A industrialização de alimentos resultou em um novo modelo alimentar altamente processado. O consumo de alimentos industrializados, aumenta a ingestão de aditivos alimentares, que possuem a função de preservação das características do alimento bem como melhorias nas propriedades sensoriais. Entretanto alguns estudos demonstram que se adicionados em quantidade elevadas para consumo podem levar a toxicidade. Assim, o objetivo do estudo foi revisar dados publicados que relacionam o uso do aditivo químico sorbato de potássio como conservante alimentar com o desenvolvimento de câncer gastrointestinal. Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa seguindo seis etapas distintas (1. Elaboração da pergunta norteadora; 2. Busca ou amostragem na literatura; 3. Coleta de dados; 4. Análise crítica dos estudos incluídos; 5. Discussão dos resultados e 6. Apresentação da revisão integrativa). Foi realizada entre os meses de março e abril de 2019 nas bases de dados: Periódicos CAPES, Pubmed, Biblioteca virtual Unicamp e Science Direct. Os descritores principais utilizados foram: “Potassium sorbate” e “Sorbic acid”, combinados com os descritores, “gastrointestinal neoplasia”, “Cancer of gastrointestinal tract” e “Neoplasia”. Após leitura dos títulos e resumos, foram incluídos oito artigos e, após leitura destes, permaneceram seis artigos. Diante dos artigos encontrados é possível afirmar que o ácido sórbico e o sorbato de potássio tem baixa relação com o desenvolvimento de câncer gastrointestinal. Palavras-chave: Aditivos Alimentares. The consumption of industrialized food increases the food additives intake, which have the function of preserving the food characteristics as well as improving sensory properties. However, some studies show that if added in high amounts for consumption they can lead to toxicity. Thus, the objective of the study was to review published data that relate the use of the chemical additive potassium sorbate as a food preservative with the development of gastrointestinal cancer. It is an integrative review following six distinct steps (1. Preparation of the guiding question; 2. Searching or sampling in the literature; 3. Data collection; 4. Critical analysis of the studies included; 5. Discussion of the results and 6. Presentation of the integrative review). It was held between March and April 2019 in the databases: CAPES Periodicals, Pubmed, Virtual Library Unicamp and Science Direct. The main descriptors used were: "Potassium sorbate" and "Sorbic acid", combined with the descriptors "gastrointestinal neoplasia", " Gastrointestinal tract cancer" and "Neoplasia". After reading the titles and abstracts, eight articles were included and, after reading them, six articles remained. Suboptimal selenium status may impair the antioxidant defense system in patients undergoing hemodialysis, compromising the selenoenzyme glutathione peroxidase activity. To evaluate the association between the duration of hemodialysis, nutritional selenium status, glutathione peroxidase activity (GPx), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels in patients with chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis in a region of selenium-rich soils (Ceara, Northeast Brazil). The case-control study of 75 individuals aged 18 to 88 years was allocated between two groups: hemodialysis (n = 41) and control (n = 34). Plasma and erythrocytes selenium levels were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The GPx activity and TBARS levels were also evaluated. In addition, the hemodialysis group was stratified according to the duration of treatment (≤ 59 months and ≥ 60 months). The Mann-Whitney test, Student's t test, and Pearson's or Spearman's correlation were applied according to the data distribution. Moreover, a quantile regression was performed. The significance level (p) was < 0.05. The hemodialysis group had lower selenium levels in their plasma and erythrocytes than the control group (p < 0.001). However, there was no difference in the GPx activity between the groups. Furthermore, an association between the hemodialysis group and selenium levels in plasma (coefficient - 16,343, p < 0.001) and erythrocytes (coefficient - 7839, p = 0.003) was observed by quantile regression, independent of age, sex, and body-mass index. In individuals who had undergone treatment for 60 months or more, GPx activity was lower (p = 0.026) and TBARS levels higher (p = 0.011) than in those who had undergone treatment for less than 60 months. The status of selenium was reduced in the hemodialysis group compared to the control group. The lower GPx activity and higher levels of TBARS in individuals who had undergone treatment for 60 months or more correlated with greater oxidative stress.

