The uncatalysed cycloaddition of substituted diaryldiazo compounds onto bicyclic unsaturated lactams derived from pyroglutamic acid efficiently leads to highly functionalised azatricyclononanes. The products are readily elaborated to deprotected pyroglutamate derivatives, providing rapid access to conformationally constrained amino acids and their analogues. Preliminary assessment of antibacterial activity against one Gram positive and one Gram negative organism indicated high levels of efficacy in some cases.

The title compound, [Ni(C13H11N4S2)2], was obtained by the reaction of S-2-picolyldi-thio-carbazate and pyridine-2-carbaldehyde with nickel(II) acetate. The Ni(II) atom is located on a twofold rotation axis and is bonded to four N atoms at distances of 2.037 (8) and 2.109 (9) Å, and to two S atoms at a distance of 2.406 (3) Å, leading to a distorted octa-hedral coordination. The angle between the mean planes of the coordinating moieties of the two symmetry-related tridentate ligands is 83.3 (2)°. In the crystal, complex mol-ecules are linked by weak C-H⋯S hydrogen bonds, π-π inter-actions between the pyridine rings [centroid-centroid distance = 3.775 (9) Å] and C-H⋯π inter-actions. The hydrogen-bonding inter-actions lead to the formation of layers parallel to (010); π-π inter-actions link these layers into a three-dimensional network.

Three new sterically demanding ligands based on the bispyrazolylacetic acid motif have been prepared and complexes with Fe(II), Fe(III), Ni(II) and Mn(II) have been synthesised and characterised. Single crystal X-ray structures are included for two of the ligands in the protonated form and ten other complexes. Additionally, a new general route to amide derivatives has been established, a range of amide derivatives synthesised and their coordination chemistry investigated. Only one metal complex was synthesised from the amide ligands, and was bound via the hydroxylamine groups in preference to the pyrazole and carboxylate donor set.

The synthesis and likely conformational structure of rigid spirocyclic bislactams and lactam-lactones derived from pyroglutamic acid, and their suitability as lead structures for applications in drug development programmes using cheminformatic analysis, has been investgated.

X-ray crystallographic analysis with Cu Kα radiation established the relative configurations of the stereogenic centers in the title compound, C(15)H(20)N(2)O(5), and clarified mechanistic ambiguities in the synthesis. The conformation of the five-membered ring approximates twisted, about a C-O bond. The absolute configuration of this carbon-branched dipeptide isostere was known based on the use of d-ribose as the starting material. Refinement of the Flack parameter gave an ambiguous result but the refined Hooft parameter is in agreement with the assumed (d-ribose) absolute structure. The crystal structure consists of N-H⋯O and O-H⋯O hydrogen-bonded bi-layers, with the terminal methyl and phenyl groups forming a hydro-phobic inter-layer inter-face. Some weak C-H⋯O inter-actions are also present.

Stable annulated diaminocarbene ligands 7,9-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-6b,9a-dihydroace naphtha[1,2-d]imidazolin-2-ylidene and 7,9-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-6b,9a-dihydroacenaphtho[1,2-d]imidazolin-2-ylidene; designated as (BIAN-SIMes, 5a,) and (BIAN-SIPr, 5b), respectively, have been prepared. The base dependent decomposition of imidazolinium salts via ring opening at the backbone was also observed. The corresponding rhodium(I) and iridum(I) complexes (4-1,5-COD)M(BIAN-SIMes)Cl and (4-1,5-COD)M(BIAN-SIPr)Cl; M= Rh (6a, 6b) and Ir (7a, 7b) have been synthesised by the reaction of free carbene with [M(4-1,5-COD)(-Cl)]2; where M= Rh, Ir. The cationic Ir(I) complexes [(4-1,5-COD)Ir(BIAN-SIMes)Py]BF4 8a and [(4-1,5-COD)Ir(BIAN -SIPr)Py]PF6 8b have also been synthesised. Compounds 4b, 5a, 6a, 6b, 7b and 8b have been structurally characterised. The catalytic activities for the rhodium(I) complexes 6a and 6b were evaluated for the hydroformylation of 1-octene.

