Abstract: International audience; The advent of privacy laws and principles such as data minimization and informed consent are supposed to protect citizens from over-collection of personal data. Nevertheless, current processes, mainly through filling forms are still based on practices that lead to over-collection. Indeed, any citizen wishing to apply for a benefit (or service) will transmit all their personal data involved in the evaluation of the eligibility criteria. The resulting problem of over-collection affects millions of individuals, with considerable volumes of information collected. If this problem of compliance concerns both public and private organizations (e.g., social services, banks, insurance companies), it is because it faces non-trivial issues, which hinder the implementation of data minimization by developers. In this paper, we propose a new modeling approach that enables data minimization and informed choices for the users, for any decision problem modeled using classical logic, which covers a wide range of practical cases. Our data minimization solution uses game theoretic notions to explain and quantify the privacy payoff for the user. We show how our algorithms can be applied to practical cases study as a new PET for minimal, fully accurate (all due services must be preserved) and informed data collection.

Abstract: International audience; This paper is concerned with analytical developments of results firstly introduced by the authors in [1]. These developments are devoted to the optimization of upper bounds of the interval covariance matrices appearing in the Interval Kalman Filter [2]. The proposed study is mainly highlighted through two aspects. Firstly, the optimization is further performed by considering a class of upper bounds and minimizing the traces of these bounds in two stages (in terms of a gain matrix and then with respect to a scalar parameter). Secondly, the paper provides conditions under which the optimal trace value is controlled and hence the proposed Algorithm in [1], namely Optimal Upper Bound Interval Kalman Filter (OUBIKF), is ensured to perform with stability (i.e. without width explosion of the resulting interval estimators). Also under these conditions, the OUBIKF Algorithm, having a similar structure of the Standard Kalman Filter (SKF), is ensured to get a smaller trace upper bound of the covariance matrices in the correction step than the one in the prediction step. Numerical simulations based on anautomotive model is performed to illustrate the developed results.

Abstract: International audience; Cellular materials, in particular metal or polymer foams and beam lattices, are characterized by a complex architecture where the material is concentrated in slender struts. This study is concerned with the construction of numerically efficient samplespecific digital twin for the analysis and characterization of the mechanical behavior of such meta-materials. A method to build an explicit, light, and analysis-suitable isogeometric beam model directly from digital images is proposed. More precisely, as a main contribution, the Virtual Image Correlation method is extended to the case of multiple interconnected beams with varying cross-sections. Special care is also given to the initialization for better efficiency and robustness. Synthetic and real examples of increasing complexity, i.e. curved beams, lattices, and foams, are presented to account for the performance of the developed workflow from digital images to an isogeometric twin for mechanical modelling and simulation.

Abstract: International audience; For the first time, a Zn1.1Ga1.8Ge0.1O4 transparent spinel ceramic has been fully densified by spark plasma sintering. XRD measurements show that this ceramic is composed of a pure cubic spinel phase. SEM analysis revealed a homogeneous and dense microstructure with the average grain size being 200 ± 100 nm. The transmittance of these fine-grained ceramics reached 70 % in the visible range and is very close to 80 % at 2 µm, thus close to the Tmax value deduced from the measurement of the refractive index. The ceramics exhibit excellent mechanical properties with a Young modulus of 222 GPa, a Vickers hardness of 14.25 GPa and a thermal conductivity of 7.3 W.m−1. K−1. By doping with Cr3+ ions, transparent Zn1.1Ga1.8Ge0.1O4 ceramics present both a red luminescence and a long-lasting afterglow during several minutes. Moreover, a near infrared broadband emission at 1.3 µm is also achieved with Ni2+ ions.

Abstract: International audience; The nucleation and crystallization of glass-ceramics are typically influenced by early phase separation, which can impact glass properties. However, it has been challenging to characterize the nanoscale phase separation and understand the nucleation mechanism of lithium disilicate (L2S) glass-ceramics, which has resulted in some controversy. Here, we raised the direct evidence of nanoscale clustering in the glassy phase prior to formal nucleation and crystallization by element distribution. Firstly, the amorphous Li3PO4 phase formed on the boundary between the phase separation area and residual glass matrix, and then nucleation tended to start on this phase boundary. Furthermore, the effect of phase-separation on nucleation and final crystallize products was illustrated. By sufficient phase-separation, the formation of desired Li2Si2O5 and LiAlSi4O10 microcrystals was effectively motivated, which is prerequisite for high mechanical properties and transparency. We hope this work provides guidance to rationally understand the early phase separation in glass for subsequent controlling crystallization.

Abstract: International audience; In the field of flash sintering, microwave energy represents an interesting way to densify ceramics complex shapes, thanks to a contactless volumetric heating. Attaining a fast and homogeneous heating is a critical parameter and hybrid heating, using silicon carbide susceptors, is generally used. In this study, an original multiple susceptors cascade strategy is developed, using both SiC and 3D-printed ZrO2 susceptors. This novel configuration follows perfectly the flash heating scheme, even for high heating rates up to 1000 K.min-1 and leads to a high stability of the "flash" hybrid heating. Flash microwave sintering produced dense (97% relative density) microstructures within 45 s. Based on comprehensive multiphysics simulations of the overall process, in-situ dilatometry measurements, kinetics method analysis and microstructural characterizations, this work highlights the sintering behavior of zirconia and the temperature distribution during flash microwave sintering.

