• The fortition is found to be linguistically and socially controlled. • In ESLO 1, men are leading the ongoing change. • In ESLO 2, both gender groups demonstrate fortition. • The fortition may indicate a slow enhancement of a natural rate of occurrence. Based on data extracted from two French sociolinguistic corpora, ESLO 1 (1968–1971) and ESLO 2 (2008–), this article discusses the case of a new linguistic variation and change in French native speech in France: the fortition of the word-initial fricative /ʒ/. In total, 12,276 occurrences of words beginning with /ʒ/ were identified. Mixed-effect logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine both phonological environments (the preceding phonemes and the coronal status of the preceding phonemes) and social factors (the age, gender, and socioeconomic status of the speakers). The results demonstrate that the fortition of the initial /ʒ/ is influenced by both linguistic and social factors. Notably, the initial fortition in this study was an ongoing change led by men in ESLO 1. However, its use has already spread to both gender groups in ESLO 2. From a diachronic perspective, this study suggests that the observed initial fortition is not a reverse deaffrication process but rather a gradual increase in its natural occurrence. Twitter has become a popular means of communication used in a variety of fields. This widely used platform has an impact on the way people express themselves and is changing language usage worldwide at an unprecedented pace. This article investigates the reasons for the use of French–English language mixing among French users on Twitter using a topic analysis approach. This analysis draws on Gumperz's theory of conversational switching. In order to collect tweets at a large scale, the data were collected in R using the rtweet package. A total of nine topic categories were identified and analyzed in this article: entertainment, internet/social media, events/community, politics/news, sports, sex/pornography, innovation/technology, fashion/makeup, and business. This study finds that entertainment is the most frequent topic discussed on Twitter. English words, such as trailer, spoil, and live are found in the data. This study enables a deeper understanding of users' linguistic behavior online, and offers insights into future trends in intercultural and cross-language exchanges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The author of the paper analyses the evidence for the appearance of the word émigré in the French language and the changes of its scope of meaning. Initially, this word referred to a person, mostly an aristocrat, who escaped from France in the times of the French Revolution. With time, the lexeme started to be used to name a person forced to leave their home country oppressed by a military and political force, a defender of freedom that represents various social strata. The change took place mainly as a result of the Polish experience of the end of the 18th century--the Kościuszko Uprising and partitions of Poland. The lexical perturbations were accompanied by a revision of the French people's attitude towards Poland and Poles. The French attention was captured by weirdness of country system and geopolitical situation, but also by devotion, heroism, high ethics, and love for freedom. The essay analyzes French language policy as a probe to set forth different notions of "cultural sovereignty" in France from the end of the 19th century to decolonization. It traces the construction of Francophonie as a political project of the early 3rd Republic that involved statal actors and institutions as well as scholarly and intellectual engagement and an emerging civil society. Although French language policy changed over the years and followed quite different ideas and practices in- and outside the Hexagon it aimed at control, cohesion and cultural sovereignty inside the French nation-state as well as in its colonies. In both cases the different target groups received and appropriated it in diverse and unintended ways. By analyzing the actors, ideas and practices of Francophonie as well as its internal and external facets in the same analytical field the essay tries to bring out the differences and commonalities of French notions of cultural sovereignty between metropole and empire. This article investigates the impact of diachronic determinants on non-standard language use in French rap. This study relies on a lexicographic analysis to produce quantitative results which are then analysed qualitatively with the help of extracts from semi-structured interviews with francophone rappers. The analysis focuses on tracks from different generations of rappers and also a single artist throughout his career, Akhenaton. The initial quantitative results will lead to discussions of the impact of the beginnings of French rap in comparison to the wide acceptance and success of French rap nowadays. The effect of life experiences will also be taken into consideration to observe how much vocabulary can change throughout an individual’s life as he or she goes through various life-changing events. These discussions will be linked to the effects of strong- and weak-ties relationships on language change as well as the impact of increasing fame, changes in social class and the advent of the Internet. This article concludes that the different generations of rappers displayed a marked increase in non-standard language use with time, whereas Akhenaton’s non-standard language use fluctuated much more. The article provides an overview of the field of the study of linguistic regional variation in France. It considers the history of linguistic change, the process of standardization of grammar and language, and the study of diatopic variation. Some notable people discussed include Jules Gilliéron, co-author of the book "Atlas linguistique de la France" published between 1902 and 1910, as well as linguists Albert Dauzat, Fernand Carton, and David Hornsby. Abstract: The purpose of this article is to delimit the role of pragmatic specialisation in the evolution of negation in French. The change in the marking of sentential negation is believed to proceed in characterised stages that would together constitute the Jespersen cycle. As a marker becomes the default expression of negation, the other markers do not necessarily fade away, and are maintained with specialised roles that include pragmatic functions. One such pragmatic function is that of activation (Dryer, 1996), by which a proposition is presented as accessible to the hearer. Activation is shown to motivate the use of preverbal non, which competes with ne for several centuries. The claims that the emergence of postverbal pas in early French and the loss of ne in contemporary spoken French are associated with activation are considered on the basis of novel data. It is concluded that pragmatic functions contribute to language change by providing marked options that may be reanalysed with default status in a grammatical paradigm. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This article examines the views of 'immigrant-background' children on their own linguistic and cultural 'differences' within the different educational contexts of primary classrooms in France and England. With the increase in and changing composition of immigration in Europe, the integration of populations from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds has become a central issue for European societies. Whilst most studies in France and England tend to focus on immigrant children in secondary schools, this study looks at immigrant children at primary level, in an attempt to 'hear their voices' and explore their perceptions and experiences, in a comparative perspective. Findings based on focus group interviews and participant observation in an English and French classroom, suggest that despite contrasting models of integration, the way 'immigrant-background' children mediate 'difference' as part of their identities as pupils present similarities between the two countries. There remain, however, strong differences between the two national classrooms, which could be attributed to the different contexts and approaches to multicultural differences in France and England. The historic presence of Dutch in the region Nord-Pas-de-Calais in the north of France is still strikingly apparent in its place-names and family names. These remnants testify to the long existence of a situation of bilingualism and diglossia in that region. A historic overview teaches us that a millennial retreat of Dutch and its replacement by Picardic and French has nowadays almost come to an end. During the Ancien Régime political borders hardly seem to have played any role in that evolution. But in the last three centuries, since the annexation of French Flanders to France in the second half of the seventeenth century, the linguistic situation of the hinterland of Dunk irk has gradually changed from completely Dutch (Flemish) to almost completely French. Especially in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the state border between France and Belgium has had a growing sociological impact on language use and on the characteristics of the original Flemish dialect on either side of the border. A considerable divergence on the level of the standard language use has caused a secondary divergence in the Flemish dialect, which is now threatened with extinction on the French side of the border.