Homobimetallic complexes of nickel, palladium and platinum, [(L2M)2(S2CNC4H8NCS2)]2+, are formed on reaction of the piperazine bis(dithiocarbamate) linker, KS2CNC4H8NCS2K, with [MCl2L2] (M=Ni, L2=dppe, dppf; M=Pd, L2=dppf; M=Pt, L=PEt3, PMePh2, PPh3, L2=dppf). [{Pd(C,N-C6H4CH2NMe2)}2(S2CNC4H8NCS2)] can be obtained in the same way. On reaction of [MCl2L2] (M=Pd, Pt) with the zwitterion S2CNC4H8NH2, a symmetrisation process occurs to yield a mixture of the complexes [M(S2CNC4H8NH2)L2]2+ and [(L2M)2(S2CNC4H8NCS2)]2+. However, the monometallic complexes [L2Ni(S2CNC4H8NH2)]2+ (L2=dppe, dppf) and [(L2Ni)2(S2CNC4H8NCS2)]2+ can be prepared without ready symmetrisation. Starting from the previously reported [(dppm)Ru(S2CNC4H8NH2)]2+, the heterotrimetallic products [(dppm)Ru(S2CNC4H8NCS2)M(dppf)]2+ (M=Pd, Pt) can be prepared without symmetrisation occurring. The crystal structures of five complexes are reported. The metalla-dithiocarbamate complexes [L2Ni(S2CNC4H8NCS2)] (L2=dppe, dppf) were used to functionalise the surface of gold nanoparticles by the displacement of a citrate shell to yield NiAu and FeNiAu materials.

A dithiocarbamate-based methodology is employed to prepare linked heteromultimetallic complexes and then further exploited in the surface functionalisation of gold nanoparticles.

A rhodium(I) catalyst incorporating the Me-DuPhos ligand promotes enantioselective intermolecular hydroacylation between beta-S-aldehydes and 1,3-disubstituted allenes. The nonconjugated enone products are obtained in good yields and with high enantioselectivities.

In situ resolution of the rapidly racemising diphosphine BIPHEP and its relatives with the cationic Rh complex of (S,S)-bicyclonona-2,6-diene permits the asymmetric hydrogenation of dehydroamino esters.

The title compound, C(21)H(26)O(10)S, was synthesized in a single step from mannose penta-acetate. The mol-ecular structure confirms the α configuration of the anomeric thioaryl substituent. Spectroscopic and melting-point data obtained for the title compound are in disagreement with those previously reported, indicating the previously reported synthesis [Durette & Shen (1980 ▶). Carbohydr. Res. 81, 261-274] to be erroneous. The crystal structure is stabilized by weak inter-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

3alpha,12alpha-dihydroxy-5beta-cholan-24-oic acid (deoxycholic acid DCA) is able to discriminate between the R- and S-enantiomers of camphorquinone and endo-(+)-3-bromocamphor and select only the S-enantiomers from a racemic mixture. DCA forms novel well ordered 1:1 adducts with (1S)-(+)-camphorquinone and (1S)-endo-(-)-3-bromocamphor, both of which have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD). When DCA is cocrystallized with (RS)-camphorquinone and (RS)-endo-3-bromocamphor, 1:1 adducts of the S-enantiomers are produced together with crystals of the free racemic guest. In contrast, in the absence of (1S)-(+)-camphorquinone, DCA forms a 2:1 adduct with (1R)-(-)-camphorquinone. In this 2:1 adduct the guest is disordered at ambient temperature and undergoes a phase change in the region 160-130 K similar to that observed for the ferrocene adduct, but with only partial ordering of the guest. The SXRD structure of the low temperature form and the variable temperature (13)C CP/MAS NMR are reported. Cocrystallizing DCA with (1R)-endo-(+)-3-bromocamphor gives the free guest and a glassy solid., (Copyright 2008 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

The ligands, PhPNXMe (1), PhPNXPh (2), and PhPNSMe (3), (PhPNX = 2-Ph2P-C6H4CH[double bond, length as m-dash]NC6H4X-2; X = O, S) have been prepared. A range of new ruthenium complexes were synthesised using these and related ligands, namely: [{RuCl(PhPNO)}2Cl] (4), [Ru(PhPNO)2] (5), [RuCl(PhPNXR)(PPh3)]BPh4 [X = O, R = Me (6); X = O, R = Ph (7); X = S, R = Me (8)], [{RuCl(PhPNX'R)}2Cl]X [X' = O, R = Me, X = Cl(-) (9); X' = S, R = Me, X = BPh4(-) or PF6(-) (10)], and [RuCl(PhPNO-eta 6C6H5)]BPh4 (11). The catalytic activity of these complexes with respect to the hydrosilyation of acetophenone and the hydrogenation of styrene has been investigated, giving an insight into the requirements for an active complex in these reactions.