Abstract: International audience; General interest in solvent-free catalytic processes is driven by the development of environmentally and economically acceptable procedures. Such processes require the use of highly active and stable catalysts. This study reports on the synthesis, characterization, and kinetic evaluation of two highly active Pd catalysts supported on different carbons support, i.e., multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) and few-layer graphene (FLG). These catalysts, with similar Pd loading (∼2 wt%) and containing both Pd single atoms (PdSA) and nanoparticles (PdNP), were systematically tested for solvent-free total hydrogenation of squalene (SQE) to obtain high-purity squalane (SQA). Thanks to the unique cooperative catalysis between PdSA and PdNP involving H-spillover, the activities of both catalysts were high compared to catalysts described in the literature. Solvent-free total hydrogenation of SQE could be performed under mild conditions (120 °C, 20 bar H2, 4 h) using ultralow Pd loading (60 ppm). However, since this reduction reaction is highly exothermic (ΔHR= − 765 kJ.mol−1), heat management during the reactor operation with these highly active catalysts is crucial to avoid deactivation and thermal runaway. Under these conditions, Pd/FLG was highly active but deactivated, unlike Pd/CNT, which still has high activity, but does not deactivate. Characterizations (ICP, XPS, Raman, TPD-MS, HAADF-STEM) of the Pd/FLG catalyst before and after reaction, supported by calculations based on density functional theory, allowed us to propose a new mechanism of catalyst deactivation involving the chemical reduction of specific surface oxygen groups of the carbon support induced by H-spillover.

Abstract: International audience; Selective iridium-catalyzed C-H bond borylations of unbiased or directing-group-free substrates typically occur under long reaction times and mild temperatures in order to avoid unselective processes including catalyst deactivation. Herein, we describe a supramolecular approach that enables the C-H bond borylation of challenging pyiridines and imidazoles in very short reaction times (up to 2 hours) with a negligible incubation period for catalyst activation. The catalyst is based on a highly rigid zinc-porphyrin substrate-recognition site in the secondary coordination sphere and a triazolopyridine chelating fragment attached to the first coordination sphere at iridium. The borylation occurs at the C-H bond from the substrate located at four chemical bonds apart from the molecular recognition site with the selectivity being exclusively imposed by the distance between the active site and the molecular recognition site regardless of the nature of the N,N-chelating fragment coordinating to iridium as further supported by DFT calculations. Additional studies (control experiments, NMR, SCXRD) unraveled key catalyst deactivation pathways in which up to three different partners (water, methoxide ligands from the iridium precursor and the triazolopyridine fragment) compete with the N-heterocycle substrate for binding to the molecular recognition site of the supramolecular catalyst. This fundamental understanding made possible the identification of a supramolecular catalyst featuring a 4-methyl substitution pattern in the first coordination sphere at iridium that provides a suitable balance of steric and electronic effects in both primary and secondary coordination spheres, thereby bypassing the manifold catalyst deactivation pathways. DFT calculations further indicated the importance of non-covalent interactions beyond the molecular recognition site on the stabilization of the different intermediates and transition sates.

Abstract: International audience; The study of nonlinear optics in the 1960s attracted considerable attention from a theoretical standpoint, engendering many proposals for practical use of these new photonic effects. Among these suggestions, the development of efficient two-photon absorption (2PA) has attracted sustained interest due to its demonstrated (or potential) use in a broad range of applications that include optical data storage, optical limiting and nanofabrication. The use of 2PA in biological applications is particularly appealing. This is because 2PA offers several advantages for biooriented applications, such as intrinsic three-dimensional resolution, increased penetration depth in biological materials such as tissue and highly focused excitation at half-energy, leading to a decrease of auto-fluorescence and photodamage. In this Primer Review, we introduce the essential background theory needed for an understanding of the field, we describe the key experiments deployed to quantify material performance, we discuss the evolution of 2PA molecular design, and we summarise the state-of-the-art and the existing challenges in the use of 2PA in imaging, therapy and theranostics.

Abstract: Due to their periodic nature, metasurfaces used to perform anomalous reflection raise parasitic harmonic reflections. We show a classical synthesis example of such a structure and highlight its limitations. Floquet analysis and its associated simulation environment are exploited to understand the origin of these parasitic reflections and to mitigate them. The proposed method is based on the optimization of the metasurface periodic pattern: the supercell. A predictive method is built to calculate radar cross-section patterns from supercell Floquet simulation, avoiding dealing with heavy simulations. The proposed model, the optimization outputs, and the general results are exposed in details. Different cases are also discussed to prove the repeatability of the proposed method. Abstract: International audience; For a sustainable economy, biodegradable biopolymers polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are desirable substitutes to petroleum-based plastics that contaminate our environment. Medium-chain-length (MCL) PHA bioplastics are particularly interesting due to their thermoplastic properties. To hamper the high cost associated to PHA production, the use of bacterial mixed cultures cultivated in open systems and using cheap resources is a promising strategy. Here, we studied the operating conditions favouring direct MCL accumulation by activated sludge, using oleic acid as a model substrate and phosphorus limitation in fed-batch bioreactors. Our results confirm the presence of PHA-accumulating organisms (PHAAO) in activated sludge able to accumulate MCL from oleic acid. A positive correlation between phosphorus (P) limitation and PHA accumulation was demonstrated, allowing up to 26% PHA/total biomass accumulation, and highlighted its negative impact on the MCL/PHA fraction in the polymer. Diversity analysis through 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing revealed a differential selection of PHAAO according to the P-limitation level. A differential behaviour for the orders Pseudomonadales and Burkholderiales at increasing P-limitation levels was revealed, with a higher abundance of the latter at high levels of P-limitation. The PHA accumulation observed in activated sludge open new perspectives for MCL-PHA production system based on P-limitation strategy applied to mixed microbial communities.

