We present results on underwater electrical explosions of thin aluminum and copper foils using a generator delivering ∼200 kA current amplitude, ∼0.9 μs rise time pulses. Time-resolved shadow imaging displays the generation of a strong planar shock wave in water in the vicinity of the exploding foil. Using time-resolved spectroscopy, aluminum oxide (AlO) absorption bands were observed in a Planckian-like spectrum, indicating that aluminum combustion starts when aluminum vaporizes. The crystal violet (CV) staining technique represents a prevalent approach for the development of latent fingerprints, especially on adhesive tape surfaces. Nevertheless, the technique necessitates intricate formulations to augment its performance. In this investigation, an optimized CV staining protocol was developed, characterized by the absence of residual dye on the target substrates and the capability of facilitating fingerprint visualization under ambient light conditions. Four donors, comprising two males and two females, deposited natural fingerprints on various substrates, including glass microscope slides, aluminum foil, and 115 g glossy coated paper, without any specific guidelines. Fingerprints developed using cyanoacrylate fuming served as benchmarks and were contrasted with those generated through alternative methods: CV, ardrox, rhodamine 6G, powdering, and the optimized CV staining protocol. The fingerprint development experiment was replicated at seven distinct time intervals, encompassing 1 day, 1 week, 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, resulting in a dataset of 420 fingerprints. The evaluation of fingerprint identifiability employed a scoring system established by the Home Office Centre for Applied Science and Technology. The results indicated that the optimized CV staining technique demonstrated superior performance, boasting a 92.9% rate of identifiable fingerprint development in contrast to other employed methodologies. Consequently, this optimized CV staining approach is recommended as an efficient, rapid, and straightforward critical dyeing method, applicable to a wide array of substrates in forensic investigations. Over 200 samples from colourants appeared in 50 monuments in Iran dated back to the 11th century up to the 15th century were identified using micro‐X‐ray fluorescence (μ‐XRF), micro‐Raman spectroscopy (μ‐Raman), polarized light microscopy (PLM), and scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive X‐ray spectrometry (SEM‐EDS). Whereas red ochre, red lead, vermilion, and an organic red dye were identified as red colourants, ultramarine blue, azurite, and indigo were the blue colourants occurred in the wall decorations. In addition, atacamite was the only green pigment identified on the wall paintings and stucco decorations, and carbon black was identified as black pigment. We also show that gold leaf and tin foil have been used in gilding decorations. Furthermore, we were able to discern yellow ochre together with orpiment, natrojarosite, and crocoite in a number of architectural decorations. Moreover, we show that huntite and gypsum are used as white preparation layer of the wall decorations in Iran. Periods of emergence of particular pigments have been discussed and regional preferences in the use of certain pigments are argued. The detection of nitrosamine impurities, particularly small dialkyl types, which are frequently known to be potent mutagenic carcinogens, in some Sartan group active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and finished drug products caused global regulatory organizations to have concerns. Accordingly, Registration Holders/Applicants, API manufacturers, and their raw material suppliers are required to check the presence of nitrosamines in their products and carry out risk assessments using the quality risk management principles specified in the ICH Q9 guide. In this context, a new LC-MS/MS method has been developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of NDMA, NDEA, NMBA, NDIPA, NEIPA, NDBA, and MeNP nitrosamine compounds in API and finished products as well as in primary packaging materials, one of the risk sources. This validated method was applied to check the nitrosamine content may occur from canister, blister, printed aluminum foil, nasal spray, and eye drop packaging materials as part of the Extractables & Leachables studies arising from interactions between the product and the primary packaging. Common kitchen wraps like plastic and aluminum foil create significant environmental burdens. Plastic wrap, typically made from non-renewable fossil fuels, often ends up in landfills for centuries, breaking down into harmful microplastics. Aluminum foil, while effective, requires a large amount of energy to produce, and recycling it at home can be impractical due to food residue. A promising new alternative, low-nitrosamine rubber wrap film, aims to reduce waste by offering a reusable option compared to traditional single-use plastic wrap. The film is environmentally friendly, durable, and effective in sealing containers and keeping food fresh or crispy. The raw materials used to make the product were studied, namely fresh and concentrated natural rubber latex. No nitrosamines were found in either the fresh or concentrated latex, which is important as nitrosamines are known to be carcinogenic. The absence of nitrosamines in the raw materials suggests that the universal rubber wrap film is safe for use. In this study, the rubber formulation and properties of rubber used to make rubber wrap film were studied. The content of additives affecting the rubber properties was varied to find the optimum rubber formulation for making rubber wrap films. The rubber formulation with the least amount of chemicals that met the following criteria was selected: tensile strength of at least 15 MPa, elongation at break of at least 600%, and nitrosamine content below 6 ppm. It was found experimentally that the optimum rubber formulation for making a translucent rubber film had 0.7 phr zinc oxide and 1.0 phr sulfur. Performance tests revealed the rubber wrap film's superior sealing capabilities. Its elasticity allows for a tighter fit on containers, effectively conforming to various shapes and creating an optimal seal compared to plastic wrap and aluminum foil. Electromagnetic welding, also referred to as magnetic pulse welding, is a solid-state welding method utilized for joining two distinct materials through high velocity impact. The direct fusion of stainless steel with titanium poses various difficulties owing to the absence of metallurgical compatibility and the occurrence of brittle intermetallic compounds such as FeTi and CrTi. To tackle these challenges, a sustainable, low heat input method like impact welding was applied to address the metallurgical compatibility of the two metals. In this study, a new technique involving aluminum foil, silver foil, and nitinol powder as intermediary materials was investigated to establish