There seems to be a never-ending stream of articles debating the future of libraries. For a nice change of pace, a column from the January/February 2019 issue of Online Searcher [...]

In the article "Branding Helped to Promote Our Library and Its Technology," in the May 2004 issue of "Computers in Libraries," author Sejan Yun explains the use of a 2-year-long renovation project at the Saint Paul Public Library to raise the general awareness of the entire library system by creating an identity program and logo. The program was divided into the decision phase, in which the logo was created and finalized, and the implementation phase, in which the logo would then be incorporated into all library promotional materials. In the article "Facing Live Reference," in the May to June 2004 issue of "ONLINE," author Joe Fernandez expounds upon areas that are most crucial to the successful implementation of live reference (LR). LR is becoming an increasingly popular tool for handling off-site information queries. In the article "Institutional Repositories: Hidden Treasures," in the May 2004 issue of "Searcher," author Miriam A. Drake discusses how to uncover valuable scientific, technical, cultural, artistic and historical artifacts that may have been forgotten in the archives, basements and attics of universities, museums and government sites.

The article discusses several articles about information technology and libraries. Karen Coombs, information technology and instruction librarian at the State University of New York chronicles how she created a single interface that would allow users to search all holdings catalogs at once. She decided to use XML as her mode of operation. Coombs' key to victory was making the two lists appear to be one on the Web by linking two pieces of data, the ISSN number and title. In another article, Matthew McBride focuses on two of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) executive offices as well as its seven primary mission areas. McBride summarizes the types of information available from the seven primary mission areas. Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services aims to keep U.S. farmers growing through uncertain weather and economic times. The mission of the Rural Development area is to improve the economy and quality of life for residents in rural America. Irene McDermott, on the other hand, wrote about Web sites that can help people get a handle on the different candidates for the presidential election. McDermott recommends a number of good overview sites, such as CNN's American Votes 2004, Presidential Primary Preview and Democracy in Action: P2004.

The author talks about the role of books and libraries in designing outreach programs featuring two articles from the Marketing Library Services' March/April 2015 issue. The articles are "Our Faculty Outreach: Celebrating Tenure," by Molly D. Boyd, which talks about her commemorative books-focused reception for University of Arkansas' tenured or promoted faculty members, and "Denver's Successful 'Summer of Reading'," by Chris W. Henning, on the Denver Public Library's Summer Reading program.

The article focuses on Jacques-Paul Migne, the 19th century priest from Paris who end up editing a 221-volume anthology that 200 years later is cited by the New York Public Library as one of its top 10 requested reference collections. An ecclesiastical publisher as well as a man of the cloth, Migne set out to put together the ultimate chronology of the development of the Christian doctrine for his fellow priests. The collection is known as Patrologia Latina. This literally means the study of the writings of the forefathers. And in his own mind's eye, all the texts that Migne included related in some way to the history of Christianity and the Christian church. Vice President of Chadwyck-Healey Inc. Eric M. Calaluca has an abundant knowledge of Migne and his vast edition, for he has spent more than three years overseeing Chadwyck-Healey's efforts in converting the Patrologia Latina volumes to CD-ROM and magnetic tape formats. The resulting Patrologia Latina Database is Chadwyck-Healey's highly ambitious electronic publishing project that, upon completion in late 1993, will offer full-text access to Migne's compilation, which Calaluca estimates to be about 155,000 pages worth of the written logos.

The article presents information on Mead Data Central Inc.'s new Entertainment library (ENTERT). ENTERT was premiered on Mead Data Central's Nexis service. ENTERT draws a large portion of its entertainment information from Baseline, a New York-based electronic publishing company that extensively covers the film and television industries. ENTERT has the goods on current contract negotiations and pending litigation, as well as hot news on celebrities and the mediums they represent. According to Judi Schultz, Senior Communications Specialist, Mead Data Central, ENTERT has already been accessed more than any other preexisting Nexis special library. Over ten files are thus far available on ENTERT, with new ones continuously being added. The latest film grosses and historical data on movie gross revenues are updated each week through ENTERT. Gale Biographies, a reference source containing profiles of more than 10,000 internationally renowned people, from Gale Research Inc., is an additional file available through the Entertainment library.

The article focuses on "Five Things You Really Need to Know About Social Media," by Laura Solomon and "Not Good With Elevator Speeches? Try Taxi Chats," by Kathy Dempsey. Topics discussed include the five reasons why some libraries have a successful online presence and some do not, the reference to taxi chats in emphasizing the need for librarians to be always ready to educate people about the multitiered value of libraries, and knowing the audience as the underlying theme of the two articles.

The steps taken by the Brownsburg Public Library in Indiana to promote the services provided by the library among its patrons and to reach out to people in the community are highlighted. The initiatives employed to train and prepare library staff members to equip them to do effective outreach are described.

The article discusses MLS: Marketing Library Services in the U.S. by making personal connections. It details the Pennsylvania School Librarians Association (PSLA) legislation committee's task of re-establishing a school library presence in the state's capital, Harrisburg, after the Pennsylvania Department of Education eliminated the Division of School Library Services in 2007. It outlines how library assistant Sami Lange at the Sonoma State University Library worked with residential life coordinators to expand the library's student outreach program.

Ojala acknowledges the trend towards more virtual elements. He highlights the use of social networks that offer additional avenues.

The number one piece of advice to increase the chances that a proposal will be accepted is to know the competition and how many grants will be presented from each foundation. It is advised to take time to find out about the foundation's mission statement and priorities and not just the grants it is offering.
