The low-lying triplet and singlet potential energy surfaces of the O(3P)+CH3CN reaction have been studied at the G3(MP2)//B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level. On the triplet surface, six kinds of pathways are revealed, namely, direct hydrogen abstraction, C-addition/elimination, N-addition/elimination, substitution, insertion, and H-migration. Multichannel Rice–Ramsperger–Kassel–Marcus theory and transition-state theory are employed to calculate the overall and individual rate constants over a wide range of temperatures and pressures. It is predicted that the direct hydrogen abstraction and C-addition/elimination on triplet potential energy surface are dominant pathways. Major predicted end products include CH3+NCO and CH2CN+OH. At atmospheric pressure with Ar and N2 as bath gases, CH3C(O)N (IM1) formed by collisional stabilization is dominated at T<700 K, whereas CH3 and NCO produced by C-addition/elimination pathway are the major products at the temperatures between 800 and 1500 K; the direct hydrogen abstraction leading to CH2CN+OH plays an important role at higher temperatures in hydrocarbon combustion chemistry and flames, with estimated contribution of 64% at 2000 K. Furthermore, the calculated rate constants are in good agreement with available experimental data over the temperature range 300–600 K. The kinetic isotope effect has also been calculated for the triplet O(3P)+CH3CN reaction. On the singlet surface, the atomic oxygen can easily insert into C–H or C–C bonds of CH3CN, forming the insertion intermediates s-IM8(HOCH2CN) and s-IM5(CH3OCN) or add to the carbon atom of CN group in CH3CN, forming the addition intermediate s-IM1(CH3C(O)N); both approaches were found to be barrierless. It is indicated that the singlet reaction exhibits a marked difference from the triplet reaction. The reactions between nitrile oxides and alkenes are of considerable interest in organic synthesis as the resulting heterocycles are versatile intermediates for the synthesis of natural products and biologically active compounds. In this paper, we design a series of reactions of phosphonyl nitrile oxides with acrylonnitrile, which can give 2:1 cycloaddition products with no crystal structure released so far, and present a detailed theoretical study on the mechanism of the 2:1 1, 3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction, which has been explored with density functional theory calculations at B3LYP/6-31G* level. The results reveal that the following mechanism is quite possible. Firstly, it starts as a normal 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction to produce a regiospecific 1:1 product. Subsequently, highly reactive diisopropanyl phosphonyl nitrile oxide sequentially reacts with the aforementioned regiospecific 1:1 product and gives the corresponding cycloadduct. Schinifoline (SF), a 4-quinolinone derivative, was found in Zanthoxylum schinifolium for the first time. 4-Quinolinone moieties are thought to have cytotoxic activity and are often used as a tubulin polymerization inhibitors, heterogeneous enzyme inhibitors and antiplatelet agents. However, very little information respect to radiosensitization has focused on SF. This work aimed to investigate the radiosensitizing effect of SF on A549 cells. The cell viability results indicated cytotoxicity of SF on A549 cells, with IC50 values of 33.7 ± 2.4, 21.9 ± 1.9 and 16.8 ± 2.2 μg/mL, respectively, after 6, 12, 24 h treatment with different concentrations, and the 10% or 20% IC50 concentration during 12 h was applied in later experiments. The results of cell proliferative inhibition and clonogenic assay showed that SF enhanced the radiosensitivity of A549 cells when applied before 60Co γ-irradiation and this effect was mainly time and concentration dependent. The flow cytometric data indicated that SF treatment before the irradiation increased the G2/M phase, thus improving the radiosensitivity of A549, leading to cell apoptosis. The novel iron selenidostannates [Fe(bipy)3]Sn4Se9·2H2O (1) and [Fe(bipy)3]2[Sn3Se7]2·bipy·2H2O (2) (bipy = bipyridine) were prepared by the reactions of Sn, Se, FeCl2·4H2O, bipy, and dien with/without KSCN under hydrothermal conditions (dien = diethylenetriamine). In 1, four SnSe5 units condense via edge sharing to form the novel 3-D framework selenidostannate ∞³[Sn4Se92-] containing an interpenetrating channel system. The [Fe(bipy)3]2+ cations are accommodated in the different channels according to the conformation of the [Fe(bipy)3]2+ cation. In 2, three SnSe5 units share edges to form a 2-D ∞²[Sn3Se72-] layered anion, while two SnSe5 units and one SnSe4 unit are connected via edge sharing, forming a 1-D ∞¹[Sn3Se72-] chainlike anion. The ∞¹[Sn3Se72-], [Fe(bipy)3]2+, bipy, and H2O species are embedded between the ∞²[Sn3Se72-] layers. 