a fresh bimetallic structure between Ti-SS304L. Thorough analysis of microstructures, interface formations, and reactions was conducted using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The outcomes showcased successful prevention of intermetallic phase formation through the incorporation of these intermediary materials. Microhardness measurements indicated the absence of brittle FeTi and CrTi phases at the welding interface. Additionally, the weld interface was observed to be situated amid two intermetallic layers at the Ti-SS304L interface, ensuring resistance against corrosion. This inventive method not only averted the creation of harmful intermetallic compounds but also bolstered the overall strength and corrosion resilience of the joint between titanium and stainless steel. [Display omitted] This study presents a novel Aluminium foil-based electrode characterized by its affordability, flexibility, and ease of modification with carboxylic moiety-containing organic molecules. Upon foil modification with Aluminium nanoparticles and EDTA (AlNP-EDTA/AlE), the modified electrode exhibits remarkable activity in the oxidation of lead at potentials around −0.4 V. The lead signal is derived from the oxidation of lead deposited on the electrode surface using anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV). The addition of EDTA to AlNP/AlE increased the anodic peak current of lead by more than 500 %. The surface characterization of the electrode was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and infrared spectroscopy (IR), while its electroactive properties were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Optimal operating parameters include pH 2.1, square-wave voltammetry (SWV) with an accumulation time of 60 s and an accumulation potential of −0.8 V. A low detection limit of 0.20 µmol/L and a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 3.0 % were achieved using five different electrodes. Friction stir lap welding experiments between 6061 aluminum alloy plate and DP590 dual-phase steel plate were carried out. The effects of welding parameters and addition of Ni foil interlayers with different thickness on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the lap joints were investigated. The shear strength of the joint reached the maximum value of 6597 N and showed a mixed ductile-brittle fracture mode when the welding speed, the rotating speed and the thickness of the Ni foil intermediate layer were set to 100 mm/min, 900 rpm and 0.3 mm, respectively. A certain amount of beneficial plastic AlNi and FeNi3 intermetallic compounds are formed through the reaction of Al, Fe and Ni at the aluminum alloy/steel interface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To characterize an electron beam, visible synchrotron light is often used and dedicated beamlines at synchrotron sources are becoming a more common feature as instruments and methods for the diagnostics are, along with the accelerators, further developed. At KARA (Karlsruhe Research Accelerator), such a beamline exists and is based on a typical infrared/visible-light configuration. From experience at such beamlines no significant radiation was expected (dose rates larger than 0.5 µSv h-1). This was found not to be the case and a higher dose was measured which fortunately could be shielded to an acceptable level with 0.3 mm of aluminium foil or 2.0 mm of Pyrex glass. The presence of this radiation led to further investigation by both experiment and calculation. A custom setup using a silicon drift detector for energy-dispersive spectroscopy (Ketek GmbH) and attenuation experiments showed the radiation to be predominantly copper K-shell fluorescence and is confirmed by calculation. The measurement of secondary radiation from scattering of synchrotron and other radiation, and its calculation, is important for radiation protection, and, although a lot of experience exists and methods for radiation protection are well established, changes in machine, beamlines and experiments mean a constant appraisal is needed. Surface acoustic wave spectroscopy has been established as non‐destructive and fast method for characterization of mechanical properties of surfaces and bulk materials in both research and industry. The present work shows that by application of a novel and robust aluminum nitride (AlN) coated piezoelectric contact sensor the advantages of the method can be extended from room temperature to at least 600°C. An overview of sensor concepts and applications of the method is discussed first, followed by theoretical and practical considerations for design and coating of a novel temperature stable contact sensor. After fabrication of such a sensor using magnetron sputtering, it was tested in a modified surface acoustic wave spectroscopy setup with an incorporated heating table concerning signal amplitude and frequency range. The AlN coated sensor was found to perform well up to 600°C, with temperature limited by the specification of the heating table. At room temperature, performance was acceptable when compared with a conventional contact sensor using a PVDF piezoelectric foil. Application of the high temperature capabilities of the setup was demonstrated by measuring temperature stability of hydrogen‐free amorphous carbon coatings (a‐C and ta‐C) depending on their sp3 carbon ratio. In another example, high precision temperature dependent measurement of Young's modulus for ultrasonic fatigue test specimen was taken, achieving an accuracy better than 1%. A composite material composed of anodized aluminum oxide (AAO), carbon (C), and magnesium oxide (MgO) was developed for CO2 capture applications. Inspired by the bryophyte organism, the AAO/C/MgO composite mirrors two primary features of these species—(1) morphological characteristics and (2) elemental composition—specifically carbon, oxygen, and magnesium. The synthesis process involved two sequential steps: electroanodization of aluminum foil followed by a hydrothermal method using a mixture of glucose and magnesium chloride (MgCl2). The concentration of MgCl2 was systematically varied as the sole experimental variable across five levels—1 mM, 2 mM, 3 mM, 4 mM, and 5 mM—to investigate the impact of MgO formation on the samples' chemical and physical properties, and consequently, their CO2 capture efficiency. Thus, scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed the AAO substrate's porous structure, with pore diameters measuring 250 ± 30 nm. The growth of MgO on the AAO substrate resulted in spherical structures, whose diameter expanded from 15 nm ± 3 nm to 1000 nm ± 250 nm with increasing MgCl2 concentration from the minor to major concentrations explored, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that carbon serves as a linking agent between AAO and MgO within the composite. Notably, the composite synthesized with a 4 mM MgCl2 concentration exhibited the highest CO2 capture efficiency, as determined by UV-Vis absorbance studies