Semigenetta Helbing, 1927 is a small genet-like carnivoran in the family Viverridae Gray, 1821. The genus has a modest diversity in the Miocene of Eurasia. With its first documentation going back to 1850s, the European records are relatively continuous with five currently recognized species. Asian records have a much shorter history of studies with its first record, S. huaiheensis Qiu & Gu, being published in 1986. In the present paper, we review the Asian records of Semigenetta from China and Thailand, which so far are represented by three species based on fragmentary jaws and teeth. We recognize two new species, S. qiae n. sp. from the late Miocene (c. 6.2-6.9 Ma) of Lufeng Basin in central Yunnan Province, South China and S. thailandica n. sp. from the middle Miocene (13.4-13.2 Ma) of Mae Moh Basin in Lampang Province, northern Thailand. Zoogeographically, both S. huaiheensis and S. thailandica n. sp. seem traceable to their European ancestors, as independent immigration events. Semigenetta thailandica n. sp. may have given rise to S. qiae n. sp., i.e., S. thailandica n. sp. and S. qiae n. sp., both recovered from lignitic sediments, potentially form a southeast Asian clade. All Asian Semigenetta occur within the Oriental zoogeographic province, and like their European counterparts, presumably prefer warm, humid, and wooded environments. Their relatively conservative morphology and low diversity seem also indicative of a stable environment in subtropical refugia. This article that forms part of a Special Section on 'Invisible Privilege in Asia' is committed to expanding the theoretical debates in race and ethnic studies, which has been previously critiqued as a field that has focused more on the gathering of empirical observations than the development of theory. This critique is even more pronounced within the realm of studying race and ethnicity in Asia, where research is often siloed within the contexts of national boundaries and area studies. While national, sub-regional and other specificities exist, here we provide a framework that identifies particular practices and structural processes that are best understood as indicative of a form of invisible, or latent 'privilege'. In paying attention to the geographical and historical specificities of how privilege functions, this article seeks not to uncritically impose a definition, but understand how and when 'privilege' provides a useful analytical framework in the absence of, or in collusion with, other explanatory mechanisms. Cet article met l’accent dans une première partie sur les quatre principaux jeux qui rassemblèrent les Grecs d’Europe et d’Asie. Ces quatre concours majeurs étaient les jeux olympiques, les jeux isthmiques, les jeux pythiques et les jeux néméens. En outre, il souligne la conclusion des trêves qui étaient considérées comme une condition incontournable pour l’organisation de ces jeux. Dans une seconde partie, l’étude montre que des Grecs venaient de toutes les cités pour participer aux jeux. Elle mentionne également l’honneur autant un athlète qu’une cité tirait d’une victoire pendant ces jeux. Enfin, l’étude aborde le fait que les jeux furent des occasions pour renforcer les liens de parenté culturelle entre les cités grecques et des occasions pour des négociations diplomatiques.

Scholars have documented the challenges of combining wage work and care responsibilities in various societal contexts. National variations reveal that public policy and care infrastructure have major effects in shaping gendered patterns, class inequalities, as well as overall wellbeing of parents. Childcare centers and schools can enable people with children to pursue jobs and careers. Yet, as I show in this article, education systems' demands can become a major component of parental care labor. Drawing on interviews with 92 parents in Singapore, I illustrate the ways in which education care labor impedes work-life reconciliation as well as deepens the significance of gender and class. Après avoir constaté une certaine stagnation de la situation actuelle de l'Église, il considère que l'un des plus grands défis de la théologie réside dans la transmission de la foi à nouvelles générations, dans des circonstances très différentes des précédentes. D’un point de vue contextuel, le défi est renforcé par la présence croissante de nouvelles confessions et sectes chrétiennes sur le territoire, ainsi que par les effets de la pandémie. Le futur proche sera marqué par l’impact de l’intelligence artificielle et du mouvement synodal dans l’Église.

