Background This article presents a new method using a dermis-outer orbicularis fascia-orbicularis-levator (DOOL) fixation technique for double-eyelid blepharoplasty. Methods Our surgical technique preserves the preorbicular venous network (POVN) and uses mattress sutures to fix the dermis, outer fascia of the orbicularis oculi muscle, and orbicularis oculi muscle with pretarsal levator aponeurosis (DOOL). Between January 2016 and July 2018, 335 patients were treated with this POVN-preserving DOOL technique (321 women and 14 men; mean age, 29.6 y). The patients were followed up for 6-30 months. The complications were documented, and the overall outcomes of the upper eyelid folds were evaluated by both surgeons and patients as good, fair, or poor. Results Among 335 patients, 307 (91.6%) had good results, 17 (5.1%) had fair results, and 11 (3.3%) had poor results. Postoperative complications included partial (n=4) or complete (n=3) loss of the double-eyelid line and asymmetric folds (n=4). Hypertrophic/depressed scars did not occur. Conclusions With less invasiveness and secure internal fixation, the DOOL fixation technique with POVN preservation can achieve a stable and natural double-eyelid appearance. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of manganese (Mn) and Bacillus subtilis (BS) on the production performance, egg quality, antioxidant capacity, and gut microbiota of breeding geese during laying period. A total of 120 forty-six-week-old breeding geese (Wulong) were randomly assigned to 1 of 6 treatment diets formulated to supply 10, 20, and 30 mg/kg Mn with 5 × 109 CFU/kg or 2.5 × 109 CFU/kg BS for a 10-wk trial. Results showed that dietary supplementation with 20 and 30 mg/kg Mn could decrease the daily feed intake (DFI) of geese. Moreover, 30 mg/kg Mn significantly increased the laying rate. Besides, although Mn addition had no obvious effect on egg quality, 5 × 109 CFU/kg BS was found to elevate the hatching egg hatching rate and eggshell thickness. For the serum hormones, 30 mg/kg Mn promoted estradiol secretion, while 5 × 109 CFU/kg BS increased the level of follicle-stimulating hormone. Furthermore, 20 and 30 mg/kg Mn and 5 × 109 CFU/kg BS significantly enhanced the total antioxidant capacity by increasing the activity of total superoxide dismutases or decreasing the content of malondialdehyde. Dietary supplementation with 5 × 109 CFU/kg BS also increased the intestinal villus height and upregulated the abundance of Fusobacteria, Fusobacteriaceae, Fusobacterium, and Faecalibacterium in cecal content. In addition, 20 and 30 mg/kg Mn elevated the levels of Bacteroidetes, Bacteroidaceae, Bacteroides, and Ruminococcaceae but decreased Streptococcaceae. Importantly, an interaction effect was observed between Mn and BS on the DFI, egg mass, average egg size, and the abundance of Bacteroides as well as Faecalibacterium. In conclusion, dietary inclusion of Mn and BS could improve the production performance, egg quality, antioxidant capacity, intestinal structure, as well as gut microbiota. Supplementation of 30 mg/kg Mn and 5.0 × 109 CFU/kg BS provided the optimal effect.

The skin redraping method for medial epicanthoplasty is characterized by some shortcomings which warrants modification. In this study, clinical data of 193 patients who underwent medial epichanthoplasty by the modified skin redraping technique or the classic skin redraping technique were reviewed retrospectively. The patients underwent operation between May 2018 and June 2020 and were followed up for not less than 6 months. Interepicanthal distance, interpupillary distance, patient satisfaction, and postoperative complications were evaluated. In terms of interepicanthal distance/inter-pupillary distance ratio ( P0.05) and satisfaction score ( P = 0.759), the modified skin redraping technique and the classic skin redraping technique were similar. In the classic skin redraping group, there were 3 cases of visible scarring in the lower eyelid, corresponding to significantly more cases than in the modified skin redraping group (n = 0, P0.001). There were more out-fold cases in the modified skin redraping group (76/90) than in the classic skin redraping group (17/88) ( P0.001). Utilizing the modified skin redraping medial epicanthoplasty can prevent medial hooding of the upper eyelid, reduce the probability of visible scarring, and produce more out-fold with concurrent double eyelidplasty compared with classic skin redraping epicanthoplasty. Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes 2 (SMC2) and Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes 4 (SMC4) are the core components of the condensin complexes, which are required for chromosome assembly and faithful segregation during cell division. Because of the crucial functions of both proteins in cell division, much work has been done in various vertebrates, but little information is known about their roles in plants. Here, we identified ZmSMC2 and ZmSMC4 in maize (Zea mays) and confirmed that ZmSMC2 associates with ZmSMC4 via their hinge domains. Immunostaining revealed that both proteins showed dynamic localization during mitosis. ZmSMC2 and ZmSMC4 are essential for proper chromosome segregation and for H3 phosphorylation at Serine 10 (H3S10ph) at pericentromeres during mitotic division. The loss of function of ZmSMC2 and ZmSMC4 enlarges mitotic chromosome volume and impairs sister chromatid separation to the opposite poles. Taken together, these findings confirm and extend the coordinated role of ZmSMC2 and ZmSMC4 in maintenance of normal chromosome architecture and accurate segregation during mitosis.