A new family of heteroditopic calix[4]diquinone receptors capable of the cooperative recognition of ion-pair species through a contact binding mechanism has been developed. The receptors bind contact ion pairs cooperatively, with an unprecedented AND recognition phenomenon being observed to operate in certain cases, in which receptors display no affinity for either of the individual "free" cation or anion, but bind the cation and anion ion-pair strongly. X-ray crystallographic, solution-state, and computational methods rationalize the observed recognition behavior of the receptors. It is shown that the contact ion-pair interaction occurs through a pi-stacking-mediated folding of the receptors such that the anion and cation binding sites are arranged in close proximity, while in the solid state an unusual ion-mediated receptor dimerization is observed. Molecular dynamics simulations are further used to explain the observed trends in the association constants of different ion-pair species and the mechanism of interaction.

The Kiliani reaction on 1-de-oxy-(N,N-dimethyl-amino)-d-fructose, itself readily available from reaction of dimethyl-amine and d-glucose, proceeded to give access to the title β-sugar amino acid, C(15)H(27)NO(7). X-ray crystallography determined the stereochemistry at the newly formed chiral center. There are two mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit; they are related by a pseudo-twofold rotation axis and have very similar geometries, differing only in the conformation of one of the acetonide rings. All the acetonide rings adopt envelope conformations; the flap atom is oxygen in three of the rings, but carbon in one of them. There are two strong hydrogen bonds between the two independent mol-ecules, and further weak hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules to form infinite chains running parallel to the a axis.

The title compound, C(40)H(31)NO(11)S·0.53CH(2)Cl(2)·0.38C(4)H(10)O, was synthesized in two steps from mannose penta-acetate and single crystals were grown by slow evaporation. The structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, confirming the α-configuration of the anomeric thioaryl substituent. The asymmetric unit contains two crystallographically distinct mol-ecules of the carbohydrate. The central pyran-ose rings of these are geometrically similar, but there are differences in the orientations of the benzoate substituents.

This paper reports the synthesis of bimetallic zinc thiosemicarbazone complexes with rigid aromatic linkers, using either 1,3- or 1,4- benzenediamines or 1,3- or 1,4- benzenedialdehydes as the basis of the linking groups. Non-rigid aliphatic diamines and dialdehydes were also used to link the zinc chelating units. Reaction of a bis(thiosemicarbazone) with a pendant NHNH(2) group with monoaldehydes or ketones gives a range of monomeric complexes with exocylic imine groups bearing a range of substituents. The zinc complexes can be quantitatively and rapidly transmetallated to the corresponding copper complexes and this route or direct reaction with the free ligand can be used to radiolabel the monomeric species with (64)Cu. In vivo and in vitro studies of one of the (64)Cu imine complexes shows substantial hypoxic selectivity and high tumour uptake in a murine model.

Diiron complexes of fluorene and fluorene* (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9-nonamethylfluorene) have been found to be catalysts for the dechlorination of chlorinated aromatics, such as PCBs.

Whereas methylammonium chloride, [MeNH(3)]Cl, reacts with LiGaH(4) in an ether solution to give, according to the conditions, either the adduct MeH(2)N x GaH(3) or the cationic derivative [(MeH(2)N)(2)GaH(2)](+)Cl(-), the corresponding reaction of [MeNH(3)]Cl or [(t)BuNH(3)]Cl with LiAlH(4) proceeds mainly, with H(2) elimination, to the imidoalane Li(2)[(RN)(4)(AlH(2))(6)] (R = Me, 1, or (t)Bu, 2). The crystal structure of 1 x 2Et(2)O reveals, for the first time, anionic units with an adamantane-like Al(6)N(4) skeleton. The Li cations exist at two distinct sites, each linked via Li(mu-H)Al bridges to two [(MeN)(4)(AlH(2))(6)](2-) cages. Despite disordering of the tBu groups, the crystal structure of 2 evidently includes analogous anionic units. By contrast, the main product of the reaction between [(i)PrNH(3)]Cl and LiAlH(4) under similar conditions is the known neutral, hexameric imidoalane [(i)PrNAlH](6), 3, the crystal structure of which has been redetermined.