Studies of subcutaneous and visceral abdominal fat thickness evaluated by ultrasound as a predictor of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have been published, but the best technique and standardization are unknown. To identify, critically evaluate, and analyze studies using subcutaneous and visceral abdominal fat as a model for predicting GDM in the first and second trimesters of pregnancy and evaluate their methodological quality.PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched from May to July 2019. We included studies of any sample size performed for any duration and in any configuration. Model development and validation studies were eligible for inclusion. Two authors independently performed the eligibility assessment of the studies by reviewing the titles and abstracts. Data on study design, gestational age, diagnostic criteria for GDM, device, ultrasound fat measurement technique, and cutoff point for GDM prediction were extracted.The electronic search resulted in 1331 articles, of which 14 were eligible for systematic review. Different criteria for diagnosing GDM and fat measurement techniques were used. The cutoff point for subcutaneous, visceral, and total abdominal fat for predicting GDM in the first and second trimesters varied between the studies.No study validated the model for predicting GDM using subcutaneous and visceral abdominal fat measurements. External validation studies are recommended to improve the generalization of this GDM predictor in clinical practice.

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of liver transplantation in food intake and nutritional status of severe cirrhotic patients. Methods:The sample consisted of 23 patients who underwent liver transplantation. Three 24-hour dietary recall were applied and anthropometric measurements were collected before and three months after transplantation. The consumption of macronutrients and fat soluble vitamins were also evaluated. The anthropometric data evaluated were body mass index, abdominal circumference, percentage of adequacy of arm circumference, triceps skinfold thickness and arm muscle circumference. Related mean comparison tests, comparison of changes in the proportions of categorical variables and correlation of quantitative variables were used in the statistical analysis. Data were considered to be significant when p < 0.05. Results: Most patients were female and aged between 40 and 65 years. The average consumption of calories, proteins, lipids, cholesterol and monounsaturated fatty acids was significantly higher after liver transplantation (p < 0.05). The average of anthropometric parameters did not differ significantly between the evaluated times. There was no significant change in nutrient intake or anthropometric classification after transplantation. Most patients were classified as malnourished or overweight after transplantation, according to some anthropometric parameters. Conclusion: Food consumption changed after transplantation. There was no change in the nutritional status from pre- to post-transplant but, in general, most patients had altered nutritional status in both evaluation moments.

AIMS To evaluate the efficacy of a gluten-free diet (GFD) as a treatment modality for pain management in women with chronic myofascial pain in masticatory muscles. METHODS In this randomized controlled trial, 39 female subjects were evaluated according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) and divided into three groups: a healthy group (n = 14; mean ± SD age = 34.57 ± 9.14 years); a control group (n = 12; age = 31.50 ± 7.38 years); and an experimental group (n = 13; age 30.00 ± 7.64 years). The outcome variables were: pain intensity, mechanical pain threshold (MPT), and pressure pain threshold (PPT). MPT was performed on the masseter muscle, and PPT was performed on both the masseter and anterior temporalis muscles. A nutritionist prescribed a 4-week individualized GFD for the experimental group. The healthy group was analyzed only initially, whereas the control and experimental groups were analyzed again after 4 weeks. Data were subjected to statistical analysis with a significance level of 5% (one-way analysis of variance followed by Bonferroni post hoc, paired t, Wilcoxon signed rank, Kruskal-Wallis/Dunn, and Pearson chi-square tests). RESULTS Participants who underwent a GFD showed reduction in pain intensity (P = .006) and an increase in PPT of the masseter (P = .017) and anterior temporalis (P = .033) muscles. The intervention did not influence the MPT of the masseter muscle (P = .26). In contrast, the control group showed no improvement in any parameter evaluated. CONCLUSION GFD seemed to reduce pain sensitivity in women with TMD and may be beneficial as an adjunctive therapy for chronic myofascial pain in masticatory muscles; however, further studies in the fields of orofacial pain and nutrition are required.

