To seek a feasible technique for processing waste printed circuit boards (PCBs), pretreatment of PCBs by table separation and further bioleached by moderate thermophiles in a stirred tank reactor were investigated. The shaking table separation, conducted after grinding and sieving of PCBs, produced two fractions: metal-rich parts (RPCBs), which is more suitable for pyrometallurgy process than untreated PCBs, and metal-poor parts (PPCBs) with only 8.83% metals was then bioleached by a mixed culture of moderate thermophiles effectively. After adaptation, the mixed culture could tolerate 80 g/L PPCBs. The bioleaching results showed that metals recovery was 85.23% Zn, 76.59% Cu and 70.16% Al in only 7 days. Trace Pb and Sn were detected in the leachate because of precipitating. The microorganism community structure was analyzed by amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis. Two moderately thermophilic bacteria species were identified as Leptospirillum ferriphilum and Acidithiobacillus caldus . Furthermore, uncultured Thermoplasmatales archaeon was also detected in the leaching system. It was also shown that moderate thermophiles revealed best bioleaching ability when compared with mesophiles and the mixture of mesophiles and moderate thermophiles. Finally, we designed a two-stage process model according to the present study to achieve semi-industrial waste PCBs recycling and economic feasibility analysis indicated that the process was profitable. The study investigated photocatalytic water splitting for O2 production under visible light irradiation using neodymium vanadium oxide (NdVO4) and vanadium oxide (V2O5) hybrid powders. The results in a sacrificial agent of 0.01 M AgNO3 solution were obtained, and the highest photocatalytic O2 evolution was 2.63 μmol/h, when the hybrid powders were prepared by mixing Nd and V at a volume ratio of 1:3 at a calcination temperature of 350 °C for 1 h. The hybrid powders were synthesized by neodymium nitrate and ammonium metavanadate using the glycothermal method in ethylene glycol at 120 °C for 1 h. The hybrid powders consisted of two shapes, NdVO4 nanoparticles and the cylindrical V2O5 particles, and they possessed the ability for photocatalytic oxygen (O2) evolution during irradiation with visible light. Transition-metal-catalyzed asymmetric α-arylation of carbonyl compounds is a widely studied method for C–C bond formation. Recently, the α-arylation of α-fluoro ketones has been reported, including enantioselective α-arylation of α-fluoro ketones. However, the asymmetric α-arylation of α-fluoro carbonyl compounds in the carboxylic acid oxidation state has not been reported. We report the enantioselective α-arylation of α-fluorooxindoles with aryl triflates. The reaction occurs in high yield and with high enantioselectivity when catalyzed by a Pd–Segphos complex. Rapid progress in information and communication technologies ( ICTs) has fueled the popularity of e-learning. However, an e-learning environment is limited in that online instructors cannot monitor immediately whether students remain focus during online autonomous learning. Therefore, this study tries to develop a novel attention aware system ( AAS) capable of recognizing students' attention levels accurately based on electroencephalography ( EEG) signals, thus having high potential to be applied in providing timely alert for conveying low-attention level feedback to online instructors in an e-learning environment. To construct AAS, attention responses of students and their corresponding EEG signals are gathered based on a continuous performance test ( CPT), ie, an attention assessment test. Next, the AAS is constructed by using training and testing data by the Neuro Sky brainwave detector and the support vector machine ( SVM), a well-known machine learning model. Additionally, based on the discrete wavelet transform ( DWT), the collected EEG signals are decomposed into five primary bands (ie, alpha, beta, gamma, theta, and delta). Each primary band contains five statistical parameters (including approximate entropy, total variation, energy, skewness, and standard deviation), thus generating 25 potential brainwave features associated with students' attention level for constructing the AAS. An attempt based on genetic algorithm ( GA) is also made to enhance the prediction performance of the proposed AAS in terms of identifying students' attention levels. According to GA, the seven most influential features are selected from 25 considered features; parameters of the proposed AAS are also optimized. Analytical results indicate that the proposed AAS can accurately recognize individual student's attention state as either a high or low level, and the average accuracy rate reaches as high as 89.52%. Moreover, the proposed AAS is integrated with a video lecture tagging system to examine whether the proposed AAS can accurately detect students' low-attention periods while learning about electrical safety in the workplace via a video lecture. Four experiments are designed to assess the prediction performance of the proposed AAS in terms of identifying the periods of video lecture with high- or low-attention levels during learning processes. Analytical results indicate that the proposed AAS can accurately identify the low-attention periods of video lecture generated by students when engaging in a learning activity with video lecture. Meanwhile, the proposed AAS can also accurately identify the low-attention periods of video lecture generated by students to some degree even when students engage in a learning activity by a video lecture with random disturbances. Furthermore, strong negative correlations are found between the students' learning performance (ie, posttest score and progressive score) and the low-attention periods of video lecture identified by the proposed AAS. Results of this study demonstrate that the proposed AAS is effective, capable of assisting online instructors in evaluating students' attention levels to enhance their online learning performance. Simply coating 1 wt.% of platinum on titanium dioxide (TiO2) surface resulted in simple preparation of platinized TiO2 (Pt-TiO2). This study demonstrated the photodegradation of atrazine (ATZ) using either Pt-TiO2 or TiO2 as a photocatalyst under 352 nm light irradiation. The Pt-TiO2-catalyzed ATZ degradation reached 76% in 3 hours without adding H2O2 solution or aeration, which was more than 10% higher than the TiO2-catalyzed reaction. The decomposition product of Pt-TiO2-catalyzed ATZ degradation was mainly cyanuric acid. Thus, Pt-TiO2 as an effective photocatalyst has three main advantages in the photodegradation of ATZ under 352 nm irradiation. First, the coated Pt can facilitate the generation of appropriate amounts of OH radicals, so it can prevent the formation of over-oxidized TiO2. Second, aeration was not needed. A UV-curable, flame-retardant monomer, DAPP (bis[di-acryloyloxyethyl]-p-tert-butylphenyl- phosphate), was synthesized based on BPDCP (4-tert-butylphenyl-dichloro phosphate) and HEA (2-hydroxy ethyl acrylate). DAPP was blended with regular bisphenol A epoxy acrylate (BAEA) in various ratios to yield various phosphorus contents. The TGA-IR (thermogravimetric analyzer interface with an infrared spectrometer) results demonstrate that compounding 30 mol % DAPP with BAEA significantly reduced the amount of released CO gas. In contrast, the peak intensity of CO2 is independent of phosphorus content. The limiting oxygen index (LOI), reaching the saturated value of 26, and the heat release rate (HRR) measured using a cone-calorimeter, 156.43 KW/m2, confirm the saturation point when 30 mol % DAPP was compounded into BAEA. A study of the kinetics of pyrolysis reveals that Ea decreases as the phosphorus content increases. Both the TGA-IR and pyrolysis results reveal that the phosphorus compound DAPP is easily decomposed during the initial stage of burning to form an insulating layer, which inhibits further burning of the resin and the consequent release of other flammable gases. This paper uses a divergence-conforming B-spline fluid discretization to address the long-standing issue of poor mass conservation in immersed methods for computational fluid–structure interaction (FSI) that represent the influence of the structure as a forcing term in the fluid subproblem. We focus, in particular, on