AbstractAim:To investigate whether estrogen receptor α (ER-α) PvuII and osteocalcin (also known as bone Gla protein, or BGP) HindIII genetic polymorphisms and their potential interactions are associated with body mass index (BMI) variation.Methods:Data on BMI and ER-α PvuII and BGP HindIII genotypes were obtained from 328 healthy premenopausal Chinese women in east China. The study subjects were unrelated, at least 21 years old (mean age of 33.2±5.9 years), and had an average BMI of 21.58±2.59. All subjects were genotyped at the ER-α PvuII and BGP HindIII loci using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP).Results:The BGP HindIII genotypes were significantly associated with BMI (P=0.003). Carriers of the HH and Hh genotypes had approximately 2.73% and 1.27% higher BMI than those of the hh genotype, respectively. In contrast, the ER-α PvuII polymorphism was not significantly associated with BMI (P=0.454). In addition, there was no evidence of potential interactions between the ER-α and BGP genes in our subjects (P≥0.013).Conclusion:The HindIII polymorphism of the BGP gene, but not the PvuII polymorphism of the ER-α gene or their potential interaction, was associated with BMI in premenopausal Chinese women. Background: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) has been increasing in China in recent years. The aim of this study is to estimate and compare the prevalence of MS among Chinese adults in Shanghai, one of the most economic developed areas in China, using definitions proposed by World Health Organization (WHO), National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel (modified ATP III) and International Diabetes Federation (IDF).Methods: This cross-sectional study included 5,584 adults at age 20-79 randomly selected from Pudong New Area of Shanghai, China, through a three-stage sampling. All participants were interviewed in-person between April and July of 2008 to collect information on demographic and lifestyle characteristics. At the interview, anthropometry and blood pressure were measured and bio-specimens were collected.Results: The prevalence estimates for the MS increased with age for each definition in men and women, but the estimates varied greatly between the definitions and by sex. The prevalence of the MS was higher in men (20.2%) than in women (18.7%) using WHO definition but this sex difference was reversed when using the modified ATP III (28.4% for men vs. 35.1% for women) and the IDF (15.9% for men vs. 26.7% for women) criteria. The most common metabolic disorder in this population was dyslipidaemia, regardless of the definition used. Substantial agreement, estimated using the kappa statistic, was found between the modified ATP III and IDF definition, whereas the lowest agreement was observed between the WHO and ATP III criteria.Conclusions: The MS is highly prevalent among Chinese adults in Pudong New Area of Shanghai and the most prevalent component was dyslipidemia. These findings underscore the importance of prevention and control efforts for the MS in this area and the need for a unified predictive definition for the syndrome for use by clinical practitioners and public health agencies. To cope with adverse environments, the majority of indigenous plants in arid regions possess adaptive plasticity after long-term evolution. Leaf-level morphology, anatomy, biochemical properties, diurnal water potential and gas exchange of Salix gordejevii distributed in fixed dunes and lowlands in Hunshandake Sandland, China, were compared. Compared to plants growing in lowlands, individuals of S. gordejevii in fixed dunes displayed much smaller leaf area (0.26 vs 0.70 cm2) and thicker leaves (leaf total thickness 148.59 vs 123.44 μm), together with heavier crust wax, denser hairs, and more compacted epidermal cells. Moreover, those growing in fixed dunes displayed stronger drought-resistance properties as evidenced by higher levels of proline (3.68 vs 0.20 mg g−1 DW) and soluble sugar (17.24 vs 14.49%). Furthermore, S. gordejevii in fixed dunes demonstrated lower water potential and lower light compensation point (28.8 vs 51.9 μmol m−2 s−1). Our findings suggest that morphological and/or anatomical plasticity in leaves has had great adaptive value for Salix in responding to deteriorating environments. The article presents the study conducted regarding the role of progesterone receptor (PGR) gene in endometrial cancer risk development in China. The study which collected DNA samples and information from Shanghai Endometrial Cancer Study aims to determine the association of PGR with the cancer risk in the Chinese population. The result shows that the gene is associated with the risk due to the polymorphism in the PGR region.

Background: Obesity is a major risk factor for endometrial cancer. Obesity, particularly central obesity, is considered as a systemic inflammatory condition and is related strongly to insulin resistance. C-reactive protein (CRP) is the most recognized biologic marker of chronic systematic inflammation, and it is conceivable that the CRP gene may work together with obesity in the development of endometrial cancer.Methods: On the basis of a population-based case-control study in a Chinese population, the authors obtained obesity measurements and data on 6 CRP single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 1046 patients with newly diagnosed endometrial cancer (cases) and from 1035 age frequency-matched controls. The association of the CRP SNPs with endometrial cancer risk and their modification on the association between obesity and endometrial cancer risk were evaluated.Results: Although CRP SNPs alone were not associated with endometrial cancer, the associations of endometrial cancer with central obesity, measured as the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and the waist circumference, seemed to be stronger in women who were homozygous for the major allele of reference SNP (rs)1130864 (cytidine [C]/C) than in women who had the C/thymidine (T) and T/T genotypes (interaction test: P = .013 for WHR; P = .083 for waist circumference). When the women were stratified further by menopausal status, the observed interactions persisted mainly in premenopausal women (interaction test: P < .001 for WHR; P = .002 for waist circumference).Conclusions: The current results suggested that, in the Chinese population that was studied, obesity-related insulin resistance and proinflammatory effects may play an important role in endometrial cancer risk, and these effects were modified significantly by the CRP SNP rs1130864. The article discusses a study which analyzed the age-adjusted prevalence of general and centralized obesity among Chinese men in Shanghai. Measurement of moderate and severe centralized obesity was performed using waist-to-hip ratio. It was discovered that the prevalence of overweight was 48.8% and obesity was 10.5% among Chinese men. Higher prevalence of obesity was found in men with high income or were retired, tea drinkers or nonusers of ginseng.

