Nanotechnologies, notably quantum-dot cellular automata, have achieved world-wide attentions for their prominent features as compared to the conventional CMOS circuitry. Quantum-dot cellular automata, particularly owning to its considerable reduction in size, energy consumption and latency of circuits, is considered as a potential alternative for the CMOS technology. Considering the manufacturing aspects, in this paper, a method is proposed for designing efficient quantum-dot cellular automata circuits. We inspect an alternative approach for streamlined design of quantum-dot cellular automata circuits such that the required external fixed inputs are substantially reduced. In order to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method, the widely used multiplexer, XOR and party generator circuits are considered as case studies. All of the proposed circuits are simulated and verified using QCADesigner which is a valid and popular simulation tool. Cache coherence plays a major role in manycore systems. The verification of deadlocks is a challenge in particular, because deadlock freedom is an emerging property. Formal methods often decouple verification of the protocol from verification of the communication interconnect. Modern communication fabrics, however, become more advanced and include a network topology, routing, arbitration, synchronization, and more. In this paper, an integrated approach is proposed that allows cross-layer verification of both the cache coherence protocol and the communication fabric all at once. An automated methodology for deriving cross-layer invariants is proposed. These invariants relate the state of the application-layer protocols to en route packets in the communication fabric. Using the invariants, we derive formal proofs of deadlock-freedom for two case studies: a directory-based MI protocol in a 2D mesh, and a ring-based snoopy protocol in a 2D torus. Additionally, we show that our methodology can be used to derive the smallest possible queue sizes that ensure absence of deadlocks. Recently, Multiple Valued Logic (MVL) has attracted attention, because it reduces the area and complexity of circuits when compared to binary logic. Carbon nanotube field effect transistors (CNFET) are a good candidate for implementing MVL logic circuits, since determining the threshold voltage value of CNFET is easily achievable by changing the diameter of the nanotubes which are placed under the transistor gate. In this paper, quaternary CNFET based 4–2 and 5–2 compressor cells have been proposed. The proposed cell designs were investigated using HSPICE simulator with the standard 32 nm CNFET technology under different operational conditions such as different temperatures, different load capacitances, and different supply voltages. Also the sensitivity to process variations and noise immunity of the proposed designs have been investigated. 3D ICs can take advantage of a scalable communication platform, commonly referred to as the Networks-on-Chip (NoC). In the basic form of 3D-NoC, all routers are vertically connected. Partially connected 3D-NoC has emerged because of physical limitations of using vertical links. Routing is of great importance in such partially connected architectures. A high-performance, fault-tolerant and adaptive routing strategy with respect to the communication flow among the cores is crucial while freedom from livelock and deadlock has to be guaranteed. In this paper we introduce a new routing algorithm for partially connected 3D-NoCs. The routing algorithm is adaptive and tolerates the faults on vertical links as compared to the predesigned routing algorithms. Our results show a $40-50\%$ improvement in the fraction of intact inter-level communications when the fault tolerant algorithm is used. This paper presents a novel method for design and implementation of three dimensional (3D) two-layer devices with 1/0 logic values. This method uses carbon nanotube (CNT) technology as well as the molecular quantum cellular automata (MQCA) technology on a graphene substrate. The most significant characteristic of the proposed design, which makes the design unique, is the capability of generating functions in 3D; the proposed method would allow implementation of the designs in a single layer which significantly impacts on reducing the chip area and also greatly facilitates the overall synthesis of the design including placement, routing and reducing the critical path length. This paper presents low-power carbon nanotube field-effect transistor (CNTFET)-based quaternary logic circuits. The proposed quaternary circuits are designed based on the CNTFET unique properties, such as the same carrier mobility for N- and P-type devices and also providing desirable threshold voltages by adopting proper diameters for the nanotubes. In addition, no paths exist between supply and ground rails in the steady states of the proposed designs, which eliminates the ON state