the immersogeometric method developed in our earlier work, analyze its convergence for linear model problems, then apply it to FSI analysis of heart valves, using divergence-conforming B-splines to discretize the fluid subproblem. Poor mass conservation can manifest as effective leakage of fluid through thin solid barriers. This leakage disrupts the qualitative behavior of FSI systems such as heart valves, which exist specifically to block flow. Divergence-conforming discretizations can enforce mass conservation exactly, avoiding this problem. To demonstrate the practical utility of immersogeometric FSI analysis with divergence-conforming B-splines, we use the methods described in this paper to construct and evaluate a computational model of an in vitro experiment that pumps water through an artificial valve. Room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are an emerging class of electrolytes for supercapacitors. In this work, we investigate the effects of different supercapacitor models and anion shape on the electrical double layers (EDLs) of two different RTILs: 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([Emim][Tf2N]) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium 2-(cyano)pyrrolide ([Emim][CNPyr]) bymolecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The EDLmicrostructure is represented by number densities of cations and anions, and the potential drop near neutral and charged electrodes reveal that the supercapacitor model with a single electrode has the same EDL structure as the model with two opposite electrodes. Nevertheless, the employment of the one-electrode model without tuning the bulk density of RTILs is more time-saving in contrast to the two-electrode one. With the one-electrode model, our simulation demonstrated that the shapes of anions significantly imposed effects on the microstructure of EDLs. The EDL differential capacitance vs. potential (C-V) curves of [Emim][CNPyr] electrolyte exhibit higher differential capacitance at positive potentials. Stability of neuronal connectivity is critical for brain functions, and morphological perturbations are associated with neurodegenerative disorders. However, how neuronal morphology is maintained in the adult brain remains poorly understood. Here, we identify Wnt5a, a member of the Wnt family of secreted morphogens, as an essential factor in maintaining dendritic architecture in the adult hippocampus and for related cognitive functions in mice. Wnt5a expression in hippocampal neurons begins postnatally, and its deletion attenuated CaMKII and Rac1 activity, reduced GluN1 glutamate receptor expression, and impaired synaptic plasticity and spatial learning and memory in 3-mo-old mice. With increased age, Wnt5a loss caused progressive attrition of dendrite arbors and spines in Cornu Ammonis (CA)1 pyramidal neurons and exacerbated behavioral defects. Wnt5a functions cell-autonomously to maintain CA1 dendrites, and exogenous Wnt5a expression corrected structural anomalies even at late-adult stages. These findings reveal a maintenance factor in the adult brain, and highlight a trophic pathway that can be targeted to ameliorate dendrite loss in pathological conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Worldwide, cancers of the oral cavity and pharynx comprise the sixth most common malignancies. Histologically, more than 90% of oral cancers are squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Epidemiologic data strongly support the role of exogenous factors such as tobacco, alcohol, and human papilloma virus infection as major causative agents. Avoidance of risk factors has only been partially successful, and survival rates have not improved despite advances in therapeutic approaches. Therefore, new or improved approaches to prevention and/or early detection are critical. Better understanding of the mechanisms of oral carcinogenesis can assist in the development of novel biomarkers for early detection and strategies for disease prevention. Toward this goal, several animal models for carcinogenesis in the oral cavity have been developed. Among these are xenograft, and transgenic animal models, and others employing the synthetic carcinogens such as 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene in hamster cheek pouch and 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide in rats and mice. Additional animal models employing environmental carcinogens such as benzo[a]pyrene and N'-nitrosonornicotine have been reported. Each model has certain advantages and disadvantages. Models that (1) utilize environmental carcinogens, (2) reflect tumor heterogeneity, and (3) accurately represent the cellular and molecular changes involved in the initiation and progression of oral cancer in humans could provide a realistic platform. To achieve this goal, we introduced a novel nonsurgical mouse model to study oral carcinogenesis induced by dibenzo[a,l]pyrene (DB[a,l]P), an environmental pollutant and tobacco smoke constituent, and its diol epoxide metabolite (±)-anti-11,12-dihydroxy-13,14-epoxy-11,12,13,14-tetrahydrodibenzo[a,l]pyrene [(±)-anti-DB[a,l]PDE]. On the basis of a detailed comparison of oral cancer induced by DB[a,l]P with that induced by the other above-mentioned oral carcinogens with respect to dose, duration, species and strain, cellular and molecular targets, and relative carcinogenic potency, our animal model may offer a more realistic platform to study oral carcinogenesis. In this perspective, we also discuss our preclinical studies to demonstrate the potential of black raspberry extracts on the prevention of OSCC. Specifically, we were the first to demonstrate that black raspberry inhibited DB[a,l]P-DNA binding and of particular importance its capacity to enhance the repair of DB[a,l]P-induced bulky lesions in DNA. We believe that the information presented in this perspective will stimulate further research on the impact of environmental carcinogens in the development of oral cancer and may lead to novel strategies toward the control and prevention of this disease. Tripal is an open source software package for developing biological databases with a focus on genetic and genomic data. It consists of a set of core modules that deliver essential functions for loading and displaying data records and associated attributes including organisms, sequence features and genetic markers. Beyond the core modules, community members are encouraged to contribute extension modules to build on the Tripal core and to customize Tripal for individual community needs. To expand the utility of the Tripal software system, particularly for RNASeq data, we developed two new extension modules. Tripal Elasticsearch enables fast, scalable searching of the entire content of a Tripal site as well as the construction of customized advanced searches of specific data types. We demonstrate the use of this module for searching assembled transcripts by functional annotation. A second module, Tripal Analysis Expression, houses and displays records from gene expression assays such as RNA sequencing. This includes biological source materials (biomaterials), gene expression values and protocols used to generate the data. In the case of an RNASeq experiment, this would reflect the individual organisms and tissues used to produce sequencing libraries, the normalized gene expression values derived from the RNASeq data analysis and a description of the software or code used to generate the expression values. The module will load data from common flat file formats including standard NCBI Biosample XML. Data loading, display options and other configurations can be controlled by authorized users in the Drupal administrative backend. Amyloid precursor protein (APP) is enriched at the synapse, but its synaptic function is still poorly understood. We previously showed that GABAergic short-term plasticity is impaired in App knock-out (App-/-) animals, but the precise mechanism by which APP regulates GABAergic synaptic transmission has remained elusive. Using electrophysiological, biochemical, moleculobiological, and pharmacological analysis, here we show that APP can physically interact with KCC2, a neuron-specific K+-Cl- cotransporter that is essential for Cl-homeostasis and fast GABAergic inhibition. APP deficiency results in significant reductions in both total and membrane KCC2 levels, leading