Abstract: This article proposes a so-called Quasi Time-Reversible (QTR G-Ext) scheme based on Grassmann extrapolation of density matrices for an accurate calculation of initial guesses in Born-Oppenheimer Molecular Dynamics simulations. The method shows excellent results on four large molecular systems, ranging from 21 to 94 atoms simulated with Kohn-Sham density functional theory surrounded with a classical environment with 6k to 16k atoms. Namely, it clearly reduces the number of self-consistent field iterations, while keeping a similar energy drift as in the extended Lagrangian Born-Oppenheimer method.

Abstract: In this article, we propose a reduced basis method for parametrized non-symmetric eigenvalue problems arising in the loading pattern optimization of a nuclear core in neutronics. To this end, we derive a posteriori error estimates for the eigenvalue and left and right eigenvectors. The practical computation of these estimators requires the estimation of a constant called prefactor, which we can express as the spectral norm of some operator. We provide some elements of theoretical analysis which illustrate the link between the expression of the prefactor we obtain here and its well-known expression in the case of symmetric eigenvalue problems, either using the notion of numerical range of the operator, or via a perturbative analysis. Lastly, we propose a practical method in order to estimate this prefactor which yields interesting numerical results on actual test cases. We provide detailed numerical simulations on two-dimensional examples including a multigroup neutron diffusion equation.

Abstract: In this article, we present an overview of different a posteriori error analysis and postprocessing methods proposed in the context of nonlinear eigenvalue problems, e.g. arising inelectronic structure calculations for the calculation of the ground state and compare them. Weprovide two equivalent error reconstructions based either on a second-order Taylor expansionof the minimized energy, or a first-order expansion of the nonlinear eigenvalue equation. Wethen show how several a posteriori error estimations as well as post-processing methods can beformulated as specific applications of the derived reconstructed errors, and we compare theirrange of applicability as well as numerical cost and precision.

Abstract: International audience; AIMS: Although prebiotics, probiotics, and fecal transplantation can alter the sensation of hunger and/or feeding behavior, the role of the constitutive gut microbiota in the short-term regulation of food intake during normal physiology is still unclear. RESULTS: An antibiotic-induced microbiota depletion study was designed to compare feeding behavior in conventional and microbiota-depleted mice. Tissues were sampled to characterize the time profile of microbiota-derived signals in mice during consumption of either standard or high-fat food for 1 hour. Pharmacological and genetic tools were used to evaluate the contribution of postprandial endotoxemia and inflammatory responses in the short-term regulation of food intake. We observed constitutive microbial and macronutrient-dependent control of food intake at the time scale of a meal, i.e., within 1 hour of food introduction. Specifically, microbiota depletion increased food intake and the microbiota-derived anorectic effect became significant during the consumption of high-fat but not standard food. This anorectic effect correlated with a specific postprandial microbial metabolic signature and did not require postprandial endotoxemia or an NLRP3 (NOD-, LRR- and Pyrin domain-containing protein 3)-inflammasome mediated inflammatory response. Innovation and Conclusion: These findings show that the gut microbiota controls host appetite at the time scale of a meal under normal physiology. Interestingly, a microbiota-derived anorectic effect develops specifically with a high-fat meal, indicating that gut microbiota activity is involved in the satietogenic properties of foods.

Abstract: The aim of this article is to propose a new reduced-order modelling approach for parametric eigenvalue problems arising in electronic structure calculations. Namely, we develop nonlinear reduced basis techniques for the approximation of parametric eigenvalue problems inspired from quantum chemistry applications. More precisely, we consider here a onedimensional model which is a toy model for the computation of the electronic ground state wavefunction of a system of electrons within a molecule, solution to the many-body electronic Schrödinger equation, where the varying parameters are the positions of the nuclei in the molecule. We estimate the decay rate of the Kolmogorov n-width of the set of solutions for this parametric problem in several settings, including the standard L2-norm as well as with distances based on optimal transport. The fact that the latter decays much faster than in the traditional L2-norm setting motivates us to propose a practical nonlinear reduced basis method, which is based on an offline greedy algorithm, and an efficient stochastic energy minimization in the online phase. We finally provide numerical results illustrating the capabilities of the method and good approximation properties, both in the offline and the online phase.

Abstract: International audience; N2O contributes to increasing the greenhouse effect and is also involved in stratospheric ozone depletion. In soil and water, N2O reductase catalyses the reduction of N2O into the inert form N2. N2O reductase activity is known to be affected by acidic conditions and the application of liming materials to acidic soils is now proposed as a solution for mitigating soil N2O emissions. During a one-year laboratory experiment, we studied the functioning of N2O reductase after the application of calcium carbonates to an acidic soil with a very low capacity to reduce N2O. The functioning of N2O reductase was characterised through anaerobic incubations using the acetylene inhibition technique combined with a logistic model to determine the main enzyme functioning characteristics (latency, maximal rate). Both changes in soil pH and soil capacity to reduce N2O were rapidly observed after the application of lime materials. The activity of N2O reductase was observed to be efficient throughout the experiment even when the soil had returned to initial acidic conditions, revealing a hysteretic response of N2O reductase to pH variations. Nevertheless, some signs of lower N2O reductase activity over time were observed mainly after 200 days of applying lime materials. Altogether, these results suggest that, in this soil condition, the beneficial impact of the application of liming materials on N2O emissions could last longer than this on soil pH.