static current and also the stacking technique is utilised in order to significantly reduce the leakage currents. The results of the simulations, conducted using Synopsys HSPICE with the standard 32 nm CNTFET technology, confirm the significantly lower power consumption, higher energy efficiency and lower sensitivity to process variation of the proposed designs compared to the state-of-the-art quaternary logic circuits. The proposed quaternary logic circuits have on average 92, 99 and 91% less total power, static power and PDP, respectively, compared with the most low-power and energy-efficient CNTFET-based quaternary logic circuits, recently presented in the literature. At our institution, percent tumor burden in prostate core biopsies is quantified using variations of one of two methods. Measurement by the Aggregate method reports only adenocarcinoma and omits intervening stroma and benign prostatic glands while the Discontinuous method includes the intervening stroma and benign glands between distinct foci of adenocarcinoma. In this study, we selected cases with 12-part core biopsies that were followed by a radical prostatectomy within two years. Interestingly, we found that when adenocarcinoma involved prostate 12-part core biopsies and subsequent resection unilaterally, there is no significant difference in absolute percentage of tumor using either measuring method ( P = 0.4). In contrast, when adenocarcinoma involved the biopsies unilaterally and subsequent prostatectomy bilaterally, the two measurement methods had a statistically significant difference in percentage scores ( P = 0.002). In the study cohort, other factors including Gleason score ( P = 0.88) and total number of adenocarcinoma-involved cores ( P = 0.27) did not introduce any significant correlation with bilateral involvement. In this study, we found that biopsies that discontinuously and unilaterally involve half of a prostate are much more likely to involve both lobes than those that are unilateral and present in nodular aggregates. This paper presents a new ternary operator for cyclic redundancy check in ternary logic with high hardware efficiency. It shows the essential properties of a ternary operator for calculating CRC. Gate-level implementation of CRC-16 is exemplified and comprehensively explained in this paper. Transistor-level realizations of the new and the previous operators are also given in full detail. This paper demonstrates that the employment of the proposed operator reduces hardware components such as the elimination of one entire operator in both transmitter and receiver sides in comparison with ternary SUM . In addition, simulation results by HSPICE and 32 nm CNTFET technology shows about 20.6% energy reduction for one of the implementation methods of the proposed operator with respect to the previously presented one ( CCW CYCLE ). This paper deals with the bridge-style circuits. They are highly efficient in terms of transistor density per unit of area. They comply with the conventional CMOS style and form a full-swing and robust structure. First, we clarify the necessary conditions under which a Boolean function can be implemented fully symmetrical. Then, it is demonstrated that it is possible to design out of functions fully symmetrical. Eventually, we show how the pull-up and pull-down networks are constructed in a bridge circuit for any three-input function which fulfils the conditions of being implemented fully symmetrical. As the number of on-chip processor cores increases, power-efficient solutions are sought for data communication between cores. The Helix-h non-blocking photonic switch is developed to improve physical-layer and network performance parameters for a wide range of silicon nano-photonic multicore interconnection topologies. Traffic benchmarks and practical case studies using a cycle-accurate simulation environment indicate significantly reduced insertion loss providing improved bandwidth density and scalability to manycore plurality. Improvements in system performance parameters are quantified for network bandwidth, transmission efficiency, and latency in popular photonic internconnection topologies, in comparison to previous switch designs. For instance, utilizing the Helix-h switch in a mesh topology, the bandwidth is increased by 112 percent compared to the previously highest performing switch design. Execution time and energy efficiency are improved by up to 92 and 99 percent, respectively, for representative multicore applications. TSV-to-TSV coupling is known to be a significant detriment to signal integrity in three-dimensional (3D) IC architectures. Designing a reliable Through-Silicon Via is critical in order to support better performance. This paper explores the challenges brought on by capacitive and inductive TSV-to-TSV coupling in TSV-based 3D ICs. Based on our analyses, we propose two approaches to mitigate these effects. In one approach, a novel coding