RésuméAu sein de l’enseignement de l’oral, il est souvent difficile de convaincre les didacticiens du français qu’un recours à la phonologie et à la phonétique faisant place à la variation et la diversité des usages est possible et souhaitable. Pourtant, dès la fin du 19èmesiècle, une autre pratique était défendue par des jeunes phonéticiens dont Paul Passy, auteur desSons du français(1887) et coordinateur de la mise en place de l’API. Passy, à cause de ses engagements socio-politiques et religieux, de sa défense souvent mal comprise de l’API et de son combat pour la réforme de l’orthographe, est fréquemment relégué à une place relativement mineure dans l’histoire de la phonétique du français. Nous démontrons ici que les nombreuses révisions desSons du françaisfourmillent de descriptions fines et de remarques sur des changements en cours qui, dans bien des cas, seront redécouverts dans la deuxième partie du 20èmesiècle sans mention de son travail. Nous abordons alors la question de la norme et l’attachement de Passy à la variation et montrons sa modernité à travers son traitement de la prosodie, des unités distinctives, des réalisations allophoniques et de la transcription phonétique.

The contributions assembled in this volume are devoted to Trudel Meisenburg and address central aspects of her research: language contact, variation and change. The individual papers testify the growing interest in complex heterogeneous and hybrid language constellations and show the explanatory power of linguistic theories which account for contact-induced variability in empirical data. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes sind Trudel Meisenburg gewidmet und gruppieren sich um die zentralen Themen ihrer Forschung: Sprachkontakt, Variation und Wandel. Die Beiträge bezeugen das neue Interesse für komplexe heterogene und hybride sprachliche Situationen und zeigen die Leistungsfähigkeit einer für kontaktbedingte Variabilität offenen linguistischen Theoriebildung auf.

Dans cet article, nous nous interessons aux contours de finalite d'enonces declaratifs produits par des locuteurs norvegiens dont le francais est la L3 et l'anglais la L2. Le norvegien a la particularite de presenter un contour intonatif montant dans ce contexte. Nous montrons que les apprenants norvegiens tendent a transferer ce contour en francais mais que le fait d'avoir acquis le contour descendant de l'anglais peut, dans certains cas, faciliter son acquisition en francais.

The chapter starts out with a reminder of the essential distinction between objective, prescriptive, and subjective norms. It goes on to summarize the main historical stages in the emergence of a standard in metropolitan France, its expansion in scope, and the rise of multi-centric norms beyond the Hexagon, illustrated with the vowel inventories typical of Belgian French, Swiss French, Midi French, Central-African French, and Laurentian French. The second half of the chapter shifts from a production-oriented to a perception-oriented approach to the spoken norm, and reports the results of recent studies in French perceptual dialectology, some of which were carried out within the PFC project (Phonology of Contemporary French). It concludes that Reference French(es) do exist, but may vary depending on the communities and the objectives at stake.

Cet article envisage l’evolution de la norme du francais parle a l’Ile Maurice au sein du groupe des ”Gens-de-Couleur”. Notre travail est developpe dans le cadre du programme Phonologie du Francais Contemporain, participant ainsi au renouveau des donnees phonologiques analysees il y a plus de vingt ans. Traditionnellement, on distingue trois varietes de francais dans l’ile, deux francais endogenes qui s’opposent par leur statut sociolinguistique, et une variete exogene. Notre etude porte sur deux locutrices d’âge et de parcours professionnel differents, qui pratiquent la variete dite endolingue de prestige, mais dont les usages et les attitudes face a la langue se revelent fort distinctes. Nous examinons en particulier la prononciation des voyelles au contact de la rhotique ainsi que l’amuissement et la disparition de la consonne a l’interieur du groupe obstruante + R. Nous montrons que l’un des marqueurs decrits comme prestigieux (l’anteriorisation du /o/ devant R : Meurice), est absent chez les deux locutrices alors que l’anteriorisation du /a/ (perler pour parler) ne se fait qu’a mi-chemin, la voyelle etant centralisee. Nous observons egalement ce qui ressemble chez l’une des locutrices a l’adoption de la norme exogene dans sa prononciation des groupes obstruante + R. Ceci semblerait indiquer que les trois varietes de francais convergent vers une meme norme.

