Solid-state fiber dye-sensitized solar cells (SS-FDSSCs) have been the subject of intensive attention and development in recent years. Although this field is only in its infancy, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one such material that has been utilized to further improve the power conversion efficiency of solar cells. In this study, MOF-integrated DSSCs were shown to have potential in the development of solar cell devices with efficiency comparable to or better than that of conventional solar cells. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of SS-FDSSCs was improved by embedding MOF-801 into a mesoporous-TiO2 (mp-TiO2) layer, which was used as a photoanode in SS-FDSSCs, which are inherently flexible. The PCE of the MOF-integrated SS-FDSSCs was 6.50%, which is comparable to that of the reference devices (4.19%). The MOF-801 enhanced SS-FDSSCs decreased the series resistance (Rs) value, resulting in effective electron extraction with improved short-circuit current density (JSC), while also increasing the shunt resistance (Rsh) value to prevent the recombination of photo-induced electrons. The result is an improved fill factor and, consequently, a higher value for the PCE.

To evaluate the impact of virtual tumor absorbed dose (vTAD) on tumor response in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated with yttrium-90 radioembolization.The institutional review board approved this retrospective single center study, which comprised 100 patients with nodular HCC who underwent yttrium-90 radioembolization between November 2015 and December 2019. The vTAD was calculated assuming that all infused microspheres were distributed only in the tumor. The ability of mean absorbed dose (mAD) and vTAD in predicting complete response were evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses.The mAD was 263.9 Gy ± 125.8, and the mean vTAD was 2005.8 Gy ± 2348.9. In terms of tumor response, 63 patients had complete response, 25 partial response, and 12 stable disease. For predicting complete response, ROC curve analyses revealed that the area under the curve (AUC) value of the vTAD was significantly higher (p0.001) than that of the mAD. Multivariate analysis revealed that Child-Pugh class A5, unilobar disease, and vTAD (952 Gy) were significant factors in predicting complete response.High vTAD (952 Gy) plays a significant role in complete response in patients with nodular HCC.

PURPOSE To determine the value of preprocedural MR imaging in genicular artery embolization (GAE) for patients with osteoarthritic knee pain. MATERIALS AND METHODS This single-center study retrospectively analyzed 28 knees in 18 patients who underwent GAE for intractable knee pain < 1 month after MR imaging. The pain experienced in each knee was evaluated on a 100-mm visual analog scale (VAS) at baseline and 1- and 3-month after GAE. "GAE responders" were defined as knees that exhibited greater than 30% reduction of VAS pain scores from baseline at both follow-up visits. Musculoskeletal radiologists evaluated MR images of the affected knee compartment regarding cartilage defects, osteophytes, subchondral cysts, bone marrow lesions (BMLs), meniscal injury, and joint effusion. The performances of Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grading and MR findings in predicting GAE responders was estimated based on receiver operating characteristic curves. RESULTS The mean VAS pain score was 84.3 mm. BML (area under the curve [AUC], 0.860; P < .001), meniscal injury (AUC, 0.811; P = .003), and KL grading (AUC, 0.898; P < .001) were significantly associated with GAE outcome. To predict GAE responders, KL grade ≤ 2 yielded a sensitivity of 87.5% and a specificity of 60.9%, BML grade ≤ 1 yielded a sensitivity of 75.0% and a specificity of 69.6%, and meniscal injury grade ≤ 2 yielded a sensitivity of 83.3% and a specificity of 72.7%. CONCLUSIONS Large BMLs and severe meniscal injuries on MR imaging, as well as high KL grades, indicated poor responses to GAE.

Perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are promising emissive materials for application in light-emitting diodes (LEDs) due to their high quantum efficiency and narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM). However, the ion bonding character of perovskite leads to their quick chemical decomposition under atmospheric moisture. Herein, we present CsPbBr3 perovskite NCs that achieved improved efficiency and stability with the addition of water during the synthesis process. The CsPbBr3 NCs synthesized with a controlled amount of water exhibited a quantum yield greater than 90%, sustained stability over 35 days and a much narrower FWHM than CsPbBr3 NCs that did not use water. Finally, water-added perovskite NC LEDs were fabricated and they showed a nearly 5-times improvement in current efficiency compared to the reference device.

Misleading advertisements can affect behavior of both consumers and prescribers and may lead to inappropriate use of medications.To analyze the complaints upheld by regulatory authorities in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia regarding pharmaceutical advertising directed at consumers.Complaints addressed between January 2014 and June 2017 were retrieved from the websites of regulatory authorities. Complaints addressed by self-regulatory bodies were not included due to the poor availability of data.Sixty complaints, 374 complaints, and 223 complaints from the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, respectively, were analyzed. In the United Kingdom, the most frequent type of violation was advertising of prescription drugs (70.5%); most of these violations involved botulinum toxin. In Canada, advertising on online media was more likely to be associated with prescription drugs than that on traditional media (P 0.001). In Australia, advertising of prescription drugs accounted for less than 10% of complaints, but all were associated with online media.In countries where direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription drugs is prohibited, regulatory authorities may need to devise further strategies to safeguard the public as this is an unresolved issue and is predicted to become more problematic with the increased use of online media.

