Moisture damage (MD) in bituminous mixtures occurs due to the loss of cohesion in the bitumen or adhesion between the binder and aggregates. The existence of moisture may influence the bonding between aggregates and bitumen, which may affect the moisture susceptibility of the bituminous mix. Therefore, there is a need to understand the bonding-debonding properties and the moisture susceptibility of binders and mixes, at the material selection stage. Surface free energy (SFE) method is one of the proven techniques to quantify the moisture susceptibility of bituminous mixtures, by using contact angle (CA) determination of the component materials of the mix. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of hydrated lime (HL) on the moisture susceptibility of bituminous mixtures, with control (VG30) bitumen and pyro-oil modified bitumen (POMB) having different percentages of pyro oil, using the SFE approach. Also, the study compared the SFE characteristics of VG30 and POMB with and without the optimum content of HL. POMB binders were prepared by the addition of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pyro oil in percentages of 1, 3, and 5% in a control bitumen. HL was added as 20%, 25%, and 30% by weight of bitumen in VG30 and POMB bitumen. The aggregates used in the study were limestone, basalt, gravel, and their SFE components were directly considered from the literature. The sessile drop method was used to measure the CA of bitumen and, in turn, determine the various SFE parameters using Van Oss–Chaudhury–Good theory. The moisture susceptibility of mixtures with and without HL was evaluated and compared. From the results, the MD resistance of the bituminous mixtures with modified and unmodified bitumen was found to be increased after the optimum of HL, depending upon the type of aggregates used. Basalt has a 27.41%, 23.38%, and 10.48% greater energy ratio (ER) with POMB1/25, POMB3/25, and POMB5/30, respectively, than VG30/30, the highest ER in modified base bitumen. This indicates that HDPE pyro-oil treatment improves MD resistance for basalt. Whereas for limestone and gravel, VG30/30 gives a maximum value of ER as compared to any other combination of HL modified POMB. Titanium and titanium alloys are the prevailing dental implant materials owing to their favorable mechanical properties and biocompatibility, but how roughness dictates the biological response is still a matter of debate. In this study, laser texturing was used to generate eight paradigmatic roughened surfaces, with the aim of studying the early biological response elicited on MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts. Prior to cell tests, the samples underwent SEM analysis, optical profilometry, protein adsorption assay, and optical contact angle measurement with water and diiodomethane to determine surface free energy. While all the specimens proved to be biocompatible, supporting similar cell viability at 1, 2, and 3 days, surface roughness could impact significantly on cell adhesion. Factorial analysis and linear regression showed, in a robust and unprecedented way, that an isotropic distribution of deep and closely spaced valleys provides the best condition for cell adhesion, to which both protein adsorption and surface free energy were highly correlated. Overall, here the authors provide, for the first time, a thorough investigation of the relationship between roughness parameters and osteoblast adhesion that may be applied to design and produce new tailored interfaces for implant materials. Lignin, one of Earth's most abundant biopolymers, is rich in phenolic and aliphatic functional groups, offering significant potential for chemical modification. Technical lignin, a byproduct of the kraft process, is produced in large quantities annually and can be used to enhance the properties of polymer matrices such as polypropylene (PP). PP, a widely used nonpolar polymer, suffers from low surface free energy, leading to poor adhesion properties. Combining PP with polar, renewable-source polymers like lignin can improve these properties. This study investigates the direct acetylation of kraft lignin (KL) to improve its dispersion in the PP matrix and enhance wettability and adhesion. The acetylation of KL was confirmed through FTIR and DSC analyses. PP and acetylated KL (AKL) were combined and processed via continuous extrusion. The blends' thermal and mechanical properties, lignin dispersion, and wettability were evaluated. Additionally, PP and PP–lignin films were bonded to aluminized biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) for peel tests. Results showed increased surface free energy and improved adhesion, particularly in samples with AKL due to better dispersion. This direct acetylation route significantly enhances PP's surface free energy and adhesion, presenting a sustainable alternative to fossil-based materials and promoting the use of lignin, a renewable and low-cost polymer. The plasma electrolytic polishing (PEP) process on Q235 low-carbon steel anode in (NH4)2SO4 electrolyte was investigated, and its surface properties under different PEP conditions were evaluated. The surface roughness of PEP samples under different electrolyte concentrations, initial roughness, voltages and treating times were measured. The surface morphologies and compositions of typical PEP samples were analyzed, and their wettability and surface free energy under different polishing times were evaluated. It was found that the near-surface temperature of the steel sample raised quickly with increasing the voltage, and then remained at about 100°C after 200V, which is beneficial to keep the microstructure and mechanical properties of Q235 low-carbon steel. Under the parameters of 3.0wt.% (NH4)2SO4 aqueous solution and applied voltage of 200V, the 8min PEP treatment could reduce the surface roughness of Q235 low-carbon steel from 2.100μm to 0.437μm. In addition, the polishing efficiency was the highest in the initial PEP stage, meanwhile, it also increased with the increase of initial roughness of the sample. After the PEP treatment, the contact angle of water on low-carbon steel decreased, and its surface free energy was slightly reduced. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of airborne particle abrasion with different particles on the surface free energy, roughness, and biaxial flexural strength of a feldspathic ceramic by comparing it with hydrofluoric acid etching, the standard surface treatment, and polishing. Square-shaped feldspathic ceramic specimens (12 mm × 12 mm × 1.2 mm) were divided into subgroups as airborne particles abraded with alumina (AO3a, AO3b, AO25, AO50a, AO50b, AO90, AO110a, AO110b, AO120a, and AO120b), silica (SO50a, SO50b, SO100, and SO100/200), or nutshell granule (NS100/200), hydrofluoric acid etched, and polished (n = 12). Surface free energy (n = 5), roughness (n = 5), biaxial flexural strength (n = 12), and Weibull moduli (n = 12) were investigated. Data were evaluated with 1-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests, and possible correlations were investigated with Pearson's correlation (α = 0.05). SO100/200 mostly had lower surface free energy (p ≤ 0.011), and polishing and etching led to higher surface free energy than AO3a, AO3b, and AO120a (p ≤ 0.031). Polished, SO100, and SO50b specimens mostly had lower roughness and AO125 had the highest roughness (p ≤ 0.029). SO100/200 mostly had lower biaxial flexural strength (p ≤ 0.041), and etched specimens had higher biaxial flexural strength than AO120a, AO120b, and SO50b (p ≤ 0.043). AO3b had the highest (33.56) and AO120b had the lowest (11.8) Weibull modulus. There was a weak positive correlation between the surface free energy and the biaxial flexural strength (r = 0.267, p = 0.011). A larger particle size mostly resulted in higher roughness, which was also affected by the particle shape. Most of the test groups had similar biaxial flexural strength to that of the hydrofluoric acid-etched group. The primary focus of this study is to assess the stripping resistance of bitumen when partially replaced with rice-straw biomass-based lignin from bio-ethanol industry residue. Moreover, the study examines the relationship between the chemical and physicochemical (surface free energy or SFE) properties of lignin-substituted bitumen blends and their stripping potential. Two distinct lignin materials were examined: fermentation residue (FRL), a by-product directly obtained from the bio-ethanol industry, and Isolated Lignin (IL), which