Abstract: International audience; This paper proposes a circuit model to calculate the current along printed coils used in Resonant Wireless Power Transfer. It considers a system composed of a metamaterial and two coplanar coils, transmitter and receiver, respectively. First, a circuit model for the system is presented. Then, an analytical model is proposed to calculate the self-inductance of printed inductors, their characteristic resistance, and the mutual inductance between coils. The proposed formulation for calculating the mutual inductance between inductors is based on Neumann’s formula. The practical results validate the model precision, obtaining a maximum deviation of approximately 8%, 3%, and 3%, respectively. Due to the generality of this approach, it can also be applied to more complex structures such as metasurfaces. The proposed 3-D models proved to be ideal for modeling the printed inductor. Furthermore, this model proved to be computationally more efficient for analyzing large systems when compared to commercial full-wave simulation software, with a reduction in the computational time larger than three orders of magnitude.

Abstract: International audience; Weathering phenomena are ubiquitous in urban environments, where it is easy to observe severely degraded old buildings as a result of water penetration. Despite being an important part of any realistic city, this kind of phenomenon has received little attention from the Computer Graphics community compared to stains resulting from biological or flow effects on the building exteriors. In this paper, we present physically-inspired deep weathering effects, where the penetration of humidity (i.e., water particles) and its interaction with a building's internal structural elements result in large, visible degradation effects. Our implementation is based on a particle-based propagation model for humidity propagation, coupled with a spring-based interaction simulation that allows chemical interactions, like the formation of rust, to deform and destroy a building's inner structure. To illustrate our methodology, we show a collection of deep degradation effects applied to urban models involving the creation of rust or of ice within walls.

Abstract: International audience; Lanthanum oxysulfide (La2O2S) was investigated as infrared transparent ceramic to benefit from stronger chemical bonds and superior mechanical performances to that of non-oxide benchmark infrared materials. La2O2S ceramics were processed by hot-pressing powders prepared by combustion synthesis followed by a sulfurization treatment. Powders and ceramics were characterised through various techniques (XRD, UV-Vis-IR spectroscopy, particle size analysis, SEM, Impulse Excitation Technique, microhardness and fracture toughness tests) to assess their purity, study their microstructure and determine their optical and mechanical properties. The study reports the first IR transmission spectra, Poisson’s ratio, Young’s and shear moduli and fracture toughness values of La2O2S polycrystalline ceramics. The ceramics showed transparency in the 2-11 μm range and their mechanical performances were all superior to that of commercial infrared ceramics. The best transmission (89% of the theoretical transmission) was measured at 7.3 µm for 1 mm-thick ceramics hot-pressed at 1200-1250°C.

Abstract: International audience; The structural and radio frequency (RF) design and optimization of a large deployable faceted reflectarray (RA) generating double polarization contour beam are presented in this work. The issue addressed is the thermoelastic stability of large RAs and the impact of the thermoelastic deformation (TED) under transverse thermal gradient on the RA performances. Finite element TED analysis is conducted on a deployable RA with self-standing structures, demonstrating the detrimental effects of the in-orbit TED impact on the RA performances, estimated to be above 3 dB losses. To this extent, a novel structural solution is proposed, based on the use of reliable mechanical support capable to mitigate the TED. The mechanical design reorientation is contingent on the RF design reformulation. The proposed novel mechanical and RF co-design concept and methodology allows the conception of a low-profile, thermo-structurally stable RA with compliant radiation patterns and high cross-polarization discrimination in the worst case thermal load. This methodology is based on a direct optimization of nine-panel faceted RA composed of advanced high-order Phoenix cells directly optimized to fulfill the contoured beam requirements and by respecting the local periodicity requirements of the layout.