In this interview with Jean-Pierre Bouchard, demographers Michel Garenne and Nancy Stiegler explore sex-preferences for girls or boys expressed by women who responded to DHS surveys in twenty-nine African and ten Asian countries. The IPUMS/DHS database was used for statistical analysis, bringing together 140 surveys and 2.5 million women aged 15–49. Overall, two-thirds of women were in favour of a balanced number of girls and boys or were indifferent to the composition of the family. In 20.8% of cases they preferred to have more boys, and in 12.6% of cases they preferred to have more girls. These proportions vary considerably between countries, and were influenced by local culture, religion, level of education, household wealth, and to a smaller extent by urban residence. Sex preferences were also influenced by family composition. These preferences are likely to change rapidly over time. Among the countries analysed, eight expressed preferences for more girls, all located in sub-Saharan Africa, and particularly in southern Africa. Over half of the growing global stroke-mortality burden is accounted for by the East-Asian-subcontinent alone. Sex differences in stroke-mortality in the Asian population is yet to be assessed in the literature. We aimed to assess the sex-differences in mortality following stroke in a large cohort of Thai-patients. All stroke admissions between 2004–2015 were included from the Thailand public-health-insurance-database. The association between sex and mortality was assessed in-hospital, at 1 month, 1 year and 5 years, using multivariable Cox-regressions, separately for ischaemic-stroke (IS), haemorrhagic-stroke (HS) and stroke-of-undetermined-type(SUT), adjusting for confounders. 608,890 patients were included: 370,527 patients with IS(60.9%), 173,236 with HS(28.5%) and 65,127 with SUT(10.6%). Women were older than men in all three groups and had higher prevalence of comorbidities. Adjusted hazard-ratios(HRs) of mortality showed women had higher mortality post-IS compared to men (in-hospital: HR: 1.20; 95% CI: 1.17–1.23; 1 month: HR: 1.17; 95% CI: 1.15–1.20; 1 year: HR: 1.10; 95% CI: 1.09–1.12 and 5 years: HR: 1.02; 95% CI: 1.01–1.03). Women also had higher mortality after HS (in-hospital: HR: 1.02; 95% CI: 1.00–1.04; 1 month: HR: 1.08; 95% CI: 1.06–1.10; 1 year: HR: 1.04; 95% CI: 1.03–1.06 and 5 years: HR: 1.09; 95% CI: 1.08–1.11), and SUT (in-hospital: HR: 1.04; 95% CI: 1.03–1.06; 1 month: HR: 1.20; 95% CI: 1.14–1.27; 1 year: HR: 1.14; 95% CI: 1.09–1.18 and 5 years: HR: 1.06; 95% CI: 1.03–1.10). Compared to men, women were older at time of stroke-diagnosis and had higher burden of stroke risk-factors. Women also had higher mortality after stroke regardless of stroke-type or duration since stroke-onset. Post-IS, excess stroke-mortality in women was greatest during the in-hospital period, whereas excess stroke-mortality increased with time in women who had HS. L’augustin portugais Sebastião Manrique a beaucoup voyagé dans toute l’Asie, entre 1629 et 1643, à l’époque de l’union des couronnes ibériques. Après une période de mission au Bengale et à Arrakan, il s’est rendu aux Philippines et à Macao, en passant par la Cochinchine. De nouveau au Bengale, et ayant l’intention de retourner en Europe, il décide de suivre les routes terrestres, à travers les territoires contrôlés par les Mogores, les Safavides et les Ottomans, jusqu’à atteindre les rives de la Méditerranée, et de là, Rome. Dans cette ville italienne il publie en 1649, en castillan, un compte rendu détaillé de ses longs voyages, l’Itinerario de las missiones, qui aura une deuxième édition quatre ans plus tard. L’œuvre de Manrique traite de manière très documentée de nombreuses régions asiatiques peu fréquentées par les autres voyageurs européens, presque toutes en dehors de la sphère d’action du soi-disant Estado da Índia (État portugais de l’Inde). Le présent texte explorera différents aspects de l’Itinerario, et en particulier sa genèse et les sources qu’il utilise, comme la célèbre Peregrinaçam de Fernão Mendes Pinto, ainsi que son large éventail d’informations sur le soi-disant shadow empire des Portugais en Asie du Sud-Est.

