact integration of the particle separation, collection, detection, and analysis components, the reported PM analysis device is promising for point-of-need outdoor and indoor air quality monitoring.

BACKGROUND In China, hypertension prevalence is high and increasing while the control rate is low, especially in rural areas. Traditionally, village doctors play an important role in infectious disease control and delivering essential health services to rural residents. We aim to test the effectiveness of a village doctor-led multifaceted intervention compared with usual care on blood pressure (BP) control and cardiovascular disease (CVD) among rural residents with hypertension in China. METHODS In the China Rural Hypertension Control Project (CRHCP), a cluster randomized trial, 163 villages were randomly assigned to the village doctor-led intervention and 163 villages to control. A total of 33,995 individuals aged ≥40 years with an untreated BP ≥140/90 mm Hg or treated BP ≥130/80 mm Hg or with an untreated BP ≥130/80 mm Hg and a history of clinical CVD were recruited into the study. The village doctor-led multifaceted intervention is designed to overcome barriers at the healthcare system, provider, patient, and community levels. Village doctors receive training on standard BP measurement, protocol-based hypertension treatment, and health coaching. They also receive technical support and supervision from hypertension specialists/primary care physicians and performance-based financial incentives. Study participants receive health coaching on home BP monitoring, lifestyle changes, and adherence to medications. The primary outcome is BP control ( CONCLUSIONS The CRHCP will provide critically important data on the effectiveness, implementation, and sustainability of a hypertension control strategy in rural China for reducing the BP-related CVD burden. Microwave sensors based on microstrip antennas are promising as wearable devices because of their flexibility and wireless communication compatibility. However, their sensitivity is limited due to the reduced sensor size and the potential of biochemical monitoring needs to be explored. In this work, we present a new concept to enhance the microwave signals using nanostrip-based metamaterials. The introduction of the nanostrip structures was achieved by theory and simulations. Experiments prove their enhancement of the electric field and sensing response in the characteristic gigahertz (GHz) wave band. Ordered nanostrips were fabricated on a plastic substrate through a simple nanoscale printing approach. Glucose oxidase is directly doped into the nanostrips, which enables a flexible wearable enzymatic biosensor for glucose sensing. Sensing experiments demonstrated that the nanostrip biosensor gives excellent performance for glucose detection, including high sensitivity, fast response, low detection limit, high affinity, and low power consumption. The applicability of the nanostrip-based sensor as a wearable epidermal device for real-time noninvasive monitoring of glucose in sweat is verified as well.

This paper describes the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using an e-nose system based on a virtual sensor array (VSA). The VSA was realized by seven different resonant modes of a single piezotransduced silicon bulk acoustic wave resonator (PSBAR) which can greatly reduce the complexity of a conventional e-nose system. The PSBAR was designed and fabricated using standard CMOS compatible process. The resonant modes of the PSBAR and its capability of VOCs discrimination were theoretically explored through finite element analysis. The discrimination effect was enhanced by the non-uniform adsorption of gas molecules on the top, side and bottom regions of the resonator. Score plots and radar fingerprints obtained respectively from principal component analysis (PCA) and fitted coefficient of adsorption isotherms for each VOC compose sufficient information to successfully discriminate different VOCs. The proposed novel VSA shows great potential as a compact and promising e-nose system.

Background/Aims: Many clinical and experimental studies have shown that treatment with statins could prevent myocardial hypertrophy and remodeling induced by hypertension and myocardial infarction. But the molecular mechanism was not clear. We aimed to investigate the beneficial effects of atorvastatin on hypertension-induced myocardial hypertrophy and remodeling in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) with the hope of revealing other potential mechanisms or target pathways to interpret the pleiotropic effects of atorvastatin on myocardial hypertrophy. Methods: The male and age-matched animals were randomly divided into three groups: control group (8 WKY), SHR (8 rats) and intervention group (8 SHR). The SHR in intervention group were administered by oral gavage with atorvastatin (suspension in distilled water, 10 mg/Kg once a day) for 6 weeks, and the other two groups were administered by gavage with equal quantity distilled water. Blood pressure of rats was measured every weeks using a standard tail cuff sphygmomanometer. Left ventricular (LV) dimensions were measured from short-axis views of LV under M-mode tracings using Doppler echocardiograph. Cardiomyocyte apoptosis was assessed by the TUNEL assay. The protein expression of C/EBPβ, PGC-1α and UCP3 were detected by immunohistochemistry or Western blot analysis. Results: At the age of 16 weeks, the mean arterial pressure of rats in three groups were 103.6±6.1, 151.8±12.5 and 159.1±6.2 mmHg respectively, and there wasn’t statistically significant difference between the SHR and intervention groups. Staining with Masson’s trichrome demonstrated that the increased interstitial fibrosis of LV and ventricular remodeling in the SHR group were attenuated by atorvastatin treatment. Echocardiography examination exhibited that SHR with atorvastatin treatment showed an LV wall thickness that was obviously lower than that of water-treated SHR. In hypertrophic myocardium, accompanied by increasing C/EBPβ expression and the percentage of TUNEL-positive cells, the expression of Bcl-2/Bax ratio, PGC-1α and UCP3 were reduced, all of which could be abrogated by treatment with atorvastatin for 6 weeks. Conclusion: This study further confirmed that atorvastatin could attenuate myocardial hypertrophy and remodeling in SHR by inhibiting apoptosis and reversing changes in mitochondrial metabolism. The C/EBPβ/PGC-1α/UCP3 signaling pathway might also be important for elucidating the beneficial pleiotropic effects of atorvastatin on myocardial hypertrophy.

