The West Liao River (WLR) and Yellow River (YR) basins are two major centers of millet farming in northern China. The result from flotation analyses and the spatial distribution of archeological sites indicate that two distinct survival strategies—agriculture and pastoralism were adopted in the southern and western regions of the WLR. Previous studies of ancient populations from the western area of the WLR suggested a correlation between a pastoral economy in the Bronze Age Upper Xiajiadian culture with a decreased genetic affinity with YR farmers. However, the population history of the southern WLR is unknown mainly due to the lack of ancient genetic data. Here we report the genomic data of an ancient individual from the Majiazishan site from the Late Bronze Age southern WLR region associated with Upper Xiajiadian culture. Unlike individuals from western WLR, this individual derived ancestry entirely from Late Neolithic YR farmers. We found a genetic substructure of the ancient human population of Upper Xiajiadian culture, which is consistent with the differences in the subsistence strategies of western and southern WLR. Climate deterioration led to different populations occupying the west and the south, respectively, in the WLR: the nomadic population from the Amur River (AR) in the west and the agricultural population from the YR in the south. Gastrochilus sinensis is a beautiful epiphytic orchid with high ornamental value. In this study, the first complete chloroplast genome sequence of G. sinensis was determined using next-generation sequencing (NGS). The de novo assembled chloroplast genome was 148,020 bp in length, including a pair of inverted repeat regions (IRs; 25,987 bp), a small single-copy region (SSC; 11,045 bp), and a large single-copy region (LSC; 85,001 bp). The chloroplast genome encodes 109 unique genes, including 75 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 30 tRNA genes, and four rRNA genes. The total GC content of the chloroplast genome was 36.8%. The phylogenetic analysis showed a close relationship between G. sinensis and G. formosanus species. The complete chloroplast genome provides fundamental information for genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships in Gastrochilus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The number of patients with lumbar disc herniation in China is increasing year by year. Percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD) is currently the main surgical method for treating lumbar disc herniation (LDH). However, with the increase in the number of surgical cases, the number of patients with recurrent lumbar disc herniation (RLDH) is also increasing. Currently, the common method in China is lumbar fusion surgery, but this surgery would cause the loss of fusion segment mobility and considerable postoperative complications. In order to solve the problem above the following technique will be studied: the technique of posterior lumbar laminectomy and nucleus pulposus removal under fully visualized spinal endoscopy (ENDO-LOVE) to treat RLDH. Its clinical effects will be observed in this paper, too.Methods: This series includes RLDH patients treated with ENDO-LOVE technology between January 2017 and January 2021. All patients will undergo at least three follow-up visits one year after surgery. The modified MacNab standard, VAS, JOA, and ODI scores will be used to evaluate clinical efficacy, observe for cerebrospinal fluid leak, nerve root injury, and surgical site infection, and evaluate clinical safety.Results: All 29 patients completed the surgery successfully. Three patients had postoperative pain and numbness in the area of nerve root innervation, and all patients had no serious complications. The VAS, JOA scores and ODI indices of back pain and leg pain 1-day, 3-months, and 1-year postoperatively differed statistically significantly from the preoperative scores (p < 0.05). Efficacy evaluated at 1-year postoperatively using the modified MacNab criteria showed an excellent rate of 89.7%.Conclusion: ENDO-LOVE technology has demonstrated good clinical efficacy and safety in the treatment of patients with RLDH. Accurate and reliable subseasonal precipitation forecasts are of great socioeconomic value for various aspects. The atmospheric intraseasonal oscillation (ISO), which is one of the leading sources of subseasonal predictability, can potentially be used as predictor for subseasonal precipitation forecasts. However, the relationship between atmospheric intraseasonal signals and subseasonal precipitation is of high uncertainty. In this study, we develop a spatiotemporal-projection-based Bayesian hierarchical model (STP-BHM) for subseasonal precipitation forecasts. The coupled covariance patterns between the preceding atmospheric intraseasonal signals and precipitation are extracted, and the corresponding projection coefficients are defined as predictors. A Bayesian hierarchical model (BHM) is then built to address the uncertainty in the relationship between atmospheric intraseasonal signals and precipitation. The STP-BHM model is applied to predict both the pentad mean precipitation amount and pentad mean precipitation anomalies for each hydroclimatic region over China during the boreal summer monsoon season. The model performance is evaluated through a leave-1-year-out cross-validation strategy. Our results suggest that the STP-BHM model can provide skillful and reliable probabilistic forecasts for both the pentad mean precipitation amount and pentad mean precipitation anomalies at leads of 20–25 d over most hydroclimatic regions in China. The results also indicate that the STP-BHM model outperforms the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) subseasonal to seasonal (S2S) model when the lead time is beyond 5 d for pentad mean precipitation amount forecasts. The intraseasonal signals of 850 and 200 hPa zonal wind (U850 and U200) and 850 and 500 hPa geopotential height (H850 and H500) contribute more to the overall forecast skill of the pentad mean precipitation amount predictions. In comparison, the outgoing longwave radiation anomalies (OLRAs) contribute most to the forecast skill of the pentad mean precipitation anomaly predictions. Other sources of subseasonal predictability, such as soil moisture, snow cover, and stratosphere–troposphere interaction, will be included in the future to further improve the subseasonal precipitation forecast skill. The leachate drainage volume (LDV) of municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills is crucial to the operation of leachate treatment plant and development at the leachate level, but there is still a lack of reasonable evaluation methods. In this study, the evaluation methods, including both field measurements and numerical simulations, are proposed and applied in the case study of a MSW landfill in Southeastern China. For field measurements, 23 boreholes were drilled to test the leachate level distribution, and thus to determine the saturated volume (SV) of the landfill. The water retention capacity of the drilled samples was tested in a compression cell for a calculation of the undrainage volume (UV) of the landfill, and total LDV was obtained as SV-UV. The total LDV and SV were measured to be 2.31 × 105 m3 and 1.08 × 106 m3, respectively, which indicated a total leachate drainage percentage (LDV/SV) of 22%. For numerical simulations, a hydro-mechanical model is established to predict the daily LDV during layered landfilling. The model couples leachate flow and MSW compression, which are two fundamental processes determining daily LDV. As the model takes into account the leachate generation caused by the compression of MSW, the prediction has a good agreement with the measurement. If ignoring compression, the daily LDV will be underestimated by a percentage of 35%–50%. The life cycle of the cabbage beetle Colaphellus bowringi in southeastern China is complex due to four options for adult development: summer diapause, winter diapause, prolonged diapsuse, and nondiapause. However, detailed information on the multi‐year emergence patterns of diapausing individuals in this beetle has not been documented. In this study, we monitored the adult emergence patterns of diapausing individuals and estimated the influence of the diapause‐inducing temperature and photoperiod on the incidence of prolonged diapause under seminatural conditions for several years. The duration of diapause for adults collected from the vegetable fields in different years varied from several months to 5 years. Approximately 25.9%–29.2% of individuals showed prolonged diapause (emergence more than 1 year after entering diapause) over the 5 years of observation. Furthermore, regardless of insect age, the emergence of diapausing adults from the soil always occurred between mid‐February and March in spring and between late August and mid‐October in autumn, when the host plants were available. The influence of diapause‐inducing temperatures (22, 25, and 28°C) combined with different photoperiods (L:D 12:12 h and L:D 14:10 h) on diapause duration was tested under seminatural conditions. Pairwise comparisons of diapause duration performed by the log‐rank test revealed that the low temperature of 22°C combined with the long photoperiod of L:D 14:10 h induced the longest diapause duration, whereas the low temperature of 22°C combined with the short photoperiod of L:D 12:12 h induced the highest proportion of prolonged diapause. Cyberchondria is considered "the anxiety-amplifying effects of online health-related searches." During the COVID-19 pandemic, people are likely to search health-related information online for reassurance because of fear and related physical symptoms, while cyberchondria may be triggered due to the escalation of health anxiety, different online seeking behavior preference, information overload, and insufficient e-health literacy. This study aimed to investigate the status and influencing factors of cyberchondria in residents in China during the epidemic period of COVID-19. The