The structure of quinuclidine, HC(CH(2)CH(2))(3)N, has been re-investigated by quantum chemical calculations and by gas-phase electron diffraction (GED). The GED data, together with published rotational constants, have been analysed using the SARACEN method to determine the most reliable structure (r(h1)) for the gaseous molecule. The structures of two adducts of quinuclidine with group 13 trihydride molecules, MH(3) (M=B, Al), have also been determined by GED and quantum chemical calculations. The effect of the coordination of these hydrides to the quinuclidine nitrogen atom has been investigated, and the structural changes and energetics of adduct formation are discussed. We also present the crystal structure of quinuclidine borane.

Reaction of [ReOCl3(PPh3)(2)] with HCpz(3) (pz = pyrazole) in dichloromethane leads to the formation of a new Re(iv) complex [ReCl3(HCpz3)]X (X=Cl, [ReO4]) with loss of the rhenium-oxo group. We also report a convenient, high-yield synthetic route to complexes of the type [ReOXn(L)](3-n)+ (X=Cl, Br, n = 2, 3) by the reaction of bis(pyrazolylmethane) and bis(pyrazolylacetate) ligands with [ReOCl3(PPh3)2]. Dinuclear complexes containing the O=Re-O-Re=O group were also isolated and structurally characterised. We have also investigated the reactions of these ligands with diazenide precursors and isolated and characterised complexes of the type [ReClx(N2Ph) (L)(PPh3)] (x = 1,2). The potential applications of these complexes as radiopharmaeuticals is discussed.

Novel permethylated pentalenide anions are reported which offer exciting new opportunities for the future development of organometallic pentalene chemistry.

The reactions of N,N-substituted thiosemicarbazides with copper salts have been investigated and either copper(II) thiosemicarbazide complexes, 1,3,4-thiadiazolium salts or 1,3,5-thiadiazoles are obtained depending on the Cu(II) salt and solvent used.

The synthesis and characterization of the monomeric, two-coordinate transition-metal complexes (2,6-Mes(2)C(6)H(3))(2)M (Mes = mesityl, 2,4,6-Me(3)C(6)H(2), M = Mn, Fe, Co) are reported; (2,6-Mes(2)C(6)H(3))(2)Co is the first structurally authenticated two-coordinate, homoleptic cobalt(II) complex featuring sigma-bonded aryl ligands.

Two new types of unsymmetrical bis(thiosemicarbazone) proligands and their neutral zinc(II) and copper(II) complexes have been synthesized. These bifunctional ligands both chelate the metal ions and provide pendent amino groups that can be readily functionalized with biologically active molecules. Functionalization has been demonstrated by the synthesis of three water-soluble glucose conjugates of the new zinc(II) bis(thiosemicarbazonato) complexes, and their copper(II) analogues have been prepared in aqueous solution via transmetalation. A range of techniques including NMR, electron paramagnetic resonance, cyclic voltammetry, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), UV/vis, and fluorescence emission spectroscopy have been used to characterize the complexes. Four compounds, including two zinc(II) complexes, have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The connectivity and conformation of the glucose conjugates have been assigned by NMR spectroscopy. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations have been used to assign the electronic transitions of the copper(II) bis(thiosemicarbazonato) chromophore. Two copper-64-radiolabeled complexes, including one glucose conjugate, have been prepared and characterized using radio-HPLC, and transmetalation is shown to be a viable method for radiolabeling compounds with copper radionuclides. Preliminary cell washout studies have been performed under normoxic conditions, and the uptake and intracellular distribution have been studied using confocal fluorescence microscopy.

Zinc and copper bis(thiosemicarbazonato) complexes containing more than one metal centre have been prepared with a view to examining their application for molecular imaging. The zinc complexes are fluorescent with excitation and emission at relatively long wavelengths. The dinuclear copper complex undergoes two sequential, quasi-reversible reductions.