Background Various anthropometric indices can be used to estimate obesity, and it is important to determine which one is the best in predicting the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and to define the optimal cut-off point for the best index. Methods This cross-sectional study investigated a consecutive sample of 11,247 adults, who had lived in rural areas of China and were older than 35 years of age. Eight obesity indices, including the body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), abdominal volume index (AVI), body adiposity index (BAI), body roundness index (BRI) and a body shape index (ABSI) were investigated. The risk of CHD was evaluated by the 10-year coronary event risk (Framingham risk score). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were used to evaluate the predictive ability of the obesity indices for CHD risk. Results Of the whole population, 3636 (32.32%) participants had a risk score higher than 10%. Those who suffered medium or high CHD risk were more likely to have higher mean anthropometric indices, except for BMI in males. In the multivariate-adjusted logistic regression, all these anthropometric measurements were statistically associated with CHD risk in males. After adjusting for all the possible confounders, these anthropometric measurements, except for ABSI, remained as independent indicators of CHD risk in females. According to the ROC analyses, ABSI provided the largest area under the curve (AUC) value in males, and BMI showed the lowest AUC value, with AUC varying from 0.52 to 0.60. WHtR and BRI provided the largest AUC value in female, and similarly, BMI showed the lowest AUC value, with AUC varying from 0.59 to 0.70. The optimal cut-off values were as follows: WHtR (females: 0.54), BRI (females: 4.21), and ABSI (males: 0.078). Conclusions ABSI was the best anthropometric index for estimating CHD risk in males, and WHtR and BRI were the best indicators in females. Males should maintain an ABSI of less than 0.078, and females should maintain a WHtR of less than 0.54 or a BRI of less than 4.21. Cardiometabolic index (CMI) has been recognized as a novel and practical marker for the assessment of cardiometabolic risk as it is independently related to diabetes and atherosclerotic progression. This study tested the hypothesis that CMI represents a risk of ischemic stroke in a general population of rural China.From July 2012 to August 2013, we examined data from a large cross-sectional study of 11,345 participants (mean age 53.8 years; 60.8% females) who underwent biochemical determinations and anthropometric measurements in rural areas of northeast China. Ischemic stroke was documented as a history of cerebrovascular events and verified by medical record review.The prevalence of ischemic stroke was given to 3.1% of females and 3.2% of males. The cardio-metabolic profile was notably more adverse in ischemic stroke groups, irrespective of gender. A dose-response manner was detected for the prevalence of ischemic stroke, exhibiting a significant increase from the lowest to the highest quartiles of CMI (1.2% to 6.4% in females, P for trend0.001; 2.3% to 4.3% in males, P for trend = 0.017). In multivariable analysis, for every 1 SD increment in CMI, the probability of ischemic stroke increased by 18% in females and 14% in males, respectively. The odds ratios for ischemic stroke comparing the top versus bottom quartiles of CMI were 2.047 (95%CI: 1.168-3.587) for females and 1.722 (95%CI: 1.019-2.910) for males. According to the area under receiver operating characteristic (AUC), the discrimination power of CMI in predicting ischemic stroke was relatively higher for females (AUC: 0.685) than males (AUC: 0.573).The strong and independent association of CMI with ischemic stroke in females, in comparison with the much lesser degree in males, provides further insight to better stratify by sex in investigations of ischemic stroke and solidly corroborates the potential role of ischemic stroke prevention targeted at CMI.

On-chip integrating several functional components for developing integrated lab-on-a-chip microsystem remains as a challenge. In this work, by employing multiple microelectromechanical resonators both as actuators and sensors, on-chip heating, mixing and chemical reaction monitoring are successfully demonstrated. Mechanism studies using COMSOL simulations indicate that the local heating and mixing are induced by the acoustic wave attenuation during its transmission in liquid. On-line chemical reaction monitoring is realized by viscosity sensing using the same resonator through impedance analysis. Classic Diels-Alder reaction in a single droplet was performed to verify the feasibility of using such microsystem for mixing, heating and online reaction monitoring at microscale.

