Integrating the theory of workplace deviance with person–environment fit theory, we propose a two‐pathway model to explain why and how employees who feel overqualified engage in time theft behavior. Specifically, we anticipate that feeling overqualified will negatively influence focal employees' experienced authority fairness and erode their work meaningfulness, which in turn will lead to increased time theft behavior. Further, we argue that voice endorsement serves as a key boundary condition mitigating the negative effects of perceived overqualification. We conducted two multi‐waved and multi‐sourced field studies to test our proposed hypotheses. Study 1 (247 employees and 47 supervisors) revealed that perceived overqualification is associated with time theft behavior through the mediators of experienced authority fairness and meaningfulness. The authors posit that in an initial exposure to a broadcast video, hearing different voices narrate (in succession) a persuasive message encourages consumers' attention and processing of the message, thereby facilitating persuasion; this is referred to as the voice numerosity effect. Across four studies (plus validation and replication studies)—including two large-scale, real-world data sets (with more than 11,000 crowdfunding videos and over 3.6 million customer transactions, and more than 1,600 video ads) and two controlled experiments (with over 1,800 participants)—the results provide support for the hypothesized effect. The effect (1) has consequential, economic implications in a real-world marketplace, (2) is more pronounced when the message is easier to comprehend, (3) is more pronounced when consumers have the capacity to process the ad message, and (4) is mediated by the favorability of consumers' cognitive responses. Differential object marking (DOM) is known from a great variety of language families. We present data suggesting that, contrary to what is suggested in recent typological surveys, DOM is also a widespread phenomenon in Austronesian symmetrical voice languages. To do this, we show why the identification of DOM constructions in these languages is difficult, propose a definition for DOM that takes note of the peculiarities of symmetrical voice systems, and briefly review three types of DOM systems attested in the area. Research on deep learning-powered voice conversion (VC) in speech-to-speech scenarios are gaining increasing popularity. Although many of the works in the field of voice conversion share a common global pipeline, there is considerable diversity in the underlying structures, methods, and neural sub-blocks used across research efforts. Thus, obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the reasons behind the choice of the different methods included when training voice conversion models can be challenging, and the actual hurdles in the proposed solutions are often unclear. To shed light on these aspects, this paper presents a scoping review that explores the use of deep learning in speech analysis, synthesis, and disentangled speech representation learning within modern voice conversion systems. We screened 628 publications from more than 38 venues between 2017 and 2023, followed by an in-depth review of a final database of 130 eligible studies. Based on the review, we summarise themost frequently used approaches to voice conversion based on deep learning and highlight common pitfalls. We condense the knowledge gathered to identify main challenges, supply solutions grounded in the analysis and provide recommendations for future research directions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Partant de l'intuition clinique selon laquelle les professionnels experts du travail transculturel pourraient être particulièrement attentifs à la voix humaine – étant donné que cette pratique entre les cultures implique souvent une barrière de langue surmontée grâce aux interprètes et invite à s'intéresser à la musicalité des voix et des langues – les chercheurs ont mené une enquête qualitative pour émettre des hypothèses sur le rôle joué par la voix humaine dans le soin psychique. The human voice is an often underestimated tool in clinical practice and psychosocial studies and research. Paradoxically, despite being a primary means of expressing emotions and sharing intimate feelings, the human voice is often neglected in clinical psychotherapeutic work. Despite its importance for psychotherapists, psychiatrists, and caregivers, a lack of theories and deeper explorations of its potential impedes its explicit utilization in the mental health care environment. This article focuses on the importance of the caregiver's voice when working with patients from different cultures and languages, particularly in transcultural clinics, such as transcultural consultations, which emphasize the therapeutic characteristics of the voice that clinicians often overlook. The authors examined the clinical intuition of experienced caregivers, including nurses, psychologists, and psychiatrists, who work with patients from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The prosody and musical elements of the spoken voice play a particularly important role in these clinical settings that transcend language barriers. Through a qualitative inductive study involving six experienced clinicians, the authors developed themes highlighting the importance of the caregiver's voice. These themes were based on the experiences and clinical anecdotes of participants specializing in transcultural therapeutic approaches, accustomed to collaborating with interpreters who bridge the language divergence between French and the patients' native languages. The transcultural consultation constitutes a unique therapeutic approach comprising a team of co-therapists with diverse cultural backgrounds and languages, along with patients, their family members, and professionals providing administrative, medical, or psychological help. The principal therapist is responsible for setting the stage for the consultation and may invite co-therapists to share mental images or proposals while listening to the patient. In this group setting, attentiveness to the voice is crucial, as it provides the therapist with direct audible cues from the patient, and it is also what the patient receives from the caregivers. Before language is translated by an interpreter, the patient perceives the sound of the therapist's voice, its musicality, prosody, and conveyed emotions. The results of this qualitative study suggest that the therapist's voice in a transcultural clinical setting is essential in creating a positive work environment, conveying good intentions to patients, and establishing a therapeutic alliance through prosodic elements. Furthermore, the voice plays an important implicit and explicit role for the participants in this study. They note that their voice unconsciously varies, and they can use it explicitly as a therapeutic tool to create an impulse or mood. Important aspects of the patient-caregiver relationship can be exclusively transmitted by the tone of the voice and