Two new bifunctional chelators that are derivatives of the bis(thiosemicarbazone) ATSMH(2) proligand have been prepared, one with two phenyl carboxylate substituents on the exocyclic nitrogens (L(1)H(2)) and one with a single phenyl carboxylate (L(2)H(2)). The new ligands have been characterised by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and in the case of L(1)H(2) by X-ray crystallography. The copper, nickel and zinc complexes of the new ligands have been synthesised and characterised. Electrochemical measurements show that the copper(II) complexes undergo a reversible reduction attributable to a Cu(II)/Cu(I) process. The new proligands have been tethered to the N-alpha-Boc-protected amino acids lysine and ornithine using solution and solid phase methods. The new amino acid conjugates form copper complexes and the complexes have been characterised by mass spectrometry and electronic spectroscopy. The bifunctional chelator L(2)H(2) has been conjugated to the tumour targeting peptide octreotide and the new ATSMH(2)-octreotide conjugate and its copper complex have been characterized by mass spectrometry. These new systems have the potential to be used for new targeted copper radiopharmaceuticals for imaging and therapy.

The reaction of the mono-diazenide core, [ReCl2(NNC6H(4)-4-OCH3)(NCCH3)(PPh3)2], with four equivalents of the sodium or potassium salts of dithiocarbamate (dtc) ligands gives neutral complexes of the formula [Re(NNC6H(4)-4-OCH3)(dtc)2(PPh3)]. It is possible to use a wide range of dithiocarbamate ligands (S2CNRR') with a variety of R groups (R=R'=methyl, phenyl or ethyl; R=methyl, R'=phenyl and R=R'=morpholino). Substitution reactions with dtc ligands on the mono-diazenide derived from 2-hydrazinopyridine, [ReCl2(NNC5H4N)(PPh3)2, give the analogous complexes, [Re(NNC6H5N)(dtc)2(PPh3)]. The new complexes have been characterised by a combination of NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography. Cyclic voltammetry measurements in dimethyl formamide show that the rhenium diazenido-dtc complexes undergo a quasi-reversible oxidation tentatively assigned to a ReIII/ReIV oxidation. Since the parent complex, [ReCl2(NNC6H(4)-4-R)(NCCH3)(PPh3)2] can be prepared directly from perrhenate and readily derivatised with dtc ligands these complexes have potential relevance to the development of new therapeutic rhenium radiopharmaceuticals.

Herein we report on the synthesis and characterization of the first representative of a new class of gallium hydrides, namely [{GaCl(hpp)H}2] (hpp=1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro-2H-pyrimido[1,2-a]pyrimidate). Our X-ray diffraction data suggest the presence of weak H--H contacts between adjacent [{GaCl(hpp)H}2] molecules in the crystal. With the aid of quantum-chemical calculations, the pathway of its formation starting with the adduct H2ClGaNMe3 and the pyrimidine hppH were analyzed. [{GaCl(hpp)H}2] slowly decomposes at 25 degrees C, a process which presumably leads under H2 elimination to [{GaCl(hpp)}2]. Although we were not yet able to characterize [{GaCl(hpp)}2] experimentally, DFT calculations provide information about its likely structure. According to these calculations, the molecule features a Ga--Ga single bond.

A combined experimental and DFT study of the reactions of the titanium imido methyl cation [Ti(NtBu)(Me3[9]aneN3)Me]+ (4+) with AlMe3 and ZnMe2 is described. Reaction of 4+ with AlMe3 gave [Ti(NtBu)(Me3[9]aneN3)(mu-Me)2AlMe2]+ (7+), the first structurally characterized AlMe3 adduct of a transition metal alkyl cation and a model for the presumed resting state in MAO-activated olefin polymerizations. Reaction of 4+ with ZnMe2 also gave a methyl-bridged heterobinuclear species, namely [Ti(mu-NtBu)(Me3[9]aneN3)(mu-Me)2ZnMe]+ (8+), the first directly observed ZnMe2 adduct of a transition metal alkyl cation. At room temperature, all three metal-bound methyls of 8+ underwent rapid exchange with those of free ZnMe2, whereas at 233 K only the terminal Zn-Me group exchanged significantly. Addition of AlMe3 to 8+ quantitatively formed 7+ and ZnMe2. Reaction of 4+ with Cp2ZrMe2 gave [Ti(NtBu){Me2(mu-CH2)[9]aneN3}(mu-CH2)ZrCp2]+ (10+) via a highly selective double C-H bond activation reaction in which both alkyl groups of Cp2ZrMe2 were lost. DFT calculations on models of 7+ confirmed the approximately square-based pyramidal geometries for the bridging methyl groups. Calculations on 8+ found that the formation of the Ti(mu-Me)2Zn moiety is assisted by an Nimide-->Zn dative bond. DFT calculations for the sterically less encumbered methyl cation [Ti(NMe)(H3[9]aneN3)Me]+ found strong thermodynamic preferences for adducts featuring Nimide-->M (M = Al or Zn) interactions. This offers insight into recently observed structure-productivity trends in MAO-activated imido-based polymerization catalysts. Calculations on the metallocenium adducts [Cp2Ti(mu-Me)2AlMe2]+ and [Cp2Ti(mu-Me)2ZnMe]+ are described, each showing alpha-agostic interactions for the bridging methyl groups. For these systems and the imido ones, the coordination of AlMe3 to the corresponding monomethyl cation is ca. 30 kJ mol-1 more favorable than for ZnMe2.

