Detecting vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGF-C), a kind of tumor biomarker, is of significant clinical importance in evaluating the prognosis of patients with cancer. However, laboratory analyses are usually not suitable for point-of-care testing because they are expensive and time consuming. In response to these challenges, we fabricated an origami paper-based microfluidic electrochemical device. To improve the specificity of VEGF-C detection, nanocomposites, synthesized by new methylene blue (NMB), amino-functional single-walled carbon nanotubes (NH2-SWCNTs), and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), were used to modify the surface of working electrodes. Results of electrochemical detection showed that the immunosensor had excellent linearity, ranging from 0.01 to 100 ng mL−1 (R2 = 0.988), and the limit of detection was 10 pg mL−1. To confirm the high specificity of the device under real-world conditions, we evaluated the device using clinical serum samples from our hospital. The results demonstrated that the device had an excellent performance and could provide a platform for real-time detection of cancers., Sun, Wang et al. report an origami paper-based immunosensor for the electrochemical detection of the VEGF-C biomarker in blood serum. The immunosensor is made by modifying the surface of working electrodes with new methylene blue, amino-functional single-walled carbon nanotubes, and gold nanoparticles and demonstrates excellent performance with a limit of detection in the range of picograms per milliliter.

This paper introduces a novel potential-resolved paper-based biosensor for simultaneous detection of multiple microRNAs (miRNAs) (taking miRNA-155 and miRNA-126 as examples) based on the bipolar electrode (BPE) electrochemiluminescence (ECL) strategy. The proposed multiple-channel paper-based sensing microfluidic platform was prepared by wax-printing technology, screen-printing method, and in situ Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) growth to form hydrophilic areas, hydrophobic boundaries, waterproof electronic bridge, driving electrode regions, and parallel bipolar electrode regions. CdTe quantum dots (QDs)-H2 and Au@g-C3N4 nanosheets (NSs)-DNA1 were used as dual electrochemiluminescence signal probes, and carboxylated Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles existed as carriers. CdTe QDs-H2/S2O82- and Au@g-C3N4 NSs-DNA1/S2O82- could exhibit two strong and stable ECL emissions at a drive voltage of 9 and 12 V, respectively, which can be used as effective potential-resolved signal tags. In addition, the proposed three-dimensional (3D) DNA nanomachine model and the target miRNA cycle strategy were used to achieve double amplification of electrochemiluminescence intensity. More importantly, the combination of the bipolar electrode system and the potential-resolved multitarget electrochemiluminescence method can greatly reduce the spatial interference between substances. The prepared ECL biosensor showed a favorable linear response for the detection of miRNA-155 and miRNA-126 with relatively low detection limits of 5.7 and 4.2 fM, respectively. With excellent sensitivity, the strategy may provide an efficient method for clinical application, especially in detection of trace multiple targets.

Because of numerous inherent and unrivaled features of nanofibers made of chitin, the second most plentiful natural-based polymer (after cellulose), including affordability, abundant nature, biodegradability, biocompatibility, commercial availability, flexibility, transparency, and extraordinary mechanical and physicochemical properties, chitin nanofibers (ChNFs) are being applied as one of the most appealing bionanomaterials in a myriad of fields. Herein, we exploited the beneficial properties offered by the ChNF paper to fabricate transparent, efficient, biocompatible, flexible, and miniaturized optical sensing bioplatforms via embedding/immobilizing various plasmonic nanoparticles (silver and gold nanoparticles), photoluminescent nanoparticles (CdTe quantum dots, carbon dots, and NaYF4:Yb3+@Er3+&SiO2 upconversion nanoparticles) along with colorimetric reagents (curcumin, dithizone, etc.) in the 3D nanonetwork scaffold of the ChNF paper. Several configurations, including 2D multi-wall and 2D cuvette patterns with hydrophobic barriers/walls and hydrophilic test zones/channels, were easily printed using laser printing technology or punched as spot patterns on the dried ChNF paper-based nanocomposites to fabricate the (bio)sensing platforms. A variety of (bio)chemicals as model analytes were used to confirm the efficiency and applicability of the fabricated ChNF paper-based sensing bioplatforms. The developed (bio)sensors were also coupled with smartphone technology to take the advantages of smartphone-based monitoring/sensing devices along with the Internet of Nano Things (IoNT)/the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) concepts for easy-to-use sensing applications. In the present article we report a new hybrid microfluidic device (hyFlow) comprising a disposable paper electrode and a three-dimensional (3D) printed plastic chip for the electrochemical detection of a magnetic bead-silver nanoparticle (MB-AgNP) bioconjugate. This hybrid device evolved due to the difficulty of incorporating micron-scale MBs into paper-only fluidic devices. Specifically, paper fluidic devices can entrap MB-containing conjugates within their cellulose or nitrocellulose fiber matrix. The hyFlow system was designed to minimize such issues and transport MB conjugates more efficiently to the electrochemical detection zone of the device. The hyFlow system retains the benefit of fluid transport by pressure-driven flow, however, no pump is required for its operation. The hyFlow device is capable of detecting either pre-formed MB-AgNP conjugates or conjugates formed in-situ formation. The detection limit of AgNPs using this device is 12 pM, which represents just 22 AgNPs per MB.

The aim of the current study was to investigate the effect of well-characterized TiO2 nanoparticles on DNA methylation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in vitro. Maximum non-toxic concentration of nanoparticles for PBMCs was determined by MTT assay. The effect of TiO2 nanoparticles at concentrations of 25–100 μg/ml on DNA methylation of PBMCs was investigated by measuring the %5-mC alterations through an ELISA assay. The physicochemical analysis showed that the TiO2 nanoparticles were crystalline, pure and in the anatase phase. Peaks related to Ti-O tensile vibrations were observed in the range of 1510 cm−1. The size of nanoparticles was in the range of 39–74 nm with an average hydrodynamic diameter of 43.82 nm. According to the results of the MTT test, 100 μg/ml was found to be maximum non-toxic concentration. The %5-mC in treated PBMCs revealed that TiO2 nanoparticles could lead to DNA hypomethylation in PBMCs. The %5-mC difference compared with the negative control was found to be 2.07 ± 1.02% (P = 0.03). The difference of %5-mC between the 25 and 100 μg/ml concentration of nanoparticles was statistically significant (P = 0.02). The results of the current study show that the TiO2 nanoparticles cause DNA hypomethylation in PBMCs in a dose-response manner. Therefore, it is recommended to evaluate the effects of cytotoxicity and epigenotoxicity of commonly used nanoparticles before their use.