To explore the prevalence of hematuria or proteinuria in school children in Shanghai and to evaluate the screening methods, we conducted urine screening in more than 40,000 school children between 2003 and 2005. Children were tested with dipsticks read manually (method A) or dipsticks read by machines (method B) combined with a sulfosalicylic acid test or microscopy. Some children were tested once, and others who had abnormal results in the first screening were tested again 2 weeks later. The prevalence of urine abnormalities in the first screening was more than 5.00% and of the second screening about 1.00%. Either method B or testing two urine samples for each child had higher specificity. As to the direct cost, that of screening twice with method A was lower than just screening once with method B. So using method A to screen twice for each child was not only convenient and economical, but also could reduce the false positive rate effectively. More than 10 months of follow-up diagnosed two cases of IgA nephropathy. Asymptomatic chronic renal diseases in school children could be detected through school urine screening. Alpine meadow plays important roles in the animal production and conservation of water resources in the upper basin of Yellow River. In recent decades, desertification of this alpine meadow has resulted in changes in vegetation and soil features, as well as threatening the ecosystem functions and security. A field study was conducted to explain the response of vegetation pattern and soil features to desertification of alpine meadows. Results of vegetation studies indicated that hygrophytes were gradually replaced by mesophytes, xerophytes, and some annual psammophilous plants, and that cover and herbaceous biomass decreased along with the progressive desertification. Vegetation height increased in the slightly desertified stage, and then decreased in the very severe stage. Species diversity decreased, suggesting that desertification of alpine meadow contributed to species loss. This study also indicated that soil features gradually declined with increasing desertification of alpine meadow with soil texture becoming coarser and water content decreasing gradually. Soil bulk density (0-20 cm layer) increased with increasing desertification, but in the deeper soil (20-40 cm layer) decreased from original vegetation to the moderately desertified stage, and then increased after the severely desertified stage. The difference between the topsoil and the deeper soil in both soil bulk density and soil moisture was greatest at the moderately desertified stage. Soil organic matter dramatically reduced with progressive desertification. Soil nutrients (total N, P and K) decreased greatly due to desertification. Soil pH (0-20 cm and 20-40 cm) showed no significant differences among desertification stages. Overall, desertification of alpine meadow decreased plant diversity, reduced dominance of palatable species and changed soil physical and chemical properties. The impacts of ammonium-based N ( $$ {\text{NH}}^{ + }_{4} - {\text{N}} $$ ) addition on soil nitrification and acidification were investigated in terms of kinetic mechanisms and major factors controlling these soil processes for terrestrial ecosystems in subtropical China. Soil samples were collected from an upland soil derived from a sandstone parent (SU), a brush-land soil from a granite (GB), and a forest soil from a quaternary red earth (QF) in a typical subtropical region of China. The samples were incubated at 30°C with soil moisture content of 60% water holding capacity (WHC) for 35 days, after adding ammonium sulphate, urea, and ammonium bicarbonate at rates of 0, 100, and 250 mg N kg−1, respectively. Nitrification in SU soil (pH 6.27) followed a first-order reaction model ( P < 0.001). Addition of ammonium sulphate, urea and ammonium bicarbonate significantly ( P < 0.05) stimulated nitrification. As a result, the soil was significantly acidified ( P < 0.05) and the soil pH at the end of incubation decreased with increasing N addition. In contrast, nitrification in QF (pH 4.46) and GB (pH 4.82) soils followed a zero-order reaction model ( P < 0.001) and hence the addition of $$ {\text{NH}}^{ + }_{4} $$ did not directly affect soil nitrification. However, the chemical input directly changed initial pH of GB and QF soils, resulting in either a decrease or an increase in $$ {\text{NO}}^{ - }_{3} $$ production, dependent on the impact of the chemicals applied. At the end of incubation, the pH of QF and GB soils was significantly higher ( P < 0.05) in treatments with $$ {\text{NH}}^{ + }_{4} $$ -input than without $$ {\text{NH}}^{ + }_{4} $$ -input. These results indicated that for some acid soils nitrification was not controlled by available $$ {\text{NH}}^{ + }_{4} $$ -N and that $$ {\text{NH}}^{ + }_{4} $$ -N-input was not necessary to stimulate soil nitrification. And so no acceleration of soil acidification occurred. In order to characterize nitrification intensity in these humid soils and its effect on acidification, nitrification without N-amendment is a better indicator than with N-amendment. To evaluate whether estrogen receptor α(ER-α) and vitamin D receptor (VDR) genes are associated with the age at menarche in Chinese women. A total of 390 pre-menopausal Chinese women were genotyped at the ER-α PvuII, X baI, and VDR ApaI loci using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). Neither the ER-αgene nor the VDR gene individually had significant effects on the age at menarche in our subjects ( P > 0.10). However, evidence of interaction effects between the two genes were observed: with the aa genotype at the VDR ApaI locus, subjects with haplotype PX at the ER-αgene had, on average, 6 months later onset of menarche than the non-carriers ( P=0.01). We found that neither the ER-αgene or the VDR gene had a significant association with the age at menarche individually. Low peak bone density (PBD) in adulthood is an important determinant of osteoporotic fracture (OF) in the elderly. The tumor necrosis factor receptor 2 (TNFR2) gene has been considered as an important candidate gene for PBD due to its important role in bone turnover. In this study, we recruited a total of 1,263 subjects from 402 Chinese nuclear families composed of both parents and at least one daughter, and tested the association of the (CA)n polymorphism in intron 4 of the TNFR2 gene with PBD using a more contemporary quantitative transmission disequilibrium test (QTDT). Significant within-family association was detected between the CA16 allele and bone mineral density (BMD) at the lumbar spine with the P-value of 0.005 after permutations, which is still significant after correction for multiple testing. Some evidence of total-family association between the CA16 allele and lumbar spine BMD was found ( P=0.021), although the significant level did not reach the empirical threshold ( P≤0.007). About 3.14% of lumbar spine BMD variation can be explained by the CA16 allele. In summary, our results suggest that the TNFR2 gene may play an important role in determining lumbar spine BMD variation in Chinese women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Osteoporosis is a major public health problem for old people. Genetic factors are considered to be major contributors to the pathogenesis of postmenopausal osteoporosis. The vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene is a prominent candidate gene for the regulation of postmenopausal bone mass; however, despite extensive studies, controversy remains regarding its association with postmenopausal body mineral density (BMD) variation. In this study, a total of 260 healthy postmenopausal Chinese women were genotyped at the VDRApaI locus using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). Raw hip BMD was significantly associated with VDRApaI polymorphism with and without adjusting for age (P=0.015 and 0.040, respectively). This genetic effect can explain 3.32% of hip BMD variation. However, the significant association vanished after correcting for both age and body mass index (BMI) (P=0.169). In addition, we observed a significant association between VDRApaI polymorphism with unadjusted BMI (P=0.042) or BMI adjusted for age (P=0.049). The raw hip BMD was also found to be significantly correlated with BMI (r=0.517,P=0.0001), with BMI explaining 26.35% of the variation of hip BMD. All of these facts prompt us to conclude that the significant association between the VDRApaI genotype and hip BMD may be modified by BMI in postmenopausal Chinese women. Our findings may partially explain the earlier inconsistent association results concerning the VDR gene and BMD, and highlight the importance of incorporating covariates such as BMI into osteoporosis association studies. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the association of menstrual and reproductive factors with the risk of endometrial cancer. In a population-based case-control study conducted in urban Shanghai, in-person interviews were completed for 833 women aged 30–69 years and an equal number of controls frequency-matched to cases by age. All cases were newly diagnosed with endometrial cancer between January 1, 1997 and December 31, 2001. The unconditional logistic regression model was employed to derive the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) of endometrial cancer and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) in relation to menstrual and reproductive factors. Earlier menarche age, particularly among premenopausal women, and later menopausal age were associated with an elevated risk of endometrial cancer. A clear dose-response relation between endometrial cancer risk and years of menstruation was observed (p for trend < 0.01). Compared to women ever having a pregnancy and women ever having had a live birth, respectively, nulligravity and nulliparity were both associated with a more than one-fold elevated risk of endometrial cancer. Both completed (OR = 3.02, 95% CI 1.10–8.32 for women never having a complete pregnancy) and incomplete pregnancy (OR = 0.69, 95%CI 0.55–0.87) conferred a protective effect against endometrial cancer, and the protective effect appeared to increase with total number of pregnancies (p for trend = 0.01). The effect of pregnancy on endometrial cancer remained unchanged with increasing time since the last pregnancy. Stillbirth and age at first pregnancy was unrelated to endometrial cancer risk. Our study suggests that prolonged menstruation was related to an increased risk of endometrial cancer while pregnancy, including induced abortion, reduced the risk of endometrial cancer. © 2003 Wiley-Liss, Inc. Typhoon track model plays an important role in typhoon wind hazard estimation. In this article, a beta-advection model is developed to simulate the typhoon track over the western North Pacific (WNP). The typhoon motion is driven by two effects, the steering flow and beta drift. The steering flow is modeled as the linear combination of the 850 ​hPa height large scale flow and 250 ​hPa height large scale flow. The spatially varying weights are estimated from the 20th Century Reanalysis dataset for each 5 ​° ​× ​5 ​° square in WNP. The large scale flows at both heights are simulated as multivariate random process based on the fact that the energy spectrum of the geostrophic turbulence follows a "-3" power law. As another driving force of typhoon motion, the beta drift is calculated by solving the non-divergent barotropical vorticity equation. The adequacy of the present model is validated by the comparison between the typhoon translation velocity inferred from the best-track dataset and that simulated by the model. Finally, integrated with an intensity model, the beta-advection model is used to analyze the statistics of typhoon key parameters and typhoon wind hazard along the southeast coast of mainland China. • The typhoon motion is modeled by combining the large scale steering flow and the beta drift effect. • The kinetic analysis is used to remove the typhoon structure in the reanalysis data. • The beta advection typhoon track model is used to assess the typhoon hazard along the southeast coast of China. Tropical cyclone intensity model is one of the most important components in the tropical cyclone hazard assessment. In this study, the tropical cyclone fast intensity model, which uses features of the surrounding large-scale environment to predict the evolution of the tropical cyclone intensity, is used to estimate the typhoon wind hazard in the southeast coast of China. The fast tropical cyclone intensity model that consists of an intensity dynamic equation and a moisture dynamic equation is first validated for the western North Pacific basin. The coefficients in the moisture dynamic equation are calibrated by minimizing the error between the model and the observation from the best track dataset. The model is then integrated with a typhoon track model and a parametric radial wind profile to estimate the 50-year and 100-year recurrence-interval surface wind speeds at selected sites. Three different models for the radius of the maximum wind are considered in this analysis. Accordingly, surface wind records are utilized to estimate 50-year and 100-year recurrence-interval winds. The comparison shows a good agreement between the results of the model and that of the surface observations, which validates the adequacy of the model for engineering applications in the southeast coast of China. • The tropical cyclone fast intensity model is validated with the best track dataset. • The tropical cyclone fast intensity model is used for typhoon hazard analysis for southeast coast of China. • The influence of using different models for the radius of maximum wind on the estimated typhoon hazard is investigated. OBJECTIVE--Our objective was to determine the secular trend in prevalence of type 2 diabetes in Shanghai, China. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS--Two consecutive population-based surveys for type 2 diabetes were conducted in randomly selected adults aged 35-74 years in Shanghai in 2002-2003 (n = 12,329) and in 2009 (n = 7,423). Diagnosed type 2 diabetes was determined based on self-report, whereas those undiagnosed were identified by measured fasting and post-load glucose according to 2009 American Diabetes Association criteria. RESULTS--Age-standardized prevalence of diagnosed and undiagnosed type 2 diabetes increased from 5.1 and 4.6% in 2002-2003 to 7.4 and 5.2% in 2009. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes increased with age and was higher among men and in urban residents in both surveys (P < 0.001). Between the two surveys, the increase in the prevalence was more evident in the rural population (P < 0.001) and appeared more rapid in younger birth cohorts (P < 0.05). • Metamorphic time was determined by SIMS U–Th–Pb dating of metapelitic monazite. • The peak metamorphism occurred at ~1.95–1.83 Ga. • Subduction and collision of the TNCO occurred between 1.97 Ga and 1.80 Ga. As a key accessory mineral in metapelite, monazite forms in the metamorphic event and therefore, places important direct constraint on the timing of the tectono-metamorphic event. In this study, we investigate four representative metapelites from different metamorphic terranes in the central-south Trans-North China Orogen (TNCO), applying secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) U–Th–Pb dating on monazite. The dating results reveal that monazite collected from the Huashan, Luoning, Zanhuang and Wutai metamorphic complexes record the metamorphic ages of ~ 1.83 Ga, ~ 1.95 Ga, ~ 1.85 Ga and ~ 1.91 to 1.83 Ga, respectively. Combined with the literature data of metamorphic geochronology on the discrete terranes within the TNCO, it is suggested that the amalgamation between the Western and Eastern Blocks of the North China Craton along the nearly NS-trending TNCO stared as earlier as ~ 1.97 Ga and continued to as late as ~ 1.80 Ga, which was in fact a long-lived tectono-metamorphic event. Metamorphic evolution and geochronology of pelitic granulites were reported for the first time in the Taihua metamorphic complex, Mts. Huashan area, southern segment of the trans-North China Orogen (TNCO). Three generations of metamorphic mineral assemblages are recognized: (1) the