Rationale: Vestibular paroxysmia (VP) is characterized by spontaneous, recurrent, short, paroxysmal attacks of vertigo with or without tinnitus. Patient concerns: We report a case of paroxysmal recurrent vertigo accompanying clicking tinnitus on the left side in a 61-year-old patient. He had undergone microvascular decompression to treat the left-side hemifacial spasm 6 years prior. The patient first developed vertigo attacks about 3 years after microvascular decompression, and the attacks increased in frequency over the last 4 months. Video-nystagmography revealed a background right-beating nystagmus which was reversed every 55 seconds, to left-beating nystagmus for 17 seconds. Diagnosis: Brain magnetic resonance imaging and angiography demonstrated a compression of the cisternal segment of the left vestibulocochlear nerve between the tortuous right vertebral artery and the posterior wall of the left porus acusticus internus. Interventions and outcomes: Under the diagnosis of VP, 300 mg oxcarbazepine was administered daily, which relieved the symptoms dramatically. Lesson: The neurovascular cross-compression of the vestibulocochlear nerve by the contralateral vertebral artery tortuosity can cause VP. Periodic paroxysms of right-beating nystagmus accompanying the left-side tinnitus during vertigo attacks in our patient can be explained by secondary central hyperactivity in both vestibular and cochlear nuclei following long-standing neurovascular cross-compression.

Genetic resources of aquatic species are of tremendous value, but worldwide these are maintained almost exclusively as live populations. This is extremely expensive and insecure, and largely results from a pervasive lack of production capability, quality management, and reproducibility in cryopreservation that are barriers in development of germplasm repositories. Community-based technology approaches are emerging that can stimulate research previously limited by a lack of affordable, customizable equipment. Open-access technologies can provide for custom design and fabrication not available through traditional manufacturing. This can assist repository development with robust sample production methods and strong quality management, and can greatly improve reproducibility and standardization. Open technologies can support establishment of new communities of users, makers, and developers that collectively strive to develop open hardware in a distributed (i.e., non-centralized) fashion that can yield aggregate throughput. This occurs through use of consumer-level tools, supplies, software, and equipment, free exchange of designs and modifications, and a shared sense of mission. For cryopreservation and repository development, we have identified 14 categories of open hardware for a processing pathway, and six categories for a quality management pathway. Open hardware offers economic incentives to develop repositories for aquatic species, something that has not occurred despite 70 years of research largely focused on protocol development rather than practical applications. Advanced development of custom scientific hardware enhancing open technologies will be facilitated by interdisciplinary collaboration across biological and engineering fields. Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of chemoembolization versus radioembolization in reducing lung shunt fraction (LSF) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Patients and Methods: In this retrospective study, from March 2012 to January 2021, 457 patients with HCC underwent planning angiography and (99m)Tc-macroaggregated albumin imaging for possible yttrium-90 radioembolization. Ten patients underwent radioembolization, and seven patients underwent conventional chemoembolization for LSF reduction, and a second (99m)Tc-macroaggregated albumin imaging was obtained approximately 1 month later. LSF under both procedures was compared with the Mann-Whitney U-test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: In the radioembolization group, the mean first and second LSF were 13.0±6.9% and 20.9±9.6%, respectively (p=0.059); after radioembolization, LSF was lower in three patients but higher in seven patients. In the chemoembolization group, the mean first and second LSF were 26.1±17.3% and 8.7±5.5%, respectively (p=0.018); after chemoembolization, LSF was reduced in all seven patients. Conclusion: Chemoembolization appears to be more effective in reducing LSF within 1 month compared with radioembolization.

Objective To investigate the ability of kobusone to reduce high glucose levels and promote β-cell proliferation. Methods Four-week-old female db/db mice were assigned to the kobusone (25 mg/kg body weight, intraperitoneally twice a day) or control group (same volume of PBS). Glucose levels and body weight were measured twice a week. After 6 weeks, intraperitoneal glucose tolerance tests and immunohistochemical studies were performed, and insulin levels were determined. The expression of mRNAs involved in cell proliferation, such as PI3K, Akt, cyclin D3 and p57Kip 2 , was measured by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Results Kobusone reduced blood glucose levels after 3 weeks and more strongly increased serum insulin levels than the vehicle. Immunohistochemistry illustrated that kobusone increased 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine incorporation into islet β-cells, suggesting that it can stimulate islet β-cell replication in vivo. RT-qPCR indicated that kobusone upregulated the mRNA expression of PI3K, Akt, and cyclin D3 and downregulated that of p57Kip2. Conclusion Our findings suggest that kobusone is a potent pancreatic islet β-cell inducer that has the potential to be developed as an anti-diabetic agent.

Cryopreservation of living cells is an effective tool for protection, maintenance, and distribution of genetic resources, which involves exposure to cryogenic temperatures and requires precise control over various parameters to avoid potential cell damages. Hundreds of protocols have been reported for cryopreservation of aquatic species, but replicating them is challenging without a reliable monitoring technique during a cryopreservation process. In this work, we aim to use electrical impedance as a monitoring parameter to assist standardization of cryopreservation processes and reporting. Specifically, this paper reports an impedance sensing probe compatible with cryogenic temperatures and conventional containers in cryopreservation of aquatic species based on printed circuit board technology its characterization in cryopreservation conditions including different sperm extenders (buffer) compositions and concentrations, presence of cryoprotectant, and multiple cooling rates. The developed probe based on printed circuit board (PCB) technology shows a capability of measuring conditions during cryopreservation differentiating among samples with different buffer contents and cryoprotectants. The probe also demonstrates the capability to distinguish different cooling regimes and detect phase change phenomena. This PCB-based sensing platform provides quantitative impedance measurement data during the cryopreservation process at sample preparation, cooling, and while frozen. Technology such as this offers opportunities for improving the reproducibility of protocols generated by the aquatic species community and can be made widely available as open hardware.

To determine the value of susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) for collateral estimation and for predicting functional outcomes after acute ischemic stroke. To identify independent predictors of favorable functional outcomes, age, sex, risk factors, baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, baseline diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) lesion volume, site of steno-occlusion, SWI collateral grade, mode of treatment, and successful reperfusion were evaluated by multiple logistic regression analyses. A total of 152 participants were evaluated. A younger age (adjusted odds ratio (aOR), 0.42; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.34 to 0.77; P P = 0.02), a smaller baseline DWI lesion volume (aOR 0.83; 95% CI 0.73 to 0.96; P = 0.01), an intermediate collateral grade (aOR 9.49; 95% CI 1.36 to 66.38; P = 0.02), a good collateral grade (aOR 6.22; 95% CI 1.16 to 33.24; P = 0.03), and successful reperfusion (aOR 5.84; 95% CI 2.08 to 16.42; P = 0.001) were independently associated with a favorable functional outcome. There was a linear association between the SWI collateral grades and functional outcome (P = 0.008). Collateral estimation using the prominent vessel sign on SWI is clinically reliable, as it has prognostic value.