A newly modified paper-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (P-ELISA) was established by immobilizing more proteins on the paper surface through an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) reaction. In addition, introducing graphene oxide (GO) sheets, Au nanoparticles (AuNps) and two primary antibodies (Ab1s) led to signal amplification and cost reduction. In this study, a novel photoluminescence material for the detection of tributyltin (TBT) was developed by using a paper-based nanocomposite system. For this purpose, molecularly imprinted polymeric nanoparticles (MIN) were synthesized with mini-emulsion polymerization technique. Graphene quantum dots obtained by the hydrothermal pyrolysis were immobilized to the nanoparticle surface via EDC-NHS coupling. The fabrication of sensing platform for TBT can be divided into two steps that are the preparation of nanocomposite and the applying the nanocomposite onto nitrocellulose membrane. The selectivity constant and association kinetics were calculated to analyze the interaction of TBT with immobilized MINs. The results proved that the developed nanosensor is promising for the determination of TBT with high selectivity and sensitivity reaching a detection limit of 0.23 ppt in seawater. In this study, we investigated the airborne particles released during paper printing and paper shredding processes in an attempt to characterize and differentiate these particles. Particle characteristics were studied with real time instruments (RTIs) to measure concentrations and with samplers to collect particles for subsequent microscopy and cytotoxicity analysis. The particles released by paper shredding were evaluated for cytotoxicity by using in vitro human lung epithelial cell models. A substantial amount of particles were released during both the shredding and printing processes. We found that the printing process caused substantial release of particles with sizes of less than 300 nm in the form of metal granules and graphite. These released particles contained various elements including Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, N, K, P, S and Si. The particles released by the paper shredding processes were primarily nanoparticles and had a peak size between 27.4 nm and 36.5 nm. These paper particles contained elements including Al, Br Ca, Cl, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, N, Na, Ni P, S and Si, as determined by scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and single-particle inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (SP-ICP-MS) analysis. Although various metals were identified in the paper particles, these particles did not elicit cytotoxicity to simian virus-transformed bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS2B) and immortalized normal human bronchial epithelial cells (HBE1). However, future studies should investigate other cytotoxicity effects of these paper particles in various types of lung cells to identify potential health effects of the particles.

Paper-based strain sensors have attracted attention as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach to wearable electronic devices. This paper proposes a paper-based strain sensor created solely using hand-painting, which is a simple, equipment-free process utilized in green electronics. Commercial printing paper is coated with polydimethylsiloxane diluted with heptane, which provides moisture resistance and mechanical robustness while increasing the hydrophobicity of the surface. The electrodes and conduction channels are fabricated using a pencil for graphite deposition and a brush for the deposition of tin-doped indium oxide nanoparticles, respectively. With a gauge factor of 41.98 in tensile strain tests and 21.36 in compressive strain tests, our strain sensor exhibits a good sensitivity that is similar to that of previously reported paper-based sensors. We also demonstrate that our proposed strain sensor can be used as a weak motion detection device for humans and robots.

The use of paper as a sustainable packaging material is favored, but it lacks sufficient barrier properties in terms of water repellence and oil resistance. Novel approaches consider active packaging materials or coatings with controlled release providing additional functionality for delivery of specific components to the surface. In this study, the development of a waterborne coating with organic nanoparticles and encapsulated sunflower oils is presented as a system for thermal release of the oil and on-demand tuning of the final barrier properties of the paper substrate. After synthesis of the nanoparticles, it seems that the encapsulation of various grades of sunflower oil (i.e., either poly-unsaturated or mono-unsaturated) strongly affects the encapsulation efficiency and thermal release profiles. The water contact angles are controlled by the oil release and chemical surface composition of the coating upon thermal heating. The oil resistance of the paper improves as a more continuous oil film is formed during thermal release. In particular, the chemical surface composition of the paper coatings is detailed by means of micro-Raman spectroscopy and surface imaging, which provide an analytical quantification tool to evaluate surface coverage, oil delivery, and variations in organic coating moieties. Significance: Personalized medicine requires the tracking of an individual’s metabolite levels over time to detect anomalies and evaluate the body’s response to medications. Implanted sensors offer effective means to continuously monitor specific metabolite levels, provided they are accurate, stable over long time periods, and do no harm. Aim: Four types of hydrogel embedded with pH-sensitive sensors were evaluated for their accuracy, sensitivity, reversibility, longevity, dynamic response, and consistency in static versus dynamic conditions and long-term storage. Approach: Raman spectroscopy was first used to calibrate the intensity of pH-sensitive peaks of the Raman-active hydrogel sensors in a static pH environment. The dynamic response was then assessed for hydrogels exposed to changing pH conditions within a flow cell. Finally, the static pH response after 5 months of storage was determined. Results: All four types of hydrogels allowed the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensors to respond to the pH level of the local environment without introducing interfering signals, resulting in consistent calibration curves. When the pH level changed, the probes in the gels were slow to reach steady-state, requiring several hours, and response times were found to vary among hydrogels. Only one type, poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA), lasted five months without significant degradation of dynamic range. Conclusions: While all hydrogels appear to be viable candidates as biocompatible hosts for the SERS sensing chemistry, pHEMA was found to be most functionally stable over the long interval tested. Poly(ethylene glycol) hydrogels exhibit the most rapid response to changing pH. Since these two gel types are covalently cross-linked and do not generally degrade, they both offer advantages over sodium alginate for use as implants.