prograde metamorphic mineral assemblages (M 1 ) are represented by mineral inclusions within the garnet porphyroblasts; (2) the metamorphic peak assemblage (M 2 ) are the garnet porphyroblasts and minerals in the matrix (biotite + orthopyroxene + plagioclase + quartz + K-feldspar + ilmenite + zircon + magnetite); and (3) the retrograde metamorphic mineral assemblages (M 3 ) are represented by the symplectic assemblages around the garnet porphyroblasts, resulted from decomposition reactions between garnet rims and neighboring minerals in the matrix. Calculated by both conventional thermobarometry and pseudosection modeling in the NCKFMASHT system using the Perple_X technique, the P–T conditions of these three metamorphic stages are constrained to be of 4–5 kbar/520–530 °C for the M 1 stage, 6.8–8.6 kbar/730–810 °C for the M 2 stage and 4.1–6.4 kbar/570–740 °C for the M 3 stage, respectively. The derived clockwise P–T paths imply that the Mts. Huashan terrane involved in the subduction and subsequent collision between the Eastern and Western Blocks of the North China Craton (NCC) along the Palaeoproterozoic Trans-North China Orogen (TNCO). High resolution SIMS U–Pb dating of metamorphic zircons reveals the metamorphic ages of 1.85–1.82 Ga. Combined with geochronological data from the literature, it is concluded that the tectonothermal evolution between the Eastern and Western Blocks started as early as ∼1.97 Ga and lasted as late as 1.80 Ga. Furthermore, the eastern Taihua complex records older metamorphic ages and higher peak metamorphic pressures than those of the western Taihua complex, possibly suggesting an eastward subduction model for the TNCO. The subduction of the paleo-Pacific plate beneath the North China block has been well documented in terms of magmatic activity, geophysical investigations, and numerical modeling, but the timing of its onset along the eastern Asian margin and the tectonic processes involved remain poorly understood. We have now reconstructed the structural evolution and sedimentation of the Shihuiyao-Gangzidian-Yuantai region of the southern Liaodong Peninsula, on the overriding plate at the eastern Asian margin, using geologic mapping, borehole data sets, field structural studies, and zircon geochronology. In the Shihuiyao area, based on geologic mapping and drilling, top-to-the-NW thrust faults truncated earlier top-to-the-NE reverse faults and then were subsequently overprinted by normal faults. In the Gangzidian area, geologic mapping and 40 boreholes allowed us to construct eight cross sections revealing the top-to-the-WNW/W thrust faults from the surface to a depth of at least 0.5 km; the sections show that the thrust faults extend to the basement and that subsequent normal faults dip subvertically. In the Yuantai thrust system, the top-to-the-NW thrusts, expressed as four tectonic windows and a duplex on the map scale, were intruded by late porphyry and diabase sills. Integration of the data from the three study areas allowed us to identify one angular unconformity and at least two phases of later deformation (D1 and D2). The pre-D1 unconformity is marked by a foreland basin that was filled with Middle Jurassic clastic rocks that unconformably overlie the Neoproterozoic and Cambrian basement. The D1 deformation is represented by NE-SW-striking thrust faults that displaced Neoproterozoic or Cambrian strata onto the Middle Jurassic strata. The D2 deformation is defined by kilometer-scale, high-angle normal faults with variable dips and strikes. Although three samples from the Middle Jurassic clastic rocks did not yield ideal maximum deposition ages (MDAs; ca. 246 Ma), a porphyry dike and a diabase sill that intruded the Yuantai thrust system and remain undeformed yielded zircon U-Pb ages of ca. 124 and 117 Ma, respectively. Detrital zircon geochronology yielded a MDA of ca. 129 Ma for Cretaceous deposits in graben structures with hanging walls formed by D2 normal faults. Thus, the D1 and D2 deformation events can be constrained to the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous, respectively (D1 between ca. 174 and 124 Ma, and D2 after ca. 129 Ma). The provenance of the detritus in the Middle Jurassic Wafangdian Formation suggests that the deposits in the retroarc foreland basin had a source in a thrust sheet of the Paleoproterozoic basement, but the source of deposits in a minigraben (D2) was possibly the nearby Neoproterozoic rocks. Therefore, we reconstructed the retroarc foreland basin and fold-and-thrust belt of the southern Liaodong Peninsula in terms of a subduction margin and constrained a Toarcian-Aptian (ca. 174-124 Ma) age for the onset of paleo-Pacific plate subduction. We interpret the foreland basin system and the subsequent synconvergent extension to have been the result of slab flattening and rollback during episodic subduction of the paleo-Pacific plate. • Garnet-bearing mafic granulites occur as lenses within TTG gneiss. • These mafic granulites contain three to four generations of mineral assemblages. • They record clockwise P-T paths with ITD and subsequent near IBC segments. • The metamorphic peak occurred at ∼1.85 Ga. Garnet-bearing mafic granulites occur as lenses within TTG gneiss or metapelite in the Fuping Complex, middle Palaeoproterozoic Trans-North China Orogen. They are composed mainly of garnet, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, hornblende, plagioclase, quartz and accessary zircon and titanite. Four stages of metamorphic mineral assemblages have been found in these mafic granulites: (a) the prograde assemblages (M1) are inclusions preserved in the garnet porphyroblasts, including clinopyroxene, hornblende, plagioclase and quartz; (b) the metamorphic peak assemblages (M2) consist of garnet porphyroblasts plus matrix minerals clinopyroxene + orthopyroxene + hornblende + plagioclase + quartz + zircon + titanite; (c) the first retrograde assemblages (M3) are represented by clinopyroxene + orthopyroxene + plagioclase + quartz symplectites rimming the garnets; and (4) the final retrograde assemblages (M4) are hornblende + plagioclase + quartz symplectites rimming or adjacent to the garnets. The retrieved metamorphic P-T paths pass from 530–600 °C/6.5–7.0 kbar (M1) through 680–820 °C/7.2–11.7 kbar (M2) to 730–760 °C/3.2–3.9 kbar (M3) and finally to 600–640 °C/3.2–3.7 kbar (M4). All the P-T paths of the mafic granulites are clockwise, two of these even contain near isothermal decompression (ITD) and subsequent near isobaric cooling (IBC) segments. SHRIMP U-Pb dating of metamorphic zircons of the mafic granulites yields a mean weighted age of ∼1849 ± 9Ma, which is consistent with the metamorphic time of surrounding TTG gneisses. Therefore, the Fuping Complex records the collision event between the Eastern and Western Blocks of the North China Craton that led to the final assembly of this craton during the late Paleoproterozoic. The invasion area of red imported fire ants (RIFAs) in China continues to expand due to factors such as ecological changes and human activities, and the resulting damage is becoming increasingly severe. The development of smart nanopesticides that respond to environmental stimuli response with precisely controlled release has great potential in improving insecticidal effects. In this work, a smart pH and α-amylase dual stimuli-responsive pesticide delivery system was constructed by combining mono-(6-amino-6-deoxy)-β-cyclodextrin (β-CD-NH 2) with zeolitic imidazole skeleton-90 (ZIF-90) nanoparticles (IDC@ZIF-90-CD) loaded with indoxacarb. The average particle size of the prepared IDC@ZIF-90-CD was 249 nm, and the loading efficiency was 18.43%. The β-CD-NH 2 coating on the surface of nanoparticles reduced the photodegradation of indoxacarb and prevented the premature release of the active ingredient. In vitro release kinetics showed that IDC@ZIF-90-CD rapidly released IDC under acidic and amylase conditions, consistent with the oral and intestinal environment of RIFAs. The results of bioactivity tests showed that IDC@ZIF-90-CD enhanced the toxicity of IDC toward RIFAs by increasing feeding and damaging intestinal cells. The mortality rate of the