PURPOSE To compare the effectiveness and safety of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and peripherally inserted central catheter (PTA + PICC), contralateral PICC, and midline catheterization (MC) in patients with venous stenosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 7,327 PICC procedures were performed in 5,421 patients at a single institution between 2013 and 2019. Among them, 87 patients had upper-arm venous stenoses and were managed with PTA + PICC, contralateral PICC, or MC. Data on catheter-dwell time, clinical success rate, and adverse events were recorded. The procedure was considered to have clinically succeeded when a PICC was removed from the patient just before discharge or after the completion of therapy. Catheter survival time and the chance of adverse events were compared among the groups using the Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test. RESULTS PTA + PICC, contralateral PICC, and MC procedures were performed for 57 (65.5%, 57/87), 10 (11.5%, 10/87), and 20 (23.0%, 23/87) patients, respectively. The mean catheter-dwell time in the PTA + PICC, contralateral PICC, and MC groups was 49.7, 28.7, and 15.1 days, respectively, and the clinical success rate of each group was 86.0% (49/57), 80.0% (8/10), and 50.0% (10/20). The PTA + PICC group had a significantly longer catheter survival time than the MC group (P < .001). The chance of a catheter-related infection (P = .008) was significantly lower in the PTA + PICC group than in the MC group. CONCLUSIONS PTA + PICC or contralateral PICC should be considered prior to ipsilateral MC when venous stenosis is encountered during PICC procedures.

A 75-year-old patient complained of mastication-induced clicking tinnitus on the left side, and otoendoscopic examination revealed that the left tympanic membraneTM was outwardly bulged by clenching her teeth. Temporal bone computed tomography demonstrated that the posteromedial bony wall of the glenoid was partially dehiscent, allowing herniation of soft tissue contents of temporomandibular joint into the middle ear. Increased middle ear pressure due to soft tissue herniation can induce left tympanic membrane bulging and accompanying clicking tinnitus. Herniation of temporomandibular joint soft tissue into the middle ear should be considered as a differential diagnosis when clicking tinnitus is evoked by mastication. Purpose To evaluate the performance of C-arm computed tomography (CT)–guided chemoembolization in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with serum α-fetoprotein (AFP) level > 20 ng/mL but with no overt tumor on CT and/or magnetic resonance imaging. Materials and Methods From May 2010 to May 2017, 34 patients with HCC (25 men and 9 women; mean age, 59.7 y) who had elevated serum AFP levels (> 20 ng/mL) but no overt tumor on 6-mo imaging studies and had shown complete response (CR) after previous chemoembolization underwent C-arm CT–guided conventional chemoembolization. Three radiologists retrospectively reviewed the imaging studies (preprocedural images, C-arm CT scans, and follow-up images) in consensus, and clinical data including AFP levels were retrospectively obtained. Tumor detection by C-arm CT and treatment response after chemoembolization were assessed. Results HCC was imaged at the time of chemoembolization in 24 of 34 patients (70.6%). C-arm CT detected tumors in 25 patients (73.5%); 23 detections were true positives, 2 were false positives, and 1 was a false negative (diaphragm metastasis). Among the 23 patients with true-positive results, the first follow-up enhanced imaging studies showed CR (n = 17), partial response (n = 1), progressive disease (n = 4), and indeterminate status (n = 1; treated by percutaneous ethanol injection). Conclusions C-arm CT–guided chemoembolization may help to detect and treat recurrent tumors in patients who have shown CR after previous chemoembolization but subsequently, during follow-up surveillance, had serum AFP levels > 20 ng/mL without an overt tumor evident on imaging studies.

Advances in several engineering fields have led to a trend toward miniaturization and portability of wearable biosensing devices, which used to be confined to large tools and clinical settings. Various systems to continuously measure electrophysiological activity through electrical and optical methods are one category of such devices. Being wearable and intended for prolonged use, the amount of noise introduced on sensors by movement remains a challenge and requires further optimization. User movement causes motion artifacts that alter the overall quality of the signals obtained, hence corrupting the resulting measurements. This paper introduces a fully wearable optical biosensing system to continuously measure pulse oximetry and heart rate, utilizing a reflectance-based probe. Furthermore, a novel data-dependent motion artifact tailoring algorithm is implemented to eliminate noisy data due to the motion artifact and measure oxygenation level with high accuracy in real time. By taking advantages of current wireless transmission and signal processing technologies, the developed wearable photoplethysmography device successfully captures the measured signals and sends them wirelessly to a mobile device for signal processing in real time. After applying motion artifact tailoring, evaluating accuracy with a continuous clinical device, the blood oxygenation measurements obtained from our system yielded an accuracy of at least 98%, when compared to a range of 93.6%-96.7% observed before from the same initial data. Additionally, heart rate accuracy above 97% was achieved. Motion artifact tailoring and removal in real time, continuous systems will allow wearable devices to be truly wearable and a reliable electrophysiological monitoring and diagnostics tool for everyday use.