2 is the first example of a selenidostannate constructed by both ∞²[Sn3Se72-]and ∞¹[Sn3Se72-] anions. Solvothermal reaction of Cu(OAc)2·H2O, tri(2-carboxyethyl)isocyanurate (H3tci) and 4,4′-bipyridine (bpy) or 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane (bpp) leads to the generation of two novel metal–organic frameworks, [Cu(Htci)(bpy)]·0.5H2O (1) and [Cu3(tci)2(bpp)2(H2O)]·3H2O (2). 1features a 3D self-penetrating framework which results from two-fold interpenetrating 4-connected CdSO4nets linked by carboxylate oxygen atoms of tci ligands. 2is a 3D self-penetrating 3,4,6-connected 3-nodal net with the stoichiometry (3-c)2(4-c)(6-c) constructed by a two-fold interpenetrating (4.102)2(42.104) net connected by bpp ligands. The dual-level direct kinetics method has been used to investigate the multichannel reactions of C2H5I + Cl. Three hydrogen abstraction channels and one displacement process are found for the title reaction. The calculation indicates that the hydrogen abstraction from &bond;CH2&bond; group is the dominant reaction channel, and the displacement process may be negligible because of the high barrier. The rate constants for individual reaction channels are calculated by the improved canonical variational transition-state theory with small-curvature tunneling correction over the temperature range of 220–1500 K. Our results show that the tunneling correction plays an important role in the rate constant calculation in the low-temperature range. Agreement between the calculated and experimental data available is good. The Arrhenius expression k(T) = 2.33 × 10-16T1.83 exp(-185.01/T) over a wide temperature range is obtained. Furthermore, the kinetic isotope effects for the reaction C2H5I + Cl are estimated so as to provide theoretical estimation for future laboratory investigation. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three new cucurbitane triterpenoids 1-3 and one new steroidal glycoside 4, were isolated together with ten known compounds from Momordica charantia. The structures of new compounds were determined to be 19(R)-n-butanoxy-5β,19-epoxycucurbita-6,23-diene-3β,25-diol 3-O-β-glucopyranoside (1), 23-O-β-allopyranosylecucurbita-5,24-dien-7α,3β,22(R),23(S)-tetraol 3-O-β-allopyranoside. A sequential one-pot two-step tandem reaction for efficient synthesis of polysubstituted cyclopropanes has been developed. The three-component reaction of α-halogenated methylene compounds, aromatic aldehydes, and acetonitrile derivatives produced first the intermediates pyridinium salts and electron-deficient olefins, followed by cyclopropanation of pyridinium ylide with electron-deficient olefins in situ to afford polysubstituted cyclopropanes. Practical adhesion of rubber to aluminum is measured for various aluminum silanization treatments. In this study, 6-(3-triethoxysilylpropylamino)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4- dithiol (TES) was used as the coupling agent for preparing self-assembly monolayers (SAMs) on an aluminum surface. The structure and chemical composition of the SAMs were analyzed using Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The changes in the surface features of the aluminum surface due to TES treatment were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The adhesive properties of the silanized aluminum surface and EPDM rubber have been evaluated by a T-peel strength test. The results suggested that the Si-O-Al bonding at aluminum TES interface existed and a TES self-assembly monolayer was formed on the aluminum surface. More than 6.0 KN/m adhesion strength is obtained when the aluminum is silanized with 2.5 mmol/dm3 TES, cured at 160 °C and vulcanized with EPDM rubber at 160 °C for 30 min. It is suggested that the TES self-assembly monolayer is bound to aluminum through its ethoxysilyl functional group, and the thiol function group is strongly crosslinked to EPDM rubber, respectively. Micromixing is a crucial step for biochemical reactions in microfluidic networks. A critical challenge is that the system containing micromixers needs numerous pumps, chambers, and channels not only for the micromixing but also for the biochemical reactions and detections. Thus, a simple and compatible design of the micromixer element for the system is essential. Here, we propose a simple, yet effective, scheme that enables micromixing and a biochemical reaction in a single microfluidic chamber without using any pumps. We accomplish this process by using natural convection in conjunction with alternating heating of two heaters for efficient micromixing, and by regulating capillarity for sample transport. As a model application, we demonstrate micromixing and subsequent polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for an influenza viral DNA fragment. This process is achieved in a platform of a microfluidic cartridge and a microfabricated heating- instrument with a fast thermal response. A new type of molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) optosensor was developed by anchoring the MIP layer on the surface of Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) via a surface molecular imprinting process. The