Soil studies have reported the effect of Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) on soil microbial communities. However, how soil microbial communities and function shift after HCH addition into the red and purple soil remains unclear. Here, we analyzed the HCH residue fate, and the functional composition and structure of microbial communities to HCH in the two soils. Under the 100 g/ha and 1000 g/ha treatment, the dissipation rate of HCH was 0.0386 and 0.0273 in the purple soil, 0.0145 and 0.0195 in the red soil. The enrichment of HCH degrading genes leads to a higher HCH dissipation rate in the purple soil. PCoA results demonstrated that HCH addition has a different effect on the community diversity in the two soils, and Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria were the major phyla in the two soils. The soil microbiome average variation degree values of red soil were higher than purple soil, which indicated that the soil microbiome in the purple soil was more stable than in the red soil under HCH addition. PICRUSt2 results indicated that functional genes involved in the carbon, nitrogen biogeochemical cycles and HCH degradation were more tolerant to HCH addition in the purple soil. This study provides new insights into understanding of the effect of HCH addition on soil microbial communities and function in the red and purple paddy soil.

Using biomass wastes as adsorbents is a promising option for organic waste reclamation, but unfortunately, their adsorption capacity is usually limited, especially for hydrophobic organic pollutants. To address this issue, this work prepared cetylpyridinium chloride (a cationic surfactant)-modified pine sawdust (CPC-PS) and further demonstrated their performance for hydrophobic bisphenol A (BPA) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) adsorption. Compared to the PS, the CPC-PS improved the maximum adsorption capacity for BPA and DCP by approximately 98% and 122%, respectively. The kinetic and thermodynamic analyses showed that the BPA and DCP adsorption onto the CPC-PS fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich model. After regeneration using NaOH, the adsorption capacity of the CPC-PS for BPA still maintained 80.2% of the initial value after five cycles. Based on the experimental results, the CPC-PS was proposed to enhance the BPA and DCP adsorption through the solubilization of hemimicelles for hydrophobic organic pollutants, the π-π stacking between benzene-ring structures, and the hydrogen binding between the adsorbents and the pollutants. This work provides a viable method to use surfactant-modified pine sawdust as effective adsorbents to remove hydrophobic pollutants.

Forkhead box P3 (FOXP3) is a specific marker of regulatory T cells (Tregs) that is also expressed in tumour cells. Previous studies have revealed that FOXP3 can promote metastasis in several types of cancer, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC); however, the underlying mechanism of FOXP3 remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of FOXP3 on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and the Notch1/Hes1 pathway in NSCLC. After FOXP3 small interfering RNA (siRNAs) were transfected into A549 cells, the expression of FOXP3 mRNA and protein was determined by reverse transcription-quantitative PCR and western blotting. Cell migration and invasion were analyzed by Transwell assays. The concentrations of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2, MMP-9 and VEGF in the cell supernatant were evaluated by ELISA. The expression of relevant proteins involved in EMT and Notch1/Hes1 pathway were assessed via western blotting. Additionally, the expression of FOXP3, CD31 and E-cadherin was detected by immunohistochemical (IHC) staining of 55 human NSCLC tissue samples. The results demonstrated that FOXP3 knockdown significantly inhibited the cell migratory and invasive abilities, decreased the concentrations of MMP-2, MMP-9 and VEGF, downregulated the protein expression of vimentin, N-cadherin, Notch1 and Hes family BHLH transcription factor 1 (Hes1), and upregulated the protein expression of E-cadherin. Furthermore, FOXP3 expression was positively associated with CD31+ vascular endothelial cells and negatively correlated with E-cadherin in NSCLC tissues. In addition, the Notch1/Hes1 pathway inhibitor DAPT significantly downregulated the expression of FOXP3 in a dose-dependent manner. Taken together, these findings demonstrated that FOXP3 may facilitate the invasive and migratory abilities of NSCLC cells via regulating the angiogenic factor VEGF, the EMT and the Notch1/Hes1 pathway.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a usual disease caused by degeneration of the central nervous system, which features the denaturation and death of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra compact (SNc) of the midbrain. Neuroinflammation casts a consequential role in its pathogenesis, and the excessive activation of microglia as a major part of neuroinflammation cannot be ignored. Studies have indicated that Hordenine (HOR) functioned widely as an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory substance, but there are no reports on neuroinflammation effects. Therefore, this study is devoted to exploring the effect of HOR on neuroinflammation and its specific mechanism. In vivo, results revealed that HOR depressed the activation of microglia in SNc and protected dopaminergic neurons in the 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced PD rat model, which terminally reduced movement disorders and weight loss. In vitro, studies have shown that HOR can inhibit inflammatory responses triggered by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in BV-2 cells. More profound studies have discovered that the specific anti-inflammatory mechanism is intimately associated with the NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways. All in it together, HOR acts as a significant role in preserving dopaminergic neurons by restraining neuroinflammation mediated by activation of microglia. This may provide a potential drug for Parkinson's treatment.