The introduction to this special issue considers the interdisciplinary study of religious sentiments, religious care and social actions during the COVID-19 outbreak in South-, East- and Southeast Asia. Our approach in terms of nodes and polarisation allows one to visualise a bundle of religious and secular actors and interests, as well as original strategies and actions, in time of pandemic, which sometimes challenge local regimes of truth and authority. In many cases, faith-based NGO s have been complementing the State, activating their powerful channels of mission in urban and rural areas, under the guise of combating COVID-19 crisis. The studies presented here examine several Asian religious actors during this period of COVID-19 crisis; and the ways in which their creative digitalised measures of worship, protection and healing, and their participation in urgent public health and care provisions, have given them the opportunity to renegotiate their relationships with States and societies. To date, most debates about transdisciplinarity (TD) have been dominated by Western institutions. This paper proposes insights from the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN), Kyoto, Japan, from an investigation as a visiting scientist. After describing its unique project-based organization, I first show that the development of TD at RIHN faces some common challenges, such as TD evaluation, education and upscaling (beyond local contexts). Yet, collaborations with stakeholders have also unique specificities (importance of the group, rigidity of institutions, different ways of interacting...). Moreover, most RIHN researchers claim to have a particularly practical approach to TD. At the level of the whole institute, RIHN gives a strong emphasis on the premise that environmental problems are rooted in human cultures and values. RIHN also develops a specific approach to scales, in which Asia serves as a nodal point between the local and global ('Asia vision'). We suggest that RIHN's emphasis on cultural roots and its nodal approach to scale might be themselves rooted in the Japanese culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Joanna Bator is a contemporary writer, who has in recent years become increasingly popular not only among readers but also with critics. As an expert of culture and a scholarship winner of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the Japan Foundation, she visited Tokyo three times. Published in 2004 (reprint 2011), Japoński wachlarz [The Japanese Fan] is the result of Bator's Asian travels. The Japanese Fan is a personal and subjective recording of the experience of cultural otherness that feels an European, Polish, writer while working as a lecturer at the University of Tokyo. In this book, Joanna Bator use an original creative technique she calls: zuihitsu, "as the brush guides." Migration stands as a livelihood strategy for households in Southeast Asia. Recent literature calls for the study of migration at the household level and for the consideration of care needs among the determinants of migration. Based on the case of Vietnam, this article contributes to past research by providing a longitudinal analysis of how household care needs may influence the use of internal migration as a livelihood strategy. Using a household life-course perspective that recognizes how family care needs evolve over time, this article tests if care needs influence the propensity for a household to have one or more new member-out-migrants over time. We operationalize care needs through the household dependency ratio, health care and education expenditures. Multivariate analyses are based on longitudinal data from three passages of the Vietnam Living Standards Survey of 2010, 2012, and 2014. Results indicate that households needing to cover costs of children's education are more likely to engage in migration than those with health care needs. These results reinforce the idea that migration requires certain conditions to occur and that the immediate care needs that require co-presence tend to prevent, rather than incite, migration at the household level. Overall, the analysis indicates that evolving care needs and household members' capacities to provide for modify the way households organize and deploy their workforce over space and time. L’espace théâtral du XVIIIe siècle est marqué par la division entre les théâtres « privilégiés » (Comédie-Française, Comédie-Italienne et Opéra) d’un côté et le Théâtre de la Foire de l’autre. Parmi toutes les foires parisiennes à l’époque des Lumières, les deux foires les plus fructueuses au niveau de la création théâtrale sont : la Foire Saint-Laurent et la Foire Saint-Germain. Après sa rupture avec la Comédie-Française, le grand maître de la Foire Alain-René Lesage (1668 – 1747) crée majoritairement pour les foires mentionnées ci-dessus. A l’opposé de la tragédie, où l’action se déroule impérativement en Grèce ou en Rome antiques, Lesage place entre autres l’action de ses pièces dans les pays « exotiques ». Dans cette étude, on se penchera surtout sur les pièces (pièce à écriteaux ou opéra-comique) de Lesage, dont l’action se déroule en Asie : Arlequin, roi de Serendib (1713), Arlequin, Mahomet (1714) et La Princesse de la Chine (1729).

Landfowl (order Galliformes) are among the most characteristic birds of the modern avian faunas, but their early evolutionary history is insufficiently known. The diversity of previously described Eocene galliforms implies a great role of Eocene diversification in the early evolution of this group. However, almost nothing is known about the Eocene diversity of galliforms in Asia, even though this large continent with a variety of habitats might have played a significant role in their early evolution. Here we describe a partial coracoid from the Lutetian–Bartonian of Uzbekistan, which is the oldest diagnosable galliform bird in Asia, and is further the first landbird known from this geographical area. The specimen displays a unique morphology with few autapomorphies and an unexpected combination of similarities with the African genus Scopelortyx and Eurasian Paraortyx , and hence is described as a new taxon, Xorazmortyx turkestanensis gen. et sp. nov., within the extinct family Paraortygidae, being the first Asian representative of this clade. Similarities with the African genus Scopelortyx indicate a connection of land bird faunas between northern Africa/Arabia and Asia in the middle Eocene. Better dispersal abilities of the early galliforms Paraortygidae are inferred from the osteology of their pectoral girdle and the humerus, which do not show adaptations to the powerful burst take off (escape flight), characteristic of most modern Phasianidae.