Abstract: International audience; RGB-D saliency detection aims to fuse multi-modal cues to accurately localize salient regions. Existing works often adopt attention modules for feature modeling, with few methods explicitly leveraging fine-grained details to merge with semantic cues. Thus, despite the auxiliary depth information, it is still challenging for existing models to distinguish objects with similar appearances but at distinct camera distances. In this paper, from a new perspective, we propose a novel Hierarchical Depth Awareness network (HiDAnet) for RGB-D saliency detection. Our motivation comes from the observation that the multigranularity properties of geometric priors correlate well with the neural network hierarchies. To realize multi-modal and multi-level fusion, we first use a granularity-based attention scheme to strengthen the discriminatory power of RGB and depth features separately. Then we introduce a unified cross dual-attention module for multi-modal and multi-level fusion in a coarse-to-fine manner. The encoded multi-modal features are gradually aggregated into a shared decoder. Further, we exploit a multi-scale loss to take full advantage of the hierarchical information. Extensive experiments on challenging benchmark datasets demonstrate that our HiDAnet performs favorably over the state-of-the-art methods by large margins. Abstract: International audience; Calcium is a ubiquitous second messenger regulating numbers of cellular processes in living organisms. It encodes and transmits information perceived by cells to downstream sensors, including calmodulin (CaM), that initiate cellular responses. In plants, CaM has been involved in the regulation of plant responses to biotic and abiotic environmental cues. Plant CaMs possess a cysteine residue in their first calcium-binding motif EF-hand, which is not conserved in other eucaryotic organisms. In this work, we report the near-complete backbone chemical shift assignment of tobacco CaM2 with calcium. These results will be useful to study the impact of this particular EF-hand domain regarding CaM interaction with partners involved in stress responses.

Abstract: International audience; The functioning of the nitrous oxide (N2O) reductase enzyme involved in the last step of denitrification is pH sensitive, with an optimum of 6.8. A solution to mitigate N2O emissions would be to bring soil pH close to neutrality by adding agricultural liming products (aglime). Nevertheless, the influence of aglime on the soil greenhouse gas (GHG) balance (CO2–N2O) is a subject of debate, particularly when considering the fate of the carbon (C) derived from carbonates. Our objective was to investigate the results of the effect of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) aglime on the CO2–N2O balance. Sixteen cylinders of undisturbed acidic soil were taken from a sandy loam profile and incubated at 20°C for 107 days in anaerobic conditions (water-filled pore space >60%). Eight limed treatment cylinders received 1.45 g of aglime on the soil surface (2 t NV ha−1) and 0.08 g of N (100 kg of N ha−1). Eight control treatment cylinders received only 0.08 g of N. N2O and CO2 fluxes were measured and converted into CO2 equivalents to perform a GHG balance calculation. Furthermore, soil and leachate properties were measured. Aglime application triggered a reduction of N2O emissions, probably due to an increase in soil pH at the beginning of the experiment, which would have led to the N2O reductase activation. High NO3--N content in the soil may inhibit the high N2O reduction potential in the limed treatment. CO2 emissions were unexpectedly lower in the limed treatment. Aglime addition did not enhance C mineralisation, which may be explained by the possible stabilisation of soil organic carbon. A significant 11.3% reduction of GHG emissions was observed in the limed treatment. Overall, our results show that a strategy of liming acidic agricultural soil could be implemented for its potential in GHG mitigation. Nevertheless, future in-depth research is necessary to better understand the fate of the C brought about by aglime.

Abstract: Omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are required for the structure and function of the retina. They could also help to prevent or delay the development of retinopathies. Given the accumulating evidence showing the role of gut microbiota in regulating retinal physiology and host lipid metabolism, we evaluated the potential of long-term dietary supplementation with the Gram-positive bacterium Lacticaseibacillus helveticus strain VEL12193 to modulate the retinal n-3 PUFA content. A set of complementary approaches was used to study the impact of such a supplementation on the gut microbiota and host lipid/fatty acid (FA) metabolism. L. helveticus-supplementation was associated with a decrease in retinal saturated FAs (SFAs) and monounsaturated FAs (MUFAs) as well as an increase in retinal n-3 and omega-6 (n-6) PUFAs. Interestingly, supplementation with L. helveticus enriched the retina in C22:5n-3 (docosapentaenoic acid, DPA), C22:6n-3 (DHA), C18:2n-6 (linoleic acid, LA) and C20:3n-6 (dihomo gamma-linolenic acid, DGLA). Long-term consumption of L. helveticus also modulated gut microbiota composition and some changes in OTUs abundance correlated with the retinal FA content. This study provides a proof of concept that targeting the gut microbiota could be an effective strategy to modulate the retinal FA content, including that of protective n-3 PUFAs, thus opening paths for the design of novel preventive and/or therapeutical strategies for retinopathies.

Abstract: In this article, we study Wasserstein-type metrics and corresponding barycenters for mixtures of a chosen subset of probability measures called atoms hereafter. In particular, this works extends what was proposed by Delon and Desolneux [A Wasserstein-Type Distance in the Space of Gaussian Mixture Models. SIAM J. Imaging Sci. 13, 936-970 (2020)] for mixtures of gaussian measures to other mixtures. We first prove in a general setting that for a set of atoms equipped with a metric that defines a geodesic space, the set of mixtures based on this set of atoms is also geodesic space for the defined modified Wasserstein metric. We then focus on two particular cases of sets of atoms: (i) the set of location-scatter atoms and (ii) the set of measures that are invariant with respect to some symmetry group. Both cases are particularly relevant for various applications among which electronic structure calculations. Along the way, we also prove some sparsity and symmetry properties of optimal transport plans between measures that are invariant under some well-chosen symmetries.