Simple and visual quantitative detection of foodborne pathogens can effectively reduce the outbreaks of foodborne diseases. Herein, we developed a simple and sensitive quantum dot (QD)-based paper device for visual and quantitative detection of Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7 based on immunomagnetic separation and nanoparticle dissolution-triggered signal amplification. In this study, E. coli O157:H7 was magnetically separated and labeled with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and the AgNP labels can be converted into millions of Ag ions, which subsequently quench the fluorescence of QDs in the paper strip, which along with the readout can be visualized and quantified by the change in length of fluorescent quenched band. Owing to the high capture efficiency and effective signal amplification, as low as 500 cfu mL−1 of E. coli O157:H7 could be easily detected by naked eyes. Furthermore, this novel platform was successfully applied to detect E. coli O157:H7 in spiked milk samples with good accuracy, indicating its potential in the detection of foodborne pathogens in real samples.

A molecularly imprinted paper-based analytical device (MIP-μPAD) was developed for the sensing of bisphenol A (BPA). The platform was screen-printed onto a filter paper support, where the electrodes and the fluorescence μPADs were designed. Owing to its dual electrochemical and fluorescence responses, molecularly imprinted curcumin nanoparticles were used to sense BPA. The μPAD design was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and electrochemical techniques. The sensor design comprised a wide linear range from 1 to 200 μg L−1 with limits of detection of 0.47 ± 0.2 and 0.62 ± 0.3 μg L−1 (LOD, S/N = 3) for electrochemical and fluorescence sensing, respectively. Furthermore, the system showed good analytical performance such as selectivity, stability, and reproducibility. The feasibility of the MIP-μPAD was demonstrated for the sensing of BPA in seawater, foods, and polycarbonate plastic packaged water with recovery values of 97.2 and 101.8%.

Plasmonic metafilms have been widely utilized to generate vivid colors, but making them both active and flexible simultaneously remains a great challenge. Here flexible active plasmonic metafilms constructed by printing electrochromic nanoparticles onto ultrathin metal films (, Commercially available printing techniques offer fullyprinted flexible plasmonic metafilms, which show electrically‐tunable omni‐ or bi‐directional color dynamics engineered with structural geometries. Such activelycontrolled directional color dynamics in flexible plasmonics significantly unlocks the full potential of plasmonics for flexible/wearable devices.

Significance: Decreasing the oxygen consumption rate (OCR) of tumor cells is a powerful method for ameliorating tumor hypoxia. However, quantifying the change in OCR is challenging in complex experimental systems. Aim: We present a method for quantifying the OCR of two tumor cell lines using oxygen-sensitive dual-emissive boron nanoparticles (BNPs). We hypothesize that our BNP results are equivalent to the standard Seahorse assay. Approach: We quantified the spectral emissions of the BNP and accounted for external oxygen diffusion to quantify OCR over 24 h. The BNP-computed OCR of two breast cancer cell lines, E0771 and 4T07, were compared with their respective Seahorse assays. Both cell lines were also irradiated to quantify radiation-induced changes in the OCR. Results: Using a Bland–Altman analysis, our BNPs OCR was equivalent to the standard Seahorse assay. Moreover, in an additional experiment in which we irradiated the cells at their 50% survival fraction, the BNPs were sensitive enough to quantify 24% reduction in OCR after irradiation. Conclusions: Our results conclude that the BNPs are a viable alternative to the Seahorse assay for quantifying the OCR in cells. The Bland–Altman analysis showed that these two methods result in equivalent OCR measurements. Future studies will extend the OCR measurements to complex systems including 3D cultures and in vivo models, in which OCR measurements cannot currently be made.

A novel fluorescence strategy based on the outstanding catalytic capability of CuS nanoparticles (CuSNPs) has been developed for highly sensitive and specific determination of o,o-dimethyl-o-2,2-dichlorovinyl phosphate (DDVP) under enzyme-free and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-free conditions. In the presence of DDVP, CuSNPs can catalyze non-fluorescence substratum of Amplex red (AR) into resorufin, which exhibits fluorescence emission at 584 nm under excitation at 540 nm. The sensing system exhibits outstanding specificity and only responds to DDVP and no other organophosphorus pesticides (OPs). A wide linear range is obtained from 0.0001 to 0.1 μg/mL, and the limit of detection (LOD) is 0.1 ng/mL. Furthermore, paper-based test strips have been constructed for visual detection of DDVP under ultraviolet light irradiation. By integrating a smartphone installed with Color Picker APP, point-of-care detection with quantitative determination is realized, demonstrating substantial potential applications of the as-developed assay for in situ detection.

In this study, hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets enriched with hydroxyl groups (h-BN-OH) were successfully grafted on the surface of cellulose fibers after the simple and effective exfoliation and oxidation of bulk h-BN. OH groups of h-BN-OH and the ones presented on the surface of cellulose fibers interacted via hydrogen bonding. Both spectroscopic (FT-IR, XRD) and microscopic (TEM, SEM, and atomic force microscopy (AFM)) methods results proved the successful functionalization of the cellulose fibers with the nanomaterial. Modified cellulose fibers were used to prepare paper sheets samples with different concentrations of the nanomaterial (1 wt %, 2 wt %, and 3 wt %). All the samples were tested for the antibacterial properties via the colony forming unit method and exhibited good performance against both Gram-negative (E. coli) and Gram-positive (S. epidermidis) model bacteria. Additionally, the influence of the volume of working bacterial suspension on the antibacterial efficiency of the obtained materials was examined. The results showed significantly better antibacterial performance when the volume of bacterial suspension was reduced. Mechanical properties of the paper samples with and without nanofiller were also characterized. Tensile strength, tearing strength, and bursting strength of the paper samples containing only 2 wt % of the nanofiller were improved by 60%, 61%, and 118% in comparison to the control paper samples, respectively. Furthermore, the nanofiller improved the thermal properties of the composite paper&mdash, the heat release rate decreased by up to 11.6%. Therefore, the composite paper can be further explored in a wide range of antibacterial materials, such as packaging or paper coatings