Imidazolium groups have been successfully incorporated into the structure of a "picket fence" porphyrin molecule to produce a novel tetra-imidazolium zinc metalloporphyrin anion receptor. UV/visible spectroscopic studies reveal that this receptor is selective for sulfate anions, capable of strongly complexing sulfate in competitive water-DMSO (5 : 95) solvent mixtures. Cyclic and square wave voltammetric studies demonstrate the receptor's ability to sense a variety of anions electrochemically.

The interweaving of two identical acyclic positively charged anion recognizing units around a chloride anion template leads to the formation of an orthogonal supramolecular ensemble which upon subsequent double ring cyclization gives a chloride selective [2]catenane in very high yield.

The N-heterocyclic-carbene containing cobalt carbonyl compound [Co(IMes)(CO)3(Me)] (IMes = 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-imidazol-2-ylidene), 1, has been synthesised by tertiary phosphine displacement from [Co(PPh3)(CO)3(Me)]. Subsequent carbonylation afforded the acyl derivative [Co(IMes)(CO)3(COMe)], 2. Similarly, the compound [Co(IMes)(CO)3(COEt)], 3, has been synthesised. The compounds 2 and 3 have been shown to react with dihydrogen to form the cobalt hydride compound [Co(IMes)(CO)3(H)], 4. The molecular structures of compounds 1 and 2 have been determined.

One-pot reactions of V(NMe2)4 with a range of primary alkyl- and arylamines RNH2 and Me3SiCl afforded the corresponding five-coordinate vanadium(4+) imido compounds V(NR)Cl2(NHMe2)2 [R = 2,6-C6H3(i)Pr2 (1a, previously reported), 2-C6H4(t)Bu (1b), 2-C6H4CF3 (1c), (t)Bu (1d), Ad (Ad = adamantyl, 1e)]. The crystal structures of 1b (two diamorphic forms) and 1c featured N-H...Cl hydrogen-bonded chains. Reaction of 1a-e with the neutral face-capping, N3 donor ligands TACN (TACN = 1,4,7-trimethyltriazacyclononane) or TPM [TPM = tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)methane] gave the corresponding six-coordinate complexes V(NR)(TACN)Cl2 (2a-e) and V(NR)(TPM)Cl2 (3a-e). The X-ray structures of 2b, 2c, 2d, 3b, 3c, and 3e were determined. When activated with methylaluminoxane, certain of the complexes V(NR)(TPM)Cl2 (3) formed moderately active ethylene polymerization catalysts, whereas none of the compounds V(NR)(TACN)Cl2 (2) were active.

The enzymatic desymmetrization of 2,2- and 2,5-disubstituted pyrroline compounds is reported in a procedure which gives access to both enantiomers in excellent enantiomeric excess and good yield. The enzyme reaction precursors are formed easily from two readily available substituted pyrroles using both ammonia (Na/NH3) and ammonia-free (Li/DBB) Birch reduction conditions.

The compound [Fe(eta-C5H5)(CO)2(Me)] reacts thermally with N-heterocyclic carbenes (L) to give both alkyl, [Fe(eta-C5H5)(L)(CO)(Me)], and acyl, [Fe(eta-C5H5)(L)(CO)(COMe)], derivatives. The reaction temperature has been shown to affect the product distribution. The alkyl and acyl derivatives exist in an equilibrium that is more easily perturbed than in the tertiary phosphine analogues. DFT studies on the reactivity of [Fe(eta-C5H5)(CO)2(Me)] with PH3 and dihydroimidazole-2-ylidene (IH) have shown that CO exchange is energetically favoured for IH, and energetically disfavoured for PH3. The products of CO-induced migratory insertion, [Fe(eta-C5H5)(L)(CO)(COMe)], are more stable than the parent alkyl, [Fe(eta-C5H5)(L)(CO)(Me)], compounds. This stabilisation is larger when L = IH than when L = PH3. Stabilisation of the transition state by agostic interactions was seen in both instances, but this was significantly more pronounced for L = IH.