In this study, we have developed a new type of highly sensitive pressure sensor based on a microelectro mechanical system (MEMS) aluminum nitride (AlN) contour-mode resonator (CMR), which is experimentally verified by measuring pressure changes within the range of 0 kPa to 200 kPa. The CMR-based pressure sensor, offering enhanced linearity, achieves an improved sensitivity of 16.51 Hz/hPa, making it suitable for performing quantitative in-line monitoring of gaseous species production reactions, e.g. in real time detection of a hydrogen peroxide decomposition reaction.

Ambient suspended particulate matter (PM) (primarily with particle diameter 2.5 µm or less, i.e., PM2.5) can adversely affect ecosystems and human health. Currently, optical particle sensors based on light scattering dominate the portable PM sensing market. However, the light scattering method has poor adaptability to different-sized PM and adverse environmental conditions. Here, we design and develop a portable PM sensing microsystem that consists of a micromachined virtual impactor (VI) for particle separation, a thermophoretic deposition chip for particle collection, and an extended-gate field-effect transistor (FET) for particle analysis. This system can realize on-site separation, collection, and analysis of aerosol particles without being influenced by environmental factors. In this study, the design of the VI is thoroughly analyzed by numerical simulation, and mixtures of different-sized silicon dioxide (SiO2) particles are used in an experimental verification of the performance of the VI and FET. Considering the low cost and compact design of the whole system, the proposed PM analysis microsystem has potential for PM detection under a wide range of conditions, such as heavily polluted industrial environments and for point-of-need outdoor and indoor air quality monitoring.

Summary When high-speed train passing through tunnel, aerodynamic effect will be created, which may arise micro-pressure wave at tunnel exit and affect the surrounding environment around tunnel. Setting hood at tunnel entrance is effective and economical method. Using numeral simulation method, two kinds of hood mechanics character under deadweight and aerodynamic load were analysed. The stress concentration field on the hood and the magnitude of the stress caused by aerodynamic loading was defined. By comparing the aerodynamic loading method of pseudo-static and dynamic real-time, the necessity for doing real-time dynamic analysis is shown. The recommended kind of hood also was point out.

Background Despite current interest in the unfavorable impact of nontraditional lipid profiles on cardiovascular disease, information regarding its relations to abnormal left ventricular (LV) geometry has not been systemically elucidated. This study sought to understand predictive implication of nontraditional lipid profiles in specific LV geometric patterns in the general population of rural China. Methods Analyses were based upon a cross-sectional study of 10,756 participants (mean age 53.8 years; 54.0% females) who underwent assessment of biochemical, anthropometric, and blood pressure variables in rural areas of China. In hybrid microgrid with AC/DC distributed generation integration, the bidirectional converters take charge of the power balance among AC subgrid and DC subgrid. For the droop-controlled distributed generations both in the two subgrids, the bidirectional converters should manage these two different kinds of power droop characteristic. In this paper, the two kinds droop control are described as the droop characteristic of AC bus and DC bus of the bidirectional AC/DC converters. Then a novel active power control strategy for the converters based on the bidirectional droop characteristic is proposed to realize the power balance and independent sharing. Along with the droop control in both AC and DC subgrid, the power balance and independent sharing in the hybrid microgrid can be realized and the plug-and-play feature of the distributed generations is ensured. Small signal modeling and analysis of the bidirectional converter are conducted to evaluate the characteristics of the proposed control with different parameters. Simulation results based on PSCAD/EMTDC show the validity and efficiency of the proposed control strategy.

In this paper, we develop a novel dual-mode gas sensor system which comprises a silicon nanoribbon field effect transistor (Si-NR FET) and a film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR). We investigate their sensing characteristics using polar and nonpolar organic compounds, and demonstrate that polarity has a significant effect on the response of the Si-NR FET sensor, and only a minor effect on the FBAR sensor. In this dual-mode system, qualitative discrimination can be achieved by analyzing polarity with the Si-NR FET and quantitative concentration information can be obtained using a polymer-coated FBAR with a detection limit at the ppm level. The complementary performance of the sensing elements provides higher analytical efficiency. Additionally, a dual mixture of two types of freons (CFC-113 and HCFC-141b) is further analyzed with the dual-mode gas sensor. Owing to the small size and complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS)-compatibility of the system, the dual-mode gas sensor shows potential as a portable integrated sensing system for the analysis of gas mixtures in the future.

This paper reported a miniaturized sensitive gravimetric gas sensor based on film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR). The sensitivity of the FBAR gas sensor was enhanced 10∼20 times after coating with nanomaterials (metal organic frameworks (MOFs)). A facile coating process of MOFs on FBARs was disclosed for the first time. Furthermore, utilizing FBAR sensors as detectors was firstly demonstrated in a prototype of chromatographic instrument by facile hyphenation of FBAR with commercial separation column.