Objective: In this study, we aim to evaluate whether the presence of malnutrition in children and adolescents with infectious diseases is associated with high nutritional risk obtained by the STRONGkids instrument. Methods: A cross-sectional study comprising 237 hospitalized patients aged between 30 days and 18 years. Identification and diagnosis data, weight and height were collected. STRONGkids determined nutritional risk. Acute malnutrition was classified by BMI/age Z score < - 2 and chronic by Height/age Z score < - 2. Associations between categorical variables were verified using Pearson's chi-square test. A logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the association between anthropometric parameters of malnutrition and nutritional risk. It was considered significant p< 0,05. Results: In multiple analysis, it was observed that having malnutrition as of BMI/age increases the chance by 5.68 of having high nutritional risk by the STRONGKids instrument, regardless of age, sex and the presence of poverty-related infectious diseases (OR: 5.68; 95% CI: 1.54-20.93; p=0.009). Conclusion: In summary, for patients with infectious diseases, acute malnutrition (BMI/age) is associated directly with the diagnosis of high nutritional risk by STRONGkids. Objetivo: En este estudio, nuestro objetivo fue evaluar si la presencia de desnutrición en niños y adolescentes con enfermedades infecciosas se asocia con el alto riesgo nutricional obtenido por el instrumento STRONGkids. Métodos: Estudio transversal en el que participaron 237 pacientes hospitalizados con edades comprendidas entre los 30 días y los 18 años. Se recogieron datos de identificación, diagnóstico, peso y talla. STRONGkids determinó el riesgo nutricional. Objective:The study objective is to propose bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) ellipses for the population and investigate its use to assess nutritional status through the BMI/age ratio and the cardiovascular risk through waist circumference (WC).Design:Age, weight, height and WC were recorded, along with the values of resistance (R), reactance (Xc) and phase angle (PA) by impedance. Student’s t test and ANOVA were applied to ascertain the significance between means and a specific programme was applied to investigate the significance between ellipses.Setting:Fortaleza, Brazil.Participants:A total of 467 students from public schools participated in the study: 120 children and 347 adolescents were evaluated, with respective means of age, weight and height of 8·2 years, 27·6 kg and 1·29 m and 12·7 years, 48·6 kg and 1·53 m, respectively.Results:The mean values of R/H, Xc/H and PA were 569·0 and 424·7 Ohm/m, 59·1 and 50·4 Ohm/m, and 5·9º and 6·8º for children and adolescents, respectively. The mean vectors for R/H and Xc/H show significant differences between for both age ranges and are inversely proportional to the BMI/A. As for WC, individuals without cardiovascular risk had higher R/H and lower Xc/H, but Xc and R in participants without cardiovascular risk were greater than with cardiovascular risk.Conclusions:It was possible to propose confidence and tolerance BIVA ellipses for children and adolescent’s clinical evaluation. The method was also suitable to identify cardiovascular risk ellipses in these age groups, but it was not possible to draw nutritional classifications ellipses by BMI/age data.

Background Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) had a 1.5-fold increase in cardiovascular diseases (CVD) mortality, compared with those without MS. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the CVD risk in MS patients by multiple cardiometabolic indexes and to investigate associated factors. Methods The MS group included 57 patients matched for age and sex to 57 healthy controls. They were evaluated for physical activity, smoking, anthropometric indices, blood pressure, and plasma biomarkers. Framingham risk score (FRS) and multiple cardiovascular risk indexes were calculated. Clinical course of disease, age at onset, disease duration, disease-modifying therapy, relapse rate, EDSS, physical and functional impairment were investigated. Results The mean age was 34.6 years old. The majority (89.5%) in the MS group had a RRMS clinical course and a mild level of disability (EDSS=1.0). WC (p = 0.022) and FM% (p = 0.007) were different between the MS and control groups. The FRS was higher in the MS group (10% versus 0%) and this was related with high prevalence of dyslipidemia (43.8% versus 36.8%). The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) (0.013) and Castelli risk indexes I (CRI-I) (p = 0.017) and II (CRI-II) (p = 0.008) and non-HDL-C (p = 0.044) were higher in the MS group. Conclusion MS patients, with controlled disease course, have a higher cardiovascular risk than comparable healthy individuals. We emphasize that the use of FRS, and the monitoring of CRI-I and II, as well as AIP, are important lipid markers to manage CVD risk in individuals with MS.