Abstract: We consider a classic rendezvous game in which two players try to meet each other on a set of n locations. In each round, every player visits one of the locations, and the game finishes when the players meet at the same location. The goal is to devise strategies for both players that minimize the expected waiting time till the rendezvous. In the asymmetric case, when the strategies of the players may differ, it is known that the optimum expected waiting time of [Formula: see text] is achieved by the wait-for-mommy pair of strategies, in which one of the players stays at one location for n rounds, while the other player searches through all the n locations in a random order. However, if we insist that the players are symmetric—they are expected to follow the same strategy—then the best known strategy, proposed by Anderson and Weber [Anderson EJ, Weber RR (1990) The rendezvous problem on discrete locations. J. Appl. Probab. 27(4):839–851], achieves an asymptotic expected waiting time of [Formula: see text]. We show that the symmetry requirement indeed implies that the expected waiting time needs to be asymptotically larger than in the asymmetric case. Precisely, we prove that for every [Formula: see text], if the players need to employ the same strategy, then the expected waiting time is at least [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text]. We propose in addition a different proof for one our key lemmas, which relies on a result by Ahlswede and Katona [Ahlswede R, Katona GOH (1978) Graphs with maximal number of adjacent pairs of edges. Abstract: International audience; Pseudo-Haptic techniques, or visuo-haptic illusions, leverage user’s visual dominance over haptics to alter the users’perception. As they create a discrepancy between virtual and physical interactions, these illusions are limited to a perceptual threshold. Many haptic properties have been studied using pseudo-haptic techniques, such as weight, shape or size. In this paper, we focus on estimating the perceptual thresholds for pseudo-stiffness in a virtual reality grasping task. We conducted a user study (n = 15) where we estimated if compliance can be induced on a non-compressible tangible object and to what extent. Our results show that (1) compliance can be induced in a rigid tangible object and that (2) pseudo-haptics can simulate beyond 24 N/cm stiffness (k ≥ 24N/cm, between a gummy bear and a raisin, up to rigid objects). Pseudo-stiffness efficiency is (3) enhanced by the objects’ scales, but mostly (4) correlated to the user input force. Taken altogether, our results offer novel opportunities to simplify the design of future haptic interfaces, and extend the haptic properties of passive props in VR.

Abstract: National audience; Objectifs : Les médecines non conventionnelles ne sont pas dénuées de toxicité et il est pertinent d’établir un état des lieux des connaissances du grand public vis-à-vis des huiles essentielles. Il s’agit d’identifier le profil des victimes d’une intoxication, les voies d’administration et les symptômes ainsi que les huiles essentielles incriminées.Méthodes : Deux enquêtes, à destination du grand public et des professionnels de santé, ont été diffusées (janvier-mars 2019). En complément, les données du centre antipoison d’Angers sur la période 2017-2018 ont été analysées et comparées avec les données de notre enquête.Résultats : Nos enquêtes rassemblent 623 et 59 réponses. Les données du centre antipoison d’Angers recensent 741 intoxications. Les précautions d’emploi et les contre-indications des huiles essentielles sont peu connues puisque 5% des répondants les identifient correctement. Abstract: International audience; New Blechert-type ruthenium complexes containing cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) ligands are reported. These catalysts demonstrate remarkable thermal stability in solution and excellent catalytic performances at low catalytic loading (up to 0.005 mol %) in ring-closing metathesis (RCM), macro-RCM, ring-closing enyne metathesis (RCEYM), cross-metathesis (CM), ethenolysis and ring-opening cross metathesis (ROCM). Moreover, up to 95% enantiomeric excess (ee) was obtained in asymmetric ring-opening cross metathesis (AROCM) and 57% ee was obtained in asymmetric cross-metathesis (ACM).

Abstract: International audience; Tamoxifen, the gold standard drug for endocrine therapy for breast cancer, modulates the phosphorylation status of the TAU protein in Alzheimer’s disease by inhibiting CDK5 kinase activity. Its binding to p25 prevents CDK5/p25 complexation and hence a decrease of CDK5 activity. In breast tumors, this complex is involved in the proliferation and survival of cancer cells, as well as in the disease’s prognosis. Still, the molecular stability of the CDK5/p25 complex following tamoxifen exposure in this cancer type has not yet been clearly deciphered. Here, we report the functional characterization of CDK5 and its p25 regulatory subunit in the absence and presence of tamoxifen. In addition, two novel inhibitors of the kinase activity of the CDK5/p25 complex are identified, both of which would reduce the risk of recurrence of estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancers and prevent drawbacks induced by tamoxifen exposure. Accordingly, 6His-CDK5 and 6His-p25 have been expressed and purified. Fluorescence anisotropy measurements have been used to assess that the two proteins do form an active complex, and thermodynamic parameters of their interaction were measured. It was also confirmed that tamoxifen directly binds to p25 and inhibits CDK5 kinase activity. Similar observations were obtained using 4-hydroxytamoxifen, an active metabolized form of tamoxifen. Two novel compounds have been identified here that harbor a benzofuran moiety and were shown to target directly p25, and their bindings resulted in decreased CDK5 kinase activity. This encouraging alternative opens the way to the ensuing chemical optimization of this scaffold. It also promises a more specific therapeutic approach that may both tackle the pathological signaling in breast cancer and provide a potential new drug for Alzheimer’s disease.

Abstract: International audience; This work reports the preparation of new quaternary sulfides Cs(2)Ln(3)CuS(8) (Ln = La-Nd, Sm-Tb), their original crystal and electronic structures, and their magnetic properties. The sulfides were prepared using a reactive flux method from mixtures of Ln(2)S(3) (EuS), Cs(2)S(6), Cu(2)S, and S. They crystallize in a new type of structure (C2/m space group) and exhibit a layer-like crystal structure, which is a hybrid of those of the ACe(2)CuS(6) series (A = Cs, K) and that of K(2)CeCu(2)S(4). The values of the optical band gap calculated by the Kubelka-Munk equation are in the range of 1.2-2.62 eV depending on the nature of the Ln ion. The Cs(2)Gd(3)CuS(8) compound displays relatively great magnetic refrigerating properties at cryogenic temperature with the mass entropy change (-ΔS(M)) reaching 19.5 J kg(-1) K(-1) at 3.5 K for ΔH = 5 T.