Previous studies found that hypertension and high homocysteine (HHcy) exhibited a synergistic effect on the risk of cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of hypertension accompanied by HHcy and its risk factors in the rural areas of northeast China. This study was conducted using a stratified cluster random sampling method, and included 6529 subjects with complete data. Demographic characteristics were obtained from a questionnaire. Blood pressure and anthropometric indices were measured, and serum indices were analyzed. Hypertension accompanied by HHcy was defined as hypertension plus HHcy [homocysteine (Hcy) > 10 µmol/L]. The mean concentration of Hcy was 17.29 μmol/L in the general population. The prevalence of hypertension accompanied by HHcy was so high that it reached 45.1% of our study population and accounted for 86.8% of the total participants with hypertension. Multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that the modifiable risk factors of hypertension accompanied by HHcy included obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and inactive physical activities. We found that the mean level of Hcy, and the prevalences of HHcy and hypertension accompanied by HHcy were very high among the rural population of northeast China. Obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and inactive physical activities were modifiable risk factors of hypertension accompanied by HHcy.

We aimed to compare the relative strength of the association between anthropometric obesity indices and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Another objective was to examine whether the visceral adiposity index (VAI) and lipid accumulation product index (LAPI) can identify CKD in the rural population of China. There were 5168 males and 6024 females involved in this cross-sectional study, and 237 participants (2.12%) suffered from CKD. Obesity indices included body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), VAI and LAPI. VAI and LAPI were calculated with triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), BMI and WC. VAI = [WC/39.68 + (1.88 × BMI)] × (TG /1.03) × (1.31/ HDL) for males; VAI = [WC/36.58 + (1.89 × BMI)] × (TG/0.81) × (1.52/HDL) for females. LAPI = (WC-65) × TG for males, LAPI = (WC-58) × TG for females. CKD was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of less than 60 mL/min per 1.73 m2. The prevalence of CKD increased across quartiles for WHtR, VAI and LAPI. A multivariate logistic regression analysis of the presence of CKD for the highest quartile vs. the lowest quartile of each anthropometric measure showed that the VAI was the best predictor of CKD in females (OR: 4.21, 95% CI: 2.09–8.47, p < 0.001). VAI showed the highest AUC for CKD (AUC: 0.68, 95% CI: 0.65–0.72) and LAPI came second (AUC: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.61–0.70) in females compared with BMI (both p-values < 0.001). However, compared with the traditional index of the BMI, the anthropometric measures VAI, LAPI, WC, and WHtR had no statistically significant capacity to predict CKD in males. Our results showed that both VAI and LAPI were significantly associated with CKD in the rural population of northeast China. Furthermore, VAI and LAPI were superior to BMI, WC and WHtR for predicting CKD only in females.

Electronic nose (e-nose) is a useful tool for gas detection in environment monitoring, food industry and medical diagnosing. It utilizes sensor arrays to generate recognition pattern in identifying odor or specific analyte. Here a novel multimode e-nose is demonstrated for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by integrating both gravimetric-sensitive sensor and electric-sensitive sensor. In this system, film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) is used to gain mass related information and silicon nanowire field effect transistor (Si-NW FET) to collect electrical related information for the analytes. The electronic nose is applied to discriminate the ethanol-hexane mixture and the concentration of each gas can be successfully calculated by simple math without using complex mathematic model. The hybrid e-nose system shows potential for the analysis of VOC mixture in the future.

Aimed at the comprehensibility, reusability and maintainability, the thesis presents the reverse model recovery for the legacy code developed by TTCN-3. It can also help tester and maintainers to verify the test implement, etc. The thesis introduces the discovery of invocation model and dynamic test configuration model based on the reverse model discovery system framework.

