Little is known of Russian architects’ in-depth engagement with Ibero-Islamic architecture, especially the medieval Nasrid palaces of the Alhambra in Granada, in the so-called Moorish Revival. This study, rich in material, analyzes 19th-century Orientalizing buildings and interiors in St. Petersburg and traces the routes by which the formal vocabulary of the Alhambra reached Russia from Spain. Incorporating essential aspects of Russian cultural history and 19th-century European notions of the Orient, it shows that Russian architects and the Imperial Academy of Arts were among the pioneers of the Moorish Revival. Medievalists frequently approach Johannes Marignola's Chronicle of Bohemia (Cronica Boemorum) from two distinct angles, as a travelogue and as a historiographical work, and tend to separate these two aspects. This study focuses on an analysis of the functions of the travelogue elements in the chronicle as a whole. Marignola associates the historical narrative of the first and second ages of the world with reflections on his own journey to the East. However, the stylized narrator is in evidence throughout the chronicle, both as a historian and as a witness. With the aid of Old Testament and Gospel quotations, Marignola witnesses the reality of an earthly paradise in the East and the miracle at the court of Charles IV, connecting the narrative of Czech and of world history.

RUSSIAN literature , *ORIENTALISM , *POSTCOLONIALISM , *POSTCOLONIAL literature - Abstract
The paper deals with selected aspects of the studies of Orientalism, as it was introduced by E. W. Said in his monograph Orientalism, in the context of Russian colonial experience, with specific features of Russian "internal" and "outer" colonization, as well as with elements of Orientalism reflected in Russian literature. The applicability of E. Said' theory is demonstrated through an analysis of the poetic works of one of the founders of the Eurasian movement, P. N. Savickij. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract

When Edward Wadie Said (1935–2003), a Palestinian literary theorist, published – from today’s perspective – a classic postcolonial study work Orientalism: Western Conceptions of the Orient in 1987, he literary opened a Pandora’s box. Since then, countless number of various forms and displays of Orientalism were defined based on the academic discussions, yet the original meaning that Said attributed to the concept of orientalism was negative. According to Said, Orientalism essentially tends to create a stereotypical and homogenized perception of the East and is often full of irrational prejudices towards the cultures and civilizations of Orient, which are depicted as rudimentary, traditional, and obsolete in comparison to the Western culture. And an animated cartoon Tokio Jokio (1943), which was created during the World War II. for the purposes of American propaganda, shows exactly those features. In this picture, the director Norman McCabe (1911–2006) has managed to sarcastically portray Japan and its inhabitants using the mentioned features of Orientalism. Moreover, Orientalism in this film is closely accompanied by racist stereotypical ideas about the Japanese, which were constructed by the combination of American war machinery supported by the Anti-Japanese sentiment deeply rooted in the American society already since the end of the 19th century. Ninetail fox is a significant mythological creature varying across cultures of Eastern Asia, which is a fact widely reflected not just by local, but also by foreign cultural production. During last few years, there came into being two significant adaptations adding new contexts to story of a ninetailed fox, which achieved recognition across western globalized series market with respect to size of the audience. In 2019 Netflix TV station introduced Love, Death and Robots series, which is a compilation of animated short movies varying between genres of scifi, horror and fantasy. As a part of this series a project of Phillip Gelatto (screenplay) and Oliver Thomas (director) was introduced. Movie adaptation of Ken Liu’s novel is called Good Hunting and it addapts the myth of huli jing into new, cyberpunk environment. One year later an adaptation of kumiho, korean version of ninetailed fox, was introduced in series of HBO TV station Lovecraft Country, which was directed by Misha Green based a on novel of Matt Ruff. Both works were either praised or critised for more or less sensitive adaptation of the myth in terms of cultural significance and meaning. One of the hypothetical reasons for this reaction could be sexualization of the figure. That might be seen as a part of the trend of fetishization of asian women, which is one of consequences of western orientalising reprezentations of the region, as it was widely described for example by Kendall Matsumoto16. The aim of this essay is therefore a comparison of both pieces which should led to the possible revelation of how authentic both adaptations achieve to be and what possible representations of east-asian region they might reproduce. ORIENTALISM , *DECORATION & ornament - Abstract
This essay attempts to analyse the Czech movie Samotáři (The Loners) from the point of view of orientalism. The analysis focuses on the references to the Asian themes, mainly on the references to Japan, which are most numerous and have comparatively greater impact on the audience. Based on the analysis of the references thought through in relation to the context of their appearance, it will be argued that the orientalism is present in the movie mainly in the choice of themes which are stereotypical. However, it will be also argued that it is not orientalist in the Said’s sense of controlling “the other” by its stereotypical depiction for political purposes. Also, it will be argued that there is not a clear boundary between “ornamental” and “conceptual” orientalism as the movie do not utilize other concepts than that of “being Japanese”. MUSLIM women , *SOCIAL control , *SOCIAL norms , *HUMAN body , *SELF , *ORIENTALISM - Abstract
According to Michel Foucault or Brian S. Turner, the possibilities and ways of depicting the human body, its conception, as well as its discipline or control reflect the social norms. By understanding the body as an object and construct of social mechanisms, it is possible to understand specific parts of society, its structure, institutions and (meta) narratives with which it works. Understanding is based on dialogue, which should be based on clarifying starting points. In other words, objective research and interpretation of data requires (self) reflection and admission of one's own starting points, which can cause distortions, subjective interpretation of the obtained data. It is necessary to listen to the voices of those we "study". The emotional approach and the need to interpret phenomena in the context of how those we study understand them are also important. In her text, L. Abu-Lughod asks whether Muslim women really need the "West" to save them. And she points to the paradoxes of the "liberation" of Muslim women, which often do not reflect the needs of women themselves, but rather the narratives and the needs of Western scientists, activists, activists, etc. In my text, I focus on the work of Iranian artist Shirin Neshat, who, among other things, focused on depiction Muslim women. Neshat is not allowed to exhibit in Iran, and her testimony is often questioned by Western authors, or she is accused of orientalism and the promotion of stereotypes. Shirin Neshat does not consider herself an activist and in the interviews, she presents a broader, more-dimensional picture of the position of the Muslim woman in the society. At the same time, in her work she tries to capture the difficult position of a person divided between two cultures, both of which change over time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Orientalism, which was typical for Western authors and artists’ work in the 19th century, and which imitates elements of Eastern – Oriental cultures, is still abundant in the modern world, especially in films, music, computer games etc. According to Edward Said, this is a robust discourse that creates knowledge about the Orient. As a social science concept, it seeks to explain the unequal relationship between the (West) Occident and the (East) Orient. The American movie Memoirs of a Geisha (2005), based on the book of the same name (1997) written by the American writer Arthur Golden. He studied art history at Harvard University with a focus on Japan, therefore the story is set to an exotic and mysterious world of Japan before, during, and after WWII. It contains many Orientalism elements, with which this paper deals. It compares the film adaptation with reality and finds out the influence of WWII on the main heroines’ life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PERFORMANCE artists , *MUSIC industry , *ORIENTALISM , *WARRIORS , *MUSIC videos ,CHINESE music - Abstract