Abstract: International audience; We herein demonstrate the acylsilane-directed Rh-catalyzed arene C-H bond alkylation with maleimides. The resulting derivatives were utilized in visible-light-induced intramolecular siloxycarbene-amide cyclization for the synthesis of new tricyclic γ-lactams. In parallel, we also harnessed the same acylsilane and maleimide units through [3 + 2] carbo-annulation by using Ru-catalysis. A wide range of maleimides and aroylsilanes were used to establish the broadness of these transformations.

Herein, we show that porous silicon chemically modified using monolayers of n-propyldimethylmetoxysilane molecules, can be a good candidate for the fingerprinting of Lysophosphatidylcholine (LysoPC) in plasma, without any pre-treatment of the sample, for DIOS-MS-based diagnosis like sepsis diagnosis. Results are correlated to the location of LysoPC molecules inside/outside the pores, determined by time of flight-secondary ions mass spectrometry profiling, and to their physico-chemical properties.

Abstract: International audience; Epoxy vitrimers encompass many advantages compared to traditional epoxy materials such as recyclability, repairability, and reprocessability. These properties are induced by the incorporation of dynamic reversible covalent bonds. Recently, the incorporation of aromatic disulfide bridges that are dynamic has expanded the development of new eco-friendly epoxy materials. Herein, we studied a bio-based aliphatic disulfide based on cystamine as a hardener with a vanillin-derived bio-sourced epoxy to prepare fully bio-based epoxy vitrimers. This article provides a comparative study between cystamine and an aromatic disulfide benchmark hardener issued from petrol resources. This work demonstrated that the presence of this aliphatic hardener has a significant influence not only on the reactivity, but most importantly on the resulting dynamic properties. An interesting yet counterintuitive accelerating effect of the dynamic exchanges was clearly demonstrated with only 2 to 20% of molar fraction of cystamine added to the aromatic disulfide formulation. A similar glass transition was obtained compared to the purely aromatic analogue, but relaxation times were decreased by an order of magnitude.

Abstract: Valorizing plant cell wall, marine and algal polysaccharides is of utmost importance for the development of the circular bioeconomy. This is because polysaccharides are by far the most abundant organic molecules found in nature with complex chemical structures that require a large set of enzymes for their degradation. Microorganisms produce polysaccharide-specific enzymes that act in synergy when performing hydrolysis. Although discovered since decades enzyme synergy is still poorly understood at the molecular level and thus it is difficult to harness and optimize. In the last few years, more attention has been given to improve and characterize enzyme synergy for polysaccharide valorization. In this review, we summarize literature to provide an overview of the different type of synergy involving carbohydrate modifying enzymes and the recent advances in the field exemplified by plant cell-wall degradation.

Abstract: International audience; Transfer impedance is a main characteristic to describe the shielding performance of shielded cables at least up to 1 GHz. Traditionally, methods like line-injection and triaxial cell have been used to characterize it at ambient laboratory conditions. While the ambient laboratory conditions might represent appropriate environmental conditions for some industries, in others, like automotive, they are only a small subset of the real conditions. Thus, there is a need to characterize the transfer impedance over different environmental conditions. In this article, the authors present and verify a new triaxial cell design that is aimed to provide reliable measurements during high thermal and mechanical stresses. First, the cell performance is compared to a commercial cell at laboratory ambient conditions. Then, measurements are performed with the new cell at highly accelerated life testing conditions. Under these high thermal and mechanical stress conditions the cell performance is verified, and results on typical shielded cable performance under the same conditions are given.

Abstract: International audience; The worldwide adoption of the Internet of things (IoT) depends on the massive deployment of sensor nodes and timely data collection. However, installing the required ground infrastructure in remote or inaccessible areas can be economically unattractive or unfeasible. Cost-effective nanosatellites deployed in low Earth orbits (LEO) are emerging as an alternative solution: on-board IoT gateways provide access to remote IoT devices, according to direct-to-satellite IoT (DtS-IoT) architectures. One of the main challenges of DtS-IoT is to devise communication protocols that scale to thousands of highly constrained devices served by likewise constrained orbiting gateways. In this paper, we tackle this issue by first estimating the (varying) size of the device set underneath the (mobile) nanosatellite footprint. Then, we demonstrate applicability of the estimation when used to intelligently throttle DtS-IoT access protocols. Since recent works have shown that MAC protocols improve the throughput and energy efficiency of a DtS-IoT network when a network size estimation is available, we present here a novel and computationally-efficient network size estimator in DtS-IoT: our optimistic collision information (OCI) based estimator. We evaluate OCI's effectiveness with extensive simulations of DtS-IoT scenarios. Results show that when using network size estimations, the scalability of a frame slotted Aloha-based DtS-IoT network is boosted 8-fold, serving up to 4 × 10 3 devices, without energy efficiency penalties. We also show the effectiveness of the OCI mechanism given realistic detection ratios and demonstrate its low computational cost implementation, making it a strong candidate for network estimation in DtS-IoT.