Globally, rapid development of antibiotic resistance amongst pathogens has led to limited treatment options and high indirect costs to health management. There is a need to avoid misuse of available antibiotics and to develop rapid, affordable and accessible diagnostic technologies to detect drug resistance even in resource limited settings. This study reports the development of instrument-free point-of-care devices for detection of antibiotic resistance for rapid diagnosis of drug resistance in the penicillin, cephalosporin and carbapenem groups of antibiotics. The simple paper-based devices for flow through assay determine the presence of resistant bacteria in a sample by a visible colour change within 30 minutes. At the center of this technology is the unique sensing nanomaterial comprising of core-shell nanoparticles layered with specific antibiotics. The core is comprised of chitosan nanoparticles of size ∼15 nm coated with the starch-iodine indicator to form a shell increasing the size to ∼47 nm. The test strip is coated with the nanoparticles, air-dried and overlayed with the required antibiotic. In the presence of penicillin, cephalosporin and carbapenem resistant bacteria, the core-shell nanoparticles undergo a visible colour change from blue to white. The core-shell nanoparticles were deposited on paper to form a point-of-care device. Devices were developed to screen for three main classes of antibiotics namely penicillins, cephalosporins and carbapenems. The devices were validated using standard resistant and susceptible ATCC strains in three different sample types, pure colony, broth culture and saline suspensions. The change of colour from blue to white was considered a positive test. The time of detection was found to be 30 min, while the limit of detection was 105 cfu ml-1. The device exhibited 100% sensitivity and specificity with known resistant and susceptible cultures not only from pure colonies but also from direct samples of spiked saline suspensions with graded confounding factors of albumin, glucose, and urea. The inter-device reproducibility and storage stability of the devices was established. The developed point-of-care devices have potential as screening devices for antimicrobial resistance.

Exploring efficient luminophores in the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) system is highly desired to pursue a sensitive ECL sensing platform. Herein, the black phosphorus nanosheets (BP NSs) with excellent ECL properties are investigated and serve as the luminophore with the coreactant of peroxydisulfate (S2O82-) solution. Moreover, owing to the overlapping of emission and absorbance spectra, effective resonance energy transfer (RET) is realized between the BP NSs and the introduced Au nanoparticles. In order to achieve the portable and miniaturized developing trends for the paper-based ECL sensing platform, a paper-based perovskite solar cell (PSC) device is designed to act as the power source to replace the commonly utilized expensive and cumbersome electrochemical workstation. Benefiting from that, a PSC driven paper-based constant potential ECL-RET sensing platform is constructed, thereby realizing sensitive microRNAs (miRNAs) detection. What's more, to attain the preferable analytical performance, the duplex-specific nuclease (DSN) is also introduced to assist the target recycling signal amplification strategy. Based on this, highly sensitive detection of miRNA-107 with a range from 0.1 pM to 15 nM is achieved by this designed sensing platform. Most importantly, this work not only pioneers a precedent for developing a high-sensitivity PSC triggered ECL sensing platform but also explores the application prospect of BP nanomaterial in the field of bioanalysis.

Hypothesis Strongly degraded cellulosic artworks usually need deacidification and consolidation. Alkaline nanoparticles are known to be effective in neutralizing the acidity, while cellulose nanocrystals have the potential to be used as compatible and effective strengthening agents. Experiments We have grafted cellulose nanocrystals with oleic acid using a 1′1-carbonyldiimidazole-mediated procedure, to increase their dispersibility in organic solvents, and synthesized Ca(OH)2 or CaCO3 nanoparticles via a solvothermal process. Grafted nanocellulose and alkaline nanoparticles were used to prepare ethanol-based “hybrids”. Prior to the application, the physico-chemical properties of nanocellulose dispersions and “hybrids” were studied by rheology and small-angle X-ray scattering. Findings Cellulose nanocrystals were effectively grafted and stably dispersed in ethanol. It was shown that the use of ethanol as a dispersing medium, and the addition of alkaline nanoparticles act in a synergistic way, increasing the interactions between grafted cellulose nanocrystals, leading to the formation of clusters. These dispersions are thixotropic, a behavior particularly appealing to conservation purposes, since they can be applied in the liquid state, or, when a more confined application is required, they can be applied in a gel-like state. As a result of the application, an improvement in the mechanical properties of paper and an increase of pH were obtained.

In this work, a lab-on-paper cathode photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform was constructed for ultrasensitive microRNA-141 (miRNA-141) assay using cascaded multiple photo-active structures as signal generators and hemin/Pt nanoparticle (Pt NP) trunk-branching-decorated DNA dendrimers as signal reinforcers. Specifically, pyramid-like Cu2O was first in situ grown on the Au nanoparticle-functionalized tangled cellulose fibers network, followed by the sensitization of trepang-like BiVO4-Bi2S3 heterostructures, forming the cascaded sensitization structures. Then, the DNA dendrimer was introduced into the photocathode sensing interface by coupling the duplex-specific-nuclease (DSN)-induced target recycling reaction with multiple-branched hybridization chain reaction (MHCR). The programmed target recycling procedures propelled using DSN guaranteed the highly amplified transduction of miRNA-141 to the exposed initiator strand, which triggered the cascaded MHCR accompanied by the formation of the DNA dendrimer with unique trunk-branching structures. Finally, the hemin/Pt NP trunk-branching-decorated DNA dendrimer (HPTD) was acquired by the assembly of Pt NPs and hemin on the trunk and branch, respectively. The resulting HPTD with the synergy catalysis of Pt NPs and hemin could efficiently catalyze the decomposition of H2O2 for in situ generation of O2 as the electron acceptor, leading to an enhanced photocurrent response. Based on the target-dependent photocurrent enhancement, ultrasensitive determination of miRNA-141 was realized with persuasive selectivity, high stability, and excellent reproducibility. Thus, the proposed paper-based cathode PEC sensing platform possessed promising application prospect in clinical miRNA diagnosis.