IDC@ZIF-90-CD-treated group was significantly higher than that of the IDC EC-treated group at 72 h. The nontargeted metabolomic results showed that IDC@ZIF-90-CD affected the metabolism of RIFAs by interfering with the metabolic pathways of six amino acids and one amino acid transport carrier, whereas IDC EC interfered with only two of these amino acid metabolic pathways. Objective We aimed to determine the burden of bacillary dysentery in China, its cross-regional variations, trends in morbidity and mortality, the causative bacterial species and antimicrobial resistance patterns. Methods We extracted and integrated governmental statistics and relevant medical literature published from 1991 to 2000. Data were also collected from one general hospital each for the six provinces and Jin-an district, Shanghai, representative of six geographical regions and a modern city. Findings In 2000, 0.8–1.7 million episodes of bacillary dysentery occurred of which 0.5 to 0.7 million were treated at health-care facilities and 0.15–0.20 million patients were hospitalized. The highest morbidity and mortality rates were among the youngest and oldest age groups. Bacillary dysentery peaked during the summer months. The major causative species was Shigella flexneri (86%) and the predominant S. flexneri serotype was 2a (80%). About 74–80% of Shigella isolates remained susceptible to fluorinated quinolones. Conclusion We conclude that while morbidity and mortality due to bacillary dysentery has decreased considerably in China in the past decade due to increasing access to affordable health care and antibiotics, a considerable burden exists among the youngest and oldest age groups and in regions with low economic development. We suggest that while a vaccine would be effective for short- and medium-term control of bacillary dysentery, improved water supply, sanitation, and hygiene are likely to be required for long-term control. Background & Aims: Data on long-term tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) therapy for pregnant women with active chronic hepatitis B (CHB) (immune clearance and reactivation phases, currently and previously diagnosed) and their infants are lacking., Methods: Pregnant women with active CHB treated with TAF and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) were enrolled in this multicenter prospective study, and infants received immunoprophylaxis. The primary outcomes were rates of adverse (safety) events in pregnant women and defects in infants and fetuses. The secondary outcomes were virologic responses in pregnant women, infants' safety, hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) status, and growth conditions., Results: One hundred three and 104 pregnant women were enrolled and 102 and 104 infants were born in the TAF and TDF groups, respectively. In the TAF group, the mean age, gestational age, alanine aminotransferase level, and viral loads at treatment initiation were 29.3 years, 1.3 weeks, 122.2 U/L, and 5.1 log 10 IU/mL, respectively. TAF was well-tolerated, and the most common adverse event was nausea (29.1%) during a mean of 2 years of treatment. Notably, 1 (1.0%) TAF-treated pregnant woman underwent induced abortion due to noncausal fetal cleft lip and palate. No infants in either group had birth defects. In the TAF group, the hepatitis B e antigen seroconversion rate was 20.7% at postpartum month 6, infants had normal growth parameters, and no infants were positive for HBsAg at 7 months. Background: Recent researches on Parkinson's disease (PD) pathogenesis discovered the correlation between PD and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1α (PGC-1α) dysfunction and reduction of PPARGC1A gene expression. Hence, we detected PPARGC1A rare variants to clarify their effect on PD risk in a large population of PD patients in mainland China., Methods: We applied whole-exome sequencing (WES) to 1917 patients with early-onset or familial PD and 1652 controls (WES cohort), and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to 1962 patients with sporadic late-onset PD and 1279 controls (WGS cohort). To identify PPARGC1A rare variants, we used burden analysis to assess the relationship between PPARGC1A rare variants and PD susceptibility., Results: 30 rare missense variants in the cohort WES and 21 missense variants in the cohort WGS have been detected in the study and PPARGC1A missense variants are significantly associated with early-onset and familial PD susceptibility in our study (P = 0.012), which supports evidence that PPARGC1A rare variants are involved in the onset of early-onset and familial PD., Conclusions: The study suggested that PPARGC1A rare variants may contribute to the risk of early-onset and familial PD., (© 2022. Objectives: This study aimed to reveal the association between single-nucleotide polymorphism of NTN1 and subtypes of non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) in Han Chinese Population., Design: Initially, we selected three single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) (rs4791331, rs4791774 and rs9891446) in NTN1 from previous genetic studies. Then we recruited two Han Chinese cohorts (2004 cases and 1823 controls) and divided cases into subgroups: non-syndromic right-side cleft lip, non-syndromic left-side cleft lip, non-syndromic bilateral cleft lip and non-syndromic cleft lip with palate to further evaluate the associations between the subtypes of NSCL/P and SNPs in NTN1. PLINK and Haploview program were utilized to analyze the data., Results: In the association analysis under additive model, we found that G allele at rs9891446 could specifically increase the risk of right-side cleft lip (P = 0.0073, OR = 1.44, 95%CI: 1.1-1.88), which was consistent with the results of association analysis under genotypic model., Conclusion: This study showed that rs9891446 of NTN1 was specifically associated with right-side cleft lip in Han Chinese, which indicates that different subtypes of non-syndromic cleft lip have distinct genetic background., (Copyright © 2022. Presenilin 1 (PSEN1) mutations are a major cause of familial Alzheimer's disease. The pathogenic variant, PSEN1 p.G417S, has been reported to be associated with spastic paraparesis and cotton wool plaques in Japan. Here, we report a 3 generation Chinese pedigree that included 10 patients presenting with early-onset and rapid progression of parkinsonism with cognitive impairment in their third or fourth decade of life. Three additional living patients developed different degrees of cognitive impairment, without movement disorders. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed white matter hyperintensities, multiple microbleeds, and enlarged perivascular spaces. Whole exome sequencing analysis of the proband detected the mutation, p.G417S, in PSEN1, which was completely co-segregated with the disease phenotype within the family by Sanger sequencing. 3D protein structures predicted that the mutation might influence contact with the lipid membrane and the interaction with beta-catenin. Objective: Children of parents with mental illness (COPMI) are vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study aimed to assess the psychosocial impacts of the pandemic and identify potential factors influencing their mental health., Method: 665 COPMI from six sites including Wuhan in China were enrolled. COPMI's mental health and the impacts of COVID-19 were assessed by an online survey. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to examine the association between impact factors and participants' mental health., Results: 16.1 % of participants were in abnormal range of mental health, with interpersonal relationship being the most common problem. 