synergetic combination of the RTP property of the Mn-doped ZnS QDs and the merits of the surface imprinting polymers not only improves the RTP selectivity of the Mn-doped ZnS QDs but also makes the MIP-based RTP optosensor also applicable to selective detecting of those nonphosphorescent analytes without the need for any inducers and derivatization. The new MIP-based RTP sensing protocol was applied to detect trace pentachlorophenol (PCP) in water samples without the interference of autofluorescence and scattering light of matrixes. The detection limit for PCP was 86 nM, and the precision for five replicate detections of 0.4 μM PCP was 2.8% (relative standard deviation). Polysubstituted pyrido[1,2-α]benzimidazole derivatives are efficiently produced in moderate yields in a novel one-pot, four-component reaction from pyridine or 3-picoline, chloroacetonitrile, malononitrile, and aromatic aldehyde in refluxing acetonitrile. The mechanism of this novel reaction was believed involving the formation of polysubstituted benzenes with subsequent substitution and annulation reaction of pyridine. All pyrido[1,2-α]benzimidazoles, polysubstituted benzenes, polysubstituted indoles, and some key reaction intermediates are characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, MS, IR spectra, and elemental analysis as well as X-ray crystallography. Ethanol oxidation on Pt is a typical multistep and multiselectivity heterogeneous catalytic process. A comprehensive understanding of this fundamental reaction would greatly benefit design of catalysts for use in direct ethanol fuel cells and the degradation of biomass-derived oxygenates. In this work, the reaction network of ethanol oxidation on different Pt surfaces, including close-packed Pt{111}, stepped Pt{211}, and open Pt{100}, is explored thoroughly with an efficient reaction path searching method, which integrates our new transition-state searching technique with periodic density functional theory calculations. Our new technique enables the location of the transition state and saddle points for most surface reactions simply and efficiently by optimization of local minima. We show that the selectivity of ethanol oxidation on Pt depends markedly on the surface structure, which can be attributed to the structure-sensitivity of two key reaction steps: (i) the initial dehydrogenation of ethanol and (ii) the oxidation of acetyl (CH3CO). On open surface sites, ethanol prefers C-C bond cleavage via strongly adsorbed intermediates (CH2CO or CHCO), which leads to complete oxidation to CO2. However, only partial oxidizations to CH3CHO and CH3COOH occur on Pt{111}. Our mechanism points out that the open surface Pt(100) is the best facet to fully oxidize ethanol at low coverages, which sheds light on the origin of the remarkable catalytic performance of Pt tetrahexahedra nanocrystals found recently. The physical origin of the structure-selectivity is rationalized in terms of both thermodynamics and kinetics. Two fundamental quantities that dictate the selectivity of ethanol oxidation are identified: (i) the ability of surface metal atoms to bond with unsaturated C-containing fragments and (ii) the relative stability of hydroxyl at surface atop sites with respect to other sites. This paper focuses on a detailed evaluation of commercially available immobilized lipases and simple monohydric alcohols for the production of alkyl esters from sunflower oil by enzymatic alcoholysis. Six lipases were tested with seven alcohols, including straight and branched-chain primary and secondary alcohols. The reactions were conducted in a batch stirred reaction vessel using stoichiometric amounts of substrafes under solvent-free conditions. Dramatic differences in alcoholysis performance were observed among the different lipases. For most of the alcohols, Novozym 435 produced the highest yield of FA alkyl esters, with yields well over 90% for methanol, absolute ethanol, and 1-propanol. Overall, 96% ethanol was the preferred alcohol for all lipases except Novozym 435, and ethanolysis reactions reached the maximal conversion efficiency. Increasing the water content in the system resulted in an increased degree of conversion for all lipases except Novozym 435. The secondary alcohol 2-propanol significantly reduced the alcoholysis reaction with all lipases; however, the branch-chain isobutanol was more advantageous than linear 1-butanol for Novozym 435, Lipozyme RM IM, and Lipase PS-C. Lipase could catalyze the ammonolysis of trimethylsilylmethyl acetate in organic solvents and Novozym 435 was the best biocatalyst for the reaction. The influences of some factors on the reaction were investigated. Cyclohexane, n -hexane and heptane were found to be suitable reaction media and ammonium carbamate was the best ammonium source. The optimal initial water activity, temperature and pH value were 0.55-0.75, 35°C and 6.5 respectively, under which a substrate conversion of 97.6% could be achieved after reaction for 140 h.