to a depolarizing shift in the GABA reversal potential (EGABA). Simultaneous measurement of presynaptic action potentials and inhibitory postsynaptic currents (IPSCs) in hippocampal neurons reveals impaired unitary IPSC amplitudes attributable to a reduction in α1 subunit levels of GABAAR. Importantly, restoration of normal KCC2 expression and function in App-/- mice rescues EGABA, GABAAR α1 levels and GABAAR mediated phasic inhibition. We show that APP functions to limit tyrosine-phosphorylation and ubiquitination and thus subsequent degradation of KCC2, providing a mechanism by which APP influences KCC2 abundance. Together, these experiments elucidate a novel molecular pathway in which APP regulates, via protein-protein interaction with KCC2, GABAAR mediated inhibition in the hippocampus. Peer-assessment and video comment-sharing are effective learning strategies for students to receive feedback on their learning. Researchers have emphasized the need for well-designed peer involvement in order to improve students' abilities in the cognitive and affective domains. Although student perceptions of peer-assessment have been studied extensively in higher education, few studies have focused on the effects of the peer-assessment strategy on students' performance from the affective perspective, especially in Physical Education courses. Therefore, in this study, a peer-assessment mobile physical education approach is proposed for developing a mobile learning system for a Kung Fu Tai-Chi physical education course. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, an experiment was conducted by assigning 42 college students to participate in this learning activity. The experimental results show that the proposed approach not only promoted the students' learning interest and motivation, but also improved their learning self-efficacy and socialization. Through the analysis of the J-A model, the metal magnetic memory signal of ΔB (the distance between Br and -Br) can reflect the fatigue degree, and can be verified by bending fatigue test of 45# steel. The test results show that ΔB has three stages in the fatigue process, which correspond to the entire crack propagation process. Background: Adenocarcinoma of esophagogastric junction (AEG) was initially proposed in 1999 by Siewert. During recent decades, the incidence and prevalence of AEG were arising globally whereas the incidence of gastric cancer is gradually declining. Complete blood counting and liver function tests, as the routine examination of immune and nutritional status, were reported to be the predictors of overall survival (OS) in some tumors. However, little is known about the prognostic significance of these indexes in AEG patients. The purpose of this study was to assess the prediction of preoperative pre-albumin, hemoglobin, and prognostic nutritional index (PNI) for survival outcomes in AEG patients. Methods: A retrospective cohort of 101 AEG patients followed by radical surgery was recruited between January and July 2010. Clinical and laboratory data were obtained and used to evaluate the predictive value through survival analysis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis determined 200 mg/L, 120 g/L, 5 cm, and 51 as the cutoff values of pre-albumin, hemoglobin, tumor size, and PNI, respectively. Results: Univariate analysis revealed that AEG patients with hemoglobin =120 g/L, albumin =40 g/L, prealbumin =200 g/L, PNI =51, and tumor size <5 cm had longer OS (P < 0.05). Additionally, pre-albumin, tumor size, and TNM stage were demonstrated to be independent prognostic indicators by multivariate analysis with Cox regression, and the performance of pre-albumin for predicting OS in AEG patients was further identified by ROC curves (P = 0.006). Conclusions: Preoperative pre-albumin was an independent prognostic factor, and a high level of prealbumin predicted longer OS in AEG patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Autophagy is a cellular degradation process that is highly evolutionarily-conserved in yeast, plants, and animals. In plants, autophagy plays important roles in regulating intracellular degradation and recycling of amino acids in response to nutrient starvation, senescence, and other environmental stresses. Foxtail millet (Setaria italica) has strong resistance to stresses and has been proposed as an ideal material for use in the study of the physiological mechanisms of abiotic stress tolerance in plants. Although the genome sequence of foxtail millet (Setaria italica) is available, the characteristics and functions of abiotic stress-related genes remain largely unknown for this species. Results: A total of 37 putative ATG (autophagy-associated genes) genes in the foxtail millet genome were identified. Gene duplication analysis revealed that both segmental and tandem duplication events have played significant roles in the expansion of the ATG gene family in foxtail millet. Comparative synteny mapping between the genomes of foxtail millet and rice suggested that the ATG genes in both species have common ancestors, as their ATG genes were primarily located in similar syntenic regions. Gene expression analysis revealed the induced expression of 31 SiATG genes by one or more phytohormone treatments, 26 SiATG genes by drought, salt and cold, 24 SiATG genes by darkness and 25 SiATG genes by nitrogen starvation. Results of qRT-PCR showing that among 37 SiATG genes, the expression level of SiATG8a was the highest after nitrogen starvation treatment 24 h, suggesting its potential role in tolerance to nutrient starvation. Moreover, the heterologous expression of SiATG8a in rice improved nitrogen starvation tolerance. Compared to wild type rice, the transgenic rice performed better and had higher aboveground total nitrogen content when the plants were grown under nitrogen starvation conditions. Conclusions: Our results deepen understanding about the characteristics and functions of ATG genes in foxtail millet and also identify promising new genetic resources that should be of use in future efforts to develop varieties of foxtail millet and other crop species that have resistance to nitrogen deficiency stress. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is a powerful tool to tackle the transmission of monogenic inherited disorders in families carrying the diseases from generation to generation. It currently remains a challenging task, despite PGD having been developed over 25 years ago. The major difficulty is it does not have an easy and general formula for all mutations. Different gene locus needs individualized, customized design to make the diagnosis accurate enough to be applied on PGD, in which the quantity of DNA is scanty, whereas timely laboratory diagnosis is mandatory if fresh embryo transfer is desired occasionally. Indicators for outcome assessment of a successful PGD program include the successful diagnosis rate on blastomeres (Day 3 cleavage-stage embryo biopsy) or trophectoderm cells (Day 5/6 blastocyst biopsy), the implantation rate per embryo transferred, and the livebirth rate per oocyte retrieval cycle. Hemophilia A (HA) is an X-linked recessive bleeding disorder caused by various types of pathological defects in the factor VIII gene (F8). The mutation spectrum of the F8 is complex, according to our previous report, including large segmental intra-gene inversions, large segmental deletions spanning a few exons, point mutations, and total deletion caused by chromosomal structural rearrangements. In this review, the molecular methodologies used to tackle different mutants of the F8 in the PGD of HA are to be explained, and the experiences of successful use of amplification refractory mutation system-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (ARMS-qPCR) and linkage analysis for PGD of HA in our laboratory are also provided. Background: Von Willebrand disease (VWD) is not uncommon in Taiwan. In type 2 or type 3 VWD hemorrhagic symptoms are severer and laboratory data relatively more distinctive. De novo mutation and somatic mosaicism of type 2 VWD gene were rarely reported. Therefore clinical, laboratory and genetic studies of only type 2A, 2B and 2M VWD will be presented and issues of de novo mutation and somatic mosaicism will be explored. Methods: Fifty-four patients belonging to 23 unrelated families from all around the country in whom