48.6 % of participants reported quite worried about the epidemic. All aspects of adverse effects of COVID-19 were more prevalent among COPMI in Wuhan than in other sites. Concerns about COVID-19 (OR = 1.7, p = 0.02), decreased family income (OR = 2.0, p = 0.02), being physically abused (OR = 2.1, p = 0.04), witnessing family members being physically abused (OR = 2.0, p = 0.03), and needs for promoting family members' mental health (OR = 2.2, p < 0.01) were independent risk factors for participants' mental health., Conclusion: The findings raise our awareness of the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic on the wellbeing of COPMI. The present study evaluated the curative efficacy of Chinese herbal injection on unstable angina pectoris( UAP) by network Meta-analysis. The databases,including Pub Med,Cochrane Library,Web of Science,CNKI,CBM,VIP and Wanfang were searched for randomized controlled trial( RCT) of Chinese herbal injection in the treatment of UAP. All researchers independently screened the articles,extracted the data and evaluated the quality. Open BUGS and Stata were employed for the analysis of the trials that met the quality standards. Fifty-eight studies were finally included in this study,involving 20 intervention measures. In terms of the effective rate,16 injections such as Dengzhan Xixin Injection,Xuesaitong Injection and Danshen Injection combined with western medicine exhibited significant efficacy. In terms of ECG,Puerarin Injection,Ginkgo Leaf Extract and Dipyridamole Injection( GDI),Breviscapine Injection combined with western medicine were superior to western medicine. In terms of the reduction of the angina attack times,Sodium Tanshinone ⅡASulfonate Injection,GDI and Dazhu Hongjingtian Injection combined with western medicine showed better effects than western medicine. In terms of shortening the angina duration,Shenmai Injection combined with western medicine was superior to western medicine. As revealed by the results,Dengzhan Xixin Injection,Xuesaitong Injection,Danshen Injection,Breviscapine Injection,Danshen Ligustrazine Injection combined with western medicine displayed prominent curative efficacy,which were recommended for clinical application. Meanwhile,appropriate intervention measures should be selected according to individual conditions. Limited by the quality of the included trials,the conclusions still need to be further verified.

A Gram-stain-negative, motile, rod-shaped, non-endospore-forming, aerobic and halophilic bacterium, designated strain YCWA18 T , was isolated from the sediment of Jimo-Daqiao saltern in China. This strain was able to grow at NaCl concentrations in the range 0.5-20 % (w/v) with optimum growth at 6 % (w/v) NaCl. Growth occurred at temperatures of 4-40 °C (optimum 28 °C) and pH 4.0-9.0 (optimum 7.0). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain YCWA18 T belonged to the genus Kushneria and shared the highest sequence similarity of 98.7 % with Kushneria sinocarnis DSM 23229 T . Moreover, the phylogenetic analysis based on the 23S rRNA gene sequence also confirmed the phylogenetic position of this novel strain. The predominant fatty acids were C 16 : 0 , C 17 : 0 cyclo and C 12 : 0 3-OH. The major isoprenoid quinone was Q-9 (94.2 %) and the polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol (DPG), phosphatidylglycerol (PG), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), an unidentified aminolipid (AL), an unidentified phospholipids (PL) and two unidentified lipids (L). The complete genome of strain YCWA18 T consisted of a single, circular chromosome of 3 624 619 bp, with an average G+C content of 59.1 mol%. A genome-based phylogenetic tree constructed using an up-to-date bacterial core gene set (UBCG) showed that strain YCWA18 T formed a clade with K. sinocarnis DSM 23229 T . However, the level of the ANI and dDDH values between strain YCWA18 T and K. sinocarnis DSM 23229 T were 82.3 and 24.6 %, respectively, which were low enough to distinguish strain YCWA18 T from K. sinocarnis DSM 23229 T . Overall, based on the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, phylogenetic and genomic analyses, strain YCWA18 T represents a novel species of genus Kushneria . The name Kushneria phosphatilytica sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain YCWA18 T (=CGMCC 1.9149 T =NCCB 100306 T ).

Background: A recent study on early onset Parkinson's disease (PD) revealed that NUS1 is a risk gene for PD. Clinically, essential tremor (ET) is closely related to PD. In this study, we aimed to detect NUS1 variants and assess the effect of those variants on patients with ET., Methods: The 5 coding regions and the exon-intron boundaries of NUS1 were directly sequenced in 395 patients with ET and an equal number of healthy controls, matched for age and sex. The function of variants was assessed by pathogenic predictive software programs. Genetic analysis of variants was used to evaluate susceptibility to ET., Results: A total of 6 exonic variants were identified, including 3 synonymous and 3 missense variants. The non-synonymous variants were predicted to be tolerable. The extreme climate events such as El Nino seriously threaten crop production and agro-ecological sustainability because of the aggravated environmental stresses worldwide, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. To address this issue, we investigated the effects of dual plastic film and straw mulching in ridge-furrow (RF) system on wheat productivity, soil carbon and nitrogen stocks in a semiarid area in Kenya from 2015 to 2017. The experimental site represents a typical semiarid continental monsoon climate, and soil type is chromic vertisols. Field experiment with randomized block design consisted of six RF treatments as follows: 1) dual black plastic film and straw mulching (RFbS), 2) dual transparent plastic film and straw mulching (RFtS), 3) sole black plastic film mulching (RFb), 4) sole transparent plastic mulching RF (RFt), 5) sole straw mulching (RFS) and 6) no mulching (CK). The results indicated that seasonal dynamics of rainfall and air temperature fit in with the weather type of El Nino over four growing seasons. RFbS, RFtS, RFb and RFt significantly increased soil water storage (SWS), topsoil temperature, aboveground biomass, grain yield and water use efficiency across four growing seasons (p < 0.05) as compared with CK. Among all the treatments, RFbS and RFtS achieved the greatest SWS, AgB, grain yield and WUE, owing to improved soil hydro-thermal status in both treatments. Critically, RFbS and RFtS significantly improved soil organic carbon and total nitrogen, soil bulk density and the C:N ratio following four growing seasons, comparing with other treatments (p < 0.05). Besides, RFbS and RFtS gave the highest economic returns among all treatments. The success of microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) relies on complex microbial processes. Nevertheless, the contribution and mechanism of in-situ denitrification to microbial oil recovery remain unclear. In this study, eight denitrifying bacterial strains, designated T1, D1, D44, D46, D15, S1, S2 and S6, were isolated from the produced water of Xinjiang Oilfield, China, by a double layered plate method. The16S rDNA gene sequences of these denitrifying strains shared 100% similarity with Pseudomonas stutzeri (T1, D1, and D44), Pseudomonas putida (D46 and D15), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (S1, S2, S6), respectively. The N 2 O production effects of these strains on the physical properties of crude oil were evaluated with batch experiment. Results showed that the highest total gas yield was observed with sucrose as carbon source, and the maximal concentration of N 2 O occurred with glycerol as carbon source. The denitrification process by these bacterial strains led to volume expansion and viscosity reduction of crude oil. Crude oil expansion rate was positively correlated with the concentration of N 2 O, with a correlation coefficient of 0.983, but not correlated with the volume of total gas production. Strain S1, S2, and S6 produced 530-730 mg·L -1 of surfactant using glycerol as ole carbon source, which could reduce surface tension and emulsify crude oil. However, these surfactant-producing strains produced less N 2 O, exhibited weaker effects on oil swelling and viscosity reduction, compared to the none-surfactant-producing denitrifying strains. Our results suggested that more attention should be paid to the ability of N 2 O production by denitrifying bacteria when exploiting microbial resources towards enhancing oil recovery.