participants were 674 community residents of Nanyang city surveyed from February 1 to 15, 2020. We administered online measures, including the Chinese Short Form of the Cyberchondria Severity Scale (C-CSS-12), Short Health Anxiety Inventory (SHAI), eHealth Literacy Scale (eHEALS), Patient Health Questionnaire-15 (PHQ-15), and COVID-19-related online information seeking behavior questionnaire. In our study, the average C-CSS-12 total score of residents was 30.65 ± 11.53 during the virus epidemic; 25% of participants scored 22 or below, 50% scored 23 to 38, and 21.9% scored 39 to 60. The SHAI total score (β = 0.598 > 0, P < 0.001), the use of general search engines (β = 1.867 > 0, P = 0.039), and searching for information on how to diagnose COVID-19 (β = 2.280 > 0, P = 0.020) were independent risk factors for cyberchondria, while searching lasting less than 10 min each (β = −2.992 < 0, P = 0.048), the use of traditional media digital platforms (β = −1.650 < 0, P = 0.024) and professional medical communication platforms (β = −4.189 < 0, P = 0.007) were independent protective factors. Our findings showed that nearly a quarter of the participants scored 39 or higher on the C-CSS-12 in Nanyang city during the pandemic, which should be taken seriously. Health anxiety and COVID-19-related online information seeking behavior including online duration, topics and choice on different information channels were important influencing factors of cyberchondria. Hydrological models are widely used in regional drought assessments. Usually, the spatiotemporal development of droughts is evaluated only via drought indexes based on simulated soil moisture. However, the physiological status of crops is key to accurately assessing the effect of drought, and hydrological models either do not consider crop physiological status or oversimplify it. In addition, the effects of reservoirs, irrigation, and crop rotation are generally not considered. To overcome the oversimplification of crop and irrigation modules in hydrological models, the variable infiltration capacity (VIC) model was coupled with the Environmental Policy Integrated Climate model. Irrigation and reservoir modules were introduced into the coupled hydrology‐crop growth (CHC) model. The CHC model was built for the watershed upstream of Heilin hydrological station on the Qingkou River on the border of Jiangsu and Shandong Provinces, China. The model performance was compared with simulation results of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool and VIC, which showed that the CHC model was more accurate. The temporal variation of water consumption and demand of three crop rotations, namely spring peanuts, summer peanuts‐winter wheat, and summer corn‐winter wheat, in the study area was analyzed. Drought area data obtained from Junan County yearbooks were consistent with the simulated water deficit and drought index considering the effect of irrigation. Crop irrigation increased soil water content and evapotranspiration and decreased crop water deficit. Therefore, crop irrigation was considered in hydrological simulations. The CHC model reliably simulated crop water consumption, soil moisture, and drought index, and the model simulated data could be used as basic data for water resources management and drought mitigation measures. Plain Language Summary: Commonly used hydrological models oversimplify the simulation of crop growth. Some studies have coupled hydrological and crop models, but have several limitations, for example, the effects of reservoirs, irrigation, and crop rotation are not considered. Therefore, crop water consumption and drought events have not been accurately simulated. To overcome this limitation, this study coupled the variable infiltration capacity (VIC) and Environmental Policy Integrated Climate models with irrigation, reservoir, and gridded routing modules. The coupled hydrology and crop growth (CHC) model was developed, and the accuracy of the CHC simulation results was higher than that of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool and VIC simulation results. The temporal variation of crop water consumption and demand along the Qingkou River, China, were simulated. In summer, meteorological and soil water conditions cause the crop water demand to be minimum to correspond to maximum water consumption, which generated the maximum water deficit. The simulated water deficit and drought index considering irrigation effects were consistent with the drought area data obtained from Junan County yearbooks. Irrigation increased soil water content and crop evapotranspiration and decreased crop water deficit. In mid‐May, 2019, the fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda invaded Jiangxi Province, China, and caused extensive damage to corn crops. However, little attention has been given to the life‐history traits of the FAW. In the present study, we systematically investigated the life‐history traits of the newly invasive FAW on corn leaves at 19, 22, 25, 28, and 31°C under a photoperiod of LD 15:9 hr. The FAW thrived on the corn leaves with short developmental periods, high survival rates of larvae and pupae, very high mating success rates, and high fecundity. The pupal developmental stage was significantly longer in males than females at all temperatures, thus resulting in a protogyny phenomenon. The pupal weight was heaviest after a relatively shorter larval development stage at a higher temperature (25°C); thus, the FAW did not follow the temperature–size rule. Females were smaller than males, indicating sexual size dimorphism. A small proportion of females delayed their pre‐oviposition period and began to lay eggs on the 7th to 9th day after adult emergence. There were positive relationships between pupal weight and larval developmental time and between adult weight and fecundity. There was a negative relationship between fecundity and longevity. These findings can help us to predict the population dynamics of the FAW on corn and to develop a suitable and practical management strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil moisture (SM) is critical for various hydro-meteorological applications. Land surface models (LSMs) can produce global spatio-temporal continuous SM estimates. Recently, NASA and ECMWF released GLDAS-2.1 and ERA5-Land datasets, respectively, which contain newly produced LSM-based global SM products, and these have not been thoroughly evaluated in China. To better understand the two products, we decomposed them into SM climatology (i.e., mean seasonal cycle) and SM anomaly (i.e., short-term variability) components and evaluated them separately in China. In particular, the evaluation was conducted considering ground-based SM observations obtained from 1411 stations and two remotely sensed SM products. The following key results were obtained: (a) In the SM climatology evaluation, ERA5-Land showed a larger bias in (semi-) humid areas (0.06 m3/m3 on an average), while GLDAS-2.1 was generally unbiased. GLDAS-2.1 showed higher temporal precision (temporal mean R = 0.47 [-]) than ERA5-Land (temporal mean R = 0.17 [-]) in northern arid areas, while ERA5-Land exhibited better performance (temporal mean R = 0.64 [-]) than GLDAS-2.1 (temporal mean R = 0.34 [-]) in southern humid areas. (b) For the SM anomaly evaluation, ERA5-Land and GLDAS-2.1 performed similarly, and ERA5-Land (temporal mean R = 0.45 [-]) marginally outperformed GLDAS-2.1 (temporal mean R = 0.40 [-]). (c) For the raw SM, GLDAS-2.1 and ERA5-Land had higher temporal precision in the northern and southern areas, respectively, which are mostly determined by their SM climatology. Objective: To investigate the application of treatment modalities for patients with osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) in mainland China. Methods: This cross‐sectional study was based on the online application of China Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head Database (CONFHD). Between July 2016 to December 2018, the CONFHD program planned to recruit ONFH patients from 12 administrative areas across mainland China. Real‐world medical records of treatment regimens for these patients, including surgeries and prescriptions, were approved to upload to the CONFHD application for further analysis. The surgeries performed on these patients were classified into total hip arthroplasty and hip‐preserving procedures, and the latter was further classified into core decompression, bone grafting, and tantalum rod implantation. Prescription medications were classified into chemical medicine and Chinese herbal medicine (CHM); chemical medicine was further classified according to their chemical compounds, and CHM was classified according to therapeutic functions based on traditional Chinese medicine theory. Descriptive analysis was performed to summarize the application of different treatment regimens on the overall sample. Results: A total of 1491 patients (2381 hips) who fulfilled the protocol criteria were included. There were 1039 males and 452 females with a mean age of 47.29 ± 12.69 years. The causes of ONFH were alcoholism in 642 patients (43%), corticosteroid in 439 patients (29%), trauma in 239 patients (16%), and idiopathic ONFH in 171 patients (11%). Operative treatments (including total hip arthroplasty and hip‐preserving procedures) were performed on 49% of patients (43% of hips), chemical medicine therapy (including bisphosphonate, statins, and prostacyclin) was given to 37% of patients (37% of hips), and CHM was administrated to 72% of patients (75% of hips). The aforementioned interventions were not always used alone, since 47% of patients (52% of hips) received combined regimens with multiple interventions. Among hips treated by surgery, all hips with ARCO stage IV ONFH received THA (305 hips), and THA was also performed on 63 hips with stage II ONFH. Over half of hips with stage I (81%), II (91%), and III (92%) ONFH had received pharmacological treatments. Prostacyclin and bisphosphonate were the top two most prescribed medicines used