The conservation of textiles is a challenge due to the often fast degradation that results from the acidity combined with a complex structure that requires remediation actions to be conducted at several length scales. Nanomaterials have lately been used for various purposes in the conservation of cultural heritage. The advantage with these materials is their high efficiency combined with a great control. Here, we provide an overview of the latest developments in terms of nanomaterials-based alternatives, namely inorganic nanoparticles and nanocellulose, to conventional methods for the strengthening and deacidification of cellulose-based materials. Then, using the case of iron-tannate dyed cotton, we show that conservation can only be addressed if the mechanical strengthening is preceded by a deacidification step. We used CaCO3 nanoparticles to neutralize the acidity, while the stabilisation was addressed by a combination of nanocellulose, and silica nanoparticles, to truly tackle the complexity of the hierarchical nature of cotton textiles. Silica nanoparticles enabled strengthening at the fibre scale by covering the fibre surface, while the nanocellulose acted at bigger length scales. The evaluation of the applied treatments, before and after an accelerated ageing, was assessed by tensile testing, the fibre structure by SEM and the apparent colour changes by colourimetric measurements. We describe the contribution of our in vivo multiphoton microscopy (MPM) studies over the last ten years with DermaInspect® (JenLab, Germany), a CE-certified medical tomograph based on detection of fluorescent biomolecules, to the assessment of possible penetration of nanoparticulate zinc oxide in sunscreen through human skin. At the time we started our work, there was a strong movement for the precautionary principle to be applied to the use of nanoparticles in consumer products due to a lack of knowledge. The combined application of different MPM modalities, including spectral imaging, fluorescence lifetime imaging, second harmonic fluorescence generation, and phosphorescence microscopy, has provided overwhelming evidence that nanoparticle zinc oxide particles do not penetrate human skin when applied to various skin types with a range of methods of topical sunscreen application. MPM has also been used to study the viable epidermal morphology and redox state in supporting the safe use of topical zinc oxide nanoparticles. The impact of this work is emphasized by the recent proposed rule by the United States FDA on Sunscreen Drug Products for Over-the-Counter Human Use, which listed only zinc oxide and titanium dioxide of the currently marketed products to be generally recognized as safe and effective. Filtration is a promising water treatment method to purify drinking water. To develop highly efficient drinking water filter paper, water-resistant cellulose foam paper with a high wet strength property was fabricated using diverse metal oxide (e.g., copper oxide (CuO), zinc oxide (ZnO), and silver oxide (Ag2O)) nanoparticles. These nanoparticles were synthesized using the hydrothermal reaction method. Their morphological structures were studied using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The presence of coated nanoparticles on the cellulose foam filter was verified by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) methods. The antibacterial performance of different types of modified cellulose foam filters was studied against E. coli, P. aeruginosa, B. subtilis, and B. cereus strains using the zone of inhibition test. The antibacterial profile of the cellulose foam filter impregnated with Ag2O nanoparticles, when tested against different types of bacteria, exhibited higher antibacterial activity than the cellulose foam filter impregnated with ZnO and CuO nanoparticles.

Nowadays, environmentally friendly synthesis pathways for preserving the environment and minimizing waste are strongly required. Herein, we propose filter paper as a convenient scaffold for chemical reactions. To demonstrate this novel approach, Prussian Blue Nanoparticles (PBNPs) were synthesized on filter paper by utilizing few μL of its precursors without external inputs, i.e. pH, voltage, reducing agents, and without producing waste as well. The functional paper, named “Paper Blue”, is successfully applied in the sensing field, exploiting the reduction of hydrogen peroxide at low applied potential. The eco-designed “Paper Blue” was combined with wax- and screen-printing to manufacture a reagentless electrochemical point-of-care device for diabetes self-monitoring, by using glucose oxidase as the biological recognition element. Blood glucose was linearly detected for a wide concentration range up to 25 mM (450 mg/dL), demonstrating its suitability for management of diabetes and glucose-related diseases. The Paper Blue-based biosensor demonstrated a correlation coefficient of 0.987 with commercial glucose strips (Bayer Contour XT). The achieved results demonstrated the effectiveness of this approach, which is also extendible to other (bio)systems to be applied in catalysis, remediation, and diagnostics.

Several solution-based methods have recently been adapted for use in paper substrates for enzymatic amplification to increase the number of copies of DNA sequences. There is limited information available about the impact of a paper matrix on DNA amplification by enzymatic processes, and about how to optimize conditions to maximize yields. The work reported herein provides insights about the impact of physicochemical properties of a paper matrix, using nuclease-assisted amplification by exonuclease III and nicking endonuclease Nt. Bbv, and a quantum dot (QD) - based Forster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) assay to monitor the extent of amplification. The influence of several properties of paper on amplification efficiency and kinetics were investigated, such as surface adsorption of reactants, and pore size. Additional factors that impact amplification processes such as target length and the packing density of oligonucleotide probes on the nanoparticle surfaces were also studied. The work provides guidance for development of more efficient enzymatic target-recycling DNA amplification methods in paper substrates.

In this paper, a new and facile method for the electrochemical determination of l-tyrosine was designed. First, 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane-functionalized silica nanoparticles were added to a paper disc. Then, the banana peel tissue and the mediator potassium hexacyanoferrate were dropped onto the paper, respectively. The modified paper disc was placed on the top of the graphite screen printed electrode and electrochemical characterization of this biosensor was studied by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods. The effective parameters like pH, banana peel tissue percentage, and the amount of mediator loading were optimized. l-tyrosine measurements were done by differential pulse voltammetry with a little sample (3 μL) for analysis. The biosensor showed a linear response for l-tyrosine in the wide concentration range of 0.05-600 μM and a low detection limit about 0.02 μM because of the co-catalytic effect of enzyme and nanoparticles. The stability of the biosensor and its selectivity were evaluated. This biosensor was applied for the voltammetric determination of l-tyrosine in the blood plasma sample. The results of the practical application study were comparable with the standard method (HPLC). In conclusion, a simple, inexpensive, rapid, sensitive and selective technique was successfully applied to the l-tyrosine analysis of the little samples.