using a sodium carbonate solution as the CO2 source. This efficiency was quantified with a 'k' constant of 0.10531, significantly higher than those of other studied samples. The superior performance of the 4 mM MgCl2 sample in CO2 capture is likely due to the optimal density of MgO structures formed on the sample's surface, enhancing its adsorptive capabilities as suggested by the XPS results. This study aims to explore the potential application of hollow glass beads (HGB) compounded with graphene oxide (GO, HGB@GO) to improve the mechanical properties of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF). This HGB@GO/RPUF composite is considered a potential filler for reinforcing aluminum honeycomb (AH). A characterization of the chemical structure and surface morphology of HGB@GO was conducted, as well as the analysis of its effect on the compression properties of the foam. The compressive strength of HGB@GO/RPUF (4 wt. %) is 146.17% higher than that of pure RPUF. This study also compared the deformation modes of AH and foam-filled honeycomb (F-AH) structure under axial crushing. The interaction effects between the foam and AH were also analyzed. The results indicated that the RPUF improves the compressive capacity and deformation stability of the AH through its good compression properties and interaction with the aluminum foil. The use of HGB@GO/RPUF further enhances the energy absorption characteristics of the F-AH. In comparison with the pure RPUF-AH, the total and specific energy absorption of the HGB@GO/RPUF (4 wt. %)-AH increase by 74.65% and 44.98%, respectively. This work demonstrates that the prepared HGB@GO can enhance the mechanical properties of RPUF, and HGB@GO/RPUF-AH is expected to be a desirable energy-absorbing device. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Metallic Foil Friction Stir Welding (MFFSW) was newly developed from the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) technique. Magnesium (Mg) alloys were the most trending alloys in the aerospace, automobile, and biomedical industries. This study aims to investigate the variation in mechanical, corrosive, microstructural, and fractographic properties of MFFSW as a process innovation when compared with FSW. The metallic foil of pure manganese (Mn) with a thickness of 500 μm was inserted between two AZ61 Mg alloys. The tensile strength, impact strength, and hardness were noted as mechanical properties of the output. Potentiodynamic corrosion tests were performed to reveal the corrosion properties. An optical microscope was used to examine a distinct transverse section of the weld. Fractography tests with scanning electron microscopic analysis were conducted on destructive tensile specimens. The ultimate tensile strength, impact energy, yield strength, and microhardness increased to 16%, 32%, 12%, and 19.17%, respectively, compared to FSW. MMFSW shows a lower elongation of up to 33% than FSW. MMFSW (9.61 mm/A) shows a lower corrosion rate than FSW (11.02 mm/A), which employs improved corrosion properties. Optical microscopy images of the stir zone in both MFFSW and FSW revealed that adding a Mn alloying element improved grain growth uniformity and eliminated unexpected grain growth patterns. Hence, the experiment's conclusion shows that MFFSW has the edge over FSW for mechanical and corrosion properties. Thus, the Mn strip improves the properties of MFFSW. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses the progress made in the enantioselective total synthesis of γ-rubromycin, a Streptomyces antibiotic. The researchers previously reported a successful photoirradiation method using a chiral, non-racemic 1,2-naphthoquinone to produce an enantioenriched spiroacetal. However, in their latest study, they found that the viability of the photochemical reaction depended on the chromophore structure of the quinones. They also observed that the color of the quinones correlated with their reactivity, with yellow or orange quinones being reactive and red or dark red-purple quinones being unreactive. Further studies are being conducted to gain insights into the photoreaction viability and guide substrate design for the synthesis of γ-rubromycin. [Extracted from the article]

The study focuses on transforming Sajor-caju mushrooms into snack foods through frying and flavoring. The main objective is to examine how different packaging formats impact the quality of seasoned fried mushroom products. The process involves steaming and drying the mushrooms until the moisture content is below 6 %. Subsequently, the mushrooms are fried in a vacuum fryer at 115 °C under a vacuum pressure of 620 mm Hg for 5 min. The mushrooms obtained were developed into herb-flavored fried mushrooms according to the recipe and method from the model farm project, Than To District, Yala Province of Thailand. The products were packed in 3 different packaging formats; in PP bags (control sample), in polypropylene plastic bags containing oxygen absorber (PP+O2 absorber), and in aluminum foil bags (AL), stored at room temperature, 29±2 °C for 90 days. The study revealed that different packaging formats resulted in the seasoned fried mushroom product in the color value (L* a* b*), aw value, moisture content, TBA value, total microbial and fungal counts, and sensory acceptance score (p < 0.05) with statistical significance. From the results, it could be concluded that packing in polypropylene plastic bags could store the product for 30 days, and products packed in PP+O2 absorber could maintain an acceptable sensory quality similar to the one newly prepared for up to 45 days. Packing in aluminum foil bags was the most suitable packing format. It could maintain the product quality in physical, chemical, microbial, and sensory properties for up to 75 days while the product still conformed to the Community Product Standard (303/2004). The İmren Erşen Oya Museum, located in Eskişehir, Turkey, is the first museum in the Central Anatolian Region dedicated to textiles. Flexible CdTe solar cells integrated onto polyimide foils are a promising renewable power generation technology. Optimizing crystal structure and reducing grain boundary recombination by CdCl 2 annealing are the key approaches to increase carrier concentration and improve device performance. However, the inherent thermal constraints of polyimide substrates limit the feasibility of achieving full annealing. In response, we introduce a novel two-stage annealing process: a primary recrystallization at 350 °C followed by a secondary recrystallization at 380 °C. Employing a rigorous investigation of surface and interface energy minimization, strain energy minimization, and the growth kinetics of Cl drag phenomena, this method induces significant secondary grain growth, surpassing the film thickness itself. The culmination of these efforts yields an extraordinary power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 12.2 %, marking a historic achievement for sputtered CdTe solar cells on