This study investigates the transformation of e-commerce warehouse operations by integrating Lean Six Sigma tools to enhance efficiency and sustainability. Beginning with Value Stream Mapping (VSM) to identify inefficiencies, followed by a Hoshin Kanri plan to align improvement initiatives with strategic objectives, the study implemented measures such as pallet pooling, process standardization, automation in inspection and picking, layout optimization, and Kanban systems for continuous improvement. A case study of a local e-commerce warehouse specializing in medical devices and healthcare products identified 29 activities across receiving, inspection, storing, picking, packing, and shipping, highlighting inefficiencies addressed through Lean-driven initiatives. These efforts resulted in a 23% reduction in total lead time, doubled value-added time, and significant improvements in inspection, picking, packing, and automation, reducing delays, lowering costs, and enhancing workflow. The study fills a gap in the literature by integrating multiple Lean tools and utilizing the Critical to Quality (CTQ) matrix to ensure sustainable improvements in e-commerce warehousing, emphasizing the strategic value of Lean Six Sigma in creating efficient, customer-focused operations. Like Kanban or classic inventory management, Demand Driven Material Requirements Planning (DDMRP) assumes that an order is created when the stock level drops below a given level. The assessment of this level can be continuous or periodic. A periodic evaluation can force better repartition of the load over time. DDMRP characterizes the demand for a product by its average daily demand. This aggregation specifies neither the average size of the elementary demands nor the average duration between two elementary demands. Based on a discrete event simulation model, this study suggests that, at least for a flow-shop organization, the DDMRP method, with continuous order generation, is suitable for large mean time between elementary orders, while periodic observation improves the method for small values of it. Demand-Driven Material Requirements Planning (DDMRP) is a recent inventory management method that has generated considerable interest in both academia and industry. Many recent papers have demonstrated the superiority of DDMRP over classical methods like MRP or Kanban, an observation confirmed by companies that have implemented DDMRP. However, DDMRP depends on many parameters that affect its performance. Only general rules are given by the authors of the method to fix these parameters but no algorithm. The present paper aims to fill this gap by proposing a multi-objective optimisation algorithm to fix a set of eight identified parameters. The suggested genetic algorithm is coupled with a simulation algorithm that computes the objective functions. Two opposing objective functions are considered: first, the maximisation of orders delivered on-time to the customer and, second, the minimisation of on-hand inventory. The geographical dispersion of collaborative factories can provide cost-saving potential for manufacturers and lead them to easier fit the global markets. On the other hand, in such networks of factories, coordination is especially important for the just-in-time delivery of orders. This study investigates a new configuration of factories in a network of collaborative manufacturing. In the first stage, some independent suppliers produce and deliver the different components of the final products to the assembly factory. Each supplier can produce a particular component of a final product. In the assembly factory, the final products are assembled. The objective is to determine the optimal schedule of the jobs in each factory to minimize the sum of earliness and tardiness. A mixed-integer formulation for this problem is proposed, which can find the optimal solution for the small-size instances. The iterated local search methods are also developed to cope with larger instances. Purpose: The unstable labor productivity and periodic planning method cause barriers to improving construction logistics management. This paper aims to explore a demand-driven mechanism for efficient construction logistics planning to record the material consumption, report the real-time demand and trigger material replenishment from off-site to on-site, which is aided by Building Information Modeling (BIM) and the Kanban technique. Design/methodology/approach: This paper follows the design science research (DSR) principles to propose a system of designing and applying Kanban batch with 4D BIM for construction logistics planning and monitoring. Prototype development with comparative simulation experiments of a river remediation project is conducted to analyze the conventional and Kanban-triggered supply. Two-staged industrial interviews are conducted to guide and evaluate the system design. Findings: The proposed BIM-enabled Kanban system enables construction managers and suppliers to better set integrated on- and off-site targets, report real-time demands and conduct collaborative planning and monitoring. The simulation results present significant site storage and schedule savings applying the BIM-enabled Kanban system. Feedback and constructive suggestions from practitioners are