The number of patients with osteoporosis is increasing worldwide, and a decrease in bone mass is a main risk factor for fracture. The prevention of bone loss is critical for improving the quality of life for patients. However, the long-term use of antiosteoporotic agents is limited due to their side effects. Barley has been traditionally ingested for thousands of years as a safe, natural food with pharmaceutical properties, and its seedling can enhance the biological activity of the medicinal components found in food. This study aimed to clarify the antiresorptive activity of barley seedling and its mode of action. Barley seedling extracts (BSE) dose-dependently inhibited RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation with alteration of IκB degradation, c-Fos, and NFATc1 molecules in the early-to-middle stages of osteoclastogenesis. In the late phase of osteoclastogenesis, BSE also prevented DC-STAMP and cathepsin K, which are required for cell fusion and bone degradation, such as osteoclast function. In conclusion, barley seedling from natural foods may provide long-term safety and be useful for the prevention or treatment of osteoclast-mediated bone metabolic diseases, including osteoporosis. Conclusion: Middle fossa approach (MFA) shows a hearing preservation rate of 86% and facial nerve function was preserved with HB grade I or II in 93%. MFA is a good treatment option for intra-canalicular vestibular schwannomas when surgical excision is needed. Background: Surgical outcomes of vestibular schwannoma have progressively improved with the advancement of microsurgical instruments. MFA is known to have better chances to preserve hearing, while it has limited access to the posterior fossa, limitation of tumor size, and higher risk of post-operative facial nerve weakness. Objectives: To investigate surgical outcomes and clinical efficiency of MFA in vestibular schwannoma. Methods: A retrospective study was done in 14 patients who underwent MFA for vestibular schwannoma in Asan Medical Center. Results: The median age at diagnosis was 46.3 years. At initial presentation, 57% of the patients had vertigo, 43% hearing disturbance, and 64% tinnitus. The mean tumor size was 9.7 mm. The tumors were completely resected in 86% of the patients. Hearing was post-operatively preserved in 12 patients and two patients lost their hearing following surgery. Facial nerve function post-operatively remained unchanged in 12 patients (86%). Newcastle disease virus (NDV) causes a devastating poultry disease worldwide. Frequent outbreaks of NDV in chickens vaccinated with conventional live vaccines suggest a need to develop new vaccines that are genetically matched against circulating NDV strains, such as the genotype V virulent strains currently circulating in Mexico and Central America. In this study, a reverse genetics system was developed for the virulent NDV strain Mexico/01/10 strain and used to generate highly attenuated vaccine candidates by individually modifying the cleavage site sequence of fusion (F) protein. The cleavage site sequence of parental virus was individually changed to those of the avirulent NDV strain LaSota and other serotypes of avian paramyxoviruses (APMV serotype-2, -3, -4, -6, -7, -8, and -9). In general, these mutations affected cell-to-cell fusion activity in vitro and the efficiency of the F protein cleavage and made recombinant Mexico/01/10 (rMex) virus highly attenuated in chickens. When chickens were immunized with the rMex mutant viruses and challenged with the virulent parent virus, there was reduced challenge virus shedding compared to birds immunized with the heterologous vaccine strain LaSota. Among the vaccine candidates, rMex containing the cleavage site sequence of APMV-2 induced the highest neutralizing antibody titer and completely protected chickens from challenge virus shedding. These results show the role of the F protein cleavage site sequence of each APMV type in generating genotype V-matched vaccines and the efficacy of matched vaccine strains to provide better protection against NDV strains currently circulating in Mexico. Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the bond strengths of one-step self-etch adhesives applied to primary tooth dentin with and without additional acid etching. Materials and Methods In total, 154 specimens were prepared using 50 naturally exfoliated primary molars. Four commercial one-step self-etch adhesives were used in this study: Scotchbond™ Universal, All-Bond Universal™, Adper™ Prompt™ L-Pop™, and Clearfil S3 Bond™. Two etch-and-rinse adhesives, Prime & Bond® NT™ and Scotchbond™ Multi-Purpose, served as controls. Microtensile bond strength tests were performed for specimens treated with the one-step self-etch adhesives with and without additional acid etching and those treated with the two etch-and-rinse adhesives. Results All one-step self-etch adhesives except Adper Prompt L-Pop exhibited increased microtensile bond strength values ( p < 0.05) with additional acid etching. A nonsignificant interaction was observed between the type of self-etch adhesive and additional acid etching ( p = 0.056). Bond strength comparisons between the self-etch adhesives used without additional acid etching and the etch-and-rinse adhesives revealed significantly higher values for Prime & Bond NT than for All-Bond Universal® ( p < 0.05). However, there were no significant differences between any etch-and-rinse adhesive and self-etch adhesive used with additional acid etching, although Clearfil S3 Bond showed greater strength than Adper Prompt L-Pop. Conclusions Our results suggest that additional acid etching increases the bond strength of most one-step self-etch adhesives applied to primary tooth dentin. Avian influenza (AI) is an economically-important disease of poultry worldwide. The use of vaccines to control AI has increased because of frequent outbreaks of the disease in endemic countries. Newcastle disease virus (NDV) vectored vaccine has shown to be effective in protecting chickens against a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) infection. However, preexisting antibodies to NDV vector might affect protective efficacy of the vaccine in the field. As an alternative strategy, we evaluated vaccine efficacy of a chimeric NDV vectored vaccine in which the ectodomains of F and HN proteins were replaced by those of avian paramyxovirus serotype-2. The chimeric NDV vector stably expressed the HA protein in vivo , did not cross-react with NDV, was attenuated to be used as a safe vaccine, and provided a partial protection of 1-day-old immunized chickens against HPAIV subtype H5N1challenge, indicating its potential use for early protection of chickens. Background Posttreatment detection of recurrence may lead to salvage treatment and prognostic prediction in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). We evaluated the diagnostic and prognostic values of 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose ( 18 F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) after definitive treatment of HNSCC. Methods This prospective study included 278 consecutive patients who underwent curative surgery ( n = 143, 51.4%) or definitive radiotherapy/chemoradiotherapy ( n = 135, 48.6%) for previously untreated HNSCC. The patients were regularly followed up and evaluated by 18 F-FDG PET/CT, head and neck CT/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and chest CT at regular intervals after treatment. The imaging interpretations were compared with the histological results for recurrence. Receiver operating characteristics curves analysis, McNemar's test and logistic regression using generalised estimating equations were used to compare the diagnostic accuracy of 18 F-FDG PET/CT and standard imaging of CT/MRI or chest CT, and a Cox proportional hazards model was used to assess the prognostic value of PET/CT. Results During a median follow-up of 44 months (range, 24–62 months), 73 patients (26.3%) had recurrence or persistent diseases. The area under curves for 18 F-FDG PET/CT and CT/MRI were 0.975 (0.964–0.992) and 0.789 (0.713–0.874), respectively ( P < 0.001). 