polyimide substrates. This study not only unveils a pioneering approach to grain boundary engineering but also offers insights into optimizing the CdCl 2 annealing process for CdTe absorbers, ultimately facilitating the realization of high-efficiency, flexible CdTe solar cells. Next‐generation, high‐efficiency energy storage and conversion systems require development of lithium metal batteries. But the high cost of production and constraints on thickness of lithium (anode) foils continue to limit adoption for integration into battery cell architectures. Here, a novel lithium anode manufacturing solution is demonstrated – single‐step production of ultrathin gauge foil formats directly from solid ingot. Hybrid cutting‐based deformation processes, involving large plastic strains and strain rates, produce foil to sub‐10 µm thickness, with surface quality even superior to present Li anode processing routes. Energy analysis shows the single‐stage processing is ≈50% more efficient than conventional processing by extrusion‐rolling. Through in situ force measurements and high‐speed imaging of the cutting it also characterize – for the first time – the flow stress of Li to strain rates of 800 sec−1, revealing a power‐law relationship. This study centers on indium‐ion solid‐state batteries. Indium is a soft metal that provides excellent adhesion and does not generate dendrites during the charge–discharge process. The solid‐state electrolyte material, sodium‐based silicate, is an environmentally friendly material that offers better thermal stability compared to liquid electrolytes and reduces packaging requirements. The positive electrode material, a graphite film (GF), features a layered structure, enabling the stable insertion and extraction of ions. In this experiment, graphite film doped sodium phosphate (GFN) are used as positive electrodes, sodium‐based silicate powder through cloth deposition (battery cloth deposition [BCD]) is used as the electrolyte and indium is used as the negative electrode. To improve the low capacity of indium electrodes, indium is alloyed with silver and prepared by thermal evaporation method. The results show that the In‐30Ag with Cu substrate (weight ratio of In‐30 wt.% Ag) exhibits higher cycling capacity (61 mAhg−1). To further increase the capacity, the substrate of In‐30Ag is replaced from copper foil to aluminum foil. According to result, the capacity of In‐30Ag with Al substrate (91 mAhg−1) exhibits 1.6 times higher compared to In‐30Ag with Cu substrate. However, In‐30Ag with Al substrate after vacuum heat treatment, the thin film exhibits melting and agglomeration, leading to a decrease in capacity. Thus, the unheated In‐30Ag (Al substrate)/2×BCD/GFN system is subjected to large‐area module testing using an industrial fan as the load, confirming its practical applications. The tribological behavior of traditional oil-in-water (O/W) lubricants (1.0 wt.%) and nano-TiO2 additive lubricants (1.0–9.0 wt.%) during micro rolling of titanium foils were analyzed. In this study, the surface morphologies of titanium foils under various lubrication conditions were assessed, and the corresponding lubrication mechanisms were revealed. The tribological behavior of nano-TiO2 additive lubricants during micro rolling of titanium foils was also explored through a series of characterization methods. The utilization of nano-TiO2 additive lubricants in micro rolling reduces the surface roughness of titanium foils. Moreover, it effectively inhibits the generation of indentations and cracks during rolling processes, enhancing the surface quality of rolled specimens. Additionally, owing to the synergism of rolling, tribo-film, mending and polishing effects of the nanoparticles, both the rolling force and surface roughness were minimized by using lubricants containing 3.0 wt.% TiO2 nanoparticles. Overall, an optimal concentration (3.0 wt.%) of TiO2 nanoparticles in water-based nanolubricants was obtained with enhanced tribological properties and lubrication performance during micro rolling of titanium foils. Enhancement of proton energy has always been a key aspect addressed via laser-driven proton acceleration. As the target normal sheath acceleration protons are driven by the electric field produced at the target rear surface, the presence of a gold nanolayer on the surface of the target foil will enhance the energy of accelerated ion beams. In our study, we used a 30 fs laser pulse with a wavelength of 800 nm and a peak intensity of 3 × 10 20 W / cm 2 . The targets were 2 μm thick aluminum foils coated with a 10–20 nm layer of gold (Au). It was observed that the dynamics of proton acceleration from the foil target is a function of the position of the nanolayer (front or rear surface). 2D particle-in-cell simulation was also performed in support of the observed experimental results. A novel design method based on a novel origami process that can create a solid structure swiftly and at a low cost is presented for rectangular waveguide-type microwave devices in this paper. A planar structure was fabricated by the lamination and laser cutting of polystyrene membranes and aluminum foils and was converted into a solid structure via origami in accordance with the selective absorption of infrared light. A rectangular waveguide, a rectangular waveguide-type coupler, and a power divider based on an origami structure with a multi-layer structure and a single-layer structure were fabricated and tested, demonstrating easy assembly and good microwave performance. The measured results of the rectangular waveguide indicated that the insertion loss was superior to −0.9 dB. Meanwhile, the results of the coupler showed that the coupling degree increased from −12.8 dB to −8.9 dB in the range of 11.0 GHz to 12.0 GHz. Correspondingly, the prepared power divider demonstrated that the return loss dwindled from −8.9 dB to −11.3 dB and that the insertion loss of one output port was approximate to that of the remaining one, varying between −3.5 dB and −5.2 dB in the range of 10.5 GHz to 11.5 GHz—verifying the effectiveness of the origami-based design method. Electrospinning is a versatile technique for fabricating nanofibrous scaffolds for tissue engineering applications. However, the direct formation of 3D sponges through electrospinning has previously not been reproducible. We used a Taguchi experimental design approach to optimise the electrospinning parameters for forming PCL and PCL/gelatine 3D sponges. The following parameters were investigated to improve sponge formation: solution concentration, humidity, and solution conductivity. Pure PCL sponges were achievable. However, a much fluffier sponge formed by increasing the solution conductivity with gelatine. The optimal conditions for sponge formation 24 w/v% 80:20 PCL:gelatine on aluminium foil at ≥70% humidity, 15 cm, 22 kV and 1500 µL/h. The resulting sponge had a highly porous structure with a fibre diameter of ~1 µm. They also supported significantly higher