was extracted from FRL through an alkali-acid precipitation process. These materials were partially substituted at dosages of 5%, 10%, and 15% by weight of bitumen. Test results indicated that the addition of lignin to bitumen led to a change in SFE, with an increase in the polar component and a reduction in the dispersive component. The rolling bottle test revealed that bitumen blends containing IL and FRL displayed superior stripping resistance compared to the base bitumen, retaining more coating after testing. This enhancement in performance was attributed to the increased heteroatom content [sum of nitrogen (N), oxygen (O), and sulfur (S)] and higher IS═O and IC═O indices upon adding the lignin materials. While the energy ratio obtained from the SFE alone did not entirely explain the stripping resistance of lignin-substituted bitumen, the presence of heteroatoms like N, O, and S, and the presence of silicon (Si) and associated functional groups played a substantial role in the chemical adhesion of these bitumen blends to aggregates. In current research, Makrofol HS polymeric films have been utilized to evaluate the alterations in the surface properties under an atmospheric-pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma source. Upon DBD plasma exposure with various exposure durations ranging from 10 min to 120 min, the structural, surface wettability, surface free energy, surface roughness, and hardness features of Makrofol HS films have been studied and analyzed using different techniques. The FTIR spectra demonstrated that small changes in the band intensities correspond to the C-O-C as well as C=O bonds. Further, the changes in the absorption bands are correlated to the treatment time, leading to two critical processes, degradation, and crosslinking. The results of surface wettability displayed that the liquids' contact angle decreased from 84 ± 3o, 77 ± 3o and 62 ± 2o for water, glycerol, and dimethyl to 45 ± 1o, 42 ± 1o, and 36 ± 1o for untreated and treated samples at the highest treatment time, respectively. Also, the surface free energy significantly amended with increasing plasma exposure time. This modification in the treated surface indicates the increase in the polar groups on the treated surfaces, which then become hydrophilic surfaces. The samples' surface roughness parameters Ra, Rq, and Rz increased from 0.057 ± 0.003, 0.084 ± 0.004 and 0.366 ± 0.02 mm for untreated samples to 1.463 ± 0.073, 1.707 ± 0.085, and 6.839 ± 0.34 mm for treated samples at the highest treatment time, respectively. The Vickers hardness measurements showed an increase in the Vickers hardness from 12.31 ± 0.61 kgf/mm2 for the untreated sample to 44.89 ± 2.24 kgf/mm2 for the treated sample at the highest duration. Components of surface free energy (SFE) are critical to reveal the interactions between liquids and solids, and many interface phenomena can be interpreted by using these components. However, calculation of SFE components precisely with semiempirical approximations requires special expertise in surface science field. In this study, various machine learning algorithms (SVM, GPR) were utilized to construct models for the prediction of SFE from published data sets including contact angle values of water, formamide and diiodomethane. While creating the model data set, care was taken to choose different solid surface types. To objectively assess the validity of the constructed models, the tenfold cross-validation method was used for Case 1 and Case 2, respectively. For performance evaluations, R2, adjusted R2, RMSE and N-RMSE values of each model were calculated. The SVM and GPR models performed extremely well in the calculation of SFE components based on acid–base approach with regression coefficient values of about 0.99. In addition, estimation of the SFE components from experimental data that were not used in model training was made with the created MATLAB GUI interface. The γ S LW and γ S Tot parameters were predicted more accurately than the γ S + , γ S - and γ S AB components. The Case 1 model was more successful, especially in surface energy calculations of polymer-based surfaces. This study investigated the efficacy of three spray adjuvants (Coerce, Wetcit, and Silwet408) in enhancing dinotefuran permeation in rice leaves. Different concentrations of these adjuvants were tested using an external standard method. The rice leaf surface was analyzed by using the van Oss–Chaudhury–Good method to establish a link between surface free energy (SFE) and dinotefuran permeation. All of the adjuvants effectively increased dinotefuran permeation in rice leaves, with the highest permeation of 8.496 mg/kg achieved using Wetcit at 1000 mg/L. The SFE of the rice leaf surface was determined to be 29.28 mJ/m2. A notable correlation was observed between the energy difference (the SFE of the pesticide liquid versus the SFE of the rice leaf surface) and permeation. Various fitting methods, including linear, exponential, logarithmic, polynomial, and power methods, were applied. Polynomial fitting demonstrated the highest coefficient of determination (R2 > 0.9000). The relationship between the permeation (y) and energy difference (Δγ) conformed to the polynomial equation y = aΔγ2 + bΔγ + c, where a, b, and c are constants. This model provides a predictive tool for the optimal dosage of spray adjuvants according to target plant characteristics, enhancing the understanding of the interaction between pests and pesticides. The continuous growth of industrial solid waste production has generated many environmental problems. We evaluated the potential of industrial solid waste as a substitute filler in asphalt mastic, with the aim of increasing the use of sustainable road construction materials. In this study, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the oxide composition and micromorphology of limestone (LS), red mud (RM), steel slag (SS), and ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS). Four asphalt mastics containing LS, RM, SS, and GGBFS with a filler-to-binder weight ratio of one were prepared. An evaluation of the rheology and wetting of the solid-waste-filler asphalt mastic was conducted using a frequency sweep, temperature sweep, linear amplitude sweep (LAS), multiple stress creep and recovery (MSCR), and surface free energy (SFE) methods. The results showed that SS increased the complex modulus, elastic component of the asphalt mastic and decreased the nonrecoverable creep compliance at stress levels of 0.1 and 3.2 kPa, which improved the rutting resistance of the asphalt mastic and reduced deformation under high-temperature conditions. The RM and GGBFS increased the fatigue performance of the asphalt mastic under strain loading, enhanced its fatigue life, and maintained good performance under long-term loading. The dispersive component of the SFE parameter of the solid-waste-filler asphalt mastic was larger than the polar component for the largest share of the surface energy composition. The SFE of the asphalt mastic prepared from the industrial solid-waste filler was reduced; however, the difference was insignificant compared to the limestone asphalt mastic. Solid-waste-filler asphalt mastic has performance characteristics, and its actual application can be based on different performance characteristics to select an appropriate solid-waste filler. The article presents the exploration of flax and hemp fibers' surface free energy depending on the chemical composition of the fiber, which is closely related to the plant variety and the method of extracting the fiber. For this purpose, tests of the surface free energy (SFE), evaluation of the percentage content of individual fiber components and FTIR analyses were conducted. The research was carried out with the use of fibrous materials prepared in three different ways: 1. To analyze the effect of subsequent stages of flax fibers refining process on chemical composition and SFE, 2. to explore the dependence of fiber SFE on hemp variety, the water-retting hemp fibers were used, 3. To evaluate the influence of the retting method of hemp fibers BIAŁOBRZESKIE variety on SFE, the fibers extracted with the use of dew and water retting were used as the research material. The study confirmed that the content of individual components in the fiber influenced its sorption capacity and therefore determined its hydrophilic properties. The values of Pearson's linear correlation coefficients determined in the statistical analysis proved that the surface free energy was