Abstract: International audience; Mercury (Hg) pollution is a global issue due to the high toxicity and wide dispersion of Hg around the world. Whether due to anthropogenic activities or natural processes, Hg emissions are steadily increasing, with very high levels in some regions, directly threatening human and ecosystem health. However, bacteria and fungi have evolved and adapted in response to Hg-induced stress and have developed tolerance mechanisms, notably based on the mer operon system that is involved in Hg uptake and biovolatilization via Hg reduction reactions. Other processes, such as bioaccumulation or extracellular sequestration, are involved in Hg resistance, and the study of contaminated soils has allowed the isolation of a number of microorganisms capable of these mechanisms, with strong potential for the implementation of bioremediation approaches. In addition to playing an important role in determining the fate of Hg in the biogeochemical cycle, these microorganisms can indeed be applied to reduce Hg concentrations or at least stabilize Hg for the remediation of polluted soils. Moreover, thanks to the development of biotechnological tools, bioremediation based on Hg-tolerant microorganisms can be optimized. Finally, these microorganisms are relevant candidates for biomonitoring, for example, through the engineering of biosensors, because the detection of Hg is a major issue in preserving the health of living beings.

Abstract: Electromagnetic radiation within the terahertz (THz) frequency range is of great interest for applications in remote sensing and time-domain spectroscopy. The laser-induced plasmas are promising mediums for generating THz radiation. It has been recently reported that focusing femtosecond Bessel pulses inside dielectrics induces a high aspect ratio over-critical plasmas. Here we show that the intense resonantly driven electrostatic fields at the so-called critical surface lead to THz radiation emission. Through three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation and analytical derivation, we have investigated the emission of THz radiation. Abstract: International audience; Knowledge of the early evolution of post-Palaeozoic crinoids mainly relies on the well-preserved and abundant material sampled in Triassic Konservat-Lagerstätten such as those from the Anisian Muschelkalk (Middle Triassic) of the Germanic Basin. These crinoid-bearing Lagerstätten have been central to understanding the rapid evolution and diversification of crinoids after the dramatic Permian/Triassic Boundary biological crisis that led the class to near-extinction. The Encrinida are the emblematic crinoids of the Triassic. They are mainly known from rich fossil deposits where their abundant ossicles are at the origin of the extensive crinoidal limestone beds of the German Upper Muschelkalk. So far, they were first represented in the Middle Triassic by the family Dadocrinidae and genus Dadocrinus. In the present work, a new species Dadocrinus montellonis sp. nov., is described based on a well-preserved, almost complete articulated specimen from the Spathian (Lower Triassic) of Nevada (USA). The new species differs from other species of Dadocrinus by its palaeobiogeographic position but also by its earlier stratigraphic occurrence and ancestral morphology. It represents the first reported occurrence of Dadocrinus outside the Germanic Basin prior to the Middle Triassic and also the oldest firm evidence of its presence in the Early Triassic (middle–late Spathian). This discovery sheds new light on the origin of post-Palaeozoic crinoids. It suggests a much wider distribution than commonly assumed for the genus Dadocrinus and implies that the first dadocrinids originated either in the Panthalassa or Tethys oceans, and then dispersed over long distances in a relative short period of time.

Abstract: 23 pages; International audience; The late Smithian extinction represents a major event within the Early Triassic. This event generally corresponds to a succession of two, possibly three successively less diverse, cosmopolitan ammonoid assemblages, which when present, provide a robust biostratigraphic framework and precise correlations at different spatial scales. In the western USA basin, known occurrences of latest Smithian taxa are rare and until now, have only been documented from northeastern Nevada. Based on these restricted basinal occurrences, a regional zone representing the latest Smithian was postulated but not corroborated, as representative taxa had not yet been reported from outside Nevada. Here we document two new ammonoid assemblages from distant localities in northern Utah, overlying the late Smithian Anasibirites beds and characterized by the unambiguous co-occurrence of Xenoceltites subevolutus and Pseudosageceras augustum. The existence of a latest Smithian zone in the western USA basin is therefore validated, facilitating the identification of the Smithian/Spathian boundary and intra-basin correlation. This zone also correlates with the latest Smithian zone recognized from southern Tethyan basins. Additionally, these new data support other observed occurrences of Xenoceltites subevolutus throughout most of the late Smithian.

Abstract: 13 pages; International audience; El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) shows a large diversity of events that is modulated by climate variability and change. The representation of this diversity in climate models limits our ability to predict their impact on ecosystems and human livelihood. Here, we use multiple observational datasets to provide a probabilistic description of historical variations in event location and intensity, and to benchmark models, before examining future system trajectories. We find robust decadal variations in event intensities and locations in century-long observational datasets, which are associated with perturbations in equatorial wind-stress and thermocline depth, as well as extra-tropical anomalies in the North and South Pacific. Some climate models are capable of simulating such decadal variability in ENSO diversity, and the associated large-scale patterns. Projections of ENSO diversity in future climate change scenarios strongly depend on the magnitude of decadal variations, and the ability of climate models to reproduce them realistically over the 21 st century.

Abstract: International audience; We aim at controlling the spatial distribution of nonlinear photoluminescence in a shaped micrometer-size crystalline gold flake. Interestingly, the underlying surface plasmon modal landscape sustained by this mesoscopic structure can be advantageously used to generate nonlinear photoluminescence (nPL) in remote locations away from the excitation spot. By controlling the modal pattern, we show that the delocalized nonlinear photoluminescence intensity can be redistributed spatially. This is first accomplished by changing the polarization orientation of the pulsed laser excitation in order to select a subset of available surface plasmon modes within a continuum. We then propose a second approach to redistribute the nPL within the structure by implementing a phase control of the plasmon interference pattern arising from a coherent two-beam excitation. Control and engineering of the nonlinear photoluminescence spatial extension is a prerequisite for deploying the next generation of plasmonic-enabled integrated devices relying on hot carriers.