by the musicality of the linguistic content of statements made by the caregiver, who wields an important clinical tool that is often taken for granted. The study also highlighted the important contrast between the explicit role of the caregiver's voice as a conscious therapeutic tool and the implicit, unconscious influence on the caregiver's voice linked to the relationship with patients. Further interdisciplinary studies of the human voice as a tool in a clinical and psychotherapeutic context are therefore essential, and the transcultural approach could inspire future research. The current methods for speaker diarization commonly employ standard global clustering techniques to distinguish speech segments of different speakers, without considering that voice of the same individual may exhibit various feature distribution under varying background noise conditions, which enlarges the intra-class distances and impacts clustering heavily. Motivated by that adjacent speech segments often share the same background noise, this paper proposed a novel temporalsegment-and-regroup clustering (TSARC) pipeline for speaker diarization to address above issues. Firstly, TSARC partitioned all speech segments into multiple independent intervals along their temporal continuity and conducted local clustering within each interval. Afterwards, it re-associated segments attributed to the same speaker across different intervals. Moreover, during the clustering process, the method actively employed neighborhood information from speech segments to calibrate their similarities. Through this way, TSARC reduced the likelihood of direct clustering under disparate noise conditions, effectively improving the accuracy of clustering. Experimental results on the public datasets AMI SDM and VoxConverse show that, compared with the baseline method, the proposed method has achieved relatively reductions in diarization error rate (DER) by 34% and 16% respectively, which proves the effectiveness of the proposed method. This article explores body–voice entanglements in TikTok through the prism of ventriloquism. It suggests that TikTok is an app of network ventriloquism, that is, an audiovisual technology–based web of dissociations and reconfigurations of users' bodies and voices. Yiddish serves as a case study for how TikTok's features build an infrastructure for language, heritage, and cultural activism. We analyze YiddishToks as an instantiation of the ways TikTokers embody actual technolinguistic and ventriloquistic interconnections as well as bond with past generations. YiddishTokers interlace times and spaces and recontextualize Yiddish media history. TikTok's algorithm participates in this reanimation of Yiddish's past; it is a transparent, audible director that prompts the network off-stage. In April 2024, workers at Volkswagen’s huge plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, voted overwhelmingly to join the United Auto Workers. The victory was highly-significant; the union had organized the first foreign-owned automaker in the South after decades of trying. A breakthrough in a sector responsible for half of North American auto production, this “seismic victory” was widely-reported. This article probes the reasons for the union’s victory, advancing the concept of “long haul unionism” to understand it. While media accounts stressed short-term factors – including the UAW’s recent revival and a wider post-pandemic labor upsurge – I argue that it also occurred because of the union’s long haul strategy. The UAW had been trying to organize the plant since 2010, losing elections in 2014 and 2019. Undeterred, it stayed on the ground, gradually overcoming its “outsider” label. It also focused effectively on workers’ demands for a stronger voice in the plant. The victory illustrated how southern organizing often required sustained effort over many years, something highlighted by previous union fights, including Operation Dixie in the 1940s and the J.P. Stevens campaign of the 1970s. As such, the win needs to be understood in the context of history – not just contemporary conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rhythm is essential in early music education. To acquire rhythm abilities, the synchronisation between body and rhythm patterns is fundamental. Extensive research has shown the link between the auditory-motor system and rhythm acquisition; however, other sensorimotor systems also improve rhythm skills. Rhythm acquisition can be trained using new technologies, such as video games; however, most of these use mainly auditory stimuli to improve it. Therefore, in this work, we explore tactile stimuli to improve rhythm skills using a video game and how visual elements affect rhythm perception using different stimuli. We evaluate and compare the synchronisation of 27 participants following either vibrotactile or auditory stimuli emitted through a rhythm video game in two difficulty levels and we evaluated the user experience. Consistent with the literature, our results indicate that participants synchronised slightly better using auditory than vibrotactile stimuli and players' performance was better when they had visual guides. A fatigue effect persisted and increased over playtime in both conditions. In the current study, usability measures indicate no significant differences. These findings suggest that vibrotactile stimuli are also suitable to train rhythm skills in a video game environment and the game-elements play an important role in players' performance. Poetic inquiry is used to highlight contrasting lived experiences of vulnerability and worsening socio‐ecological outcomes among Australia's fastest growing coastal communities. Our approach interweaves multiple participant voices across local and national scales to juxtapose the contrasts of inequality, enmesh social and ecological experiences, and ask reflexive questions of audiences. We offer an evocative portrayal of inequality to the growing body of work demonstrating that unequal and intensifying vulnerabilities are created and sustained through complicated, non‐adaptive and hierarchical social systems. We demonstrate that poetic inquiry can interrogate complex system phenomena and broad concepts, such as the Anthropocene, to distil critical and systemic issues while retaining undeniable connections with the deeply personal implications of socio‐ecological change. Hence, poetic inquiry can serve analytical and descriptive purposes towards an emotional and political aesthetic providing a compelling reorientation from more conventional modes of inquiry and representation. Developmental language studies have shown that lexical-semantic organization develops between 18 and 24 months of age in monolingual infants. In the present study, we aimed to examine whether voice familiarity facilitates lexical-semantic activation in the infant brain. We recorded the brain activity of 18-month-old, French-learning infants using EEG while they listened to taxonomically related and unrelated spoken word pairs by one voice with which they were familiarized with