What drives refugee movements? Focusing on host countries' domestic political institutions, we argue that refugee entry is determined by the political regimes that shape the incentives of both host governments and displaced persons. Specifically, we theorize that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between political regimes and the volume of refugee entries. When the host country is autocratic, refugee volume becomes smaller due to displaced persons' unwillingness to risk the high uncertainty of life under such regimes, and when the host country is democratic, refugee volume is similarly curbed due to democratic constraints on the host government. Consequently, a majority of refugees are clustered into anocratic regimes. Using a global dataset, a series of statistical analyses found strong evidence in support of our theoretical expectations regarding not only the hypothesized correlation between regime type and refugee movements but also the preferences of host governments and displaced persons that we theorize underlie this relationship. Introduction: Hypoxia-inducible factor-prolyl hydroxylase (HIF-PH) inhibitors, used in the treatment of renal anemia, hold the potential to increase the production of vascular endothelial growth factors. Therefore, HIF-PH inhibitors may exacerbate retinal hemorrhage in diseases such as diabetic retinopathy. Here, we present a case involving the administration of an HIF-PH inhibitor, resulting in the exacerbation of retinal hemorrhage in a patient with diabetic retinopathy. Case Presentation: A 32-year-old man with diabetes mellitus and renal anemia caused by diabetic nephropathy was referred to our department for ophthalmic examination, revealing diabetic retinopathy with scattered retinal hemorrhages, exudates, and diabetic maculopathy in both eyes. Darbepoetin alfa was initially administered and switched to the HIF-PH inhibitor roxadustat on day 74. By day 88, fresh retinal hemorrhage was observed in the right eye. On day 132, the retinal hemorrhage had further worsened, with new preretinal hemorrhage in both eyes. Roxadustat was discontinued, replaced with darbepoetin alfa, resulting in retinal hemorrhage improvement by day 181 (49 days post-roxadustat cessation). On day 201, fundus hemorrhage further improved, optical coherence tomography showed no macular edema or subretinal fluid, and the retina was thinning. Fluorescein angiography showed neovascular vessels, active fluorescein leakage, and extensive avascular areas in both eyes, prompting pan-retinal photocoagulation. Visual acuity remained stable throughout treatment. Conclusion: Patients with advanced diabetic retinopathy taking HIF-PH inhibitors should be aware of retinal hemorrhage exacerbations. If observed, the treatment plan, including discontinuation of the HIF-PH inhibitor or switching to another agent, should be discussed with a diabetologist, nephrologist, and ophthalmologist. Many of the medicinal plants have caffeine in their composition and according to some researchers they help to increase gastric acidity, being favorable in cases of hypochlorhydria and achlorhydria. The stomach parietal cells secrete hydrochloric acid (HCl), and achlorhydria and hypochlorhydria are conditions related to the amount of HCl secreted, the HCl reduction can lead the individual to a deficiency of vitamin B12, reduced absorption of calcium, iron and magnesium, which can cause osteoporosis and pernicious anemia, since the lack of vitamin B12 interferes with erythropoiesis. The methodology used was a literature review, and aimed to research medicinal plants that have caffeine in their composition and their respective levels, as well as to verify if caffeine can act in the increase of hydrochloric acid in the stomach of individuals with achlorhydria or hypochlorhydria. Articles from the following databases were selected: SciELO, PubMed and Google Scholar. Among the medicinal plants surveyed, Paullinia cupana was the one with the highest caffeine content, reaching up to 8% in its seeds. This article develops a theory to account for the variation in electoral systems in electoral authoritarian regimes. We argue that resource-rich dictators are incentivized to employ proportional representation systems to alleviate the threat from the masses and pre-empt the emergence of new opposition, while resource-poor dictators tend to choose majoritarian systems to co-opt ruling elites in the legislature. Using cross-national data on electoral authoritarian regimes, we find strong empirical evidence supporting our theory. We also explicitly illustrate the causal links between natural resources and electoral systems with additional statistical analyses and comparative case studies on Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Administration of intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy is the first-line therapy for diabetic macular oedema (DME). However, some patients show no or insufficient response to repeated anti-VEGF injections. Therefore, it is necessary to identify factors that can predict this resistance against anti-VEGF treatment. Presence of microaneurysms (MAs) is a predictor of the development and progression of DME, but its relationship with the treatment response to the anti-VEGF agents is not well known. Therefore, we aimed to elucidate the relationship between the distribution of MAs and the response to anti-VEGF therapy in patients with DME. The number of MAs was measured before anti-VEGF therapy in each region using fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green angiography (IA), and optical coherence tomography angiography. Patients with DME were divided into the responder and non-responder groups after three loading phases. Differences in the distribution of MAs between the groups were investigated. Pre-treatment