BODY image - Abstract
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TEENAGE boys , *TEENAGE girls , *DIETARY patterns , *MASS media influence , *FOOD habits , *BODY image , *SELF-esteem - Abstract
Previous studies have shown that social media influences adolescents’ perceptions of their body image and self-esteem. This study examines TikTok’s impact on these aspects, specifically focusing on adolescent boys, a demographic that has been underrepresented in research. Given the scarcity of prior studies on this topic, we employed a qualitative, exploratory methodology. The study sample was purposive, comprising 15 pre-adolescents (ages 10-14) and 15 adolescents (ages 15-19). We conducted semi-structured interviews, which were subsequently transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis with MaxQDA software. Our findings indicate that TikTok can have both positive and negative effects on male adolescents’ self-perception of body image and self-esteem. Certain practices on TikTok were associated with increased body vigilance and changes in sports practices and eating habits. While excessive use of the platform negatively impacted self-esteem, the type of content consumed also played a significant role, leading to positive outcomes in some cases. These results contrast with previous studies focused on female adolescents, highlighting the importance of exploring the male perspective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Body Dysmorphia Disorder (BDD) is characterized by an excessive concern with physical appearance, which has been of interest to the scientific community in recent years. Different variables have been found to influence BDD; therefore, the aim of the present research was to determine the direct and indirect effect of gender, country, age, body mass index, Instagram use, food moralization and body image on dysmorphia; comparing Spanish and Venezuelan nationality. A path analysis was performed with the total sample (208 participants), finding that the variables that directly or indirectly influence are sex, body mass index, food-related guilt, country and body image; also, people who present body dysmorphia behaviors tend to be women, people with high BMI, greater dissonance between their body image and perceived body image, and tend to feel food-related guilt. In addition, in an indirect way, Venezuelans presented greater body dysmorphia behaviors. We conclude the relevance of these variables on BDD and recommend considering these findings when planning intervention strategies and prevention policies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MEDIA exposure , *ONLINE social networks , *BODY image disturbance , *INTERNET addiction , *EATING disorders - Abstract
Social media consist of digital platforms on which users share values and opinions and are currently one of the most popular types of communications media. Exposure to social media has been associated with negative eating behavior outcomes. This study investigated the implications of social media use for the treatment of individuals diagnosed with an eating disorder. The sample consisted of ten patients (eight women) aged between 13 and 38 undergoing treatment in a public outpatient clinic, most of whom were diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa. The data were collected using individual semi-structured interviews lasting on average one hour. The interviews were transcribed literally and in full and the data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. The results were organized into two themes: "Feeling controlled by social media"; and "Learning to control social media use." The findings show that social media plays an ambiguous role in the lives of people in recovery from eating disorders. On one hand, these online environments are pervaded by social pressures and extreme exposure to idealized unhealthy beauty standards, contributing to worsening symptoms. In contrast, they provide an opportunity to create an environment in which it is possible to share experiences, challenges and vulnerabilities, promoting a sense of validation of feelings and attainment of social support. It is hoped that our findings will stimulate reflection on the need to consider the influence of the sociocultural environment in the treatment of eating disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EATING disorders , *PHYSICAL fitness centers , *EXERCISE , *SYMPTOMS , *ANXIETY - Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine a risk model for eating disorders and exercise dependence in women who regularly attend the gym. This study explored the impact of early maladaptive schemas, parental styles, coping mechanisms, sociocultural attitudes toward appearance, and anxious-depressive symptomatology. A total of 338 women (age range 18-40 years) participated in the study. The results suggest that early maladaptive schemas of imperfection/shame and inflexible standards, generated by parental styles characterized by less affective availability and focused on devaluative criticism, overexertion and internalization of guilt when stipulated standards are not met, lead to increased anxiety for social approval. Being approved becomes the only resource of self-validation found by the individual. Specifically, the results show that women who scored at risk for eating disorders and exercise dependence had higher levels of anxiety and depression. In turn, they more frequently used desiderative thinking and escape as coping mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To establish the relationship between body self-esteem and body composition in young adults, both men and women, who attend gyms in a Colombian population.