before the experiment, and one voice with which they were not familiarized. The ERPs were measured in response to related and unrelated target words. Our results showed an N400 effect (greater amplitudes for unrelated as opposed to related target words) over the left hemisphere, only for the familiar voice, suggesting that the voice familiarity facilitated lexical-semantic activation. For unfamiliar voices, we observed an earlier congruence effect (greater amplitudes for related than for unrelated target words). This suggests that although 18-month-olds process lexical-semantic information from unfamiliar speakers, their neural signatures of lexical-semantic processing are less mature. Our results show that even in the absence of personal relation with a speaker, familiarity with a voice augments infant lexical-semantic processing. Background: Communication is a key tool in the nursing profession. It is known that listeners are sensitive to the speaker's voice and interpret the speaker's intentions primarily from the non‐verbal signal conveyed. Aim: To map and discuss the current state of knowledge and research evidence on professional voice use in health and nursing care. Design and Method: A scoping review adherent to the EQUATOR guidelines PRISMA‐ScR. Data Sources: Searches in the EBSCO, CINAHL, Medline, PubMed, PsychInfo and PsycArticles databases were conducted between 1 and 28 February 2023. Results: According to the data (n = 23), health professionals use voice as a vital aspect of caring communication and caring relationships, and in leadership as well as inter‐professional collaboration, to facilitate information exchange and understanding and promote shared decision‐making. The data showed that there is also a rising tendency to explore vocal demands and problems among health professionals. No studies were found on the use of voice in digital health and nursing care services or by social robots. Most of the reviewed studies were cross‐sectional, rather small, and focused primarily on the perspectives of healthcare professionals. Conclusion: The use of voice should be explored as a vital aspect of caring communication and caring relationships from the patients' perspective, and the effects of voice use on listeners' emotions and actions should be examined in different contexts with modern, voice‐specific data collection methods. Studies focusing on voice use in digital health care and by social robots are also needed. By integrating training programmes, education and technological innovations, health care can leverage the full potential of voice‐based communication to promote a more coordinated and patient‐centred care environment, true inter‐professional collaboration and effective leadership. Despite the considerable debate concerning the gig economy, research has yet to investigate what platform workers themselves want. In part, this is due to the difficulty of undertaking traditional social surveys in this sector. Therefore, this article makes use of a novel research design that generates a strategic non‐probability sample of 510 platform workers with which to investigate workers' preferences regarding labour rights, representation and voice. Findings suggest strong support for labour rights, trade unions and co‐determination. The low pay, insecurity, risk and lack of organizational voice that we find provides a rationale for these preferences. Speaking up directly promotes voice endorsement because it enhances communication clarity. Yet, voicers may hesitate to engage in direct voice because it is a dominant communication tactic that may upset, impose on, embarrass, or undermine their leader, potentially resulting in a backlash, greater workload, or a tainted image. These concerns present a puzzle regarding whether alternative communication tactics exist whereby voicers can secure endorsement for improvement‐oriented initiatives without directly challenging their leader. To address this puzzle, we introduce voice inquiry—expressing improvement‐oriented suggestions or concerns in the form of a question—as a submissive communication tactic to secure endorsement. Drawing upon dominance complementarity theory, we argue that voice inquiry prompts endorsement because it enhances leader's sense of power. Given the complementary effect of submissiveness and dominance, we further predict that this effect will be stronger when leader dominance is high. We conducted three Pilot Studies to unpack the content, motivation, prevalence, and submissive nature of voice inquiry. Building on this foundation, we conducted a multi‐wave field study with 373 employees and 178 leaders in a transportation company (Study 1) and a vignette experiment with 243 full‐time workers (Study 2). Across studies, our research demonstrates voice inquiry as a theoretically driven communication tactic that increases endorsement by activating leader sense of power, particularly among dominant leaders. Auditory training can lead to notable enhancements in specific tasks, but whether these improvements generalize to untrained tasks like speech-in-noise (SIN) recognition remains uncertain. This study examined how training conditions affect generalization. Fifty-five young adults were divided into "Trained-in-Quiet" (n = 15), "Trained-in-Noise" (n = 20), and "Control" (n = 20) groups. Participants completed two sessions. The first session involved an assessment of SIN recognition and voice discrimination (VD) with word or sentence stimuli, employing combined fundamental frequency (F0) + formant frequencies voice cues. Subsequently, only the trained groups proceeded to an interleaved training phase, encompassing six VD blocks with sentence stimuli, utilizing either F0-only or formant-only cues. The second session replicated the interleaved training for the trained groups, followed by a second assessment conducted by all three groups, identical to the first session. Results showed significant improvements in the trained task regardless of training conditions. However, VD training with a single cue did not enhance VD with both cues beyond control group improvements, suggesting limited generalization. Notably, the Trained-in-Noise group exhibited the most significant SIN recognition improvements posttraining, implying generalization across tasks that share similar acoustic conditions. Overall, findings suggest training conditions impact generalization by influencing processing levels associated with the trained task. Training in noisy conditions may prompt higher auditory and/or cognitive processing than training in quiet, potentially extending skills to tasks involving challenging listening conditions, such as SIN recognition. Background: Pediatric laryngotracheal stenosis often requires open airway reconstruction. While these surgeries establish an airway for adequate ventilation, many patients develop subsequent dysphonia. Numerous studies have reported outcomes related to voice. Objective: This study aims to evaluate dysphonia in pediatric patients following open airway reconstruction, focusing on acoustic parameters, perceptual