collected via interviews and analyzed for further development. Originality/value: This paper brings to the limelight the benefits of implementing BIM-enabled demand-driven replenishment to remove waste from the material flow. This article presents a case study on improving process efficiency in a mining equipment part fabrication company. The company was facing issues concerning communication, organisation, and workflow processes. This study investigated that ineffective communication among departments was the major weakness which was responsible for the long lead or idle time. This lead time was a waste that affected the company’s productivity. A great amount of time was spent on non-value-added processes. The Kanban Centralised Communication System was implemented. Time study and value stream mapping were also used. A significant improvement in process efficiency from 34% to 85% was achieved by reducing lead time from 4200 minutes to 1680 minutes after streamlining the communication in the company using Kanban. Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a key tool in Lean Manufacturing (LM) that helps identify opportunities for process improvement. This research aims to propose an integrated method using LM tools (such as Kanban, VSM, Pareto chart, and Supplier Input Process Output Customer) and Arena simulation to improve the productivity of the production line through reducing lead time, inventory time, including Raw Material (RM) time and Work In Progress (WIP) time and enhancing Process Cycle Efficiency (PCE) ratio. To begin the process, a Pareto chart is employed to identify the main product of the organization. Subsequently, a current VSM is constructed to identify any waste in the production line. The Kanban tool is then used to propose appropriate remedies to improve the manufacturing process. To validate the efficiency of the production capacity in future VSM, Arena simulation is executed by determining Takt Time. Lastly, a future VSM is formulated based on the suggested improvements, and an appraisal is conducted to provide recommendations for prospective enhancements. A real case study of a furniture company in Vietnam is performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results reveal impressive benefits, including a 92% reduction in lead time and a corresponding 92% increase in PCE. Additionally, there is a substantial reduction of around 90% in WIP time, while RM time is completely eliminated, resulting in a 100% reduction. Featured Application: The methodology described in this paper was implemented in an automotive manufacturing facility that operates under a just-in-time manufacturing scheme. The methodology greatly improved the efficiency of day-to-day operations at the facility. This study addresses sustainability challenges in automotive packaging by introducing a novel data-driven approach to audit and improve packaging quality. Traditional manual auditing processes are both time-consuming and prone to errors. To counter these inefficiencies, we developed an automated system utilizing Microsoft Power Apps and SQL databases to streamline data collection and processing. The automated tools facilitate real-time data capture and visualization through Microsoft Power BI, enabling precise tracking and management of returnable and expendable packaging materials. Our results show that our approach offers a significant enhancement in the accuracy and speed of data analysis, leading to more informed decision-making. Our methodology supports sustainability by reducing waste and reliance on expendable packaging and improving the economic and operational efficiency of automotive packaging systems. Material management is a critical component of any organization, as it encompasses the efficient and effective handling of materials throughout the entire supply chain process. Just-in-time (JIT) strategies play a vital role in streamlining the supply chain process and minimizing waste. The paper examines the optimization of JIT production management, quality, and maintenance planning in the context of material management. An integrated model is proposed based on optimal control theory to formulate a set of innovative systems dynamics that consider quality decline in a stochastic context. The model also includes random demand fluctuations through a stochastic diffusion process. The objective of the model is to enhance company competitiveness by satisfying a service level constraint and jointly optimizing the JIT production and maintenance control parameters to minimize inventory levels and reduce the total cost. The findings reveal significant interactions between costs and control parameters of both JIT production and maintenance strategies due to their close relationship, leading to the conclusion that the development of an integrative model is more cost-efficient than managing them independently. A comparative analysis further enhances the study by highlighting the potential cost savings in implementing the suggested collaborative control strategy. Overall, the paper contributes to the literature on material management by addressing the research gap in the optimization of JIT production management, quality, and maintenance planning under a stochastic context. Over the last decade, our world