The transition metal acyl compounds [Co(L)(CO)3(COMe)] (L = PMe3, PPhMe2, P(4-Me-C6H4)3, PPh3 and P(4-F-C6H4)3), [Mn(CO)5(COMe)] and [Mo(PPh3)(eta(5)-C5H5)(CO)2(COMe)] react with B(C6F5)3 to form the adducts [Co(L)(CO)3(C{OB(C6F5)3}Me)] (L = PMe3, 1, PPhMe2, 2, P(4-Me-C6H4)3, 3, PPh3, 4, P(4-F-C6H4)3), 5, [Mn(CO)5(C{OB(C6F5)3}Me)] 6 and [Mo(eta(5)-C5H5)(PPh3)(CO)2(C{OB(C6F5)3}Me)], 7. Addition of B(C6F5)3 to a cooled solution of [Mo(eta(5)-C5H5)(CO)3(Me)], under an atmosphere of CO gave [Mo(eta(5)-C5H5)(CO)3(C{OB(C6F5)3}Me)] 8. In the presence of adventitious water, the compound [Co{HOB(C6F5)3}2{OP(4-F-C6H4)3}2] 9, was formed from [Co(P(4-F-C6H4)3)(CO)3(C{OB(C6F5)3}Me)]. The compounds 4 and 9 have been structurally characterised. The use of B(C6F5)3 as a catalyst for the CO-induced migratory-insertion reaction in the transition metal alkyl compounds [Co(PPh3)(CO)3(Me)], [Mn(CO)5(Me)], [Mo(eta(5)-C5H5)(CO)3(Me)] and [Fe(eta(5)-C5H5)(CO)2(Me)] has been investigated.

2,4,6-trialkylbenzenethiols react with [RuCl2(PPh3)3] to give Ru products with the alkyl substituents forming M-C sigma bonds, carbene, carbene with a S alpha-heteroatom, agostic hydrogen interaction or a simple tetrahedral Ru(II) species, depending on the substituent.

A novel heteroditopic calix[4]diquinone receptor capable of binding an anion and cation simultaneously in a cooperative fashion is shown only to recognise halide anions in the presence of a suitable cobound cationic guest species, and displays affinity for certain ion-pairs where no affinity for either of the free ions is observed.

Ethylene polymerisation productivities of tris(pyrazolyl)methane-supported catalysts [Ti(NR){HC(Me2pz)3}Cl2] show a dramatically different dependence on the imido R-group compared to those of their TACN analogues, attributed to differences in fac-N3 donor topology; when treated with AliBu3, the zwitterionic tris(pyrazolyl)methide compound [Ti(N-2-C6H4tBu){C(Me2pz)3}Cl(THF)] also acts as a highly active, single site catalyst (TACN = 1,4,7-trimethyltriazacyclononane).

Two new thiosemicarbazone-pyridylhydrazine (THYNIC) hybrid ligands have been synthesized. Copper(II) and copper(I) complexes of the ligands have been prepared and characterized by X-ray crystallography. Cyclic voltammetry measurements show that the copper(II) complexes undergo quasi-reversible reductions at biologically accessible potentials. One of the ligands, bearing a pendant carboxylate arm, has been conjugated to N-alpha-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-L-lysine.

Reaction of the dimeric zirconium imido compound [Zr2(mu-NAr)2Cl4(THF)4] with tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)methyl silane very selectively gave [Zr{(Me2pz)2Si(Me)NAr}Cl3] (1), a highly active pre-catalyst for ethylene polymerisation; a more general and versatile route to N3 donor heteroscorpionate compounds was achieved via the protio ligand (Me2pz)2CHSi(Me)2N(H)iPr for which neutral and cationic organometallic Group 3 and 4 derivatives are reported (Ar = 2,6-C6H(3)iPr2).

New (tetrakis)imidazolium macrocyclic receptor systems of variable cavity size have been synthesised by stepwise alkylation reactions of bis(imidazolium) precursor compounds. Proton NMR titration studies reveal the macrocycles to strongly bind halide and benzoate anions, with two receptor systems displaying notable selectivity for fluoride in competitive acetonitrile-water (9:1) solvent media.