cell viability than 2D electrospun mats, dropcast films of the same material and even the TCP positive control. Our study demonstrates that the direct formation of PCL/gelatine 3D sponges through electrospinning is feasible and promising for tissue engineering applications. The sponges have a highly porous structure and support cell viability, which are essential properties for tissue engineering scaffolds. The contact state of a seamless internal threaded copper tube and an aluminium foil fin not only affects the heat transfer efficiency of a tube–fin heat exchanger but also seriously affects its service life. In this study, hydraulic expansion technology was used to connect the copper tube with an internal thread with a 7 mm diameter to the fin of the heat exchanger. The influence of the expansion pressure and pressure holding time on the contact state was analysed through experiments and finite element simulation, and the variation law of the two on the contact state was obtained. The contact state was characterised by the contact gap and contact area. In order to obtain the specific contact area value, a new method of measuring the contact area was developed to reveal the variation in contact area between the copper tube and the fin after expansion. The results show that the contact gap decreases with an increase in expansion pressure, while the pressure holding time remains the same. The contact area increases with an increase in expansion pressure, and the rate of increase slows. When the expansion pressure is 18 MPa, the average contact gap is approximately 0.018 mm. When the expansion pressure reaches 16 MPa, the contact area ratio is 91.0%. When the expansion pressure increases to 18 MPa, the contact area ratio only increases by approximately 0.6%. Compared with the influence of the expansion pressure on the increase in contact area, the influence of the pressure holding time on the contact area is lower. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of high-albedo roof materials is a simple and effective way to reduce roof temperature, conserve electricity required for air conditioning, and ease power shortages. In this study, three common cooling roof materials, namely, white elastomeric acrylic (AC) paint, a white thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) membrane, and an aluminum foil composite film-covered styrene-butadiene-styrene bituminous (SBS) membranes, were chosen to conduct a nearly 4-yr experiment in Nanjing, China, to study the difference in surface temperatures (ΔTs) between the cooling roof materials and concrete. The results showed that even during heatwaves, ΔTs was only 2.18C (AC), 3.88C (TPO), and 7.08C (SBS) on average and 6.98-18.28C to the greatest extent, which was far less than those reported by many studies. The intensity of solar radiation where the cooling roof material is used and the roof material's albedo contribute to the difference in ΔTs. The initial albedo of the AC was 0.53 and dropped to 0.16 due to rapid aging, which is close to that of concrete, in less than 3 months. The albedo of TPO and SBS dropped to 0.16 after 9 and 4.7 years, respectively. Further, SBS is the optimal choice in terms of cost and performance, costing only USD 0.67 m-2 yr-1. However, its albedo exhibits seasonal fluctuations and is significantly affected by air pollution. In particular, particulate matter settles on the surface, thereby decreasing the albedo. Electrolytic copper foil stands as a pivotal material in the electronics industry. Anode materials are extensively utilized in the processing of electrolytic copper foils. Given the intricate production conditions of copper foils, there are multifarious factors contributing to the failure of titanium anodes. Presently, there is comprehensive research into the failure mechanisms of titanium anodes under actual complex operational conditions. This paper addresses gaps by juxtaposing failed and new titanium anodes from a copper foil manufacturing facility. It analyzes the macroscopic and microscopic morphological alterations, elemental distribution, and phase composition changes in titanium anodes before and after failure. Ga2O3 is an emerging wide‐bandgap semiconductor with high deep ultraviolet absorption, tunable persistent photoconductivity, and excellent stability toward electric fields, making it a promising component for neuromorphic visual systems (NVSs). However, Ga2O3‐based photosensors with high responsivity and long response decay times are required for efficient NVSs. A solution‐processed doping strategy for fabrication of Ga2O3 is proposed with tin foil as a dopant source. Tin‐doped Ga2O3 (Ga2O3:Sn) photosensors are obtained with ultrahigh responsivity and extremely long response decay times. These behaviors are attributed to substitutional tin and oxygen vacancies that modulate defect‐related hole trapping. High‐performance Ga2O3:Sn photosensors can mimic photonic synaptic behaviors and image pre‐processing functions. NVSs based on a Ga2O3:Sn photonic synapse array perform pattern recognition with an accuracy of 97.3% under an unprecedented low‐light pulse stimuli of 0.5 µW cm−2. This work provides a low‐cost solution‐processed approach to ultrasensitive Ga2O3:Sn NVSs and will facilitate developments in artificial intelligence technology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work investigates the potential synthesis of cost-effective polyaluminum chloride (PACl) coagulant from waste household aluminum foil and utilization for treating petroleum wastewater (PWW), especially dissolved organic compounds (DOC, like octanol–water mixture) and nonsettleable suspended (NSS-kaolin) mineral particles. Based on the Standard Practice for Coagulation–Flocculation Jar Test, the efficiency of PACl for DOC and NSS removal was evaluated in relation to the effects of the operational parameters. The results demonstrated that the as-prepared PACl has an amorphous morphology with a Keggin-type e-Al13 molecular structure {Na[AlO4(OH)24(H2O)]·xH2O and good thermal stability up to 278 °C. PACl coagulant also exhibited a higher efficiency for NSS removal than DOC by around 1.5- to 1.9-fold under broad pH (5–7), while a higher acidic/alkaline pH disrupts the sweep floc formation. An increased PACl dosage (over 25 mg/L) also caused a decrease in the coagulation efficiency by 11.7% due to Al species' transformation and pH depression (from 6.8 to 4.9) via increased PACl hydrolysis. With a fast rotating speed of 280 rpm for 2 min, the minimum dose of PACl (10–25 mg/L) can maximize the removal efficiency of NSS (~98%) and DOC (~69%) at pH 6.5 ± 0.5 and 35 °C after 30 min of settling time. Treating actual saline PWW samples (salinity up to 187.7 g/L) also verified the high efficacy of PACl coagulation performance in reducing the turbidity and dissolved hydrocarbons by more than 75.5% and 67.7%, respectively. Each year, the phosphate industries in Morocco discard over 20 million tons of phosphogypsum into the Atlantic