voice quality, and voice-related quality of life. Methods: A comprehensive search using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines across 6 databases identified articles involving pediatric patients who underwent open airway reconstruction and reported postoperative vocal acoustic parameters, perceptual voice quality, voice-related quality of life, or vocal mechanics. Articles were assessed for bias risk, and common outcomes were synthesized qualitatively and quantitatively using meta-analyses. Results: Among 4089 articles, 21 were included, involving 497 pediatric patients. Laryngotracheoplasty was the most common procedure followed by cricotracheal resection. The Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V) scale was frequently used to assess voice quality, with a mean score of 55.6 [95% confidence intervals (CIs): 47.9-63.3]. Voice-related quality of life was measured using the pediatric Voice Handicap Index (pVHI) and Pediatric Voice-Related Quality of Life Survey, with mean scores of 35.6 (95% CI: 21.4-49.7) and 83.7 (95% CI: 74.1-93.2), respectively. The fundamental frequency was 210.5 (95% CI: 174.6-246.3). Other common findings included supraglottic phonation, anterior commissure blunting, posterior glottic diastasis, and abnormal vocal cord mobility. Conclusion: Pediatric patients experiencing dysphonia after open airway reconstruction exhibited moderately decreased voice quality and reduced voice-related quality of life. However, there was inconsistency in study protocols and outcome measures used. Preserving voice quality during airway reconstruction is crucial to avoid negative impacts on quality of life. The rapid advancement of deep learning and computer vision technologies has given rise to a concerning class of deceptive media, commonly known as deepfakes. This paper addresses emerging trends in deepfakes, including the creation of hyper-realistic facial manipulations, the incorporation of synthesized human voices, and the addition of fabricated subtitles to video content. To effectively combat these multifaceted deepfake threats, we introduce an ensemble-based deepfake detection framework called the "D-Fence" layer. The D-Fence layer consists of two uni-modal classifiers designed to identify tampered facial and vocal elements, as well as two cross-modal classifiers for interactions between Video-Audio and Audio-Text domains to detect deepfakes across multiple modalities. To evaluate the effectiveness of our framework, we introduce two novel adversarial attacks: the "Bogus-in-the-middle" attack, which strategically inserts counterfeit video frames within authentic sequences, and the "Downsampling attack", designed to create deceptive audio. A comparative study of the D-Fence layer against various state-of-the-art multi-modal deepfake detection systems is conducted, demonstrating that our ensemble architecture outperforms existing classifiers. Under diverse adversarial conditions, our D-Fence layer achieves an impressive detection accuracy of 92%, showcasing its ability to detect deepfakes efficiently and reliably. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, I open a window onto early seventeenth-century efforts to connect theory, pedagogy, and creative practice through selections from Adriano Banchieri’s exercises for two voices in the Cartella musicale (3rd edition, 1614). His transferring of ephemeral teaching exercises from in-person education into a printed book illuminates both his students’ experiences and those of the book’s purchasers. I argue that Banchieri shows thoughtful engagement with the medium of print, manipulating modes of communication and demonstration to shape readers into competent, creative musicians with both a mastery of traditional contrapuntal skills and capability in the modern musical style. Organizational members may be reluctant to express opinions or concerns because they feel that speaking out is futile. This phenomenon, named "acquiescent silence," is examined in this paper through the lens of learned helplessness theory. We tested the learning effect generated by repeated failures to influence situations with voice over time. This learning could foster a state of acquiescent silence that mirrors learned helplessness. Both experimental studies (N = 654) showed that individuals exposed to repetitive instances of low voice instrumentality were less likely to use new voice opportunities and felt increasingly helpless. These findings shed light on the impact of perceived voice ineffectiveness on employee future voice behaviors and propose a framework clarifying the development of acquiescent silence over time. Objectives: This study investigated the effectiveness of a specialized manual physical therapy (PT) program at improving voice among patients diagnosed with concomitant muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) and cervicalgia at a tertiary care voice center. Materials and Methods: Cervicalgia was determined by palpation of the anterior neck. Both voice therapy (VT) and PT was recommended for all patients diagnosed with MTD and cervicalgia. PT included full-body manual physical therapy with myofascial release. Patients underwent: 1) VT alone, 2) concurrent PT and VT (PT with VT), 3) PT alone, 4) VT, but did not have PT ordered by treating clinician (VT without PT order) or 5) VT followed by PT (VT then PT). The pairwise difference in post–Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10) controlling for baseline variables was calculated with a linear regression model. Results: 178 patients met criteria. All groups showed improvement with treatment. The covariate-adjusted differences in mean post–VHI-10 improvement comparing the VT alone group as a reference were as follows: PT with VT 9.95 (95% confidence interval 7.70, 12.20); PT alone 8.31 (6.16, 10.45); VT without PT order 8.51 (5.55, 11.47); VT then PT 5.47 (2.51, 8.42). Social work aspires to empowerment ideals, including taking a 'non-expert' position of professional curiosity, and validating the perspectives of people in contact with services. Yet in child protection, social workers are involved in practice that refutes the views and opinions of people and are positioned by their role as an identifier of abuse and risk manager. Social workers and people who are subject to child protection services can be locked into meaning battles regarding the effect of parental behaviour and the representation of risks to children. These negotiations over meanings are especially difficult in the pre and perinatal period, where who controls the representation of the baby's voice or best interests is fundamental to decision outcomes. Using Fricker's concept of 'testimonial injustice' as an analytical lens, this article draws on studies in two different contexts: Aotearoa New Zealand and Scotland, to examine the implications of the intense mediation of meanings that affect child protection practice. We find that concepts relating to the importance of mothering, love for children, and extended family relationships were sources of mother's