Cryopreservation has been recognized as a powerful tool for long-term preservation of genetic resources. However, the outcomes of cryopreservation by different user groups often vary due to inconsistency in procedures and freezing equipment. Herein, we report on the feasibility of providing customizable sensing probes with three-dimensional (3-D) printing to monitor cryopreservation phenomena. The objectives were to: 1) introduce 3-D printing as a fabrication method for developing customizable probes to be used in cryogenic applications; 2) design and fabricate an example of a 3-D printed sensing probe and multiplexer capable of detecting phase-change phenomena based on quantitative data regarding sample electrical resistance and temperature, and 3) demonstrate the sensing platform in cryopreservation conditions and in combination with a custom-made 3-D printed freezing device. The sensing probe developed was designed to fit within standard 0.5-ml French straws. Phase-transition phenomena were detected by analyzing electrical resistance changes. The quantitative data from this device in conjugation with a 3-D printed freezer rack provided cryopreservation capability with high reproducibility and offered an alternative to expensive programmable freezers. The use of 3-D printing provided flexibility to develop new sensing probes or modify existing designs based on specific needs. After initial prototyping, fabrication, and testing of 3-D printed sensing probes, particularly useful designs can lead to the reduction of variation in performing standardized cryopreservation protocols.

Animals are capable of using visual cues to find the correct route during navigation. These visual cues, which contain spatial information on the direction towards the goal point, are perceived either allocentrically or egocentrically. In this study, we examined how navigating with these two types of visual cues affects the learning processes of rodents. To present egocentrically-stable spatial cues, we devised a head-mounted device that provided discriminative orientation cues that indicated the correct choice at a fork within a double Y-maze. For allocentrically-stable spatial cues, LEDs serving as external route-mark cues were attached to the walls of the double Y-maze and illuminated to indicate the correct pathway. To rule out the possibility of the mice using extra-maze cues, we rotated the entire maze and used different start and goal sites for every trial. Our results revealed that mice using egocentric cues and external route-mark cues both showed a sigmoidal learning process for spatial navigation and that external route mark-based learning, surprisingly, learned faster than egocentric stimulus-based learning in egocentric space.

Background The pain-relief properties of tricyclic antidepressants can be attributed to several actions. Recent observations suggest that adenosine is involved in the antinociceptive effect of amitriptyline. The A3 adenosine receptor (A3AR) is the only adenosine subtype overexpressed in inflammatory and cancer cells. This study was performed to investigate the role of A3AR in the anti-nociceptive effect of amitriptyline. Methods Spinal nerve-ligated neuropathic pain was induced by ligating the L5 and L6 spinal nerves of male Sprague-Dawley rats. The neuropathic rats were randomly assigned to one of the following three groups (8 per group): a neuropathic pain with normal saline group, a neuropathic pain with amitriptyline group, and a neuropathic pain with amitriptyline and 3-ethyl-5-benzyl- 2-methyl-4-phenylethynyl-6-phenyl-1,4-(±)-dihydropyridine-3,5-dicarboxylate (MRS) group. Amitriptyline or saline was administered intraperitoneally and 3-ethyl-5-benzyl-2-methyl-4-phenylethynyl-6-phenyl-1,4-(±)-dihydropyridine-3,5-dicarboxylate (MRS-1191), an A3AR antagonist, was injected subcutaneously immediately before amitriptyline administration. The level of extracellular signal-regulated kinase P44/42 (ERK1/2), cyclic AMP response element-binding protein (CREB), and proinflammatory cytokines were assessed using immunoblotting or reverse-transciption polymerase chain reaction. Results Amitriptyline increased the mechanical withdrawal threshold of the neuropathic rats. The level of phospho-ERK1/2 and phospho-CREB proteins, and proinflammatory cytokines produced by spinal nerve ligation were significantly reduced by amitriptyline administration. However, the use of MRS-1191 before amitriptyline administration not only reduced the threshold of mechanical allodynia, but also increased the signaling protein and proinflammatory cytokine levels, which were reduced by amitriptyline. Conclusions The results of this study suggest that the anti-nociceptive effect of amitriptyline involves the suppression of ERK1/2 and CREB signaling proteins, and A3AR activation also affects the alleviation of the inflammatory response.

Herein, we demonstrate that two-dimensional (2D) CdSeS quantum dot monolayers (QDM) can strongly influence efficient charge transport and charge separation, improving the performance of inverted polymer solar cells (iPSCs). Also, for the first time we report the electronic band structure of CdSeS and CdSeS@ZnS QDs and an effective approach to apply the 2D QDM as an effective electron transport layer in iPSCs from work function studies. The iPSCs with the 2D CdSeS QDM showed maximum power conversion efficiencies of 8.83%, which were 26% higher than the reference. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) measurements were performed to confirm the charge separation and electron transport behavior in the iPSCs with 2D QDMs. The PL decay time of the iPSCs with the CdSeS QDM at 720 nm was ∼60 ps, which is much faster than that of the iPSCs without the 2D QDM. The enhanced photovoltaic performance of the iPSCs with the 2D CdSeS QDM can be attributed to the effective charge separation and electron transport performance due to the high built-in voltage and fast exciton decay time from the 2D QDM.

As promising photo-absorbing materials for photovoltaics, organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite materials such as methylammonium lead iodide and formamidinium lead iodide, have attracted lots of attention from many researchers. Among the various factors to be considered for high power conversion efficiency (PCE) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), increasing the grain size of perovskite is most important. However, it is difficult to obtain a highly crystalline perovskite film with large grain size by using the conventional hot-plate annealing method because heat is transferred unidirectionally from the bottom to the top. In this work, we presented radiative thermal annealing (RTA) to improve the structural and electrical properties of perovskite films. Owing to the omnidirectional heat transfer, swift and uniform nuclei formation was possible within the perovskite film. An average grain size of 500 nm was obtained, which is 5 times larger than that of the perovskite film annealed on a hot-plate. This perovskite film led to an enhancement of photovoltaic performance of PSCs. Both short-circuit current density and PCE of the PSCs prepared by RTA were improved by 10%, compared to those of PSCs prepared by hot-plate annealing.