Abstract: 26 p.; International audience; This paper explores the nonlinear photoluminescence emitted by Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) thin layers patterned by focused gallium ion beam milling. Using tightly focused near-infrared femtosecond pulsed laser excitation, a broad up-converted luminescence spanning the visible spectrum is detected. The intensity of the luminescence follows a non-monotonous relationship with milling doses and can be related to the modification of the ITO electronic band structure by the implantation of Ga ions. The shape and the power dependence of the spectrum share strong similarities with nonlinear photoluminescence arising from metals. The results are consistent with a nonlinear luminescence process originating from the radiative decay of photo-generated hot carriers. The ther-1 mal coefficient relating the hot carrier temperature to the laser intensity is determined as a function of milling dose.

Abstract: International audience; Plasmalogens (Pls) are glycerophospholipids that play critical roles in the brain. Evidence supports the role of diet and that of the gut microbiota in regulating brain lipids. We investigated the impact of dietary intake of inulin—a soluble fiber used as prebiotic—on the Pl content of the cortex in mice. No global modification in the Pl amounts was observed when evaluated by gas chromatographic analysis of dimethyl acetals (DMAs). However, the analysis of individual molecular species of Pls by liquid chromatography revealed a reduced abundance of major species of ethanolamine Pls (PlsEtn)―PE(P-18:0/22:6) and PE(P-34:1)―in the cortex of mice fed a diet supplemented with inulin. DMA and expression levels of genes (Far-1, Gnpat, Agps, Pla2g6 and Tmem86b) encoding key enzymes of Pl biosynthesis or degradation were not altered in the liver and in the cortex of mice exposed to inulin. In addition, the fatty acid profile and the amount of lyso forms derived from PlsEtn were not modified in the cortex by inulin consumption. To conclude, inulin affects the brain levels of major PlsEtn and further investigation is needed to determine the exact molecular mechanisms involved.

Abstract: In this article, we propose general criteria to construct optimal atomic centered basis sets in quantum chemistry. We focus in particular on two criteria, one based on the ground-state one-body density matrix of the system and the other based on the ground-state energy. The performance of these two criteria are then numerically tested and compared on a parametrized eigenvalue problem, which corresponds to a one-dimensional toy version of the ground-state dissociation of a diatomic molecule.; Nous proposons dans cet article des critères généraux pour construire des bases atomiques localisées optimales en chimie quantique. Nous nous intéressons en particulier à deux critères: l’un basé sur la matrice densité à un corps du système, l’autre basé sur l’énergie de l’état fondamental du système. Les performances de ces deux critères sont évaluées et comparées sur un problème aux valeurs propres paramétré, correspondant à une version simplifiée du problème de dissociation de l’état fondamental d’une molécule diatomique.

Abstract: We present a model of worldwide crisis contagion based on the Google matrix analysis of the world trade network obtained from the UN Comtrade database. The fraction of bankrupted countries exhibits an \textit{on-off} phase transition governed by a bankruptcy threshold $\kappa$ related to the trade balance of the countries. Abstract: International audience; Sex categorization is essential for mate choice and social interactions in many animal species. In humans, sex categorization is readily performed from the face. However, clear neural markers of face-sex categorization, i.e., common responses to widely variable individuals from one sex, have not been identified so far in humans. To isolate a direct signature of rapid and automatic face-sex categorization generalized across a wide range of variable exemplars, we recorded scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) from 32 participants (16 females) while they were exposed to variable natural face images from one sex alternating at a rapid rate of 6 Hz (i.e., 6 images per second). Images from the other sex were inserted every 6th stimulus (i.e., at a 1-Hz rate). A robust categorization response to both sex contrasts emerged at 1 Hz and harmonics in the EEG frequency spectrum over the occipito-temporal cortex of most participants. The response was larger for female faces presented among male faces than the reverse, suggesting that the two sex categories are not equally homogenous. This asymmetrical response pattern disappeared for upside-down faces, ruling out the contribution of low-level physical variability across images. Overall, these observations demonstrate that sex categorization occurs automatically after a single glance at natural face images and can be objectively isolated and quantified in the human brain within a few minutes.

Abstract: International audience; Multimaterial optical fibers combining tellurite with chalcogenide glasses and featuring thin polymer structures are fabricated via the thermal drawing process. It is demonstrated that micrometric polyethersulfone films can be embedded within larger elongated tellurite/chalcogenide glass architectures. Taking advantage of the strong chemical reactivity contrasts which exist in the considered fiber geometries, a quasi-exposed-core waveguide is obtained by selective etching of the glass cladding. The potential of the postprocessed fiber structure is then assessed through evanescent-wave probing of liquids and numerical investigations are carried out to establish the device performances as function of selected optogeometric parameters. Those results open the way for the development of evolutive photonic objects benefiting from postdrawing processing of multimaterial fibers.

Abstract: Second-harmonic emission at a frequency that is twice the laser frequency is an important diagnostic for nonlinear laser-plasma interaction. It is forbidden for centrosymmetric materials such as the bulk of sapphire. The symmetry, however, can be broken by dielectric discontinuities as a result of plasma generation inside a solid dielectric. In the present work, we explore the basic characteristics of experimentally observed second-harmonic emission during focusing a femtosecond Bessel beam inside sapphire. We employ three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and the Helmholtz wave equation for theoretical investigations. We analyze how the efficiency of second-harmonic generation and its polarization depend on the plasma parameters. We find that the second-harmonic is generated either due to the coalescence of two surface electromagnetic waves or nonlinear interaction between the transverse electromagnetic wave and the longitudinal electron plasma wave driven by linear mode conversion. Experimental results agree with the theoretical predictions and confirm the existence of over-critical plasma inside the sapphire that is essential for the resonance of plasma waves or excitation of surface plasmons., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, published in Physics of Plasmas