Safranal (SFR), an active ingredient extracted from saffron, exhibits a protective effect on the cardiovascular system. However, the mechanism of SFR against hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R)-induced cardiomyocyte injury has previously not been investigated in vitro. The aim of the present study was therefore to observe the protective effects of SFR on H/R-induced cardiomyocyte injury and to explore its mechanisms. A H/R injury model of H9c2 cardiac myoblasts was established by administering 800 µmol/l CoCl2 to H9c2 cells for 24 h and reoxygenating the cells for 4 h to induce hypoxia. H9c2 cardiac myoblasts were pretreated with SFR for 12 h to evaluate the associated protective effects. A Cell Counting Kit-8 assay was used for cell viability detection, and the expression levels of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA) and caspase-3, and the intracellular Ca2+ concentration were measured using the corresponding commercial kits. Levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the cells were detected using 2,7-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate. Flow cytometry was used to determine the degree of apoptosis and the level of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP). Moreover, the expression levels of phosphorylated (p-)PI3K, AKT, p-AKT, glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β), p-GSK3β, Bcl-2, Bax, caspase-3 and cleaved caspase-3 were measured using western blot analysis. Results of the present study demonstrated that the H9c2 cardiac myoblasts treated with SFR exhibited significantly improved levels of viability and significantly reduced levels of ROS, compared with the H/R group. Furthermore, compared with the H/R group, SFR treatment significantly increased the MMP levels and antioxidant enzyme levels, including CAT, SOD and GSH-px; whereas the levels of CK-MB, LDH, MDA and intracellular Ca2+ concentration were significantly decreased. Moreover, the results of the present study demonstrated that SFR significantly reduced caspase-3, cleaved caspase-3 and Bax protein expression levels, but upregulated the Bcl-2 protein expression levels. SFR also increased the protein expressions of PI3K/AKT/GSK3β. In summary, the results suggested that SFR may exert a protective effect against H/R-induced cardiomyocyte injury, which occurs in connection with the inhibition of oxidative stress and apoptosis via regulation of the PI3K/AKT/GSK3β signaling pathway.

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) contribute to immune activity suppression and promote the tumor progression. Elimination of MDSCs is a promising cancer therapeutic strategy, and some chemotherapeutic agents have been reported to hamper tumor progression by suppressing MDSCs. Juglone has been showed to exert a direct cytotoxic effect on tumor cells. However, the effect of juglone on MDSCs and anti-tumor immune statue has remained unexplored. In our study, we observed that juglone suppressed tumor growth and metastasis markedly, and the tumor growth suppression in immunocompetent mice was more drastic than that in immunodeficient mice. Juglone reduced the accumulation of MDSCs and increased IFN-γ production by CD8+ T cells. Consistently, juglone affected myeloid cells differentiation and maturation, impairing the immunosuppressive functions of MDSCs. Moreover, juglone down-regulated the level of IL-1β which was mediating accumulation of MDSCs. In addition, juglone inhibited 5FU-induced liver injury in a colorectal carcinoma-bearing mice model. Thus, our work suggests that the anti-tumor effect of juglone is mediated, at least in part, by eliminating accumulation of MDSCs.