strongly correlated with the content of individual components in the fibers. Understanding the wettability characteristics of bast fibers will allow modeling the properties of products made of these fibers and designing surface modification processes in order to obtain specific functionality of textile products, depending on their intended utilization. The aim of this work was to examine the influence of polycaprolactone (PCL) as a soft segment (SS) on the surface properties of polyurethane networks (PUNs). Five PUNs with different SS content (from 10 to 50 wt%) were prepared using Boltorn® aliphatic hyperbranched polyester of the second pseudo generation and isophorone diisocyanate as components of hard segments. The structure, hydrophobicity, wettability, and swelling behavior of these PUNs were investigated. Primarily, the obtained results showed that properties of prepared PUNs strongly depend on the content of SS that is, PCL. It has been established that the increase of SS content reduced the degree of hydrogen bonding in PUNs. Also, the increase of the SS content in PUNs induced appearance of more pronounced microphase separated morphology, better hydrophobicity and non‐wetting with diiodomethane. Simultaneously, the increase of the SS content led to the decrease of contact angles with formamide, and surface free energy of the prepared PUNs. The new developed technique, CO 2 -alkaline-water two-phase displacing gas and wetting coal (CADW), can obviously improve coal seam water injection effects. In this work, the microscopic seepage mechanism of CO 2 -alkaline-water in coalbed and its influence on coal wettability were investigated in detail. The results indicated that, the CADW measure could clearly increase coal wettability. After the CADW, the specific surface area of LS and ZX coals increased by 33.44%, 14.61% and the total pore volume increased by 121.60%, 19.48% respectively. Besides, the contact angle of two coals decreased by 25.30% and 6.62% severally. Further investigation showed that, the polar force increased evidently after using the CADW. As a result, the surface free energy of LS and ZX coals calculated by the Owens-Wendt method increased by 13.82% and 6.03%, that acquired by the Van Oss model increased by 10.26% and 6.32%, respectively. In addition, the CADW could obviously increase contents of hydrophilic groups in coal. The content of -OH in two coals increased by 20.09% and 32.10%, the C O density increased by 27.27% and 70.77% respectively. This study presents a comprehensive investigation into the enhanced performance of photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells through the decoration of CdSe and Al-doped CdSe nanoparticles on ZnO rods. The capacitance-voltage study reveals that Al doping increases the donor concentration and improves minority carrier diffusion time while reducing dispersion at grain boundaries. Spectral response analysis demonstrates that CdSe/ZnO/FTO and Al: CdSe/ZnO/FTO photoanodes exhibit maximum short-circuit currents at a wavelength of 675 nm, corresponding to a bandgap of 1.84 eV. Al doping shifts the spectral response to longer wavelengths, indicating an estimated bandgap of 1.72 eV. Furthermore, the effect of surface free energy and polarity on the developed photoanode materials is investigated. CdSe and Al-doped CdSe nano particles on ZnO/FTO surfaces exhibit reduced water contact angles, indicating improved wettability. The surface free energy decreases with Al doping, potentially influencing electrolyte absorption and the interaction between photoanodes and electrolytes. The presence of polar hydroxyl (-OH) groups and Al+++ ions on the Al: CdSe nano particles contributes to their impact on surface free energy. These findings provide valuable insights for optimizing PEC cell performance by manipulating doping concentrations and surface characteristics. In order to study the adhesion properties of fast-melting SBS-modified asphalt (SBS-T) at the interface with aggregates, the contact angles of three dosages of SBS-T asphalt with three liquids (distilled water, glycerol, and formamide) were determined by the sessile drop method based on surface free energy theory. The evaluation indexes such as cohesion, asphalt–aggregate adhesion, stripping work and energy ratio of the asphalt were analyzed and the adhesion properties of the asphalt–aggregate system were investigated with the help of micromechanical methods. The results indicate that SBS-T can improve the adhesion properties of the asphalt. Furthermore, as the dosage of the modifier increases, the cohesion work, adhesion work, and energy ratio of the SBS-T asphalt exhibit a similar rise. As the spalling work reduces and the adhesion between asphalt and aggregate improves, it is noteworthy that the SBS-T asphalt–aggregate system exhibits superior adhesion performance compared to the SBS-modified asphalt–aggregate system, despite the same dosage. This paper investigates if the polar groups induced by a plasma treatment can increase the lap shear strength of laser-joined metal and plastic hybrids. Optimal laser joining parameters for cold-rolled AISI304–polyamide 6.6 and sandblasted AISI304–polypropylene hybrids were developed at 2.85 MPa and 4.22 MPa, respectively. The surface free energy was doubled for all used plasma gases to a value of ca. 80 mN m−1 at 180 s. The plasma-treated samples were joined and tested. The arithmetic means of the plasma-treated hybrids' lap shear strength with polyamide 6.6 varied slightly, but all measured values were within the range of the untreated samples. Residue on the sheared metal samples indicated covalent bonds between AISI304 and polyamide 6.6. The lap shear strengths of the plasma-treated polypropylene hybrids were significantly reduced between −30.8% and −53.3%, depending on the used plasma gas. This was attributed to the over-aging and development of low-molecular-weight oxidized materials, which led to a weak boundary layer. No residue of polypropylene was found on treated or untreated lap shear samples. No correlation between the surface free energy and lap shear strength could be found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of short-term aging (STA) and long-term aging (LTA) on moisture damage mechanisms were investigated using mechanical and thermodynamic methods. PG58-22 and PG64-16 asphalt binders modified with Dodecylamine (DA) and Wetfix (WT) additives and limestone and granite aggregates were used. The moisture sensitivity was assessed using the indirect tensile strength (ITS) test via the modified Lottman test and the surface free energy (SFE) method. As asphalt binder becomes harder due to aging, ITS values increase in dry conditions. However, ITS values decrease due to the texture and mineralogical properties of aggregates, the reduction of mastic cohesion and asphalt binder-aggregate adhesion because of water infiltration and weakening of the mixture in wet conditions. The tensile strength ratio (TSR) test revealed that TSR values decrease due to aging. The cohesion free energy of the PG64-16 asphalt binder increased by 8.9% in the STA state and by 29.8% in the LTA state compared to the unaged state. This rise in PG58-22 was about the same as that in PG64-16. Asphalt binder aging in all the samples reduced the adhesion energy. With the purpose of further reducing surface free energy to achieve better anti-bacterial adhesion effect of fluorinated dimethacrylate (FDMA)/tricyclo (5.2.1.0) decanedimethanol diacrylate (SR833s) based dental resin composites (DS), 1H,1H-heptafluorobutyl methacrylate (FBMA) was used to partially replace SR933s as reactive diluent. According to the degree of substitution, the obtained resin composites were marked as DSF-1 (20 wt.% of SR833s was replaced by FBMA), DSF-2 (40 wt.% of SR833s was replaced by FBMA), and DSF-3 (60 wt.