18 F-FDG PET/CT detected 65 of 66 recurrences (98.5%) not suggested by physical examination and endoscopy. Positive findings on 18 F-FDG PET/CT scans were independent predictors of poorer cancer-specific and overall survival outcomes ( P < 0.01). Hypersegmentation of nuclei is considered a distinct characteristic of the antitumoral phenotype of neutrophils. Retinoic acid, a metabolite of retinol, reorganizes and induces segmentation of the nucleus during the differentiation of neutrophils. However, the role of retinoic acid in the phenotype polarization of neutrophils has not been fully established. Here, we investigated the effect of retinoic acid on phenotype polarization of neutrophils. Retinoic acid-induced the hypersegmentation of human neutrophils via retinoic acid receptors and mTOR pathways. Retinoic acid-induced hypersegmented neutrophils enhanced neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) formation in response to phorbol-12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) and fMLP (N-Formylmethionine-leucyl-phenylalanine) stimulation, and increased cytotoxicity against various tumor cells. Moreover, retinoic acid treatment attenuated tumor growth in a murine model of tumor. Background and Aim It can be difficult to identify the cause of an enlarged ampulla of Vater (AOV). This study evaluated the accuracy of wire-guided intraduodenal ultrasonography (US) for the differential diagnosis of an enlarged AOV during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Patients and Methods Thirty-four patients with enlarged AOVs of unknown cause identified on imaging studies or endoscopic observations underwent wire-guided intraduodenal US using a catheter probe. Results The final diagnoses were malignant or premalignant tumors in 10 patients (29.4%), stones in nine patients (26.5%), inflammation in 14 patients (41.2%), and cyst in one patient (2.9%). The overall diagnostic accuracy of intraduodenal US for enlarged AOVs was 91.2%. The diagnostic accuracies of stones, inflammation, and AOV tumors were 100.0%, 94.1%, and 91.1%, respectively. Conclusions Wire-guided intraduodenal US using a catheter probe is readily applicable during ERCP and may be useful in the differential diagnosis of enlarged ampullary lesions. Objective: To assess blood cadmium levels in Korean adolescents with respect to demographic and lifestyle factors.Methods: We analyzed data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2010 to 2013, totaling 1472 adolescents aged 10-18 years. Geometric means of blood cadmium were calculated using a complex samples general linear model to compare blood levels in different demographic and lifestyle groups. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were also used to find predictors for high blood cadmium (>90th percentile).Results: The geometric mean of the blood cadmium concentrations was 0.30μg/L in Korean adolescents. Older age, type of housing (multifamily house and commercial building), smoking and alcohol consumption, and iron deficiency/iron deficiency anemia (IDA) were significantly associated with higher blood cadmium concentrations (P<0.05). Blood cadmium concentrations were not significantly affected by gender, region, body mass index status, or household income. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, independent predictors for higher blood cadmium levels included current smoker (OR=7.77), alcohol consumption (OR=4.31), living in a multifamily house or commercial building (OR=3.11-3.46), and IDA (OR=2.64).Conclusions: Possible associations between blood cadmium levels and type of housing or alcohol consumption in adolescents are suggested for the first time in this study. The purpose of this study was to identify the differences in suicide risk, meaning in life, and need for life respect among three age groups (young adults, the middle aged, and the elderly) of 540 public hospital outpatients in South Korea. This was a cross-sectional study. Among these 3 age groups, we observed significant differences in suicide risk, meaning in life, and need for life respect according to education level, marital status, living arrangements, type of disease, gender, and monthly income. Purpose The aim of this study was to identify the physiological, psychological, and situational factors affecting fatigue among mothers of hospitalized children. Design and Methods This study used a cross-sectional descriptive design with a self-report questionnaire. Participants were 211 mothers with children younger than 6 years old who were admitted to general hospitals. Based on the theory of unpleasant symptoms, the physiological, psychological, and situational factors were tested using structural equation modeling. Results Mothers' fatigue was influenced by physiological ( β = .24), situational, and psychological factors ( β = .17), and situational ( β = .37) factors such as the mother's sleeping hours, the child's adaptation to hospitalization, anxiety and having support with their housework. These three factors explained 31.34% of the variance in fatigue. In particular, it was found that the psychological factors exacerbate the negative influence of the situational factors on fatigue. Moreover, the situational factors were most strongly related to mothers' fatigue, and they had an indirect effect via the psychological factors as a mediator. Practice Implications It is necessary to implement a nursing intervention that targets the controllable factors such as anxiety and children's adaptation to hospitalization that were identified in this study. Aim: The purpose of this study was to develop an educational program to promote healthy life behaviors and to evaluate its potential effects on the health practices of fifth grade elementary school children. Methods: The program, which consisted of six categories (daily life and health, disease prevention and management, prevention of drug misuse and overuse, sexuality and health, mental health, and injury prevention and first aid), was developed based on the ADDIE model. A pretest–post‐test, one‐group, quasi‐experimental design was used with 85 elementary school students who voluntarily participated in the program. Results: A school‐based educational program, called the “Six Kid Keys,” referring to the six categories of healthy life behaviors, was developed. Significant pre–post differences in two of the six healthy life behavior categories (disease prevention and management, injury prevention and first aid) were found. Conclusion: A school‐based intervention that was aimed at changing habits related to healthy life behaviors could be effective for elementary school children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cyanobacteria-derived biofuels can be helpful in achieving a circular bioeconomy. To increase the production of biodiesel/bioethanol from cyanobacterium, Pseudanabaena mucicola GO0704, mixotrophic