disagreements with professional views of risk, but that through qualified agreement or advocacy from community workers, a shared risk narrative could be constructed. Period-doubled phonation, henceforth, period doubling, characterized by voicing periods that alternate in amplitudes and/or frequencies, is often perceived rough and with an indeterminate pitch. Lower pitch percept has been suggested by past studies when the degree of amplitude or frequency modulation increases. However, how listeners use period doubling when identifying linguistic tones remains unclear. The current study uses tasks of categorization with training, followed by imitation of tones manipulated with period doubling (with amplitude and frequency modulation, both separately and jointly) in a novel language. Native Mandarin and English speakers with different levels of music experience were tested. I show that period doubling leads to a low-tone bias in perception and imitation, especially as the modulation degree, particularly that of frequency, increases. Interestingly, interactions with stimulus f0 and modulation type show that in amplitude-modulated tokens, when compared to lower f0 (200 Hz), higher f0 (300 Hz) drives more low-tone responses. Period doubling is also imitated with lowered f0 and creaky quality. Language and music experience does not affect perceptual and imitative responses, suggesting that the perception of period doubling is not language-specific or conditioned by tonal knowledge. Sound for the human voice is produced by vocal fold flow-induced vibration and involves a complex coupling between flow dynamics, tissue motion, and acoustics. Over the past three decades, synthetic, self-oscillating vocal fold models have played an increasingly important role in the study of these complex physical interactions. In particular, two types of models have been established: "membranous" vocal fold models, such as a water-filled latex tube, and "elastic solid" models, such as ultrasoft silicone formed into a vocal fold-like shape and in some cases with multiple layers of differing stiffness to mimic the human vocal fold tissue structure. In this review, the designs, capabilities, and limitations of these two types of models are presented. Considerations unique to the implementation of elastic solid models, including fabrication processes and materials, are discussed. Applications in which these models have been used to study the underlying mechanical principles that govern phonation are surveyed, and experimental techniques and configurations are reviewed. Here, the dynamics of inverse tapered granular chains, which are alignments of beads with progressively increasing radii, are investigated. These chains are subjected to harmonic excitation by a moving wall and probed at the tapered end. Intermediate taperings using Ni-Ti (metal) and Teflon (plastic) granules are considered. The proposed chain is based on the frequency responses. The incident signal is set between 1 Hz and 3 kHz. The system transmits or filters incident signals at low or high driving frequencies, respectively. For intermediate frequencies, similar to the human voice and most musical instruments, the driving frequency is amplified, presenting a median gain of 24 dB (an increase in energy by a factor of 250) over long durations. A transition map, showing regions of transmission, amplification, and filtration as a function of driving amplitude and frequency, is provided. This system could serve as a starting point for studies on natural voice amplifiers, which are important for addressing hearing loss and vocal disorders, as well as other applications requiring mechanical signal amplification. How do we perceive others based on their voices? This question has attracted research and media attention for decades, producing hundreds of studies showing that the voice is socially and biologically relevant, but these studies vary in methodology and ecological validity. Here we test whether vocalizers producing read versus free speech are judged similarly by listeners on ten biological and/or psychosocial traits. In perception experiments using speech from 208 men and women and ratings from 4,088 listeners, we show that listeners' assessments of vocalizer sex and age are highly accurate, regardless of speech type. Assessments of body size, femininity-masculinity and women's health also did not differ between free and read speech. In contrast, read speech elicited higher ratings of attractiveness, dominance and trustworthiness in both sexes and of health in males compared to free speech. Importantly, these differences were small, and we additionally show moderate to strong correlations between ratings of the same vocalizers based on their read and free speech for all ten traits, indicating that voice-based judgments are highly consistent within speakers, whether or not speech is spontaneous. Our results provide evidence that the human voice can communicate various biological and psychosocial traits via both read and free speech, with theoretical and practical implications. This methodological paper connects posthuman conceptualizations of voice with artistic research and examines whether it opens toward different registers and levels of embodied and aesthetic forms of knowing that cut across normative accounts of what it means to know. We start from what Patti Lather calls 'a praxis of stuck places' and ask how to give voice to experiences such as chronic illness and pain, while at the same time disrupting representational forms of illness and pain. To investigate this, we first critically engage with the popular genre of the health diary and its representational form. Secondly, we explore how Lisa A. Mazzei concept of 'voice without subject' can support us in disrupting the normative and representational production of voice, while working with a failing voice. Finally, we analyze the sound installation, A Borrowed Diary —made by M. Broeckmeyer, and explore how it opens up alternative approaches to voice and chronic pain. We will argue that making 'voice without subject' work, touch, and resonate can impact the lives of people who often remain unheard, in that it acknowledges experiences and expressions that are mostly not validated. Creating with 'voice without subject' makes tangible how personal experiences, however, temporarily, contribute to the bigger picture of how we look at and listen to people with illnesses and/or disabilities. Purpose: This case study measured how well the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) improved vocal features, intelligibility, and communicative effectiveness for a multilingual participant with hypokinetic-hyperkinetic dysarthria secondary to suspected progressive supranuclear palsy. LSVT treatment was chosen for the participant due to the strengths and deficits he presented with prior to treatment, and for the anticipated challenges in treatment that may arise from the presence of multilingualism and impaired cognitive functioning. Methods: A multilingual patient in their 60's (English, Spanish, and French) with