Radiotherapy, although used worldwide for the treatment of head, neck, and oral cancers, causes acute complications, including effects on vasculature and immune response due to cellular stress. Thus, the ability to diagnose side-effects and monitor vascular response in real-time during radiotherapy would be highly beneficial for clinical and research applications. In this study, recently-developed fluorescence micro-endoscopic technology provides non-invasive, high-resolution, real-time imaging at the cellular level. Moreover, with the application of high-resolution imaging technologies and micro-endoscopy, which enable improved monitoring of adverse effects in GFP-expressing mouse models, changes in the oral vasculature and lymphatic vessels are quantified in real time for 10 days following a mild localized single fractionation, 10 Gy radiotherapy treatments. Fluorescence micro-endoscopy enables quantification of the cardiovascular recovery and immune response, which shows short-term reduction in mean blood flow velocity, in lymph flow, and in transient immune infiltration even after this mild radiation dose, in addition to long-term reduction in blood vessel capacity. The data provided may serve as a reference for the expected cellular-level physiological, cardiovascular, and immune changes in animal disease models after radiotherapy.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been extensively used as a hole transport layer in many inverted polymer solar cell devices. However, its potential as an electron transport layer in a solar cell device has rarely been reported. In this paper, we demonstrate an iPSC with enhanced photovoltaic performance by the introduction of a MoS2 nanosheet (NS) interlayer. Herein, MoS2 NS thin films were uniformly deposited on a polyethylenimine ethoxylated polymer by an electrostatic interaction. The MoS2 NS interlayer in the iPSC device plays important roles as a sub-photo sensitizer and an electron transport layer and provides effective charge separation for the enhancement of device performance. iPSCs with MoS2 NSs based on bulk heterojunction active materials such as P3HT:PC60BM, PTB7:PC71BM and PTB7-Th:PC71BM showed maximum power conversion efficiencies of 3.54%, 8.12%, and 9.08%, respectively, which were 27%, 11%, and 15% higher than those of the reference, respectively. Furthermore, the enhanced photovoltaic performance and electron transport mechanism of the iPSCs with the MoS2 NSs were confirmed experimentally using finite-difference-time-domain modeling and time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) measurements. The computational simulation results showed that the light absorption of the iPSCs with the MoS2 NS interlayer was slightly better than that of the iPSCs without the MoS2 NS interlayer. The electron decay time of PTB7:PC71BM with the MoS2 NS interlayer at a wavelength of 700 nm was reduced to 60 ps from 100 ps of PTB7:PC71BM without the MoS2 NS interlayer. The efficient light absorption and electron transfer characteristics of MoS2 NSs significantly improved the photovoltaic conversion performance of the iPSC devices.

To investigate the effects of Gastrodia elata Blume (GEB) and 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol (HBA) on brain damage, GEB or HBA was administered orally for 14 days before middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). After 24 h reperfusion, the proportion of circling was significantly reduced in the GEB (79%) or HBA (69%) group compared to the MCAO group (100%) in the corner test, and the removal time in the adhesive removal test was significantly decreased in the GEB (117 ± 21.0 s) and HBA (101 ± 20.9 s) groups compared to the MCAO group (161 ± 12.6 s). GEB treatment significantly reduced infarct volume compared to the MCAO group. In the GEB and HBA group, necrosis of nerve cells in hippocampus and cortex, expressions of TNF-α and TUNEL positive cells were significantly reduced compared to the MCAO group. These results suggest that GEB and HBA prevents brain damage by anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects.

PURPOSE To compare tumor vascularity in 4 types of rat hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) models: N1S1, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-transfected N1S1 (VEGF-N1S1), McA-RH7777, and VEGF-transfected McA-RH7777 (VEGF-McA-RH777) tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS The N1S1 and McA-RH7777 cell lines were transfected with expression vectors containing cDNA for rat VEGF. Eighty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats (weight range, 400-450 g) were randomly divided into 4 groups (ie, 22 rats per model), and 4 types of tumor models were created by using the N1S1, VEGF-N1S1, McA-RH7777, and VEGF-McA-RH777 cell lines. Tumor vascularity was evaluated by perfusion computed tomography (CT), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of VEGF, CD34 staining, angiography, and Lipiodol transarterial embolization. Intergroup discrepancies were evaluated by Kruskal-Wallis test. RESULTS Arterial perfusion (P < .001), portal perfusion (P = .015), total perfusion (P < .001), tumor VEGF level (P = .002), and microvessel density (MVD; P = .007) were significantly different among groups. VEGF-McA-RH7777 tumors showed the greatest arterial perfusion (46.7 mL/min/100 mL ± 15.5), total perfusion (60.7 mL/min/100 mL ± 21.8), tumor VEGF level (3,376.7 pg/mL ± 145.8), and MVD (34.5‰ ± 7.5). Whereas most tumors in the N1S1, VEGF-N1S1, and McA-RH7777 groups showed hypovascular staining on angiography and minimal Lipiodol uptake after embolization, 5 of 6 VEGF-McA-RH7777 tumors (83.3%) presented hypervascular tumor staining and moderate to compact Lipiodol uptake. CONCLUSIONS McA-RH7777 tumors were more hypervascular than N1S1 tumors, and tumor vascularity was enhanced further by VEGF transfection. Therefore, the VEGF-McA-RH7777 tumor is recommended to mimic hypervascular human HCC in rats.

In this paper, we present the development of a solution-processed photovoltaic structure designed to convert human body thermal radiation into electricity. An active layer composed of a layer of isopropylamine-capped lead sulfide (PbS) quantum dots (QDs) covered with a layer of lithium chloride (LiCl) on top is sandwiched between a substrate and an aluminum contact. Experimental measurements reveal that the device was sensitive to infrared radiation with energies lower than the optical bandgap energy of the incorporated nanocrystals (Eg = 1.26 eV), allowing one to harvest thermal radiation from a human body. We used a conceptually different approach to harvest this radiation by intentionally introducing mid-gap states to the lead sulfide quantum dots through passivation with isopropylamine and likely enabling a multi-step photon absorption mechanism.

