Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is common in older adults and may also be an early marker for future cognitive impairment. Depression is an important influencing factor for subjective cognitive decline in old age. However, the mediating effects of general self-efficacy in depression and subjective cognition are yet to be explored. This study included 308 participants who were ≥60 years. Participants were asked to complete the self-report measures of the Geriatric Depression Scale-15 (GDS-15), Subjective Cognitive Decline-Questionnaire (SCD-Q), and General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES). We used correlations, regressions, and structural equation models for the analyses. The bootstrapping method was performed to confirm the mediation effect. The subjective cognitive decline was found to be significantly and positively correlated to depression. Bootstrapping mediation analyses indicated that depression could affect SCD not only directly but also indirectly through general self-efficacy. General self-efficacy partly played a mediating role between depression and SCD. This study explored the relationship between social support and subjective well-being of the rural Chinese older adults and investigated whether self-worth could mediate this association. A total number of 356 older adults from rural areas of China were investigated using three scales. The results were as follows: there were significant correlations between social support, self-worth, and subjective well-being (where P < 0.01 in all of them). Bootstrapping mediation analyses indicated that self-worth partly mediated the association between social support and subjective well-being. Background Mental health is a growing concern among older people all over the world. China has a rapidly aging population, and the number of elderly empty-nesters, who have no children or whose children have already left home, is on the rise. These older adults live alone or with a spouse. Therefore, we should be concerned about these empty-nester, especially their mental health, due to its vital role. Methods This cross-sectional study was performed from March to December 2015. The participants were 350 empty-nest elderly adults from Chifeng City in Inner Mongolia. Data were collected with the Elderly Mental Health Questionnaire, the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised Short Scale for Chinese (EPQ-RSC) and the Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire. For the analyses, correlations, regressions, and structural equation models were used. Bootstrapping was performed to confirm the mediation effect. Results The mean age of the study population was 70.33 ± 6.67 years. Mental health showed significant correlations with extraversion, neuroticism, and coping style (all P ＜0.01). Extraversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism were the independent variables, while mental health was the dependent variable in the linear regression model with stepwise analysis. Extraversion and neuroticism were entered into the regression equation. All standardized coefficients ( β ) were significant (all P <0.01) in the model, and bootstrapping indicated that the mediating role of coping style was statistically significant. Conclusion Coping style partially mediated the relationship between the personality and mental health of the empty-nest elderly. Growing studies suggest that air pollution exposure is an emerging driver for neurological diseases, but existing evidence on the association between air pollution and epilepsy is scarce. Here, we aimed to quantitatively estimated the short-term effects of various air pollutants on childhood epilepsy hospitalizations in China. We obtained daily electronic health records on childhood epilepsy hospitalizations and air pollutants (PM 2.5 , PM 10-2.5 , PM 10 , SO 2 , NO 2 , O 3) from 2016 through 2018 in 10 cities of Anhui Province in China. In the first stage, a space–time-stratified case-crossover analysis was employed to evaluate the short-term association of childhood epilepsy hospitalizations with each air pollutant in Anhui Province. In the second stage, short-term effect of air pollution on childhood epilepsy morbidity reported in Anhui Province and in previous studies was pooled with a random-effect meta -analysis model to get the overall effect of different air pollutants in eastern China. This study included 8,181 childhood epilepsy patients from 10 cities in Anhui province of China. The first stage case-crossover analysis in Anhui province found significant associations between higher concentrations of all air pollutants (except O 3) and increased risk of childhood epilepsy hospitalizations. Each 10 μg/m3 increase in PM 2.5 , PM 10-2.5 , PM 10 , SO 2 , and NO 2 concentrations was associated with an increase of 1.1 % [95 % confidence interval (CI): 0.1 %-2.1 %], 1.7 % (95 %CI: 0.5 %-2.9 %), 0.8 % (95 %CI: 0.1 %-1.4 %), 8.5 % (95 %CI: 1.5 %-16.0 %), and 4.3 % (95 %CI: 2.3 %-6.3 %) in epilepsy hospitalizations, respectively. We also observed greater effects of particulate matter in cold season. The second stage meta -analysis that additionally included two prior studies with 43,002 patients from other 11 cities found a marginally significant increase in childhood epilepsy attacks associated with PM 2.5 , PM 10 , and NO 2 in eastern China. Short-term exposure to both particulate matter and gaseous air pollution was associated with an increased risk of childhood epilepsy exacerbation in eastern China. Ambient heat exposure is a risk factor for suicide in many regions of the world. However, little is known about the extent to which life expectancy has been shortened by heat-related suicide deaths. This study aimed to evaluate the short-term effects of heat on suicide mortality and quantify the reduced life expectancy associated with heat in China. A time-stratified, case-crossover analysis in 2023 was performed during the warm season (May to September) from 2016 to 2020 to assess the short-term association between extreme heat (the 95th percentile of mean temperature) and suicide mortality in Anhui Province, China. A subgroup analysis was performed according to sex, age, marital status, suicide type, and region. The attributable fraction and years of life lost due to heat were calculated, and the heat-related life expectancy loss was estimated. This study included 9,642 suicide deaths, with an average age of 62.4 years and 58.8% of suicides in males. Suicide risk was associated with an 80.7% increase (95% confidence interval [CI]: 21.4%–68.9%) after exposure to extreme heat (30.6°C) in comparison to daily minimum temperature (7.9°C). Subgroup analysis revealed that heat-related suicide risk was more prominent in the married population than in the unmarried population. Heat was estimated to be associated with 31.7% (95% CI: 18.0%–43.2%) of the suicides, corresponding to 7.0 years of loss in life expectancy for each decedent. Mud crab reovirus (MCRV) is the causative agent of a severe disease in cultured mud crab ( Scylla paramamosain ), which has caused huge economic losses in China. MCRV is a double-stranded RNA virus with 12 genomic segments. In this paper, SDS-PAGE, mass spectrometry and Western blot analyses revealed that the VP12 protein encoded by S12 gene is a structural protein of MCRV. Immune electron microscopy assay indicated that MCRV VP12 is a component of MCRV outer shell capsid. Yeast two hybrid cDNA library of mud crab was constructed and mud crab voltage-dependent anion-selective channel (mcVDAC) was obtained by MCRV VP12 screening. The full length of mcVDAC was 1180 bp with an open reading