cultivation using volatile fatty acid (VFA), a cheap organic carbon source, was performed. The treatment of butyric acid or acetic acid enhanced the cell growth, particularly, the dry weight of the butyric acid-treated cells was 2.30-fold higher than the control. The enhancement of the growth led to the increase of metabolite (i.e., lipid and carbohydrate) productions, resulting in high amount of biodiesel and bioethanol to be produced. Butyric acid was more effective compared to acetic acid and the productions of biodiesel (52.2 mg/L) and bioethanol (132.6 mg/L) from the butyric acid-treated P. mucicola GO0704 were 2.34- and 2.17-fold higher compared to the control, respectively. Background: This study investigated on bacterial contamination of the rhinoplasty field. The effect of preoperative chlorhexidine treatment on decreasing bacterial contamination in the rhinoplasty field is examined. Methods: Thirty patients who underwent rhinoplasty were block randomized into a chlorhexidine, regular-soap, or control group comprising ten participants each. The chlorhexidine group was subjected to chlorhexidine showering, shampooing, and facial-cleansing 12 h prior to the operation. The regular-soap group was subjected to cleansing with regular soap, and the control group did not have any skin pretreatment. Bacterial cultures were done 12 h preoperatively from nasal cavity and perinasal skin, immediately preoperatively from perinasal skin and at 1 and 2 h intraoperatively from operation field. Culture results were compared between the three groups, according to operation time, or whether infection-prone procedure was performed. Results: The bacterial species and colony-forming unit numbers at preoperative nasal cavity and perinasal skin were similar. In all three groups, Coagulase- negative staphylococcus was the most common bacteria found in the rhinoplasty field. The numbers of Staphylococcus aureus and Corynebacterium decreased rapidly after preoperative chlorhexidine treatment. The infection-prone procedure was associated with increased bacterial numbers over time during the operation. In all three groups, there was no postoperative infection in a follow-up period of 6 months. Conclusion: Rhinoplasty is confirmed as a clean contaminated operation with skin flora consistently found in the operation field. Chlorhexidine pretreatment in rhinoplasty patients has a tendency to decrease the numbers of Staphylococcus aureus and Corynebacterium on the perinasal skin. Objective: To evaluate the predictive value of separate and combined tests using cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA), cell-free total DNA (cfDNA), and biochemical markers for the early detection of pregnancies with hypertensive disorders.Methods: A nested case-control study was conducted with 135 singleton pregnancies including 17 gestational hypertension cases, 34 preeclampsia (PE) cases, and 84 controls. We performed real-time quantitative PCR to measure levels of DSCR3 and RASSF1A as cffDNA markers and HYP2 as a cfDNA marker in the first and early second trimesters. Levels of pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A), α-fetoprotein, β-human chorionic gonadotropin, unconjugated estriol, and inhibin A were also determined.Results: Compared with controls, the median levels and multiples of the median (MoM) values of HYP2 were significantly higher in the PE and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) groups at 6-14 and 15-23 weeks. Frist-trimester PAPP-A MoM was significantly lower in PE and HDP than in controls. For PE and HDP, the best model included the first-trimester DSCR3, HYP2, and PAPP-A MoM values achieving detection rates of 67 and 58% at a fixed 10% false-positive rate, respectively [area under the receiver operating characteristic curve 0.832 (95% CI 0.689-0.928) for PE; 0.751 (0.607-0.863) for HDP].Discussion: The study demonstrates the potential utility of combined first-trimester cffDNA, cfDNA, and PAPP-A for the early prediction of PE. Objective: To estimate the percentage of infants with large birth size attributable to excess gestational weight gain (GWG), independent of prepregnancy body mass index, among mothers with preexisting diabetes mellitus (PDM).Study Design: We analyzed 2004-2008 Florida linked birth certificate and maternal hospital discharge data of live, term (37-41weeks) singleton deliveries (N=641,857). We calculated prevalence of large-for-gestational age (LGA) (birth weight-for-gestational age≥90th percentile) and macrosomia (birth weight>4500g) by GWG categories (inadequate, appropriate, or excess). We used multivariable logistic regression to estimate the relative risk (RR) of large birth size associated with excess compared to appropriate GWG among mothers with PDM. We then estimated the population attributable fraction (PAF) of large birth size due to excess GWG among mothers with PDM (n=4427).Results: Regardless of diabetes status, half of mothers (51.2%) gained weight in excess of recommendations. Large birth size was higher in infants of mothers with PDM than in infants of mothers without diabetes (28.8% versus 9.4% for LGA, 5.8% versus 0.9% for macrosomia). Among women with PDM, the adjusted RR of having an LGA infant was 1.7 (95% CI 1.5, 1.9) for women with excess GWG compared to those with appropriate gain; the PAF was 27.7% (95% CI 22.0, 33.3). For macrosomia, the adjusted RR associated with excess GWG was 2.1 (95% CI 1.5, 2.9) and the PAF was 38.6% (95% CI 24.9, 52.4).Conclusion: Preventing excess GWG may avert over one-third of macrosomic term infants of mothers with PDM. Background The study aim was to evaluate the correlation of sexual dimorphism and pubertal stage with steroid metabolism in adolescents. Methods The serum levels of cholesterol, pregnenolone, and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and their sulfate conjugates were quantitatively profiled from serum samples of 199 adolescents (87 boys and 112 girls), aged 6 to 14 years. Results In the prepubertal stage, DHEA levels in girls were higher than those in boys; however, significantly increased DHEA levels during pubertal development in boys. Pregnenolone levels were significantly higher in girls; however, the levels of its sulfate were higher in boys. The serum levels of both cholesterol and its sulfate were higher in boys, especially in the early to mid-pubertal stages. DHEA and DHEA sulfate levels in both sexes significantly increased with pubertal development ( P for trend < 0.05), while pregnenolone, cholesterol, and cholesterol sulfate in both sexes were stable. The metabolic ratios, indicating sulfotransferase activity, were significantly higher in boys, and increased with pubertal development in boys, but not in girls, while CYP11A1 activity levels increased significantly in both sexes with pubertal development. Conclusions Sexual dimorphism in key enzymes of androgen biosynthesis during pubertal changes may help elucidate the normal physiology of steroidogenesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Free and conjugated steroids coexist in a dynamic equilibrium due to complex biosynthetic and metabolic processes. This may have clinical significance related to various physiological conditions, including sex development involving the reproductive system. Therefore, we performed quantitative profiling of 16 serum steroids conjugated with glucuronic and sulfuric acids using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC–MS). All steroid conjugates were purified by solid-phase