% of SR833s was replaced by FBMA). Bisphenol A glycidyl dimethacrylate (Bis-GMA)/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) based resin composite (BT) was used as control. The influence of FBMA concentration on double bond conversion (DC), contact angle, surface free energy, anti-bacterial adhesion effect against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans), volumetric shrinkage (VS) and shrinkage stress (SS), flexural strength (FS) and modulus (FM), water sorption (WS) and solubility (SL) were investigated. The results showed that FBMA addition could reduce surface free energy from 44.6 mN/m for DS to 32.9 mN/m for DSF-3, and lead to better anti-bacterial adhesion effect (the amounts of adherent bacteria decreased from 2.03 × 105 CFU/mm2 for DS to 6.44 × 104 CFU/mm2 for DSF-3). The FBMA had no negative effects on DC, VS, SS, WS, and SL. Too high a concentration of FBMA reduced FS and FM before water immersion, but the values were still higher than those of BT. Stone matrix asphalt (SMA) mixtures are the most resistant type of asphalt mixtures today in which the aggregate skeleton bears the bulk load. In this study, the effect of nano hydrated lime (NHL) on the moisture sensitivity of SMA mixtures was investigated. To examine the effect of NHL, the surface free energy (SFE) method and the dynamic modulus (DM) test were applied under wet and dry conditions on mixtures constructed with limestone and granite aggregates. The SFE results indicated that the granite aggregates had a greater polar component and limestone aggregates had a higher non-polar component which shows their higher moisture resistance. The adhesion free energy (AFE) results showed that the adhesion of base bitumen and limestone aggregate was higher, and using NHL improved the AFE values. The results of DM tests indicated that as the load cycles raised, the wet to dry DM ratio reduced and using NHL increased this ratio. The reduction slope of the DM ratio in samples constructed with granite aggregates showed a faster trend compared to limestone aggregates, and using NHL improved the resistance of SMA mixtures constructed with granite aggregates to moisture more than limestone aggregates. The subject of the research presented in this paper was the evaluation of the technology of surface preparation of steel samples in terms of anti-adhesion and mechanical properties through the use of PFA coatings. Such coatings are used in many industries, e.g. in the manufacture and operation of metal moulds used, for example, in the production of resinous components. The specimens used in the study, which represented the surface of the moulds, were made from DC01 sheet. Six variants of release coating technology were used, differing in the number of technological operations and parameters. In the final stage, appropriate test methods were used to assess the energy properties of the coatings produced, the mechanical properties in terms of deformation of the supporting structure and the mechanical properties in terms of the effects on the coating itself. The scope of the research made it possible to determine the main properties that the manufactured coatings have in terms of their future practical applications. The results obtained for the surface free energy determined from the measurement of the surface wetting angle, the mechanical properties obtained from the three-point bending test and the evaluation of the surface quality of the coatings subjected to compressive and tensile deformations in the bending test, as well as the functional properties of the coatings in terms of their durability and adhesion determined in scratch tests, showed that the best characteristics were obtained for variant 6. This variant consisted of sequentially, after the initial stage, applying a primer layer and drying it for 15 minutes at 250 °C, applying a PFA layer to the component at 150 °C and then drying it for 15 minutes at 200 °C and curing it for 20 minutes at 380 °C. An additional layer of PFA was then applied and dried for 15 minutes at 200 °C and cured for 20 minutes at 340 °C. In addition, a long annealing for 3 hours at 340 °C was applied in a given variant. The surface roughness, surface free energy (SFE) of composites, and composite wettability by dental adhesives are determining factors in achieving a strong and durable adhesion (e.g., composite repair, luting adhesively bonded indirect restorations). In this study, the SFE of one nanohydrid and two bulk-fill composites was investigated in relation to the wetting ability of five different dental adhesives. The profilometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurement justified that the sandblasting produced a significantly rough surface in which the different filler amounts, filler distribution, and resin-filler ratio participated. The SFE of the tested composite was between 45.65 and 49.07 mJ/m2 regardless of surface treatment. Despite the similarity in SFE, the adhesives wet the surface of the composites in different ways that were between 16.01° and 35.10°. The contact angle of solvent-free dental adhesive was lower due to sandblasting supporting the micromechanical retention. Based on our results, it was found that sandblasting, the most frequently recommended surface treatment, does not change the surface energy but causes a change in the contact angle, which can be explained by the different surface tension of the dental adhesives. The pH‐sensitive membranes have been extensively used in various fields. Through the incorporation of specific functional groups on pH‐sensitive molecules, diverse surface energies and degrees of wettability can be achieved at different pH values. In this study, we transformed pH‐sensitive copolymers into nanofibrillated membranes to increase their sensitivity to pH in terms of the contact angle formed by liquid droplets on their surface. Because N,N‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) contains an amino group, it is sensitive to acidic and alkaline environments. Moreover, to enhance the functionality, we selected styrene and methyl methacrylate (MMA) for random copolymerization with DMAEMA. We then used anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) templates to process the two copolymers into biomimetic fibrillated membranes. The contact angles between various‐pH aqueous droplets and different membranes were measured. Our results indicated that when the droplets were alkaline, the contact angle on the nanofibrillated membranes was large. When the pH of the droplets was decreased, the contact angle also decreased. In addition, the membranes were found to be reusable after being tested, washed, and dried. The surface free energy of nanofibrillated membranes with different molar feed ratios was also investigated in this study by using the model of Owens, Wendt, Rabel and Kaelble. [Display omitted] Interfacial interactions of nanoparticles (NPs) in colloids are greatly influenced by the NP surface free energy (SFE). Due to the intrinsic physical and chemical heterogeneity of the NP surface, measuring SFE is nontrivial. The use of direct force measurement methods, such as colloidal probe atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM), have been proven to be effective for the determination of SFE on relatively smooth surfaces, but fail to provide reliable measurements for rough surfaces generated by NPs. Here, we developed a reliable approach to determine the SFE of NPs by adopting Persson's contact theory to include the effect of surface roughness on the measurements in CP-AFM experiments. We obtain the SFE for a range of materials varying in surface roughness and surface chemistry. The reliability of the proposed method is verified by the SFE determination of polystyrene. Subsequently, the SFE of bare and functionalized silica, graphene oxide, and reduced graphene oxide were quantified and validity of the results was demonstrated. The presented method unlocks the potential of CP-AFM as a robust and reliable method of the SFE determination of nanoparticles with a heterogeneous surface, which is challenging to obtain with conventionally implemented experimental techniques. Purpose: The surface properties like roughness, wettability and surface free energy are important for utility properties of traditional and flowable dental restorative composites, due to their role in plaque formation, discoloration, mechanical wear or adhesion and bonding. The goal of our work was to assess the surface free energy (SFE) and the surface roughness (Ra) of three commercial flowable dental composites: everX Flow (bulk), everX Flow (dentin) and Flow-Art. Methods: Surface roughness, contact angle and surface free energy were determined for tested composites. Two surface states (control and roughened) were compared. Roughness was measured with the use of the 3D optical profilometer. The contact angle (CA) was determined through the sessile drop method with the use of four different probing liquids. This enabled to apply two surface free energy approaches (Owens-Wendt (O-W) and van Oss-Chaudhury-Good (LWAB)). Additionally, Zisman's approach (γC) was used. Results: The water contact angle values were similar for Flow-Art (67.56 ± 1.49°) and everX Flow (bulk) (68.94 ± 2.72°) compared to higher value for everX Flow (dentin) (74.39 ± 2.05°). SFE was in the range from 43 to 50 mJ/m² for O-W and from 47 to 62 mJ/m² for LWAB. The γC was from 37 to 45 mJ/m2. Conclusions: Roughening composites' surface influenced on increasing the CA value. All approaches of surface free energy calculations provide useful data for predicting interactions between flowable composites and dental tissues. Tested composites showed good wetting for initial state of surface after polymerization. These influence on better adhesion of the material to the bonding system during dental restoration. Interface phenomena that occur at the solid–liquid interface, such as wettability, adsorption, and particle aggregation, depend on the kind and magnitude of the solid surface free energy and electrokinetic properties found in water solutions. These phenomena are crucial for textile dyeing, finishing, and care. They characterize the material surface and change with different material pretreatment and finishing. In this paper, electrokinetic potential, isoelectric point, point of zero charge, a specific amount of surface charge and surface free energy of raw, enzymatically scoured, bleached, and finished cotton fabrics were investigated. Electrokinetic potential was measured by a streaming potential method and a specific quantity of surface charge by the back-titration method. For determination of the solid surface free energy components, the thin-layer wicking and contact-angle methods were used. The use of modern materials in sports, in terms of chemical composition and surface texture, entails both progress in results and an increasing discrepancy in the technical parameters of the equipment used. This paper aims to demonstrate the differences between balls admitted to a league and world championships in composition, surface texture, and the influence of these parameters on the water polo game. This research compared two new balls produced by top companies producing sports accessories (Kap 7 and Mikasa). To obtain the goal, the measurement of the contact angle, analysis of the material using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and optical microscopic evaluation were used. The analysis of the surface free energy shows significant differences (Kap 7 32.16 mJ/m2, Mikasa 36.48 mJ/m2). In the case of both balls, anisotropies of the structure of the furrows were observed, however, the Mikasa ball is slightly more homogeneous than the Kap 7 ball. The obtained results from the analysis of the contact angle, as well as the composition and real feedback from the players, indicated the need to standardize the material aspect of the regulations so that the sports results are repeatable every time. The purpose of this study was to characterize physicochemical properties and investigate anti-bacterial adhesion effect of dental resins containing fluorinated monomers. Fluorinated dimethacrylate FDMA was mixed with commonly used reactive diluent triethylene- glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) and fluorinated diluent 1 H,1 H-heptafluorobutyl methacrylate (FBMA) separately at a mass ratio of 60 wt./40 wt. to prepare fluorinated resin systems. Double bond conversion (DC), flexural strength (FS) and modulus (FM), water sorption (WS) and solubility (SL), contact angle and surface free energy, surface element concentration, and anti-adhesion effect against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) were investigated according to standard or referenced methods. 2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloy-loxypropyl)-phenyl]propane (Bis-GMA)/TEGDMA (60/40, wt./wt.) was used as control. Both fluorinated resin systems had higher DC than Bis-GMA based resin (p < 0.05); compared with Bis-GMA based resin (FS, FDMA/TEGDMA resin system had higher FS (p < 0.05) and comparable FM (p > 0.05), while FDMA/FBMA resins system had lower FS and FM (p < 0.05). Both fluorinated resin systems had lower WS and SL than Bis-GMA based resin (p < 0.05), and FDMA/TEGDMA resin system had the lowest WS (p < 0.05) in all experimental resin systems. Only FDMA/FBMA resin system showed lower surface free energy than Bis-GMA based resin (p < 0.05). When the surface was smooth, FDMA/FBMA resin system had lower amount of adherent S. mutans than Bis-GMA based resin (p < 0.05), while after the surface became roughness, FDMA/FBMA resin system had comparable amount of adherent S. mutans as Bis-GMA based resin (p > 0.05). Resin system prepared exclusively with fluorinated methacrylate monomers reduced the S. mutans adhesion due to their increased hydrophobicity and decreased surface energy., while flexural properties of it should be improved. Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) as one of the most important porous carbon materials are widely used in many applications that involve rapid adsorption and low-pressure loss, including air purification, water treatment, and electrochemical applications. For designing such fibers for the adsorption bed in gas and aqueous phases, in-depth comprehension of the surface components is crucial. However, achieving reliable values remains a major challenge due to the high adsorption affinity of ACFs. To overcome this problem, we propose a novel approach to determine London dispersive components ( γ S L ) of the surface free energy of ACFs by inverse gas chromatography (IGC) technique at an infinite dilution. Our data reveal the γ S L values at 298 K for bare carbon fibers (CFs) and the ACFs to be 97 and 260–285 mJ·m−2, respectively, which lie in the regime of secondary bonding of physical adsorption. Our analysis indicates that these are impacted by micropores and defects on the carbon surfaces. Comparing the γ S L obtained by the traditional Gray's method, our method is concluded as the most accurate and reliable value for the hydrophobic dispersive surface component of porous carbonaceous materials. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of an ultraviolet (UV) curable coating material on denture base resin. The results of the three-point bending test showed no significant difference between treated and untreated specimens, suggesting that the UV curable coating material did not compromise the physical strength of denture base resin. The surface free energy measurement and the surface analysis with atomic force microscopy revealed superhydrophilicity and a regularly arranged structure on the coating surface, improving wettability. Moreover, untreated specimens were significantly discolored in the staining test. However, specimens treated with the UV curable coating material showed no significant difference in color with slight staining, suggesting excellent antifouling ability. The surface free energy of wood is an important property that influences later manufacturing process, such as wood gluing and finishing. Sodium silicate modifications of poplar wood inevitably alter wood's surface free energy. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of various impregnation times on the resulting surface free energy of radial and tangential sections of poplar wood specimens. The contact angles of standard probe liquids (i.e. distilled water, diiodomethane, formamide) on the surface of the wood were measured by contact angle goniometer, and a geometric average method and acid–base interaction method were applied to calculate and analyze the changes in the surface free energy. In addition, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to analyze the changes in the functional groups on the wood surface; after finishing the wood surface with water-based or oil-based paint, the paint film adhesion properties were also evaluated. The results indicate that sodium silicate modification can effectively improve the surface wettability and surface free energy of poplar wood. The modification treatment gradually creates hydrophilic groups (e.g. hydrogen bonds, free hydroxyl groups) on the wood surface, and their contents increase with increasing impregnation time. Additionally, by introducing Si-O–C moieties, the polarity, dispersion, and acid–base components of the wood surface all increase to varying degrees. Finally, the sodium silicate modification treatment worsens the adhesion of the paint films on the wood surface, although not to a significant extent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The wettability and surface free energy of diamonds are crucial for their applications. In this study, polycrystalline