frame (ORF) of 849 bp encoding a 282 amino acid protein. The mcVDAC had a constitutive expression pattern in different tissues of mud crab. The interaction between MCRV VP12 and mcVDAC was determined by co-immunoprecipitation assay. Radix Paeoniae Alba (Baishao, RPA) has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine formulation to treat hypertension by repression the hyperfunction of liver. However, whether the RPA itself has the antihypertensive effect or not is seldom studied. This study was to evaluate the protective effect of RPA on hypertensive rats. Alcohol in conjunction with a high fat diet- (ACHFD-) induced hypertensive rats and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) was constantly received either RPA extract (25 or 75 mg/kg) or captopril (15 mg/kg) all along the experiments. As a result, RPA extract (75 mg/kg) could significantly reduce systolic blood pressure of both ACHFD-induced hypertensive rats and SHR after 9-week or 4-week treatment. In ACHFD-induced hypertensive rats, the blood pressure was significantly increased and the lipid profiles in serum including triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol were significantly deteriorated. Also, hepatic damage was manifested by a significant increase in alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) in serum. The RPA extract significantly reversed these parameters, which revealed that it could alleviate the liver damage of rats. This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with suicidal ideation in schizophrenia patients in China using decision tree and logistic regression models. From October 2020 to March 2022, patients with schizophrenia were chosen from Chifeng Anding Hospital and Daqing Third Hospital in Heilongjiang Province. A total of 300 patients with schizophrenia who met the inclusion criteria were investigated by questionnaire. The questionnaire covered general data, suicidal ideation, childhood trauma, social support, depressive symptoms and psychological resilience. Logistic regression analysis revealed that childhood trauma and depressive symptoms were risk factors for suicidal ideation in schizophrenia (OR = 2.330, 95%CI: 1.177 ~ 4.614; OR = 10.619, 95%CI: 5.199 ~ 21.688), while psychological resilience was a protective factor for suicidal ideation in schizophrenia (OR = 0.173, 95%CI: 0.073 ~ 0.409). The results of the decision tree model analysis demonstrated that depressive symptoms, psychological resilience and childhood trauma were influential factors for suicidal ideation in patients with schizophrenia (p < 0.05). The area under the ROC for the logistic regression model and the decision tree model were 0.868 (95% CI: 0.821 ~ 0.916) and 0.863 (95% CI: 0.814 ~ 0.912) respectively, indicating excellent accuracy of the models. Meanwhile, the logistic regression model had a sensitivity of 0.834 and a specificity of 0.743 when the Youden index was at its maximum. The decision tree model had a sensitivity of 0.768 and a specificity of 0.8. Abstract: Heavy-ion beams at 106 particles per second have been applied to the treatment of deep-seated inoperable tumors in the therapy terminal of the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL) which is located at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMP, CAS). An accurate low current measurement circuit following a Faraday cup was developed to monitor the beam current at pA range. The circuit consisted of a picoammeter with a bandwidth of 1kHz and a gated integrator (GI). A low input bias current precision amplifier and new guarding and shielding techniques were used in the picoammeter circuit which allowed as to measure current less than 1pA with a current gain of 0.22V/pA and noise less than 10fA. This paper will also describe a novel compensation approach which reduced the charge injection from switches in the GI to 10−18 C, and a T-switch configuration which was used to eliminate leakage current in the reset switch. Aim: To investigate the sleep quality status and its associated factors (including psychological and physiological as well as social demographic factors) among Chinese mainland adolescents. Methods: Ten schools, including junior schools, senior schools and universities of Hefei (the capital of Anhui Province in China), were randomly selected. By using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Self-Rated Health Measurement Scale Version 1.0, University of California, Los Angeles, Loneliness Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, Self-rating Anxiety Scale and a demographic survey, a cross-sectional study was implemented to 5226 students of the selected schools to investigate the adolescents' sleep quality, self-rated health, psychological status and demographic variables. Results: There were significant sleep quality differences between different groups of grade level, residence, family type, self-report personality, self-report examination scores, self-rated health, depression, loneliness and anxiety according to the results of the univariate analysis ( P < 0.01 or <0.05). The multivariate analysis indicated that high grade level (OR = 1.490, 95%CI = 1.350-1.645), living in rural areas (OR = 0.874, 95%CI = 0.799-0.956), poor self-rated health (OR = 0.934, 95%CI = 0.926-0.942), high degree of depression (OR = 1.867, 95%CI = 1.514-2.302) and anxiety (OR = 1.976, 95%CI = 1.647-2.372) may be the influencing factors of poor sleep. In terms of the instruments, Self-rated Health Measurement Scale Version 1.0, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, UCLA Loneliness Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, Self-rating Anxiety Scale and the demographic survey were used in the present study. Results: The sleep quality, self-rated health and degree of depression, anxiety and loneliness among different grade levels were different (p < 0.01 or <0.05). The multivariate analysis indicated that young age, poor sleep quality and high degree of depression, anxiety and loneliness were significantly associated with poor self-rated health of adolescents. Conclusion: The adolescents' poor self-rated health may be attributed to many causes especially the psychological reasons. This paper investigates how the plural needs of different groups are handled by redevelopment planning. Investigating the redevelopment of villages-in-the-city in Guangzhou, this paper examines how the differing interests of indigenous villagers are being considered and resolved through a local initiative – ‘one village one policy’. Case studies from three villages are drawn upon to examine how local conditions and concerns are being tackled in each village's respective redevelopment plan. Different degree of government intervention in the planning of the three villages suggests that local distinctiveness is defined by the authorities in accordance with their agenda. Further, the exclusion of migrant workers suggests their needs and interests are totally overlooked in the redevelopment process. Background: There was an outbreak of COVID-19 towards the end of 2019 in China, which spread all over the world rapidly. The Chinese healthcare system is facing a big challenge where hospital workers are experiencing enormous psychological pressure. This study aimed to (1) investigate the psychological status of hospital workers and (2) provide references for psychological crisis intervention in the future.Method: An online survey was conducted to collect sociodemographic features, epidemic-related factors, results of PHQ-9, GAD-7, PHQ-15, suicidal and self-harm ideation (SSI), and the score of stress and support scales. Chi-square test, t-test, non-parametric, and