Abstract: Current quantum systems based on spin qubits are controlled by classical electronics located outside the cryostat at room temperature. This approach creates a major wiring bottleneck, which is one of the main roadblocks toward truly scalable quantum computers. Thus, we propose a scalable memristor-based programmable DC source that could be used to perform biasing of quantum dots inside of the cryostat (i.e. in-situ). This novel cryogenic approach would enable to control the applied voltage on the electrostatic gates by programming the resistance of the memristors, thus storing in the latter the appropriate conditions to form the quantum dots. In this study, we first demonstrate multilevel resistance programming of a TiO2-based memristors at 4.2 K, an essential feature to achieve voltage tunability of the memristor-based DC source. We then report hardwarebased simulations of the electrical performance of the proposed DC source. A cryogenic TiO2-based memristor model fitted on our experimental data at 4.2 K was used to show a 1 V voltage range and 100 uV in-situ memristor-based DC source. Finally, we simulate the biasing of double quantum dots enabling sub-2 minutes in-situ charge stability diagrams. This demonstration is a first step towards more advanced cryogenic applications for resistive memories such as cryogenic control electronics for quantum computers.

Abstract: International audience; Teleoperating robotic manipulators can be complicated and cognitively demanding for the human operator. Despite these difficulties, teleoperated robotic systems are still popular in several industrial applications, e.g., remote handling of hazardous material. In this context, we present a novel haptic shared control method for minimising the manipulator torque effort during remote manipulative actions in which an operator is assisted in selecting a suitable grasping pose for then displacing an object along a desired trajectory. Minimising torque is important because it reduces the system operating cost and extends the range of objects that can be manipulated. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in a series of representative real-world pick-and-place experiments as well as in a human subjects study. The reported results prove the effectiveness of our shared control vs. a standard teleoperation approach. We also find that haptic-only guidance performs better than visualonly guidance, although combining them together leads to the best overall results.

Abstract: We propose a dynamic augmentation scheme for the asymptotic solution of the nonlinear algebraic loops arising in well-known input saturated feedbacks typically designed by solving linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). We prove that the existing approach based on dynamic augmentation, which replaces the static loop by a dynamic one through the introduction of a sufficiently small time constant, works under some restrictive sufficient well-posedness conditions, requiring the existence of a diagonal Lyapunov matrix. However it can fail in general, even when the algebraic loop is well-posed. Then, we propose a novel approach whose effectiveness is guaranteed whenever wellposedness holds. We also show how this augmentation allows preserving the guaranteed region of attraction with Lyapunovbased designs, as long as a gain parameter is sufficiently large. We finally propose an adaptive version of the scheme where this parameter is adjusted online. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed solutions.

Abstract: International audience; Current trends in the aerospace industry for the digitization of data, tools, and services call for novel solutions that can keep track of the latest technological advancements. Moreover, the increasing drive toward model-based approaches imposes the use of models for the development of complex systems, such as satellites. New types of methods and tools are needed in order to manage the still-growing complexity of embedded systems and their corresponding models. This paper addresses issues related to space systems (in-service) operations and proposes a multimodel approach to address them. The multimodel approach aims at facilitating the task of operational diagnosis by creating a monitoring and diagnosis-dedicated system model derived from existing system design (architecture, functional behavior, and safety) models. The purpose of the diagnosis-dedicated model is to enable the codesign of the system and its diagnosis tools in order to improve the performance of diagnosis activities and the system’s availability. This paper demonstrates the interests of the suggested approach with regard to the limitations of current practices.

Abstract: International audience; The lane-keeping assistance design for steer-by-wire road vehicles is a multi-objective control problem that addresses lane tracking, improvement of driver comfort and ensuring vehicle stability. The designed architecture must be sensitive to various driver behaviors, provide assistance to drivers whenever required and ensure a smooth transition of authority between manual and automated driving modes. In this work, we propose a novel shared lane-keeping controller-based on quasi-continuous high-order sliding mode control dealing with the above challenges. The parameters of the controller are characterized by an upper bound estimate of the lateral winds force and the road curvature which acts as disturbances. Using the sharing parameter dependent on the monitored driver attribute, the authority is smoothly transitioned between various modes while accounting for driver behaviors. Experimental results on the SHERPA vehicle simulator shows the real-time implementation feasibility. Extensive results and discussions are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and the applicability of the proposed controller.

Abstract: We study its controllability around the ground state when the linearized system is not controllable and wonder whether the quadratic term can help to recover the directions lost at the first order. More precisely, in this paper, we formulate assumptions under which the quadratic term induces a drift which prevents the small-time local controllability (STLC) of the system in appropriate spaces. For finite-dimensional systems, quadratic terms induce coercive drifts in the dynamic, quantified by integer negative Sobolev norms, along explicit Lie brackets which prevent STLC.In the context of the bilinear Schr{\"o}dinger equation, the first drift, quantified by the $H^{-1}$-norm of the control, was already observed and used to deny STLC with controls small in $L^\infty$. In this article, we improve this result by denying STLC with controls small in $W^{-1, \infty}$. Furthermore, for any positive integer $n$, we formulate assumptions under which one may observe a quadratic drift quantified by the $H^{-n}$-norm of the control and we use it to deny STLC in suitable spaces.