Selenium deficiency appears to limit antioxidant defense in obese individuals. This study evaluated the association between adiposity indices, selenium status, and oxidative stress in obese women.This was a cross-sectional study involving 139 women who were divided into the following two groups: the case group (obese women, n = 63) and the control group (normal-weight women, n = 76). Plasma, erythrocyte, and urinary selenium levels were determined using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Body weight, height, waist circumference, hip circumference and neck circumference were measured. Body mass index, waist/height ratio, conicity index, body fat index, body adiposity index, body circularity index, and visceral adiposity index were calculated. Plasma levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances were determined. The erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity was determined using an automatic biochemical analyzer and Ransel kit.Obese women had selenium deficiency characterized by reduction in plasma and erythrocyte concentrations (P.001). The urinary selenium excretion was higher in the case group compared to the control group (P.001). Adiposity indices values and plasma concentrations of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances were significantly elevated in obese women (P.001). There was a significant association between adiposity indices and selenium status (P.001), and between erythrocyte selenium and erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity (P.001).Obese women evaluated in the study have reduced plasma and erythrocyte concentrations of selenium and an increased urinary excretion of selenium. The correlation analysis reveals an association between intra-abdominal fat accumulation and selenium metabolism and oxidative stress.

Objective: To evaluate the selenium status and oxidative stress in male infertility cases selected from a private human reproduction center in the state of Ceará, Brazil. Methods: The present study had a cross-sectional quantitative approach, carried out between January and October 2013 at a Human Reproduction Center. The studied population was composed of 49 male individuals seen at the clinic, aged between 18 and 60 years. Blood samples were collected to measure serum selenium concentrations, erythrocyte activity and glutathione peroxidase. After medical diagnosis, the participants were divided into fertile and infertile groups. Blood samples were collected for establishing Se concentrations in plasma and erythrocytes, and measurements of the enzymatic activity of glutathione peroxidase in the erythrocytes. Result: it resulted in 53.1% of fertile men and 46.9% of infertile men. The average age of the fertile group was 34.1 years and the infertile group was 37.3 years. Regarding the assessment of nutritional status, the scatter diagram of the infertility group showed a higher body mass index and waist circumference, showing that this group has a higher risk of global and abdominal obesity compared to the fertile group (p

espanolObjetivo: el objetivo de este estudio fue investigar los efectos del extracto acuoso de Chrysobalanus icaco (AECI) en la adiposidad y su mecanismo de accion en la expresion genica y proteica de la acetil-CoA-carboxilasa (ACC), una enzima clave para la lipogenesis. Metodos: se usaron ratones macho Wistar que se asignaron a una dieta estandar de control (CG) o a una rica en grasa (HFD). La HFD se trato con solucion salina o con extracto acuoso de Chrysobalanus icaco (AECI) durante cuatro semanas. Se evaluaron el peso corporal y el consumo alimentario. Se aislaron y analizaron muestras de tejido adiposo subcutaneo, retroperitoneal y periepididimico. Se determino la expresion genica y proteica de ACC en el tejido subcutaneo. Resultados: el AECI no mostro ningun efecto sobre la ingesta de alimento y tampoco sobre el peso corporal. Sin embargo, el tratamiento con AECI redujo el peso de los tejidos adiposos y la expresion genica y proteica de ACC, y mejoro tambien la tolerancia a la glucosa. Conclusion: Chrysobalanus icaco (AECI) resulto ser beneficioso para el tratamiento de la obesidad, previniendo el almacenamiento de grasa y mejorando la homeostasis glucemica. EnglishObjective: the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Chrysobalanus icaco on adiposity and its mechanism of action in the gene and protein expression of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), a key enzyme in lipogenesis. Method: Wistar rats were divided into a regular or control group (CG) and a high-fat diet (HFD) group. HFD was treated with saline or aqueous extract of Chrysobalanus icaco (AECI) for four weeks. Body weight and food intake were assessed. Subcutaneous, retroperitoneal and periepididymal adipose tissue samples were collected and weighed. Adipocytes from periepididymal tissue were isolated and analyzed. The gene and protein expression of ACC in subcutaneous tissue was determined. Results: AECI showed no effect on intake or body weight. However, the weight of the fat pads and the gene and protein expression of ACC were lower, and glucose tolerance was improved. Conclusion: the aqueous extract of Chrysobalanus icaco proved beneficial for the treatment of obesity, preventing fat storage and improving glycemic homeostasis.