boron-doped diamond (PBDD) films with different boron doping concentrations were prepared, and the effect of the boron doping concentration on the wettability and surface free energy (SFE) of the film was investigated. The SFEs of the PBDD films were investigated by employing the surface tension component approach and the equation-of-state approach. The investigation suggested that the alternative formulation of Berthelot's rule, the Lifshitz-van der Waals/acid-base (van Oss) approach, and the Owens-Wendt-Kaelble approach were suitable for estimating the SFEs of PBDD films, whereas the Fowkes approach, Berthelot's (geometric mean) combining rule, and Antonow's rule could not provide reliable results. Results showed that the SFEs of PBDD films increased with increasing boron doping concentration, and the SFEs were 43.26–49.66 mJ/m2 (Owens-Wendt-Kaelble approach), 42.89–52.26 mJ/m2 (Lifshitz-van der Waals/acid-base), and 44.38–48.73 mJ/m2 (alternative formulation of Berthelot's rule). The objective of this study was to determine the polar and dispersive surface free-energy (SFE) components of the central layer of corrugated paperboards, which are made of recycled fibres. The polar and dispersive components of, and the total, SFE (also known as interfacial energy) were calculated from the contact angles of water and diiodomethane liquids on recycled cellulose sheets. The total SFE of the middle component layers of two different grammages which comprised recycled fibres ranged from 47.9 mN/m to 51.05 mN/m. The contribution of the polar component to the total surface free energy of the two types of sheets ranged from 8.6 mN/m to 12.6 mN/m. This polar contribution was significantly lower than that of water. Plywood usage has been increasing recently in the building and furniture industry due to its outstanding surface and resistance properties. Although it has many advantages, the flammability of plywood needs to be improved with fire-retardant chemicals. However, these chemicals which improve panels against burning can be differently influenced many properties of panels. This study aimed to investigate the surface roughness, wettability, and surface free energy of the veneers treated with some fire-retardant chemicals and to determine the changes in the mechanical properties of plywood. The beech, poplar, alder, and pine veneers were used as wood species whilst zinc borate, borax, monoammonium phosphate, and ammonium sulfate were used as fire-retardant chemicals in this study. The surface roughness and contact angle measurements were performed to determine the surface properties of veneers, and then the surface free energy values were calculated. The bonding and bending strength of the plywood panels produced from these veneers were determined according to the relevant standards. As a result of the study, the surface free energy values of veneers with lower contact angles and smoother surfaces were found to be higher. It was also determined that the bonding strength values of plywood panels produced from veneers with high surface energies were also high. Generally, the untreated veneers had higher surface free energy values than the treated veneers. Among the fire-retardant chemicals, zinc borate caused the highest surface free energy values in the beech and alder veneers while borax exhibited the highest values in the poplar and pine veneers. We formulated and experimentally proved a hypothesis on the causes of dispersion (puffing and microexplosion) of binary fuel droplets, including those in the composition of gel fuels. This hypothesis is based on the concepts of wetting thermodynamics and the theory of the two-component surface energy of substances and materials. An effective and reliable criterion was established that allowed the assessment of the possibility of the onset of puffing and microexplosion during the high-temperature heating of binary liquids. Microexplosions were found to occur only when isothermal conditions were necessarily reached at the liquid–liquid interface during the mixing of mutually insoluble components, provided that one component had to be polar, and the second had to be dispersive. Graphene has become an intensive research field of study in the material science due to its peculiar properties and various applications. Particularly, it is considered as the thinnest 2D material, which is used widely in many devices, and hence, this involves its interaction with supporting substrates; thus, free surface energy of graphene is very essential for its miscellaneous application in our life. Here, in this report, we present the measuring results of static contact angle of microscale liquid droplets adsorbed on graphene-coated copper and silicon substrates at room temperature to calculate the graphene surface free energy and its wettability. Both copper- and silicon-coated substrates increase the static water contact angle values, indicating hydrophobicity of graphene layers. On the other hand, variation of strength of aqueous ionic solution, sodium chloride solution, does not change the static water contact angle, indicating minor importance of polar component of surface free energy of graphene layers. For few layers of graphene, up to three, the graphene surface free energy is controlled by the Cassie state, while for more than three layers, the surface exhibits the Wenzel state of wetting. Bamboo scrimber refers to a lignocellulosic structural material, which is usually attacked by water, ultraviolet radiation and fungus. Surface coating is an effective way to protect it, and its coating properties depend on surface wettability. In this study, the surface wettability of bamboo scrimbers with varying resin content was investigated via the comprehensive analysis of surface roughness, surface contact angle, surface free energy, surface chemical composition and coating properties. The resultant scrimbers had a similar profile with low roughness. Their surface was hydrophilic, but the hydrophilicity decreased with the increase in resin content. High resin content gave rise to low total free energy, in which the Lifshitz–van der Waals component was dominant and it decreased with the increasing resin content. Meanwhile, the ratio of the electron-accepting component to the electron-donating component becomes higher. This was due to the decreasing hydrophilic groups (e.g., -OH and -COOH groups) and the increasing oxygen-free groups (e.g., C-H and -CH2 groups) on the scrimber surface. The resin content affected the adhesion by decreasing the surface wettability, but the coating adhesion still reached the level of 2 for all bamboo scrimbers. The aim of this research was to analyze the interfacial properties between the surfaces of mechanically and electrochemically treated aluminium substrates and the printed coatings modified by the addition of silicon dioxide (SiO 2) and titanium dioxide (TiO 2) nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were added to the printing inks in various concentrations with the scope to optimize the interface properties of the prints for outdoor applications. The surface, as well as the structural and mechanical properties of the printed coatings were evaluated. Various methods were employed to measure and analyze the surface and interfacial properties of aluminium and coatings. Surface microphotographs and the roughness of the treated aluminium substrates were examined, the surface free energy of the aluminium and the coatings as well as the adhesion properties were calculated, and the thickness and optical density of the coatings were measured. Considering that the treated aluminium samples prepared for this research had quite textured and different surfaces, the contact angles used for the calculation of surface free energy were calculated with and without Wenzel model to obtain detailed information about the interactions between the surface of aluminium samples and the printed modified coatings. The results showed that the type of treatment of aluminium substrates as well as the modification of the printing inks have a significant influence on the adhesion and surface properties of the coatings considered. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that the produced nano-modified coatings can be used as printed coatings or as customized primers for applying various types of inks and coatings. A simple and general method has been developed to calculate the surface free energy of crystalline tungsten nanoparticles [NP] and nanostructures [NS]. The model takes into account the size, structure, and shape of nanosolids (NPs/NSs). The size-dependent volume and surface-packing fractions are also considered. Both NPs and NSs show size, structure, and shape dependence of the surface free energy (SFE, γ ). γ decreases as the size decreases for spherical NP. As the shape is deformed from spherical, γ shows opposite behaviors for NPs and NSs, where it increases for NSs. The model also suggests a novel, theoretical method to predict the structural transition in elements from BCC to FCC or vice versa. As a study case, the model has been applied to tungsten (W). The SFE of a W spherical NP of 0.192 eV/Å2 has been found to drop to 0.150 eV/Å2 at ultrasmall size for both FCC and BCC. On the other hand, the SFE increases to values ranging between 0.18 to 0.20 eV/Å2 for shape deformation factors ranging between 1.512 and 2.936. The results were compared with previous theoretical predictions for other transition metals and show a complete agreement with the general behavior of this study for tungsten spherical and non-spherical nano-tungsten. In order to understand the surface wettability of leaves of different crops and improve the efficiency of chemical control by the scientific selection of adjuvants, the surface free energy and its components of wheat, corn, pepper, soybean, and apple leaves were measured by optical video contact angle measuring instrument. The contact angles of 2% femamectin benzoate ME and 20% abamectin + monosultap ME on the leaves of the above five crops were measured. The results showed that there were great differences in the adaxial and abaxial surface free energy of five crop leaves. The maximum and minimum surface free energy were pepper leaves (54.12 and 45.08 mJ/m²) and wheat leaves (3.76 and 6.42 mJ/m²), respectively. There were differences in surface free energy of the adaxial and abaxial leaves of the same crop. The adaxial and abaxial free energy of pepper leaves and the adaxial free energy of soybean leaves are dominated by polarity component, manifesting hydrophilicity, while the adaxial and abaxial free energy of wheat, corn, apple, and the abaxial free energy of soybean leaves are dominated by dispersion component, manifesting hydrophobicity. When Silwet 408 and GY-Spry were added to the 5 000-fold solution of 2% femamectin benzoate ME and 750-fold solution of 20% abamectin + monosultap ME, the contact angle of the solution on the leaves of five crops decreased to varying levels. After adding Silwet 408, the contact angles of the two solutions decreased by 82.63%- 100% and 85.07%-100% respectively. With the addition of GY-Spry, they decreased by 0-57.54% and 10.96%-59.13% respectively. The addition of Silwet 408 decreased the contact angle more significantly than GY-Spry. The decreasing trend of contact angle of the two insecticides added with adjuvants on the leaf surface of five crops was the same, and the decreasing trend of contact angle in 0-30 s was significantly higher than that in 30-60 s. Both Silwet 408 and GY-Spry improve the wettability of 2% femamectin benzoate ME and 20% abamectin + monosultap ME to five targets, and Silwet 408 is superior to GY-Spry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined a method to improve the water stability of macroporous polyurethane mixtures. Poor water stability of these mixtures has become an obstacle to their popularization and practical application. The water stability of asphalt mixtures can be significantly improved by adding a silane coupling agent (SCA), but the application of this method to polyurethane mixtures has not been researched. Therefore, this study investigated the addition of an SCA to polyurethane to enhance the interfacial adhesion between the polyurethane and the aggregate, thereby improving the water stability of the target macroporous polyurethane mixture. To achieve this aim, two SCAs, KH550 and KH560, were selected, and the change in the bond strength of polyurethane with 0%–4% SCA content was analyzed. The results were then compared and verified in accordance with surface free energy theory. The influence of the SCA on the water stability of the macroporous polyurethane mixture was verified by performing an immersion Marshall test, freeze–thaw splitting test, and immersion Cantabro loss test. Additionally, the effects of SCA on the high-temperature performance and skid resistance of the macroporous polyurethane mixture were analyzed by performing rutting and skid-resistance tests. The results revealed that the bond strength of polyurethane initially increased, and then decreased, with increasing SCA content. The effect of KH550 on bond strength was significantly greater than that of KH560, because KH560 does not react with polyurethane. Thus, according to the bond strength results, the recommended SCA was KH550, and the optimal SCA content was 2%. The immersion Marshall and freeze–thaw splitting tests were determined to be more suitable for evaluating the water stability of macroporous polyurethane mixtures than the immersion Cantabro loss test. Compared with the ordinary macroporous polyurethane mixture, the tensile strength ratio and residual stability of the modified mixture with 2% KH550 were 35% and 12.4% higher, respectively, indicating that the addition of KH550 significantly improved the water stability of the macroporous polyurethane mixture. Additionally, the tensile strength ratio results were found to be consistent with the surface free energy theory. The present study examined color changes in the tooth-colored restorative materials, zirconia (3Y-TZP), resin composite, and porcelain. The colors (CIELab) of these materials were measured using a spectrophotometer. Specimens were immersed in black tea or curry for 1 and 7 days, after which colors were re-assessed. Color differences (ΔE*ab) before and after immersion were calculated. Specimens after the 7-day immersion were ultrasonically cleaned, and colors were measured again to assess the color recovery rate. The surface free energy, roughness, and water sorption/solubility of each material were also evaluated. Specimens were observed under a scanning electron microscope. The ΔE*ab of 3Y-TZP was the smallest with both immersions. Resin composite had the smallest recovery rate. The surface free energy and roughness of 3Y-TZP were smaller than those of porcelain. 3Y-TZP and porcelain showed almost no sorption during the 7-day period. The resistance properties of the interface between polyurethane(PU) grouting materials and rocks subjected to water erosion are the theoretical basis for evaluating the long‐term performance, which, however, is not clear yet. Herein, surface free energy (SFE) theory is used to analyze the mechanism of water damage at the interface between the polyurethane and rock. The surface energy parameters of various PU grouting materials with different densities, limestone, and granite rock materials are tested. The adhesion and peeling work indices are calculated by the SFE theory. The results show that water brings little influence on PU grouting materials. The lower the density of PU is, the better the hydrophobicity is. The increase in the density of PU promotes adhesion between the PU and rock with and without water. Moreover, density increases the difference between SFEs of PU–rock and water–rock, decreasing the detachment tendency of PU over the rocks. Lithology also affects the adhesion of PU and rocks. PU–granite composite exhibits the largest adhesion work and smallest peeling work, which indicates that it has stronger water damage resistance. Graphene-porphyrin hybrid materials with direct assembly between the fluorinated graphene (FG) nanosheets and the pre-formed 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(p-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin (THPP) units have been successfully synthesized. The structure–property, binding, and assembly of THPP over FG nanosheets were methodically analyzed by spectroscopic, microscopic, and solvent wetting techniques. The solvent wetting characteristics and surface free energy of the supportless THPP and FG-supported THPP were investigated. The decoration of porphyrin over FG ensued in a surface free energy of 28.7 mJ m−2 directing to hydrophobic (WCA ~ 130 ± 2°) networks. Photo-physical studies demonstrated considerable non-covalent interactions between the THPP with FG multi-layers. The emission responses of THPP and FG-THPP with ferric complexes and its coordination with respect to the –philicity of the THPP were probed