Abstract: The creation of high energy density ($\gtrsim10^6$ joules per cm$^3$) over-critical plasmas in a large volume has essential applications in the study of warm dense matter, being present in the hot cores of stars and planets. It was recently shown that femtosecond Bessel beams enable creating over-critical plasmas inside sapphire with sub-wavelength radius and several tens of micrometers in length. Here, the dependence of field structure and absorption mechanism on the plasma density transverse profile are investigated by performing self-consistent Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations. Two { limiting} cases are considered: one is a homogeneous step-like profile, that can sustain plasmon formation, the second is an inhomogeneous Gaussian profile, where resonance absorption occurs. Comparing experimental absorption measures to analytical predictions allows determining the plasma parameters used in PIC simulations. The PIC simulation results are in good agreement with experimental diagnostics of total absorption, near-field fluence distribution, and far-field radiation pattern. Abstract: International audience; This article aims at understanding the representations and the practices of professionals working in nursing home when setting up actions to engage the resident in the feeding act. The process of engaging in the feeding act is not only looked for improving satisfaction and fulfilling nutritional needs, but also for a more general benefit, around conviviality and well-being (mental and physical). To carry out this study, a survey was achieved among 20 people working in nursing home. These semi-structured interviews gave rise to an analysis through the prism of a SWOT matrix (Strengths – Weaknesses – Opportunities – Threats) in order to identify the determinants favoring or preventing these actions. This article allows the identification of levers in favor of these actions, in particular the adaptability of the actions to residents’ capacities, collective communication and sufficient human and financial resources. This article also underlines the difficulties encountered by the staff in the implementation of these actions. These difficulties go beyond the strict framework of meals, but relate to organizational, economic and human dimensions. However, if these difficulties can be overcome, the benefits are not only nutritional but also physical, cognitive and relational. Finally, this work questions the notions of commitment and empowerment in an institution.

Abstract: In this article we prove a priori error estimates for the perturbation-based post-processing of the plane-wave approximation of Schrödinger equations introduced and tested numerically in previous works (Cancès, Dusson, Maday, Stamm and Vohralík, (2014), A perturbation-method-based a posteriori estimator for the planewave discretization of nonlinear Schrödinger equations. C. R. Math., 352, 941--946; Cancès, Dusson, Maday, Stamm and Vohralík, (2016), A perturbation-method-based postprocessing for the planewave discretization of Kohn–Sham models. J. Comput. Phys., 307, 446--459.) We consider here a Schrödinger operator ${{\mathscr{H}} \,}= -\frac{1}{2}\varDelta +{\mathscr{V}}$ on $L^2(\varOmega )$, where $\varOmega $ is a cubic box with periodic boundary conditions and where ${\mathscr{V}}$ is a multiplicative operator by a regular-enough function ${\mathscr{V}}$. The quantities of interest are, on the one hand, the ground-state energy defined as the sum of the lowest $N$ eigenvalues of ${{\mathscr{H}} \,}$, and, on the other hand, the ground-state density matrix that is the spectral projector on the vector space spanned by the associated eigenvectors. Such a problem is central in first-principle molecular simulation, since it corresponds to the so-called linear subproblem in Kohn–Sham density functional theory. Interpreting the exact eigenpairs of ${{\mathscr{H}} \,}$ as perturbations of the numerical eigenpairs obtained by a variational approximation in a plane-wave (i.e., Fourier) basis we compute first-order corrections for the eigenfunctions, which are turned into corrections on the ground-state density matrix. This allows us to increase the accuracy by a factor proportional to the inverse of the kinetic energy cutoff ${E_{\textrm{c}}}^{-1}$ of both the ground-state energy and the ground-state density matrix in Hilbert–Schmidt norm at a low computational extra cost. Indeed, the computation of the corrections only requires the computation of the residual of the solution in a larger plane-wave basis and two fast Fourier transforms per eigenvalue.

Abstract: International audience; The current study examined the influence of everyday perceptual experience with infant and child faces on the shaping of visual biases for faces in 3.5-, 6-, 9-, and 12-month-old infants. In Experiment 1, infants were presented with pairs of photographs of unfamiliar child and infant faces. Four groups with differential experience with infant and child faces were composed from parents’ reports of daily exposure with infants and children (no experience, infant face experience, child face experience, and both infant and child face experience) to assess influence of experience on face preferences. Results showed that infants from all age groups displayed a bias for the novel category of faces in relation to their previous exposure to infant and child faces. In Experiment 2, this pattern of visual attention was reversed in infants presented with pictures of personally familiar child faces (i.e., older siblings) compared with unfamiliar infant faces, especially in older infants. These results suggest that allocation of attention for novelty can supersede familiarity biases for faces depending on experience and highlight that multiple factors drive infant visual behavior in responding to the social world.

Abstract: International audience; A recent body of research has emerged regarding the interactions between olfaction and other sensory channels to process social information. The current review examines the influence of body odors on face perception, a core component of human social cognition. First, we review studies reporting how body odors interact with the perception of invariant facial information (i.e., identity, sex, attractiveness, trustworthiness, and dominance). Although we mainly focus on the influence of body odors based on axillary odor, we also review findings about specific steroids present in axillary sweat (i.e., androstenone, androstenol, androstadienone, and estratetraenol). We next survey the literature showing body odor influences on the perception of transient face properties, notably in discussing the role of body odors in facilitating or hindering the perception of emotional facial expression, in relation to competing frameworks of emotions. Finally, we discuss the developmental origins of these olfaction-to-vision influences, as an emerging literature indicates that odor cues strongly influence face perception in infants. Body odors with a high social relevance such as the odor emanating from the mother have a widespread influence on various aspects of face perception in infancy, including categorization of faces among other objects, face scanning behavior, or facial expression perception. We conclude by suggesting that the weight of olfaction might be especially strong in infancy, shaping social perception, especially in slow-maturing senses such as vision, and that this early tutoring function of olfaction spans all developmental stages to disambiguate a complex social environment by conveying key information for social interactions until adulthood.