extraction and then separated through a 3-μm particle size C18 column (150 mm × 2.1 mm) at a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min in the negative ionization mode. The LC–MS-based analysis was found to be linear ( r 2 > 0.99), and all steroid conjugates had a limit-of-quantification (LOQ) of 10 ng/mL, except for cholesterol sulfate and 17β-estradiol-3,17-disulfate (20 ng/mL). The extraction recoveries of all steroid conjugates ranged from 97.9% to 110.7%, while the overall precision (% CV) and accuracy (% bias) ranged from 4.8% to 10.9% and from 94.4% to 112.9% at four different concentrations, respectively. Profiling of steroid conjugates corrected by adiposity revealed decreased levels of steroid sulfates ( P < 0.01) in overweight and obese girls compared to normal girls. The suggested technique can be used for evaluating metabolic changes in steroid conjugates and for understanding the pathophysiology and relative contributions of adiposity in childhood obesity. Family influence is a key factor in career development and considerably more so in some cultures than others. Assessing the extent to which family plays a role in college students’ career development within collectivistic cultures may thus significantly contribute to the extant literature by offering varying perspectives on the relationships between familial influence, career preparation satisfaction, and life satisfaction. The present study examined the cultural validity of the Family Influence Scale (FIS) through a sample of 420 South Korean college students. The FIS was then used in a test of family influence as the main distal contextual factor in the Social Cognitive Career Theory—Life Satisfaction Model. Overall, results supported the cultural validity of FIS and also the hypothesized model. Family informational support, family expectations, family financial support, career decision-making self-efficacy, expectancy of outcome, career preparation behavior, and career preparation satisfaction were each found to significantly relate to life satisfaction, accounting for 57% of the variance. Understanding the cytotoxic mechanisms of environmental contaminants is important to estimate their environmental impacts and prepare guidelines for pollution control. Many studies have assessed the cytotoxic mechanisms of graphene oxide (GO), an emerging aquatic contaminant. However, in many cases, the effect of GO size and putative trophic modes of microalgae on cytotoxicity has been neglected, hindering complete understanding of the cytotoxic mechanisms of GO. In this study, the microalga Euglena gracilis cultivated under light (phototrophic) or dark (heterotrophic) conditions was exposed to two sizes of GO [nano-sized (N) and micro-sized (M)] for assessing the effect of GO on microalgal growth. The cytotoxic effect of GO was higher under phototrophic conditions than under heterotrophic conditions, suggesting that a major cytotoxic mechanism of GO is related to photosynthetic activity inhibition. Moreover, N-GO showed higher toxicity than M-GO. The morphological and physiological changes in N-GO- and M-GO-exposed E. gracilis were assessed to further elucidate the cytotoxic mechanisms. N-GO internalized the cells via endocytic activity/piercing, whereas M-GO partially attached to the cell surface and did not enter the cells. Moreover, N-GO and M-GO negatively affected the cells by inducing oxidative stress; the oxidative stress parameters were higher in N-GO-exposed cells than in M-GO-exposed cells. Photonic microspheres containing colloidal arrays are useful as structural colorants in inks and cosmetics. However, low color saturation and low deformability of the microspheres restrict the uses. To overcome the limitations, elastic photonic shells with enhanced color saturation and high deformability using water‐in‐oil‐in‐water (W/O/W) double‐emulsion templates are designed. The elastic shells are produced by photocuring acrylate‐based resin containing non‐close‐packed arrays of silica particles in the middle oil layer. The presence of two concentric interfaces and water‐soluble molecules in the inner and continuous water phases at high concentrations improve the crystalline order of silica particles. In addition, the absence of a relatively disordered core reduces incoherent random scattering, thereby enhancing color saturation. Although the shells themselves are elastically deformable, the liquid core renders them significantly more deformable with small stiffness and negligible hysteresis, which is potentially beneficial for improving the fluidity of suspensions. Moreover, the structural colors of the elastic shells are post‐tunable by osmotic inflation of the semipermeable shells in hypotonic conditions. The high color saturation and high deformability as well as color tunability will provide a new opportunity for structural coloration with the elastic photonic shells as a colorant in inks and cosmetics. Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the corresponding lockdown have drastically changed our lives and led to high psychological distress and mental health problems. This study examined whether psychological factors such as loneliness, perfectionism, and health anxiety are associated with COVID-19 related anxiety and depression during the pandemic in young Korean adults, after controlling for various socio-demographic factors and early life stress. Methods: A total of 189 participants (58.2% women) completed a cross-sectional online survey including the Fear of COVID-19 Scale, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, 3-item Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale, Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, and Whiteley Index-6. Hierarchical linear regression analyses with three blocks were employed to identify the factors that contributed to COVID-19 related anxiety and depressive symptoms. Results: Hierarchical regression analyses showed that higher health anxiety was significantly associated with more severe COVID-19 related anxiety (standardized regression coefficient, β = 0.599, p < 0.001). Additionally, higher levels of loneliness (β = 0.482, p < 0.001), perfectionism (β = 0.124, p = 0.035), and health anxiety (β = 0.228, p < 0.001) were significantly associated with higher depression scores. The three psychological factors explained 32.8% of the total variance in depressive symptom scores, after taking all covariates into account. Conclusion: The results showed that health anxiety was a risk factor for both COVID-19 related anxiety and depression in young adults. Loneliness was the strongest predictor of depressive symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. These findings highlight the importance of identifying vulnerable individuals and encouraging psychological counselling and social connections to reduce the burden of psychiatric disorders during the pandemic. For a high level of productivity, multiple membrane tubes are placed in a CMR, which can lead to the problem of concentration and temperature gradients. This study explores the idea of placing baffles inside the CMR, which is called baffled membrane reactor (BMR). Representative CMR and BMR are compared using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. First, the CFD model of a single-tube CMR is validated with the published experimental data. The results for a 4-tube CMR and BMR (with 14-baffles) reveal that the baffles lead to complex flow patterns, regions with elevated pressure, reduced concentration