The influence of ruthenium addition at different doping concentrations on the optical properties and holographic behavior of Bi4Ge3O12 crystals is investigated. Doped Bi4Ge3O12 single crystals are grown by using the Czochralski technique. The distribution coefficient of each crystal is measured to determine the concentration of a doped ruthenium element. Holographic experiments are performed. Ruthenium is found to make Bi4Ge3O12 sensitive in the red spectral range. Thermal annealing and ultraviolet exposure have been used to modify the defect structure and corresponding absorption band of each crystal such that the holographic recording has been influenced. The diffraction efficiency increases with increasing of ruthenium content, especially after irradiation by ultraviolet light. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Elevated abundances of highly siderophile elements in Earth's mantle are thought to reflect the late accretion of primitive material after the cessation of core formation, but the origin of this material, and whether or not it can be linked to specific types of meteorites remain debated. Here, mass-dependent Ru isotopic data for chondrites and terrestrial peridotites are reported to evaluate the chemical nature and type of the late-accreted material. After correction for nucleosynthetic Ru isotope anomalies, enstatite, ordinary and carbonaceous chondrites all have indistinguishable mass-dependent Ru isotopic compositions. Thus, neither distinct formation conditions in the solar nebula nor parent body processes resulted in significant mass-dependent Ru isotope fractionation. All five terrestrial peridotites analyzed have mass-dependent Ru isotopic compositions that are indistinguishable from each other and from the composition of chondrites. The chondritic mass-dependent Ru isotopic composition of Earth's mantle is difficult to reconcile with prior suggestions that the late accretionary assemblage was a mixture of chondrites with a chemically evolved metal component. Although this mixture can reproduce the suprachondritic Ru/Ir inferred for Earth's mantle, it consistently predicts a heavy Ru isotopic composition of Earth's mantle with respect to chondrites. This is because metal components with elevated Ru/Ir are also enriched in heavy Ru isotopes, resulting from isotope fractionation during core crystallization. Thus, if late accretion involved impacts of differentiated protoplanetary bodies, then the projectile cores must have been either homogenized upon impact, or added to Earth's mantle completely, because otherwise Earth's mantle would have inherited a non-chondritic mass-dependent Ru isotopic composition from the unrepresentative sampling of core material. Ruthenium-103 is the parent isotope of 103mRh (t1/2 56.1 min), an isotope of interest for Auger electron therapy. During the proton irradiation of thorium targets, large amounts of 103Ru are generated through proton induced fission. The development of a two part chemical separation process to isolate 103Ru in high yield and purity from a proton irradiated thorium matrix on an analytical scale is described herein. The first part employed an anion exchange column to remove cationic actinide/lanthanide impurities along with the majority of the transition metal fission products. Secondly, an extraction chromatographic column utilizing diglycolamide functional groups was used to decontaminate 103Ru from the remaining impurities. This method resulted in a final radiochemical yield of 83 ± 5% of 103Ru with a purity of 99.9%. Dicationic ruthenium(II)-p-cymene complexes containing curcumin ligands (curcH = curcumin, bdcurcH = bisdemethoxycurcumin) and ionic N-methyl-1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane [PTA-Me]X (X = BF4 or I) have been synthesized and fully characterized for the first time. The solid-state structure of [Ru(p-cym)(curc)(PTA-Me)][SO3CF3][BF4] has also been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Modest antiproliferative activities of the complexes were observed against cisplatin-sensitive and cisplatin-resistant human ovarian carcinoma cells (A2780 and A2780cisR, respectively) and nontumorigenic human embryonic kidney (HEK293) cells. A series of coupling products have been prepared by a