In this paper, a model for development of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) has been presented in perspective of India to ensure the Economic and Social development of the country and addressing, simultaneously, some of the major challenges being faced by India. Adequate microfinancing to the SHGs and developing entrepreneurship among its members may help in achieving several targets like poverty alleviation, women empowerment, employment generation, homogeneous development etc. If planned properly, the SHGs can become an instrument for all round and all-inclusive development of India or any other similarly placed developing country. SHGs may also play an import role in the endeavour of India to become a five trillion economy, to achieve self-sustainability and to attain the Sustainable Development Goals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The global pandemic Covid-19 and its ill effects has created a fear all over the world. This novel virus has affected 216 countries across the globe. The number of confirmed cases and death are on the hype as per the daily reports by world health organisation and it has sparked an economic crisis. Due to self-isolation, social-distancing, restrictions on transportation services have put every sector of economy on downturn. The people in unorganised sectors are losing their jobs. The demand for manufactured goods and other commodities has been decreased. The demand for medical supplies and essential food items are on an increase. The article discusses a symposium on secondary and higher education in geography held by the Indian Institute for Geographical Studies (TIIGS) and the Association of American Geographers' (AAG) Center for Global Geography Education (CGGE) from March 12-16, 2012 in Banglore, India. Topics addressed include the symposium's focus on geography education in India, as well as case studies developed on topics such as water resources, transportation and manufacturing, and labor migration.

Multidimensional poverty measures give rise to a host of statistical hypotheses that are of interest to applied economists and policy-makers alike. In the specific context of the generalized Alkire–Foster (Alkire and Foster, 2008) class of measures, we show that many of these hypotheses can be treated in a unified manner and also tested simultaneously using a minimum p-value approach. When applied to study the relative state of poverty among Hindus and Muslims in India, these tests reveal novel insights into the plight of the poor which are not otherwise captured by traditional univariate approaches. The article presents an in-depth examination into the demographic characteristics and trends of India for the 21st century, highlighting the economic issues surrounding its large population. Details are given noting the scale of India's population growth between 1950 and 2010. Analysis is offered explaining the forces involved within the ongoing demographic transition in the nation, including infant mortality, life expectancy and fertility rates. Discussion is then offered proposing the possible challenges and benefits facing the labor market in response to the population trends.

Contemporary society in India is marked by the growing importance of consumer culture, fuelled by the rise of disposable incomes in the hands of a huge middle class and increasing availability of a large variety of commodities in the open market, including a growing number of shopping malls. The article examines India’s ‘new middle class’ as an agency of consumption, engaged in a process which seems to be jeopardising long held ideals of self-sufficiency, self-reliance and anti-materialism. After the economic liberalisation of the 1990s, consumer goods appear to have become a crucial basis for redefining status distinctions in Indian society and for negotiating interpersonal and inter-communal relationships within the seemingly antithetical categories of tradition and modernity. As in other forms of globalisation, however, the resulting patterns of change are not simply based on total abolition of older ‘traditional’ structures and their replacement by new patterns. Despite apparent changes in shopping habits and the emergence of blatant consumerism, the older moral tradition continues to oppose rising materialism and individualism, contributing to the limited success of shopping malls. This essay looks at how a recent television commercial simulates and plays on the dominant aesthetic, careerist, consumerist, nationalist and entertainment/leisure desires of consuming female subjects in India. The product advertised here is a fairness (bleaching) face cream, 'Fair & Lovely'. The advertisement appeals to a set of prevalent gender and colour prejudices by 'seducing' the careerist and consumerist desires of educated young Indian women. Depicting the life of an 'ordinary' consuming subject from an unknown city neighbourhood to the globalized information highways of satellite television, the advertisement projects a hyperreal world in which gendered occupational barriers have apparently withered away, courtesy of commodity consumption. The advertisement is critically analysed as a pastiche of seductive simulacra concerning the desire for 'fairness' in the midst of 'unfair' cultural prejudices, social contradictions and apolitical commercial ideologies. The article discusses the relation between religious conflict and economics in Indian cities. The article describes how Muslim-Hindu conflict often arises due to a struggle over resources, and studies the various factors which lead to violence in localized areas of residentially segregated cities. The study uses neighborhood-level data on religious diversity and compares it to data on riot-related deaths in Ahmedabad, India to show that incidences of violence were more likely to occur in integrated areas. The study explains this phenomena by suggesting that weak tenancy rights prevented less-tolerant people from relocating to segregated neighborhoods.

The author reflects on the political, economic, and social conditions of India after becoming a democratic republic. He argues that despite of having a firm distribution system of the public, hunger-caused deaths and starvation remain a problem. He says that although law-enforcing bodies, investigation agencies, and public watchdogs are present, corruption is still existing. He concludes that traditional disbelief, character loss, and corrupt behavior drove Indian society towards failure.