gradients and reduced temperature drops. The BMR's performance is less sensitive to an increase in gas hourly space velocity than that of the CMR. This study identified the effects of a community-based cardiovascular disease prevention program (CVD-PP) on health behavior and modifiable cardiovascular risk factors in low-income Korean elderly with hypertension. Eighty-eight individuals completed the 3-month self-efficacy-enhancing interventions in which the control group received standard care. In the intervention group, there were statistically significant improvements in self-efficacy (t = 2.519,p = 0.016) and health behavior (t = 3.453,p = 0.001), and significant differences in diastolic blood pressure (t = –2.518,p = 0.018) between the two groups. Objective Auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) is a hearing disorder with impaired signal transmission from the inner ear to the brain. The electrophysiological characteristics of auditory neuropathy (AN characteristics) are marked with presence of otoacoustic emissions (OAE) or cochlear microphonics (CM) in the absence of auditory brainstem response (ABR). This study aimed to review etiologies related to AN characteristics from infants with profound hearing loss (HL), either unilaterally or bilaterally. Study design Prospective cohort study for thirty infants with prelingual profound HL. Methods ABR, OAE, and/or CM were analyzed to identify electrophysiological characteristics. Temporal bone computed tomography and/or internal acoustic canal magnetic resonance imaging were reviewed to identify anatomical abnormalities. The electrophysiological characteristics and cochlear nerve status were analyzed according to the laterality of deafness (unilateral vs bilateral). Results Among the total 41 ears (from 30 infants) with profound HL, 13 ears (7 (36.8%) of 19 ears with unilateral HL and 6 (27.3%) of 22 ears associated with bilateral HL) showed AN characteristics (37.1%), and 21 ears showed cochlear nerve deficiency (CND) (51.2%). AN characteristics was detected about two times more frequently in cases with CND (38.1%) than with anatomically normal cochlear nerve (20.0%), the difference not reaching a statistical significance probably due to a small sample size. Detection of AN characteristics did not differ between unilateral and bilateral profound HL, even though presence of CND was more frequently detected in cases with unilateral profound HL than with bilateral cases. There were at least five types of etiologies related to AN characteristics in 13 ears (from 10 infants) in our series depending on the laterality of deafness and presence of CND. Conclusions This study demonstrates that there were diverse etiologies related to AN characteristics from infants with unilateral or bilateral profound HL. Objective: Although vascular pulsatile tinnitus (VPT) has been classified as “objective”, VPT is not easily recognizable or documentable in most cases. In response to this, we have developed transcanal sound recording (TSR) and spectro-temporal analysis (STA) for the objective diagnosis of VPT. By refining our initial method, we were able to apply TSR/STA to post-treatment outcome evaluation, as well as pre-treatment objective diagnosis. Methods: TSR was performed on seven VPT patients and five normal controls before and after surgical or interventional treatment. VPT was recorded using an inserted microphone with the subjects placed in both upright and supine positions with 1) a neutral head position, 2) head rotated to the tinnitus side, 3) head rotated to the non-tinnitus side, and 4) a neutral position with ipsi-lesional manual cervical compression. The recorded signals were analyzed in both time and time-frequency domains by performing a short-time Fourier transformation. Results: The pre-treatment ear canal signals of all VPT patients demonstrated pulse-synchronous periodic structures and acoustic characteristics that were representative of their presumptive vascular pathologies, whereas those the controls exhibited smaller peaks and weak periodicities. Compared with the pre-treatment signals, the post-treatment signals exhibited significantly reduced peak- and root mean square amplitudes upon time domain analysis. Additionally, further sub-band analysis confirmed that the pulse-synchronous signal of all subjects was not identifiable after treatment and, in particular, that the signal decrement was statistically significant at low frequencies. Moreover, the post-treatment signals of the VPT subjects revealed no significant differences when compared to those of the control group. Conclusion: We reconfirmed that the TSR/STA method is an effective modality to objectify VPT. In addition, the potential role of the TSR/STA method in the objective evaluation of treatment outcomes in patients with VPT was proven. This study determines the effect of simulation with team-based learning ( TBL) on newborn nursing care. This randomized controlled trial included 74 nursing students from one university located in Seoul, South Korea. Participants were categorized into two groups according to educational modality: one group involved both simulation and TBL, and the other involved simulation alone. Learning attitudes , academic achievement, and simulation performance were examined to assess effectiveness. The mean difference in learning attitudes between the two groups was non-significant. Low academic achievement differed significantly between the two groups (t = 3.445, P = 0.002). There was no significant difference in mean scores for simulation performance between the two groups. In this study, simulation with TBL was effective in improving learning outcomes. Nanoparticles (NPs) are increasingly being used, and they present the risk of being introduced into food webs. Numerous studies have been conducted to evaluate the toxicological effects of NPs in the aquatic and freshwater environments and their transfer to upper-level trophic organisms. However, information on the transfer and consequent effects of NPs on soil invertebrates is still limited. In this study, we assessed the transfer of quantum dots (QDs) through a three-species terrestrial food chain that consisted of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae , the collembolan Folsomia candida , and the pill bug Armadillidium vulgare , as well as their biodistribution in vital organs using fluorescence analytical techniques. To visualize QD incorporation and biodistribution in F. candida , longitudinal and transversal sections were observed after short-term (3 d) and long-term (12 d) feeding with QD-treated yeast. QDs were located only in the intestine of F. candida and excreted within 1–2 d. QDs were also transferred to the pill bug by feeding, and remained in its intestine. The potential use of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) in personalized regenerative medicine applications may be augmented by transgenics, including the expression of constitutive cell labels, differentiation reporters, or modulators of disease phenotypes. Thus, there is precedence for reproducible transgene expression amongst iPSC sub-clones with isogenic or diverse genetic backgrounds. Using virus or transposon vectors, transgene integration sites and copy numbers are difficult to control, and nearly impossible to reproduce across multiple cell lines. Moreover, randomly integrated transgenes are often subject to pleiotropic position effects as a consequence of epigenetic changes inherent in differentiation, undermining