Existing deep feature learning methods usually compute semantic similarity on an embedding space over the average of the extracted features, relying on delicately selected samples for fast convergence. These deep learned features suffer from interand intra-class variations since they are spread across the feature space. In this paper, we present a rank-based feature learning method by exploiting the structured information among features for better separating non-linear data. By exploring Riemannian manifolds' geometric properties, the proposed approach models natural second-order statistics such as covariance and optimizes the dispersion using the distribution of Riemannian distances between a reference sample and neighbors and builds a ranked list according to the similarities. Experiments demonstrate significant improvement over state-of-the-art methods on three widely used EEG datasets in motor imagery task classification. Furthermore, the proposed method jointly enlarges the inter-class distances reduces the intra-class distances for learned features.

Cost-effective, abundant, and non-toxic SnS nanosheet semiconductors can be used as water-splitting cells. Herein, a photoanode based on high-purity and highly crystalline SnS nanosheets was fabricated. We used sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3·5H2O) and stannous chloride (SnCl2·2H2O) as the tin and sulfur source materials, in place of SnCl4 and H2S gas, respectively, which have been used in previous studies. This gas-free fabrication process represents a new, environment-friendly fabrication method that can reduce the manufacturing cost of SnS nanosheets. The fabricated samples were characterized via X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, XPS, scanning electron microscopy, and Raman analyses. The XPS result indicated no Sn0 or Sn4+ in the S3 nanosheet, the nanosheet was SnS. These results with XRD show that the SnS nanosheet has high phase purity and crystallinity. Its direct optical band gap is 1.31 eV, and its lattice parameters are similar to those of standard SnS. The SnS nanosheet-based photoanode exhibited a maximum saturation photocurrent of 6.86 mA cm−2 at 0.57 V versus Ag/AgCl, with high stability. The most effective photocurrent for the photocatalytic water-splitting cell is attained with an increase in the surface area and developed electrical conduction. This is attributed to thermal annealing, which eliminates nanoparticle imperfections. This study confirms that SnS nanosheets are excellent candidates for water-splitting applications.

Because modern electronic systems are likely to be exposed to high intensity radiated fields (HIRF) environments, there is growing interest in understanding how electronic systems are affected by such environments. Backdoor coupling in particular is an area of concern for all electronics, but there is limited understanding about the mechanisms behind backdoor coupling. In this work, we present a study on printed circuit board (PCB) backdoor coupling and the effects of via fencing. Existing work focuses on ideal stackups and indicates that edge radiation is significantly reduced by via fencing. In this study, both full wave electromagnetic modeling and experimental verification are used to investigate both ideal and practical PCB stackups. In the ideal scenario, we find that via fencing substantially reduces coupling, which is consistent with prior work on emissions. In the practical scenario, we incorporate component footprints and traces which naturally introduce openings in the top ground plane. Both simulation and experimental data indicate that via fencing in the practical scenario does not substantially mitigate coupling, suggesting that PCB edge coupling is not the dominant coupling mechanism, even at varying angles of incidence and polarization.

PURPOSE: To analyze the origin and anatomic course of the hepatic arteries by using digital subtraction angiography (DSA) and multidetector CT in a large study sample. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 5625 patients who underwent liver CT and chemoembolization between January 2005 and December 2018 (mean age, 60 years ± 11 [range, 11–99 years]; 4464 males). The CT and DSA images were reviewed to evaluate the visceral arterial anatomy for variations in the celiac axis and hepatic arteries. Aberrant right hepatic arteries (aRHAs) and aberrant left hepatic arteries (aLHAs) were defined on the basis of their origin and anatomic course. Statistical analyses were performed to evaluate the association between aRHAs and aLHAs and the association between variations in the hepatic artery and celiac axis. RESULTS: Right hepatic arteries were categorized as being aRHAs (if originating from the proximal to middle common hepatic artery, gastroduodenal artery, superior mesenteric artery [SMA], celiac axis, aorta, splenic artery, or left gastric artery [LGA]) or as being aLHAs (if arising from the LGA, celiac axis, aorta, or SMA). The prevalence of aRHAs (15.63%; 879 of 5625) and the prevalence aLHAs (16.32%; 918 of 5625) were similar. Patients with an aRHA were more likely to have an aLHA than those without an aRHA (29.01% vs 13.97%; P < .001), and patients with an aLHA were more likely to have an aRHA than those without an aLHA (27.78% vs 13.26%; P < .001). There was no association between the hepatic arterial variations and celiac axis variations. A hypothetical anatomic model summarizing the observed variations was created. CONCLUSION: A comprehensive list of hepatic arterial variations and a three-dimensional hypothetical model for the observed variations were described. Aging is a multifactorial process that involves numerous genetic changes, so identifying anti-aging agents is quite challenging. Age-associated genetic factors must be better understood to search appropriately for anti-aging agents. We utilized an aging-related gene expression pattern-trained machine learning system that can implement reversible changes in aging by linking combinatory drugs.In silicogene expression pattern-based drug repositioning strategies, such as connectivity map, have been developed as a method for unique drug discovery. However, these strategies have limitations such as lists that differ for input and drug-inducing genes or constraints to compare experimental cell lines to target diseases. To address this issue and improve the prediction success rate, we modified the original version of expression profiles with a stepwise-filtered method. We utilized a machine learning system called deep-neural network (DNN). Here we report that combinational drug pairs using differential expressed genes (DEG) had a more enhanced anti-aging effect compared with single independent treatments on leukemia cells. This study shows potential drug combinations to retard the effects of aging with higher efficacy using innovative machine learning techniques.

