The nuclear family model of cohabitation has become the norm in modernised Western societies. With the onset of the second demographic transition, with fertility decline and separations increase, other forms of cohabitation have appeared in the statistical nomenclature: childless couples, single persons, single-parent families became the focus of attention, other forms of cohabitation relegated in the 'complex households' category, considered a pre-transitional relic. In French Polynesia, however, it represents more than a quarter of households, i.e. 6.5 times more than in metropolitan France. At first sight, this over-representation of complex households in Polynesia could be explained by a different position in the demographic transitions, Polynesia being, according to this hypothesis, in an earlier phase of demographic transformations, relative to metropolitan France. However, in an archipelagic territory where schooling facilities, health establishments and the rare employment opportunities are extremely concentrated in the most central areas, migrating to attend school, find work and receive treatment is essential and co-residence of family members represents a primary resource. This article explores the reasons for such overrepresentation of the coresidence in complex household by studying both conflicting hypothesis of pre-transitional archaism and that of adaptation to the constraints of the territory, based on ethnographic data collected in the 1920s and 1960s and census data collected in the 21st century.

International audience; Since the 1980s, the articulation of public policies, particularly in European countries, has been characterised by a trend towards territorialisation, which equates to the differentiated application of national policies according to the territories. This trend raises the issue of equality of access to state benefits within a population, given the diversity of territorial realities. This is the issue that we propose to explore, based on the study of French social policies on ageing: the Personalized Allowance for Autonomy (APA).Based on an original method of trajectory analysis (the sequence analysis) and using administrative data on APA between 2004 and 2019, this article has a triple objective. Firstly, it presents an innovative methodology in the analysis of public policies. Secondly, from the point of view of the differences observed in the implementation of social assistance, it aims to distinguish between those attributable to the population' s characteristics and those resulting from the implementation by street-level bureaucrats and administrations. Finally, it draws a comprehensive territorial portrait of 16 years of deployment of APA in France. This article shows that with the increased number of recipients of this welfare policy instrument for supporting older people, territorial differences in the allocation of APA do not remain stable but change over time. Our study demonstrates the full relevance of sequence analysis for capturing the dynamics of social policies and reporting phenomena— here the way of influence of street level bureaucrats and/or administration on a state benefit — that are difficult to observe using other statistical methodologies.

Background Migrants account for 35% of HIV diagnoses in the European Union (ECDC/WHO 2014). Little is known about the impact of such a lifelong infection diagnosis on lives that are already disrupted by migration. In this paper, we assess the impact of HIV diagnosis on activity, union, well-being among African migrants living in France, the second group most affected by HIV after MSM. We compare it with the impact of the diagnosis of Hepatitis B, another lifelong infection affecting African migrants. Methods We use the ANRS PARCOURS survey, a retrospective life-event survey led in 2012–2013 in 74 health structures in Paris greater area which collected 926 life histories of Sub-Saharan migrants living with HIV and 779 with Hepatitis B. We modelled the probability year by year since 18 years of age until data collection to lose one’s activity, to experience a conjugal break up and degradation of well-being and we estimated the impact of migration and of HIV and Hepatitis B diagnoses on these probabilities, after adjustment on other factors, thanks to discrete-time logistic regressions. Results Migration entailed loss of activity and conjugal break up, though HIV diagnosis after migration did not statistically impact on these outcomes. Yet HIV diagnosis had a massive negative impact on well-being (aOR = 11.31 [4.64–27.56] for men and 5.75 [2.79–11.86] for women). This negative impact on well-being tended to diminish for persons diagnosed after 2004. The negative impact of HIV diagnosis on African migrants’ well-being seems to be attenuated in the last decade, which hints at a normalization of the subjective experience of HIV diagnosis.

International audience; This paper covers the topic of data collection and how to deal with respondent’s perceptions, both in general and in relation of their life-event history in particular. This key question is central to the analysis of fuzzy states. This chapter presents the question of subjectivity, comparing facts with perception, focusing on retrospective interpretation true several example: working career, marital processes, parental universe, household head status and gender, measuring perceptions in economics, from subjective poverty to subjective well-being. These examples shoe how integrating perceptions and qualitative explorations improve and help statistical categorisation.