Elements of Orientalism can be found in many spheres of human activity, whether in literature, fine arts, music or fashion. Thanks to the increasing globalisation of our world, a distant and unattainable East – Orient is beginning to get closer. These cultures, customs, and rhythms penetrate more and more into our lives every day, mainly through media: Internet, television and radio. In recent years, Orientalism elements have also begun to appear in fashion and music industries and advertising, where they are primarily intended to impress us visually. In Western communities, however, they are mostly based only on stereotypes about Oriental countries, and in the performance of Western artists, they often have little to do with reality. In the music video with the Chinese warrior Chun Li, portrayed by rapper Nicki Minaj (1982), I decided to analyse Chinese Orientalism and compare the Western concept with her original image. AMERICAN filmmakers , *MARTIAL arts , *SAMURAI , *JAPANESE art , *REALITY television programs ,JAPANESE history - Abstract
In the introduction part of this paper, one will find definitions of terms Orient and Orientalism. Two conflicting views exist in Orientalism’s description – Edward Wadie Said (1935–2003) and George Paul Landow’s (1940) perspectives. An American movie intorduced to the public in 2013 47 Ronin is supposed to be an excellent example of Orientalism. It presents one of the most famous stories in Japanese history. In this film, we will find several orientalising elements, which are marked and subsequently analysed. One type of features offers a glimpse into the lives of samurai. An integral part of the movie are the Japanese martial arts and the fate of the ronin. It also points to the religious background of Japan. Despite all American filmmakers’ efforts to bring Japanese culture and historical events closer to the Westerners, there are moments in the movie that do not correspond to reality. The content and design are adapted to the eyes of the Occidental audience. This article therefore discusses the inspiration of Japanese culture and customs that used to be commonplace in the past. In the following essay, I will analyse Orientalism in Walt Disney’s 1998 animated film Mulan. First of all, I will explain basic concepts such as Orientalism, Orient and Occident, then I will introduce the life and work of Walt Disney and The Ballad of Mulan, an inspiration for the movie. Later, I am going to explain Orientalism in different scenes of the film, including stereotypical views of the obedient Asian girl and her appearance, inaccurate depictions of clothing, and the presence of typically Japanese elements, which are balanced by portraying typically Chinese since it should take place in China. Another aspect of Orientalism is the values that the characters advocate. Finally, features typical for Chinese culture appear in the film, but they do not correspond to the time of the story neither Six Dynasties nor Tang. These shape, I believe, the stereotypical views of the Westerners on Asian culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the chateau in Svätý Anton, a village near Banská Štiavnica, there is a luxurious Chinese salon established in the last quarter of the 19th century. The dominant element in it are undoubtedly the textile hangings on the walls decorated with embroidery: the boys arranged in small groups in Chinese garden architecture. The theme of playing children is very popular in China, especially in folk art, and also on ceramics or carved furniture, because it symbolises abundant offspring and family success. In the context of European chinoiseries and relevant historical interiors, the Chinese salon at the chateau is late and must therefore be seen as a retrospective of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. In the 19th century, deeper understanding of Chinese culture did away with to exotic exaggerations, and was represented in better taste than before. However, it can be assumed that the owners of the chateau did not understand the meaning of the installation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The essay demonstrates, that the founding document of the field of Post-Colonial Studies, due to serious logical flaws, fails to formulate a stringent thesis, open to critical scrutiny. Instead, Said's rhetorical strategy primarily serves to immunize Islam against criticism, whereby he employs the same means of which he accuses Orientalism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Although Edward Said's impact on the field of Middle Eastern Studies, and beyond, across the social sciences and the humanities, has been viewed from many perspectives as a brilliant triumph or as tragedy, few question the astonishing scope and penetration of Orientalism on the academic world. Here I wish to investigate the (unintended) role played by Said, and the post-colonial school of thought his works fostered, in the way that the West has so far handled the cognitive war that triumphalist Muslims wage in their stated goal of imposing Dar al-Islam on democratic polities. This diploma thesis analyzes 19th and 20th Czech language travel literature from (former) African colonies. The thesis is rooted in postcolonial theory - namely Osterhammel's synthesis of colonialism as a structure and an ideology, as well as Said's theory of orientalism. A key theoretical aspect of this work is Sarah Lemmen's updated notion of noncolonial orientalism, which arose out of her empirical work on Czech/Czechoslovak travel writing. Lemmen's concept addresses the specific standing of the Czech traveler vis-à-vis the colony, as they were not a representative of any world power, yet still exhibited orientalist views on colonies and the colonized. This work also pays special attention to the influence of socialist ideology on travel literature published between the years 1948 and 1989. The research questions which this work aims to answer are as follows: a) how is colonialism represented in Czech travel literature?, b) how is decolonization represented?, c) how do these travelogues portray Africans and their relationship to Europeans? These questions aim at understanding the authors' relationship with colonialism and orientalism as both ideology and practice which they encountered in Africa. The thesis consists of an analysis of nineteen of potential fifty-eight travelogues written by...