Ocean, posing a significant threat to aquatic life and causing potential long-term damage to ecosystems due to the accumulation of harmful substances. Hence, developing eco-friendly and cost-effective strategies to valorize phosphogypsum is vital to protect ecosystems and human health. This study aims to provide a concrete and efficient strategy for exploiting phosphogypsum and aluminum wastes in the preparation of hydrocalumite using the co-precipitation method. The synthesis strategy's effectiveness was assessed through a comprehensive analysis of the phosphogypsum-based hydrocalumite using various techniques, including FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy-Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) analysis, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). In addition, the structure was refined to discuss the arrangement of the polyhedrons occupied by the different ions in the hydrocalumite framework. It was found that the phosphogypsum-based hydrocalumite exhibited chemical and structural properties comparable to those of conventionally synthesized hydrocalumite, suggesting its potential applicability in diverse fields, including catalysis, cement and concrete production, polymer additives, medicine, and environmental remediation. Overall, in this work, the Moroccan phosphogypsum and aluminum wastes proved to be effective precursors of hydrocalumite, with structural and chemical properties presumably close to the conventional hydrocalumite. Premise: A comparison of methods using different materials to exclude light from stems to prevent stem CO2 exchange (i.e., photosynthesis), without affecting stem conductance to water vapor, surface temperature, and relative humidity, was conducted on stems of avocado trees in California. Methods and Results: The experiment featured three materials: aluminum foil, paper‐based wrap, and mineral‐based paint. We examined stem CO2 exchange with and without the light exclusion treatments. We also examined stem surface temperature, relative humidity, and photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) under the cover materials. All materials reduced PAR and stem CO2 exchange. However, aluminum foil reduced stem surface temperature and increased relative humidity. Conclusions: Methods used to study stem CO2 exchange through light exclusion have historically relied on methods that may induce experimental artifacts. In this study, a multi-pad bump-type foil thrust bearing with a taper-land height profile is investigated. A detailed thermo-elastohydrodynamic (TEHD) finite element (FE) model is used comprising all bearing pads instead of only a single pad. Although the single-pad reduction approach is commonly applied, it can not accurately account for the different temperatures, loads, and power losses for individual pads in the case of misalignment. The model accounts for the deformations of the foils on each pad via a Reissner-Mindlin-type shell model. Deformations of the rotor are calculated via the Navier-Lamé equations with thermoelastic stresses and centrifugal effects. The temperature of the top foil and the rotor are calculated with the use of heat diffusion equations. The temperature of each lubricating air film is obtained through a 3D energy equation. Film pressures are calculated with the 2D compressible Reynolds equation. Moreover, the surrounding of the bearing and runner disk is part of the thermodynamic model. Results indicate that the thermal bending of the runner disk as well as top foil sagging are key factors in performance reduction. Due to the bump-type understructure, the top foil sagging effect is observed in simulation results. A 76-year-old man visited our hospital complaining of pain during defecation. Rectal examination revealed an anal fissure at the 6 o'clock position. Sharp induration was suggested. The anus was highly tense owing to pain, and anoscopy confirmed the anal fissure at the 6 o'clock position. He was conservatively treated with anal ointment and analgesics and was followed up 1 week later, during which time the pain did not improve. Therefore, rectal endoscopy was performed because it was suggested that there was a fish bone stuck in the anus, resulting in the formation of a localized abscess near the anal crypt. There was a press-through pack (PTP) measuring approximately 2 cm in diameter above the anal canal, and a deep fissure had formed. The PTP was extracted using a recovery net. There was no mediastinal emphysema or free air on computed tomography, and the symptoms improved with conservative treatment. PTP is a form of drug packaging with aluminum foil and vinyl chloride, and gastrointestinal damage due to accidental ingestion is often reported, but it rarely reaches the rectum intact. The characteristics of internal short circuits (ISC) play a critical role in determining the thermal runaway behaviors and associated hazards of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, due to safety concerns and limitations in operando characterization at high state-of-charges (SoCs), the fundamental understanding of stress-driven ISCs under high SOC situations (above 30%) is still lacking. In this study, combined post-mortem characterization and multiphysics modeling is employed to clarify the evolution of ISC modes in LIBs with high SOCs. These findings reveal that the triggered ISC mode is SOC-dependent, with the Al current collector (Al)-Anode coating (An) mode dominant in high SOC situations. Experimentally obtained ISC resistance for the specified ISC mode is then assigned to the corresponding ISC region in the established multiphysics model, allowing for accurate coupling of the electromechanical relationship and prediction of mechanical-electrical-thermal responses of the LIB. Finally, a simple yet effective approach is proposed for avoiding the Al-An mode after battery fractures, achieved through surface notches on electrodes. Results discover novel phenomena for ISC in high SOC cells and reveal the underlying mechanisms, highlighting the importance and potential of battery structural design for developing next-generation robust batteries. Pipelines remain the safest means of transporting natural gas and petroleum products. Nonetheless, the pipeline infrastructure in the US is facing major challenges, especially in terms of corrosion of steel/metallic pipes and excavation damage of onshore pipelines (leading to oil spills, explosions, and deaths). Corrosion of metallic pipelines can be avoided by using non-corrosive materials such as plastic pipes for low-pressure applications and glass-fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite pipes for transporting high-pressure oil and natural gas. However, buried non-metallic pipelines are not easily detectable, which can lead to increased excavation damage during construction and rehabilitation work. Alternative strategies for making buried non-metallic pipes easily locatable using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) were