ruthenium(II)-catalyzed direct ortho-C–H arylation of 2-(aryl/heteroaryl)-substituted quinazolines with (hetero)aryl bromides. Tri(hetero)aryl-substituted alkenes were also prepared by olefinic C–H activation of 2-(2-arylvinyl)quinazoline derivatives. High conversions and selectivities were achieved by choosing the appropriate ruthenium(II) carboxylate catalyst system, solvent, and reaction temperature. The possibility of a C(sp3)–H functionalization by applying an arylation/reduction reaction sequence was also demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ruthenium is a fission product that can be released from the fuel in case of a severe nuclear accident. In this work the impact of the atmosphere composition, including air radiolysis products, on the transport of ruthenium through a primary circuit was examined. Experiments were performed at temperatures 1300, 1500 and 1700 K in a slightly humid air. In the experiments significant effect of nitrogen oxides (NO, NO) and nitric acid on the ruthenium chemistry in the model primary circuit was observed. The obtained results indicate a strong effect of air radiolysis products on the quantity partitioning of transported ruthenium to gaseous and aerosol compounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Herein, we explore the coordination of di- and triimine chelators at ruthenium(II) and ruthenium(III) centers. The reactions of 2,6-bis-((4-tetrahydropyranimino)methyl)pyridine (thppy),N1,N2-bis((3-chromone)methylene)benzene-1,2-diamine (chb), andtris-((1H-pyrrol-2-ylmethylene)ethane)amine (H3pym) withtrans-[RuIICl2(PPh3)3] afforded the diamagnetic ruthenium(II) complexcis-[RuCl2(thppy)(PPh3)] (1) and the paramagnetic complexes [mer-Ru2(μ-chb)Cl6(PPh3)2] (2), and [Ru(pym)] (3), respectively. The complexes were characterized by IR, NMR, and UV–vis spectroscopy and molar conductivity measurements. The structures were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The redox properties of the metal complexes were probed via cyclic- and squarewave voltammetry. Purpose The Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study (COMS) established iodine-125 (I-125) plaque brachytherapy for eye preserving treatment of medium-sized choroidal melanomas in the United States. Eye Physics I-125 plaque treatment modeled with Plaque Simulator (PS) software yields similar results to COMS. Herein, we report results from a series of 15 patients treated with ruthenium-106 (Ru-106) plaque brachytherapy using PS pretreatment modeling for plaque localization and dosimetry. Methods and Materials Fifteen patients with medium-sized choroidal melanomas (2.84–5.5 mm in apical height and a basal diameter of 7.8–12.6 mm) treated with ruthenium brachytherapy from 2003 to 2005 were evaluated retrospectively. Baseline and followup data were evaluated for tumor height, best corrected visual acuity, radiation retinopathy, radiation optic neuropathy, postradiation cataract formation, diplopia, and ptosis. Tumor response for both Ru-106 and I-125 plaques planned using the same PS pretreatment modeling was evaluated and compared. Results Isotope-specific radiation profiles were compared, and rates of local treatment failure (0%), optic neuropathy (6.7%), retinopathy (20%), and cataracts (33%) were evaluated. Five year–treated tumor heights were approximately 0.61 ± 0.29 (I-125, n = 16) and 0.53 ± 0.17 (Ru-106, n = 6) of their heights at diagnosis. Conclusions This patient subset had background characteristics very similar to those of the COMS and patients treated at our institution with I-125 plaques. Treatment response was equivalent although radiation complications occurred slightly less frequently in the Ru-106 group compared with those treated with I-125. Image-guided three-dimensional pretreatment modeling for plaque localization and dosimetry seems to work equally as well for Ru as for I-125 plaques and justifies more extensive investigation. Introduction: Ruthenium 360 (Ru360) has been shown to induce cardioprotective mechanisms in perfused hearts. The agent is a specific blocker of the main cardiac mitochondrial uptake mechanism, the mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU). UCP2, a mitochondrial membrane protein, which influences cardiac ROS formation was reported to