alone. CHM therapies with multiple CHM functions were more commonly prescribed. Conclusion: Current treatment modalities for ONFH patients in mainland China include operative treatment, chemical medicine, and CHM. Prior to their application in a land surface data assimilation (DA) system, remotely sensed (RS) soil moisture (SM) products are typically rescaled to remove systematic differences with respect to comparable SM estimates obtained from a land surface model (LSM). This preprocessing of RS SM data—commonly referred to as bias correction—implicitly discards spatial information present in the RS SM retrievals. Here, based on dense SM network measurements obtained within the Huai River Basin of China, we demonstrate that L‐band Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) L3 surface SM retrievals provide a better representation of spatial variability in time‐averaged SM fields than a LSM—suggesting that, as typically applied, bias correction is neglecting important spatial information present in RS SM products. To maximally use RS information, we propose an alternative bias correction approach for SM DA that provides the benefits of traditional rescaling while also improving modeled SM spatial patterns. Specifically, the regional mean of SMAP SM is first corrected using modeled SM of the Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) model. Then, two key VIC soil parameters (EXPT and BULKD) are calibrated to match the relative subregional spatial variability captured by the SMAP SM product. Results show that our model calibration method successfully improves VIC SM spatial patterns and pixel‐wise time series. Furthermore, these SM improvements translate into enhanced VIC streamflow estimates. Overall, results suggest that the proposed bias correction framework can improve current land surface DA systems by maximally utilizing spatial information contained in RS SM products. In order to improve the soil moisture (SM) modelling capacity, a regional SM assimilation scheme based on an empirical approach considering spatial variability was constructed to assimilate in situ observed SM data into a hydrological model. The daily variable infiltration capacity (VIC) model was built to simulate SM in the Upper Huai River Basin, China, with a resolution of 5 km × 5 km. Through synthetic assimilation experiments and validations, the assimilated SM was evaluated, and the assimilation feedback on evapotranspiration (ET) and streamflow are analysed and discussed. The results show that the assimilation scheme improved the SM modelling capacity, both spatially and temporally. Moreover, the simulated ET was continually affected by changes in SM simulation, and the streamflow predictions were improved after applying the SM assimilation scheme. This study demonstrates the potential value of in situ observations in SM assimilation, and provides valuable ways for improving hydrological simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aplastic anemia (AA) is a hematologic disease characterized by pancytopenia and hypocellular bone marrow, potentially leading to chronic anemia, hemorrhage, and infection. The China Aplastic Anemia Committee and British Committee for Standards in Haematology guidelines recommend hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) or immunosuppressive therapy (IST) comprising antithymocyte globulin (ATG) with cyclosporine (CsA) as initial treatment for AA patients. With limited epidemiological data on the clinical management of AA in Asia, a prospective cohort registry study involving 22 AA treatment centers in China was conducted to describe the disease characteristics of newly diagnosed AA patients and investigate real-world treatment patterns and patient outcomes. Of 340 AA patients, 72.9, 12.6, and 3.5% were receiving IST, traditional Chinese medicine, and HSCT, respectively, at baseline; only 22.2% of IST-treated patients received guideline-recommended ATG with CsA initially. Almost all patients received supportive care (95.6%) as blood transfusion (97.8%), antibiotics (63.7%), and/or hematopoietic growth factors (58.2%). Overall, 64.8% achieved a partial or complete response, and 0.9% experienced relapse. No new safety concerns were identified; serious adverse events were largely unrelated to the treatment regimen. These results demonstrate the need to identify and minimize treatment barriers to standardize and align AA management in China with treatment guideline recommendations and further improve patient outcomes. Hainan Island is the second largest island and one of the most famous tourist destinations in China, but sediment contamination by trace metals in coastal areas is a major issue. However, full-scale risk assessments of trace metal-polluted coastal sediments are lacking. In this study, coastal surface sediments from 474 geographical locations covering almost the entire island were collected to identify risk-related variables. Controlling factors and possible sources of trace metals were identified, and the toxicity effects were carefully evaluated. Our results suggest that trace-metal pollution in coastal sediments, which was mainly caused by Pb, Zn and Cu emissions, has primarily resulted from industrial sewage and shipping activities and has threatened the offshore ecosystem of Hainan Island and warrants extensive consideration. This is the first study that has systematically investigated trace metal-polluted coastal sediments throughout the entirety of Hainan Island and provides solid evidence for sustainable marine management in the region. Aim: With consideration of the theoretical link between the stent insertion and the increased risk of tumor cells spillaged, which may lead to distant metastases, there is a concern about long-term clinical outcomes after the usage of self-expanding metallic stents (SEMS) as a "bridge to surgery" in the malignant colorectal obstruction (MCO) treatment. This cohort study aimed to compare the long-term oncological outcomes of SEMS as a bridge to surgery (SEMS group) with those of emergency surgery (ES group) for MCO.Methods: Twenty-seven patients who underwent semielective curative resection after endoscopic SEMS insertion were included from October 2007 to December 2012 in the SEMS group were compared with 33 patients who underwent emergency curative surgery for MCO during the same period in the ES group. The clinical pathologic characteristics and the overall survival (OS) rate were compared between the two groups.Results: There were no significant differences in demographics, tumor stage, location, and histology between the SEMS and ES groups. The median OS times were 37 months for the SEMS group and 23 months for the ES group. The proportions of patients who received postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy were comparable (SEMS group versus ES group, 70.4% versus 45.5%; P = .138). There were no significant differences in terms of the long-term oncological outcome between two groups in the 3-year OS rate (55.6% versus 39.4%; P = .2119) and the 5-year OS rate (48.1% versus 36.4%; P = .3570).Conclusions: Long-term oncological outcomes of the SEMS group were comparable to those of the ES group. Management of water resources may benefit from seasonal precipitation forecasts, but for obtaining high enough resolution, dynamical downscaling is necessary. This study investigated the downscaling capability of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model ARW, version 3.5, on seasonal precipitation forecasts for the Hanjiang basin in China during 2001-09, which was the water source of the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP). The WRF Model is forced by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction Operational Climate Forecast System, version 2 (CFSv2), and it performs at a high horizontal resolution of 10 km with four selected convection schemes. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center global daily precipitation data were employed to evaluate the WRF Model on multiple scales. On average, when large biases were removed, the WRF Model slightly outperformed the CFSv2 in all seasons, especially summer. In particular, the Kain-Fritsch convective scheme performed best in summer, whereas little difference was found in winter. The WRF Model showed similar results in monthly precipitation, but no time-dependent characteristics were observed for all months. The spatial anomaly correlation coefficient showed greater uncertainty than the bias and the temporal correlation coefficient. In addition, the performance of the WRF Model showed considerable regional variations. The upper basin always showed better agreement with observations than did the middle and lower parts of the basin. Climate change is likely to lead to an increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, including floods and droughts. Hydrological drought refers to deficiencies in surface and subsurface water supplies and is usually measured by streamflow, and lake, reservoir and ground water levels. Properly assessing hydrological drought is crucial to decision-making and management of regional water resources. In this study, changes in hydrological drought frequency over the Xijiang River Basin in South China are investigated through an analysis of daily streamflow data observed at major hydrological stations along the river during the period 1951-2013. The main results are as follows: (1) Standardized Runoff Drought Index is a suitable measure for regional hydrological drought research in the Xijiang Basin, as its correlation coefficient with actual disaster areas is above 0.6 for Wuzhou hydrological station; (2) the hydrological droughts in the Xijiang Basin typically have a short duration that are often less than 60 days; (3) there were three serious hydrological drought periods (the 1950s to mid-1960s, the late 1980s to mid-1990s and the mid-2000s to early 2010s) and two drought relief periods (the late 1960s to mid-1980s and the late 1990s to early 2000s) for the Xijiang Basin; (4) hydrological