This study aims at analyzing the association between the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) and the clinical condition of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. It is a quantitative, cross-sectional analytical study that included 137 MS patients assisted at a reference center for MS treatment in the Brazilian northeast. Data was collated through a structured questionnaire and medical records consultation, also involving demographic, clinical, and nutritional variables. Clinical variables included the MS type, diagnosis and follow-up start dates, investigation of recent urinary tract symptoms, use of immunomodulatory, vitamin D supplementation, number of recent pulse therapies, relapse rate in the last 2 years, muscular strength assessment (MRC), disability degree (EDSS), and a gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan in the central white matter (CWM). The DII was calculated according to the Shivappa et al. methodology. There was no difference in any of the variables according to the DII (p > 0.05). The Dietary Inflammatory Index did not affect the clinical condition of individuals with multiple sclerosis.

Objetivo: Investigar a relação entre concentração de zinco e risco cardiovascular em pacientes com insuficiência renal crônica em hemodiálise. Métodos: Estudo analítico, retrospectivo e transversal, realizado em Fortaleza, Ceará, em 2012, do qual participaram 43 adultos com insuficiência renal crônica em hemodiálise (grupo HD) e 35 saudáveis (CO - controle). Coletaram-se dados socioeconômicos e bioquímicos (colesterol total - CT, lipoproteína de baixa densidade - LDL, lipoproteína de muito baixa densidade - VLDL, lipoproteína de alta densidade - HDL e triglicerídeos - TG); determinou-se zinco plasmático por espectrometria de emissão óptica com plasma acoplado; coletou-se perfil lipídico do grupo HD do prontuário e do grupo CO por meio de kit Bioclin®. Obteve-se colesterol não-HDL pela fórmula: não-HDL = CT – HDL-c. Calculou-se risco cardiovascular pela razão TG/HDL, considerando risco quando >3,8. The aim of the study was to investigate the association between blood and tissue levels of selenium and thyroid cancer through a systematic review. We searched for observational studies written in English, Spanish, and Portuguese indexed in PubMed, LILACS, and Scielo without date restriction, that evaluated the association between selenium levels in whole-blood, serum, or plasma and/or thyroid tissue and thyroid cancer, both in individuals with cancer of thyroid as in healthy individuals. Then data were extracted and analyzed. Of the 570 articles identified, five cross-sectional studies were included in the review. In one study, lower concentrations of selenium were found in whole-blood (0.543 μg/ml) and in the thyroid (0.88 μg/g) of thyroid cancer patients compared to controls. Another study showed a decrease in serum selenium concentrations in patients with follicular carcinoma and papillary types (0.077 ± 0.021 μg/ml and 0.080 ± 0.020 μg/ml, respectively). On the other hand, other studies showed no difference in plasma selenium content or glutathione peroxidase activity among patients and healthy volunteers. The available evidence on this issue is inconclusive. Additional studies are needed to elucidate the association between serum and/or tissue levels of selenium and the development of thyroid cancer.