Body image is the mental representation that each person has of his or her own body and psychological wellbeing arises when the state of mental functioning is in its best condition, discarding negative aspects. The main purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between body image and psychological well being in university students. The study had a quantitative approach, non-experimental design, correlational and cross-sectional scope. The sample consisted of 101 university students, 79 men and 22 women between 18 and 30 years of age. The Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) adapted by Solano and Cano in 2010 was used to evaluate the body image variable and the Ryff Psychological Well-Being Scale adapted to Spanish by Díaz in 2006 was used to evaluate psychological well-being. The results showed that there is no correlation between the variables; they do not present body image concerns (80.2%), and show high psychological wellbeing (39.6%). No relevant differences were found in psychological well-being according to sex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ALCOHOLISM , *BODY image , *ALCOHOL drinking , *CONSUMPTION (Economics) , *EMOTIONS - Abstract
Body image is the set of perceptions, thoughts, emotions and behaviors that a person has in relation to his or her own body, while alcohol consumption is a public problem worldwide, being a substance of greater consumption in adolescence. The objective of this study is to determine the relationship between body image and alcohol consumption in adolescents. The sample used was 120 students between 13 and 18 years of age from an educational unit. The research had a non-experimental quantitative approach with a cross-sectional and correlational scope. The Body Image Questionnaire (BSQ) created by Cooper, Taylor and Fairburn in 1996 and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) created by the World Health Organization in 1992 were used to measure the variables. The results showed that there is no significant relationship between these two variables (Rho= 0.145 p>0.05), as for sex there is no statistically significant difference between men (M=1.85) and women (M=2.96) with a (U=985, p>0.05). The physical appearance of many people with disabilities leads them to feel stigmatised for not conforming to socially imposed ideals of beauty. These aesthetic standards convey lifestyles on Instagram that attract the attention of young audiences. In this regard, previous research has pointed out that people with disabilities also post self-representative images that are leading to new stereotypes of beauty with a potential impact on users without impairments. The aim of this research was to measure the attention and emotional intensity generated by a selection of posts on Instagram made by people with disabilities, in which they display their body image for aesthetic purposes, both in terms of beauty and fashion. Two neurocommunication techniques, eye tracking and galvanic skin response, were used on a sample of 120 Spanish and Portuguese university students who are regular Instagram users. The results indicate that young people without disabilities focus their attention on aspects of the image that clearly show a person's disability, especially regarding specific features, yet there were no appreciable changes in emotional intensity. The findings also highlight the need to integrate heightened awareness and sensitivity regarding the image of people with disabilities by using a cross-curricular approach in the educational system in order to promote full inclusion [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract. The aim of the of this study was to know the influence of online videogames in the construction of the body image among adolescents. For this study, multiple case study methodology has been used, analyzing the meanings that three young people assigned to their collective experiences in the use of online videogames with high physical component. Results from the interviews showed clear differences among participants in term of access and game time of (sport) videogames, sport activities and the influence of the videogames in the embodiment. Whilst the boys (participants 1 and 3) employed a considerable amount of time to online videogames, they choose athletic avatars and practices sports in order to achieve an ideal body shape, participant 2 (girl) showed a restricted use of videogames, she do not practice any sport and focus her embodiment in a more emotive aspect. Connection between the experiences lived on-line and the decision making in the game is discussed. This duality makes conditional in such experiences, which lead to behaviors in relation to their perception of the corporal image. BODY image , *SCIENTIFIC literature , *CONCEPTUAL models , *SATISFACTION - Abstract