droughts in the Xijiang River occur frequently and are mainly concentrated in summer and spring, although serious hydrological droughts can easily arise in autumn. Droughts tend to be more frequent but less severe moving from upstream to downstream, and a long duration often accompanies high severity for a single drought event; and (5) severe hydrological droughts in upstream and midstream areas are characterized by long durations and high severities, respectively. Return periods based on copula could generally reflect actual drought situations, and severe and extreme hydrological droughts occur when return periods greater than 20 and 50 a, respectively. Abstract: Objective: To investigate the prevalence and risk factors of bronchial asthma in the Li ethnic group in Hainan, China. Methods: This study employed a stratified random sample design using custom-designed questionnaires. Subjects with asthma-like symptoms were first identified by two rounds of surveys and then confirmed by respiratory physicians using pulmonary function test, bronchial dilation test and challenge test. Demographic data, information on family history of asthma, history of allergies, smoking habits, domestic cooking fuel and other potential risk factors were collected. Logistic regression was performed to evaluate risk factors for asthma. Results: The prevalence of asthma in the Li ethnic group was 3.38%, much higher than the national average level in China. Aging, agriculture industry (the rubber industry in particular), rural residence, family history of asthma, history of allergies, cold air, inhalation of dust and irritant gases, smoking, domestic cooking fuel and living environment were associated with increased risk of asthma. Conclusions: The high prevalence of asthma in the Li ethnic group highlights the importance of asthma prevention and treatment in this population. Abstract: Along with the rapid increase of China''s energy demands, the energy engineering is facing more and more complex risks. The present research on the early warning methods of energy price risk mainly consider single prices and fail to analyze the energy price system integrally. In this paper, an early warning model of China''s energy price is analyzed from the aspects of price fluctuation and price ratio structure through fitting the risk distributions of indices and applying the CGE model (Computable General Equilibrium). And Based on analyzing China''s warning degrees of energy price ratios in the year 2015, it is found that the price ratios between electricity and crude oil are in the state of ‘dangerous’, while others are in the state of ‘highly dangerous’, including the price ratios between refined oil and crude oil, between the natural gas of resident and crude oil, between natural gas and coal and between electricity and coal. Polystichum cavernicola L. B. Zhang & H. He, a new pteridophyte species is described and illustrated from a karst cave in southern Guizhou, China. It is a member of Polystichum sect. Haplopolystichum (Dryopteridaceae). A phylogenetic analysis based on the chloroplast trnL-F sequences shows that the new species is most closely related with P. speluncicola, a species also described from a karst cave in southern Guizhou. Morphologically, P. cavernicola is most similar to P. speluncicola. The important morphological differences between P. cavernicola and P. speluncicola include that P. cavernicola has narrow-type microscales on the abaxial laminar surface, its pinnae are chartaceous and have auriculate acroscopic bases, and its lamina is broadest near the midpoint, whereas P. speluncicola has broad-type microscales on the abaxial laminar surface, its pinnae are subcoriaceous and have rounded, non-auriculate, acroscopic bases, and its lamina is broadest above the middle. The spores of P. cavernicola have verrucate sculpturing on the perispore, whereas those of P. speluncicola are cristate with numerous spinules on its perispore. MAN5, the main extracellular saccharide hydrolase from Bacillus sp. MSJ-5, is an endo-β-mannanase with a demand of at least five sugar moieties for effective cleavage. It has a pH optimum of 5.5 and a temperature optimum of 50°C and is stable at pH 5–9 or below 65°C. MAN5 has a very high ability to hydrolyze konjac flour, 10 U/mg of which could completely liquefy konjac flour gum in 10 min at 50°C. HPLC analysis showed that most glucomannan in the konjac flour was hydrolyzed into a large amount of oligosaccharides with DP of 2–6 and a very small amount of monosaccharide. With the culture supernatant as enzyme source, the optimum condition to prepare oligosaccharides from konjac flour was obtained as 10 mg/ml konjac flour incubated with 10 U/mg enzyme at 50°C for 24 h. With this condition, more than 90% polysaccharides in the konjac flour solution were hydrolyzed into oligosaccharides and a little monosaccharide (2.98% of the oligosaccharides). Konjac flour is an underutilized agricultural material with low commercial value in China. With MAN5, konjac flour can be utilized to generate high value-added oligosaccharides. Skillful sub-seasonal precipitation forecasts can provide valuable information for both flood and drought disaster mitigations. This study evaluates both deterministic and probabilistic sub-seasonal precipitation forecasts of ECMWF, ECCC, and UKMO models derived from the Sub-seasonal to Seasonal (S2S) Database at various spatiotemporal scales over China during the boreal summer monsoon. The Multi-Source Weighted-Ensemble Precipitation, version 2 (MSWEP V2), is used as the reference dataset to evaluate the forecast skills of the models. The results suggest that skillful deterministic sub-seasonal precipitation forecasts are found when the lead time is within 2 weeks. The deterministic forecast skills reduce quickly when the lead time is beyond 2 weeks. Positive ranked probability skill scores (RPSS) are only found when the lead time is within 2 weeks for probabilistic forecasts as well. Multimodel ensembling helps to improve forecast skills by removing large negative skill scores in northwestern China. The forecast skills are also improved at larger spatial scales or longer temporal scales. However, the improvement is only observed for certain regions where the predictable low frequency signals remain at longer lead times. The composite analysis suggests that both the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) have an impact on weekly precipitation variability over China. As the outbreaks of COVID-19 in worldwide, coronavirus has once again caught the attention of people. Canine coronavirus is widespread among dog population, and sometimes causes even fatal cases. Here, to characterize the prevalence and evolution of current circulating canine coronavirus (CCoV) strains in China, we collected 213 fecal samples from diarrheic pet dogs between 2018 and 2019. Of the 213 samples, we found 51 (23.94%) were positive for CCoV. Co-infection with canine parvovirus (CPV), canine astrovirus (CaAstV), canine kobuvirus (CaKV), Torque teno canis virus (TTCaV) were ubiquitous existed. Mixed infection of different CCoV subtypes exists extensively. Considering the limited sequences data in recent years, we sequenced 7 nearly complete genomes and 10 complete spike gene. Phylogenetic analysis of spike gene revealed a new subtype CCoV-II Variant and CCoV-IIa was the most prevalent subtype currently circulating. Moreover, we identified strain B906_ZJ_2019 shared 93.24% nucleotide identifies with previous strain A76, and both of them clustered with CCoV-II Variant, which were not well clustered with the known subtypes. Recombination analysis of B906_ZJ_2019 indicated that strain B906_ZJ_2019 may a recombinant variant between CCoV–I and CCoV-II, which is consistent with strain A76. Furthermore, amino acid variations widely existed among current CCoV-IIa strains circulating in China and the classic CCoV-IIa strains, in spite of the unknown functions. With the increasing utilization of satellite-based soil moisture products, a primary challenge is knowing their accuracy and robustness. This study presents a comprehensive assessment over China of three widely used global satellite soil moisture products, i.e., Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP), European Space Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) Soil Moisture, Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS). In situ soil moisture from 1682 stations and Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) model are used to evaluate the performance of SMAP_L3, ESA_CCI_SM_COMBINED, SMOS_CATDS_L3 from 31 March 2015 to 3 June 2018. The Triple Collocation (TC) approach is used to minimize the uncertainty (e.g., scale issue) during the validation process. The TC analysis is conducted using three triplets, i.e., [SMAP-Insitu-VIC], [CCI-Insitu-VIC], [SMOS-Insitu-VIC]. In general, SMAP is the most reliable product, reflecting the main spatiotemporal characteristics of soil moisture, while SMOS has the lowest accuracy. The results demonstrate that the overall root mean square error of SMAP, CCI, SMOS is 0.040, 0.028, 0.107 m3m−3, respectively. The overall temporal correlation coefficient of SMAP, CCI, SMOS is 0.68, 0.65, 0.38, respectively. The overall fractional root mean square error of SMAP, CCI, SMOS is 0.707, 0.750, 0.897, respectively. In irrigated areas, the accuracy of CCI is reduced due to the land surface model (which does not consider irrigation) used for the rescaling of the CCI_COMBINED soil moisture product during the merging process, while SMAP and SMOS preserve the irrigation signal. The quality of SMOS is most strongly impacted by land surface temperature, vegetation, and soil texture, while the quality of CCI is the least affected by these factors. With the increase of Radio Frequency Interference, the accuracy of SMOS decreases dramatically, followed by SMAP and CCI. Higher representativeness error of in situ stations is noted in regions with higher topographic complexity. This study helps to provide a