O presente estudo tem como objetivo avaliar a prevalência de dislipidemia e estimar o risco cardiovascular segundo indicadores bioquímicos mais precisos em adolescentes, de acordo com o estado nutricional. Trata-se de um estudo transversal realizado com 807 adolescentes de escolas públicas, de ambos os sexos, com idade entre 10 a 17 anos. O estado nutricional foi classificado de acordo com o índice de massa corporal. Foi considerada dislipidemia a presença de níveis aumentados em pelo menos um dos parâmetros do perfil lipídico: triglicerídeos (TG), colesterol total e frações de alta (HDL-c) e baixa densidade (LDL-c). O risco cardiovascular foi estimado pelo cálculo do Índice de Castelli I (IC-I) e II (IC-II), TG/HDL-c e não-HDL-c. Os dados foram analisados pela regressão de Poisson com estimativas robustas da variância com nível de significância de 5%. A idade mediana foi de 13 (12-14) anos, dos quais 57,7% eram do sexo feminino. Foi encontrado uma prevalência de 32% de excesso de peso. Past research has shown the importance of zinc in several metabolic processes, such as the glucidic metabolism. The present systematic review aims to discuss zinc's participation in the glycemic control of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) patients. In order to accomplish that, a systematic search was performed in the Pubmed database using the following indexed and theme-related descriptors: "zinc" AND "type 2 diabetes mellitus", AND MeSH terms related to glycemic control combined with the boolean operator OR. In total, 1078 articles were retrieved from the research, of which 15 articles of original studies conducted with DM2 patients were included, with three being about the effect of mineral supplementation and 12 reporting observational studies. The main findings of these studies consisted of low body contents of zinc and high excretion of zinc in urine. Hyperglycemia was one of the mechanisms that caused these alterations owing to its interference in zinc reabsorption via renal cells. Another evidence was the negative correlation between the glycated hemoglobin percentage (%HbA1c) and the plasma zinc levels. Additionally, it has been observed that zinc supplementation in DM2 patients has improved glycemic control, since the %HbA1c significantly reduced in these individuals. This present review shows the positive effect of adequate zinc levels on glycemic control, whether it is through dietetic ingestion or supplementation, since its role in insulin homeostasis is clear.

Background Patients with congenital generalized lipodystrophy (CGL) have very low levels of leptin and are described as having a voracious appetite. However, a direct comparison between CGL and eutrophic individuals is lacking, regarding both appetite parameters and acylated ghrelin, the hormone form that is active in acute food intake stimulation. The objective of the present study was to address whether and in what extent the subjective appetite parameters and acylated ghrelin response to a meal are affected in CGL individuals, in comparison to eutrophic individuals. Additionally, an obese group was included in the study, to allow the comparison between a leptin-resistant and a leptin-deficient condition on these aspects. Methods Eutrophic controls (EUT, n = 10), obese subjects (OB, n = 10) and CGL (n = 11) were fasted overnight and then received an ad libitum meal. Blood was collected and the visual analogue scale was applied before and 90 minutes after the meal. An additional blood sample was collected at 60 minutes for ghrelin determination. Results The CGL patients showed low fasting levels of leptin and adiponectin, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance. The caloric intake was similar among the 3 groups. However, both CGL (p = 0.02) and OB (p = 0.04) had shorter satiation times than EUT. The CGL patients also had lower satiety time (p = 0.01) and their sensation of hunger was less attenuated by the meal (p = 0.03). Fasting acylated ghrelin levels were lower in CGL than in EUT (p = 0.003). After the meal, the levels tended to decrease in EUT but not in CGL and OB individuals. Conclusion The data indicate that, although not hyperphagic, the CGL patients present appetite disturbances in relation to eutrophic individuals. Their low fasting levels of acylated ghrelin and the absence of the physiological drop after meal intake suggest a role of these disturbances in hunger attenuation and satiety but not in acute satiation.