using photoluminescence spectroscopy. The functional groups blended in the FG-THPP inks were subjected to fuse with interconnected networks like cellulose paper and melamine sponge by exploiting the dispersion processability followed by morphology evaluation and water-wettability. Using modified bitumen has been one of the few reliable methods adopted for improving asphalt performance against moisture sensitivity. This research offers an approach in which both mechanical methods and micro-mechanism investigations have been employed to study the effect of bitumen modified with epoxy resin on the moisture sensitivity of asphalt mixtures. Six bitumen samples: base bitumen and bitumen modified with 1% to 5% epoxy resins, and two types of aggregates (limestone and siliceous) were selected for this study. Surface Free Energy method and Modified Lottman test were used to investigate the moisture sensitivity of asphalt mixtures containing each bitumen-aggregates combination. In the first method, surface free energy values of bitumen and aggregates were estimated and then used in predicting energy parameters related to the moisture sensitivity parameters, using which the changes in adhesion and wetting properties of each bitumen-aggregates mixture were analyzed. In the second method, the indirect tensile strength test was performed on dry and wet asphalt samples, and the tensile strength ratios were obtained for each asphalt mixture, through which the moisture resistance of samples were investigated. Based on the values obtained for the three parameters, it was concluded that epoxy resin addition decreased the moisture sensitivity of asphalt mixtures containing siliceous aggregates by increasing the bitumen and aggregates adhesion as well as increasing the wetting of the aggregates surface with bitumen. Also, in asphalt mixtures containing limestone aggregates, epoxy resin improved moisture sensitivity, but this improvement was only due to increased adhesion between bitumen and aggregates, while the impact of bitumen coating on aggregates surface did not change significantly with the addition of epoxy resin. Among the asphalt mixtures studied, the highest moisture resistance was observed in asphalt mixture containing 4% epoxy resin, at which the Tensile Strength Ratio parameter showed an increase of 11.3% and 21.5% for limestone and siliceous mixtures, respectively, compared to the base asphalt mixture. 3D printing plays an important role in manufacturing of parts. Recent developments in 3D printing technology enable to print various shapes, sizes, and functional surfaces. The printed surfaces can have texture topology, which enables changing wetting state from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. This requires proper setting of printing parameters. In the present study, 3D printing of samples from titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) is carried out. The resulting surface topology is examined using the analytical tools. The wetting state of 3D printed sample surfaces is assessed incorporating the contact angle method. The surface free energy of the printed samples is determined adopting the liquid contact angle technique. It is found that printed surfaces possess hydrophobic wetting state with droplet contact angle of 135° ± 5°. The droplet contact angle hysteresis is of the order of 36°, which causes pinning of the droplet on the surface. The surface free energy is determined as 54.2 mJ/m2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Laser patterning techniques have shown in the last decades to be capable of producing functional surfaces on a large variety of materials. A particular challenge for these techniques is the treatment of additively manufactured parts with high roughness levels. The presented study reports on the surface modification of additive‐manufactured components of Ti64 and Al–Mg–Sc (Scalmalloy), with the aim of implementing water‐ and ice‐repellent properties. Different laser‐based microstructuring techniques, using nanosecond and picosecond pulses, are combined to create multiscale textures with feature sizes between ≈800 nm and 21 μm. The wettability could be set to static water contact angles between 141° and 153° for Ti64 and Al–Mg–Sc, respectively. In addition, surface free energy is analyzed for different surface conditions. The utilization of waste rubber tires is of great value for environment protection and resource recovery, which can also improve the properties of matrix asphalt. The adhesion characteristics were evaluated for crumb rubber modified asphalt and limestone aggregate using the surface free energy (SFE) approach. Four types of matrix asphalt and four rubber contents were used to prepare the crumb rubber modified asphalt. The contact angle of matrix and crumb rubber modified asphalt was obtained, and the SFE indicators (dispersion, polar component, and compatibility rate—CR) were calculated. Moreover, the water stability tests were conducted using one matrix and rubber modified asphalt in order to investigate the relationship between SFE and water stability indicators. Results showed that the total SFE, dispersion component, adhesion work, and CR increased with the addition of crumb rubber, while the polar component and spalling work decreased. The types of asphalt had different influences on SFE indicators. The results from analysis of variation (ANOVA) indicated asphalt type and rubber content had significant influence on the adhesion work, spalling work and CR, and the influence of asphalt type was greater than that of rubber content. Additionally, the retained Marshall Stability and tensile strength ratio had better correlation with adhesion work and CR, but less with spalling work. New segmented poly(thiourethane-urethane)s (SPTURs) were synthesized by the reaction of 1,1′-methanediylbis (4-isocyanatocyclohexane) (Desmodur W®, HMDI) and poly(ε-caprolactone)diol (PCL) and (methanediyldibenzene-4,1-diyl)dimethanethiol as nonconventional polymer chain extender. FTIR spectroscopy was used for the structural analysis of obtained polymers. The molecular weight distribution was examined by GPC chromatography. Based on the measured contact angles, free surface energy parameters were calculated. Thermal properties of polymers were examined by DSC and TGA, while viscoelastic properties were measured by DMTA. The tensile, adhesive and optical properties were also investigated for the obtained polymers. It was shown that SPTURs were transparent or partially transparent solids with high molar masses up to 84,300 Da. These polymers showed a good resistance to hydrolysis during incubation in Optylite® physiological saline over 8 weeks. Obtained polymers possessed a tensile strength of up to 43.26 MPa, hardness of up to 96.25/59.00 Sh A/D and adhesion to copper of 14.66 MPa. The surface properties of the obtained polymers show that all obtained SPTURs were hydrophilic (CAs for water between 64.07° and 73.12°) with calculated SFE up to 46.69 mN/m. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The new segmented poly(thiourethane-urethane)s (PTURs) based on 1,1′-methanediylbis(4-isocyanatocyclohexane) (HMDI, Desmodur W®), polycarbonate diol (PCD, Desmophen C2200) and (methanediyldibenzene-4,1-diyl)dimethanethiol were synthesized by one-step melt polyaddition method. The obtained PTURs, with a content of 30–60 wt% of the hard segments (HS), were tested in which the influence of changes in the HS content on their properties was determined. The polymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermal analysis (DSC, TGA) and thermomechanical analysis (DMTA). Additionally, tensile strength, optical (refractive index, UV-VIS and color) and surface properties of the obtained polymers (contact angle and surface free energy) and adhesion to copper were examined. FTIR analysis verified the supposed structure of the polymers obtained and showed a complete conversion of the isocyanate groups. TGA analysis confirmed the relatively good thermal stability of the polymers. On the other hand, after performing the DSC analysis, it was possible to state that the obtained materials were partially or completely amorphous, and the microphase separation decreased with increasing HS content in the polymer. Similar observations were made from the DMTA data. In addition, the hardness, tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, storage modulus, adhesion to copper, refractive index and total free surface energy increased with increasing HS content in the polymer.