This master thesis deals with the understudied Villa Kučukalić, also known as the Kočić House, which was built in the orientalising style in Brčko, Bosnia-Herzegovina during theAustro-Hungarian occupation (1878-1918). The occupation of the country had far-reachingsocial, economic, and political consequences which were also expressed in the living habits of the newly gained Bosnian population. A concomitant of the modernisation of the country under Austria-Hungary was the usage of the orientalising architectural style which borrowed elements from the Islamic architecture of North Africa and Andalusia, and which had political and exoticizing connotations in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The modernisation of the country, as well as the profound changes in society and the application of this style find their manifestation in the Villa Kučukalić. The following thesis attempts to shed light on the overall historical context and the specific history that contributed to the creation of the villa, and to gauge its significance regarding building history. Within the framework of this thesis, it was possible to identify the previously unknown builder of the villa and a proposal for a new use of the, as of September 2022, abandoned house could be developed.

In this paper, we examine what we see as a Czech feeling of inferiority towards the western nations. Though the so-called post-communist syndrome seems to be a popular way to explain the negative self-perception of Czechs, we will argue that this phenomenon stems from the trauma, which Czechs experienced when transitioning from communism to the globalized capitalistic market. We believe that this trauma was brought about by the rhetoric of ''coming back to Europe'' as it is based on a heritage of orientalism in Europe, in combination with the general mentality of the oppressed, as thematized by the post-colonial theorists such as Franz Fanon or Paulo Freire. To verify our hypothesis, we conducted a survey with 189 respondents from all the regions of the Czech Republic.

The goal of this research is to shed light on the impact of European foreign direct investment and growing Chinese foreign direct investment in Sub-Saharan Africa through lenses of neocolonialism and orientalism. A case study analysis is utilized to grasp the topic appropriately. Two case studies were set - Senegal and Zambia case study. While Senegal serves predominantly as a case study for the impact of EU foreign direct investments, The case study of Zambia helps to understand how Chinese FDI inflow affects Sub-Saharan countries. Therefore, six hypotheses were outlined. This work researches the impact of FDI on the level of democracy represented by the democratic index of The Economist Intelligence Unit, business freedom embodied in The Heritage Foundation's economic freedom index, and stability of state symbolised by the fragile state index studied by The Fund for Peace. All three indexes above are available for free online. The correlation between EU FDI and level of democracy was confirmed while Chinese FDI negatively affects democratic development in studied countries. Next, European FDI positively affects the level of economic freedom in Senegal as well as Zambia. Nevertheless, increased Chinese FDI inflow to the countries deteriorated their economic freedom. Lastly, there is no clear...

The aim of this MA thesis is to describe and evaluate the manner in which Richard Flanagan captured Japanese culture in his 2013 novel, The Narrow Road to the Deep North. Since the main motif of the work is the life of an Australian prisoner of war, a topic that has been significant in the creation of Australian national identity, the novel is firstly analysed from its position in the wider context of Australian literature. Richard Flanagan provided the readers with a complex work, which presents the given motif not only from the perspective of the Australian prisoners-of-war, but also from the perspective of their predominantly Japanese captors. The inclusion of the points of view of the Japanese ranks the novel among the contemporary adaptations that provide a more comprehensive view on the events of World War II. For that reason, the novel is assessed as to the complexity and accuracy of the selected and incorporated areas of Japanese culture, whether there is a tendency for schematization in the depiction, and therefore a display of the so-called "Orientalism", as described by Edward Said. This MA thesis aims to analyse whether, and to what degree Flanagan's novel differs from other works of the Australian literature that deal with the events of World War II and Japan. The analysis focuses on...