In the present work, we report the synthesis of chitosan:starch‑silver nanoparticle (Cht:St-AgNPs) coated papers for antimicrobial packaging applications. The starch-assisted synthesized St-AgNPs are spherical in shape with an average particle size of 7 nm. Chitosan was mixed into the synthesized St-AgNPs solution with different ratios of 9:1, 8:2, 7:3, and 5:5 by weight. Further, the influence of different ratios of Cht:St-AgNPs on the various paper properties such as mechanical properties, water and oil resistance, and antimicrobial activities was investigated. It was observed that the properties of the coated papers were strongly dependent on the composition of Cht:St-AgNPs. The Cht:St-AgNPs-coated paper prepared with the ratio of 9:1 showed excellent mechanical properties and good resistance properties against water and oil. The Cht:St-AgNPs coated papers showed a remarkable enhancement in mechanical strength, oil and water resistance, and antibacterial and antifungal activity, which can make them a potential candidate for functional antimicrobial packaging applications.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were directly synthesized and anchored on lignocellulose fiber without an external immobilizing agent via a facile green approach using unbleached kraft (UBK) softwood pulp. The obtained AuNPs were confirmed by UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The antioxidant behavior of the as-prepared AuNP-UBK fiber nanocomposite was evaluated by free radical scavenging of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl hydrate (DPPH). The nanocomposite fiber exhibited greatly enhanced radical scavenging activity compared to that of the pure fiber. As a consequence, AuNP-UBK nanocomposite paper showed exceptional antioxidant performance with a radical scavenging rate of over 98%, which is attributed to the synergistic effects of adsorption by the fiber–fiber network and subsequent catalytic activity of the AuNPs. This research indicated that AuNP-UBK fiber nanocomposites could be a new candidate for antioxidant active packaging for use in food preservation.

As a cost-effective approach for detecting trace amounts of pesticides, filter paper-based SERS sensors have been the subject of intensive research. One of the hurdles to overcome is the difficulty of retaining nanoparticles on the surface of the paper because of the hydrophilic nature of the cellulose fibers in paper. This reduces the sensitivity and reproducibility of paper-based SERS sensors due to the low density of nanoparticles and short retention time of analytes on the paper surface. In this study, filter paper was treated with alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) to modify its property from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. AKD treatment increased the contact angle of the aqueous silver nanoparticle (AgNP) dispersion, which consequently increased the density of AgNPs. The retention time of the analyte was also increased by preventing its rapid absorption into the filter paper. The SERS signal was strongly enhanced by the increased number of SERS hot spots owing to the increased density of AgNPs on a small contact area of the filter surface. The reproducibility and sensitivity of the SERS signal were optimized by controlling the distribution of AgNPs on the surface of the filter paper by adjusting the concentration of the AgNP solution. Using this SERS sensor with a hydrophobicity-modified filter paper, the spot-to-spot variation of the SERS intensity of 25 spots of 4-aminothiophenol was 6.19%, and the limits of detection of thiram and ferbam as test pesticides were measured to be 0.46 nM and 0.49 nM, respectively. These proof-of-concept results indicate that this paper-based SERS sensor can serve for highly sensitive pesticide detection with low cost and easy fabrication.

Sewage sludge/biosolids are by-wastes of municipal and industrial wastewater treatment. As sources of nutrients (C, N, P) they are widely used in intensive farming where large supplementation of organic matter to maintain fertility and enhance crop yields is needed. However, according to the report of European Commission published in 2010, only 39% of produced sewage sludge is recycled into agriculture in the European Union. This situation occurs mainly due to the fact, that the sewage sludge may contain a dangerous volume of different contaminants. For over decades, a great deal of attention has been focused on total concentration of few heavy metals and pathogenic bacteria Salmonella and Escherichia coli. The Sewage Sludge Directive (86/278/EEC) regulates the allowable limits of Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, Cd, Cr and Hg and pathogens and allows for recovery of sludge on land under defined sanitary and environmentally sound conditions. In this paper, a review on quality of sewage sludge based on the publications after 2010 has been presented. Nowadays there are several papers focusing on new serious threats to human health and ecosystem occurring in sewage sludge – both chemicals (such as toxic trace elements – Se, Ag, Ti; nanoparticles; polyaromatic hydrocarbons; polychlorinated biphenyl; perfluorinated surfactants, polycyclic musks, siloxanes, pesticides, phenols, sweeteners, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, benzotriazoles) and biological traits (Legionella, Yersinia, Escherichia coli O157:H7)., Highlights • Sewage sludge contains organic and inorganic contaminants not regulated by law. • Total content of many compounds (heavy metals) is not a reliable indicator of toxicity. • Regular monitoring is crucial to limit a release of toxic substances to ecosystem.

Nanocomposite (NC) papers using bifunctional nanoparticles are prepared for 3D cell growth experiments. Cells show better affinity to NC papers than to paper itself and differentiate the chemical group on the external surface of the nanoparticles. Cells possess spherical shaped morphology and form agglomerates onto the (NC) papers like as observed by cell growth in 3D materials. Furthermore, the preparation of “Janus” paper and the differentiation of its two distinct faces by cells is presented.

ChemSusChem 2017, 10, 2560. https://doi.org/10.1002/cssc.201700576., Continuous-flow nanocatalysis based on metal nanoparticle catalyst-anchored flow reactors has recently provided an excellent platform for effective chemical manufacturing. However, there has been limited progress in porous structure design and recycling systems for metal nanoparticle-anchored flow reactors to create more efficient and sustainable catalytic processes. In this study, traditional paper is used for a highly efficient, recyclable, and even renewable flow reactor by tailoring the ultrastructures of wood pulp. The “paper reactor” offers hierarchically interconnected micro- and nanoscale pores, which can act as convective-flow and rapid-diffusion channels, respectively, for efficient access of reactants to metal nanoparticle catalysts. In continuous-flow, aqueous, room-temperature catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol, a gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-anchored paper reactor with hierarchical micro/nanopores provided higher reaction efficiency than state-of-the-art AuNP-anchored flow reactors. Inspired by traditional paper materials, successful recycling and renewal of AuNP-anchored paper reactors were also demonstrated while high reaction efficiency was maintained.