hypokinetic-hyperkinetic dysarthria secondary to suspected progressive supranuclear palsy completed the standard treatment sessions for LSVT. Assessment measures were taken at baseline, immediately post-treatment, and three-months post-treatment. Results: Improvementswere measured in vocal quality, vocal loudness, intelligibility, and communicative effectiveness immediately post-treatment. Three months posttreatment, improvements in vocal quality and intelligibility were maintained. Conclusion: This case study illustrates that LSVT may be a beneficial treatment for complex clients who are multilingual and present with complex comorbidities and cognitive deficits. LSVT resulted in some meaningful changes in vocal quality, intelligibility, and communicative effectiveness for this individual. Clinicians who work with complex patients may wish to consider the theoretical underpinnings of LSVT, client profile, areas of client need, and ability and desire to complete an intensive treatment program to determine if trialing LSVT is appropriate. Esophageal speech (ES) is a pathological voice that is often difficult to understand. Moreover, acquiring recordings of a patient's voice before a laryngectomy proves challenging, thereby complicating enhancing this kind of voice. That is why most supervised methods used to enhance ES are based on voice conversion, which uses healthy speaker targets, things that may not preserve the speaker's identity. Otherwise, unsupervised methods for ES are mostly based on traditional filters, which cannot alone beat this kind of noise, making the denoising process difficult. Also, these methods are known for producing musical artifacts. To address these issues, a self-supervised method based on the Only-Noisy-Training (ONT) model was applied, consisting of denoising a signal without needing a clean target. Four experiments were conducted using Deep Complex UNET (DCUNET) and Deep Complex UNET with Complex Two-Stage Transformer Module (DCUNET-cTSTM) for assessment. Both of these models are based on the ONT approach. Also, for comparison purposes and to calculate the evaluation metrics, the pre-trained VoiceFixer model was used to restore the clean wave files of esophageal speech. Even with the fact that ONT-based methods work better with noisy wave files, the results have proven that ES can be denoised without the need for clean targets, and hence, the speaker's identity is retained. The vocal behavior of Neotropical birds has received less attention compared to birds in Northern temperate regions. Many bird species rely on acoustic communication to establish and maintain territories and to interact with conspecifics. For this reason, the growing threat of noise pollution in their habitats is a cause for concern. Birds perform behavioral adjustments when confronted with atypical environmental situations (e.g. urban noises, artificial light, human voice or vegetation loss). The aim of this study was to investigate vocal adjustments of Masked Gnatcatcher (Polioptila dumicola) males in environments located near a route with varying level of traffic noise (measured in decibels) and differing percentage of cover vegetation. Linear mixed models (LMMs) were used to analyze the effects of both environmental parameters in P. dumicola song. Results reveal that P. dumicola increases the amplitude of its songs in response to higher levels of traffic noise. Cover vegetation did not show any effect on song parameters. The model with the highest significance demonstrates a positive linear relationship between amplitude and traffic noise. These findings underscore the importance of studying communication alterations in noisy environments and understanding the ecological consequences of such effects on bird populations. Bulk feeders that can automatically feed materials are one of the most commonly used vibration devices in the electronics industry. This study uses voice coil motors to design and implement a dual-axis bulk feeder and a quad-axis bulk feeder, allowing them to handle many kinds of materials. The implemented feeders can improve some of the problems in traditional bulk feeders, such as only one direction of movement, can only handle one kind of material, the contact time between the material and the platform is too long, and the feeder is not suitable to process materials with particular shapes. Two or four voice coil motors are placed under the platform of the implemented feeder. The vibration of the platform is controlled by the up-and-down movements of the voice coil motors, so that the bulk materials on the platform can be moved to the desired direction according to the feeding requirements. This study proposes a control method to control voice coil motors. For example, using different combinations of up-and-down movements of these four voice coil motors, the quad-axis voice coil feeder can move the material in eight horizontal directions, such as up, down, right, left, up right, up left, down right, and down left, as well as vertically flip. Since the frequency and amplitude of each vibration of the voice coil motor can be easily and instantly adjusted through the program, the implemented feeder can handle other types of materials without modifying the hardware of the device. Purpose: This study explored how respiration, voice, and speech were affected following expiratory muscle strength training (EMST) and maintenance training in persons with Parkinson's disease (PD) or multiple sclerosis (MS). Method: Nine participants with PD and six with MS participated in a randomised study, where the effects of EMST, sham, and maintenance treatment were investigated. Outcome measures included maximum expiratory pressure (MEP); maximum phonation time (MPT); intelligibility; verbal diadochokinesis (DDK); speech rate; a self-report form on voice, speech, and communication; and open questions about how the participants experienced the intervention. Group comparisons were performed within and between groups. Result: The PD and the MS groups both improved significantly in MEP, and this improvement remained after 3 months of maintenance EMST. An improvement was also seen in DDK. Post-EMST, 33% of the PD group and 80% of the MS group reported a positive effect on communication. Conclusion: The results of this study support previous evidence that EMST has positive effects on expiratory pressure in persons with PD or MS, but its effect on voice and speech remains unclear. Since subjective reports of the intervention and effects on communication were predominantly positive, further research is needed on larger groups to explore appropriate outcome measures. Background: Music learning induces significant neural changes, enhancing auditory, verbal, and visuospatial skills, IQ, and speech perception. Research studies reveal structural and functional brain plasticity due to music training in adults and children. While musical abilities are linked to formal training, the existence of "musical sleepers" with heightened speech perception without formal training is noteworthy in adults. This study