Chemerin and G protein-coupled receptor 1 (GPR1) are increased in serum and placenta in mice during pregnancy. Interestingly, we observed increased serum chemerin levels and decreased GPR1 expression in placenta of high-fat-diet-fed mice compared with chow-fed mice at gestational day 18. GPR1 protein and gene levels were significantly decreased in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) patient placentas. Therefore, we hypothesized that chemerin/GPR1 signaling might participate in the pathogenic mechanism of GDM. We investigated the role of GPR1 in carbohydrate homeostasis during pregnancy using pregnant mice transfected with small interfering RNA for GPR1 or a negative control. GPR1 knockdown exacerbated glucose intolerance, disrupted lipid metabolism, and decreased β-cell proliferation and insulin levels. Glucose transport protein-3 and fatty acid binding protein-4 were downregulated with reducing GPR1 in vivo and in vitro via phosphorylated AKT pathway. Taken together, our findings first demonstrate the expression of GPR1, the characterization of its direct biological effects in humans and mice, as well as the molecular mechanism that indicates the role of GPR1 signaling in maternal metabolism during pregnancy, suggesting a novel feedback mechanism to regulate glucose balance during pregnancy, and GPR1 could be a potential target for the detection and therapy of GDM.

In quasi-linear environments, classic theories state that it is possible to design efficient and incentive-compatible mechanisms, such as Vickrey, Clarke and Groves (VCG) mechanisms. However, once financial constraints are taken into account, we find that almost no financial constraint is compatible with efficiency and individual incentives over unrestricted domains and some restricted domains. Therefore, our results imply that even in quasi-linear environments, it is still impossible to design an efficient and incentive compatible mechanism because of financial constraints.

With the development of the digital economy, the price of Bitcoin, which is the most representative digital currency, has fluctuated dramatically. Recent works have explored the volatility of the Bitcoin price and made predictions using financial time series models such as ARIMA. However, for high-frequency Bitcoin data, the financial time series models have poor prediction performance as they often do not accommodate the inherent characteristics of digital currency, such as blockchain information. Some other works in this topic use deep learning models, e.g., artificial neural networks. However, the complex structure and time-consuming training process of these deep learning models often incur low prediction efficiency for rapidly changing Bitcoin price. In this regard, Broad Learning System (BLS) is a new neural network that avoids the complex structure of hidden nodes in deep learning models by adding enhancement nodes in the input layer to improve training efficiency while delivering relatively high accuracy. Therefore, this work applies the broad learning system to predict the Bitcoin price and optimizes the prediction model with a genetic algorithm. Due to the lack of fundamental factors for digital currency, the proposed prediction model considers the macroeconomic variables and the information of Bitcoin blockchain, which is the underlying technology of bitcoin, as inputs. According to the experimental results, the BLS-based prediction model optimized with the genetic algorithm achieved a better performance than other machine learning models.

Background For the patients seeking secondary upper blepharoplasty, a static double-eyelid fold featuring an immobile lower flap and depression of the fold is common. Objectives In this study, the authors propose a novel technique of reconstructing pretarsal tissue defects (PTDs) to converting static folds to dynamic folds. Methods A total of 203 patients with static folds underwent revision surgery. After complete adhesion release of the lower flap, a PTD was identified, which was defined as an area deficient of orbicularis oculi muscle in front of the tarsal plate. If the width of the PTD was over 2 mm, tissue transfer was performed to reconstruct the PTD, usually with a free retro-orbicularis oculus fat graft or a pretarsal orbicularis oculi flap. Results Among the 105 patients with severe static folds, 67 received retro-orbicularis oculus fat grafts and 38 received orbicularis oculi muscle flaps. This technique converted a static fold into a dynamic fold. The surgery satisfaction rate was 86.7%. Complications included partial fold loss (n = 7, 3.4%), complete fold loss (n = 3, 1.5%), sunken upper eyelids (n = 5, 2.5%), multiple folds (n = 3, 1.5%), an unnatural curve of the double fold (n = 5, 2.5%), and asymmetric folds (n = 4, 2.0%). Conclusions To convert a static fold to a dynamic fold, we devised a technique that releases adhesion of the lower flap and reconstructs the PTD with retro-orbicularis oculus fat graft or an orbicularis oculi muscle flap. Our study achieved a high patient satisfaction rate, and the resulting fold mimicked the dynamics of the congenital double-eyelid fold. Level of Evidence: 4