type 2 VWD exclusive of type 2N has been diagnosed not only by clinical and routine laboratory studies but also by genetic confirmation during 1990-2015 were investigated. A novel technique named amplification refractory mutation system-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (ARMS-qPCR) was used to confirm the presence of somatic mosaicism. Informed consent was obtained for study. Results: De novo mutation was identified in 4 families among 15 families (26.7 %) in whom family members including parents were available for examination. All their parents were free from bleeding symptoms and had no similar mutation as their respective affected daughter. An interesting example of somatic mosaicism of VWF gene mutation was found in a large family with type 2A VWD. The father carrying a mutated VWF gene, p.Arg1597Trp, transmitted this mutation to his 3 daughters, 1 son, 3 granddaughters and 2 grandsons. However, the father had normal laboratory findings and experienced no abnormal bleeding, while his offspring who inherited the mutation showed abnormal laboratory findings compatible with type 2A VWD and had history of abnormal bleedings. ARMS-qPCR revealed that the father had only 25.5 % mutant in his blood cells and 31.1 % mutant in his oral mucosal cells, while all his offspring had about 49 % mutant in their blood cells. Retroperitoneal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare lesion of unknown etiology. The management of IMT may be challenging due to its intermediate malignant potential, the possibility of local recurrence after surgical resection and its unique anatomic location, which makes radical resection impossible due to its proximity to vital structures. Thus, treatment for recurrence and metastasis mainly relies on chemotherapy. We herein report a case of a 60‑year‑old man with an IMT sized 6.7x5.1 cm, located in the left adrenal area, which was identified by a computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen. Radical surgical resection of the tumor was not feasible, as it was fixed to the left renal artery. After 5 months, the patient underwent CT‑guided radiofrequency ablation of the re‑growing tumor. An unresectable mass was detected in the patient's rectum by a CT scan of the pelvis. Subsequently, the patient underwent chemotherapy for the recurring and metastatic tumors. The chemotherapeutic regimens included epirubicin, dacarbazine and docetaxel. Over the last 6 months, after three cycles of therapy, the sizes of the primary and metastatic tumors had decreased on the follow‑up CT scan. Thus, chemotherapy effectively controlled the disease in this case, following unsuccessful surgical resection and radiofrequency ablation. Stripe (yellow) rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis Westend. f. sp. tritici Erikss., is one of the most damaging diseases in wheat and is especially damaging for winter and facultative wheat. The objective of this study was to understand stripe rust resistance in 100 wheat and facultative wheat entries from the International Winter Wheat Improvement Program by conducting experiments in a greenhouse and in four field environments in Washington State, USA, and by genotyping molecular markers linked to Yr genes. Percentages of entries resistant to the rust races at the seedling stage were: PST-17, 44%; PST-37, 32%; PST-43, 45%; PST-45, 49%;PST-116, 18%; PST-100, 17%; and PST-127, 8%. Molecular markers were positive for genes Yr9, Yr17, and Yr18 and negative for Yr5, Yr10, and Yr15. Yr18 was present in 44 entries (44%). By using the highly virulent races PST-127 and PST-100 under controlled conditions, 16 entries were shown to have high-temperature adult-plant (HTAP) resistance and resistant-moderately resistant field reactions at all four field sites. Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals recorded from sensor electrodes on the scalp can directly detect the brain dynamics in response to different emotional states. Emotion recognition from EEG signals has attracted broad attention, partly due to the rapid development of wearable computing and the needs of a more immersive human-computer interface (HCI) environment. To improve the recognition performance, multi-channel EEG signals are usually used. A large set of EEG sensor channels will add to the computational complexity and cause users inconvenience. ReliefF-based channel selection methods were systematically investigated for EEG-based emotion recognition on a database for emotion analysis using physiological signals (DEAP). Three strategies were employed to select the best channels in classifying four emotional states (joy, fear, sadness and relaxation). Furthermore, support vector machine (SVM) was used as a classifier to validate the performance of the channel selection results. The experimental results showed the effectiveness of our methods and the comparison with the similar strategies, based on the F-score, was given. Strategies to evaluate a channel as a unity gave better performance in channel reduction with an acceptable loss of accuracy. In the third strategy, after adjusting channels' weights according to their contribution to the classification accuracy, the number of channels was reduced to eight with a slight loss of accuracy (58.51% ± 10.05% versus the best classification accuracy 59.13% ± 11.00% using 19 channels). In addition, the study of selecting subject-independent channels, related to emotion processing, was also implemented. The sensors, selected subject-independently from frontal, parietal lobes, have been identified to provide more discriminative information associated with emotion processing, and are distributed symmetrically over the scalp, which is consistent with the existing literature. Mechanistic study has been carried out on the B(C6F5)3-catalyzed amine alkylation with carboxylic acid. The reaction includes acid-amine condensation and amide reduction steps. In condensation step, the catalyst-free mechanism is found to be more favorable than the B(C6F5)3-catalyzed mechanism, because the automatic formation of the stable B(C6F5)3-amine complex deactivates the catalyst in the latter case. Meanwhile, the catalyst-free condensation is constituted by nucleophilic attack and the indirect H2O-elimination (with acid acting as proton shuttle) steps. After that, the amide reduction undergoes a Lewis acid (B(C6F5)3)-catalyzed mechanism rather than a Brønsted acid (B(C6F5)3-coordinated HCOOH)-catalyzed one. The B(C6F5)3)-catalyzed reduction includes twice silyl-hydride transfer steps, while the first silyl transfer is the rate-determining step of the overall alkylation catalytic cycle. The above condensation-reduction mechanism is supported by control experiments (on both temperature and substrates). In this study, we reported the fabrication of an organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) using the metal oxide Nb-doped ZnO (NZO) and the common hole transport layer of N,N′-di(1-naphthyl)-N,N′-diphenyl-(1,1′-biphenyl)-4,4′-diamine (NPB) to form a novel hole injection layer with gradually-doped triple-layer structure (HITL). The comparison between the stepwise doped double-layer and uniformly doped device showed that the HITL structure could effectively improve the current efficiency of the OLED device. The results of both current density-voltage measurement by hole-only device (HOD) and the UV photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) confirmed that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level could help to improve the hole injection performance. In addition, the non-destructive analysis method of capacitance-voltage was used to observe the movement of charge carriers during the operation of the device. The comparison study indicated that by the stepwise doped double-layer injection layer, the influence of the doping gradient on the carrier injection was confirmed, and a smaller doping gradient was found to show the better performance of carrier injection. Based on the results obtained from this study, the maximum luminance and current efficiency of OLED device with HITL was found to be enhanced by approximately 2.48 times and 32.6% respectively when compared with the device without hole injection layer. Pineapple juice was added at three different points in the brewing process, (i) wort, (ii) toward the end of fermentation and (iii) at the beginning of maturation. The physicochemical properties, taste and aroma of the three fruit beers was compared to a control beer without addition of pineapple juice. The beers were analysed using an electronic nose (E-nose), head space solid phase micro-extraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) and head space gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS). Of the three fruit beers, esters characteristic of pineapple aroma was found in the beer produced with juice added late during primary fermentation. Further, the abundance of esters-isoamyl acetate, ethyl butyrate, ethyl acetate, ethyl hexanoate and phenethyl acetate-was higher. Sensory analysis showed the beer produced from the addition of juice late in fermentation had a superior aroma and was the most preferred in sensory testing. Purpose: Understanding the association between social determinants of health (SDoHs) and microbial keratitis (MK) can inform underlying risk for patients and identify risk factors associated with worse disease, such as presenting visual acuity (VA) and time to initial presentation. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study was conducted with patients presenting with MK to the cornea clinic at a tertiary care hospital in Madurai, India. Patient demographics, SDoH survey responses, geographic pollution, and clinical features at presentation were collected. Descriptive statistics, univariate analysis, multi-variable linear regression models, and Poisson regression models were utilized. Results: There were 51 patients evaluated. The mean age was 51.2 years (SD = 13.3); 33.3% were female and 55% did not visit a vision center (VC) prior to presenting to the clinic. The median presenting logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) VA was 1.1 [Snellen 20/240, inter-quartile range (IQR) = 20/80 to 20/4000]. The median time to presentation was 7 days (IQR = 4.5 to 10). The average particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) concentration, a measure of air pollution, for the districts from which the patients traveled was 24.3 µg/m3 (SD = 1.6). Age- and sex-adjusted linear regression and Poisson regression results showed that higher levels of PM2.5 were associated with 0.28 worse presenting logMAR VA (Snellen 2.8 lines, P = 0.002). Patients who did not visit a VC had a 100% longer time to presentation compared to those who did (incidence rate ratio = 2.0, 95% confidence interval = 1.3--3.0, P = 0.001). Conclusion: Patient SDoH and environmental exposures can impact MK presentation. Understanding SDoH is important for public health and policy implications to mitigate eye health disparities in India. Kinetic resolution of nitroallylic amines was established using chiral α,α-L-diphenylprolinol silyl ether auxiliary through isolation of the dihydrooxazine N-oxide intermediates. Further hydrolyzing the resting states provided tetrahydropyridines in high chemical yields and high to excellent stereoselectivities (up to >20:1 dr and 98% ee). A detailed mechanistic explanation for stereoselective protonation in the dihydrooxazine was probed computationally. Price-level, or "price-cap," regulation offers an alluring alternative to the traditional technique of monitoring a regulated firm's profits. This Article contrasts price-level regulation with conventional cost-of-service ratemaking and with Ramsey pricing. Price-level regulation stands as a market-based, incentive-driven "third way" between traditional regulation and complete deregulation. Although some jurisdictions have set price caps according to operating cost and rate-of-return calculations that clearly parallel those steps in conventional ratemaking, this Article will focus on price-level methodologies that combine an economy-wide measure of inflation with an x-factor reflecting total factor productivity within a regulated industry. After addressing the simpler component of price-level regulation, the choice of an inflation index, this Article devotes detailed attention to the treatment of the x-factor by two federal ratemaking agencies, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Closer examination of price cap methodologies adopted by FERC and the FCC suggests that price-level regulation based on inflation and an industry-specific X factor may be further streamlined. We investigated wavelength conversion for polarization multiplexing signal based on four-wave mixing in a semiconductor optical amplifier. We found that the converted signals endured crosstalk among the polmuxed channels. We also proposed and demonstrated a wavelength conversion scheme with polarization diversity technique. By utilizing the technique, the converted polarization multiplexing signal can be received without crosstalk. In addition, the performance of the proposed system is numerically analyzed with respect to the bit error rate of the converted signal, different frequency spacing between signal and pump and modulated data rate. Background: Tissue sampling for biliary stricture is important for differential diagnosis and further treatment. This study aims to assess the differences of transpapillary biliary biopsy for malignant biliary strictures between cholangiocarcinoma and pancreatic cancer. Methods: From January 2010 to December 2013, we retrospectively studied 79 patients who suffered from biliary strictures and received transpapillary forceps biopsy after sphincterotomy for tissue sampling. The diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of forceps biopsy were calculated in all cases for both cholangiocarcinoma and pancreatic cancer patients. Possible factors that distinguish malignant strictures from benign strictures and which could affect the accuracy of tissue sampling were analyzed. Results: There are 65 malignant and 14 benign biliary stricture patients enrolled. The malignant group has a significantly higher serum bilirubin level than the benign group, but age, clinical presentation, level of serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9, and alkaline phosphatase are not. The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV of forceps biopsy for biliary stricture are 53.85, 100, 100, and 31.82 %, respectively. The cholangiocarcinoma group has a higher sensitivity (73.53 versus 29.17 %, p < 0.001), older age, lower CA 19-9 level, and more common hepatic duct strictures than the pancreatic group. The age, serum CEA, CA 19-9 and the alkaline phosphatase level, serum bilirubin level >10 mg/dL, tissue sampling ≧3 are not significant factors affecting diagnostic accuracy in forceps biopsy for pancreatobiliary strictures. There is neither major bleeding nor perforation in our study. Conclusions: Transpapillary forceps biopsy of biliary strictures after sphincterotomy for tissue sampling is safe and a significantly higher sensitive method in cholangiocarcinoma but not in pancreatic cancer. Ferroelectricity and polarization reversal dynamics in Ba4Sm2Ti4Ta6O30 tungsten bronze ceramics were investigated by measuring dielectric spectra and the evolution of hysteresis loops over a wide temperature range. With decreasing temperature, the dielectric properties and differential scanning calorimetry results showed diffuse peaks at ~280 K with large thermal hysteresis, suggesting a first order ferroelectric transition. A dielectric relaxation was observed at low temperature that followed the Vogel-Fulcher relationship. The saturation and remanent polarizations of the Ba4Sm2Ti4Ta6O30 ceramics showed remarkable dependence on the applied field and temperature. The temperature dependence of the coercive field was divided into three linear regions and fitted to the Vopsaroiu model. Activation energies for polarization reversal of 0.73, 0.79, and 0.65 eV were determined for the following three regions: (I) the diffuse ferroelectric transition region (323.15-293.15 K), (II) the region just below the ferroelectric transition temperature (293.15-233.15 K), and (III) the low temperature relaxation region (233.15-173.15 K), respectively. The present study aimed to investigate the hepatoprotective effect of resveratrol (RSV) against ethanol-induced oxidative stress in vivo, and investigate the underlying mechanisms by which RSV exerts its anti-oxidative effects on hepatic cells. C57BL/6J mice were divided into four groups: Untreated control, ethanol-treated, RSV-treated, and