addresses the gap in understanding such phenomena in children, exploring psychophysical abilities in musically adept children, and aiming to impact rehabilitation models. Materials and method: A pre-experimental study involved 164 typically developing children (mean age: 9.93) without musical training. Musical abilities were evaluated using the abbreviated version of Montreal Battery for Evaluation of Musical Abilities (MBEMA) test in DMDX software, covering melody, rhythm, and memory subtests. Psychophysical tests in MATLAB assessed temporal, frequency, intensity, timbre, and binaural resolution. Results: Using a median split based on MBEMA test scores (median: 42), 84 children exhibited poor musical abilities, while 80 showed good ones. Descriptive statistics for MBEMA scores and psychophysical tests were conducted. As data did not follow normal distribution, non-parametric inferential statistics were employed. Mann–Whitney U tests revealed significant differences favouring good musical abilities in all assessments: gap deduction (p = 0.01), pitch discrimination at 500 Hz and 4 kHz (p = 0.00), intensity discrimination at 500 Hz (p = 0.00) and 4 kHz (p = 0.01), profile analysis (p = 0.01), interaural level difference (p = 0.023), and interaural time difference (p = 0.038). Spearman correlation showed highest correlation with pitch discrimination at 500 Hz (r = − 0.538), 4 kHz (− 0.416), intensity discrimination at 4 kHz (r = − 0.367), and 500 Hz (r = − 0.311), profile analysis (r = − 0.313), interaural level difference (r = − 0.276), and gap deduction (r = − 0.235). All were significant (p < 0.01), except for the interaural time difference. Conclusion: Children excelling in music surpassed those with weaker abilities in psychophysical tasks. This echoes past research, underscoring auditory discrimination's influence on musical skills in untrained children. These results potentially support the concept of musical sleepers in children. Key predictors include pitch discrimination, while interaural time difference exhibited minimal correlation. Although several studies have examined the antecedents of employee ethical voice, how it spreads between colleagues is still being determined. We suggest that the contagion of ethical voice among peers depends on employees' attributions of coworker ethical voice and their perceptions of organizational politics, which in turn impacts on employees' moral awareness. We used three waves of lagging survey data from 297 employees in China to test our hypotheses. The results indicate that under a high perception of organizational politics, coworker ethical voice is positively associated with external attribution. Under a low perception of organizational politics, coworker ethical voice is positively associated with employee internal attribution. Rather than external attribution, internal attribution is positively related to moral awareness, which is positively associated with employees' subsequent ethical voice. This paper aims to extend the current understanding of the contagion of ethical voice among peers and provide relevant insights for organizations to encourage employees to express their ethical voice better. AbstractThe goal of this study was to determine whether learning processes and outcomes are affected by the emotional tone of the computer-generated voice in a narrated slideshow. In a between-subjects design, participants viewed a narrated slideshow on lightning formation involving a computer-generated female (Experiment 1) or male voice (Experiment 2) that displayed happy, content, angry, or sad emotion. On subsequent surveys and post-tests, students could recognize positive or negative emotions conveyed by the female voice but not the male voice. The emotional tone of the instructor’s voices had minimal impact on students’ ratings of felt emotion during learning, ratings of social connection with the instructor, or scores on retention and transfer tests of learning outcome. The findings highlight the limitations of computer-generated voices to convey emotions that trigger affective, social, and cognitive processes when an onscreen instructor is absent, thereby suggesting a boundary condition for the cognitive-affective model of e-learning. The proposition of this article is that it is time to re-think Aboriginal self-determination. A process should be allowed to develop that is perhaps less grandiose than the failed Voice, which was rejected in October 2023, but more practical and reflective of Aboriginal social, linguistic, and cultural organisation. A process of self-determination that starts at the bottom and then, if necessary, works its way to the state and federal levels. The post-Voice world of Australia is uncertain. The rejection by public referendum of the Aboriginal Voice has left a void that will take a long time to fill. It is contended in the article that life after the Voice is best to be found by empowerment of local Aboriginal communities; by encouraging hundreds of local voices; by enabling those voices to become a keystone for local community affairs; and for those local Aboriginal voices to cooperate as advocates at the state and federal levels. It is suggested that a bottom-up, rather than a top-down model, would be consistent with Aboriginal social and cultural organisation, and ultimately would endow greater credibility and legitimacy for Aboriginal self-determination initiatives. Many research articles have explored the impact of surgical interventions on voice and speech evaluations, but advances are limited by the lack of publicly accessible datasets. To address this, a comprehensive corpus of 107 Spanish Castilian speakers was recorded, including control speakers and patients who underwent upper airway surgeries such as Tonsillectomy, Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery, and Septoplasty. The dataset contains 3,800 audio files, averaging 35.51 ± 5.91 recordings per patient. This resource enables systematic investigation of the effects of upper respiratory tract surgery on voice and speech. Previous studies using this corpus have shown no relevant changes in key acoustic parameters for sustained vowel phonation, consistent with initial hypotheses. However, the analysis of speech recordings, particularly nasalised segments, remains open for further research. Additionally, this dataset facilitates the study of the impact of upper airway surgery on speaker recognition and identification methods, and testing of anti-spoofing methodologies for improved robustness. Representation is an important role of the nonprofit sector as these organizations can give voice to the priorities of their constituents. This is particularly important for disadvantaged communities that may lack access to traditional democratic processes. What advocacy tactics are most utilized by nonprofit organizations serving disadvantaged populations? Given variation in nonprofit advocacy tactics, which tactics are perceived as most effective? To answer these questions, we look to the framework of tactical repertoires from sociological studies