Monodisperse aqueous upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) were covalently immobilized on aldehyde modified cellulose paper via reductive amination to evaluate the multiplexing capacity of luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET) between UCNPs and quantum dots (QDs). This is the first account of a multiplexed bioassay strategy that demonstrates the principle of use of a single form of UCNP as donor and three different color emitting QDs as acceptors to concurrently determine three analytes. Broad absorbance profiles of green, orange and red QDs that spanned from the first exciton absorption peak to the UV region were in overlap with a blue emission band from UCNPs composed of NaYF4 that was doped with 30% Yb3+, 0.5% Tm3+, allowing for LRET that was stimulated using 980 nm near-infrared radiation. The characteristic narrow and well-defined emission peaks of UCNPs and QDs allowed for the collection of luminescence from each nanoparticle using a band-pass optical filter and an epi-fluorescence microscope. The LRET system was used for the concurrent detection of uidA, Stx1A and tetA gene fragments with selectivity even in serum samples, and reached limits of detection of 26 fmol, 56 fmol and 76 fmol, respectively.

A novel microfluidic paper-based analytic device (μPAD) biosensor is developed for sensitive and visualized detection of glucose. This biosensor is easily fabricated using the wax printing technique, with a hybrid nanocomplex composed of dual enzymes glucose oxidase (GOx) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and Cu3(PO4)2 inorganic nanocrystals incorporated in the detection zones. The hybrid nanocomplex is found to exhibit a flower-like structure, which allows co-immobilization of these two enzymes in a biocompatible environment. These nanoflowers not only preserve the activity and enhance the stability of the enzymes, but also facilitate the transport of the substrates between the two enzymes. The biosensor is demonstrated to enable rapid and sensitive quantification of glucose in the concentration range of 0.1–10 mM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 25 μM. It is also shown to be applicable to colorimetric quantitative detection of glucose in human serum and whole blood samples, implying its potential for clinical applications.

A highly sensitive enzyme inhibition analytical platform was established firstly based on paper-supported 3D interwoven AuPd-reduced graphene oxide (rGO) network (NW) for real-time and in situ analysis of H2S released from cancer cells. The novel paper working electrode (PWE) with large electric conductivity, effective surface area and unusual biocompatibility, was fabricated via controllably assembling rGO and AuPd alloy nanoparticles onto the surface of cellulose fibers and into the macropores of paper, which was employed as affinity matrix for horseradish peroxidase (HRP) loading and cells capture. It was the superior performances of AuPd-rGO-NW-PWE that made the loaded HRP exhibit excellent electrocatalytic behavior to H2O2, bring the rapid enhancement of current response. After releasing H2S, the current response would be obviously decreased due to the efficient inhibition effect of H2S on HRP activity. The inhibition degree of HRP was directly proportional to the amount of H2S, and so, the flux of H2S released from cells could be recorded availably. Thus, this proposed enzyme inhibition cyto-sensor could be applied for efficient recording of the release of H2S, which had potential utility to cellular biology and pathophysiology.

Estazolam (EST) is a common sedative-hypnotic drug with a risk of abuse. Therefore, rapid on-site detection of EST is necessary to control the abuse of EST. In this paper, a fast, simple, and sensitive method is demonstrated for the detection of EST in both water and beverages, using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) techniques. Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) assembled on the filter paper as a SERS substrate exhibit good applicability and practicality. At the same time, density functional theory (DFT) is used to assign the vibration mode of the EST molecules, which can be used as a guide for subsequent experiments. The lowest detectable concentration of EST in aqueous solution can be as low as 5 mg/L, and signal uniformity is excellent (RSD687 = 5.56%, RSD1000 = 4.35%). In addition, EST components artificially added to orange juice and pomegranate juice can be effectively detected by simple pretreatment with a minimum detection concentration as low as 10 mg/L. Therefore, this study found that the use of Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles paper-based SERS substrate provides a quick and easy method for the detection of illegally added drugs in beverages.

This paper introduces a paper-based closed Au-bipolar electrode (BPE) biosensing system for the rapid and sensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) detection of miRNA-155. This microfluidic paper-based sensing platform is formed by wax-printing technology, screen printing method and in-situ Au nanoparticles (NPs) growth to form hydrophilic cells, hydrophobic boundaries, water proof electronic bridge, driving electrode regions and bipolar electrode regions. For rapid and sensitive detection, the cathode of bipolar electrode was modified with the prepared DNA (S1)–AuPd NPs by hybridization chain reaction, in which the target could initiate multiple cycles reaction to load more AuPd NPs which catalyzed H2O2 reduction. In addition, a classical ECL system tris (2,2′-bipyridine) ruthenium (II)- tripropylamine (Ru(bpy)32+/TPrA) exists at the anode of the bipolar electrode. Due to the charge balance between the anode and the cathode of BPE, the ECL signal response of Ru(bpy)32+/TPrA system was enhanced in the reporting cell. The intensity of ECL was quantitatively correlated with the concentration of miRNA-155 in the range of 1 pM–10 μM with the detection limit 0.67 pM. Moreover, this method paves a novel way for highly sensitive detection of miRNA-155 in clinical application.

In recent years, paper-based Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates have received extensive attention in the field of rapid analysis. However, obtaining quantitative SERS results is still challenging because of the inferior uniformity originating from the irregular morphology of the filter paper. In this work, a novel paper-fluidic SERS sensor was developed and its in-depth applications in the real-word quantitative analysis of contaminants in complex matrices were demonstrated. In particular, the Au@Ag core-shell nanospheres were labeled with an internal standard molecule to successfully normalize the fluctuation of the SERS signal caused by the microstructure of the filter paper, which could significantly improve the detection accuracy and accomplish the SERS quantitative analysis. In addition, a facile and robust strategy for the fabrication of a paper-based SERS sensor, which uses a dropper and mask to transfer the nanoparticle monolayers, was developed. This convenient and flexible approach effectively achieved a precise patterned assembly of nanoparticles on the filter paper. Furthermore, the paper-fluidic SERS sensor was fabricated by cutting and packaging for two detection modes, i.e., lateral-flow and vertical-flow, which generates the functionalization of the paper-based SERS substrate. Both detection modes integrated sample pretreatment and sample enrichment with SERS detection were applied to accurately detect the pesticide thiram in a complex sample of orange juice with pulp. In summary, this paper-fluidic SERS sensor with a simple preparation process and integrated functions is an ideal candidate for real sample analysis without pretreatment.