IA revealed more MAs in the nasal area in the non-responder group than in the responder group (10.7 ± 10.7 and 5.7 ± 5.7, respectively, in the nasal macula) (1.4 ± 2.1 and 0.4 ± 0.7, respectively, in the nasal fovea). Whereas, pre-treatment FA and OCTA could not reveal significantly difference between the groups. Detection of MAs in the nasal macula using pre-treatment IA may indicate resistance to anti-VEGF therapy. We recommend the clinicians confirm the presence of MAs in the nasal macula, as shown by IA, as a predictor of therapeutic response to anti-VEGF therapy in patients with treatment naive DME. Acute and chronic inflammation is a basic pathological event that contributes to atherosclerosis, cancer, infectious diseases, and immune disorders. Inflammation is an adaptive process to both external and internal stimuli experienced by the human body. Although the mechanism of gene transcription is highly complicated and orchestrated in a timely and spatial manner, recent developments in next‐generation sequencing, genome‐editing, cryo‐electron microscopy, and single cell‐based technologies could provide us with insights into the roles of super enhancers (SEs). Initially, SEs were implicated in determining cell fate; subsequent studies have clarified that SEs are associated with various pathological conditions, including cancer and inflammatory diseases. Recent technological advances have unveiled the molecular mechanisms of SEs, which involve epigenetic histone modifications, chromatin three‐dimensional structures, and phase‐separated condensates. Why are some electoral authoritarian regimes immune to democratization for decades while others not? This article explores the impact of executive selection systems on democratic transitions from electoral authoritarianism. We argue that under electoral authoritarian regimes, Parliament-based systems permit dictators to more effectively deter democratization compared to Presidential systems. This is because Parliament-based systems indirectly allow electoral manipulation to achieve a victory at the ballot box, such as through gerrymandering and malapportionment. Parliament-based systems also make it difficult for opposition parties to coordinate and incentivize autocrats and ruling elites to engage in power-sharing and thus institutionalize ruling parties. We test our hypothesis as well as the underlying mechanisms employing a dataset of 93 electoral authoritarian countries between 1946 and 2012. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) signaling plays a central role in vascular development and maintenance of vascular homeostasis. In endothelial cells (ECs), VEGF activates the gene expression of angiogenic transcription factors (TFs), followed by induction of downstream angiogenic responsive genes. Recent findings support that histone modification dynamics contribute to the transcriptional control of genes that are important for EC functions. Lysine demethylase 2B (KDM2B) demethylates histone H3K4me3 and H3K36me2/3 and mediates the monoubiquitination of histone H2AK119. KDM2B functions as a transcriptional repressor in somatic cell reprogramming and tumor development. However, the role of KDM2B in VEGF signaling remains to be elucidated. Here, we show that KDM2B knockdown enhances VEGF-induced angiogenesis in cultured human ECs via increased migration and proliferation. In contrast, ectopic expression of KDM2B inhibits angiogenesis. The function of KDM2B may depend on its catalytic Jumonji C domain. Genome-wide analysis further reveals that KDM2B selectively controls the transcription of VEGF-induced angiogenic TFs that are associated with increased H3K4me3/H3K36me3 and decreased H2AK119ub. These findings suggest an essential role of KDM2B in VEGF signaling in ECs. As dysregulation of VEGF signaling in ECs is involved in various diseases, including cancer, KDM2B may be a potential therapeutic target in VEGF-mediated vasculopathic diseases. ∙ KDM2B has inhibitory effects on VEGF-induced angiogenesis in endothelial cells. ∙The anti-angiogenic functions of KDM2B is mediated via JmjC domain. ∙KDM2B selectively controls transcription of VEGF-responsive angiogenic TFs. ∙Histone modifications linked to KDM2B are dynamically changed during VEGF-signaling. We reported a case of simultaneous vitrectomy and sclerokeratoplasty (SKP) performed for keratoglobus with extensive corneal rupture and intraocular hemorrhage caused by trauma. A 73-year-old woman was treated for keratoglobus and glaucoma. She was punched in both eyes, her right eye showed corneal rupture and the left eye showed prolapse of the ocular contents due to eyeball rupture. She immediately underwent corneal sutures in the right eye and resection of the prolapsed ocular contents in the left eye at a nearby ophthalmological clinic. Three days after the injury, the patient was referred to our clinic for vision recovery. The best corrected visual acuity of the right eye was measured by counting fingers. Her right eye presented severe corneal edema with a sutured corneal wound in the upper periphery, which was positive in the Seidel test. B-mode ultrasound revealed choroidal detachment and subchoroidal hemorrhage. Fourteen days after injury, simultaneous corneal suture and posterior sclerotomy were performed in the right eye, but corneal fragility and corneal opacity were prominent, and B-mode examination revealed prolonged vitreous hemorrhage and retinal detachment. Twenty-one days after injury, we performed simultaneous SKP and 25-G pars plana vitrectomy (PPV). In this procedure, we initially performed SKP followed by 25-G PPV without a keratoprosthesis or endoscope. The visibility of the fundus through the corneoscleral graft was good during vitrectomy. Three months after surgery, her corrected visual acuity improved to 10/1,000. Although there was mild corneal stromal edema and khodadoust line, there were no obvious fundus complications. Simultaneous SKP and PPV for keratoglobus with extensive corneal rupture and vitreous diseases may be a good option. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: We clarified the safety and efficacy of preoperative chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced rectal cancer using a multidrug regimen (S-1 + oxaliplatin + bevacizumab). Methods: This multicenter phase II trial involved 47 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer. All patients received S-1 orally (80 mg/m2/day on days 1–5, 8–12, 15–19, and 22–26) and infusions of oxaliplatin (50 mg/m2 on days 1, 8, 15, and 22) and bevacizumab (5 mg/kg on days 1 and 15). The total radiation dose was 40 Gy delivered in daily fractions of 2 Gy via the four-field technique. The primary endpoint was the pathological complete response rate. The secondary endpoints were safety (incidence of adverse events) and clinical response, relapse-free survival, overall survival, local recurrence, R0 resection, downstaging, and treatment completion rates. Results: All 47 patients received chemoradiotherapy, and 44 patients underwent curative resection. Two patients refused surgery and selected a watch-and-wait strategy. The pathological complete response rate was 18.2% in patients who underwent curative resection. The clinical response rate was 91.3% in 46 patients. Concerning hematotoxicity, there was one grade 4 adverse event (2.1%) and seven grade 3 events (14.9%). Diarrhea was the most frequent non-hematotoxic event, and the grade 3 event rate was 25.5%. Conclusions: Although preoperative chemoradiotherapy for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer using the S-1 + oxaliplatin + bevacizumab regimen did not achieve the expected pathological complete response rate, this regimen led to an improved clinical response rate. Over the last decade, the development and progress of next-generation sequencers incorporated with classical biochemical analyses have drastically produced novel insights into transcription factors, including Sry-like high-mobility group box (SOX) factors. In addition to their primary functions in binding to and activating specific downstream genes, transcription factors also participate in the dedifferentiation or direct reprogramming of somatic cells to undifferentiated cells or specific lineage cells. Since the discovery of SOX factors, members of the SOXF (SOX7, SOX17, and SOX18) family have been identified to play broad roles, especially with regard to cardiovascular development. More recently, SOXF factors have been recognized as crucial players in determining the cell fate and in the regulation of cancer cells. Here, we provide an overview of research on the mechanism by which SOXF factors regulate development and cancer, and discuss their potential as new targets for cancer drugs while offering insight into novel mechanistic transcriptional regulation during cell lineage commitment. Background: Despite the widespread recognition of the importance of mental health in young people, only a small proportion of young people with a mental disorder, including university students, receive mental health care. Objective: We developed a smartphone application (Mental App) for the university students and examined the effects of the app on their mental health. Methods: The app was designed according to a questionnaire survey conducted before this study. The Mental App was installed on the students' smartphone and the psychological tests (the Link Stigma Scale, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and the 12-item General Health Questionnaire) were performed on the same day. After using the App for two weeks, the students completed a questionnaire survey and underwent the same psychological tests. We compared the results between the app user and non-user group. Results: A total of 68 students participated, of which 57 students completed the study (app user group, n = 28; control group, n = 29). The mean number of days spent using the app was 5.66 ± 3.16 (mean ± SD). The mean total screen time of the app was 9:03 ± 06:41(min:sec). The mean number of total actions (screen taps or swipes) was 161.91 ± 107.34. There were no significant between-group differences in the ΔLink Stigma Scale score (-0.11 ± 4.28 vs. -0.59 ± 3.30, p = 0.496) or the ΔCenter for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale score (-4.39 ± 7.13 vs. -2.07 ± 8.78, p = 0.143). There was a significant between-group difference in the ΔGeneral Health Questionnaire score (-2.21± 2.23 vs. -0.17 ± 2.69, p = 0.007). Conclusions: This non-randomized controlled pilot study indicates that the app we developed, may provide effective mental health care for university students, even in the short-term. Histone H3 lysine‐9 di‐methylation (H3K9me2) and lysine‐27 tri‐methylation (H3K27me3) are linked to repression of gene expression, but the functions of repressive histone methylation dynamics during inflammatory responses remain enigmatic. Here, we report that lysine demethylases 7A (KDM7A) and 6A (UTX) play crucial roles in tumor necrosis factor (TNF)‐α signaling in endothelial cells (ECs), where they are regulated by a novel TNF‐α‐responsive microRNA, miR‐3679‐5p. TNF‐α rapidly induces co‐occupancy of KDM7A and UTX at nuclear factor kappa‐B (NF‐κB)‐associated elements in human ECs. KDM7A and UTX demethylate H3K9me2 and H3K27me3, respectively, and are both required for activation of NF‐κB‐dependent inflammatory genes. Chromosome conformation capture‐based methods furthermore uncover increased interactions between TNF‐α‐induced super enhancers at NF‐κB‐relevant loci, coinciding with KDM7A and UTX recruitments. Simultaneous pharmacological inhibition of KDM7A and UTX significantly reduces