interact with the MCU. Methods: To prove whether Ru360 affects ischemic cell injury on the singular cell level, cell viability (CV) in isolated cardiomyocytes from wild type mice (WT) was measured in a model of pelleting hypoxia (PH). To explore a possible influence of UCP2 on cellular survival, as well as on Ru360 function, cardiomyocytes from UCP2-/- mice were investigated. Results: During PH, Ru360 significantly improved CV in WT cardiomyocytes (Control 26.32% ± 1.58% vs. PH 13.60% ± 1.20% vs. PH+Ru360 19.98% ± 0.98%, n = 6; p < 0.05). No differences in the rate of apoptosis were observed in UCP2-/- vs. WT. In UCP2-/- cardiomyocytes, Ru360 reduced the rate of cell death. However, the effect was less pronounced compared to WT cardiomyocytes. Conclusion: Ru360 significantly reduces hypoxic cell injury by preventing single cell apoptosis in WT cardiomyoctes. A precise and selective method has been developed for extraction spectrophotometric determination of osmium(IV) and ruthenium(III) usingo-methoxyphenyl thiourea (OMePT) as a chromogenic ligand. The basis of the proposed methods are osmium(IV)-OMePT complex was formed in 0.8 mol L−1at room temperature while ruthenium(III)-OMePT complex was formed in 3.4 mol L−1aqueous hydrochloric acid media after 5.0 min heating in boiling water bath. The osmium(IV)-OMePT and ruthenium(III)-OMePT complex were measured at 518 and 640 nm against the reagent blank, respectively. Complexes were also extracted in 10 mL chloroform and showed comparable absorbance values. Beer’s law was obeyed up to 110.0μg mL−1for osmium(IV)-OMePT complex and up to 50.0μg mL−1for ruthenium(III)-OMePT complex. Molar absorptivity and Sandell’s sensitivity of osmium(IV)-OMePT and ruthenium(III)-OMePT complexes were 2.12 × 103L mol−1cm−1, 0.089μg cm−2and 2.34 × 103L mol−1cm−1, 0.043μg cm−2, respectively. The stoichiometry of osmium(IV)-OMePT and ruthenium(III)-OMePT complex was 1:1 and 1:2, respectively. Stability of osmium(IV)-OMePT complex was > 8 days and that of ruthenium(III)-OMePT complex was > 48 h. The proposed method was successfully applied for determination of osmium(IV) and ruthenium(III) from synthetic mixtures corresponding to platinum-osmium alloy and fissium alloy, respectively. The RuIV-based transition metal catalysts [Ru(η3:η3-C10H16)Cl2(PPh3)] ( 1), [Ru(η3:η3-C10H16)Cl2(PCy3)] ( 2), and [Ru(η3:η3-C10H16)(CF3COO)2(PPh3)] (3) have been synthesized and investigated for their use as initiators in the thermally and photo-initiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization (photo-ROMP) of norborn-2-ene (NBE). Compounds 1 and 3 display significant photo-ROMP activity with NBE whereas compound 2, although active in the ROMP of NBE, shows virtually no latency at all. Abstract: In this work we present new improved experimental limits for the partial half-lives of the double beta processes of 96Ru and 104Ru, obtained by means of a γ-ray spectrometry measurement. A disc of metallic Ru of natural isotopic abundance was sandwiched between two HPGe-detectors in the 225m deep underground laboratory HADES. After 108 days of measurement, the lower bounds for the partial half-lives were up to 6.9×1019 yr for 96Ru and 1.9×1020 yr for 104Ru. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We report on the results of studies of the 95Tc isotope production conditions in a poorly investigated 96Ru(γ,N)95Tc reaction at a relatively inexpensive electron accelerator. Based on the analytical model it is demonstrated the possibility for estimating the effective and peak cross-sections and the isotope yield for a given reaction in a thick production target without preliminary determination of its excitation function. For this purpose we compared specific activities of two small samples that were activated under the same conditions using the reference reaction 68Zn(γ,p)67Cu and the one under investigation. The experiment on simultaneous photo-activation of natural zinc and ruthenium targets was performed followed by the investigation of their isotope composition. The specific activity of the radionuclide was measured and cross-sections for the 96Ru(γ,N)95g,mTc reactions were determined. The yields of desired isomers and admixtures in the natural ruthenium targets of different size were estimated. It is shown, in particular, that the operating conditions of the NSC KIPT accelerator KUT-30 can provide 95gTc yields up to 120mCi/h. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Mobil Composition of Matter (MCM) is the name given for a series of mesoporous materials. The MCM-48 is one of three phases of the mesoporous materials, which is cubic crystalline structure. The MCM-48 in this work was synthesized from silatrane route, and Ru metal was loaded by incipient wetness impregnation. This work investigated the activity and selectivity of MCM-48 and Ru/MCM-48 used as the catalysts for waste tire pyrolysis. The results showed that Ru/MCM-48 improved the gas yield. In addition, the use of Ru/MCM-48 catalyst produced light olefins twice as much as the non-catalytic pyrolysis. On the other hand, the catalyst helped to improve the oil quality by increasing light oil portion. Furthermore, it also reduced poly- and polar-aromatic compounds and sulfur content in the derived oil. The absorption spectra at room temperature and the spectra, the quantum yields, and the decay times of the luminescence at 77 K of binuclear complexes [X(bpy)2Ru(BL)Ru(bpy)2Cl]2+ (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridyl; X = Cl, BL = pyrazine, 4,4′-bipyridyl, trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene, and trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane and X = NO2, BL = 4,4′-bipyridyl) in alcoholic (4 : 1 EtOH–MeOH) solutions are studied. It is shown that the interaction between the metal centers (MCs) of the complexes affects the characteristics of the electronically excited states (EESs) of each of them and facilitates increasing the transition dipole moment Ru(dπ)→BL(π*). The deactivation rate constants of the lowest electronically excited metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3MLCT) state of the complexes are determined. In an asymmetric binuclear complex, the energy transfer from MC(NO2) to MC(Cl) is revealed, with the rate constant of this transfer being not smaller than 3.2×1010s–1. © 2005 Pleiades Publishing, Inc. Mixed-chelate complexes of ruthenium have been synthesized using tridentate Schiff-base ligands (TDLs) derived by condensation of aldehydes (salicyldehyde, 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde) with 2-aminobenzoic acid, and bidentate ligands (2,2′-bipyridine or picolinic acid). [RuIII(cpsd)(bipy)(H2O)]+ (1), [RuIII(cpsd)(pic)(H2O)] (2), [RuIII(cppc)(bipy)(H2O)]2+ (3) and [RuIII(cppc)(pic)(H2O)]+ (4) complexes (where, cpsd2−=(N-(2-carboxyphenyl)salicylaldiminato); cppc−=N-2-carboxyphenylpyridine-2-carboxaldiminato; bipy=2,2′-bipyridine and pic−=picolinate) were characterized by analytical, spectral (IR and UV–Vis), conductance, magnetic moment and electrochemical studies. Catalysis of hydrocarbon oxidations for cyclohexene, cyclohexane, cyclohexanol, toluene, benzyl alcohol, and tetrahydrofuran have been studied using various O-atom transfer agents (t-BuOOH, H2O2, NaOCl, KHSO5 and pyridinium-N-oxide). The influence of product yield as a function of solvent was evaluated for CH2Cl2, CH3CN, and 1,4-dioxane. Coordinating solvents suppress the reactivity by inhibiting coordination of t-BuOOH, and compete for the RuV&z.dbnd6;O group through their own intrinsic C–H reactivity. The main pathway transfers the oxo group from the [RuO(TDL)(XY)] intermediate, TDL=cpsd2− and cppc2−; XY=bipy or pic−, with insertion of the oxo group into a C–H bond of all substrates tested (rather than olefin epoxidation for cyclohexene). A mechanism involving intermediacy of a high valent Ru(V)-oxo species is proposed for the catalytic oxidation processes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article reports the first experimental evidence that nuclear isotopic substitution of molecular sensitizers can indeed be used to control excited-state interfacial electron injection yields. The synthesis of the ruthenium ammine compounds is very similar to reported procedures for closely related compounds. The extent of the reaction was monitored by infrared spectroscopy, wherein the N-H stretching modes decreased with a concomitant increase of the N-D stretching intensity. It was found that the N-H stretching bands were essentially gone after four consecutive exchanges in MeOD.