logistic regression analysis were used to detect the risk factors to psychological effect and SSI.Results: 8817 hospital workers participated in this online survey. The prevalence of depression, anxiety, somatic symptoms, and SSI were 30.2%, 20.7%, 46.2%, and 6.5%, respectively. Logistic regression analysis showed that female, single, Tujia minority, educational background of junior or below, designated or county hospital, need for psychological assistance before or during the epidemic, unconfident about defeating COVID-19, ignorance about the epidemic, willingness of attending parties, and poor self-rated health condition were independent factors associated with high-level depression, somatic symptom, and SSI among hospital workers (P<0.05).Limitations: This cross-sectional study cannot reveal the causality, and voluntary participation could be prone to selection bias. A modified epidemic-related stress and support scale without standardization was used. The number of hospital workers in each hospital was unavailable.Conclusion: There were a high level of psychological impact and SSI among hospital workers, which needed to be addressed. County hospital workers were more severe and easier to be neglected. More studies on cognitive and behavioral subsequence after a public health disaster among hospital workers are needed. Existing studies suggested that ambient temperature may affect the attack of acute appendicitis. However, the identification of the quantitative effect and vulnerable populations are still unknown. The purposes of this study were to quantify the impact of daily mean temperature on the hospitalization of acute appendicitis and clarify vulnerable groups, further guide targeted prevention of acute appendicitis in Tongling. Daily data of cases and meteorological factors were collected in Tongling, China, during 2015–2019. Time stratified case-crossover design and conditional logistic regression model were used to evaluate the odds ratio (OR) of ambient temperature on hospitalizations for acute appendicitis. Stratified analyses were performed by sex, age, and marital status. The odds ratio (OR) of hospitalizations for acute appendicitis increased by 1.6% for per 1 ℃ rise in mean temperature at lag3[OR = 1.016, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.004–1.028]. In addition, our results suggest it is in the women that increased ambient temperature is more likely to contribute to acute appendicitis hospitalizations; we also found that the married are more susceptible to acute appendicitis hospitalizations due to increased ambient temperature than the unmarried; people in the 21–40 years old are more sensitive to ambient temperature than other age groups. The significant results of the differences between the subgroups indicate that the differences between the groups are all statistically significant. The elevated ambient temperatures increased the risk of hospitalizations for acute appendicitis. The females, married people, and patients aged 21–40 years old were more susceptible to ambient temperature. Simple Summary: Aphids are major crop pests worldwide, and in China, Uroleucon formosanum is a common aphid pest of lettuce. However, there is little basic and applied information on the control of this pest. To obtain the basic information of this pest, a life table of U. formosanum under different temperatures was constructed. Also, the susceptibility of U. formosanum to six common-used insecticides (chlorpyrifos, abamectin, beta-cypermethrin, imidacloprid, nitenpyram, and thiamethoxam) was evaluated. Results showed that U. formosanum was not suitable to a lower temperature (17 °C), and U. formosanum was relatively sensitive to all six test insecticides. These data may help us to develop integrated management strategies for better population control of U. formosanum. Uroleucon formosanum is an important aphid pest of lettuce, but basic information on its biology is scarce. In this study, effects of three constant temperatures (17, 21, and 25 °C, simulating the mean temperature range in greenhouses) on the development and fecundity of U. formosanum were analyzed by constructing a life table. U. formosanum could develop and reproduce under all three temperatures, but the survival rate, development, and fecundity of U. formosanum were affected by temperature. The intrinsic rate of increase was lowest at 17 °C (0.17) and it was significantly less than at 21 °C (0.20) and 25 °C (0.23). Furthermore, U. formosanum had the lowest finite rate of increase (1.19) and the largest mean generation time (20.21) at 17 °C. These results mean that U. formosanum is less adapted to the lower temperatures (17 °C) among these three set temperatures. To screen insecticides for control, susceptibility of U. formosanum to six insecticides including chlorpyrifos, abamectin, beta-cypermethrin, imidacloprid, nitenpyram, and thiamethoxam was evaluated. U. formosanum was relatively sensitive to all six test insecticides. Chlorpyrifos had the highest toxicity to U. formosanum (LC50 = 3.08 mg/L). The effect of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) components on prediabetes and diabetes is of concern, but the evidence is limited and the specific role of different green space types remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the relationship of PM 2.5 and its components with prediabetes and diabetes as well as the potential health benefits of different types and combinations of green spaces. A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted in eastern China by using a multi-stage random sampling method. Health screening and questionnaires for 98,091 participants were performed during 2017–2020. PM 2.5 and its five components were estimated by the inverse distance weighted method, and green space was reflected by the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), percentages of tree or grass cover. Multivariate logistic regression and quantile g-computing were used to explore the associations of PM 2.5 and five components with prediabetes and diabetes and to elucidate the potential moderating role of green space and corresponding type combinations in these associations. Each interquartile range (IQR) increment of PM 2.5 was associated with both prediabetes (odds ratio [OR]: 1.15, 95%CI [confidence interval]: 1.10–1.20) and diabetes (OR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.11–1.25), respectively. All five components of PM 2.5 were related to prediabetes and diabetes. The ORs of PM 2.5 on diabetes were 1.49 (1.35–1.63) in the low tree group and 0.90 (0.82–0.98) in the high tree group, respectively. In the high tree-high grass group, the harmful impacts of PM 2.5 and five components were significantly lower than in the other groups. Our study suggested that PM 2.5 and its components were associated with the increased risk of prediabetes and diabetes, which could be diminished by green space. Furthermore, the coexistence of high levels of tree and grass cover provided greater benefits. Background: Preterm birth, the birth of an infant prior to 37 completed weeks of gestation, is the leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality. Preterm infants are at greater risk of respiratory, gastrointestinal and neurological diseases. Despite significant research in developed countries, little is known about the causes of preterm birth in many developing countries, especially China. This study investigates the association between sciodemographic data, obstetric risk factor, and preterm birth in five Maternal and Child Health hospitals in Beijing, China. Methods and Findings: A case-control study was