technique that adjusts the current flow pattern is proposed to mitigate the inductive coupling effects. In another approach an alternative architecture, wrapping around the TSVs, is proposed to greatly reduce the capacitive coupling effect. In this paper energy-efficient multiple valued logic (MVL) circuits based on carbon nanotube field effect transistor (CNTFET) are proposed. These circuits are designed based on the unique properties of CNTFETs, such as having same mobility for electrons and holes and also capability of adopting desirable threshold voltage by adjusting the CNTs diameters. The proposed designs have high driving capability, larger noise margins and higher robustness as compared to the previous CNTFET-based designs. The proposed quaternary circuits are examined using HSPICE simulator with the standard CNTFET technology. Simulation results demonstrate more energy-efficient and robust operation of the proposed designs, as compared to the other state-of-the-art CNTFET-based MVL circuits, recently presented in the literature. According to the simulation results the proposed STNOT, STNAND and STNOR circuits have on average 82%, 76% and 45% lower power-delay product (PDP), respectively as compared to their state-of-the-art counterparts. In addition, the proposed QNOT, QNAND and QNOR circuits have the average PDP improvements of 79%, 42% and 61%, respectively, as compared the other recently presented CNTFET-based quaternary designs. Quantum-dot Cellular Automata (QCA) is an attractive nanoelectronics paradigm which is widely advocated as a possible replacement of conventional CMOS technology. Designing memory cells is a very interesting field of research in QCA domain. In this paper, we are going to propose novel nanotechnology-compatible designs based on the majority gate structures. In the first step, this objective is accomplished by QCA implementation of two well-organized JK flip-flop designs and in the second step; synchronous counters with different sizes are presented as an application. Quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA) exhibits a new paradigm at nanoscale for possible substitution of conventional CMOS technology. Most of the research works in QCA domain have completely ignored the significance of energy consumption constraint in designing circuits. In this study a low complexity and energy-efficient QCA T flip–flip as well as high-performance single-layer synchronous counters are proposed. By cascading the proposed T flip-flop and a suitable level converter, a QCA-compatible structure for falling edge triggered T flip-flop is achieved. This circuit functions as the chief element for constructing synchronous counters. QCADesigner and QCAPro tools are used for evaluating the functionality and calculating dissipated energy of the circuits, respectively. Results indicate the superiority of the proposed circuits in terms of complexity, latency and energy consumption as compared to their state-of-the-art counterparts. The proposed T flip-flop demonstrates 18% leakage energy improvement besides the considerable value of 56% switching energy improvement in 0.5Ek tunneling energy level as compared to the best ones. It is worth mentioning that 41%, 44% and 45% optimizations in the number of cells in addition to 15%, 25% and 33% optimizations in the area are achieved for the proposed mod 4, mod 8 and mod 16 counters, respectively, in comparison with the best previous results. This paper investigates the transmission of an injection-locked optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (ILO-OFDM) scheme over an optical fiber. In the ILO-OFDM system, an optically injection-locked semiconductor laser is utilized to directly modulate the OFDM signal on the optical carrier. With a sufficiently large injection strength and a negative shift of the detuning frequency, the modulation sidebands become asymmetric similar to a single sideband modulation (SSB). The SSB spectrum is advantageous for minimizing the chromatic dispersion-induced power variation. Abstract: 3-D Networks-on-Chip (NoCs) have been proposed as a potent solution to address both the interconnection and design complexity problems facing future System-on-Chip (SoC) designs. In this paper, two topology-aware multicast routing algorithms, Multicasting XYZ (MXYZ) and Alternative XYZ (AL+XYZ) algorithms in supporting of 3-D NoC are proposed. In essence, MXYZ is a simple dimension order multicast routing algorithm that targets 3-D NoC systems built upon regular topologies. To support multicast routing in irregular regions, AL+XYZ can be applied, where an alternative output channel is sought to forward/replicate the packets whenever the output channel determined by MXYZ is not available. To evaluate the performance of MXYZ and AL+XYZ, extensive experiments have been conducted by comparing MXYZ and AL+XYZ against a path-based multicast routing algorithm and an irregular region oriented multiple unicast