Little is known about stroke with different obesity phenotype as determined using the Adult Treatment Panel-III criteria with metabolic health or not. This study aimed to investigate the effects of metabolically healthy and unhealthy obesity on ischemic stroke in a general population. A total of 11,150 adults were examined using a multi-stage cluster sampling method to select a representative sample of individuals 35 years or older. Ischemic stroke was defined as history of a cerebrovascular event, as documented by doctors via either cranial CT or MR scan within the past 2 years. All subjects were categorized as having metabolically healthy non-obesity (MHNO), metabolically unhealthy non-obesity (MUNO), metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) or metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO) using the Adult Treatment Panel-III criteria. Stratified analysis were done based on different body mass index group. This study aimed to comprehensively compare the general characteristics, lifestyles, serum parameters, ultrasonic cardiogram (UCG) parameters, depression, quality of life, and various comorbidities between empty nest and non-empty nest elderly among rural populations in northeast China. This analysis was based on our previous study which was conducted from January 2012 to August 2013, using a multistage, stratified, random cluster sampling scheme. The final analyzed sample consisted of 3208 participants aged no less than 60 years, which was further classified into three groups: non-empty nest group, empty nest group (living as a couple), and empty nest group (living alone). More than half of the participants were empty nest elderly (60.5%). There were no significant statistical differences for serum parameters, UCG parameters, lifestyles, dietary pattern, and scores of Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and World Health Organization Quality of Life questionnaire, abbreviated version (WHOQOL-BREF) among the three groups. Empty nest elderly showed no more risk for comorbidities such as general obesity, abdominal obesity, hyperuricemia, hyperhomocysteinemia, diabetes, dyslipidemia, left atrial enlargement (LAE), and stroke. Our study indicated that empty nest elderly showed no more risk for depression, low quality of life and comorbidities such as general obesity, abdominal obesity, hyperuricemia, hyperhomocysteinemia, diabetes, dyslipidemia, LAE, and stroke among rural populations in northeast China.

Background: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) has attracted increasing attention worldwide. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of HFpEF and analyze its correlates in a sample of residents of northeast China; Methods: A population-based study of 2230 participants ≥35 years old was conducted in rural areas of Liaoning Province from January 2012 through August 2013. Information about lifestyle and other potential risk factors was obtained. HFpEF was diagnosed according to the recommendations of European Society of Cardiology; Results: The overall prevalence of HFpEF was 3.5% (1.8% in men and 4.9% in women). The prevalence of HFpEF increased with age in both genders and was greater in women than in men for every age group. Multivariable logistic regression analysis found that female gender (OR, 3.575; 95% CI, 1.761–7.256), hypertension (OR, 3.711; 95% CI, 2.064–6.674), and history of heart disease (2.086; 95% CI, 1.243–3.498) were associated factors for prevalent HFpEF; Conclusions: In a general population from rural northeast China, we found that female gender, hypertension, and history of heart disease were risk factors for prevalent HFpEF.

Background: although alcohol abuse is known to increase serum uric acid, the relation between moderate drinking and uric acid have remained poorly understood. We performed this study to evaluate whether different alcohol consumption level has different effects on the risk of hyperuricemia based on a rural general population. Method: multi-stage cluster sampling method was used to select a representative sample of individuals aged 35 years or older. Participants were asked to provide information about their alcohol consumption. Data regarding the demographic and lifestyle characteristics and the blood biochemical indexes of these participants were collected by well-trained personnel. Results: in total, 11,039 participants aged 35 years or older were included (4997 men and 6042 women). The prevalence of hyperuricemia in the different male alcohol consumption groups was 11.9% in non-drinkers, 12.6% in moderate drinkers, and 16.3% in heavy drinkers (p < 0.001). In females, the rates were 6.3% in non-drinkers, 8.1% in moderate drinkers, and 6.6% for heavy drinkers (p = 0.818). In males, multivariate logistic regression analyses shows heavy drinkers had an approximately 1.7-fold higher risk of hyperuricemia (OR: 1.657, 95% CI: 1.368 to 2.007, p < 0.001) than non-drinkers; moderate drinkers did not experience a significant increase in risk (OR: 1.232, 95% CI: 0.951 to 1.596, p = 0.114)). Multivariate logistic regression analyses of females showed that, compared with non-drinkers, neither moderate nor heavy drinkers had a significantly increased risk of hyperuricemia (OR: 1.565, 95% CI: 0.521 to 4.695, p = 0.425 for heavy drinkers; OR: 0.897, 95% CI: 0.117 to 6.855, p = 0.916 for moderate drinkers). Conclusions: heavy alcohol consumption increased the risk of hyperuricemia for males but not for females. Among both males and females, moderate alcohol consumption did not increase the risk of hyperuricemia.

Background: In 2010, the American Heart Association developed a new definition of ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) based on seven cardiovascular health metrics. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between modified ideal CVH metrics and the risk of stroke in the rural population of Northeast China. Methods: We included 11,417 adults from the rural population in Northeast China and collected all the information, including the baseline characteristics, history of stroke, and the seven ideal CVH metrics. Results: Our results showed that the presence of stroke was associated with high body mass index (BMI), poor diet score (salt intake), high total cholesterol (TC), high blood pressure (BP), and high fasting plasma glucose (FPG). The prevalence of stroke increased as the number of ideal CVH metrics decreased, and peaked to 13.1% among those with only one ideal CVH metric. Participants with only one ideal CVH had a 4.40-fold increased susceptibility of stroke than those with all seven ideal health metrics. Conclusion: This study revealed that people with a better CVH status had a lower prevalence of stroke and the susceptibility of stroke increased with the decreasing of the number of ideal CVH metrics.