Cytoplasmic polyadenylation element-binding protein 3 (CPEB3) is a sequence-specific RNA-binding protein. We had reported that CPEB3 is involved in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression. However, the underlying mechanisms of CPEB3 in HCC remain unclear. In this study, we firstly performed RNA immunoprecipitation to uncover the transcriptome-wide CPEB3-bound mRNAs (CPEB3 binder) in HCC. Bioinformatic analysis indicates that CPEB3 binders are closely related to cancer progression, especially HCC metastasis. Further studies confirmed that metadherin (MTDH) is a direct target of CPEB3. CPEB3 can suppress the translation of MTDH mRNA in vivo and in vitro. Besides, luciferase assay demonstrated that CPEB3 interacted with 3′-untranslated region of MTDH mRNA and inhibited its translation. Subsequently, CPEB3 inhibited the epithelial–mesenchymal transition and metastasis of HCC cells through post-transcriptional regulation of MTDH. In addition, cpeb3 knockout mice are more susceptible to carcinogen-induced hepatocarcinogenesis and subsequent lung metastasis. Our results also indicated that CPEB3 was a good prognosis marker, which is downregulated in HCC tissue. In conclusion, our results demonstrated that CPEB3 played an important role in HCC progression and targeting CPEB3-mediated mRNA translation might be a favorable therapeutic approach.

Surface functional groups and graphitic carbons make up the electroactive components of pyrogenic carbon. The role of pyrogenic carbon with different contents of electroactive components in mediating electron transfer in biochemical reactions has not been systematically studied. Here, we determined the electron exchange capacity (EEC) of pyrogenic carbon to be 0.067-0.120 mmol e-·(g of pyrogenic carbon)-1, and the maximum electrical conductivity (EC) was 4.85 S·cm-1. Nitrobenzene was simultaneously reduced in both the liquid and sorbed phases by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 in the presence of pyrogenic carbon. Pyrogenic carbon did not affect the aqueous nitrobenzene reduction, and the reduction of sorbed nitrobenzene was much slower than that of the aqueous species. Enhancing contents of oxygenated functional moieties in pyrogenic carbon with HNO3 oxidation elevated bioreduction rates of the aqueous and sorbed species. Anthraquinone groups were deemed as the most likely oxygenated functional redox compounds on the basis of both voltammetric curve tests and spectroscopic analysis. The reactivity of pyrogenic carbon in mediating the reduction of sorbed nitrobenzene was positively correlated with its EC, which was demonstrated to be related to condensed aromatic structures. This work elucidates the mechanism for pyrogenic carbon-mediated biotransformation of nitrobenzene and helps properly evaluate the role of pyrogenic carbon in biogeochemical redox processes happening in nature.

This paper proposes a model of delegated portfolio management, in which professional fund managers face a value-at-risk (VaR) constraint. We show that the existence of the VaR constraint impairs the optimal risk sharing in both the trading and delegation stages. As a result, the VaR constraint leads household investors to take excessive risk and may cause the prices of fundamentally uncorrelated assets to be correlated.

An appropriate electrode material is crucial for two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, where a vanishing Schottky barrier is ideal but is a great challenge. Blue phosphorene (BlueP) is a promising 2D semiconductor for electronic and optoelectronic applications. Here, we report that Zr-, Hf-, and Nb-based 2D transition metal carbides (MXenes) are ideal electrode materials for BlueP based on extensive investigations of the electronic properties and interfacial Schottky barrier characteristics of BlueP/MXene heterojunctions by first-principles calculations. Our results show that the strong interaction between BlueP and bare MXenes destroys the semiconducting character of BlueP, and thus bare MXenes are not ideal contact electrodes. With the surface functionalization of MXene, the intrinsic electronic feature of BlueP is well preserved in the BlueP/surface-engineered MXene heterojunctions. The effects of the temperature, volatile content, and ash content on the volatilization kinetics of arsenic were discussed. Six Chinese coals were tested in an isothermal thermogravimetric reactor at 600–1300 °C. Sequential chemical extraction analysis was employed to know the speciation transformation of arsenic during coal combustion. Deep learning technology has been widely used in the financial industry, primarily for improving financial time series prediction based on stock prices. To solve the problem of low fitting and poor accuracy in traditional stock price prediction models, this paper proposes a stock price prediction model based on stock price synchronicity and deep learning methods, which applied the stock price synchronicity theory in stock price trend analysis. This paper first uses the affinity propagation algorithm to build stock clusters, and then, based on convolution neural network (CNN), and feature weight to construct the stock price synchronicity factor. At last, the long short-term memory (LSTM) network with multifactor is built for stock price trend analysis. According to the theory of stock price synchronicity, the affinity propagation algorithm can find the potential related stocks of the target stock. The spatial data analysis ability of the CNN model provides a guarantee for the application in stock price synchronicity factor analysis. The LSTM model can better analyze the information contained in the stock price time series and predict the future price. The experimental results show that, compared with the traditional multilayer neural network model, the LSTM model has better accuracy in the trend prediction of the stock price. Simultaneously, the application of stock price synchronicity effectively improves the performance of the multifactor LSTM network.