guideline for the application of satellite soil moisture products in scientific research and gives some references (e.g., modify data algorithm according to the main error sources) for improving the data quality. In order to satisfy the strategic needs of energy sustainable development, renewable energy has developed rapidly and the power systems have been transformed to a new generation of power systems. In the renewable energy power generation technologies, the fastest developing wind power generation are highly intermittent and fluctuating. When high penetration of renewable power connects to the power grid and participates in the system dispatch, there will be more difficulties and challenges in the energy balance control. In this paper, a wind-thermal-nuclear-storage combined time division power dispatch strategy based on numerical characteristics of net load is proposed, where a specific thermal generating mode and an unconventional nuclear generating mode are discussed. In the strategy, the dispatch time division method is introduced in detail and the sample entropy theory is used to calculate the net load complexity. An adaptive thermal generating mode is determined according to the numerical characteristics of the net load. The nuclear generating modes of constant power operation, time division operation, and net load tracking time division operation are compared and analyzed, respectively. Finally, the wind-thermal-nuclear-storage combined time division power dispatch strategy aiming at decreasing the ramping power of thermal generators is achieved, and the increasing of the participation of pumped storage and improving of the continuous and steady operation time of thermal generators are realized. The experiment simulation is developed on an actual provincial power system in the northeast of China. The results verify that the thermal generator ramping power in the case based on SampEn are reduced, and the participation of pumped storage is improved. When both of the thermal generating mode and nuclear generating mode are according to the changing of net loads, the ramping powers of thermal generators are further decreased. As the global food supply chain becomes increasingly unstable, food security is gaining importance in China. Nevertheless, factors such as water scarcity, limited land resources, and global climate change pose great challenges to increasing food production. Therefore, it is crucial to explore sustainable development models for food systems. In this paper, a multi-objective crop layout model considering crop rotation is constructed and solved using the INSGA2-DS algorithm. Various precipitation scenarios were established for climate change. Data analysis and optimization were conducted under different precipitation scenarios. Applied in the plain area of southwestern Shandong Province, the model can increase soybean yield by 6.78%, net carbon sequestration intensity by 0.04%, net benefit by 2.09%, and crop water productivity by 3.91% during a median flow year. Optimization tends to increase the total area planted with food crops during wet years and decrease it during dry years. The optimization model can enhance water productivity and carbon sequestration intensity of crops, as well as prevent unreasonable fluctuations in the area planted with food crops. This enables the benefits of water conservation and yield increase to be fully utilized, and reduces yield and economic losses due to dry years. The models help to rationally allocate soil and water resources, effectively respond to climate change risks, and provide robust decision support for regional food crop planning. • Zircon Hf-O isotopes reveal decoupling of mantle-like δ18O values (5.1–7.4) and ancient crustal-like ε Hf (T) values (−4.0 to −8.9). • Zircon U-Pb age of Damiao anorthosite and regional age correlation suggest that the anorthosite was emplaced in an anorogenic extensional setting. • Compilation of Sr-Nd-O isotopic data of massif-type anorthosites indicate important lower crustal input in their magma sources. The formation of massif-type anorthosites and the associated mangerite, charnockite and (rapakivi-) granite (AMCG suite) are mostly restricted in the "Earth's Middle Age" (~1.70–0.75 Ga), and the magma sources of massif-type anorthosites are highly debated between the depleted mantle and the mafic lower crust. The ~1.7 Ga Damiao massif-type anorthosite in the North China Craton consists mainly of anorthosite and leuconorite with minor melanorite, mangerite, Fe-Ti-(P) ores and abundant ferrodioritic or gabbroic dykes. In-situ zircon Hf-O isotopic data from anorthosite reveal decoupling of mantle-like δ18O values (5.1–7.4) and ancient crustal-like ε Hf (T) values (−4.0 to −8.9). Since the significant 177Lu/176Hf reduction in the lower mafic crust, the mafic lower crustal materials derived from depleted mantle could display an ancient crustal medium to high negative ε Hf (T) values after long period of time (e.g., 0.5–1.0 Ga). In contrast, if no supracrustal materials were added, these mafic crustal materials would retain the mantle δ18O features. Thus, the decoupling of mantle-like δ18O and ancient crustal-like ε Hf (T) values suggest a lower crustal origin of the Damiao massif-type anorthosite. Compilation of Sr-Nd-O isotopic data of massif-type anorthosites reveal decoupling of ε Hf (T), initial 87Sr/86Sr and δ18O values, which signifies important lower crustal input in magmas sources of most massif-type anorthosites. We proposed that zircon U-Pb age of the Damiao massif-type anorthosite (~1.70 Ga) and regional age correlation suggest that the anorthosite was emplaced in an intraplate, anorogenic extensional setting after the Paleoproterozoic orogeny had ended. Long-term, reliable quantitative precipitation estimate products provide an ideal data source for large-scale drought monitoring and other related hydrological and meteorological applications. The foremost purpose of this study was to evaluate the suitability of Multi-Source Weighted-Ensemble Precipitation Version 2.1 (MSWEP V2.1) for drought monitoring over mainland China. The accuracy of MSWEP V2.1 was first evaluated against observed precipitation data derived from 586 meteorological stations. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) based on MSWEP V2.1 was then validated and analyzed at multiple spatial (regional and grid) and temporal (1, 3, 6, and 12 months) scales. Finally, we considered three typical drought events as case studies and analyzed the potential of MSWEP V2.1 in capturing the temporal and spatial variations of drought conditions. The results indicated that there was good agreement between MSWEP V2.1 and the rain gauge observations, even though MSWEP V2.1 generally underestimated the precipitation over most parts of mainland China. MSWEP V2.1 exhibited the highest correlation coefficient (CC) with in situ observations at monthly timescales, followed by those at yearly timescales and daily timescales with an average CC of 0.93, 0.86, and 0.77, respectively. The MSWEP V2.1-based SPI matched well with that calculated from the precipitation data derived from the meteorological stations at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Generally, the performance of MSWEP V2.1 over eastern China was significantly superior to its performance in western China. Despite this, MSWEP V2.1 still provided a greater potential for drought monitoring over western China than two satellite-based precipitation estimates, namely the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multi-Satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) 3B42V7 and the Climate Prediction Center morphing technique (CMORPH) satellite-gauge merged product (CMORPH BLD). Through the analysis of three typical drought events, we found that the MSWEP V2.1-based SPI could not only precisely describe the occurrence and development of drought events, but also reasonably reflect important characteristics of typical drought events, such as intensity and areal extent. In general, MSWEP V2.1 could be used as an alternative data source for drought monitoring over mainland China, particularly in eastern China. Accurate drought prediction is essential for drought resilience and water resources management. The skill of seasonal drought prediction from dynamical and statistical models has limitations. This study combines dynamical models and deep learning to construct hybrid (dynamical-statistical) models. We use the random forest to extract typical grids based on the geopotential height, sea-level pressure, and 2-m temperature. The long short-term memory (LSTM) is used to construct the statistical models, with atmospheric variables as predictors and the 3-month Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI3) as the predictand. The hindcasts of atmospheric variables from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) SEAS5 model are processed as predictors to force the statistical models. The hybrid model, constructed using the dynamical models and the LSTM, is named dynamic-LSTM ("D-LSTM"). The results suggest that the LSTM models are of information-extraction capability and robustness. When the lead time exceeds one month, the prediction skills are significantly improved by the D-LSTM models, especially in the East, Northwest, Southwest, and Tibet. In most regions, the D-LSTM models are more skillful across all seasons for lead times exceeding 30 days and are reliable in predicting droughts in spring and summer when the ECMWF SEAS5 loses skills at the seasonal scale. The relationships between forecasts and observations are built at daily, weekly, and fortnight temporal scales for each grid cell and each hydroclimatic region after normalization. The results suggest that the skills and reliability of ECMWF raw daily precipitation forecasts are improved after post-processing. The forecast skills are further improved at larger spatial scales or longer temporal scales, especially in the Upper and Middle Yangtze River, Southeast Rivers, and Pearl River. Although the