applications in iPSCs. To address this, we have adapted popular TALEN and CRISPR/Cas9 nuclease technologies in order to introduce transgenes into pre-defined loci and overcome random position effects. AAVS1 is an exemplary locus within the PPP1R12C gene that permits robust expression of CAG promoter-driven transgenes. Gene targeting controls transgene copy number such that reporter expression patterns are reproducible and scalable by ∼2-fold. Furthermore, gene expression is maintained during long-term human iPSC culture and in vitro differentiation along multiple lineages. Demilitarization of waste explosives on a commercial scale has become an important issue in many countries, and this has created a need for research in this area. TNT, RDX and Composition B have been used as military explosives, and they are very sensitive to thermal shock. For the safe waste treatment of these high-energy and highly sensitive explosives, the most plausible candidate suggested has been thermal decomposition in a rotary kiln. This research examines the safe treatment of waste TNT, RDX and Composition B in a rotary kiln type incinerator with regard to suitable operating conditions. Thermal decomposition in this study includes melting, 3 condensed phase reactions in the liquid phase and 263 gas phase reactions. Rigorous mathematical modeling and dynamic simulation for thermal decomposition were carried out for analysis of dynamic behavior in the reactor. The results showed time transient changes of the temperature, components and mass of the explosives and comparisons were made for the 3 explosives. Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of a urinary tubular marker, liver-type fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP) and an inflammatory marker, serum/urinary YKL-40, with albuminuria in patients with childhood-onset type 1 diabetes (T1D). Methods: Twenty-nine patients with childhood-onset T1D and 32 controls were enrolled. Serum and urinary concentrations of YKL-40 and urinary concentrations of L-FABP were measured. Results: The serum levels of YKL-40 were not significantly different between the control group and the patient groups. However, the levels of urinary YKL-40/creatinine (Cr) were higher in the patients, even those with normoalbuminuria than in the controls ( p < 0.001). The levels of urinary L-FABP/Cr were not different between the control group and the patient groups. However, the level of urinary L-FABP/Cr in the microalbuminuria group was higher than that in the normoalbuminuria group ( p = 0.03). There were no associations between the levels of urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio and urinary L-FABP/Cr or YKL-40/Cr. However, the urinary L-FABP/Cr level was significantly correlated with the hemoglobin A1C level ( p = 0.005) and the urinary YKL-40/Cr level ( p = 0.043). Conclusions: Urinary L-FABP/Cr and YKL-40/Cr may reflect renal injury in early stages of nephropathy in patients with childhood-onset T1D, even in the normoalbuminuric state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the new conjugated polymers using dihydroindeno[2,1- a]indene moiety ( ININE), electron-pushing unit with high planarity, for the organic solar cells ( OSCs). Pull-push mode of conjugated polymers, P1 and P2, containing electron pulling unit of N-alkyl-2,2′-bithiophene-3,3′-dicarboximide ( BTI) and electron-pushing unit of ININE were synthesized for the broader absorption of the solar radiation. By incorporation of electron pulling and pushing units using Stille polymerization with catalyst of Pd(0), the polymers were synthesized. Absorption peaks of the thin films of P2, with thiophene unit linking the electron-pulling and pushing units, was shifted to the region of longer wavelength than P1. Two synthesized polymers provided deep energy levels of highest occupied molecular orbital between −5.76 and −5.59 eV and suitable energy levels of lowest unoccupied molecular orbital between −3.65 and −3.55 eV. This study examined the nomological network for the Family Influence Scale in the United States and India. Specifically, the study assessed the relationship between family influences on career decision making and the constructs of family obligation, work volition, calling, work values, and occupational engagement across two countries. A total of 136 U.S. participants and 377 participants from India responded to a survey via Amazon Mechanical Turk. The study found support for the construct validity and the four different types of family influences both between the United States and the Indian population. This study examines the in vivo uptake and internalization of fluorescent quantum dots (QDs) in Escherichia coli and Caenorhabditis elegans models. E. coli cells were directly exposed to QDs of different concentrations (up to 20 nM), and the uptake or sorption of QDs was monitored by flow cytometry. We observed a concentration-dependent increase in QD fluorescence with no changes in the forward or side scatter for any QD concentration, likely because the QDs are very small. Furthermore, QD uptake/adsorption did not significantly affect E. coli viability assessed by colony formation and size. QD-exposed E. coli were then fed to C. elegans to monitor the localization and effects of QDs. In our study, QDs had no observable effect on the viability or reproduction of C. elegans . We visualized QD incorporation and biodistribution by using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) with z -stacks, lambda scanning, and linear unmixing techniques, which allowed us to observe QDs in vivo and deconvolute QD fluorescence from autofluorescence. CLSM z -stacks with 10-μm depth revealed that the QDs exclusively localized to the gut and intestine with no transfer to other tissues. The combination of these techniques for in vivo imaging of QDs and other fluorescent nanoparticles will be a powerful tool for future studies examining the uptake and biodistribution of nanoparticles. Earthworms are standard species used in soil ecotoxicology to evaluate the adverse effects of soil contaminants. This study proposes the assessment of the viability of earthworm gut microbes as an indicator in a site-specific test of soil toxicity. Using slow centrifugation, the microbial community was extracted from the guts of earthworms that had been exposed to copper (Cu)- or nickel (Ni)-contaminated soil. Microbial cell viability was assessed using calcein acetoxymethyl ester staining and flow cytometric analysis. We confirmed a metal concentration-dependent decrease in the cell viability of the gut microbial community. The general endpoints, including survival, abnormalities, coelomocyte activity, and metal bioaccumulation, showed a metal concentration-dependent response, and were strongly associated with gut microbial viability in the Ni-exposure group. In contrast, the general endpoints in the Cu-exposure group were significantly different from those in the former group, because the soil penetration rate of the earthworms was very low on the Cu-contaminated soil. Our results indicated that the gut microbial community viability assay holds potential for assessing the toxicity of soil to field worms by simply and rapidly monitoring the viability of the earthworm gut microbial community. Herein we report a simple n-doping method to enhance the performance of perovskite solar cells with a planar heterojunction structure. Devices with an n-doped PCBM electron transporting layer exhibit a power conversion efficiency of 13.8% with a remarkably enhanced short-circuit current of 22.0 mA cm−2 as compared to the devices with an un-doped PCBM layer. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the number and characteristics of US State Registrars of Vital Statistics (Vital Registrars) and State Systems Development Initiative (SSDI) Coordinators that link birth certificate and hospital discharge data as well as using linkage processes. Methods: Vital Registrars and SSDI Coordinators in all 52 vital records jurisdictions (50 states, District of Columbia, and New York City) were asked to complete a 41-question survey. We examined frequency distributions among completed surveys using SAS 9.3. Results: The response rate was 100 % (N = 52) for Vital Registrars and 96 % (N = 50) for SSDI Coordinators. Nearly half of Vital Registrars (n = 22) and SSDI Coordinators (n = 23) reported that their jurisdiction linked birth certificate and hospital discharge records at least once in the last 4 years. Among those who link, the majority of Vital Registrars (77.3 %) and SSDI Coordinators (82.6 %) link both maternal and infant hospital discharge records to the birth certificate. Of those who do not link, 43 % of the Vital Registrars and 55 % of SSDI Coordinators reported an interest in linking birth certificate and hospital discharge data. Reasons for not linking included lack of staff time, inability to access raw data, high cost, and unavailability of personal identifiers to link the two sources. Conclusions: Results of our analysis provide a national perspective on data linkage practices in the US. Dopamine–melanin nanospheres are promising materials for photoprotection, structural coloration, and thermoregulation due to their unusual optical and chemical properties. Here, we report the experimental parameters which influence size of dopamine–melanin nanospheres and uniformity. Dopamine precursors are oxidatively polymerized in basic aqueous medium. Therefore, concentration of hydroxide ions significantly influences reaction rate and size of nanospheres. To investigate the effect of hydroxide ions, we adjust three different parameters which affect pH of medium: concentration of sodium hydroxide and dopamine hydrochloride, and reaction temperature. At constant temperature, concentration of hydroxide ions is linearly proportional to initial reaction rates which determine the number of nuclei for nanosphere growth. Temperature alters not only initial reaction rate but also diffusivity of molecules, leading to deviation from the relation between the reaction rate and the number of nuclei. The diameter of dopamine–melanin nanospheres can be readily controlled in a range of 80–490 nm through adjusting concentration of dopamine precursor, while maintaining uniform-size distribution and dispersion stability. The synthesized nanospheres are analyzed to confirm the chemical structure, which is composed of approximately 6 indole units. Background: Few studies have explored the trends in central precocious puberty (CPP) in Asian populations. This study assessed the prevalence and annual incidence of CPP among Korean children. Methods: Using data from the Korean Health Insurance Review Agency from 2004 to 2010, we reviewed the records of 21,351 children, including those registered with a diagnosis of CPP for the first time and those diagnosed with CPP who were treated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs. Results: The prevalence of CPP was 55.9 per 100,000 girls and 1.7 per 100,000 boys, respectively. The overall incidence of CPP was 15.3 per 100,000 girls, and 0.6 per 100,000 boys. The annual incidence of CPP in girls significantly increased from 3.3 to 50.4 per 100,000 girls; whereas in boys, it gradually increased from 0.3 to 1.2 per 100,000 boys. The annual incidence of CPP in girls consistently increased at all ages year by year, with greater increases at older ages (≥6 years of age), and smaller increases in girls aged < 6 years. In contrast, the annual incidence remained relatively constant in boys aged < 8 years, while a small increase was observed only in boys aged 8 years. The increase of annual incidence showed significant differences depending on age and gender (P <0.0001). Conclusions: The annual incidence of CPP has substantially increased among Korean girls over the past 7 years. Continued monitoring of CPP trends among Korean children will be informative. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different taurine levels on the conjugated bile acid composition and growth of juvenile rockfish. Five taurine level diets were made by the supplementation of taurine (0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0%) to a basal diet. Fish meal washed with 70% ethanol to exclude taurine was used for the sole protein source. Feeding experiments were accomplished at 15°C using juvenile fish (initial BW: 13.5 g). Fish were fed the experimental diets for 4 months. At the end of experiments, fish were weighed and stored at −80°C for analysis of free amino acids and conjugated bile acids contents. The growth performance and feed efficiency of Korean rockfish were improved by taurine supplementation in the experimental diets. The taurine contents of the whole body increased with the increase in the taurine supplementation. The primary conjugated bile acids in gall bladder were taurocholic acid (83.5-165.6 mg mL−1) and taurochenodeoxycholic acid (6.3-20.0 mg mL−1). Total bile acids increased with increases in dietary taurine. Taurocholic acid content was more than 95% of the total conjugated bile acids. This indicates that taurine is the sole amino acid to make conjugated bile acid in Korean rockfish. Dietary taurine levels improved the conjugated bile acid composition in juvenile Korean rockfish. Background/Aims: This study investigated the safety of endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL) under conscious sedation with midazolam and sequential flumazenil after procedure in these patients. Methods: A total of 279 patients who underwent secondary prophylactic EVL at our institution between April 2012 and June 2014, were enrolled. Conscious sedation was achieved using intravenous midazolam, and flumazenil was routinely used as an antidote immediately after EVL. Patients with sleep (n = 165) and non-sleep (n = 55) endoscopy were matched using propensity score analysis (3:1). Frequencies of overt hepatic encephalopathy (HEP) and patient' satisfactions with EVL were compared between the 2 groups. Results: Of the 279 patients, 155 (55.6%) were of Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) class, B or C, and 224 (80.3%) patients underwent sleep endoscopy. After propensity score analysis, overt HEP was observed in 1 (0.4%) of the 165 patients in the sedated group, but not found in any in the non-sedated group. Patient' satisfaction with EVL was better in the sedated group (p < 0.001). Twenty-nine (65.9%) of the 44 patients with CTP class C underwent sleep endoscopy, and only one (3.4%) experienced overt HEP. Conclusions: Prophylactic EVL under conscious sedation using midazolam and flumazenil is probably safe in cirrhotic patients without experience of HEP, even in those of CTP class C. © 2015 S. Rockfish, Sebastes schlegelii (mean weight 14.53 ± 1.14 cm, and mean weight 38.36 ± 3.45 g) were exposed for 4 weeks (2 weeks and 4 weeks) with the different levels of ammonia in the concentrations of 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 mg/L at 19 and 24 °C. The ammonia exposure induced significant