The issue that this bachelor thesis approaches is the assumption that disconcerting situations in social work can happen while working with people with a migratory background. We will discuss whether gender differences influence social work in a migration context and if this then affects the cooperation and relationship between client and social worker. Our research question is: “What gender specific disconcertment do people who work in a migratory social work context experience and how does it affect the collaboration?” Supported by the theoretical base, the main part of this empirical thesis focuses on observa-tions, narratives and perceptions of the questioned social workers. By interpreting the two group interviews, which were organised and conducted by us, we came to our research re-sults, which include the following findings. Stories about cultural- and gender based disconcertment while shaking hands as a salutation- or farewell ritual, play an important role. So does the aspect of linguistic “gender gaps”, which marks one of our identified patriarchal relationship dynamics. The participants perceived the clients’ heteronormative and sometimes contradictory interaction with homosexuality as disconcerting. They are also irritated by the passing on of - in their opinion - disconcerting gender roles when it comes to raising children. Based on these finding we created a project draft that can realistically be put into action. The basic idea is to conduct a workshop that focuses on sensitisation and reflection.

34. Nietzsche's Orientalism.

ORIENTALISM ,PHILOSOPHERS ,CHRISTIANITY - Abstract
Edward Said may omit the German tradition from his ground-breaking study of Orientalism (1978), but it is clearly appropriate to describe Nietzsche as Orientalist in outlook. Without ever having left Western Europe, or even having read very widely on the subject, he indulges in a series of undiscriminating stereotypes about 'Asia' and 'the Orient', borrowing from a range of contemporary sources. His is an uncommon Orientalism, though, for his evaluation of supposedly 'Oriental' characteristics is generally positive, and they are used as a means to critique European decadence and degeneration. Because he defines the type 'Oriental' reactively in opposition to the 'European', though, it is contradictory. Furthermore, on Nietzsche's analysis 'Europe' itself is less a type or a geographical designation than an agonal process of repeated self-overcoming. He reverses the received evaluation of the Europe-Orient opposition only in turn to deconstruct the opposition itself. Europe first emerged out of Asia in Ancient Greece, Nietzsche claims, and it has remained a precarious achievement ever since, repeatedly liable to 're-orientalisation'. He argues that 'Oriental' Christianity has held Europe in its sway for too long, but his preferred antidote is a further instance of European 're-orientalisation', at the hands of the Jews, whose productive self-difference under a unified will he views as the best model for the 'good Europeans' of the future. TRAVEL writing , *LIMINALITY , *IMPERIALISM , *ORIENTALISM , *DISCOURSE - Abstract
Adventure and imagination are constant companions in creating landscapes and geographies in travel writing. Authors of travel texts cast the gaze from viewing platforms informed by Western discourse as they engage aesthetic dimensions of time and space to position the liminal in their narratives. In narratives of mobility the 'arrival' scene appears as a defining moment: one must cross a threshold and maintain a movement or passage involving temporal and spatial dimensions of liminality. In representing landscape, authors work with discourses of colonialism, post-colonialism, Orientalism and imperialism to formulate a discursive framework of what this paper positions as late twentieth century 'western cosmopolitical perspective'. Liminality is positioned as a tool to formulate metaphors, authorize discourse and characterize landscape through articulations of the gaze. This paper examines the writings of three women authors who wrote about their travels to the Islamic Republic of Iran in a particular historical moment - between the Islamic Revolution and US President Bush's 'Axis of Evil' declaration in 2002. Tracts of texts are drawn from the 'arrival' scenes to explore the various ways these writers frame their narratives according to the 'I' who focuses the 'eye' through a lens orientated by their cosmopolitical imagination or worldview. The gaze, articulated through discourse, provides a powerful view that may not reflect reality, but reflects what Western readerships may want to see as 'apparently' real. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we will refer to the historical vicissitudes of the Greek national character since the 19th century signposting two main versions: an antinomic but no less unified national character characterized by internal contrasts vis-à-vis the alleged uni-dimensional canon of western rationality, on the one hand, and a clash of national habitus into two opposite national identities – two modal characters – on the other. Further on, we shall discuss the role of national symbols such as the flag and parades as emotional constituents of nationalism as political religion conferring fragile legitimacy to the state as long as their meaning is under negotiation.