conducted on 1391 women with preterm birth (case group) and 1391 women with term delivery (control group), who were interviewed within 48 hours of delivery. Sixteen potential factors were investigated and statistical analysis was performed by univariate analysis and logistic regression analysis. Univariate analysis showed that 14 of the 16 factors were associated with preterm birth. Inter-pregnancy interval and inherited diseases were not risk factors. Logistic regression analysis showed that obesity (odds ratio (OR) = 3.030, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.166- 7.869), stressful life events (OR = 5.535, 95%CI 2.315-13.231), sexual activity (OR = 1.674, 95%CI 1.279-2.191), placenta previa (OR 13.577, 95%CI 2.563-71.912), gestational diabetes mellitus (OR = 3.441, 95%CI1.694-6.991), hypertensive disorder complicating pregnancy (OR = 6.034, 95%CI = 3.401-10.704), history of preterm birth (OR = 20.888, 95%CI 2.519-173.218) and reproductive abnormalities (OR = 3.049, 95%CI 1.010-9.206) were independent risk factors. Women who lived in towns and cities (OR = 0.603, 95%CI 0.430-0.846), had a balanced diet (OR = 0.533, 95%CI 0.421-0.675) and had a record of prenatal care (OR = 0.261, 95%CI 0.134-0.510) were less likely to have preterm birth. Abstract: Organic films, collected from indoor and outdoor window surfaces in Guangzhou and Hong Kong of South China, were analyzed to quantify their organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) content. The highest concentrations of OC, EC, and BDE-209 were found in Guangzhou with values of 10 000 μg m−2, 2200 μg m−2, and 4000 ng m−2, respectively, and the highest concentration of Σ7PBDE (sum of BDE-28, -47, -99, -100, -153, -154 and -183) was found in Hong Kong with a value of 25 ng m−2. In most cases, the concentrations of PBDEs were higher in the exterior films than those in the interior films with BDE-209 as the predominant congener in both cities, suggesting that PBDEs mainly come from ambient environment, and deca-BDE accounts for major PBDE consumption. The growth rates of organic film on window surfaces were fast at the beginning, and reached a consistent level afterwards. The evolution rates ranged from 2.6 to 11 nm day−1 for “bulk film”, while from 0.06 to 0.92 nm day−1 for “pure film”. The concentrations of PBDEs on the window surfaces did not increase with the growth time, suggesting that the window surface may provide a good place for photo-degradation of PBDEs. Short-term exposure to ambient high temperature (heat) could increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, available evidence on the burden of daytime and nighttime heat on CVD is limited and vulnerable populations remain unknown so far. We aimed to examine and differentiate the impact of daytime and nighttime heat on CVD in China. Data on daily outpatient visits for CVD were collected from 15 Chinese cities spanning multiple geographical regions, climates, and socio-economic conditions. The population-weighted temperature was used to calculate excess heat exposure in warm seasons (June–September) from 2011 to 2015. Hot day excess (HDE) and hot night excess (HNE), the sum of temperature above the heat threshold during daytime and nighttime respectively, were used to represent daytime and nighttime excess heat. A distributed lag non-linear model was employed to estimate the city-level association between HDE/HNE and daily CVD cases. The city-level association was then pooled by multivariate meta-analysis. We further estimated the disease burden of CVD attributable to HDE and HNE by geographical regions, gender, and age. A total of 729,409 cases of CVD were included in this study. Both HDE and HNE were associated with an increased risk of CVD, with greater effects from nighttime heat (relative risk (RR): 1.38; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.18–1.61) than daytime heat (RR: 1.10; 95% CI: 1.05–1.15). The proportion of CVD cases attributable to HNE was 15.7%, which was almost three times as high as HDE (4.6%, p for difference <0.05). Males, people living in northern cities, and those aged less than 45 years were more vulnerable to HNE. Our findings for the first time revealed an intra-day difference in the heat effect on CVD, with a greater impact from nighttime heat exposure, which should be considered to protect vulnerable populations on hot days. Background: Many studies have shown an association of childhood respiratory diseases with short-term temperature variability such as diurnal temperature range (DTR) and temperature change between two neighboring days (TCN). However, the impact of temperature variability on allergic rhinitis (AR) has not been investigated so far. This study sought to evaluate the short-term effect of temperature variability (i.e., TCN and DTR) on AR, as well as to identify vulnerable subpopulations.Method: We collected daily data on emergency room visits and outpatients for AR and weather variables in Hefei, China during 2014-2016. A distributed lag non-linear model that controlled for long-term trend and seasonality, mean temperature, relative humidity, day of week was used to fit the associations of AR with DTR and TCN. Stratified analyses by age, sex and occupation were also performed.Results: During the study period, there were a total of 53,538 cases and the average values of DTR and TCN were 8.4 °C (range: 1.0 °C to 21.2 °C) and 0 °C (range: - 12.2 °C to 5.9 °C), respectively. While we did not observe an adverse effect of DTR on AR, TCN was significantly associated with increased risk of AR. Specifically, a large temperature drop between two adjacent days (3.8 °C, 5th percentile of TCN) has a delayed and short-lasting effect on AR, with the estimated relative risk of 1.02 (95% confidence interval: 1.01 to 1.04) at lag 12. Moreover, boys and children older than 15 years seemed to be more vulnerable to the effect of TCN.Conclusions: This study provided evidence of an adverse effect of large temperature drops between two adjacent days on childhood AR. The relationship between environmental factors and allergic rhinitis (AR) has become a focal point recently. However, few studies have investigated the adverse effects of both high relative humidity (RH) and low relative humidity. Moreover, the laged effect and disease burden of RH on AR were also neglected. To explore the association of both high and low RH on daily AR hospital outpatients, and to quantify the corresponding disease burden attributable to RH. In our study, we define 95th as high RH and 5th as low RH. A distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) combined with a Poisson generalized linear regression model were applied to analyze the relationship between RH and hospital outpatients for AR. All patients were retrieved from Anhui Provincial Children's Hospital (n = 37,221) from January 2015 to December 2016. Daily meteorological and air pollutant data were collected by Hefei Meteorological Bureau and Environmental Protection Agency. Subgroup analyses were conducted by gender and occupational groups. Acute adverse effects of high and low RH on AR were explored respectively, with an increase of daily AR outpatients when encountered high and low RH. The low RH presented a risk effect at current day and lasted up to the eighth day. However, high RH began to appear a risk effect on the fourth day. Notably, the fraction of hospital outpatients attributable to low RH was 5.22% (95% CI: 1.92%, 8.33%) and high RH was 4.07% (95% CI: 1.13%, 7.30%) in the backward perspective. Additionally, male and students apparent to be more sensitive to the effects of low RH. This study suggests that both high and