forecast skills decrease rapidly as lead time increases, the uncertainty spread of the BJP calibrated sub-seasonal precipitation forecasts is highly reliable at all lead times and spatiotemporal scales. This work will help to realize the potential of CGCM forecasts at sub-seasonal time scales. Contaminants may induce immune response polarization, leading to immune diseases, such as allergic diseases. Evidence concerning the effects of chlorinated paraffins (CPs), an emerging persistent organic pollutant, on immune system is scarce, particularly for epidemiological evidence. This study explores the association between CPs exposure and allergic diseases (allergic rhinitis, atopic eczema, and allergic conjunctivitis) in children and adolescents in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in China. Herein, 131,304 children and adolescents from primary and secondary schools in the PRD were included and completed the questionnaire survey. The particulate matter (PM) samples were collected in the PRD and the PM 2.5 -bound CP concentrations were analyzed. In the multivarious adjustment mixed effect model (MEM), an IQR increase in ∑CPs was significantly associated with allergic diseases (rhinitis, eczema, and conjunctivitis) with the estimated odds ratios (OR s) for 1.11 (95% CI: 1.10, 1.13), 1.17 (95% CI: 1.15, 1.19), and 1.82 (95% CI: 1.76, 1.88), respectively. Interaction analysis indicated that overweight and obese individuals might have greater risk. Similar effect estimates were observed in several sensitivity analyses. This study provided epidemiological evidence on the immunotoxicity of CPs. More studies to confirm our findings and investigate mechanisms are needed. Energy sustainable development is of strategic importance across the world. This is especially the case in China as it is the world's largest energy consumer. However, renewable energies such as wind and solar energy are characterized with high intermittence and fluctuation. In this paper, an adaptive time division power dispatch strategy based on numerical characteristics of net loads is proposed. In this strategy, a dispatch time division method is introduced in detail to divide the dispatching time according to the numerical characteristics of net loads. The sample entropy theory is utilized to calculate the complexity of the net loads, depending on which a specific thermal generating mode is provided. The experiment simulation is developed on an actual provincial power system in the northeast of China. The test results have confirmed that in the adaptive time division power dispatch strategy, the ramping power of thermal generators are decreased, the continuous and steady operation time of thermal generators are improved. Available high quality precipitation datasets generally cover only recent periods. To extend these datasets back in time is challenging due to historically lower rain gauge network density or poorer remote sensing. In this study, a Bayesian joint probability method is presented to extend the temporal coverage of high quality precipitation datasets by calibrating reanalysis estimates. Relationships between precipitation estimates from a high quality dataset and precipitation estimates from a reanalysis dataset are established by using data from the overlapping period of the two datasets. The relationships are then used to calibrate reanalysis estimates for the period when only reanalysis data is available. Rain gauge observations are also used to enhance the calibration. The method brings the reanalysis dataset to the same spatial resolution as the high quality dataset, corrects bias, and makes the reanalysis data more consistent with the high quality dataset. The calibrated estimates generated are presented in the form of ensembles to represent uncertainty. The method is applied to the Han River basin in China, using the CMPA high quality dataset and the ERA-interim reanalysis dataset. • This study provides new insights into the P–T – t history of deeply-subducted continental crust with the utilization of zircon petrochronology. • Identification of omphacite, phengite and garnet inclusions in zircons indicate that the felsic crust probably has transformed during the eclogite-facies metamorphism. • P–T – t path of the orthogneisses demonstrates two-stages of exhumation for the UHP terrane. The early-stage faster exhumation is likely related to melt activity. Reconstruction of pressure–temperature–time (P – T – t) path of volumetrically-dominant orthogneisses in deeply subducted continental crusts is challenging due to their simple amphibolite-facies mineral assemblages. To provide new insights into this issue, a detailed study of mineral inclusions, trace elements and U-Pb ages within robust zircon containers, together with titanite U-Pb dating and petrology were conducted on ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) orthogneisses from the northern Sulu belt. The following P–T–t conditions of three metamorphic stages were constrained: (i) cathodoluminescence (CL)-grey zircon cores (ca. 238–237 Ma) with flat heavy rare earth element (HREE) patterns include garnet, phengite and omphacite that yield estimated P–T conditions of 2.3–2.8 GPa/730–800 °C, corresponding to prograde high-pressure (HP) metamorphism before the UHP peak. (ii) CL-dark zircon mantles (ca. 224 Ma) contain multiphase solid inclusions of plagioclase + K-feldspar + quartz and show extremely low Th/U ratios (≤0.08) and negative Eu anomalies, demonstrating their crystallization from hydrous melt at 2.0–1.8 GPa/890–820 °C during HP eclogite-facies exhumation. In addition, titanite grains are characterized by high LREE contents (1939–5239 ppm), Th/U ratios (0.37–0.81) and crystallization temperatures (830–801 °C), suggesting their peritectic origin. The lower intercept age (220 ± 4 Ma) of titanite is broadly consistent with the ages of the zircon mantles, indicating that they both crystallized from the melt at the same stage. (iii) CL-bright zircon rims (ca. 212–211 Ma) preserve low-pressure mineral inclusions of plagioclase, K-feldspar and quartz, and they show low Th/U ratios (0.03–0.12) and steep HREE patterns with negative Eu anomalies, witnessing amphibolite-facies overprinting at 1.0–0.8 GPa/610–550 °C. Combined with the metamorphic peak conditions of 3.2 GPa/840 °C at ca. 232 Ma constrained by previous studies from the same area, the P – T – t path of the northern Sulu UHP belt is reconstructed. The data reflects two-stage exhumation of this terrane, including an early-stage (5.8 km/m.y.) and a later-stage slower (3.1 km/m.y.) exhumation processes. The analysis of land-atmosphere water and energy interactions requires reliable representation of soil moisture (SM) and evapotranspiration (ET) coupling strength (ρ). However, ρ in current land surface models (LSMs) is prone to bias and its error sources remain unclear. This study aims to identify error sources controlling LSM ρ biases. To this end, we first use a well-established algorithm to produce debiased reference ρ map based on multi-source remote sensing data. Then, ρ values from three LSMs (Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC), Catchment Land Surface Model (CLSM), and Noah) in Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) are evaluated against our reference ρ map. Results show that all the three LSMs demonstrate strong ρ in the northern part of China (dominated by arid and semi-arid climates). In contrast, the biases of modeled ρ are marginal in the (relatively) humid southern part of China. Across the three LSMs, Noah and CLSM contain substantial positive biases in ρ representation, while VIC-based ρ estimates are significantly lower than the remotely sensed reference ρ values. Based on our analysis, it appears that the relative importance of transpiration and soil evaporation determines the overall magnitude of ρ and the inter-model ρ differences. However, the LSMs employ different schemes in land surface energy balance. Therefore, the exact process and/or parameter controlling the transpiration and soil evaporation partitioning may be model-specific. • The SM-ET coupling strengths of GLDAS LSMs are evaluated. • Large coupling differences exist between LSMs in arid and semi-arid climates. • Transpiration fraction dominates inter-model coupling differences. The Xijiang River is known as the Golden Watercourse because of its role in the development of the Pearl River Delta Regional Economic System in China, which was made possible by its abundant water resources. At present, the hydrological regime of the Xijiang River has now become complicated, the water shortages and successive droughts pose a threat to regional economic development. However, the complexity of hydroclimatological processes with emphasizes on drought has not been comprehended. In order to effectively predict and develop the adaptation strategies to cope with the water scarcity damage caused by hydrological droughts, it is essential to thoroughly analyze the relationship between hydrological droughts and pre/post-dependent hydroclimatological factors. To accomplish this, the extreme-point symmetric mode decomposition method (ESMD) was utilized to reveal the periodic variation in hydrological droughts that is characterized by the Standardized Drought Index (SDI). In addition, the cross-wavelet transform method was applied to investigate the correlation between large-scale climate indices and drought. The results showed that hydrological drought had the most significant response to spring ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation), and the response lags in sub-basins were mostly 8–9 months except that in Yujiang River were mainly 5 or 8 months. Signal reservoir operation in the Yujiang River reduced drought severity by 52–95.8% from January to April over the 2003–2014 time period. Similarly, the cascade reservoir alleviated winter and spring droughts in the Hongshuihe River Basin. However, autumn drought was aggravated with severity increased by 41.9% in September and by 160.9% in