Citing several case studies, the article analyzes the processes whereby Ottoman-era homes on the outskirts (or fahs) of Algiers were transformed. It examines many aspects of these makeovers: the context (the property transfer of early colonization), the agents, and the type of renovation. In particular, it aims to demonstrate that alongside radical actions like demolition or abandonment, other appropriation phenomena emerged. Combining preservation and decorative invention, today these dwellings contribute to asserting the singularity of Algiers architecture.

Towards the end of the nineteenth century, ceramicists in Algiers began producing tile in a historicist style derived from neo-Moorish architecture and from the renovations of the grand Ottoman dwellings on the outskirts of Algiers. The style is strongly tied to Algiers collectors, architects, businessmen, and historians. Claiming to revive a tradition, they promoted a new craft industry, which flourished. This article presents a brief experiment in renovating or creating Algerian craftsmanship at the Mustapha museum of arts and antiquities, with a ceramics studio that operated 1899-1901, directed by curator Georges Marye and writer Émile Violard.

Using a qualitative content analysis, the thesis "Framing of Islam in the Czech News" examines the framing of Islam and Muslims in the Czech daily newspapers Mladá fronta DNES and Právo before and after the terrorist attacks in Paris (7-8 January 2015). Its theoretical framework views Islam both from the perspective of Czech society and the Czech media, the study of the latter aspect drawing on Czech as well as foreign theoretical works and research focused on Islam in the media. The thesis also considers the concept of media framing. The qualitative analysis aims to identify a set of frames specific to the media construction of Islam and Muslims. The extent to which framing is influenced by location (Islam and Muslims in the Czech Republic and abroad) and the Paris events (the development of framing over time - before and after the attacks) is also explored. Finally, the research looks at the role played in writings on the subject by stereotypes, orientalism, new racism (namely islamophobia) and van Dijk's ideological square.

Europe of the early 19th century is searching for its new artistic persona. Several new and distinct directions come into being, all vying for a spot on the landscape of arts and for the leading position. This desire to search for new directions deepens Europe's interest in the Orient. Meeting of the West with the East goes all the way back to early Middle Ages and manifests through several phases all the way to the present day. Fascination by the Orient in the 19th century was connected mainly to Napoleon's Egypt campaign, Greek uprising against the Turks, France's conquest of Northern Africa, World Exhibition in London and excursions into exotic lands themselves undertaken by contemporary enthusiasts. The wave of orientalism permeated all levels of fine art. It is most often seen in painting, graphic arts and photography and seen the least in sculpture. The thesis follows the orientalism phenomenon from the end of 18th century to the First World War. The goal is to provide some insight into its influence on areas of the fine arts in central Europe and provide background for future research in doing so. Key focus of the thesis is the research of exotic tendencies in architecture in the Kingdom of Bohemia and presenting it in the context of oriental architecture of other countries under the...

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to analyze the orientalist artwork of French painter Gustave Moreau in a context of orientalism and symbolism in the second half of the 19th century. The thesis focuses on comparing the representation of Orient in Moreau's art and its representation in painting in general, in particular in academic orientalism. Stylistic and thematic differences between traditional academic orientalism and the innovative approach of Gustave Moreau to the similar oriental subjects are examined. It also explores the position of Moreau's art in symbolist movement and his influence hereon. The core research method used in the thesis is studying the works of art mentioned in it and their analysis from iconographic, iconological and semiotic points of view. The author also examines primary textual sources (mainly artist's own thinking about art) and secondary literature concerning the life and art of Gustave Moreau, orientalism and its political context, and works on symbolism. The thesis consists of two parts. Part 1 deals with Moreau's orientalist art work within the frame of French orientalism of the second half of the 19th century, and it points out differences between Moreau's imaginary orientalism and the traditional academic orientalism. Chapter 1.1 describes the social and...