investigated in this study. Results from this study have shown that using carbon fabric or an aluminum foil overlay on non-metallic pipes before burying in soil significantly increases the reflected GPR signal amplitude, thereby making it easier to locate such pipelines. The reflected GPR signal amplitude for pipe sections with carbon fabric or aluminum foil overlays was found to have increased by a factor of up to 4.5 over the control samples. The results also highlight the importance of selecting the appropriate antenna frequency for GPR surveys, since wet silt loam soil and clay significantly reduce the penetration depths of the radar signals produced by the GPR antennae. With rapid urbanization and global population growth, the amount of wasted aluminum foil is significantly increasing. Most deformed and contaminated foil is difficult to recycle; hence, it is landfilled or incinerated, causing environmental pollution. Therefore, using aluminum foil waste for electricity may be conducive to addressing environmental problems. In this regard, various literatures have explored the concept of energy generation using foil, while a crumple ball design for this purpose has not been studied. Thus, a recycled foil‐based crumpled ball triboelectric nanogenerator (RFCB‐TENG) is proposed. The crumpled ball design can minimize the effects of contamination on foil, ensuring efficient power output. Moreover, owing to novel crumpled design, the RFCB‐TENG has some outstanding characteristics to become a sustainable power source, such as ultralight weight, low noise, and high durability. By introducing the air‐breakdown model, the RFCB‐TENG achieved an output peak voltage of 648 V, a current of 8.1 mA cm3, and an optimum power of 162.7 mW cm3. The structure of the RFCB‐TENG is systemically optimized depending on the design parameters to realize the optimum output performance. Finally, the RFCB‐TENG operated 500 LEDs and 30‐W commercial lamps. The 0.05 mm-thick 304 stainless steel foil was annealed within the temperature range from 950℃-1100℃ for 10 minutes to obtain different microstructures. And micro-deep drawing experiments of stainless steel foils with different tissue structures were conducted to obtain relevant material forming properties influenced by dimensional effects. On this basis, the influence of the microstructure characteristics on the forming performance of 304 stainless steel foil and the quality of the cup formed by using micro-drawing was studied, and its mechanism was discussed. It can be seen from the results that the stainless steel foil annealed at 950℃ exhibits poor forming performance, and the wrinkle phenomenon of the deep-drawn cup is obvious. At the annealing temperature of 1050℃, the quality of the deep drawing cup is significantly improved. When the annealing temperature reaches 1100℃, with the increase of the annealing temperature, the crystal grains size increase sharply, and the coarse-grain effect causes the uneven plastic deformation effect to be obvious. Besides, the drawing quality is obviously deteriorated. The observation of the microstructure of the deep drawing cup shows that the forming effect of the drawing cup is poor due to the rolling defects and the coarse grain effect. When stiffened deep mixed (SDM) columns are used to support embankments over soft soil, the embankment stability becomes one of the major concerns for geotechnical engineers. However, limit studies have been focused on failure of SDM columns under embankment load. This paper conducted a series of scale-reduced model tests to investigate stability of embankment over soft soils with SDM columns, including columns installed under the embankment base, and columns installed only under the embankment crest and the embankment side slope, respectively. A load system consisting of six loading plates was designed to create a uniform surcharge on the embankment crest. An aluminum foil tape was implanted into each core pile in a row to detect the model column failure during surcharge loading, as its electric resistance becomes infinity when the tape was broken due to the rupture of column. With the increase in the surcharge, the failure mode and process of SDM column were analyzed based on the peak stress on the top of column and strain difference along column length and the electric resistance change of aluminum foil tape. The test results showed that the SDM columns under the embankment crest also had effects on enhancing the embankment stability, even though the slip plane may not pass through them. With the increase in surcharge, the SDM columns failed progressively and had possible failure under compression, a combination of compression and bending, and bending depending on locations of the columns under embankment. Brominated butyl rubber (BIIR) is a derivative of butyl rubber, with the advantage of high physical strength, good vibration damping performance, low permeability, aging resistance, weather resistance, etc. However, it is hard to avoid BIIR fiber sticking together due to serious swelling or merging, resulting in few studies on BIIR electrospinning. In this work, brominated butyl rubber membrane (mat) with BIIR microfiber has been prepared by electrospinning. The spinnability of elastomer BIIR has been explored. The factors influencing the morphology of BIIR microfiber membranes have been studied, including solvent, electrospinning parameters, concentration, and the rheological property of electrospinning solution. The optimal parameters for electrospinning BIIR have been obtained. A BIIR membrane with the ideal microfiber morphology has been obtained, which can be peeled from aluminum foil on a collector easily without being broken. Anti-bacterial property, the electrical conductivity of these membranes, and the mechanical properties of these samples were studied. The optimized BIIR electrospinning solution is Bingham fluid. The results of these experiments show that a BIIR membrane can be used in the field of medical prevention, wearable electronics, electronic skin, and in other fields that require antibacterial functional polymer materials. At the ReAccelerator within the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, a combination of an interchangeable aluminum foil and a silicon detector was developed to quantify isobaric contamination in rare isotope beams. The device is simple to operate and is now used routinely. In this article, we describe the system and show an application of the device to determine the level of contamination of an Si-32 rare isotope beam by stable S-32. In this work, a storage study was conducted to find suitable packaging material for tomato powder storage. Experiments were laid out in a single factor completely randomized design (CRD) to study the effect of packaging materials on lycopene, vitamin C moisture content, and water activity of tomato powder; The factor (packaging materials) has three levels (low‐density polyethylene