Background Mucins are implicated in survival in various cancers, but there have been no report addressed on survival in appendiceal carcinoma, an uncommon disease with different clinical and pathological features from those of other colon cancers. We aimed to investigate the clinical implications of expression of mucins in appendiceal carcinoma. Methods Expression profiles of MUC1, MUC2, MUC3, MUC4, MUC5AC, MUC6, MUC16 and MUC17 in cancer tissue were examined by immunohistochemistry in 108 cases of surgically resected appendiceal carcinoma. A 71-year-old man was admitted with the diagnosis of Klatskin's tumor. Pre-operatively, in order to induce compensatory hypertrophy of the remnant liver, the right portal venous branch was obstructed with Gelfoam cubes by the percutaneous transhepatic portographic technique under ultrasonic guidance. Sixteen days after embolization of the right portal vein, hepatectomy was carried out. At laparatomy, the surface of the liver was irregular and nodulated like a turtle shell, and the left lobe appeared hypertropic. Extended right lobectomy and an intrahepatic bile duct enteric anastomosis were performed. The postoperative course was unevetful. Histopathological findings were papillotubular carcinoma of the bile duct and numerous ova of schistosoma japonicum in the portal vein associated with liver cirrhosis. This is the first report of successful resection of Klatskin's tumor combined with cirrhosis due to schistosomiasis japonica as far as we know.