Abstract: Low-tech approaches have come to the fore in the last few years, mainly in opposition to the techno-optimistic model proposed to solve current and future environmental crises. However, low-tech thinking is multifaceted, making the concept potentially rich but also vague. This article develops a seven-principle framework to categorize low-tech concepts based on an abductive approach which included a literature review and interviews with low-tech actors. Principle occurrence was assessed among the authors and interviewees. The results demonstrate that the low-tech movement entails more than a shift to robust and less-consumptive technical artifacts. While resource efficiency and material reuse are important traits of low-tech approaches, technical appropriation is the most frequently cited key principle in the literature and by the actors. This delineation into several principles can help to differentiate low-tech from other sustainability concepts related to resource conservation such as frugal innovations and circular economy. We aim in this article to open a discussion about the ways low-tech proponents are seeking to introduce transformative development pathways to sustainability.

Abstract: International audience; Abstract This article is focused on the application of plasma technology for the development of microwave lens antennas with electronically controllable radiation gain. With this aim, the analytical background and design procedure for designing a biconcave lens based on plasma dielectric material are presented. The procedure is used to design a plasma lens antenna with a pyramidal horn feed. The effect of switching the designed lens ON and OFF on the radiation gain of the lens antenna is investigated. It is also shown that the plasma frequency of the lens can be used to dynamically adjust the radiation gain. A one-dimensional version of the proposed plasma lens operating at 10 GHz has been developed to validate the concept. Experimentally measured characteristics of a fabricated prototype of the lens antenna based on commercially available fluorescent lamps confirm the presented design procedure and numerical results. The results also show that changing the plasma frequency of the lens can be used to adjust the radiation gain of the proposed lens antenna.

Abstract: Achieving high solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency concomitant with long-term durability using low-cost, scalable photo-absorbers is a long-standing challenge. Here we report the design and fabrication of a conductive adhesive-barrier (CAB) that translates >99% of photoelectric power to chemical reactions. The CAB enables halide perovskite-based photoelectrochemical cells with two different architectures that exhibit record STH efficiencies. The first, a co-planar photocathode-photoanode architecture, achieved an STH efficiency of 13.4% and 16.3 h to t 60 , solely limited by the hygroscopic hole transport layer in the n-i-p device. The second was formed using a monolithic stacked silicon-perovskite tandem, with a peak STH efficiency of 20.8% and 102 h of continuous operation before t 60 under AM 1.5G illumination. These advances will lead to efficient, durable, and low-cost solar-driven water-splitting technology with multifunctional barriers.

Abstract: International audience; Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are over-stressed to accelerate High-Performance Computing applications and are used to accelerate Deep Neural Networks in several domains where they have a life expectancy of many years. These conditions expose the GPUs hardware to (premature) aging, causing permanent faults to arise after the usual end-of-manufacturing test. Techniques to assess the impact of permanent faults in GPUs are then strongly required, thus allowing to estimate the reliability risk and to possibly mitigate it. In this paper, we present a method to evaluate the effects of permanent faults affecting the GPU scheduler and control units, which are the most peculiar and stressed resources, along with the first figures that allow quantifying these effects. We characterize over 5.83x10^5 permanent fault effects in the scheduler and controllers of a gate-level GPU model. Then, we map the observed error categories in software by instrumenting the code of 13 applications and two convolutional neural networks, injecting more than 1.65x10^5 permanent errors. Our two-level fault injection strategy reduces the evaluation time from hundreds of years of gate-level evaluation to hundreds of hours.We found that faults in the GPU parallelism management units can modify the opcode, the addresses, and the status of thread(s) and warp(s). The large majority (up to 99%) of these hardware permanent errors impacts the running software execution. Errors affecting the instruction operation or resource management hang the code, while 45% of errors in the parallelism management or control-flow induce silent data corruptions.

Abstract: International audience; Machine learning based anomaly and attack detection is a topic under the spotlights for more than one decade. It is raising a significant research effort worldwide. The reasons of this interest lie in the ability of machine learning to introduce a large part of autonomy in the attacks detection process compared to the classical signature based approach, and then reduces the management cost of networks for NetOps, provides rapid and efficient results, and is prone to detect 0d attacks. This paper confirms this efficiency showing that using the simple Random Forest (RF) algorithms together with features selection allows detection ratio greater than 99%. However, despite a large set of attempts on the training stage for improving this detection ratio, RF never detects 100% of attacks. It especially always misses some attacks in the traffic, especially under-represented ones in the training dataset. False Negatives are certainly the most dramatic events for network security. In addition, it makes adversarial learning very easy to perform. This paper then presents a controversial study on machine learning based attack detection (using the significantly illustrative RF example), and its trustworthiness limits. This paper is then trying to break the current dogma that machine learning is THE solution for future cyber-security systems.

Abstract: International audience; Every winter, respiratory viruses put most Emergency Departments (ED) around the world under intense pressure. To reduce the consequent stress for hospitals, anticipation of the massive increase of intakes for illness-based symptoms is essential. As the Covid-19 2020 pandemic clearly illustrates, patients are not systematically tested. The ED staff therefore has no real-time knowledge of the presence of the virus in the patients flow. To address this issue, we propose here to use the hospital's laboratory-confirmed database as an attractor for the manifold-based approach for clustering the clinical codes associated with respiratory viruses. We propose a new framework based on the embedding of time series onto the Stiefel manifold, coupled with a density-based clustering algorithm (HDBSCAN) enhanced by a reduction of dimension (UMAP) for the clustering on that manifold. In particular, we show, based on real data sets of two academic hospitals in France, the significant benefits of using geometrical approaches for time series clustering as compared to traditional methods.