To evaluate the role of collateral and permeability imaging derived from dynamic contrast material-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography to predict PH 2 hemorrhagic transformation in acute ischemic stroke. The secondary analysis of a published data from participants with acute ischemic stroke. The multiphase collateral map and permeability imaging were generated by using dynamic signals from dynamic contrast material-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography obtained at admission. To identify independent predictors of PH 2 hemorrhagic transformation, age, sex, risk factors, baseline National Institutes of Health Stoke Scale (NIHSS) score, baseline DWI lesion volume, collateral-perfusion status, mode of treatment, and successful early reperfusion were evaluated with multiple logistic regression analyses and the significance of permeability imaging in prediction of PH 2 hemorrhagic transformation was evaluated by subgroup analysis. In 115 participants, including 70 males (mean (SD) age, 69 (12) years), PH 2 hemorrhagic transformation occurred in 6 participants with very poor collateral-perfusion status (MAC 0). MAC 0 (OR, 0.06; 95% CI, 0.01, 0.74; P = .03) was independently associated with PH 2 hemorrhagic transformation. In 22 participants with MAC 0, the permeable signal on Kep permeability imaging was the only significant characteristic associated with PH 2 hemorrhagic transformation (P = .009). The specificity of Kep permeability imaging was 93.8% (95% confidence interval: 69.8, 99.8) in predicting PH 2 hemorrhagic transformation. Individual-based prediction of PH 2 hemorrhagic transformation in patients with acute ischemic stroke may be possible with multiphase collateral map and permeability imaging derived from dynamic contrast material-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography.

To investigate the prevalence and patterns of aberrant gastric venous drainage and associated atrophy of the hepatic segment on contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT). Two radiologists retrospectively reviewed contrast-enhanced CT images from 2021 patients who underwent cone-beam CT-guided chemoembolization between January 2013 and December 2018. They determined the presence or absence of an aberrant gastric vein(s) and its drainage site by consensus, and qualitatively analyzed the presence or absence of atrophy of segments II or III. In cases of disagreement between the two reviewers regarding the presence of atrophy, quantitative analysis was performed using dedicated software. A total of 31 aberrant right gastric veins were revealed on CT (1.5%), most of which drained into P2 (n = 8), the S2/3 border zone (n = 8), S2 (n = 6), or S4 (n = 5). An aberrant left gastric vein was observed in 21 (1.0%) patients, and P2 was the most common drainage site (n = 13) in these patients. We address the problem of human action classification in drone videos. Due to the high cost of capturing and labeling large-scale drone videos with diverse actions, we present unsupervised and semi-supervised domain adaptation approaches that leverage both the existing fully annotated action recognition datasets and unannotated (or only a few annotated) videos from drones. To study the emerging problem of drone-based action recognition, we create a new dataset, NEC-DRONE, containing 5,250 videos to evaluate the task. We tackle both problem settings with 1) same and 2) different action label sets for the source (e.g., Kinectics dataset) and target domains (drone videos). We present a combination of video and instance-based adaptation methods, paired with either a classifier or an embedding-based framework to transfer the knowledge from source to target. Our results show that the proposed adaptation approach substantially improves the performance on these challenging and practical tasks. We further demonstrate the applicability of our method for learning cross-view action recognition on the Charades-Ego dataset. We provide qualitative analysis to understand the behaviors of our approaches.

Background Collateral circulation determines tissue fate and affects treatment result in acute ischemic stroke. A precise method for collateral estimation in an optimal imaging protocol is necessary to make an appropriate treatment decision for acute ischemic stroke. Purpose To verify the value of multiphase collateral imaging data sets (MR angiography collateral map) derived from dynamic contrast material-enhanced MR angiography for predicting functional outcomes after acute ischemic stroke. Materials and Methods This secondary analysis of an ongoing prospective observational study included data from participants with acute ischemic stroke due to occlusion or stenosis of the unilateral internal carotid artery and/or M1 segment of the middle cerebral artery who were evaluated within 8 hours of symptom onset. Data were obtained from March 2016 through August 2018. The collateral grading based on the MR angiography collateral map was estimated by using six-scale MR acute ischemic stroke collateral (MAC) scores. To identify independent predictors of favorable functional outcomes, age, sex, risk factors, baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, baseline diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) lesion volume, site of steno-occlusion, collateral grade, mode of treatment, and early reperfusion were evaluated with multiple logistic regression analyses. Results One hundred fifty-four participants (mean age ± standard deviation, 69 years ± 13; 99 men) were evaluated. Younger age (odds ratio [OR], 0.45; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.29, 0.70; P < .001), lower baseline NIHSS score (OR, 0.85; 95% CI: 0.78, 0.94; P < .001), MAC score of 3 (OR, 27; 95% CI: 4.0, 179; P < .001), MAC score of 4 (OR, 17; 95% CI: 2.1, 134; P = .007), MAC score of 5 (OR, 27; 95% CI: 2.5, 306; P = .007), and successful early reperfusion (OR, 7.5; 95% CI: 2.6, 22; P < .001) were independently associated with favorable functional outcomes in multivariable analysis. There was a linear negative association between collateral perfusion grades and functional outcomes (P < .001). Conclusion An MR angiography collateral map was clinically reliable for collateral estimation in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is common in East Asia because of hepatitis B virus endemic area. Conventional chemoembolization using Lipiodol has been established as mainstay modality in unresectable HCC. Superselective catheterization is the most important way to guarantee better outcome and safety of chemoembolization. Recent advancement of cone-beam CT, small caliber microcatheter, and resilient guidewire has made it easier than before. As the clinicians have experienced more safe and effective chemoembolization in advanced stage HCC, chemoembolization is actively chosen as sole therapy or combination therapy in HCC patients with vascular invasion. In small HCC, superselective chemoembolization may have comparable outcome with ablation or resection. Drug-eluting beads chemoembolization and radioembolization have been introduced as more potent treatment modality and should be performed in superselective fashion to enhance tumor response and to ensure their safety.