The subject of this BA thesis are plays set in the Orient, a new genre that started to gain popularity in the Restoration period. These plays, commonly inspired by the popular travelogues to the Orient and historical accounts, are characterised by their collection of stock characters, repeating topoi and orientalised images that represent the Orient more as a conception created by the West than an actual place. Nevertheless, in analysis of some of the plays I shall argue that these works also offer possible commentaries on the British society of the time and that they can be used as arguments criticizing or reinforcing the contemporary perception of women by dealing with such otherwise rather inaccessible themes as women stepping out of their social boundaries, femininity or female sexuality. In order to advocate my thesis I plan to use four different tragedies with Middle-Eastern settings, specifically Rhodes, Morocco, Turkey and Colchis (located mostly in present-day Georgia and Turkey). All these plays were written between 1663 and 1696 and might be considered some of the most representative examples of the genre. They include William Davenant's The Siege of Rhodes (1663), Elkanah Settle's The Empress of Morocco (1673), Mary Pix's Ibrahim, the Thirteenth Emperour of the Turks (1696) and...

Popisuje a analyzuje obsahovou a vizuální stránku příspěvků. This paper is a case study of the criticism of Islam and Muslims in the Czech lands, as shown on the example of the Facebook page Islám v České republice nechceme (“We do not want Islam in the Czech Republic”). Even though the number of Muslims in the Czech Republic is relatively small (probably not exceeding 11,000 individuals), the topic of Islam and Muslims is widely discussed in the public sphere of the Czech society. This paper aims at answering the following questions connected to Islam entering public sphere: what is the context of criticism of Islam in the Czech society? What theoretical tools of social sciences can be applied in analysing, explaining and understanding this criticism of Islam in the Czech environment? The paper provides a brief analysis of posts on the Facebook page Islám v České republice nechceme. It describes and analyses the content and visual aspects of the posts. The administrators of the page are identified as “opinion leaders”. The role of opinion leaders is based on their involvement in a social categorical relationship shared with their followers, connected to the process of defining Czech national identity. This identity is formulated in contrast with “Islam” and “Muslims”. Their characteristics and values are generally presented as contradictory to “Czech cultural values”. The criticism of Islam is interpreted as a case of “moral panics”, and, for its connection to the process of defining Czech national identity, it is also endowed with considerable political potential. The criticism of Islam in the process of defining Czech national identity is connected to the imagery of Muslims in the collective memory of the Czech society.

The thesis focuses on different conceptions of Russia developed throughout the philosophical- journalistic and prose works of an eminent Russian thinker of the 19th century - Alexander Herzen, who had lived and worked in Russia and later on continued his work as emigrant elsewhere in Europe. Applying E. Said's Orientalism, I. Buruma's and A. Margalit's Occidentalism, and A. Etkind's internal colonization, a representative sample of Hezen's work has been analyzed to embrace the changes of the author's perception of Russia. In particular, Etkind's concept is used to bridge the divergence between a conventional understanding of Orientalism directed upon Middle East and the canonical texts of the Russian 19th century (pre-revolutionary) intelligentsia. Herzen's work has been thus situated within the context of postcolonial studies. The analysis studies the images and scenes used by Herzen to build up his ideas and understandings of Russia and Europe, or more precisely his constructions of East and West, indirectly intertwined with the social characteristics of Russia and his various conceptions, including the imaginary role of Russian intelligentsia and the author's own role in Russia and Europe.

This thesis is concerned with literature connected with the abolition of slavery in British colonies. The thesis will treat the topic of the abolitionist movement from the perspective of social, cultural and literary history from the beginnings until the abolition of slavery in British colonies in the Caribbean in 1833 with the Slavery Abolition Act. The thesis will focus on the discourse of race and slavery. The chosen authors represent different opinions and perspectives as the discussion will focus on sentimental poetry, travel writings as well as slave narratives. The chief aim is to identify and define the strategies of abolitionist discourse and the rhetorical practices which it employed especially in shaping the image of Africans and how the hegemonic discourse of sentimentalism influenced their writing. The first part of the thesis is concerned with establishing a theoretical background and the establishing of the literary traditions and customs of the eighteenth century, definition of the sentimental discourse and philosophies of the Enlightenment. This will be framed by a definition of Edward Said's "Orientalism" as well as Paul Gilroy's theory of the "Black Atlantic," which will enable us to define the space between Britain, Africa and the Caribbean, where the history of slavery of...