routing algorithm, respectively. The experimental results confirm that the proposed MXYZ and AL+XYZ schemes, respectively, have lower latency and power consumption than the other two routing algorithms, meriting the two proposed algorithms to be more suitable for supporting multicasting in 3-D NoC systems. Abstract: This paper proposes a novel Network-on-Chip architecture that not only enhances network transmission performance while maintaining a feasible implementation cost, but also provides a power-efficient solution for interconnection network scenarios. Diagonally-linked mesh NoC that uses wormhole packet switching technique implements a high-performance NoC platform to meet both cost and power consumption requirements. The proposed architecture uses an adaptive quasi-minimal routing algorithm so that it can improve average latency and saturation traffic load owing to its flexibility and adaptiveness. Based on these features, a congestion-aware routing algorithm is proposed to balance traffic load so as to alleviate congestion caused by high throughput network activities. Simulation results show that saturation load is improved dramatically for various traffic patterns. Implementation results also show that employing diagonal links is a more area-efficient method for improving network performance than using large buffers. It is shown that congestion-aware router requires negligible cost overhead but provides better throughput. Finally, simulation results also reveal that power consumption in the proposed architecture outperforms traditional mesh networks. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

As computation costs increase to meet design requirements for computation-intensive graphics applications on today's embedded systems, the pressure to develop high-performance parallel processors on a chip will increase. Acceleration of the ray tracing computation has become a major issue as the computer graphics industry demands for rendering realistic images. Network-on-chip (NoC) techniques that interconnect multiple processing elements with routers are the solution for reducing computation time and power consumption by parallel processing on a chip. It is also essential to meet the scalability and complexity challenges for system-on-chip (SoC). In this article, we describe a parallel ray tracing application mapping on a mesh-based multicore NoC architecture. We describe an optimised ray tracing kernel and parallelisation strategies, varying the workload distribution statically and dynamically. In this work, we present results and timing performance of our parallel ray tracing application on a NoC, which are obtained through our cycle accurate multicore NoC simulator. Using a dynamic scheduling load balancing technique, we achieved a maximum speedup multiplier of 35.97 on an 8 × 8 networked processor array using a NoC as the interconnect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents parallel FFT algorithms with different degree of computation and communication overheads for multiprocessors in a Network-on-Chip (NoC) environment. Of the three parallel FFT algorithms presented in this paper, we propose two parallel FFT algorithms for a 2D NoC that can contain a variable number of processing elements (PEs) and one is a reference parallel FFT algorithm for comparison. A parallel FFT algorithm we propose increases performance by assigning well-balanced computation tasks to PEs. The execution times are reduced because the algorithm uses data locality well to avoid unnecessary data exchanges among PEs and removes the overall idle periods by2 a balanced task scheduling. An enhanced version of this algorithm is suggested in which communication traffic is reduced. In this algorithm, returning transformed data to an original PE after one computation stage before sending them to a next PE for the following stage is removed. Instead, we propose a method that enables to keep regularity of the data communication and computations with twiddle factors. According to the simulation result from our cycle-accurate SystemC NoC model with a parametrizable 2-D mesh architecture, and the analysis of the algorithms in time and complexity, our proposed algorithms are shown to outperform the reference parallel FFT algorithm and FFT implementations on TI Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) that have similar specifications to our simulation environment. As the number of integrated IP cores in the current System-on-Chips (SoCs) keeps increasing, communication requirements among cores can not be sufficiently satisfied using either traditional or multi-layer bus architectures because of their poor scalability and bandwidth limitation on a single bus. While new interconnection techniques have been explored to overcome such a limitation, the notion of utilizing Network-on-Chip (NoC) technologies for the future generation of high performance and low power chips for myriad of