low RH are potential trigger for AR hospital outpatients in Hefei, China. Built environment exposure, characterized by ubiquity and changeability, has the potential to be the prospective target of public health policy. However, little research has been conducted to explore its impact on schizophrenia. This study aimed to investigate the association between built environmentand and schizophrenia rehospitalization by simultaneously considering substantial built environmental exposures. We recruited eligible schizophrenia patients from Hefei, Anhui Province, China between 2017 and 2019. The main outcome for this study was the time interval until the first recurrent hospital admission occurred within one year after discharge. For each included subject, we estimated the built environment exposures, including population density, walkability, land use mix, green and blue space, public transportation accessibility and road traffic indicator. Lasso (Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator) analysis was used to select the key variables. Multivariable Cox regression model was applied to obtain hazard ratio (HR) and its corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI). Further, we also evaluated the joint effects of built environment characteristics on rehospitalization for schizophrenia by Quantile g-computation model. A total of 1564 hospitalized schizophrenia patients were enrolled, with 347 patients (22.2%) had a rehospitalization within one-year after discharge. Multivariable Cox regression analysis indicated that the re-hospitalization rate for schizophrenia would be higher in areas with a high population density (HR: 1.10, 95%CI: 1.04–1.16). Nonetheless, compared to the reference (Q1), participants who lived in a neighborhood with the highest walkability and NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) (Q4) had a 76% and 47% lower risk of re-hospitalization within one year (HR:0.24, 95%CI: 0.13–0.45; and 0.53, 95%CI:0.32–0.85), respectively. Moreover, quantile-based g-computation analyses revealed that increased walkability and green space significantly eliminated the adverse effects of population density increases on schizophrenia patients, with a HR ratio of 0.61 (95%CI:0.48,0.79) per one quartile change at the same time. Background The M-type phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R) is a specific target autoantigen identified in idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN). The autoantibody against PLA2R (anti-PLA2R) may be used to diagnose IMN. However, the appropriate diagnosis cut-off value for Chinese patients with IMN has not been established. Methods In total, 119 patients who underwent renal biopsy (57 patients with IMN and 62 patients with non-IMN glomerulonephritis) and 22 healthy individuals were recruited for our observation study from Qianfoshan Hospital between September 2011 and March 2016. The serum concentration of anti-PLA2R was measured using a quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV) and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of anti-PLA2R in diagnosing IMN were analysed based on the ELISA detection. Results The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV of anti-PLA2R in the diagnosis of IMN in the Chinese patients were 82.5, 75, 69.1, and 86.3% for the 2 RU/ml cut-off value; 78.9, 91.7, 86.5, and 86.5% for the 2.6 RU/ml cut-off value; 59.6, 95.2, 89.5, and 77.7% for the 14 RU/ml cut-off value; 50.9, 96.4, 90.6, and 74.3% for the 20 RU/ml cut-off value; and 47.4, 97.6, 93.1, and 73.2% for the 40 RU/ml cut-off value, respectively. The area under the ROC curve was 0.879. Conclusions The cut-off value of 2.6 RU/ml is recommended for the use of anti-PLA2R for the diagnosis of IMN in Chinese patients based on the ELISA. Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is one of the most common communicable diseases in China, and current climate change had been recognized as a significant contributor. Nevertheless, no reliable models have been put forward to predict the dynamics of HFMD cases based on short-term weather variations. The present study aimed to examine the association between weather factors and HFMD, and to explore the accuracy of seasonal auto-regressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) model with local weather conditions in forecasting HFMD. Weather and HFMD data from 2009 to 2014 in Huainan, China, were used. Poisson regression model combined with a distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) was applied to examine the relationship between weather factors and HFMD. The forecasting model for HFMD was performed by using the SARIMA model. The results showed that temperature rise was significantly associated with an elevated risk of HFMD. Yet, no correlations between relative humidity, barometric pressure and rainfall, and HFMD were observed. SARIMA models with temperature variable fitted HFMD data better than the model without it (s R increased, while the BIC decreased), and the SARIMA (0, 1, 1)(0, 1, 0) offered the best fit for HFMD data. In addition, compared with females and nursery children, males and scattered children may be more suitable for using SARIMA model to predict the number of HFMD cases and it has high precision. In conclusion, high temperature could increase the risk of contracting HFMD. SARIMA model with temperature variable can effectively improve its forecast accuracy, which can provide valuable information for the policy makers and public health to construct a best-fitting model and optimize HFMD prevention. More studies focus on reporting the effects of ambient air pollution on physical activity while ignoring the hazards of indoor air pollution caused by household solid fuel use. Moreover, the impact of individual cognitive and depressive status on the health effects of air pollution is often overlooked. We examined the association between household solid fuel and activities of daily living (ADL) trajectories, and further examined this association in homogeneous subgroups of cognitive or depressive trajectories. Participants were from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, which conducted four waves of surveys from 2011 to 2018. We collected information on participants' household fuel use, then the ADL, cognitive and depressive performances were assessed in each wave. The latent growth mixture model (LGMM) was used to identify the optimal trajectory class for ADL, cognition, and depression. Then, the multinomial logistic regression was used to assess the association between solid fuel use and ADL trajectories in total population, as well as subgroups with different cognitive or depression trajectories. Furthermore, we examined the association between switching household fuel types and ADL trajectories across the four-wave survey. The study sample included 7052 participants. We identified three ADL trajectory classes in total population: "Low-stable", "Moderate-anterior rise", and "Moderate-posterior rise". The multinomial logistic regression results showed that solid fuel use was associated with elevated odds for the adverse ADL trajectories, and this association was still shown in homogeneous subgroups of cognitive or depressive trajectories, while some effects were less significant. In addition, the risk of adverse ADL trajectories generally increases with the times of solid fuel use across the four-wave survey. For middle and older adults in China, household solid fuel use was not conducive to physical activity development, which inspires that a further transformation to cleaner fuels is an important intervention. Although exposure to fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) has been associated with cognitive decline, little is known about which PM 2.5 constituents are more harmful. Recent study on the association between PM 2.5 and sleep quality prompted us to propose that sleep quality may mediate the adverse effects of PM 2.5 components on cognitive decline. Understanding the association between PM 2.5 constituents and cognitive function, as well as the mediating role of sleep quality provides a future intervention target for improving cognitive function. Using data involving 1834 participants from a multicenter cross-sectional study in nine cities of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region in China, we undertook multivariable linear regression analyses to quantify the association of annual moving-average PM 2.5 and its chemical constituents with cognitive function and to assess the modifying role of exposure characteristic in this association. Besides, we examined the extent to which this association of PM 2.5 constituents with cognitive function was mediated via sleep quality by a mediation analysis. We observed significantly negative associations between an increase of one interquartile range increase in PM 2.5 [−0.876 (95 % CI: −1.205, −0.548)], organic carbon [−0.481 (95 % CI: −0.744, −0.219)], potassium [−0.344 (95 % CI: −0.530, −0.157)], iron [−0.468 (95 % CI: −0.646, −0.291)], and ammonium ion [−0.125 (95 % CI: −0.197, −0.052)] and cognitive decline. However, we didn't find any individual components more harmful than PM 2.5. Poor sleep quality partially mediated the estimated associations, which were explained ranging from 2.28 % to 11.99 %. Stratification analyses showed that people living in areas with lower greenspace were more susceptible to specific PM 2.5 components. Our study suggests that the adverse effect of suffering from PM 2.5 components is more pronounced among individuals with poor sleep quality, amplifying environmental inequalities in health. Tet is a type of alkaloid extracted from Stephania tetrandra, and it has recently been demonstrated that Tet can protect against inflammation and free radical injury and inhibit the release of inflammatory mediators. The present study was designed to observe the protective effect of Tet on sodium taurocholate-induced severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). The rat model of SAP was induced by retrograde bile duct injection of sodium taurocholate and then treated with Verapamil and Tet. The results showed that Tet can reduce NF-κB activation in pancreas issue, inhibit the SAP cascade, and improve SAP through inducing pancreas acinar cell apoptosis and stabilizing intracellular calcium in the pancreas, thus mitigating the damage to the pancreas. Our study revealed that Tet may reduce systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and multiple organ dysfunction syndromes (MODS) to protect against damage, and these roles may be mediated through the NF-κB pathway to improve the proinflammatory/anti-inflammatory imbalance. Motor vehicle exhaust emissions have become the main source of urban air pollution in China, but few studies have explored the association of short-term exposure to traffic-related air pollutants (TRAPs) with anxiety disorders. Thus, we used an overdispersed, generalized additive model (GAM) to investigate the association between TRAPs and hospital admissions (HAs) for anxiety in Qingdao, a coastal Chinese city with high vehicle ownership. In addition, stratified analyses were performed by gender, age, season and hospitalization frequency (first admission and readmission). A positive association between TRAPs and HAs for anxiety was observed. Both inhalable particulate matter (PM 10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2) showed significant effects at lag 3 in the single-day lag structure, and each 10 μg/m3 increase in the concentrations was significantly associated with increases of 0.88% [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.04%, 1.72%] for PM 10 and 2.74% (0.45%, 5.08%) for NO 2 on anxiety hospitalizations. For fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) and carbon monoxide (CO), the strongest effects were found at lag05 and lag04 [2.67% (0.77%, 4.62%) and 0.19% (0.04%, 0.34%), respectively] in the multiday lag structure. The estimates of PM 2.5 were relatively robust after adjusting for other pollutants in the two-pollutant model. Stratified analyses indicated that the associations were stronger in females and younger individuals (<45 in age) than in males and elderly individuals (≥45 in age). Furthermore, the effects of PM 2.5 and CO were most obvious during the cold season. Regarding hospitalization frequency, only PM 2.5 was found to have a significant effect in the first-admission group. Ambient high temperature is a worldwide trigger for hypertension events. However, the effects of heat exposure on hypertension and years of life lost (YLL) due to heat remain largely unknown. We conducted a multicenter study in 13 cities in Jiangsu Province, China, to investigate 9727 individuals who died from hypertension during the summer months (May to September) between 2016 and 2017. Meteorological observation data (temperature and rainfall) and air pollutants (fine particulate matter and ozone) were obtained for each decedent by geocoding the residential addresses. A time-stratified case-crossover design was used to quantify the association between heat and different types of hypertension and further explore the modification effect of individual and hospital characteristics. Meanwhile, the YLL associated with heat exposure was estimated. Our results show that summer heat exposure shortens the YLL of hypertensive patients by a total of 14,74 years per month. Of these, 77.9% of YLL was mainly due to hypertensive heart disease. YLL due to heat was pronounced for essential hypertension (5.1 years (95% empirical confidence intervals (eCI): 4.1–5.8)), hypertensive heart and renal disease with heart failure (4.4 years (95% eCI: 0.9–5.9)), and hypertensive heart and renal disease (unspecified, 3.5 years (95% eCI: 1.8–4.5)). Moderate heat was associated with a larger YLL than extreme heat. The distance between hospitals and patients and the number of local first-class hospitals can significantly mitigate the adverse effect of heat exposure on longevity. Besides, unmarried people and those under 65 years of age were potentially susceptible groups, with average reduced YLL of 3.5 and 3.9 years, respectively. Our study reveals that heat exposure increases the mortality risk from many types of hypertension and YLL. Evidence of childhood asthma hospitalizations associated with temperature variability (TV) and the attributable risk are limited in China. We aim to use a comprehensive index that reflected both intra- and inter-day TV to assess the TV-childhood asthma relationship and disease burden, further to identify seasonality vulnerable populations, and to explore the effect modification of PM 2.5. A quasi-distributed lagged nonlinear model (DLNM) combined with a linear threshold function was applied to estimate the association between TV and childhood asthma hospitalizations during 2013–2016 in Hefei, China. Subgroup analysis was conducted by age and sex. Disease burden is reflected by the attributable fraction and attributable number. Besides, modifications of PM 2.5 were tested by introducing the cross-basis of TV and binary PM 2.5 as an interaction term. The risk estimates peaked at TV 0-3 and TV 0-4 in the cool and the warm season separately, with RR of 1.051 (95%CI: 1.021–1.081) and 1.072 (95%CI: 1.008–1.125), and the effects lasted