Background The American Heart Association (AHA) introduced definitions of "ideal," "intermediate," and "poor" cardiovascular health (CVH) based on seven cardiovascular health metrics (smoking, body mass index, physical activity, diet score, total cholesterol, blood pressure, and fasting glucose). This study used this construct to assess the prevalence and metric distribution of CVH in a rural population with traditional lifestyles and investigate the relationship of CVH with socio-demographic characteristics of participants. Methods From January 2012 to August 2013, a representative sample of 11,113 adults (mean age 53.8±10.6 years; 53.8% women) was enrolled from a rural population in Northeast China using a multi-stage, stratified random cluster-sampling scheme. Results According to the adjusted AHA criteria for CVH health metrics, there was 0.1% prevalence of ideal CVH (all seven health metrics at ideal levels), 11.7% of intermediate CVH (at least one health metric at intermediate level, but no poor health metrics), and 88.2% of poor CVH (at least one of seven health metrics at poor level). Women and young/middle-aged adults were more likely to have all of the ideal CVH metrics, behaviours, factors and CVH status. Conclusions Our study showed extremely low (0.1%) prevalence of ideal CVH in the rural population of northeast China. The poor CVH status, particularly among men and older individuals, underscores the need for urgent action on modifiable risk factors, especially blood pressure and smoking.

Objective The first objective was to examine whether A Body Shape Index (ABSI) and Body Roundness Index (BRI) can identify hyperuricemia in rural China. The second aim was to compare the relative strength of association between anthropometric indices and hyperuricemia. Methods A total of 11,345 participants were involved in this cross-sectional study. Obesity measurements included BMI, WC, WHtR, ABSI and BRI. According to the statistical distribution of serum uric acid (SUA), we split our study population in sex-specific tertiles of SUA. Results After adjusting for confounding variables, BRI (linear regression: 0.170; AUC: 0.641; OR: 1.459) showed more powerful predictive ability for hyperuricemia than BMI (linear regression: 0.151; AUC: 0.630; OR: 1.108), while having a similar predictive power for hyperuricemia as WHtR (linear regression: 0.191; AUC: 0.656; OR: 1.067) and WC (linear regression: 0.209; AUC: 0.658; OR: 1.047) in the female group, but not in the male group. However, ABSI (A) (linear regression: 0.089 for women, 0.121 for men; AUC: 0.589 for women, 0.578 for men; OR: 1.027 for women, 1.034 for men) and ABSI (B) (linear regression: 0.118 for women, 0.121 for men; AUC: 0.607 for women, 0.578 for men; OR: 1.049 for women, 1.034 for men) had the lowest predictive power for hyperuricemia in both sex categories. Conclusions ABSI, BRI, BMI, WC and WHtR were all significantly associated with hyperuricemia in both sexes. In addition, BRI rather than ABSI showed a superior predictive ability for identifying hyperuricemia than BMI in female and similar capabilities as those of WC and WHtR in the female, but not in the male gender.

Background Recently, two new anthropometric indices, the A Body Shape Index (ABSI) and Body Roundness Index (BRI) have been developed as possible improved alternatives to body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC). The main research aim is to assess the capacity of the ABSI and BRI to identify subjects with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and the secondary aim is to determine whether ABSI and / or BRI is superior to BMI, WC, and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). Methods and Results This cross-sectional study was conducted among the rural population in northeast China and finally included 10,907 participants. Pearson rank test showed that BRI showed the highest correlation coefficient for LVH. Body Roundness Index had the highest AUCs for eccentric and concentric LVH (AUC: 0.74, 95% CI: 0.72-0.75; AUC: 0.67, 95% CI: 0.64-0.70, respectively). A multivariate logistic regression analysis also showed that BRI was the best predictor of eccentric and concentric LVH (OR: 5.11, 95% CI: 3.62-7.22; OR: 2.48, 95% CI: 1.40-4.40, respectively). In the five anthropometric indices, only BRI had predictive ability for concentric LVH. Conclusions We have shown that BRI, not ABSI was superior measure compared to BMI, WC and WHtR for determining the presence of LVH, especially for eccentric LVH.

The prevalence of DM increased across quartiles for ABSI, BMI, BRI, WC and WHtR. In this work, a new method to tune the resonant frequency of microfabricated resonator using molecular layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly approach is demonstrated. By simply controlling the polymer concentration and the number of layers deposited, precisely tuning the frequency of microfabricated resonators is realized. Due to its selective deposition through specific molecular recognitions, such technique avoids the high-cost and complex steps of conventional semiconductor fabrications and is able to tune individual diced device. Briefly, film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) is used to demonstrate the tuning process and two types of LbL deposition methods are compared. The film thickness and morphology have been characterized by UV-vis reflection spectra, ellipsometer and AFM. As a result, the maximum resonant frequency shift of FBAR reaches more than 20 MHz, meaning 1.4% tunability at least. The minimum frequency shift is nearly 10 kHZ per bilayer, indicating 7 ppm tuning resolution. Pressure cooker test (PCT) is performed to evaluate the reliability of LbL coated FBAR. Furthermore, applications for wireless broadband communication and chemical sensors of LbL coated FBAR have been demonstrated.