ethanol + RSV-treated. The plasma lipid profile, hepatic lipid accumulation and antioxidative enzyme activities were analyzed. HepG2 cells were used as a cellular model to analyze the effects of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) in the RSV-mediated protection of ethanol-induced oxidative stress. In C57BL/6J mice, ethanol caused a significant increase in plasma triglyceride levels and hepatic lipid accumulation (P<0.05), whereas RSV notably increased SOD activity. In HepG2 cells, SOD activity was enhanced in the RSV-treated HepG2 cells, whereas the activity of CAT and GPx was not affected. Western blot and quantitative polymerase chain reaction analyses demonstrated that RSV significantly increased SOD protein and mRNA expression levels (P<0.05). Using a transient transfection assay, PPARγ was observed to participate in the regulation of SOD gene expression in RSV-administered HepG2 cells. To conclude, the results from the present study suggest that RSV may contribute towards the protection of hepatic cells from ethanol-induced oxidative stress via the induction of SOD activity and gene expression. For the gas flood process, crude oil physical properties including oil volume and viscosity would be greatly changed resulting from gas solution and extraction. First, solubility of natural gas in oil and brine was measured and compared. Meanwhile, the resulting oil expansion and viscosity reduction were experimentally tested. Second, oil viscosity increase due to extraction was studied by extraction experiments. Finally, oil recovery of natural gas and propane-enriched natural gas flood was studied under different pressures. Results show that solubility of natural gas in oil is dozens of times of that in brine. Variation of crude oil physical properties during natural gas injection mainly includes the remarkable volume expansion and viscosity reduction caused by gas dissolution into oil, and the oil volume shrinkage and viscosity increase caused by extraction are not so significant. The oil recovery of natural gas flood grows linearly with increased injection pressure and gas solubility in oil, but is still less than 90% even at 55 MPa, which indicates immiscible flood at 55 MPa. And the active joints with damping springs as the reduction vibration actuator, the reduction vibration seat model with the 3-PRPS parallel mechanism which had six degree of freedom was established. Based on the above analysis, the simulation model can be obtained. In order to verify the reliability of the simulation model, the experiment of vibration acceleration transmissibility was conducted and the result was then compared with that of the numerical computation. Their results were consistent with each other. It indicated that the simulation model was reliable and could be used for the subsequent analysis. Then, influence factor of vibration acceleration transmissibility was researched based on the verified simulation model. In order to obtain a suspension system with better reduction vibration performance, making the maximum vibration acceleration transmissibility in the vertical and horizontal be minimum was set as the optimisation objective. And the above influence factors were taken as the design variables. Finally, the ride comfort of vehicles was improved. In this study, two kinds of reference drums were developed. One type was constructed with nine layers of large-area sources filled with different materials having five different densities. The other type of reference drums was constructed with nine rod sources filled with the same materials of different densities. The efficiency calibration of a plastic scintillation counter in 4 π counting geometry using these two kinds of drums showed that rod-source drums resulted in higher counting efficiency than layered source drums. The counting rates obtained from rod-source drums were closer to those obtained from a standard drum with water solution than counting rates from drums with layered sources. The results of this study recommend to use reference drums with rod-sources to compensate the drawbacks of standard drums with water solution of not being able to adjust the density of material. We present a new method for immersogeometric fluid flow analysis that directly uses the CAD boundary representation (B-rep) of a complex object and immerses it into a locally refined, non-boundary-fitted discretization of the fluid domain. The motivating applications include analyzing the flow over complex geometries, such as moving vehicles, where the detailed geometric features usually require time-consuming, labor-intensive geometry cleanup or mesh manipulation for generating the surrounding boundary-fitted fluid mesh. The proposed method avoids the challenges associated with such procedures. A new method to perform point membership classification of the background mesh quadrature points is also proposed. To faithfully capture the geometry in intersected elements, we implement an adaptive quadrature rule based on the recursive splitting of elements. Dirichlet boundary conditions in intersected elements are enforced weakly in the sense of Nitsche's method. To assess the accuracy of the proposed method, we perform computations of the benchmark problem of flow over a sphere represented using B-rep. Quantities of interest such as drag coefficient are in good agreement with reference values reported in the literature. The results show that the density and distribution of the surface quadrature points are crucial for the weak enforcement of Dirichlet boundary conditions and for obtaining accurate flow solutions. Also, with sufficient levels of surface quadrature element refinement, the quadrature error near the trim curves becomes insignificant. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our immersogeometric method for high-fidelity industrial scale simulations by performing an aerodynamic analysis of an agricultural tractor directly represented using B-rep. Background: Periodontitis, which progressively destroys tooth-supporting structures, is one of the most widespread infectious diseases and the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Evidence from preclinical trials and small-scale pilot clinical studies indicates that stem cells derived from periodontal ligament tissues are a promising therapy for the regeneration of lost/damaged periodontal tissue. This study assessed the safety and feasibility of using autologous periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) as an adjuvant to grafting materials in guided tissue regeneration (GTR) to treat periodontal intrabony defects. Our data provide primary clinical evidence for the efficacy of cell transplantation in regenerative dentistry. Methods: We conducted a single-center, randomized trial that used autologous PDLSCs in combination with bovine-derived bone mineral materials to treat periodontal intrabony defects. Enrolled patients were randomly assigned to either the Cell group (treatment with GTR and PDLSC sheets in combination with Bio-oss®) or the Control group (treatment with GTR and Bio-oss® without stem cells). During a 12-month follow-up study, we evaluated the frequency and extent of adverse events. For the assessment of treatment efficacy, the primary outcome was based on the magnitude of alveolar bone regeneration following the surgical procedure. Results: A total of 30 periodontitis patients aged 18 to 65 years (48 testing teeth with periodontal intrabony defects) who satisfied our inclusion and exclusion criteria were enrolled in the study and randomly assigned to the Cell group or the Control group. A total of 21 teeth were treated in the Control group and 20 teeth were treated in the Cell group. All patients received surgery and a clinical evaluation. No clinical safety problems that could be attributed to the investigational PDLSCs were identified. Each group showed a significant increase in the alveolar bone height (decrease in the bone-defect depth) over time (p < 0.001). However, no statistically significant differences were detected between the Cell group and the Control group (p > 0.05). Conclusions: This study demonstrates that using autologous PDLSCs to treat periodontal intrabony defects is safe and does not produce significant adverse effects. Early spring (March - April) rainfall in Taiwan exhibits evident and