Objective Crohn disease (CD) is characterized by chronic intestinal inflammation and various factors involved in its pathogenesis including oxidative stress. The oxidative stress in CD may compromise antioxidant nutrients, such as selenium. The aim of this study was to assess the status of selenium and its relationship with markers of oxidative stress in patients with CD in comparison to controls. Methods The study included 47 patients with CD (20 with active disease and 27 in remission) and 25 healthy individuals. Blood samples were collected for the analysis of plasma and erythrocyte selenium concentrations using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Selenoprotein P (SepP) was evaluated by sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GPx1) activity was assessed by using an automatic biochemistry analyzer, and the concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) was measured. Comparative analyses were performed using one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's post hoc test. For correlations, Pearson's coefficient test was used. The determinants for CD and lipid peroxidation were indicated by odds ratio. Results Plasma and erythrocyte selenium levels and SepP concentrations were lower in the CD patient groups than in the healthy group. GPx1 activity and the concentration of TBARS were significantly higher in the CD groups. In the univariate analysis, plasma and erythrocyte selenium and TBARS were associated with CD. Conclusion Patients with CD have impaired selenium status, which is related to the increased oxidative stress observed in these patients.

Summary Background & aims The Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) consists of a tool that assesses dietary inflammatory potential based on the assignment of an inflammatory score to a variety of nutrients, seasonings and bioactive compounds. Pro-inflammatory diets are associated to weight and abdominal fat excess. High Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist Circumference (WC) seem to contribute to a worse prognosis in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients. Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the relation between anthropometric indexes and body adiposity with the clinical condition and the Dietary Inflammatory Index of MS individuals. Methods This is a cross-sectional, analytical study that included 137 MS patients residing in the Brazilian northeast. Through a structured questionnaire and medical records consultation, we collected data on demographics, nutritional state, arterial pressure, clinical and dietary variables. Clinical variables included the MS type, number of pulse therapies and attack rate in the last two years, number of days of most recent pulse therapy and muscular strength assessment scores (MRC) and most recent disability level (EDSS). The nutritional state was evaluated based on BMI, WC, waist-hip ratio (WHR), Body Roundness Index (BRI), Body Shape z score Index (ABSIz) and body fat percentage (%BF). The DII was calculated according to a validated methodology. Results The ABSIz presented a positive correlation with regards to the EDSS score (r = 0.294. p = 0.001). WC and WHR presented a negative correlation in relation to the number of pulse therapy days (r = −0.255. p = 0.022 and r = −0.251. p = 0.024). BMI and %BF were not correlated to clinical variables (p > 0.05). The DII was positively correlated to the BMI in people with progressive MS (r = 0.556. p = 0.025). Conclusions The DII may interfere in the nutritional state of MS patients and the nutritional state may affect disability levels but it is necessary to establish which nutritional indicator can better predict the relation between DII and the clinical condition of MS patients.

The acai berry (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) is a typical fruit of the Amazon region. The consumption of the acai pulp has grown in both the national and international markets due to its high nutritional and energetic value. The pulp is also rich in phenolic compounds, mainly anthocyanin, giving it antioxidant properties and thereby also the status of being a functional food. This study aims to evaluate the immunological response in mice immunised via oral route with lyophilised acai pulp (LAP). Swiss mice were immunised by oral route with 200 µg of LAP. Specific antibodies (IgE and IgG1) were detected in the serum through the methods enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunoblotting with immunoprecipitation. The results therefore suggest that the acai berry can be considered a food allergen. Further studies are required to elucidate the immunological mechanisms involved in the allergic reaction to acai.

Studies about selenium status in patients with Turner syndrome (TS) are non-existent in the literature. The aim of this study was to evaluate selenium status in patients with TS, while considering the different ages of the studied population and the relation with body composition. In total, 33 patients with TS were evaluated and grouped according to their developmental stages (children, adolescents, and adults). Selenium concentrations in their plasma, erythrocytes, urine, and nails were determined by using hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry and erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity were measured by using Randox commercial kits. Additionally, height, weight, body fat percentage, waist circumference, and waist-height ratio were measured to characterize the patients. No differences in the selenium concentrations in the plasma, erythrocyte, urine, and nails or in the glutathione peroxidase activity were observed among the age groups (p > 0.05). The evaluated selenium levels were less than the established normal ones. The patients with larger waist circumference, body fat percentage, body mass index, and waist-height ratio showed lower glutathione peroxidase enzyme activity (p = 0.023). The present study shows that most patients with TS are deficient in selenium and that those with a greater accumulation of body fat have a lower GPx activity.

Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar, em seres humanos, se a exposição ao mercúrio acarreta alterações no estado nutricional relativo ao selênio que possam interferir na ativação do hormônio tireoidiano T3. Estas alterações poderiam ocorrer pela redução da disponibilidade do selênio, uma vez que este mineral é considerado um fator protetor contra a intoxicação pelo mercúrio, realizando ligações com o metal e desta forma, inibindo sua absorção; e portanto, a conversão do hormônio tiroidiano T4 em T3 poderia ser prejudicada, tendo em vista que é dependente de selenoproteínas. Alguns estudos têm avaliado a relação entre mercúrio e selênio na população brasileira, no entanto, não têm observado qual o efeito desta interação nos hormônios tiroidianos. A importância deste estudo está em detectar se existem estas alterações, e se elas forem observadas, sugerir formas de melhorar o estado nutricional relativo ao selênio, para minimizar a contaminação por mercúrio e os problemas acarretados pela redução dos níveis circulantes do hormônio tiroidiano ativo. Nesta pesquisa foram formados três grupos, um em Cubatão, um em Novo Airão na região amazônica e, como grupo controle, um em São Paulo. Foi observado que os grupos de Cubatão e São Paulo não se encontram em risco de intoxicação por mercúrio. Já o grupo formado em Novo Airão apresentou teores altos do metal. A ingestão de selênio em todos os grupos apresentou índices de inadequação de consumo acima dos 30%, no entanto, todos se apresentaram adequados em relação aos parâmetros bioquímicos do mineral, e também em relação às concentrações dos hormônios tireoidianos. Nesta pesquisa foi observado que na região amazônica, apesar dos valores elevados de mercúrio, este não provocou efeito no estado nutricional relativo ao selênio e no metabolismo normal dos hormônios tireoidianos. Mais estudos são necessários para que a dinâmica entre selênio e mercúrio seja completamente elucidada, principalmente em regiões onde possa ocorrer exposição aguda ao metal, onde se acredita que as consequências dessa exposição seriam deletérias sobre o status do mineral e suas funções. The aim of this work was to assess, in human beings, if mercury exposure may lead to changes in selenium status that may interfere with the conversion of active thyroid hormone T3. Changes in selenium status could occur for a reduction in its bioavailability, once the mineral is considered as a protection factor against mercury intoxication, by bounding to the metal and inhibiting its absorption, and so disturbing the conversion of T4 to T3, witch is dependent on selenoproteins. Some researches have assessed the relationship between mercury and selenium in Brazilian population, but these studies did not observed the effects of this interaction in the thyroid hormones concentrations. This research is important because it might detect if there is such interaction, and if it is observed, may suggest viable ways to ameliorate selenium status, reduce mercury contamination risk and the problems that might occur due to reduction on active thyroid hormones concentration. For this research three groups were formed, one in the city of Cubatão, one in Novo Airão in the amazon region, and, as a control group, one in São Paulo city. Is has been observed that the groups of Cubatão and São Paulo are not in risk for mercury intoxication. However, in Novo Airão, the levels of Mercury found were high. Analysis of selenium intake in all groups show that in all of than inadequate rate intake was over 30%, however, in every group biomarkers for selenium were adequate, as well as the thyroid hormone levels. Hence, this study observed that in Amazon region, in spite of high mercury levels, there is no effect in selenium status and in the thyroid hormone. Further investigations are needed to fully elucidate mercury and selenium interaction, especially in regions were an acute exposure to the metal might happen, when the consequences of this mey be deleterious to selenium status and its functions.