In 2010, the American Heart Association (AHA) published a new concept "ideal cardiovascular health" (CVH), which consisted of 4 behaviors (smoking, body mass index [BMI], physical activity, and diet score) and 3 health factors (total cholesterol [TC], blood pressure [BP], and fasting plasma glucose [FPG]). This study was aimed to investigate the association between CVH with left ventricle hypertrophy (LVH) in a rural general population.From January 2012 to August 2013, we conducted this cross-sectional study using a multi-stage cluster sampling method. A representative sample of individuals who were at 35 years or older was selected. All the 7 CVH metrics were estimated for ideal, intermediate, and poor levels. LVH was accessed by echocardiography and classified into concentric remodeling, concentric LVH, and eccentric LVH. The association between CVH and LVH was determined.The final data were obtained from 10,684 adults (5497 men and 5187 women) in the rural areas of northeast China. Overall, the prevalence rates of concentric remodeling, concentric LVH, and eccentric LVH were 5.1%, 4.9%, and 12.8%, respectively. The prevalence of concentric/eccentric LVH was inversely related to the numbers of ideal CVH metrics. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that only poor BP was associated with concentric remodeling among the 7 CVH metrics; poor BP was highly associated with concentric LVH (OR: 8.49; 95% CI: 4.59-15.7); poor BMI was highly associated with eccentric LVH (OR: 5.87; 95% CI: 4.83-7.14). Compared to subjects with 5 to 7 ideal CVH metrics, subjects with 4, 3, 2, 1, and 0 ideal CVH metrics had an increased risk for both concentric and eccentric LVH in a number-dependent manner. The subjects with poor CVH status had a 5.90-fold higher risk of developing concentric LVH and a 3.24-fold higher risk of developing eccentric LVH, compared to subjects with ideal-intermediate CVH.Our study found that an inversely gradient relationship existed between the prevalence of concentric/eccentric LVH with the numbers of ideal CVH metrics. Although not all the 7 CVH metrics were associated with LVH, the components of CVH metrics carried a synergistic effect beyond the risk related to the component alone.

The ECETOC Targeted Risk Assessment (TRA) model is intended to evaluate the nature of human and environmental exposures and risks arising from the manufacture and use of chemicals and version 2 has been extensively applied to develop Chemical Safety Assessments for substances registered under Phase 1 of REACH. In order to maintain the model, ECETOC solicited suggestions from TRA users arising from their experiences gained from its use in the 2009–2011 period. TRA users identified 16 different ways in which the worker exposure predictions of the TRA might be further improved at the technical level. The suggestions can be divided into those that are capable of being incorporated into the model and those which cannot which, in turn, appear to be reflective of the wide range of technical understandings of users of Tier 1 REACH models such as the TRA. The consequence of such user heterogeneity presents challenges for model developers, particularly those models intended for inclusion in regulatory processes. Those considerations that are relevant for the revision to the worker portion of the TRA (version 3) are described, together with their potential relevance for other REACH exposure models.

We developed a wireless and passive piezoelectric resonant sensor for contimuous volatile organic compound detection. An equivalent circuit is proposed to model the sensing system, and Lamb wave resonators are adopted to demonstrate the wireless interrogation achieved by near-field inductive coupling. The wireless sensing system is employed to monitor the ethanol vapor concentration, and the sensitivity of the wireless sensor barely degrades compared to that of the wired one. Further, we simultaneously and wirelessly tracked several resonance frequencies of a monolithic sensor array, which demonstrates its potential for high-throughput and real-time point-of-care test.