The rapid development of and the large market for medical diagnostics necessitate point-of-care testing (POCT) with superior sensitivity, miniaturization, multiple functionalities and high integration. Thus, flexible substrates with complex structures that provide multiple functions are in demand. Herein, we present multistructured pseudo-papers (MSPs) as a platform for building flexible microfluidics. Flexible and freestanding MSPs are generated by the self-assembly of colloidal silica crystals or core-shell copolymer elastic colloidal crystals on microcavity PDMS molds to form photonic crystals (PCs). Nitrocellulose (NC) multistructured pseudo-papers (NC MSPs) were obtained by etching SiO2 PCs after NC precursor infiltration, while elastic copolymer (EC) multistructured pseudo-papers (EC MSPs) were directly peeled off the mold; both types of freestanding MSPs have ordered micropillars and nanocrystal structures and presented unique properties such as pumpless liquid transport and fluorescence and chemiluminescence (CL) enhancement. MSPs with designed patterns were fabricated by patterned PDMS molds, and complicated microfluidic chips were used to generate MSPs by utilizing these patterns as liquid channels. The MSPs were used for fabricating microfluidic sensors for human cardiac marker and cancer marker sensing; the features of these bioinspired MSPs indicate their potential for sensitive sensing, which will enable them to find broader applications in many fields.

Invisible high-security anticounterfeiting inks were developed by surface-modification of functionalized latex nanoparticles with spiropyran derivatives, which display both photochromism and fluorescence upon UV irradiation at the same time. The functionalized latex nanoparticles show different spherical, doughnut-like, and red blood cell-like morphologies depending on concentration and type of its functional groups. Microscopic investigation of the impregnated cellulosic papers with latex nanoparticles display that epoxy-functionalized spherical latex nanoparticles have considerable packing and stability on the surface of the cellulosic substrate by formation of hydrogen bonding. Epoxy-functionalized latex nanoparticles containing spiropyran were used for preparation of high-security photochromic/fluorescent anticounterfeiting inks for print-marking of different cellulosic security documents such as certificate, money, and passport with different marks. The printed marks and finger-prints on the cellulosic security documents display photochromism and red fluorescence emission upon UV irradiation with high intensity and brightness.

Deacidification is an established conservation treatment for the prolongation of the acidic paper stability. Several different deacidification systems are in use today, such as the dispersions of alkaline nanoparticles in organic solvents. The aim of the study was to compare the effects of different calcium nanoparticle dispersions in alcohols on lignocellulosic paper. Commercially available nano calcium hydroxide dispersions for paper deacidification, and laboratory prepared nano calcium carbonate dispersions in ethanol and 2-propanol were investigated and compared as to their effectiveness in increasing the stability of paper. The FE-SEM analyses were used to determine the size of Ca(OH)2 and CaCO3 particles in the dispersions. The SEM–EDS analyses were performed both on the paper surface and its cross-section in order to ascertain the distribution of calcium ions following the deacidification treatment. An evaluation of the changes of color, molecular weight, pH and alkaline reserve on different lignocellulosic papers was performed. In comparison to untreated samples, our results indicate all the investigated deacidification treatments decrease the degradation rate constant of cellulose, as determined by accelerated degradation. However, the treatments involving nano calcium hydroxides in both alcohols noticeably affect the color of the treated lignocellulosic papers. According to the obtained results, nano calcium carbonate is therefore the more suitable deacidification agent for the lignin containing papers.

The spherical cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) with high purity were prepared, the processes included composite enzymolysis of pulp fibers and the purification of product. The impurities in the crude product CNCs were analyzed with FTIR, coomassie brilliant blue-G250 and ionic chromatography. The pure CNCs were characterized with SEM, XRD, DLS and TGA. The results indicated that the crude CNCs was flocculated and washed twice with a dilute acid solution (pH = 2) to get pure spherical CNCs, the purity was approximate 99.99%. The obtained pure spherical CNCs had a narrow particle size distribution with diameter 15–40 nm. FTIR and XRD analyses proved that the crystal phase of the spherical CNCs did not change, but the crystallinity decreased slightly compared with pulp fibers. The thermal degradation showed that the spherical CNCs had better thermal stability than one from other methods, and the temperature of maximum weight loss rate (Tmax) was 329.2 °C.

A colorimetric test is described for the rapid detection of Staphylococcus aureus (SA). Gold nanorods (AuNRs) are first labeled with urease and yolk immunoglobulin (IgY). This probe can specifically bind SA. In the next step, nonspecific magnetic beads and sample are added. This leads to the formation of the AuNR-IgY-SA-nMB immunocomplex which is then magnetically separated. Finally, a solution of urea is added to the supernatant. Ureases catalyzes the decomposition of urea which results in an increase in the pH value. The increase in the pH value is detected by using a phenolphthalein test paper which undergoes a color change from white to pink. The analytical process can be completed within 20 min. The method is highly specific and can detect as little as 476 cfu·mL−1. It was verified by analyzing contaminated Chinese cabbage and beef samples, and 1000 cfu·mL−1 of SA were accurately detected.

Nanofluids, formed by adding nanoscale particles to insulating oil, are stable and homogeneous suspensions that present advanced performance of electrical insulation and heat dissipation. This study shows a comprehensive literature review based on the related results of nano-modified insulating oils (both mineral and vegetable insulating oils) to analyse the preparation methods, stability, dielectric spectroscopy, thermal conductivity, breakdown characteristics under AC and DC voltage, the thermal aging performance of nanofluids and oil-paper interaction. Then theoretical models have been introduced to explain the electrical mechanism of nanofluids. In addition, future research is proposed for nanofluids which would be low cost, highly stable and practically applicable to the power transformers.