A new species of flanged bombardier beetle form Hainan Island, China, Eustra yinggelingensis sp. nov. (Coleoptera, Carabidae, Paussinae, Ozaenini) is described. The new species was collected in rotten wood from Yinggeling Nature Reserve. Habitus and diagnostic features of the new species are illustrated. List, key and distribution map of all known Chinese Eustra species are given.

Diemailing~® Kudiezi Injection( DKI) is widely used in the treatment of cerebral infarction,coronary heart disease and angina pectoris. Long-term clinical application and related research evidence showed that DKI has a good effect in improving the clinical symptoms of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. However,this injection has not been included in any clinical practice guideline. It has been found that the use of DKI is in wrong way in clinical practice in recent years. Therefore,clinical experts from the field of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases nationwide are invited to compile this expert consensus in order to guide clinicians.GRADE system is used to grade the quality of evidence according to different outcomes according to degrading factors. Then it forms the recommendation or consensus suggestion through the nominal group method. The formation of expert consensus mainly considers six factors: quality of evidence,economy,efficacy,adverse reactions,patient acceptability and others. Based on these six aspects,if the evidence is sufficient,a " recommendation" supported by evidence is formed,and GRADE grid voting rule is adopted. If the evidence is insufficient,a " consensus suggestions" will be formed,using the majority voting rule. In this consensus,the clinical indications,efficacy,safety evidences and related preliminary data of DKI were systematically and comprehensively summarized in a concise and clear format,which could provide valuable reference for the clinical use of DKI. This consensus has been approved by China association of Chinese medicine which is numbered GS/CACM 202-2019.

Vacuum sealing drainage (VSD) is frequently used in abdominal surgeries. However, relevant guidelines are rare. Chinese Trauma Surgeon Association organized a committee composed of 28 experts across China in July 2017, aiming to provide an evidence-based recommendation for the application of VSD in abdominal surgeries. Eleven questions regarding the use of VSD in abdominal surgeries were addressed: (1) which type of materials should be respectively chosen for the intraperitoneal cavity, retroperitoneal cavity and superficial incisions? (2) Can VSD be preventively used for a high-risk abdominal incision with primary suture? (3) Can VSD be used in severely contaminated/infected abdominal surgical sites? (4) Can VSD be used for temporary abdominal cavity closure under some special conditions such as severe abdominal trauma, infection, liver transplantation and intra-abdominal volume increment in abdominal compartment syndrome? (5) Can VSD be used in abdominal organ inflammation, injury, or postoperative drainage? (6) Can VSD be used in the treatment of intestinal fistula and pancreatic fistula? (7) Can VSD be used in the treatment of intra-abdominal and extra-peritoneal abscess? (8) Can VSD be used in the treatment of abdominal wall wounds, wound cavity, and defects? (9) Does VSD increase the risk of bleeding? (10) Does VSD increase the risk of intestinal wall injury? (11) Does VSD increase the risk of peritoneal adhesion? Focusing on these questions, evidence-based recommendations were given accordingly. VSD was strongly recommended regarding the questions 2-4. Weak recommendations were made regarding questions 1 and 5-11. In China, the woolly apple aphid, Eriosoma lanigerum (Hausmann), was first detected as an invasive species during the 1910s to 1930s, restricted to Shandong, Liaoning, and Yunnan Provinces. However, since the 1990s, the pest has spread into many other areas of China. To determine the possible spread routes of the recently established populations, the genetic diversity and genetic structure of 24 populations in 10 provinces were analyzed using eight microsatellite loci. Analyses using STRUCTURE software identified two genetic clusters overall. Three populations from Yunnan and Xinjiang consisted of individuals originating from a single cluster. Nineteen populations from eight northern provinces consisted only of individuals from another cluster, which formed a single large and panmictic population, resembling a distinct "supercolony" in Northern China. The other two populations from Yunnan consisted of individuals from both clusters. The possible routes of spread of the recently established populations of E. lanigerum in China were revealed as follows: 1) the populations in Northern China (including these from Henan, Hebei, Shanxi, Shannxi, Jiangsu, and Gansu) may have been introduced from Shandong or Liaoning Provinces; 2) the populations in Yunnan consisted of an early-established population and a population introduced secondarily from Shandong or neighboring areas, indicating that the population in Yunnan has at least two sources; and 3) the recently established populations of E. lanigerum in Xinjiang might not have been introduced from the "supercolony" in Northern China. Though the greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) was introduced into China more than 60 years ago, the genetic diversity and structure of this exotic insect pest and virus vector have not been studied. To investigate the population genetic characteristics of this invasive species and to identify potential invasion routes, the genetic diversity and population structure of 17 collections of T. vaporariorum from nine provinces in China were analyzed using seven microsatellite loci. The results of the analyses indicated that the genetic diversity for the populations examined from the four provinces: Jilin, Ningxia, Guizhou and Qinghai, was lower than the genetic diversity of populations from the five provinces: Yunnan, Shandong, Shanxi, Liaoning, and Gansu. The T. vaporariorum populations analyzed in this study grouped as two distinct genetic clusters based on the analysis using STRUCTURE, whereas, 8 clusters were identified based on the BAPS analysis. Of the 136 genetic distance (Fst) values, 128 (94%) were associated with a significant exact test. However, there was no significant relationship between Fst and geographical distance. These results demonstrate that populations of T. vaporariorum in China exhibit significant genetic differentiation, indicating the likelihood that multiple introductions of T. vaporariorum into China have occurred. Also, the populations collected from the provinces of Jilin, Ningxia, Guizhou and Qinghai appear to represent secondary introductions originating from other Chinese provinces.