French liaison has long been a favourite testing ground for phonological theories, a situation which can undoubtedly be attributed to the complexity of the phenomenon, involving in particular phonology/syntax, phonology/morphology, phonology/lexicon interfaces. Dealing with liaison requires stepping into all the components of the grammar, while at the same time tackling the quick sands of variation. The data on which a number of formal analyses are based have often been a source of concern since liaison, in part because of its intrinsic variable character, requires extensive and robust data. In the wake of the results from the study of other corpora, we present here extensive results based on the PFC database (Phonologie du français contemporain: usages, variétés et structures) and point to their implications for models of linguistic structure. While we do not believe that a motivated theoretical account can be mechanically extracted from the data, we conclude that future analyses will have to take explicitly into account the results of extensive corpus work as well as sociolinguistic surveys, acquisition studies, experimental phonetics and (neuro-)psycho-linguistic investigations, including the relationship between speech and writing. As stressed in Chevrot, Fayol and Laks (2005), these analyses will have to acknowledge that French liaison is not a homogeneous locus but a multi-faceted phenomenon requiring us to accept, without demur, the crossing of disciplinary boundaries.

Depuis le Sound Pattern of English, la phonologie générative est devenue le modèle dominant. Pourtant, les travaux générativistes récents sont parfois très éloignés de ce qui a pu caractériser l’époque SPE. En même temps, certains concepts, idées, problèmes continuent à traverser les travaux des phonologues, et savoir s’il y a rupture ou continuité est une question difficile et controversée. Nous pensons que la phonologie est une discipline cumulative et offrons ici un panorama historique et critique. La montée du concept de contrainte, désormais central en phonologie, est expliquée, illustrée et évaluée à partir de deux modèles : la TCSR (Théorie des contraintes et stratégies de réparation) et la TO (Théorie de l’optimalité)., Ever since The Sound Pattern of English, generative phonology has become the dominant model. However, the issues raised in recent generative work are often far removed from the preoccupations of phonologists in the post-SPE phase. At the same time, a number of concepts, ideas and problems appear to be of recurrent interest, and it is a vexed question whether or not there is real continuity. Our own approach stresses the idea of phonology as a cumulative discipline and thus we present a historical and critical overview. The rise of the concept of ‘constraint’, now at the core of phonological theory, is explained, illustrated and evaluated on the basis of two models: the Theory of Constraints and Repair Strategies (TCRS) and Optimality Theory (OT).

Resume Nous abordons dans ce travail la place du mot dans la phonologie du francais. Nous montrons qu'un ensemble de phenomenes phonologiques conspirent a donner au mot une importance toute particuliere et nous etudions un nouveau type d'accentuation de plus en plus repandu chez les locuteurs francais qui prennent regulierement la parole en public. Apres avoir donne les caracteristiques de cet accent, que nous appelons accent initial, nous envisageons comment il influe sur certains domaines de la phonologie du francais, comme par exemple la liaison et la chute de schwa, modifiant aussi les regles de syllabation et la structure prosodique. Nous montrons enfin que la fonction principale de l'accent initial est de donner au mot une autonomie encore plus marquee.

Ce travail est dedie a l’identification et a la categorisation d’accents dans un francais langue seconde (c.-a-d. langue officielle et / ou langue d’enseignement) en Afrique subsaharienne. Sur la base d’une etude perceptive menee a partir d’enregistrements de 14 locuteurs maliens parlant 5 langues locales typologiquement differentes, nous tentons de determiner si 6 auditeurs maliens sont a meme d’identifier la langue premiere (L1) de leurs compatriotes et quels sont les facteurs qui influencent le taux de reconnaissance. Apres un bref rappel de la situation sociolinguistique au Mali, nous presentons la methodologie du test, ou 6 auditeurs sont appeles a se prononcer sur des extraits d’une minute de parole fournis par ces 14 locuteurs. Nous opposons les donnees phonologiques et acoustiques aux reflexions des auditeurs sur les traits discriminants des differents accents. Nous observons que si les langues premieres sont peu reconnues, la zone geographique ou elles sont parlees l’est beaucoup mieux. Un ensemble de traits discriminants facilitent la reconnaissance des L1, en particulier la prononciation des voyelles anterieures arrondies, la consonne rhotique et la prosodie. Nous etudions ensuite les facteurs sociolinguistiques qui influent sur le degre d’accent, diminuant sensiblement la possibilite de la reconnaissance de la L1. Nous observons que l’influence de la L1 sur le francais s’amuit proportionnellement au niveau d’education, a la longueur du sejour dans la capitale et a l’exposition au francais.