In the ABFO model, workplaces are not assigned and each worker is free to choose where they wishes to work. The choice of a workplace is made through placement criterias, which at first sight seem to indicate individual needs difficult to link to the concept of activity. In this text we propose to question certain placement criteria collected from observations and interviews conducted during a thesis. The aim is to link them with a collective dimension. On the basis of the placement criteria, we can finally grasp the link between the worker as an individual and their relationship with others through encounters in different collectives. Collectives with different forms and functions allowing the worker a dialogical relationship in their activity enabling them to answer questions that they cannot resolve alone.; S’installer dans un bureau en flex-office suppose de faire des choix. Dans le modèle du flex-office les places de travail ne sont pas attitrées et chaque travailleur est libre de s’installer où il le souhaite. Le choix d’une place de travail s’opère via des critères d’installation, qui à première vue, nous semble indiquer des besoins individuels difficiles de rattacher à l’activité. Dans ce texte nous proposons de questionner certains critères d’installation recueillis à partir d’observations et d’entretiens menés durant un travail de thèse. L’objectif est de les mettre en lien avec une dimension collective. À partir des critères d’installation, nous pouvons finalement nous saisir du lien entre le travailleur en tant qu’individu et son rapport à autrui à travers la rencontre dans différents collectifs. Collectifs aux formes et aux fonctions différentes permettant au travailleur un rapport dialogique dans l’activité lui permettant de répondre à des questions qu’il ne peut résoudre seul.

Abstract: International audience; When an attacker targets a system, he aims to remain undetected as long as possible. He must therefore avoid performing actions that are characteristic of an identified malicious behavior. One way to avoid detection is to only perform actions on the system that appear legitimate. That is, actions that are allowed because of the system configuration or actions that are possible by diverting the use of legitimate services. This article presents and experiments AWARE (Attacks in Windows Architectures REvealed), a defensive tool able to query a Windows system and build a directed graph highlighting possible stealthily attack paths that an attacker could use during the propagation phase of an attack campaign. These attack paths only rely on legitimate system actions and the use of Living-Off-The-Land binaries. AWARE also proposes a range of corrective measures to prevent these attack paths.; Lorsqu'un attaquant cible un système, son objectif est de rester indétecté le plus longtemps possible. Il doit donc éviter d'effectuer des actions caractéristiques d'un comportement malveillant identifié. Une façon d'éviter la détection est de n'effectuer que des actions sur le système qui semblent légitimes. C'est-à-dire des actions autorisées en raison de la configuration du système ou des actions possibles en détournant l'utilisation de services légitimes. Cet article présente et expérimente AWARE (Attacks in Windows Architectures REvealed), un outil défensif capable d'interroger un système Windows et de construire un graphe dirigé mettant en évidence les chemins d'attaque furtifs possibles qu'un attaquant pourrait utiliser lors de la phase de propagation d'une campagne d'attaque. Ces chemins d'attaque reposent uniquement sur des actions système légitimes et l'utilisation de binaires Living-Off-The-Land. AWARE propose également une gamme de mesures correctives pour prévenir ces chemins d'attaque.

Abstract: International audience; The control of biofouling is required to improve membranes performances for water filtration. In this context, developing bioinspired approaches to modify membranes and give them antifouling properties is an interesting alternative. In this study, we elaborated new anti-biofouling membranes by coating them with vanillin, a natural bioactive molecule acting as a Quorum Sensing Inhibitor (QSI). First, the adsorption of vanillin by filtration was optimized to obtain homogeneous surface modifications. The modified membranes were then characterized in terms of physical-chemical properties: the results showed that they were more hydrophobic and exhibited a 14% decrease in pure water flux. Then, their anti-fouling properties were evaluated using complementary multiscale characterization methodologies; AFM single-cell experiments showed that vanillin adsorption had an effect on both the probability of bacterial cells to adhere to the surface, and on the force of adhesion. Direct EFM and SEM observation and adhesion assays further confirmed the effect of vanillin-modified membranes at the population-scale which showed a decrease in the bacterial coverage rate up to 50%. Altogether, it confirms the multifunctionality of vanillin-coated membranes against biofouling: reduction of bacterial initial adhesion by changing the membranes surface properties and reduction of biofilm formation by quorum sensing inhibition

Abstract: International audience; Most classical SLAM systems rely on the static scene assumption, which limits their applicability in real world scenarios. Recent SLAM frameworks have been proposed to simultaneously track the camera and moving objects. However they are often unable to estimate the canonical pose of the objects and exhibit a low object tracking accuracy. To solve this problem we propose TwistSLAM++, a semantic, dynamic, SLAM system that fuses stereo images and LiDAR information. Using semantic information, we track potentially moving objects and associate them to 3D object detections in LiDAR scans to obtain their pose and size. Then, we perform registration on consecutive object scans to refine object pose estimation. Finally, object scans are used to estimate the shape of the object and constrain map points to lie on the estimated surface within the bundle adjustment. We show on classical benchmarks that this fusion approach based on multimodal information improves the accuracy of object tracking.