applications, in particular for wireless communication and multimedia processing, has been of great importance. In order for the NoC technologies to succeed, realistic specifications such as throughput, latency, moderate design complexity, programming model, and design tools are necessary requirements. For this purpose, we have covered some of the key and challenging design issues specific to the NoC architecture such as the router design, network interface (NI) issues, and complete system-level modeling. In this paper, we propose a multi-processor system platform adopting NoC techniques, called NePA (Network-based Processor Array). As a component of system platform, the fundamental NoC techniques including the router architecture and generic NI are defined and implemented adopting low power and clock efficient techniques. Using a high-level cycle-accurate simulation, various parameters relevant to its performance and its systematic modeling are extracted and analyzed. By combining various developed systematic models, we construct the tool chain to pursue hardware/software design tradeoffs necessary for better understanding of the NoC techniques. This paper presents a mapping scheme of an optimized octree-based ray tracing algorithm and its implementation on a SIMD reconfigurable architecture, MorphoSys, with appropriate hardware incorporated. A two-level SIMD mapping scheme for ray tracing is chosen to get better trade-off between coherence exploitation efficiency and bandwidth requirements. We apply a SIMD octree traversal algorithm that supports ray traversals of any origins and directions. Moreover, we have applied the bottom-up traversal order for shadow and reflection rays to avoid unnecessary testing. The memory overhead of the parallel execution of ray tracing in SIMD systems is analyzed to direct memory optimization. Pre-fetching is utilized to hide data fetch latency behind the computation. A Spatial Partitioning Tree buffer reduces the latency due to the interleaved accesses to the shared memory. It also dynamically exploits ray coherence to save memory bandwidth. A Pointer Update Unit and a Pointer Buffer are combined to remove the overhead resulted from pointer-calculations and stack pushes during the parallel depth-first-traversal process. The associated hardware cost is less than 2% of the whole system. In order to include diffuse effects into the output, we apply spherical harmonic. Post-synthesis simulation shows that the target chip is estimated to be 33 mm2 and consumes less than 1 W in the worst case. • A digital fuzzy approach for image edge detection is proposed. • This method employs simple fuzzy rules for digital image edge detection. • Simple logic gates based on carbon nanotube transistor are used for implementation. • Delay and power are significantly reduced while a reasonable accuracy is provided. This study presents a novel digital fuzzy approach for image edge detection based on carbon nanotube field effect transistor (CNTFET). The proposed design employs a simple fuzzy rule for digital image edge detection. To investigate the functionality and performance of the proposed fuzzy approach, our results are compared with the MATLAB edge detection operators such as Sobel, Canny, and Prewitt. Based on the simulation results, we demonstrate that the proposed fuzzy approach can be implemented through nanoscale logic gates and provide a reasonable accuracy. The core element of the proposed fuzzy system, implemented with CNTFETs, occupies 0.22 µm2 layout area and consumes 535 nW power consumption. This paper presents a novel fully programmable membership function generator (MFG) based on carbon nanotube field effect transistors (CNTFETs). The proposed CNTFET-based MFG has full control over the output characteristics such as height, and position independently. The proposed design can produce four different membership functions only by calibrating the external control bias voltages. Moreover, two peripheral transmission gates are utilized to provide controllability over the slope of the generated membership functions in a wide range. The primary advantage of the proposed MFG compared to its counterparts is the ability to control the slope of the resulted membership functions entirely and separately using only two external bias voltages without the need for changing the device physical dimensions. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed design improves the power, delay, and layout area, on average by, 72%, 55%, and 33% as compared to the previous designs. Furthermore, the proposed MFG shows only 2.13% RMS error, and 5.65% maximum absolute error for the generated Gaussian trapezoidal membership function as compared to the ideal form. Our results certify that the proposed CNTFET-based MFG has the potential to be used as a promising platform for fuzzy inference systems in deep nanoscale technology nodes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