- Abstract
This four-volume collection of over 140 original chapters covers virtually everything of interest to demographers, sociologists, and others. Over 100 authors present population subjects in ways that provoke thinking and lead to the creation of new perspectives, not just facts and equations to be memorized. The articles follow a theory-methods-applications approach and so offer a kind of'one-stop shop'that is well suited for students and professors who need non-technical summaries, such as political scientists, public affairs specialists, and others. Unlike shorter handbooks, Demography: Analysis and Synthesis offers a long overdue, thorough treatment of the field.Choosing the analytical method that fits the data and the situation requires insights that the authors and editors of Demography: Analysis and Synthesis have explored and developed. This extended examination of demographic tools not only seeks to explain the analytical tools themselves, but also the relationships between general population dynamics and their natural, economic, social, political, and cultural environments. Limiting themselves to human populations only, the authors and editors cover subjects that range from the core building blocks of population change--fertility, mortality, and migration--to the consequences of demographic changes in the biological and health fields, population theories and doctrines, observation systems, and the teaching of demography. The international perspectives brought to these subjects is vital for those who want an unbiased, rounded overview of these complex, multifaceted subjects. Topics to be covered:• Population Dynamics and the Relationship Between Population Growth and Structure• The Determinants of Fertility• The Determinants of Mortality• The Determinants of Migration• Historical and Geographical Determinants of Population• The Effects of Population on Health, Economics, Culture, and the Environment• Population Policies• Data Collection Methods and Teaching about Population Studies• All chapters share a common format• Each chapter features several cross-references to other chapters • Tables, charts, and other non-text features are widespread• Each chapter contains at least 30 bibliographic citations

Demography - Abstract
Bonvalet Catherine. Lelièvre Eva. - Mobility in France and moves to Paris since 1945: Paris - the filter This second paper (the first was published in Population) is based on a comparison of data from two surveys organized by INED and represents a detailed study of the conclusions that can be drawn from regional sources in a national context. The paper emphasizes regional peculiarities as well as the fundamental role played by the Paris area in the pattern of migration trends, and the economic and social structuring of the national area. The role of Paris as a "filter" is analyzed; the area attracts young provincial migrants, but quickly filters out some of them who leave, most often in order to return to their regions of origin. The family characteristics of residents are determined by differential migrations rates among couples and single persons, as well as by birth rates (the birth rate in Paris is the lowest both for natives and migrants). A comparison of the social as well as of the residential histories of individuals shows the close link that exists between geographical and social mobility. Paris is clearly the place to migrate to in order to achieve social success., Bonvalet Catherine, Lelièvre Eva. Demography - Abstract
Courgeau Daniel and Lelièvre Eva. — Nuptiality and Agriculture. This paper offers a longitudinal analysis of the relationship between marriage and leaving the agricultural sector, using data published by INED in its biographical survey of family, work and migration. The strategies of the two sexes seem to differ : — whereas leaving agriculture has no influence upon a woman's chances of marriage, marriage within this sector confines her to the land. Men's chances of marriage, however, are doubled if they leave the agricultural sector. Yet their marital status . scarcely influences their decision to leave agriculture. Various characteristics of these individuals are presented to illustrate these strategies., Courgeau Daniel et Lelièvre Eva. In: Population, 41ᵉ année, n°2, 1986. pp. 303-326.

Demography - Abstract
Boguszak Marek, Courgeau Daniel and Lelièvre Eva. — Constitution of the family and urbanization in Czechoslovakia : comparison with France. Using data from retrospective surveys, we analysed here the interactions between family life and migration to and from the town, in Czechoslovakia and France. These are the most important results : whereas in France most of those migrations to metropolitan concern singles, in Czechoslovakia this migration usually takes place between marriage and the birth of the first child. Fertility in both countries is reduced by this migration, but increased by a migration to less urban zones. We illustrate how migrants' characteristics (family origin, education, profession, etc.) affect both their family life and their migrations. The life event history methods used here proved very efficient in revealing these interactions and highlighting the differences in behaviour between the two populations., Boguszak Marek, Courgeau Daniel, Lelièvre Eva.