longer in the cool season. The school-age children in the warm season and all subgroups except pre-school children in the cool season were vulnerable to TV. It is estimated that the disease burden related to TV account for 6.2% (95% CI: 2.7%–9.4%) and 4% (95% CI: 0.6%–7.1%) during the cool and warm seasons in TV 0-3. In addition, the risks of TV were higher under the high PM 2.5 level compared with the low PM 2.5 level in the cool season, although no significant differences between them. TV exposure significantly increases the risk and disease burden of childhood asthma hospitalizations, especially in the cool season. More medical resources should be allocated to school-age children. Giving priority to pay attention to TV in the cool season in practice could obtain the greatest public health benefits and those days with high TV and high PM 2.5 need more attention. Stigma is a common problem among people living with HIV/ AIDS ( PLWHA). However, little is known about HIV/ AIDS-related stigma in older PLWHA over the age of 50. This study described the stigma of HIV/ AIDS and its factors based on 120 PLWHA aged 50 or older in an area of high HIV prevalence in south rural China. Each participant completed a face-to-face questionnaire that collected information on demographic characteristics, AIDS-related events and experience of HIV/ AIDS-related stigma. Finally, only 18.1% reported experiencing external stigma compared with 64.3% feeling internal stigma. Regression analysis indicated that social support and health status were the two variables that were significantly predictive of both external and internal stigma. Whatever, the more support were received from family members by PLWHA, the less external stigma was perceived. Negative marital situation was also related to external stigma. Reducing HIV/ AIDS stigma requires a supportive environment, positive attitude and correct knowledge of AIDS. Health workers and policy makers should take practical approaches to reduce prejudice. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) for soybean seed size traits were stably detected in marker interval Satt640-Satt422 (approximately 25.5 cM) on chromosome 6 in our previous studies. However, little is known about whether these loci are derived from one major QTL or multiple linked QTL. To resolve this issue, 504 recombinant inbred lines (RILs, F) from the direct and reciprocal crosses of Lishuizhongzihuang with Nannong493-1 and 265 cultivars in China were used to fine-map the QTL. Inserted in the target interval were 22 simple sequence repeat markers in the RILs and 160 single nucleotide polymorphism markers in the cultivar population. As a result, seed length was associated with markers X40, X53, X83-X85 and X92, seed width was associated with markers X40, X53 and X83-X85, seed thickness was associated with markers X53, X83-X85 and X92, and 100-seed weight was associated with markers X40, X53, X83-X85 and X90-X92. This means that at least two common QTL among seed length, width and thickness were observed, and that the QTL for 100-seed weight was derived from those for its component traits, indicating their similar genetic bases. Using annotation project database and gene expression profile data, eight candidate genes were predicted. Of these genes, Glyma06g07200 (SNP097), Glyma06g07400, Glyma06g07400, Glyma06g07400 (SNP111), Glyma06g09650 (SNP332), Glyma06g08830 and Glyma06g08860 (X90-X92) may be involved in the process of seed development, and Glyma06g08800 (X83-X85) encodes ARM repeat superfamily protein, which is involved in the ubiquitination pathway regulating the development of seed size. Although glucocorticoids (GCs) are effective in inducing remission in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients, there is a significant variation in response to therapeutic GCs, and some patients do not achieve full remission. The aim of this study was to explore the impact of environmental factors on the efficacy of GCs in a Chinese population with SLE. This was a prospective cohort study, and a total of 260 SLE patients treated with GCs (prednisone) were followed up for 12 weeks. The efficacy of GCs was measured with the scores on SLE disease activity index. Environmental factors were collected using a questionnaire. Single-variable analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to discriminate the impact of environmental factors on the efficacy of GCs. Two hundred forty-seven patients (95.00 %) completed the 12-week follow-up. Among these patients, 131 (53.04 %) were classified into sensitive group and 116 (46.96 %) were classified into insensitive group. Results from logistic analysis showed that the following environmental factors were significantly associated with decreased efficacy of GCs: high salt intake (OR = 3.464, 95%CI = 1.481-8.102, P = 0.004), introverted personality (OR = 3.550, 95%CI = 1.901-6.628, P < 0.0001), experience with negative life events (OR = 5.526, 95%CI = 1.612-18.946, P = 0.007), and history of allergy (OR = 2.966, 95%CI = 1.312-6.704, P = 0.009). These results indicate that environmental factors, including salt intake, personality, experience with negative life events, and history of allergy, may play an important role in the efficacy of GCs in the Chinese population with SLE. Increasing studies reported increased mortality risk associated with exposure to lower-than-standard air pollution. This study aimed to investigate mortality burden and life expectancy loss due to lower-than-standard particulate matter air pollution in Hong Kong, China. We obtained 17-year (2000–2016) daily time-series data on mortality, particulate matters with aerodynamic diameters <2.5 μm (PM 2.5) and <10 μm (PM 10). We applied a distributed lag non-linear model to fit the association of years of life lost (YLL) with PM 2.5 and PM 10. Total YLL attributable to PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations below ambient air quality standards were estimated. We estimated 5.2% of total YLL due to PM 2.5 , of which, 33.5%, 52.8% and 94.5% occurred in concentrations not exceeding the criterion of WHO, the USA, and China, corresponding to 0.3, 0.4 and 0.7 years loss in life expectancy, respectively. There was 6.9% (annual 34434.4 YLL) of total YLL due to PM 10 , of which, 50.7%, 50.7%, 99.5% and 99.5% occurred in concentrations below the criterion of WHO, Europe, the USA, and China, which corresponded to 0.5, 0.5, 1 and 1 year loss in life expectancy, respectively. Assuming that PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations had met stricter standards, more gains in life expectancy could be expected in women than in men, in people aged up to 64 years than those of 65 years or older, and in those with respiratory disease than those with cardiovascular disease. Exposure to lower-than-standard particulate matters air pollution could shorten life expectancy and incur massive mortality burden in Hong Kong. • We observed a steeper slope of particulate matter-YLL relationship at lower concentration. • Lower-than-standard (WHO, China, the USA, and Europe) particulate matter increases YLL. • Lower-than-standard particulate matter decreases life expectancy. • A greater impact was found for lower-than-standard particulate matter. Studies have shown that ambient air pollution is associated with obesity in adults, but epidemiological evidence is scarce for children and adolescents. This study sought to examine the association between long-term exposure to ambient air pollution and obesity in a large population of children and adolescents in China. A cross-sectional analysis was performed from a school-based health lifestyles