distinct inter-annual and inter-decadal variability. The inter-annual varibility has a positive correlation with the El Niño/Southern Oscillation while the inter-decadal variability features a phase change beginning in the late 1970s, coherent with the major phase change in the Pacific decadal oscillation. Rainfall variability in both timescales is regulated by large-scale processes showing consistent dynamic features. Rainfall increases are associated with positive sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the tropical eastern Pacific and negative SST anomalies in the tropical central Pacific. An anomalous lower-level divergent center appears in the tropical central Pacific. Via a Rossby-wave-like response, an anomalous lower-level anticyclone appears to the southeast of Taiwan over the Philippine Sea-tropical western Pacific region, which is accompanied by an anomalous cyclone to the north-northeast of Taiwan. Both circulation anomalies induce anomalous southwesterly flows to enhance moisture flux from the South China Sea onto Taiwan, resulting in significant moisture convergence nearby Taiwan. With enhanced moisture supplied by anomalous southwesterly flows, significant rainfall increases occur in both inter-annual and inter-decadal timescales in early spring rainfall on Taiwan. Objectives: To establish a three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model of a maxillary first premolar and to evaluate the stress generated on the tooth (dentine) and on the indirect composite resin restorations by occlusal forces.Methods: An embedded intact maxillary first premolar tooth was sliced serially and scanned digitally parallel to the occlusal surface. The 64 images were assembled in a 3D FE mesh and exported to generate a 3D solid tooth model. Simulated, adhesively cemented indirect mesial-occlusal-distal (MOD) inlays of 2 mm (I1), 3 mm (I2) and 4 mm (I3) in width, and MOD onlays with occlusal cusp coverage of 2 mm (O1) and 3 mm (O2) in depth were created. The peak von Mises stress values in the five tooth models resulting from static vertical and oblique occlusal forces (300 N) were evaluated using Patran FE software.Results: The peak stress values generated by vertical occlusal force generated in dentine of I1, I2, I3, O1 and O2 restoration were 67, 32, 29, 38 and 27 MPa, respectively, and those generated by oblique occlusal force were 52, 114, 168, 54 and 55 MPa, respectively. The peak von Mises stress values in I1, I2, I3, O1 and O2 restoration subjected to oblique occlusal loading were 79, 120, 1740, 1400 and 1170 MPa, respectively.Conclusion: A 3D FE model of a maxillary first premolar was established. Simulated cemented composite resin onlay markedly reduces occlusal stress in the underlying dentine of large MOD preparation. Objective. To evaluate the impact of adalimumab (ADA) dose-halving on therapeutic responses and drug levels, the differences in drug levels among patients with different therapeutic responses and the optimal baseline cut-off ADA levels for predicting persistent remission or low disease activity (LDA) at week 24 of dose-halving therapy in 64 RA patients who had already achieved LDA or remission at baseline. Methods. Anti-ADA antibody levels were determined by bridging ELISA, ADA levels were evaluated using sandwich ELISA and therapeutic responses were assessed by the 28-joint DAS change. The optimal cut-off drug levels for predicting persistent remission were determined by receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. Results. At baseline, 25 (39.1%) and 39 (60.9%) patients had achieved remission and LDA, respectively. After 24 week ADA dose-halving, persistent remission was observed in 23 patients, remission turned LDA in 2 patients, persistent LDA in 24 patients and disease flare in 15 (23.5%) patients. Three patients who developed anti-ADA antibodies at week 24 of dose-halving had very low drug levels and disease flare. Among 61 anti-ADA antibodynegative patients, ADA levels declined by half after 24 weeks of dose-halving (median 5.5 vs 2.6 mg/ml). Baseline ADA levels were significantly higher in patients with persistent remission (median 10.5 mg/ml) or LDA (4.5 mg/ml) than in those with disease flare (0.9 µg/ml), indicating associations of ADA levels with therapeutic responses. An ADA level above the cut-off value of 6.4 mg/ml might predict persistent remission after dose-halving with high sensitivity and specificity. Conclusion. ADA dose-halving is feasible for patients who have achieved remission and sufficient drug levels. Background: To compare the efficacy of three chemotherapeutic combinations for laparoscopic hyperthermic intraperitoneal perfusion chemotherapy (HIPPC) in the treatment of malignant ascites secondary to unresectable gastric cancer (GC).Materials and Methods: From January 2010 to December 2013, 38 GC patients were randomly divided into three groups and treated by laparoscopic HIPPC with one of the three following chemotherapy combinations: raltitrexed (Ra) with oxaliplatin [trans-(±)-diaminocyclohexane oxalatoplatinum (l-OHP)], Ra with cisplatin (DDP), and Ra with mitomycin C (MMC). Perioperative complications, patients' quality of life, and survival were recorded and compared among the three groups.Results: The intraoperative course was successful in all patients, and no perioperative death or complication related to laparoscopic HIPPC was documented. The median follow-up period was 9 months, and the median survival was 7.5 months for all patients. Patients in the Ra/l-OHP group had a median survival of 8.7 months, the Ra/DDP group had a median survival of 5.6 months, and the Ra/MMC group had a median survival of 7.5 months. Patients' median survival in the Ra/l-OHP group and Ra/MMC group was significantly longer than in the Ra/DDP group (P < .05). No significant difference was found in total remission rate of ascites, increase in the Karnofsky Performance Scale, and incidence rate of port-site metastases among the three groups.Conclusions: Laparoscopy-assisted HIPPC provides modest yet encouraging efficacy for malignant ascites secondary to disseminated GC. Aims Posttranslational modification, such as phosphorylation, plays an essential role in regulating activation of endothelial NO synthase (eNOS). In the present study, we aim to determine whether eNOS could be phosphorylated and regulated by a novel serine/threonine–protein kinase Pim1 in vascular endothelial cells (ECs). Methods and results Using immunoprecipitation and protein kinase assays, we demonstrated that Pim1 specifically interacts with eNOS, which leads to a marked phosphorylation of eNOS at Ser-633 and increased production of nitric oxide (NO). Intriguingly, in response to VEGF stimulation, eNOS phosphorylation at Ser-633 exhibits two distinct phases: transient phosphorylation occurring between 0 and 60 min and sustained phosphorylation occurring between 2 and 24 h, which are mediated by the protein kinase A (PKA) and Pim1, respectively. Inhibiting Pim1 by either pharmacological inhibitor SMI-4a or the dominant-negative form of Pim1 markedly attenuates VEGF-induced tube formation, while Pim1 overexpression significantly increases EC tube formation and migration in an NO-dependent manner. Importantly, Pim1 expression and eNOS phosphorylation at Ser-633 were substantially decreased in high glucose-treated ECs and in the aorta of db/db diabetic mice. Increased Pim1 expression ameliorates impaired vascular angiogenesis in diabetic mice, as determined by an ex vivo aortic ring assay. Conclusion Our findings demonstrate Pim1 as a novel kinase that is responsible for the phosphorylation of eNOS at Ser-633 and enhances EC sprouting of aortic rings from diabetic mice, suggesting that Pim1 could potentially serve as a novel therapeutic target for revascularization strategies. The enol silanes of vinylogous esters and amides are classic dienes for Diels--Alder reactions. Here, we report their reactivity as nucleophiles in Ir-catalyzed, enantioselective allylic substitution reactions. A variety of allylic carbonates react with these nucleophiles to give allylated products in good yields with high enantioselectivities and excellent branched-to-linear ratios. These reactions occur with KF or alkoxide as the additive, but mechanistic studies suggest that these additives do not activate the enol silanes. Instead, they serve