leukocyte adhesion in mice, establishing the biological and potential translational relevance of this mechanism. Collectively, these findings suggest that rapid erasure of repressive histone marks by KDM7A and UTX is essential for NF‐κB‐dependent regulation of genes that control inflammatory responses of ECs. Introduction: Urethral injury is one of the most important complications that can occur during transanal total mesorectal excision in male patients with rectal cancer. This report shows the usefulness of intraoperative X‐ray fluoroscopy to avoid urethral injury associated with transanal total mesorectal excision. Materials and Surgical Technique: Real‐time navigation using fluoroscopy was performed to check the distance between the urethra and the dissection line at the level of the exposed rectourethral muscle, the middle level of the divided rectourethral muscle, and the level at which the prostate was identified. Discussion: The dissection was completed transanally up to the level of peritoneal reflection on the anterior side without urethral injury. Pathological examination confirmed that the circumferential resection margin was tumor free. This novel technique using intraoperative X‐ray fluoroscopy is an easy‐to‐use approach that helps prevent urethral injury in male patient who undergo transanal total mesorectal excision for rectal cancer. We present a case of malignant change of an ovarian mature cystic teratoma. Our patient was a 48‐year‐old woman and she visited a primary care doctor presenting with abdominal pain. At her first visit, her pelvic tumor measured 70 × 50 mm by ultrasonography. She was diagnosed as rupture of the malignant tumor occurred secondary to mature cystic teratoma and she took the surgery (abdominal total hysterectomy, bilateral oophorectomy and partial omentectomy). Pathologic diagnosis was squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) occurred secondary to mature cystic teratoma. Treatment with paclitaxel/carboplatin (TC chemotherapy) and gemcitabine hydrochloride/carboplatin (GC chemotherapy) after operation was not effective, and the refractory ileus resulting from rapid progression of the disease continued. She was died of disease progression 7 months after the diagnosis of ovarian cancer. Background Objective Methods Results Conclusion Adenosinergic system has been implicated in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder and drugs that affect adenosine neurotransmission have shown some efficacy as add‐on therapy in manic patients.Thus, the aim of the present study was to screen adenosinergic drugs for antimanic‐like effect in methylphenidate (MPH)‐induced hyperlocomotion in mice.Male and female Swiss mice received a single allopurinol (50 and 200 mg/kg, ip), dipyridamole (20 mg/kg, ip), or inosine (50 mg/kg, ip) administration before an acute MPH challenge (5 mg/kg, sc). In experiments with repeated treatment, male mice received a daily administration of allopurinol (25 and 50 mg/kg, ip), dipyridamole (20 mg/kg, ip), or inosine (50 mg/kg, ip) for 14 days. Finally, pretreatment with aminophylline (2 mg/kg, sc), an unspecific adenosine receptor antagonist, was used to evaluate a putative adenosinergic mediation. Locomotor activity was measured in the automated activity chamber for 20 min.Acute and repeated dipyridamole reduced the increase in locomotor activity induced by MPH, while allopurinol and inosine had no effect. Aminophylline blocked the effect of dipyridamole in MPH‐induced hyperlocomotion.The present results suggest that dipyridamole may have an antimanic‐like effect through adenosine receptors and reinforce the proposal that the adenosine system may be an interesting target for new antimanic drugs. Ethnic inequality has been argued to have numerous pernicious effects. Among other things, scholars have argued that it breeds political violence, destabilizes democracy, and impedes economic development. While the arguments developed by these literatures implicitly assume that ethnic inequality increases the degree to which individuals identify with their ethnicity, this assumption has yet to be tested empirically at the individual-level. This paper argues and empirically demonstrates that between-ethnic group inequality does strengthen ethnic identities. However, we also find that the magnitude of its effect weakens as inequality within ethnic groups increases. That is, individuals identify most strongly with their ethnic identity when ethnicity is reinforced by economic inequality. Using the Afrobarometer, we provide the first cross-national empirical test of the effect of ethnic inequality on the strength of ethnic identities at the individual-level. Independent central banks prefer balanced budgets due to the long-run connection between deficits and inflation, and can enforce their preference through interest rate increases and denial of credit to the government. This article argues that legal central bank independence (CBI) deters fiscal deficits predominantly in countries with rule of law and impartial contract enforcement, a free press and constraints on executive power. It further suggests that CBI may not affect fiscal deficits in a counter-cyclical fashion, but instead depending on the electoral calendar and government partisanship. The article also tests the novel hypotheses using new yearly data on legal CBI for seventy-eight countries from 1970 to 2007. The aim of this study was to clarify the association between circulating pregnancy-associated, placenta-specific microRNAs (miRNAs) in maternal plasma and placental abruption. All samples were obtained after receiving written informed consent, and the study protocol was approved by the institutional review board. Maternal blood samples (7 mL) were obtained at 25 to 40 weeks of gestation from 15 cases of placental abruption (placental abruption group) and from 24 cases of uncomplicated pregnancies (uncomplicated pregnancy group). The plasma concentrations of pregnancy-associated, placenta-specific miRNAs (miR-515-3p, -517a, -517c, and -518b) were measured by quantitative real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. There were no significant differences in clinical characteristics between the 2 groups. The median concentration of plasma cell-free miR-517c in the placental abruption group was 21 672.2 copies/mL, whereas that in the uncomplicated pregnancy group was 13 452.0 copies/mL (Mann-Whitney U test, P = .047). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed that plasma cell-free miR-517c levels discriminated placental abruption from uncomplicated pregnancy with an area under the curve of 0.692. When a cutoff negative/positive value of 15 669.6 copies/mL was selected, the sensitivity and specificity were 73.3% and 62.5%, respectively. In addition, the positive and negative predictive values were 55.0% and 78.9%, respectively. Plasma cell-free miR-517a and miR-517c levels in the large abruption (degree of abruption ≥50% of placenta) group were significantly higher than in the small abruption (<50%) group (P = .03 for both miRNAs). Purpose: Sevoflurane is known to prolong the QT interval. This study aimed to determine the effect of the interaction between intravenous anesthetics and sevoflurane on the QT interval. Methods: The study included 48 patients who underwent lumbar spine surgery. Patients received 3 μg/kg fentanyl and were then randomly allocated to either Group T, in which they received 5 mg/kg thiamylal, or Group P, in which they received 1.5 mg/kg propofol, at 2 min after administration of fentanyl injection for anesthetic induction. Vecuronium (1.5 mg/kg) and sevoflurane (3 % inhaled concentration) were administered immediately after loss of consciousness and tracheal intubation was performed 3 min after vecuronium injection. Heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), bispectral index score (BIS), and the heart rate-corrected QT (QTc) interval on a 12-lead electrocardiogram were recorded immediately before fentanyl administration (T1), 2 min after fentanyl injection (T2), immediately before intubation (T3), and 2 min after intubation (T4). Results: There were no significant differences between the two groups in baseline patient characteristics. BIS and MAP significantly decreased after anesthesia induction in both groups. At T3, MAP in Group T was higher than in Group P, while HR had reduced in both groups. The QTc interval was prolonged after anesthesia induction in Group T, but did not change at any time point in Group P. The QTc interval after anesthesia induction in Group T was longer than in Group P. This paper explores the conditions under which democratic elections encourage citizens to identify with ethnicity. We argue that there are two mechanisms through which elections strengthen ethnic identification. First, the stronger ethnic parties are, the more intensive, ethnically exclusive political campaigns they carry out as an election approaches, resulting in strengthening citizens' ethnic identity. Second, ethnic party mobilization drives members of other ethnic groups to develop stronger identity to their own ethnicity because such mobilization poses a serious political threat to the out-group members. Data analysis of approximately 18,000 respondents in five waves of the New Baltic Barometer supports the hypotheses. Summary This paper explores the conditions under which public spending could minimize violent conflict related to oil wealth. Previous work on the resource curse suggests that oil can lead to violent conflict because it increases the value of the state as a prize or because it undermines the state’s bureaucratic penetration. On the other hand, the rentier state literature has long argued that oil might provide states with resources to deliver public and private goods, and stabilize political regimes. The empirical evidence to settle these conflicting predictions is limited. This paper argues that the effect of oil on civil conflict is conditional on the size of government expenditure and the allocation of government spending for welfare or the military. To test these hypotheses, logit models of conflict onset are used and a global sample of 148 countries from 1960 to 2009 is examined. Higher levels of military spending are found to be associated with lower risks of both minor and major conflict onset in countries rich in oil and gas. By contrast, in countries with little oil or gas resources, increases in military spending are associated with a higher risk of conflict. Welfare expenditure is associated with a lower risk of small-scale conflict, irrespective of the level of oil revenue. However, general government spending does not appear to have any robust mitigating effects. Consistent with the focus in the more recent literature to disentangle the average effect of natural resources, these results nuance the conditions under which there may be a resource curse. This paper introduces a disturbance-compensating and energy-saving control method of an air turbine spindle equipped with a rotation control system designed for use in ultra-precision milling. As one of the key components, our proposed pneumatic regulating device, called a high-precision quick-response pneumatic pressure regulator (HPQR), is used to control the air supply pressure of the air turbine spindle precisely and quickly. The rotation feedback control system including the HPQR and a disturbance force observer, which avoids changes of rotation speed due to disturbance forces applied to the air turbine spindle, is explained. In addition, a pneumatic energy assessment method using a device called an “air power meter” is explained. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through the experimental results. Aim To clarify the association between circulating chromosome 19 miRNA cluster (C19MC) microRNAs in maternal plasma and severe pre-eclampsia. Method Maternal blood samples (7 mL) at 27-34 weeks of gestation were obtained from 20 pregnant women with severe pre-eclampsia (sPE group) and from 20 uncomplicated pregnant women (NP group). Twenty cases of severe pre-eclampsia were classified into late onset (sPELO group; n = 14) and early onset (sPEEO group; n = 6). Plasma concentration of C19MC microRNAs (miR-518b, -1323, -516b, -516a-5p, -525-5p, -515-5p, -520 h, -520a-5p, -519d and -526b) was measured on quantitative real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Results The circulating levels of all 10 C19MC microRNAs in maternal plasma were significantly increased in the sPE group compared with the NP group. Plasma concentration of all 10 C19MC microRNAs tested was significantly increased in the sPEEO group compared with the NP group, while plasma concentration of nine miRNAs, except for miR-519d, was significantly increased in the sPELO group compared with the NP group. Of the 10 C19MC microRNAs measured, plasma concentration of eight miRNAs, except for miR-518b and miR-519d, was significantly increased in the sPEEO group compared with the sPELO group. Conclusions Increased levels of C19MC microRNAs in maternal plasma are a characteristic phenomenon of established severe pre-eclampsia, and it has been shown for the first time that the upregulation of C19MC miRNAs occurred as a consequence of, not in advance of, the onset of pre-eclampsia. Dipeptidyl peptidase (DPP)-4 is an enzyme that cleaves and inactivates incretin hormones capable of stimulating insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells. DPP-4 inhibitors are now widely used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Experimental studies have suggested a renoprotective role of DPP-4 inhibitors in various models of diabetic kidney disease, which may be independent of lowering blood glucose levels. In the present study, we examined the effect of DPP-4 inhibitors in the rat Thy-1 glomerulonephritis model, a nondiabetic glomerular injury model. Rats were injected with OX-7 (1.2 mg/kg iv) and treated with the DPP-4 inhibitor alogliptin (20 mg·kg-1·day-1) or vehicle for 7 days orally by gavage. Alogliptin significantly reduced the number of CD68-positive inflammatory macrophages in the kidney, which was associated with a nonsignificant tendency to ameliorate glomerular injury and reduce proteinuria. Another DPP-4 inhibitor, anagliptin (300 mg·kg-1·day-1 mixed with food) and a glucagon- like peptide-1 receptor agonist, exendin-4 (10 mg/kg sc), similarly reduced CD68-positive macrophage infiltration to the kidney. Furthermore, ex vivo transmigration assays using peritoneal macrophages revealed that exendin-4, but not alogliptin, dose dependently reduced monocyte chemotactic protein-1-stimulated macrophage infiltration. These data suggest that DPP-4 inhibitors reduced macrophage infiltration directly via glucagon-like peptide-1-dependent signaling in the rat Thy-1 nephritis model and indicate that the control of inflammation by DPP-4 inhibitors is useful for the treatment of nondiabetic kidney disease models. Incretin-based drugs, i.e., glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors, are widely used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. In addition to the primary role of incretins in stimulating insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells, they have extra pancreatic functions beyond glycemic control. Indeed, recent studies highlight the potential beneficial effects of incretin-based therapy in diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Experimental studies using various diabetic models suggest that incretins protect the vascular endothelium from injury by binding to GLP-1 receptors, thereby ameliorating oxidative stress and the local inflammatory response, which reduces albuminuria and inhibits glomerular sclerosis. In addition, there is some evidence that GLP-1 receptor agonists and DPP-4 inhibitors mediate sodium excretion and diuresis to lower blood pressure. The pleiotropic actions of DPP-4 inhibitors are ascribed primarily to their effects on GLP-1 signaling, but other substrates of DPP-4, such as brain natriuretic peptide and stromal-derived factor-1α, may have roles. Textural properties play an important role in the appreciation and acceptance of fresh tomatoes by consumers. This study aimed to clarify whether the effect of salt stress (50 and 100 mM NaCl) on texture profiles depends on the cultivars and/or tissue types of cherry tomatoes and visually identify the interactions of texture with organoleptic and consumer sensory properties using correlation network analysis. The effect of salt stress on texture profiles differed according to the cherry tomato cultivar, stress intensity, truss, and tissue (outer pericarp, locule, septa). The cohesiveness, gumminess, and chewiness of the outer pericarp and the cohesiveness of the locule were higher in salt-stressed fruit than in control fruit, but the effect was cultivar-dependent. Sensory properties such as overall taste, sweetness, and skin hardness and several organoleptic properties were 1.2–1.7-fold higher in salt-stressed fruit than in control fruit. Although no textural properties interacted with sensory properties in the control fruit network in correlation network analysis, the connectivity of textural properties such as cohesiveness with other traits in salt-stressed fruit increased with increasing salt stress intensity. In the network combining all treatments, the most connected node was cohesiveness, and cohesiveness was the key factor that enhanced the sensory and