In this study, we present efficient semi-transparent solar cells with enhanced performance at low intensity illumination via the incorporation of emissive quantum clusters consisting of 22 Au atoms. The inclusion of Au22 quantum clusters (Au22-QCs) in semi-transparent solar cells led to a substantial reduction of the dependence on the incident light intensity as well as an increase in device efficiency. For the control semi-transparent solar cell, which has ~ 25% transparency, there was a 35% drop in efficiency with a light intensity decrease of 40% (0.6 sun). However, for the semi-transparent solar cell with Au22-QCs, there was only a 15% drop in efficiency under 0.6 sun irradiation. Less dependence on incident light intensity can be a great advantage in the practical use of semi-transparent solar cells. The change in the intensity of the incident light can also be caused by simply changing the angle of the light and device. Thus, the performance of general solar cells is strongly dependent on the angle of incident light. However, such angle dependence was effectively suppressed in solar cells with Au22-QCs. Furthermore, less dependence on the angle of incidence light offered a great advantage in driving flexible solar cells. The performance difference between the flat state and bending state was significantly reduced in our semi-transparent flexible solar cell with Au22-QCs.

This study focused on establishing a framework for the designation of a conservation area reflecting an ecotope concept, and its application to Korea’s Seoraksan National Park. Taking into consideration the mountainous topography of the study area, the watershed was chosen as the planning unit, and ecotope mapping was carried out to identify topographic and biological features. For the evaluation of the state of recent use, the trail index and the distribution status of tour and management facilities were used. These features were processed using Marxan with Zones. As a result, the optimal solution of scenario 1 was selected as the final one following detailed verification of the area ratio and grouping of the Park Nature Conservation Area (zone A, 76.7%) and the Park Nature Environment Area (I) (zone B, 14.3%), the inclusion ratio of biotope grade I (95.2%) and the satisfied shortfall value of the conservation indicators. In the overlap analysis between the optimal solution and recent zonation, most of the features included in the suggested scenario were found to be correctly distributed according to the intensity of conservation. Furthermore, the northern parts of the watershed which include sub-alpine vegetation with the Baekdudaegan ridge as its ecological axis was newly separated into the Park Conservation Area. This verification confirmed the improvement of recent zonation through the concrete criteria of ecotope mapping.

To investigate the incidence of positional nystagmus (PN) using a head-roll test in patients with Ramsay Hunt syndrome with vertigo (RHS_V) and discuss possible mechanisms.Retrospective study.Tertiary referral academic medical center.Twenty-eight patients with RHS_V were enrolled.Eye movements were recorded at positions of head roll to the right or left, and PN was classified as direction-fixed or direction-changing. Vestibular function tests including caloric test were performed.Direction-fixed nystagmus beating away from the affected side was the most common type of PN (61%), followed by direction-changing geotropic type (18%), direction-fixed nystagmus beating toward the affected side (14%), and direction-changing apogeotropic type (7%). The duration of nystagmus was longer than 60 seconds in all patients exhibiting direction-changing PN. Postcontrast T1-weighted internal auditory canal (IAC) magnetic resonance imaging showed enhancement of not only the facial and vestibulocochlear nerves, but also the inner ear structures or dura along the IAC, suggesting inflammatory changes within the labyrinthine membrane or IAC dura.Although direction-fixed PN was more commonly observed (75%), direction-changing PN was also observed in some RHS_V patients (25%). The mechanism of direction-changing PN may be, at least in part, explained by the alteration of specific gravity of the lateral semicircular canal cupula or endolymph due to inflammation in the inner ear membrane.

Laparoscopic surgery is often prolonged and requires positional changes to facilitate surgical access. Previous studies reported intraocular pressure (IOP) changes in one fixed position. This study investigated the effect of desflurane and propofol anesthesia on IOP during repeated positional changes. A total of 46 patients undergoing laparoscopic colorectal surgery were randomized into desflurane or propofol groups. IOP was measured using a handheld tonometer at seven time points: before induction (baseline), after endotracheal intubation, after pneumoperitoneum, after the first Trendelenburg and right tilt position, after reverse Trendelenburg and right tilt position, after the second Trendelenburg and right tilt position and before endotracheal extubation. Trendelenburg positioning raised IOP in both groups. In the desflurane group, IOP at the first Trendelenburg position was 6.27 and 8.48 mmHg higher than baseline IOP in left and right eye, respectively; IOP at the second Trendelenburg position was 7 and 9.44 mmHg higher than baseline in left and right eye, respectively. In the propofol group, IOP at the first Trendelenburg position was 2.04 and 4.04 mmHg higher than baseline in left and right eyes, respectively. It was 3.04 and 4.87 mmHg higher than baseline in left and right eye, respectively, at the second Trendelenburg position. In the desflurane group, 56.52% patients exhibited high IOP (≥ 25 mmHg) compared with 13.04% in the propofol group at the second Trendelenburg position in the right eyes (P = 0.005). Recently, all-inorganic perovskite quantum dots (PeQDs), CsPbX3 have become attractive because of their excellent optoelectronic properties and superior air/moisture stabilities compared with conventional organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites, and the application of CsPbX3 PeQDs to light-emitting devices (LEDs) has also become competitive. To enable the use of CsPbX3 PeQDs for thin-film-type perovskite quantum-dot LEDs (PeQLEDs), a paradox associated with the ligand property and surface passivation must be overcome during thin-film fabrication. A decline in the photoemission performance was observed at relatively low amounts of surface-passivating ligands, while the quality of the thin film deteriorated in the presence of excessive ligands.