Cet article traite de la metathese du schwa en francais cajun, ayant lieu soit apres un groupe consonantique (grenier-gernier), soit apres un /r/ unique (retourner-ertourner). Grâce a une analyse prosodique a une dimension faisant appel uniquement a l'epenthese, l'A. montre que ces deux phenomenes sont deux aspects d'un meme processus, et que les differences de surface observees entre les deux types de metathese sont attribuees aux differences de poids syllabique

Dans ce travail, nous tenterons de definir le domaine du mot phonologique en cadien et nous montrerons que ce domaine joue un role crucial dans la phonologie de cette langue puisque c'est a ce niveau que l'accent est fixe et que c'est le domaine pertinent aussi bien pour la liaison que pour l'ensemble des schwas rythmiques. Nous verrons aussi que les caracteristiques prosodiques du cadien par rapport au francais standard ne rappellent pas un stade anterieur de la langue pas plus qu'ils ne representent un caique systematique de l'anglais et que le cadien reste bien une langue dont le rythme a une base syllabique.

This paper maintains that the extant transformational generative analyses of French glides have to be rejected not only because of their abstractness (complete naturalization rules) but also because they are inconsistent with the very principles of transformational generative phonology. A natural generative analysis is then proposed which questions the conditions put by natural generative phonology on underlying forms. The forms examined here show that there exist cases where the underlying representations of alternating morphemes are not identical to one of their phonetic realizations. Furthermore, it is also contended that Rudes' (1976) model for the description of different tempos (from slow to fast speech) is not totally adequate and in particular that the output of one tempo cannot be the input to the next, faster one.

The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of french schea deletion where, in agreemant with some basic principles of natural Generative Phonology, all rules are obligatory and not extrinsically ordered. This analysis is at variance with Dell's (1973) treatmant. It is contended that even if, as suggested by Rudes (1976), marking each phonological rule for applying only within a certain tempo can eliminate from the phonological component true optional rules, a certain amount of optionality must still be allowed within a rule. Furthermore, the nature of French schwa deletion forces us to reject rudes' model where the output of a tempo is the input to the next faster one.

International audience; This chapter is dedicated to the syntax of spoken French. Section 1, which focuses on ‘orality’, presents some phenomena related to ‘oral’ situational parameters with reference to spoken French: speech production processes, ‘ellipsis’, the use of deictics, and discourse markers. Section 2 considers whether we speak in sentences or not, and examines the use of tenses, moods, and voices in spoken French, the frequent non-use of negative ne, as well as the use of interrogative constructions. Section 3, entitled ‘Between syntax and discourse’, evokes the so-called ‘syntax of spoken French’, and mentions some preferred constructions in spoken French, i.e. left detachment (or dislocation) and presentational structures, before closing with a brief reflection on whether spoken French can be considered as an illustration of syntactic variation.

International audience; This chapter illustrates the variety of French in the Midi-Pyrénées region, more precisely in its capital, Toulouse in the Haute-Garonne department, where the selected male speaker was born in 1942 and still lives. The chapter is based on an informal three-party conversation between the speaker, his sister, and his daughter. What emerges is a well-attested phenomenon in southern France: the main speaker’s pronunciation is a conservative accent méridional while at the same time, lexically as well as syntactically, it exhibits absence of strong regional features.

International audience; This chapter offers an introduction to the study of phonological variation on the basis of a PFC survey of a small southern French village (Douzens, in Languedoc-Roussillon). The authors provide a database of ten speakers recorded using the PFC methodology, and show how it can be explored on the basis of the transcriptions and codings available in the PFC database. A number of areas are studied in detail: the simplification of consonant clusters, schwa deletion, and liaison. For each of these areas, variation is shown to be linked to parameters such as age, sex, occupation, and level of educational. The reader is systematically encouraged to double-check the investigation presented here against the Praat files and tools provided on the companion website to this book.

International audience; After a brief overview of the phonological and physical parameters of prosody and its main functions in language, this chapter presents the French prosodic system and its specificities with regard to other languages. The French accentuation system, phonetic characteristics of accentuation, and prosodic phrasing are presented in a metrical-descriptive framework, with explicit reference to the tight relationship between accentuation and constituency. This chapter also addresses the issue of the phonological status of accentuation in French. Phonostylistic prosodic variation is discussed with reference to the PFC corpus and the chapter provides the reader with a simple technique to perceptually locate independent, relevant prosodic cues in the corpus. The chapter concludes that comparing laboratory speech models with more spontaneous speech styles is a necessary step to refining those prosodic primitives and applying speech technologies, such as tools for automatic detection of prosodic events, to large corpora.