organoleptic properties of salt-stressed tomatoes, although the effects were cultivar- and tissue-specific. Background: For advanced gastric cancer (AGC), peritoneal metastasis is the most common determinant of unresectability, but accurate preoperative diagnosis for peritoneal metastasis is challenging. Staging laparoscopy (SL) can detect unsuspected peritoneal metastasis. This study retrospectively evaluated the utility of SL and its indication in patients with AGC. Methods: In this study, we enrolled 114 patients with pathologically diagnosed gastric adenocarcinoma who underwent SL. Results: Of the 114 patients, 43 (37.7%) had peritoneal metastasis (P1 or CY1). Higher age, larger tumor size, type 4 GC, deeper tumor depth, elevated CA125, and ascites findings in preoperative CT were found to be significant predictors of peritoneal metastasis. In multivariate analysis, peritoneal metastasis was associated with type 4 GC (odds ratio [OR]: 6.11; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.87-19.8; P <.01) and ascites in CT (OR: 4.25; 95% CI: 1.48-12.1; P <.01). Conclusions: Staging laparoscopy is an effective tool to detect peritoneal metastasis from AGC. It can increase the curative resection rate and decrease unnecessary laparotomies. The CH photon emission rate, defined as the number of photons over a dissociation and/or ionization event of CH4, has been determined from the ratio of the measured emission intensity of the CH spectral band over the CH4 injection rate into the divertor plasma of JT-60U. Similar photon emission rates of CD for CD4, and CH and C2 for C2H4 and C2H6, have also been determined. Interestingly, the C2 spectral band intensity is found to increase during the CH4 and CD4 injection, suggesting that the injected CH4 reacts with the carbon divertor plates to form heavier hydrocarbons. Previously published chemical sputtering yields (Nakano et al 2002 Nucl. Fusion42 689) evaluated with the photon efficiencies determined in PISCES-A (Pospieszczyk et al 1989 UCLA Report UCLA-PPG-1251) have been re-evaluated using the measured emission rates. By applying the photon emission data found here and taking into account the C2 emission process originating from CH4, the re-evaluated total chemical sputtering yield becomes lower (∼7%) compared to the original in (Nakano et al 2002 Nucl. Urinary exosomes are small vesicles secreted into urine from all renal epithelial cell types and known to contain proteins that are involved in renal secretion and reabsorption. Among these proteins, urinary exosomal aquaporin-2 (AQP2) has been suggested to be useful for diagnosis of renal disease. However, the mechanisms underlying the excretion of urinary exosomal AQP2 are largely unknown. In this study, we examined the mechanisms of urinary exosomal AQP2 excretion in vivo, using diuretics including furosemide (FS), an inhibitor of the sodiumpotassium- chloride symporter; acetazolamide (ACTZ), an inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase; OPC-31260 (OPC), a vasopressin type 2 receptor antagonist; and NaHCO3, a urinary alkalizing agent. Samples of urine from rats were collected for 2 h just after treatment with each diuretic, and urinary exosomes were isolated by ultracentrifugation. Urinary exosomal AQP2 excretion was dramatically increased by treatment with FS accompanied by urine acidification or with ACTZ accompanied by urine alkalization. Immunohistochemistry showed that apical localization of AQP2 was clearly evident and the plasma vasopressin level was increased after each treatment. Although treatment with OPC alone had no significant effect, coadministration of OPC completely inhibited the FS-induced and partially reduced the ACTZinduced responses, respectively. Treatment with NaHCO3 increased the excretion of urinary exosomal AQP2 accompanied by urine alkalization. This increased response was partially inhibited by coadministration of OPC. These data suggest that an increased plasma level of vasopressin promoted the excretion of urinary exosomal AQP2 and that urine alkalinization also increased it independently of vasopressin. It has been long debated among comparativists whether democratic states advance human development. By regressing infant mortality rates on a cumulative score of democracy, recent studies have suggested that a long tradition of democracy is of greater importance than the present degree of democracy to explain human development. This approach, however, faces several issues and also fails to pinpoint the effect of a democratic reform at a certain point in time on future human welfare. We argue that political liberalization encourages policymakers to adopt poverty-alleviating policies, but such a policy change is more likely to bear substantive fruit over the relatively long run. Using newly collected panel data on infant mortality rates from 1800 to 2015 from 172 countries, we test our theoretical expectations. Applying error correction models to this extensive time-series cross-sectional data, we find that political liberalization is more likely to increase equal access to public services immediately but that infant mortality rates are reduced in the long run. These results suggest that democratic reforms do have a positive effect on human welfare, but the effect might appear with a passage of time as well as shrinks over time. Our research implies that policymakers may need to make tireless investments in the advancement of political liberalization to continue improving human well-being in the developing world. With the aim of developing a new easy-to-use method for rescuing flood-damaged paper, the effect of saltwater on the inhibition of fungal growth on paper was investigated. This procedure could be used instead of, or assisted by freeze drying. Cellulose-digesting Trichoderma reesei, three types of fungi