of social movements. Analysis of a survey of New England nonprofits (N = 656, 55 % response rate) indicates that nonprofits serving disadvantaged populations use similar tactics to organizations advocating for other constituencies but employ them at higher rates. These tactics cluster into three tactical repertoires, each a different combination of advocacy tactics. Perceptions of advocacy effectiveness are associated with the size and nature of tactical repertoires, client participation in advocacy, government funding, and perceptions of the policy environment. Geminates (such as the double /k/ in Polish lekki “light”) form a group of consonants that are mainly characterized by longer durations than the corresponding singletons. Most of the research has concentrated on durational and spectral properties of geminates in contrast to singletons. Much less attention has been paid to the realization of the voicing contrast in geminates and whether it is differently implemented than in singletons. In the current study, we contribute to this research with the data from Polish stop geminates. To this end, a total of 49 native speakers of Polish produced all stop geminates and corresponding singletons in wordforms of the same phonological make-up. The measurements included closure duration, voicing ratio, duration, and mean intensity of the release burst. The results showed that the voicing ratio was 0.69, classifying Polish stop geminates as mildly devoiced. There was a significant speaker-dependent variability in that some speakers devoiced all geminates, while others either partially devoiced or never devoiced. The analysis of interactions between geminates and singletons revealed that geminates cancelled voicing cues observed in singletons such as longer durations and lower intensity of the release burst. This essay analyzes the rhetorical framing tactics of a group of disability activists to understand how they use key words, topic shifts, and other framing maneuvers to amplify marginalized voices in public debates. Focusing on a town hall meeting and a legislator update meeting between activists and lawmakers, the author uses stasis theory to analyze how these maneuvers (1) create gateways for marginalized voices to enter the discussion and (2) anchor deliberations around topics of importance to the disabled community. This suggests a more complex role for framing in face-to-face deliberative contexts than studies of framing strategies in written texts have traditionally considered. I argue that a multidimensional view of framing uniting consideration of word choice with attention to interactive dynamics is necessary to appreciate how framing maneuvers can not only shape the content of debates but amplify the voices of people excluded by the tacit rules of democratic deliberation. Background and Aim: To date, little research is available that objectively quantifies female adolescent singing-voice characteristics in light of the physiological and functional developments that occur from puberty to adulthood. This exploratory study sought to augment the pool of data available that offers objective voice analysis of female singers in late adolescence. Methods: Using long-term average spectra (LTAS) and inverse filtering techniques, dynamic range and voice-source characteristics were determined in a cohort of vocally healthy cis-gender female adolescent singers (17 to 19 years) from high-school choirs in Aotearoa New Zealand. Non-parametric statistics were used to determine associations and significant differences. Results: Wide intersubject variation was seen between dynamic range, spectral measures of harmonic organisation (formant cluster prominence, FCP), noise components in the spectrum (high-frequency energy ratio, HFER), and the normalised amplitude quotient (NAQ) suggesting great variability in ability to control phonatory mechanisms such as subglottal pressure (Psub), glottal configuration and adduction, and vocal tract shaping. A strong association between the HFER and NAQ suggest that these non-invasive measures may offer complimentary insights into vocal function, specifically with regard to glottal adduction and turbulent noise in the voice signal. Conclusion: Knowledge of the range of variation within healthy adolescent singers is necessary for the development of effective and inclusive pedagogical practices, and for vocal-health professionals working with singers of this age. Background: The health measures imposed by COVID-19 on workplaces created adverse communication settings. Our cross-sectional study aimed to document the nature and severity of the vocal difficulties experienced by educational professionals a few weeks after the implementation of health measures in schools and early childhood settings in Quebec, Canada while teaching in class. Methods: To this end, we conducted a self-report survey containing nine close-ended questions and one open-ended question regarding self-reported vocal difficulties and the implementation of health measures. The survey was answered by 194 educational professionals in October 2020. Results: Since the introduction of the health measures, respondents reported often or always: having difficulty making themselves heard (66.5%), needing to strain their voice (68.1%), having throat pain after work (38.1%), and being concerned about their vocal health (25.2%). 35.6% perceived that their voice changed moderately or a lot and 75.3% did not feel equipped to take care of their vocal health. Fisher's exact tests revealed the difficulties overall were more present in women (p < 0.05). Discussion: The qualitative analysis of open-ended question answers shows a circular process at play, where the vocal responses to the COVID-19-induced communication barriers contribute to creating more problematic communication settings, thus increasing the challenges for vocal health. Better equipping the professionals to take care of their vocal health by developing resources in their professional settings to help them face vocal challenges in both every day as well as extreme situations, should be a priority. Voice interventions for transgender individuals can address several speech and voice parameters – fundamental frequency, resonance, intonation, rhythm, and intensity. In this study, we focus on fundamental voice frequency and build on existing research to test one technique that has been shown in a preliminary study to effectively adjust fundamental voice frequency in line with clients' goals. More specifically, we employed an adaptation of melodic intonation therapy (MIT) to assess whether it can raise trans women's average fundamental frequency to a significant degree. Eleven trans women participated in two one-to-one therapy sessions, four weeks apart. Results pointed to a statistically significant rise in both their singing and speaking fundamental frequencies following the adapted MIT therapy sessions. Participants were also successful in imitating upward fundamental frequency contours when singing and in producing them independently in the speech modality.