October, so that the land surface models without considering human intervention must be used with caution in the hydrological simulation. The response lags of the VCI (Vegetation Condition Index) to hydrological drought were different in the sub-basins. The response lag for the Hongshuihe, Yujiang, and Liujiang River Basins were mostly 0–4 months, 0–1 months, and 2–3 months, respectively, but there was no obvious regular change pattern in the Guijiang River Basin. • We proposed a two-step calibration based parameter regionalization method. • This method combines spatial proximity method and RS ET based parameter calibration method. • The proposed regionalization method achieves the overall best model performance. • The accuracy of RS ET is the main factor affecting the performance of the proposed method. Runoff prediction in ungauged catchments is an important and challenging research topic in the field of hydrology. However, traditional parameter regionalization methods may not be applicable in regions with sparsely distributed hydrological stations. Remote sensing (RS) evapotranspiration (ET) products provide valuable information for model parameter estimations. This study aimed to improve the accuracy of hydrological modeling in ungauged catchments by combining the traditional spatial proximity (SP) method with the RS ET-based parameter calibration method to form a two-step calibration-based regionalization method (SP-bcET method using bias-corrected RS ET data and SP-rawET method using raw RS ET data). The proposed regionalization scheme is demonstrated by using the variable infiltration capacity model in the Yangtze River Basin, China, and its performance was evaluated and compared with the SP method and two RS ET-based parameter calibration schemes (bcET method using bias-corrected RS ET data and rawET method using raw RS ET data). The results indicate that the bcET method performs better than the rawET method, the SP method outperforms the RS ET-based parameter calibration method, and the SP-bcET and SP-rawET methods achieve the best overall performance among the five methods. Taking the simulated streamflow at a daily scale in the calibration period as an example, the average Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient of efficiency for the SP, bcET, rawET, SP-bcET, and SP-rawET methods were 0.69, 0.61, 0.56, 0.71, and 0.71, respectively. Moreover, the SP-bcET and SP-rawET methods improved the simulation of the temporal dynamics and spatial variability of soil moisture anomalies. The accuracy of the RS ET data was one of the most dominant factors affecting the performance of the proposed parameter regionalization scheme. The SP-bcET method is expected to perform better than the SP method in warmer catchments or when gauged catchments are sparely distributed. The findings demonstrate the great potential of combining the traditional parameter regionalization and RS ET-based parameter calibration methods in hydrological simulations in ungauged catchments. In situ LA–ICP–MS trace elemental analysis has been applied to magnetite and ilmenite of the Taihe layered intrusion, Emeishan large igneous province, SW China, in order to understand better fractionation processes of magma and origin of Fe–Ti–V oxide ore deposits. The periodic reversals in Mg, Ti, Mn in magnetite and Mg, Sc in ilmenite are found in the Middle Zone of the intrusion and agree with fractionation trends as recorded by olivine (Fo), plagioclase (An) and clinopyroxene (Mg#) compositions. These suggest the Taihe intrusion formed from open magma chamber processes in a magma conduit with multiple replenishments of more primitive magmas. The V and Cr of magnetite are well correlated with V and Cr of clinopyroxene indicating that they became liquidus phases almost simultaneously at an early stage of magma evolution. Ilmenite from the Middle and Upper Zones shows variable Cr, Ni, V, Mg, Nb, Ta and Sc contents indicating that ilmenite at some stratigraphic levels crystallized slightly earlier than magnetite and clinopyroxene. The early crystallization of magnetite and ilmenite is the result of the high FeO t and TiO 2 contents in the parental magma. The ilmenite crystallization before magnetite in the Middle and Upper Zones can be attributed to higher TiO 2 content of the magma due to the remelting of pre-existing ilmenite in a middle-level magma chamber. Compared to the coeval high-Ti basalts, the relatively low Zr, Hf, Nb and Ta contents in both magnetite and ilmenite throughout the Taihe intrusion indicate that they crystallized from Fe–Ti–(P)-rich silicate magmas. Positive correlations of Ti with Mg, Mn, Sc and Zr of magnetite, and Zr with Sc, Hf and Nb of ilmenite also suggest that magnetite and ilmenite crystallized continuously from the homogeneous silicate magma rather than an immiscible Fe-rich melt. Therefore, frequent replenishments of Fe–Ti–(P)-rich silicate magma and gravitational sorting and settling are crucial for the formation the massive and apatite-rich disseminated ores in the Lower and Middle Zones of the Taihe intrusion. Abstract: The practice of urban power network planning in China is facing more and more complex risks. The nature of the risks themselves is unclear and uncertain. In order to ensure that urban power networks are planned in a scientific manner, a reasonable risk assessment needs to be performed. Based on extension analysis and the matter-element extension theory, a model of risk evaluation designed to be applied to urban power network planning is put forward in this paper. This model has the advantage that it conveniently quantifies the qualitative indices. At the same time, it also overcomes the main limitation of the matter-element method, namely, that if the risk index exceeds the risk grading standard, it can not be calculated using the correlation function. Finally, taking a specific urban power network as an example, the empirical analysis results show that this model is credible and practical. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Some hydrologic models oversimplify crop growth simulation. Although some studies coupled hydrologic models with crop models, there are several hypotheses and unconsidered factors in these studies, such as no irrigation. To improve simulation of discharge, soil moisture, and evapotranspiration, the Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) model was coupled with a crop growth model, incorporating an improved evapotranspiration module based on the soil water stress method. The new evapotranspiration module improved two water stress errors of the Environmental Policy Integrated Climate (EPIC) model. Considering the impact of agricultural irrigation and crop rotation, regional crop growth and hydrology were simulated in the upstream watershed of the Qingkou River in the east of China. Results of simulation by the Coupled Hydrology-Crop growth (CHC) model were compared with observed discharge data, measured soil moisture data, and evapotranspiration data obtained from remote sensing inversion. The daily Nash efficiency coefficient was 0.78 for the calibration period from 1978 to 2008 and was 0.76 for the verification period from 2009 to 2016. The simulated soil moisture was found to be significantly correlated with observed soil moisture, better than the simulation by the VIC model alone. The daily efficiency coefficient of the CHC model simulation increased by 0.13 for the verification period compared with that of the VIC model; and the transpiration module of the CHC model had the best simulation accuracy among the VIC, EPIC, and CHC transpiration modules. Combined with observed data, the reason for the water stress error of the EPIC model, reported by some references, was found: A parameter needs to be further adjusted combined with the actual condition instead of being constant. Thus, the coupled hydrology and crop growth model improved the simulation of hydrological elements and can help guide the efficient use of water resources and adjustment of agricultural cropping practices. • VIC and EPIC models are coupled with the irrigation, reservoir, and gridded routing models. • Coupled Hydrology-Crop growth model simulates flow, soil moisture, and evapotranspiration well. • Errors in soil water stress causes uncertainty in the simulation of hydrological elements. • CHC model has higher accuracy than the VIC model because of the dynamic growth process. • Improved transpiration module decreases error of evapotranspiration by the EPIC model. Proteinuria is a biomarker of kidney injury that typically results from glomerular and/or tubulointerstitial disease. Whereas kidney impairment with normal urinary protein excretion is usually less focused and understudied. We conducted a retrospective review of the renal histopathology of the patients with variable degrees of unexplained renal insufficiency but with normal range proteinuria between 2014 and 2024 of  three university teaching hospitals in Shenzhen city of Southern  China. Patients with kidney dysfunction of undetermined or uncertain etiology and with normal urinary protein excretion (defined by a 24hr urinary protein excretion < 150 mg or spot urinary protein to creatinine ratio [PCR] < 150 mg/g) were enrolled and analyzed. In a total of 2405 patients, 53 (2.2%) fulfilled the inclusion criteria  (male/female 40/13, age 47.3 ± 14.3 years) with a mean eGFR of 46.6 ± 16.8 ml/min per 1.73 m 2 . Glomerular disease (GD) was the most frequent pathological finding identified in 23 (43.4%) patients, while 19 (35.8%) cases  showed tubulointerstitial disease (TID) and 11 (20.8%) patients exhibited small vascular disease (SVD). Patients in the TID had the lowest mean eGFR and the highest numerical 24hr urinary protein excretion among the three groups. The incidence of acute kidney injury was significantly higher in TID than in other two groups. The patients in the SVD group had the highest fraction of underlying hypertension. Kidney dysfunction with normal range proteinuria may be related with, in descending order of