representative of fungi growing on paper (T. reesei, Aspergillus terreus, and Aureobasidium pullulans) and various naturally airborne fungi were cultured on cellulosic materials in liquid media containing artificial seawater with different salt concentrations. The addition of salts successfully inhibited the growth of T reesei on microcrystalline cellulose at the concentration of 3.2% (m/m) or higher. The critical salt concentration, 3.2%, is within the general range of salt content in seawater. Other solutions of salts similar to sodium chloride also inhibited fungal growth. Although the observed growth-inhibiting effect was attributed to the high osmotic pressure of the salt solution, physiological effects depending on ion species used were also considered to be possible. The growth of all three types of fungi on copy paper was inhibited effectively when the salt concentration was increased. The growth of various fungi on pure cellulose, with enough oxygen supplied to pores, was completely inhibited (as assessed by visual examination) for 24 days at salt concentrations of 3.5% (m/m) or greater. The fact that the effect of saltwater on cellulosic materials was observed even under optimum medium conditions implies that fungi would be considerably inhibited on flood-damaged paper immersed in saltwater. Abstract: The JT-60SA divertor has to withstand a maximum heat flux of ∼15MW/m2 for 100s, and JAEA has developed the monoblock-type CFC divertor target for JT-60SA. To boost production yield of the targets, CFC cracking due to thermal expansion and contraction of the CuCrZr cooling tubes must be suppressed. CuCrZr properties depend strongly on the heat treatment, and the target is heat-treated during the manufacturing processes of brazing, solution treatment, and annealing. CuCrZr test specimens were heat-treated with the targets, and the strength and hardness of the specimens were almost the same for the quenching cooling rates of ∼0.65°C/s and ∼1.5°C/s around 800°C. This indicates that the slower quenching cooling rate is acceptable, and consequently at least half of the mock-ups could remove the required high heat flux of 15MW/m2. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

As the first step in prenatal diagnosis of X-linked genetic disorders, chorionic villus sampling (CVS) for fetal sex determination is generally performed at 11-13 weeks of gestation. However, as the procedure-related miscarriage rate of CVS is 0.5-1.0%, non-invasive methods such as PCR of cell-free fetal DNA (cff-DNA) in maternal plasma are preferable. Here, we determined fetal sex at 9-12 weeks of gestation using PCR of cff-DNA in three pregnant carriers of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The fetal sex was accurately determined in all three cases, as confirmed by ultrasound and amniocentesis at 16 weeks (for the two female fetuses) and CVS at 12 weeks (for the one male fetus). Abstract: Construction has just begun in the JT-60 Super Advanced (JT-60SA) tokamak project, which is part of the Japanese domestic program and the Japan – EU international program “ITER Broader Approach”. All plasma facing components (PFCs) will be actively cooled because they are exposed to high heat flux for long duration. A lower single-null closed divertor with a vertical target (VT) will be installed when experiments begin. A divertor cassette integrated with coolant pipe connections will be used for remote handling maintenance. Each cassette covers a 10° sector in the toroidal direction. Modularized PFCs such as VTs, baffles, and domes will be assembled on divertor cassettes. Static structural analysis shows that the displacement and stress in the divertor module are generally small for determining the dead weight, coolant pressure, and electromagnetic forces (EMFs). The aim of this study was to determine the effect of thiamylal and propofol on heart rate-corrected QT (QTc) interval during anaesthetic induction. We studied 50 patients undergoing lumbar spine surgery. Patients were administered 3 μg.kg−1 fentanyl and were randomly allocated to receive 5 mg.kg−1 thiamylal or 1.5 mg.kg−1 propofol as an induction agent. Tracheal intubation was performed after vecuronium administration. Heart rate, mean arterial pressure, bispectral index score, and 12-lead electrocardiogram were recorded at the following time points: just before (T1) and 2 min after (T2) fentanyl administration; 2 min after anaesthetic administration (T3); 2.5 min after vecuronium injection (T4); and 2 min after intubation (T5). The zebrafish heart provides a useful vertebrate cardiovascular model with outstanding advantages, including genetic manipulatability, optical accessibility and rapid development. In addition, an emerging topic in cardiotoxicity assay and drug discovery is its use in phenotype-based chemical screening. Here, we report a technique that allows non-invasive voltage mapping in beating heart using a genetically encoded probe for transmembrane potential. Application of the anti-allergy compound astemizole resulted in aberrant propagation of excitation, which accounted for a lack of ventricular contraction. Abstract: Laser welded V–4Cr–4Ti–0.15Y alloy, fabricated by National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS), was used in this study. Copper ion irradiation was carried out with the tandem accelerator at Kyushu University. The TEM samples were sliced from the welded materials and irradiated at 873K up to the dose of 12dpa. The microstructure before the irradiation showed that relatively large precipitates, which were commonly observed in the alloy, disappeared in the center of the weld metal. After the ion irradiation, fine titanium oxides with {100} habit planes were detected. However, in all irradiation doses, the growth of titanium oxides was suppressed by Y addition.