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether risk of gastric cancer (GC) was associated with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in a gene cluster on the chromosome 17q12-q21 (ERBB2 amplicon) in the Chinese Han population. We detected twenty-six SNPs in this gene cluster containing steroidogenic acute regulatory-related lipid transfer domain containing 3 (STARD3), protein phosphatase 1 regulatory subunit 1B (PPP1R1B/DARPP32), titin-cap (TCAP), per1-like domain containing 1(PERLD1/CAB2), human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (ERBB2/HER2), zinc-finger protein subfamily 1A 3 (ZNFN1A3/IKZF3) and DNA topoisomerase 2-alpha (TOP2A) genes in 311 patients with GC and in 425 controls by Sequenom. We found no associations between genetic variations and GC risk. However, haplotype analysis implied that the haplotype CCCT of STARD3 (rs9972882, rs881844, rs11869286 and rs1877031) conferred a protective effect on the susceptibility to GC (P=0.043, odds ratio [OR]=0.805, 95% confidence intervals [95% CI]=0.643-0.992). The STARD3 rs1877031 TC genotype endued histogenesis of gastric mucinous adenocarcinoma and signet-ring cell carcinoma (P=0.021, OR=2.882, 95% CI=1.173-7.084). We examined the expression of STARD3 in 243 tumor tissues out of the 311 GC patients and 20 adjacent normal gastric tissues using immumohistochemical (IHC) analysis and tissue microarrays (TMA). The expression of STARD3 was observed in the gastric parietal cells and in gastric tumor tissues and significantly correlated with gender (P=0.004), alcohol drinking (P<0.001), tumor location (P=0.007), histological type (P=0.005) and differentiation (P=0.023) in GC. We concluded that the combined effect of haplotype CCCT of STARD3 might affect GC susceptibility. Chemical characteristics of normal, woolly apple aphid-damaged, and mechanically damaged twigs of six apple cultivars: Red Fuji, Golden Delicious, Qinguan, Zhaojin 108, Starkrimson, and Red General, were examined in autumn wood to provide abetter understanding of factors related to cultivar resistance to the woolly apple aphid, Eriosoma lanigerum (Hausmann). Chemical measures examined included soluble sugars, soluble proteins and amino acids, total phenolics, and polyphenol oxidase (that enhances the resistance of plants to insects) and superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase (that degrade waste products in plants). Soluble sugar, protein, and amino acid contents in normal (undamaged) twigs of Red Fuji, aphid-susceptible cultivar, were higher than in mechanically damaged and aphid-damaged twigs. Total phenolic compounds, an important group of defensive compounds against aphids, increased by 30.5 and 6.0% in mechanically damaged twigs of Qinguan and Zhaojin 108, respectively, and decreased by 21.7 and 16.1% in aphid-damaged twigs of Red Fuji and Red General, respectively. Compared with normal twigs, in aphid-damaged twigs, superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and polyphenol activity all decreased in Red Fuji. The resistance of some apple cultivars to woolly apple aphid during the growth of autumn shoots was related to several of the physiological indices we monitored. The thin epidermis of callus tissue over healed wounds showed increased susceptibility to the attack by woolly apple aphid. Apple cultivar Qinguan with the highest level of resistance to woolly apple aphid in autumn had increased in amino acid, total phenolic compound levels, and enzyme activity after aphid feeding.

Objective: to investigate the clinical features of 127 cases of the novel influenza A/H1N1 infection in Fujian Province., Methods: this study included 127 human cases with the novel influenza A/H1N1 infection in Fujian Province from May 2009 to July 2009. Data were collected and reviewed from hospital medical records. The statistical analyses were performed with SPSS 11.5., Results: the median age of the 127 patients (55 were females) was 21 years (range 0.4 - 58). The median incubation period was 2 d (range 1 - 12 d). The typical clinical symptoms included fever, cough, sputum, and sore throat. The duration of symptoms in patients less than 5 years old and in patients more than 5 years old were (8.2 +/- 4.1) and (5.4 +/- 3.0) d respectively, the difference between these 2 groups being significant (z = 3.182, P < 0.01). There was also a statistically significant difference in the duration of symptoms between the high-temperature group and the low-temperature group [(6.8 +/- 3.2) vs (4.8 +/- 2.1) d, Hc = 9.729, P < 0.05]. The duration of symptoms in the high, the normal and the low white blood cell groups were (6.3 +/- 4.7) d, (5.4 +/- 2.8) d, and (8.5 +/- 4.2) d respectively, but the differences were not statistically significant (Hc = 4.729, P = 0.094). However, the duration of symptoms in the higher lymphocyte count group was significantly longer than that in the lower and normal lymphocyte count groups [(6.8 +/- 3.3) vs (5.4 +/- 3.4), (5.2 +/- 3.2) d, Hc = 10.105, P < 0.01]. Chest radiography showed patchy infiltrates in 6 patients, and their duration of symptoms was longer than patients with normal chest radiography [(8.1 +/- 5.7) vs (5.6 +/- 3.1) d], but the difference was not statistically significant (z = 1.286, P > 0.05). 125 patients received antiviral treatment with oseltamivir and they all had a good prognosis. There was a statistical difference in the duration of symptoms between the patients who used oseltamivir within 48 h after disease onset and patients who used the drug beyond 48 h [(4.7 +/- 2.2) vs (7.4 +/- 4.1) days, z = 4.907, P < 0.01]. All of the patients survived., Conclusions: the clinical symptoms of this series of patients with the novel influenza A (H1N1) infection appeared to be mild. There were several factors associated with longer duration of symptoms, including aged 5 years or younger, higher fever (body temperature > 38 degrees C), higher white blood cell count and lymphocyte count. The early use of anti-retroviral treatment with oseltamivir was useful in shortening the duration. The novel influenza A (H1N1) infection was a self-limited disease, and patients with no complications had a good prognosis.

By the methods of system dynamics, a water environmental carrying capacity (WECC) model was constructed, and the dynamic trend of the WECC in Liaoning Province was simulated by using this model, in combining with analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and the vector norm method. It was predicted that under the conditions of maintaining present development schemes, the WECC in this province in 2000-2050 would be decreased year after year. Only increasing water resources supply while not implementing scientific and rational management of water environment could not improve the regional WECC, and the integration of searching for new and saving present water resources with controlling wastewater pollution and reducing sewage discharge would be the only effective way to improve the WECC and the coordinated development of economy, society, and environment in Liaoning.