intervention project between September 1, 2019 and November 31, 2019, including 36,456 participants aged 9–17 years in Jiangsu province of China. Exposure to air pollutants (nitrogen dioxide (NO 2), ozone (O 3), particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters ≤10 μm (PM 10), and ≤2.5 μm (PM 2.5)) were measured based on the nearest air monitoring station for each selected school. Data on each participant's weight and height was also recorded. Demographic and obesity-related behavioral information was collected using a self-reported questionnaire. We used the multivariate regression model to estimate the effects of three-year (2016–2018) average concentrations and the exceedance concentration days (ECD) of air pollutants on obesity after adjusting potential confounders. The ECD was defined as daily concentration exceeding the Chinese National Ambient Air Quality Standard and World Health Organization Ambient Air Quality Guidelines. We observed that higher concentrations of PM 2.5 , NO 2 , and O 3 were associated with elevated likelihood of obesity. For each 10 μg/m3 increment in concentration, odds ratio of obesity was 1.185 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.054, 1.333) for PM 2.5 , 1.127 (95%CI: 1.042, 1.219) for NO 2 , and 1.041 (95%CI: 1.001, 1.082) for O 3 , respectively. A significant association between the ECD and obesity was also found for PM 2.5 and O 3. Effects of air pollutants on obesity were stronger in males, low economic level regions, and age subgroups of 9–11 and 15–17 years. Our findings suggest that long-term exposures to PM 2.5 , NO 2 , and O 3 were associated with higher prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents. Short-term exposure to high level of ambient particulate matters (PM) concentrations has been linked with increased hospital admissions (HA) for schizophrenia. However, evidence is inconclusive about the added effect of multi-day exposure to high-level PM concentration on schizophrenia. This study aims to evaluate the durational effect of PM air pollution wave on schizophrenia. Data on daily HA for schizophrenia, PM (PM 2.5 and PM 10) and meteorological variables over the period of 2014–2017 was collected in Jining, Shandong, China. Air pollution wave of PM was defined as ≥2 or ≥3 or ≥4 consecutive days with PM concentration ≥90th or ≥92.5th or ≥95th or ≥97.5th percentiles, respectively. A time-series Poisson regression model with duration as the variable of interest was used to evaluate the associations of PM air pollution wave with HA for schizophrenia. A total of 14650 hospital admissions for schizophrenia were identified. Under various air pollution wave definitions, both PM 2.5 and PM 10 had significant adverse effects on schizophrenia HA. PM 2.5 wave defined as ≥2 consecutive days with concentration ≥90th, ≥92.5th, ≥95th and ≥97.5th percentile was associated with 4.8% (2.0%–7.6%), 4.9% (1.9%–7.9%), 5.5% (2.0%–9.2%), and 7.6% (2.9%–12.6%) increase of HA for schizophrenia at lag 6. PM 2.5 waves defined as ≥3 consecutive days with concentration ≥90th, ≥92.5th, ≥95th and ≥97.5th percentile respectively corresponded to 5.0% (2.3%–7.8%), 5.1% (1.9%–8.4%), 6.9% (3.0%–10.8%) and 12.0% (5.3%–19.1%) increases in HA for schizophrenia at lag 6. The most significant associations were observed on the sixth day in different lag models. Being the first astronomical scientific satellite of China, Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) has been launched on D e c. 17 , 2015. One of scientific objects of DAMPE is studying the acceleration and propagation mechanisms of cosmic rays by measuring the flux of nuclei cosmic rays up to several hundred T e V s. As one of the key detectors of DAMPE, the Plastics Scintillator Detector (PSD) is used for the nuclei identification as well for the photons/electrons separation. After assembly of DAMPE engineering qualified model (EQM), several beam tests were conducted at CERN to study the performance and the reliability of DAMPE. Background: China has the world's largest aging population and the number of empty-nest older adults is on the rise. In comparison to the aging population in general, empty-nest older adults have a lower level of subjective well-being and poorer mental health status due to a lack of emotional support from their children. The aim of this study is to conduct an empirical study to evaluate the efficacy of the 'Path-oriented Psychological Self-help Intervention' (P-oPSI) led by nurses on the mental health of empty-nest older adults in the community, to provide a scientific foundation for improving their quality of life. Methods: A Quasi-Experimental controlled intervention study was conducted from 2015 to 2017. A total of 76 empty-nest older adults from 2 districts were recruited using a convenience sampling and assigned to 2 groups based on their residential communities in the city of Chifeng in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. The wait list control group participated in a mental health lecture to gain knowledge and learn techniques of mental health promotion. The intervention group additionally received 1 month of training in a nurse-led 'P-oPSI' for a month. Both groups were followed-up for 3 months. Mental health status, coping styles, and psychological self-help ability of the participating empty nest older adults were assessed at the baseline, 1 month, and 3-months follow up, respectively. Two-way analysis of variance and a simple effect test were used to analyse the differences of the two groups. Results: The P-oPSI yielded a greater benefit for the mental health status, coping styles, and psychological self-help ability of the participants in the intervention group. Combined with a simple effect test, the scores of the mental health status, positive coping style, and psychological self-help ability of those in the intervention group significantly increased at 1 month after the baseline (F mental health status = 7.59, F positive coping style = 7.24, F psychological self-help ability = 7.07); and the sustainable effect of this program lasted for 3 months after the intervention (F mental health status = 13.24, F positive coping style = 10.42, F psychological self-help ability = 10.45), which reached statistical significance (P < 0.01). Conclusions: The P-oPSI program significantly improved the level of mental health of empty-nest older adults in China. This study investigated the diarrhoea seasonality and its potential drivers as well as potential opportunities for future diarrhoea control and prevention in China. Data on weekly infectious diarrhoea cases in 31 provinces of China from 2005 to 2012, and data on demographic and geographic characteristics, as well as climatic factors, were complied. A cosinor function combined with a Poisson regression was used to calculate the three seasonal parameters of diarrhoea in different provinces. Regression tree analysis was used to identify the predictors of diarrhoea seasonality. Diarrhoea cases in China showed a bimodal distribution. Diarrhoea in children <5 years was more likely to peak in fall-winter seasons, while diarrhoea in persons > = 5 years peaked in summer. Latitude was significantly associated with spatial pattern of diarrhoea seasonality, with peak and trough times occurring earlier at high latitudes (northern areas), and later at low latitudes (southern areas). The annual amplitudes of diarrhoea in persons > = 5 years increased with latitude (r = 0.62, P<0.001). Latitude 27.8° N and 38.65° N were the latitudinal thresholds for diarrhoea seasonality in China. Regional-specific diarrhoea control and prevention strategies may be optimal for China.