Body image is a plural and probabilistic concept that has been investigated from different perspectives in an interdisciplinary literature. This study argues that the plural history of body image definitions and assessments contributed to the emergence of a solid scientific literature on the topic, without divergent definitions preventing the dialogue concerning methods and conceptual models of research. Additionally, it points out possible paths for integrating body image literature based on theoretical models of body representation and technological advances in the area. One possible path for advancing body image research involves specifying the concept at different levels of evidence and/or awareness related to satisfaction, perception and attention toward bodies. Introduction: People with disabilities have historically suffered from the stereotype of not reaching the prevailing standard of physical beauty. The rise of the movement known as body positivity on social media has allowed disabled athletes to portray themselves based on an observable disability. Methodology: The aim of this research is to determine the cognitive perception of 120 youthful Spanish and Portuguese university students regarding the image displayed by athletes with physical disabilities on Instagram. To this end, two neurocommunication techniques have been used: eye tracking, and galvanic skin response (GSR). Results: Overall, athletes attracted more attention to traits that explicitly show their disability than non-athletes with disabilities, as the latter portrayed themselves on Instagram from the perspective of beauty and fashion. Data related to emotional arousal corroborated the data related to attention. Discussion: It seems that specific aspects of an athlete’s disability continue to attract attention from the stereotypical viewpoint of an athlete’s body. The results regarding the focus on beauty and fashion may help to reduce the stigma of social identity perceived by the non-disabled public. Conclusions: These findings seem to indicate that self-portrayal on social networks based on beauty and fashion attracts more audience attention than others, due to the fact that such people present themselves as attractive rather than as people with disabilities, even when they specifically display their disabled trait, which is true in all of the cases. Background: Body image concerns during pregnancy can lead to a number of problems. Understanding these concerns can help health professionals improve health care for pregnant women. Objective: Translate, adapt, and validate the Body Image Concerns During Pregnancy Scale for the Portuguese population (Escala de Preocupação com a Imagem Corporal Durante a Gravidez - EPICDG). Methodology: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted with 231 pregnant women. The psychometric properties of the EPICDG were assessed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Results: The fit indices of the Portuguese 21-item version were identical to those of the original scale. The four-dimension model had the best fit (X2(176) = 446.320; p < 0.001, X2df = 2.536; CFI = 0.91; TLI = 0.89; GFI = 0.86; RMSEA = 0.077, p < 0.001). Conclusion: The results show that the EPICDG has adequate psychometric properties for assessing body image concerns during pregnancy in the Portuguese population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this paper is to analyse the anthropomorphic figures of the Madrid Codex, through the perspective of Mayan visual culture, to understand the forms of representation of the human body and thereby approach the way of assuming the body by the Yucatecan Mayans of the Postclassic Period. The general features of anthropomorphic figures are pointed out, the modules used to build them are characterized and the information offered by linguistic and anthropological research on the subject is used. The body is a totality of interrelated parts, the body is the vehicle for knowledge, communication, and action; in the body both the individual identity and the community character of the human being are expressed, it is also possible to identify the cultural construction that gives predominance to the masculine. Specialized psychological interventions have been developed to reduce the negative impact on body image in patients with breast cancer; however, there are no systematic reviews to assess their efficacy. Objective. To evaluate the evidence and feasibility of psychological interventions available for body image problems in patients with breast cancer. Method. Fifteen articles emerged in four essential databases following the PIO system. Articles appeared between 2011 and 2020. There Seven interventions were analyzed using the PICO system. Additionally, the Shekelle criteria identified each intervention's level of evidence and recommendation. Results. 85% of the studies were conducted in high-income countries; 71% of interventions used individual modality; 71.42% used a face-to-face model, and 28.57% a digital version. The interventions implemented different approaches and strategies, such as cognitive behavioral components, hypnosis, and reflective writing, but all were brief, with an average of six sessions. Interventions with cognitive-behavioral components showed greater efficacy consistency, evidence level, and recommendations than the other studies. Discussion and conclusion. There are different alternatives for psychological intervention to attend body-image problems in patients with breast cancer. Interventions could have an impact even on distal variables, such as depression and quality of life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