Abstract: The presence of an inactivating heat shock protein 110 (HSP110) mutation in colorectal cancers has been correlated with an excellent prognosis and with the ability of HSP110 to favor the formation of tolerogenic (M2-like) macrophages. These clinical and experimental results suggest a potentially powerful new strategy against colorectal cancer: the inhibition of HSP110. In this work, as an alternative to neutralizing antibodies, Nanofitins (scaffold ~7 kDa proteins) targeting HSP110 were isolated from the screening of a synthetic Nanofitin library, and their capacity to bind (immunoprecipitation, biolayer interferometry) and to inhibit HSP110 was analyzed in vitro and in vivo. Three Nanofitins were found to inhibit HSP110 chaperone activity. Interestingly, they share a high degree of homology in their variable domain and target the peptide-binding domain of HSP110. In vitro, they inhibited the ability of HSP110 to favor M2-like macrophages. The Nanofitin with the highest affinity, A-C2, was studied in the CT26 colorectal cancer mice model. Our PET/scan experiments demonstrate that A-C2 may be localized within the tumor area, in accordance with the reported HSP110 abundance in the tumor microenvironment. A-C2 treatment reduced tumor growth and was associated with an increase in immune cells infiltrating the tumor and particularly cytotoxic macrophages. These results were confirmed in a chicken chorioallantoic membrane tumor model. Finally, we showed the complementarity between A-C2 and an anti-PD-L1 strategy in the in vivo and in ovo tumor models. Overall, Nanofitins appear to be promising new immunotherapeutic lead compounds.

Abstract: International audience; Understanding how the young infant brain starts to categorize the flurry of ambiguous sensory inputs coming in from its complex environment is of primary scientific interest. Here, we test the hypothesis that senses other than vision play a key role in initiating complex visual categorizations in 20 4-mo-old infants exposed either to a baseline odor or to their mother’s odor while their electroencephalogram (EEG) is recorded. Various natural images of objects are presented at a 6-Hz rate (six images/second), with face-like object configurations of the same object categories (i.e., eliciting face pareidolia in adults) interleaved every sixth stimulus (i.e., 1 Hz). In the baseline odor context, a weak neural categorization response to face-like stimuli appears at 1 Hz in the EEG frequency spectrum over bilateral occipitotemporal regions. Critically, this face-like–selective response is magnified and becomes right lateralized in the presence of maternal body odor. This reveals that nonvisual cues systematically associated with human faces in the infant’s experience shape the interpretation of face-like configurations as faces in the right hemisphere, dominant for face categorization. At the individual level, this intersensory influence is particularly effective when there is no trace of face-like categorization in the baseline odor context. These observations provide evidence for the early tuning of face-(like)–selective activity from multisensory inputs in the developing brain, suggesting that perceptual development integrates information across the senses for efficient category acquisition, with early maturing systems such as olfaction driving the acquisition of categories in later-developing systems such as vision.

Abstract: We establish the universal edge scaling limit of random partitions with the infinite-parameter distribution called the Schur measure. We explore the asymptotic behavior of the wave function, which is a building block of the corresponding kernel, based on the Schr{\"o}dinger-type differential equation. We show that the wave function is in general asymptotic to the Airy function and its higher-order analogs in the edge scaling limit. Abstract: The MetaCore commercial database describes interactions of proteins and other chemical molecules and clusters in the form of directed network between these elements, viewed as nodes. The number of nodes goes beyond 40 thousands with almost 300 thousands links between them. The links have essentially bi-functional nature describing either activation or inhibition actions between proteins. We present here the analysis of statistical properties of this complex network applying the methods of the Google matrix, PageRank and CheiRank algorithms broadly used in the frame of the World Wide Web, Wikipedia, the world trade and other directed networks. We specifically describe the Ising PageRank approach which allows to treat the bi-functional type of protein–protein interactions. We also show that the developed reduced Google matrix algorithm allows to obtain an effective network of interactions inside a specific group of selected proteins. In addition to already known direct protein–protein interactions, this method allows to infer non trivial and unknown interactions between proteins arising from the summation over all the indirect pathways passing via the global bi-functional network. The developed analysis allows to establish an average action of each protein being more oriented to activation or inhibition. We argue that the described Google matrix analysis represents an efficient tool for investigation of influence of specific groups of proteins related to specific diseases.

Abstract: We introduce and explore an approach for constructing force fields for small molecules, which combines intuitive low body order empirical force field terms with the concepts of data driven statistical fits of recent machine learned potentials. We bring these two key ideas together to bridge the gap between established empirical force fields that have a high degree of transferability on the one hand, and the machine learned potentials that are systematically improvable and can converge to very high accuracy, on the other. Our framework extends the atomic permutationally invariant polynomials (aPIP) developed for elemental materials in (2019 Mach. Learn.: Sci. Technol. 1 015004) to molecular systems. The body order decomposition allows us to keep the dimensionality of each term low, while the use of an iterative fitting scheme as well as regularisation procedures improve the extrapolation outside the training set. We investigate aPIP force fields with up to generalised 4-body terms, and examine the performance on a set of small organic molecules. We achieve a high level of accuracy when fitting individual molecules, comparable to those of the many-body machine learned force fields. Fitted to a combined training set of short linear alkanes, the accuracy of the aPIP force field still significantly exceeds what can be expected from classical empirical force fields, while retaining reasonable transferability to both configurations far from the training set and to new molecules.