Recently, 2 new anthropometric indices, the A Body Shape Index (ABSI) and Body Roundness Index (BRI), have been developed. Our study was to compare the associations between different anthropometric indices, including ABSI, BRI, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and hypertension in a rural population of northeast China.This cross-sectional study was conducted in the rural areas of northeast China from January 2012 to August 2013 using a multistage, stratified random cluster-sampling scheme. All eligible permanent residents aged ≥35 years (a total of 14,016 individuals) in each village were invited to participate in the study. A final sample size of 11,345 (5253 males and 6092 females) were included in this study.All the 5 anthropometric measures were positively correlated with hypertension. The prevalence of hypertension increased across quartiles for ABSI, BMI, BRI, WC, and WHR. Multivariable logistic regression analysis of the presence of hypertension for the highest quartile versus the lowest quartile of each anthropometric measure, showed that BRI had the largest values of ORs (OR: 3.49, 95% CI: 2.86-4.21 in men; OR: 3.06, 95% CI: 2.56-3.67 in women) and ABSI had the smallest ORs (OR: 1.30, 95% CI: 1.06-1.58 in men; OR: 1.19, 95% CI: 1.04-1.34 in women). BRI had the highest AROCs for hypertension (AROC: 0.65, 95% CI: 0.64-0.67 for men and AROC: 0.68, 95% CI: 0.67-0.70 for women), while ABSI had the lowest AROCs for hypertension (AROC: 0.60, 95% CI: 0.58-0.61 for men and AROC: 0.59, 95% CI: 0.58-0.61 for women).Our results showed that ABSI, BMI, BRI, WC, and WHR were all associated with hypertension. ABSI showed the weakest association with hypertension, while BRI showed potential for use as an alternative obesity measure in assessment of hypertension.

We aimed to determine the association of atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) with hyperuricemia (HUA) in the rural population of northeast China. This cross-sectional study was conducted in the rural areas of northeast China from January 2012 to August 2013, and the final analysis included data obtained form 5253 men and 6092 women. 1104 participants (9.7%) suffered from HUA. Spearman rank test showed that AIP was positively correlated with uric acid in both sexes (r = 0.310 for men and r = 0.347 for women, both p < 0.001). AIP was classified into three groups: the low (0.21) risk. The prevalence of HUA increased with AIP. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that, compared to the low AIP group, participants in increased AIP group had a 2.536-fold risk for HUA (2.164-fold in male and 2.960-fold in female) after adjustment for covariates. Results of receiver operating characteristic curves showed that the area under the curve (95% confidence intervals) was 0.686 (0.665–0.707) for male and 0.730 (0.706–0.755) for female. We indicated that increased AIP was associated with higher serum uric acid levels and could be identified as an independent risk factor of HUA in the rural population of northeast China.

In wireless sensor network (WSN), digital image data are transported in uncontrolled and possibly hostile environment. Thus, copyright protection has drawn much attention in behalf of the originators of the sensing data in wireless transmission. Traditional security schemes are computationally expensive, because they introduce overhead which shortens the life of the image sensors. In comparison with traditional security techniques, watermark schemes are usually light weight and do not require extensive computing and power resources. Thus they can be attractive options for wireless sensor applications. According to the feature of DCT coefficients, this paper proposes a real-time robust watermark algorithm whose coefficients are obtained through experiments. To make the watermark more robust, we embed the watermark into the low-frequency coefficients of DCT. Experimental results show that this algorithm is real-time, imperceptible and robust, thereby it can satisfy with the wireless network transmission requirements.

To investigate the mechanism and the usage of the information of pulse wave propagation and reflection in human arteries are the objects of this study. In this study, an experimental apparatus simulating human circulatory system by using silicon tubes to examine the pulse wave propagation and reflection with and without branches has been developed. We examined the effect of eight parameters, such as flow rate, tube diameter, tube thickness etc., affecting waveform, PWV (Pulse Wave Velocity) and PV loop (Pressure-Velocity Loop). Numerical analyses were also carried out, and the relation between PV Loop and local impedance was discussed. Finally, the effect of eight parameters on the PWV and PV loop were clarified. It was also found that, the PV Loop includes much information on the tube characteristics, impedance, boundary condition, tube connection and reflection condition. Therefore, the PV loop method might be promising to be used in health diagnosis systems. In addition, we found that the effects of bifurcation angle on wave propagation and reflection were so little that they can be neglected in wave calculation models.

This assessment evaluated the potential for human health effects to off site residents breathing air emissions following use of the 155 mm Propelling Charge This document present the evaluation of the potential for adverse human health effects to the off site residents breathing air emissions following the use of military firing ranges during training exercises - Study results showed no potential for health risks to the hypothetical resident from inhalation of air emissions from the 155 mm propelling charge. To conduct this study, air emissions from the 155mm charge were collected in a test chamber ( at Aberdeen Test Center, Aberdeen, MD). This information was then used in an air dispersion model to determine ambient air concentrations at a location downwind from the site where the item was activated. Modeled air concentrations were combined with exposure information to estimate the amount of substances the hypothetical resident breathes.

Self-organization of PbS into quantum dot superlattices has been demonstrated for the first time, and hexaplanar colloidal crystals 1-10 μm in size made from PbS quantum dots 3-6 nm in diameter are revealed in transmission electron microscope micrographs, and the inner structures of the superlattices can be seen by a high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The optical absorption and photoluminescence spectra have been recorded. The ordering of the superlattices is crucial for the understanding of the fundamental properties of quantum-dot arrays, as well as for their optimal utilization in optical and electronic applications.