as bases to promote the cyclometalation to generate the active Ir catalyst. The carbonate anion, which was generated from the oxidative addition of the allylic carbonate, likely activates the enol silanes to trigger their activity as nucleophiles for reactions with the allyliridium electrophile. Objectives. We investigated factors associated with discontinuation of anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) therapy in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), who were anti-TNF-naïve and were given etanercept (ETN) or adalimumab (ADA). Methods. This is a retrospective nationwide population-based cohort study. We identified 1401 anti-TNF-naïve patients with AS who initiated ETN (n = 441) or ADA (n = 960) and measured the duration of anti-TNF drug use. We recorded demographic and clinical data of all patients, and calculated adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using Cox proportional hazard regression analyses. Results. Overall, the ADA and ETN groups had similar risk for drug discontinuation (HR: 0.83; 95% CI: 0.63-1.08). In each group, concomitant use of methotrexate (MTX) or a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug was associated with a lower risk of discontinuation. Subgroup analysis indicated that concomitant MTX use reduced risk of discontinuation of ADA (HR: 0.54; 95% CI: 0.40-0.74), but not ETN (HR: 1.03; 95% CI: 0.65-1.63). Conclusions. This study of anti-TNF-naïve patients with AS indicated that users of ADA and ETN had similar overall risk of drug discontinuation. In this paper, we propose a new fuzzy decision making method and propose a new fuzzy group decision making method based on the proposed likelihood-based comparison relations of hesitant fuzzy linguistic term sets. The proposed fuzzy decision making method can overcome the drawbacks of the existing methods due to the fact that they cannot distinguish the preference order of alternatives in some situations. Moreover, the proposed fuzzy group decision making method is more flexible than the existing method due to the fact that the proposed method allows experts to evaluate a fuzzy target reflecting his/her attitude for increasing the flexibility. The proposed fuzzy decision making method and the proposed fuzzy group decision making method provide us with useful ways for decision making and group decision making in fuzzy environments, respectively. Background: Current evidence shows that the CD40-CD40 ligand (CD40-CD40L) system plays a crucial role in the development, progression and outcome of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The aim of this study was to investigate whether a CD40 gene single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) is associated with SLE and CD40 expression in the Chinese population. We included controls (n = 220) and patients with either SLE (n =205) in the study. Methods: The gene polymorphism was measured using Snapshot SNP genotyping assays and confirmed by sequencing. We analyzed three single nucleotide polymorphisms of CD40 gene rs1883832C/T, rs1569723A/C and rs4810485G/T in 205 patients with SLE and 220 age-and sex-matched controls. Soluble CD40 (sCD40) levels were measured by ELISA. Results: There were significant differences in the genotype and allele frequencies of CD40 gene rs1883832C/T polymorphism between the group of patients with SLE and the control group (P < 0.05). sCD40 levels were increased in patients with SLE compared with controls (P < 0.01). Moreover, genotypes carrying the CD40 rs1883832 C/T variant allele were associated with increased CD40 levels compared to the homozygous wild-type genotype in patients with SLE. The rs1883832C/T polymorphism of CD40 and its sCD40 levels were associated with SLE in the Chinese population. Background: Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are considered responsible for the recurrence and chemoresistance of cancer. Dysregulated autophagy is highly prevalent in many types of cancer including pancreatic cancer and has been implicated in cytoprotection and tumor promotion. This study aimed to investigate the role of autophagy in regulating cancer stemness and chemoresistance of pancreatic cancer. Methods: The correlation between autophagy and CSCs and its clinical significance were analyzed using pancreatic cancer tissue microarrays. Genetic and pharmacological approaches were applied to explore the function of autophagy on CSC activity and gemcitabine resistance of pancreatic cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Results: LC3 expression positively correlated with the expression of CSC markers aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 (ALDH1), CD44, and CD133 in pancreatic cancer tissues. High coexpression of LC3/ALDH1 was associated with both poor overall survival and progression-free survival. In pancreatic cancer cell lines, higher LC3-II expression was observed in the sphere-forming cells than in the bulk cells. Blockade of autophagy by silencing ATG5, ATG7, and BECN1 or the administration of autophagy inhibitor chloroquine markedly reduced the CSC populations, ALDH1 activity, sphere formation, and resistance to gemcitabine in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, osteopontin (OPN) was found to stimulate LC3-II, ALDH1, CD44, and CD133 expression in PANC-1 cells, whereas this effect could be prevented by OPN knockdown and autophagy blockade. After treatment with various inhibitors against the major signaling pathways downstream of OPN, only the inhibitor of NF-κB activation, BAY 1170-82, could effectively counteract OPN-induced autophagy and CSC activity. According to the histochemical results, pancreatic cancer patients manifesting high levels of OPN/LC3/ALDH1 and OPN/CD44/CD133 had poor survival. Conclusions: Induction of autophagy mediated by OPN/NF-κB signaling is required for maintenance of pancreatic CSC activity. Ceramide synthases catalyze an N-acyltransferase reaction using fatty acyl-coenzyme A (CoA) and long-chain base (LCB) substrates to form the sphingolipid ceramide backbone and are targets for inhibition by the mycotoxin fumonisin B1 (FB1). Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) contains three genes encoding ceramide synthases with distinct substrate specificities: LONGEVITY ASSURANCE GENE ONE HOMOLOG1 (LOH1; At3g25540)- and LOH3 (At1g19260)-encoded ceramide synthases use very-longchain fatty acyl-CoA and trihydroxy LCB substrates, and LOH2 (At3g19260)-encoded ceramide synthase uses palmitoyl-CoA and dihydroxy LCB substrates. In this study, complementary DNAs for each genewere overexpressed to determine the role of individual isoforms in physiology and sphingolipid metabolism. Differences were observed in growth resulting from LOH1 and LOH3 overexpression compared with LOH2 overexpression. LOH1- and LOH3-overexpressing plants had enhanced biomass relative to wild-type plants, due in part to increased cell division, suggesting that enhanced synthesis of very-long-chain fatty acid/trihydroxy LCB ceramides promotes cell division and growth. Conversely, LOH2 overexpression resulted in dwarfing. LOH2 overexpression also resulted in the accumulation of sphingolipids with C16 fatty acid/dihydroxy LCB ceramides, constitutive induction of programmed cell death, and accumulation of salicylic acid, closely mimicking phenotypes observed previously in LCB C-4 hydroxylase mutants defective in trihydroxy LCB synthesis. In addition, LOH2- and LOH3-overexpressing plants acquired increased resistance to FB1, whereas LOH1-overexpressing plants showed no increase in FB1 resistance, compared with wild-type plants, indicating that LOH1 ceramide synthase is most strongly inhibited by FB1. Overall, the findings described here demonstrate that overexpression of Arabidopsis ceramide synthases results in strongly divergent physiological and metabolic phenotypes, some of which have significance for improved plant performance. In this paper, a new 3D chaotic system with five nonlinearities is introduced. The basic behaviors of the system are investigated. The dynamic evolution of the system is analyzed by bifurcation diagram, Lyapunov exponents, phase diagram. It is shown that the system generates chaos via Hopf bifurcation and period-doubling bifurcation with the parameters change. The coexisting attractors including point, periodic, chaotic attractors is presented.