probablity,  glomerular, tubulointerstitial and small vascular diseases. Objectives: Evidence on the link between long-term ambient particulate matter (PM) exposures and childhood sleep disorders were scarce. We examined the associations between long-term exposures to PM 2.5 and PM 1 (PM with an aerodynamic equivalent diameter <2.5 μm and <1 μm, respectively) with sleep disorders in children., Methods: We performed a population-based cross-sectional survey in 177,263 children aged 6 to 18 years in 14 Chinese cities during 2012-2018. A satellite-based spatiotemporal model was employed to estimate four-year annual average PM 2.5 and PM 1 exposures at residential and school addresses. Parents or guardians completed a checklist using the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children. We estimated the associations using generalized linear mixed models with adjustment for characteristics of children, parents, and indoor environments., Results: Long-term PM 2.5 and PM 1 exposures were positively associated with odds of sleep disorders for almost all domains. For example, increments in PM 2.5 and PM 1 per 10 μg/m 3 were associated with odds ratios of global sleep disorder of 1.24 (95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.14, 1.35) and 1.31 (95 %CI: 1.18, 1.46), respectively. Similar results were observed for subtypes of sleep disorder. These associations were heterogeneous regionally, with stronger associations among children residing in southeast region than in northeast and northwest regions. Objective: To analyze the prevalence, genotype distribution and hematological characteristics of α,β-thalassaemia carriers in Huizhou area of Guangdong Province., Methods: 10 809 carriers of simple β-thalassaemia and 1 757 carriers of α,β-thalassaemia were enrolled as our study cohort. The hematological parameters were detected by automated blood cell counters and automatic capillary electrophoresis. Suspension array technology, gap-polymerase chain reaction (gap-PCR) and PCR-reverse dot blot were used for the genotyping of thalassaemia carriers., Results: The prevalence of α,β-thalassaemia in Huizhou area of Guangdong Province was 1.99%. A total of 62 genotypes were detected, and the most prevalent genotype was -- SEA / αα , β CD41-42 / β N (19.29%), the next was -- SEA / αα , β IVS-II-654 / β N (16.73%). Significant differences in mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) were found between different genotype groups for simple β-thalassaemia and α,β-thalassaemia. Violin plots showed that carriers with co-inheritance of β-thalassaemia and mild α-thalassaemia expressed the lightest anemia, and carriers with co-inheritance of β-thalassaemia and hemoglobin H (Hb H) disease expressed the most severe anemia., Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of α,β-thalassaemia in Huizhou area of Guangdong Province. Because of the lack of specific hematological makers for diagnosis of α,β-thalassaemia, it is necessary to distinguish it from simple β-thalassaemia by genotyping of α- and β-thalassaemia in order to correctly guide genetic counseling and prenatal disgnosis.

Biomass energy as a kind of renewable energy would be one of the industry's future development direction. As a high energy consumption country, China is urgent need of developing the renewable energy. Understanding the distribution and components of biomass could be beneficial to guide the utilizing technologies and investment strategy of biomass residual. The comprehensive statistical methods were applied to calculate the potential biomass residual of each provinces in China. The results show that (1) Nationwide, the residues biomass of agricultural, forest, and urban waste accounted for 64.16%, 10.88%, and 24.96% of total biomass residual, respectively. The intensity of agricultural, forest, and urban waste biomass residual were 1.89, 0.32, and 0.74 PJ per km 2 year, respectively. (2) The agricultural biomass residual in eastern China was more abundant than that in western China. The straw residues, agricultural processing residues, livestock manure and pruning residues from permanent orchard respectively shared 32.24%, 10.62%, 56.0%, and 1.13%. (3) The stem wood with its intensity 0.29 PJ per km 2 year was major contributor of forest biomass residual (with its intensity 0.32 PJ per km 2 year). The forest biomass residual in northern and southern China was larger than that in eastern and western China, but the intensity of forest biomass residual in southern China was larger than that in the other provinces. (4) The intensity of forest biomass was 0.74 PJ per km 2 year, which was mainly contributed by urban greenery management outside forests (0.736 PJ per km 2 ). Background: Delivery room resuscitation assists preterm infants, especially extremely preterm infants (EPI) and extremely low birth weight infants (ELBWI), in breathing support, while it potentially exerts a negative impact on the lungs and outcomes of preterm infants. This study aimed to assess delivery room resuscitation and discharge outcomes of EPI and ELBWI in China., Methods: The clinical data of EPI (gestational age [GA] <28 weeks) and ELBWI (birth weight [BW] <1000 g), admitted within 72 h of birth in 33 neonatal intensive care units from five provinces and cities in North China between 2017 and 2018, were analyzed. The primary outcomes were delivery room resuscitation and risk factors for delivery room intubation (DRI). The secondary outcomes were survival rates, incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), and risk factors for BPD., Results: A cohort of 952 preterm infants were enrolled. The incidence of DRI, chest compressions, and administration of epinephrine was 55.9% (532/952), 12.5% (119/952), and 7.0% (67/952), respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that the risk factors for DRI were GA <28 weeks (odds ratio [OR], 3.147; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.082-4.755), BW <1000 g (OR, 2.240; 95% CI, 1.606-3.125), and antepartum infection (OR, 1.429; 95% CI, 1.044-1.956). The survival rate was 65.9% (627/952) and was dependent on GA. The rate of BPD was 29.3% (181/627). Multivariate analysis showed that the risk factors for BPD were male (OR, 1.603; 95% CI, 1.061-2.424), DRI (OR, 2.094; 95% CI, 1.328-3.303), respiratory distress syndrome exposed to ≥2 doses of pulmonary surfactants (PS; OR, 2.700; 95% CI, 1.679-4.343), and mechanical ventilation ≥7 days (OR, 4.358; 95% CI, 2.777-6.837). Purpose: Microplastics have been widely detected in the environment and marine organisms. However, few studies have investigated the presence of microplastics in humans. This preliminary study identified and quantified the microplastic content in human feces., Methods: A total of 26 young male students aged 18-25 years were recruited from Beijing, China. A self-administered 7-day 24-h fluid intake record was used to document fluid intake, and food intake was recorded for 3 days. Feces were collected by participants using a sterile fecal collector. Microplastics in the remaining fecal residues were measured and identified using fourier transform infrared micro-spectroscopy., Results: Eventually, twenty-four participants completed the study. The fecal samples of 23 (95.8%) participants tested positive for microplastics. In these 23 samples, the abundance of microplastics varied from 1 particle/g to 36 particles/g (size 20 to 800 μm). The summed mass of all microplastic particles per participant ranged from 0.01 to 14.6 mg. Qualitative analysis of the microplastics indicated the presence of one to eight types of microplastics in each sample, with polypropylene (PP) being the most abundant; it was found in 95.8% of fecal samples. We examined associations between water intake habits and the abundance of microplastics in their feces. A moderate correlation was observed between packaged water and beverage intake and microplastic abundance in feces (r = 0.445, P = 0.029)., Conclusion: Various types of microplastics were detected in human feces, with PP being found in the highest proportion. Background: Most organ donation coordinators suffer varying degrees of anxiety, depression and poor sleep caused by constant work pressure, and their professional identity is only at a medium level. All of this leads to a great risk of job burnout. Objective: To identify the influencing factors of and effective countermeasures against job burnout among organ donation coordinators. Method: Semistructured interviews were used for data collection. In-person or phone interviews were conducted from December 2017 to June 2018. Results: 12 organ donation coordinators who came from 7 different provinces and cities in China were interviewed. The interview data were sorted, and relevant topics were extracted and summarized in terms of two aspects, namely, factors that influenced job burnout in organ donation coordinators and effective countermeasures for dealing with job burnout. Conclusion: Factors influencing job burnout among organ donation coordinators include personal factors, job responsibilities, salary and benefit factors, and donor family factors. Across four sites along a 3000-4130 m a.s.l. gradient spanning 5.3 °C in growing season temperature in Mt. Gongga, Sichuan, China, we collected plant functional trait and vegetation data from control plots, open top chambers (OTCs), and reciprocally transplanted vegetation turfs. Over five years, we recorded vascular plant composition in 140 experimental treatment and control plots. We collected trait data associated with plant resource use, growth, and life history strategies (leaf area, leaf thickness, specific leaf area, leaf dry matter content, leaf C, N and P content and C and N isotopes) from local populations and from experimental treatments. The database consists of 6,671 plant records and 36,743 trait measurements (increasing the trait data coverage of the regional flora by 500%) covering 11 traits and 193 plant taxa (ca. 50% of which have no previous published trait data) across 37 families.