Abstract: International audience; The abilities to identify individuals within the group, and to interpret their expressions and intentions are essential for many social animals. Face recognition in human and nonhuman primates stems from a conjunction of evolutionary inheritance and experience via exposure to faces present in the environment. Individuation is clearly a vital mechanism for any social species. By uncovering similarities across primate face systems, comparative studies allow us to better understand the evolution of face processing capabilities in humans. Some researchers have argued that primates, including humans, may possess an innate face processing system that is predisposed to respond to conspecifics. The argument is supported by a study showing that monkeys raised without experience of own-species faces still prefer to look at faces of conspecifics (Fujita, Int J Primatol 11:553–573, 1990). However, this proposal does not fit well with findings from the human infant literature (Pascalis et al., Science 296:1321–1323, 2002) or with data on monkeys raised without seeing faces (Sugita, Proc Natl Acad Sci, 105, 394–398, 2008) which suggest that face processing is highly shaped by experience at an early age. We argue that human and nonhuman primates possess an evolved system for processing faces that becomes specialized as a consequence of predominant exposure to faces from a single species. According to this interpretation, a limitation of the face processing expertise to own species should be observed.

Abstract: Black hole (BH) spectroscopy has emerged as a powerful approach to extract spacetime information from gravitational wave (GW) observed signals. Yet, quasinormal mode (QNM) spectral instability under high wave-number perturbations has been recently shown to be a common classical general relativistic phenomenon [1]. This requires to assess its impact on the BH QNM spectrum, in particular on BH QNM overtone frequencies. We conclude: i) perturbed BH QNM overtones are indeed potentially observable in the GW waveform, providing information on small-scale environment BH physics, and ii) their detection poses a challenging data analysis problem of singular interest for LISA astrophysics. We adopt a two-fold approach, combining theoretical results from scattering theory with a fine-tuned data analysis on a highly-accurate numerical GW ringdown signal. The former introduces a set of effective parameters (partially lying on a BH Weyl law) to characterise QNM instability physics. The latter provides a proof-of-principle demonstrating that the QNM spectral instability is indeed accessible in the time-domain GW waveform, though certainly requiring large signal-to-noise ratios. Abstract: Inspired by the work of Lorenzen on the theory of preordered groups in the forties and fifties, we define regular entailment relations and show a crucial theorem for this structure. We also describe equivariant systems of ideals à la Lorenzen and show that the remarkable regularisation process he invented yields a regular entailment relation. By providing constructive objects and arguments, we pursue Lorenzen’s aim of “bringing to light the basic, pure concepts in their simple and transparent clarity”.

Abstract: International audience; We document a relatively small but very important late Griesbachian ammonoid and nautiloid assemblage from the Dinwoody Formation at Crittenden Springs, Elko County, Nevada. This discovery represents the first significant report of late Griesbachian ammonoids in the low-paleolatitudes of eastern Panthalassa, and it also signifies the first report of Wordieoceras wordiei and two co-occurring taxa outside of the Boreal Realm. This similarity in ammonoid faunas, irrespective of paleolatitude, provides support for the concept of weak latitudinal diversity gradients following the end-Permian extinction. The finding is even more noteworthy given the Dinwoody Formation’s reputation for poor fossil preservation and a near complete absence of documented and identifiable ammonoid and nautiloid occurrences. Consisting of four taxa of which two are newly described, the ammonoid fauna includes Wordieoceras wordiei (Spath), Kyoktites cf. K. hebeiseni Ware and Bucher, Wordieoceras mullenae n. sp. and a new taxon belonging to the Mullericeratidae family, Ophimullericeras paullae n. gen., n. sp. The nautiloids are attributed to a newly described species, i.e., Xiaohenautilus mulleni n. sp., a genus heretofore unknown in eastern Panthalassa but commonly reported from the late Griesbachian of South Primorye and the late Griesbachian/early Dienerian of South China.

Abstract: We consider the propagation of temporally incoherent waves in multimode optical fibers (MMFs) in the framework of the multimode nonlinear Schr\"odinger (NLS) equation accounting for the impact of the natural structural disorder that affects light propagation in standard MMFs (random mode coupling and polarization fluctuations). By averaging the dynamics over the fast disordered fluctuations, we derive a Manakov equation from the multimode NLS equation, which reveals that the Raman effect introduces a previously unrecognized nonlinear coupling among the modes. Applying the wave turbulence theory on the Manakov equation, we derive a very simple scalar kinetic equation describing the evolution of the multimode incoherent waves. The structure of the kinetic equation is analogous to that developed in plasma physics to describe weak Langmuir turbulence. The extreme simplicity of the derived kinetic equation provides physical insight into the multimode incoherent wave dynamics. It reveals the existence of different collective behaviors where all modes self-consistently form a multimode spectral incoherent soliton state. Such an incoherent soliton can exhibit a discrete behavior characterized by collective synchronized spectral oscillations in frequency space. Abstract: 23 pages; International audience; A ca. 0.30 m thick cherty limestone bed in the Dalong Formation at Gujiao (Guizhou) has yielded a highly diverse Changhsingian nautiloid assemblage. Its age is late Changhsingian, indicated by the co-occurring ammonoid Pseudotirolites sp. This assemblage is composed of nine species and five taxa in open nomenclature in nine genera, including one new genus and three new species: Neotainoceras zhaoi sp. nov., Nodopleuroceras gujiaoense sp. nov. and Gujiaonautilus longliensis gen. et sp. nov. Sholakoceras is for the first time recorded in South China. Compared with literature data from 52 sites in various regions worldwide, the material described here presents the most diverse Changhsingian nautiloid assemblage. Among the genera of the Gujiao assemblage, Pleuronautilus, Tainoceras and Liroceras are cosmopolitan, while the others are more endemic or genera known so far only from South China.