alterations in antioxidant responses. The activities of SOD, CAT, and GST were considerably increased by the ammonia exposure depending on water temperature, whereas the GSH level was notably decreased after 2 and 4 weeks. In the stress indicators, the cortisol and HSP 70 were significantly elevated by the exposure to ammonia depending on water temperature. In innate immune responses, the phagocytosis and lysozyme activity were notably decreased by ammonia exposure depending on water temperature after 2 and 4 weeks. Background: Individuals with problematic Internet use (PIU) are known to experience increased craving for immediate monetary reward despite long-term negative consequences. What remains unclear is whether their sensitivity to monetary loss is altered. We investigated neural alterations in brain regions involved in the anticipation of a monetary reward and loss avoidance in order to advance our understanding of the characteristics of PIU.Methods: A total of 11 adults with PIU and 22 age-matched controls participated in this functional magnetic resonance imaging study. Inside the scanner, participants performed a monetary incentive learning task during which they chose one of two fractal stimuli associated with monetary gain (reward trials) or avoidance of monetary loss (avoidance trials).Results: We found that, relative to controls, activity in the posterior insula during reward anticipation was greater in participants with PIU, whereas its activity during avoidance anticipation was reduced. No group differences in activation were found during reception phases.Conclusions: Given the roles of the posterior insula in the cortical representation of somatosensory arousal, our results suggest that individuals with PIU may experience more elaborate somatosensory arousal during the anticipation of monetary reward and yet experience less elaborate somatosensory arousal during the anticipation of loss avoidance compared with typical controls. Noroviruses are the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis in humans. Development of an effective vaccine is required for reducing their outbreaks. In order to develop a GI norovirus vaccine, Newcastle disease virus vectors, rLaSota and modified rBC, were used to express VP1 protein of Norwalk virus. Co-expression of VP1 and VP2 proteins by Newcastle disease virus vectors resulted in enhanced expression of Norwalk virus VP1 protein and self-assembly of VP1 protein into virus-like particles. Furthermore, the Norwalk virus-specific IgG response induced in mice by Newcastle disease virus vectors was similar to that induced by baculovirus-expressed virus-like particles in mice. However, the modified rBC vector in the presence of VP2 protein induced significantly higher levels of cellular and mucosal immune responses than those induced by baculovirus-expressed VLPs. These results indicate that Newcastle disease virus has great potential for developing a live Norwalk virus vaccine by inducing humoral, cellular and mucosal immune responses in humans. Polymorphisms in the genes encoding enzymes in the folate metabolism pathway have been associated with male infertility and chromosome abnormalities. The aim of this study was to analyze the distribution of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), methionine synthase (MTR), and methionine synthase reductase (MTRR) polymorphisms in fertile men and infertile men with non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA). A case-control study comprising 85 infertile men with NOA and 246 fertile men as controls was carried out.MTHFRc.677C > T (rs1801133),MTHFRc.1298A > C (rs1801131),MTRc.2756A > G (rs1805087), andMTRRc.66A > G (rs1801394) polymorphisms were determined using the polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism technique. There were significant differences in AC + CC genotype (OR = 1.9, 95% CI = 1.1–3.2) and C allele frequencies (OR = 1.8, 95% CI = 1.2–2.8) ofMTHFRc.1298A > C polymorphism between NOA patients and controls after applying the Bonferroni correction. Moreover, the 1298AC genotype, 1298AC + CC genotype, and 1298C allele frequencies were statistically significant in NOA with chromosomal abnormalities and/or a Y chromosome deletion compared to the controls (AC genotype: OR = 3.0; AC + CC genotype: OR = 3.0; C allele: OR = 2.3). Considering the other polymorphisms, no differences were found between cases and controls. We report new random copolymers using the electron-deficient unit N-alkyl-2,2′-bithiophene-3,3′-dicarboximide ( BTI) for organic solar cells. For absorption over a broader range of the solar spectrum, push-pull types of conjugated polymers PBTIBDT- 3, PBTIBDT- 5, and PBTIBDT- 7, containing 4,8-bis(2-octyldodecyloxy)benzo[1,2- b;3,4- b']dithiophene ( BDT) as electron-pushing unit and BTI as electron-pulling unit, were synthesized. The polymers were synthesized by coupling electron-pushing and electron-pulling units by Stille polymerization with Pd(0) catalyst. The incorporation of more BTI units induced more red shift of the absorption spectra of the polymer thin films. The device comprising PBTIBDT- 5 and PC71BM (1:1) showed VOC = 0.76 V, JSC = 3.28 mA/cm2, and fill factor ( FF) = 0.51, giving a power conversion efficiency of 1.26%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Juvenile sablefish were fed a low taurine, basal feed with seven graded levels of supplemental taurine to determine taurine requirements for growth and feed efficiency. The basal feed was plant based, formulated primarily with soy and corn proteins with a minimal (9%) amount of fishmeal. The unsupplemented, basal feed contained 0.14% taurine. Experimental feeds were supplemented with 0, 0.25, 0.50, 1.0, 1.5, 3.0, and 6.0% taurine. Using the five parameter, saturated kinetic model (5 SKM), peak weight gain was predicted at 1.5% dietary taurine. Optimum weight gain, as defined as the region of the 5 SKM curve corresponding to at least 95% of peak, was predicted between 0.4% and 5.8% dietary taurine. Peak feed efficiency was predicted at 1.1% dietary taurine with optimum weight gain predicted between 0.4% and 4.2%. Whole body and muscle tissue protein and lipid content were not affected by taurine supplementation. Tissue taurine content increased asymptotically with increasing dietary taurine supplementation. Whole body tissue became saturated at 0.25 ± 0.02% taurine, expressed on a wet weight basis. Muscle tissue became saturated at 0.34 ± 0.02% taurine. Results from this study should increase the performance of alternative, plant based feeds formulated for sablefish and enable regulatory agencies better estimate the potential human exposure to taurine from the consumption of sablefish receiving these feeds. The 2-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 heterointerface was analyzed using frequency-dependent impedance spectroscopy. The electrical conduction of 2DEG significantly influences the high-frequency impedance and induces dielectric amplification at low frequency regimes. The impedance responses obtained from the LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 oxide was modeled using an equivalent circuit model. The frequency-dependent characterization used here does not necessitate the formation of ohmic contacts between the 2DEG layer and the adjacent electrodes. Through thermal bias-stress tests, the 2DEG conduction mechanism is proposed to partially originate from the oxygen vacancy-controlled defect concepts, indicating the controllability of 2DEG transport.