bag, polypropylene bottle, wrapped with aluminum foils, and packed in low‐density polyethylene bag) and is replicated three times. During the study, a twin layer solar tunnel dried tomato slices of var. Galilea was used. The dried tomato slices were then ground and packed (40 g each) in the packaging materials and stored at room temperature. Samples were drawn from the packages at 2‐month interval for quality analysis and SAS (version 9.2) software was used for statistical analysis. From the result, higher retention of lycopene (80.13%) and vitamin C (49.32%) and a nonsignificant increase in moisture content and water activity were observed for tomato powder packed in polypropylene bottles after 6 months of storage. For low‐density polyethylene packed samples and samples wrapped with aluminum foil and packed in a low‐density polyethylene bag, 57.06% and 60.45% lycopene retention and 42.9% and 49.23% Vitamin C retention were observed, respectively, after 6 months of storage. Considering the results found, it can be concluded that lycopene and vitamin C content of twin layer solar tunnel dried tomato powder can be preserved at ambient temperature storage by packing in a polypropylene bottle with a safe range of moisture content and water activity levels for 6 months. The Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) was introduced by Fabio Sauli in 1997. This technology is broadly used in current and planned High-Energy Physics (HEP) experiments. One of the key components of these detectors is a readout board, which collects charges amplified by GEM foils and transfers them to readout electronics. The commonly used Cartesian XY readout boards are manufactured from the same type of polyamide film used to produce the GEM foils. The manufacturing process utilizes a deep polyimide etching, similar to the Micro Chemical Vias (MCV) etching process, which is protected by patent. The material prepared in this way is glued onto a rigid substrate and mounted in a detector. The production process was developed at CERN, and the technology has been commercialized to a small extent. Consequently, only a few research centers have the ability to make dedicated readout strips readouts. GEM detectors are characterized by a segmented structure that allows the separation of an electron-multiplying structure from a readout. This feature enables the implementation of a new type of charge reading system without the need to interfere with the GEM foil system. A new approach is proposed to simplify production and reduce the costs of GEM detector readout boards. It is based on the concept of segmental readout structures that are manufactured in standard Printed Circuit Board (PCB) technology. The interconnectors and mountings are located on the back of the bottom, so it is possible to place the readout electronics behind the readout plate. The boards are designed in such a way that they can be panelized into a readout with a more extensive active area. The margin between PCBs is minimalized to approximately 200 µm, which is less than 1% of the 70 × 70 mm2 board area, so the active area is as big as possible. Therefore, this solution gives us the ability to further increase the size of a readout by adding additional segments, which reduces the cost of scaling up the detector size. A few research groups have suggested similar solutions that utilize PCB technology, but currently, only detectors with 1D zigzag readouts have been validated and used. The measurement results of other 2D (XY) redouts using PCB technology have not been presented. The measurements shown and discussed in this paper validated the proposed technology. X-ray radiographs were obtained, validating the ability to use this technology to manufacture readout boards for GEM detectors. In opposition to state-of-the-art readouts, the proposed solution can be manufactured by any PCB manufacturer without using MCV-patented technology. Background: To prevent the transmission of blood-borne infections and reach the elimination of viral hepatitis by 2030, the World Health Organization (WHO) has set the goal to distribute 300 sterile needles and syringes each year per person who injects drugs (PWID). We aimed to assess drug paraphernalia distribution in Germany in 2021, including the WHO indicator, and to analyse changes to the distribution measured in 2018. Methods: We conducted a repeated cross-sectional study of low-threshold drug services in Germany. We assessed type and quantity of distributed drug paraphernalia and the number of supplied PWID in 2021 using an online and paper-based questionnaire. We conducted a descriptive statistical analysis of data from 2021, assessed fulfillment of the WHO indicator and changes in services that participated 2021 and in the previous study 2018. Results: Five hundred and eighty-nine of 1760 distributed questionnaires were returned in 2021. 204 drug services from 15 out of 16 federal states confirmed drug paraphernalia distribution, covering 20% of Germany's rural and 51% of urban counties. 108 services had also participated in 2018. The most frequently distributed paraphernalia for injecting drug use in 2021 were syringes (97% of services), needles (96%) and vitamin C (90%). Pre-cut aluminium foil (79% of services) and pipes (28%) for inhaling, and sniff tubes (43%) for nasal use were distributed less frequently. We found a median reduction in distributed syringes by 18% and by 12% for needles compared to 2018. Of 15 states, two reached the 2030 WHO-target for needles and one for syringes. Conclusions: The current national estimates and changes from 2018 to 2021 for drug paraphernalia distribution seem far from meeting the WHO target. Reasons could include a change in drug consumption behaviour towards less injecting use and more inhaling, and effects of the COVID-19 pandemic (supply difficulties, social distancing, lockdown, reduced opening hours of services). We observed pronounced regional differences in drug paraphernalia distribution. To close existing gaps, Germany should expand its drug paraphernalia distribution programmes and other harm reduction services, such as drug consumption rooms. Solid-state transformer (SST) is an emerging technology that integrates with transformer power electronics converters and control. The most noticeable advantages of SST are the size and weight reduction compared with low-frequency transformers. Since this device is used in many devices such as smart grids, traction systems, systems with renewable energy sources (RESs) and electric vehicle charging devices, it is important to build a high-efficiency device at a low cost. The article evaluates a medium frequency transformer (SST) operating at a frequency of 500 Hz to 6000 Hz with coils wound with aluminum foil or Litz windings and of a grain-oriented electrical steel (GOES) core. The calculations were made using the 3D field method using the numerical finite element method, and the results were compared with the tests of the real model.