The intersecting defects arise upon implementing the most generic Higgsing (geometric transition) to the parent higher dimensional theory, and they are described by pairs of 3d supersymmetric gauge theories with unitary groups interacting through 1d matter at the intersection. We explore the relations between instanton and generalized vortex calculus, pointing out a duality between intersecting defects subject to the $\Omega$-background and a deformation of supergroup gauge theories, the exact supergroup point being achieved in the self-dual or unrefined limit. Embedding our setup into refined topological strings and in the simplest case when the parent 5d theory is Abelian, we are able to identify the supergroup theory dual to the intersecting defects as the supergroup version of refined Chern-Simons theory via open/closed duality. Abstract: Affine ind-varieties are infinite dimensional generalizations of algebraic varieties which appear naturally in many different contexts, in particular in the study of automorphism groups of affine spaces. In this article we introduce and develop the basic algebraic theory of topologically integrable derivations of complete topological rings. We establish a bijective algebro-geometric correspondence between additive group actions on affine ind-varieties and topologically integrable derivations of their coordinate pro-rings which extends the classical fruitful correspondence between additive group actions on affine varieties and locally nilpotent derivations of their coordinate rings.

Abstract: International audience; In terms of coupled-mode theory, only two real-valued normalized parameters are needed for describing the spectral properties of any 1D photonic crystal of finite size made of lossless materials: detuning (delta L) with respect to the Bragg condition and coupling strength (kappa L). As far as its quasi-normal mode (QNM) spectrum is concerned, the usual "complex frequency" concept can be replaced by an effective "complex detuning" (delta L + i alpha L), thus establishing a formal connection with the modal cartography, in the (kappa L,alpha L) plane, of purely index-coupled distributed-feedback lasers of normalized gain alpha L.

Abstract: International audience; OBJECTIVES: Colostrum is the initial milk secretion which ingestion by neonates warrants their adaptive start in life. Colostrum is accordingly expected to be attractive to newborns. The present study aims to assess whether colostrum is olfactorily attractive for 2-day-old newborns when presented against mature milk or a control. METHODS: The head-orientation of waking newborns was videotaped in three experiments pairing the odors of: (a) colostrum (sampled on postpartum day 2, not from own mother) and mature milk (sampled on average on postpartum day 32, not from own mother) (n tested newborns = 15); (b) Colostrum and control (water; n = 9); and (c) Mature milk and control (n = 13). RESULTS: When facing the odors of colostrum and mature milk, the infants turned their nose significantly longer toward former (32.8 vs 17.7% of a 120-s test). When exposed to colostrum against the control, they responded in favor of colostrum (32.9 vs 16.6%). Finally, when the odor of mature milk was presented against the control, their response appeared undifferentiated (26.7 vs 28.6%). CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that human newborns can olfactorily differentiate conspecific lacteal fluids sampled at different lactation stages. They prefer the odor of the mammary secretion - colostrum - collected at the lactation stage that best matches the postpartum age of their own mother. These results are discussed in the context of the earliest mother-infant chemo-communication. Coinciding maternal emission and offspring reception of chemosignals conveyed in colostrum may be part of the sensory precursors of attunement between mothers and infants.

Abstract: In this article, we provide a priori estimates for a perturbation-based post-processing method of the plane-wave approximation of nonlinear Kohn–Sham local density approximation (LDA) models with pseudopotentials, relying on Cancès et al. (2020, Post-processing of the plane-wave approximation of Schrödinger equations. Part I: linear operators. IMA Journal of Numerical Analysis, draa044) for the proofs of such estimates in the case of linear Schrödinger equations. As in Cancès et al. (2016, A perturbation-method-based post-processing for the plane-wave discretization of Kohn–Sham models. J. Comput. Phys., 307, 446–459), where these a priori results were announced and tested numerically, we use a periodic setting and the problem is discretized with plane waves (Fourier series). This post-processing method consists of performing a full computation in a coarse plane-wave basis and then to compute corrections based on the first-order perturbation theory in a fine basis, which numerically only requires the computation of the residuals of the ground-state orbitals in the fine basis. We show that this procedure asymptotically improves the accuracy of two quantities of interest: the ground-state density matrix, i.e. the orthogonal projector on the lowest $N$ eigenvectors, and the ground-state energy.

Abstract: It is found that $15$ different types of two-qubit $X$-states split naturally into two sets (of cardinality $9$ and $6$) once their entanglement properties are taken into account. We {characterize both the validity and entangled nature of the $X$-states with maximally-mixed subsystems in terms of certain parameters} and show that their properties are related to a special class of geometric hyperplanes of the symplectic polar space of order two and rank two. Abstract: 13 pages; International audience; Parasites alter many traits of their hosts. In particular, parasites known as “manipulative” may increase their probability of transmission by inducing phenotypic alterations in their intermediate hosts. Although parasitic-induced alterations can modify species’ ecological roles, the proximate factors modulating this phenomenon remain poorly known. As temperature is known to affect host–parasite associations, understanding its precise impact has become a major challenge in a context of global warming. Gammarids are ecologically important freshwater crustaceans and serve as intermediate hosts for several acanthocephalan species. These parasites induce multiple effects on gammarids, including alterations of their behavior, ultimately leading to modifications in their functional role. Here, experimental infections were used to assess the effect of two temperatures on several traits of the association between Gammarus pulex and its acanthocephalan parasite Pomphorhynchus laevis. Elevated temperature affected hosts and parasites in multiple ways (decreased host survival, increased gammarids activity, faster parasites development and proboscis eversion). However, behavioral manipulation was unaffected by temperature. These results suggest that predicted change in temperature may have little consequences on the trophic transmission of parasites through changes in manipulation, although it may modify it through increased infection success and faster parasites development.