exposed to many types of unpredictable disasters (recently Coronavirus). These disasters have clearly shown the uncertainty and vulnerability of supply chain systems. Also, it confirmed that adopting Just-in-Time (JIT) strategy to reduce the logistic chain cost may lead to inbuilt complexity and risks. Efficient tools are therefore needed to make complexity optimized supply chain decisions. Evolutionary algorithms, including genetic algorithms (GA), have proven effective in identifying optimal solutions that address the trade-offs between total supply chain cost and carbon emissions regulatory policy represented by carbon tax charges. These solutions pertain to the design challenges of supply networks exposed to potential disruption risks. However, GA have a set of parameters must be chosen for effective and robust performance of the algorithms. This paper aims to set the most suitable values of these parameters that used via GA – ased optimization cost and risk reduction model in firms using a JIT as a delivery system. The model has been conceptualized for addressing the design complexities of the supply chain, referred to as SCRRJITS (Simultaneous Cost and Risk Reduction in a Just-in-Time System). A complete analysis of the different parameters and operators of the algorithm is carried out using design of experiments approach. The algorithm performance measure used in this study is convergence of solutions. Industry 4.0 technologies, such as artificial intelligence, the internet of things and 3D printing are aiding the manufacturers by complementing their skilled workforce and transforming the way factories are run. This paper studies an integrated production and transportation scheduling problem in the context of the spare parts supply chain by integrating 3D printing with JIT delivery systems. This work aims to find a synchronised production and distribution schedule that minimises the weighted sum of delivery times and transportation costs. Based on the characteristics of the problem, we propose a new set-covering formulation. An enhanced branch-and-price algorithm is designed to solve the problem instances to optimality. To expedite the column generation process, two acceleration strategies are also used. The computational results are in favour of the proposed algorithm and the acceleration strategies. Further, the results indicate that integrating the production and transportation scheduling decisions leads to an average savings of about 16.27% of the total costs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multi-stage assembly systems where the demand for components depends on the market-driven demand for end products, are commonly encountered in practice. Production Planning and Control (PPC) systems for this production context include Kanban, Materials Requirement Planning (MRP), Optimised Production Technology (OPT), and Demand Driven MRP (DDMRP). All four of these PPC systems are widely applied in practice and literature abounds on each of these systems. Yet, studies comparing these systems are scarce and remain largely inconclusive. In response, this study uses simulation to assess the performance of all four PPC systems under different levels of bottleneck severity and due date tightness. Results show that MRP performs the worst, which can be explained by the enforcement of production start dates. Meanwhile, Kanban and DDMRP perform the best if there is no bottleneck. If there is a bottleneck then DDMRP and OPT perform the best, with DDMRP realising lower inventory levels. If there is a severe bottleneck, then the performance results for DDMRP and OPT converge. This identification of contingency factors not only resolves some of the inconsistencies in the literature but also has important implications for the applicability of these four PPC systems in practice. This study introduces a novel e-voting system utilizing blockchain technology to address the challenges inherent to traditional voting methods. Traditional systems often suffer from inaccuracies, susceptibility to manipulation, and elevated costs. Conversely, while e-voting shows potential, issues related to transparency and security have curbed its full adoption. Our research overcomes these hurdles by integrating a system developed through the Kanban methodology, with the blockchain serving as the central repository for all election data. This approach boosts transparency and security, using public-private key pairs for each transaction, and simplifying blockchain access. Organizers initiate elections and define eligible voters; this data is then securely moved to the Ethereum blockchain. Voters can effortlessly use the system, casting votes and accessing real-time, unalterable results. Various communication protocols ensure system stability, with simulated cyberattacks showcasing its security. After exhaustive testing and refinement, areas for further enhancement have been identified. This innovative system offers unmatched transparency and trust in the voting process, marking a considerable leap for trustworthy elections, especially in small to medium-sized settings. The study examines the role of lean manufacturing principles of Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED) and Kanban in augmenting productivity through metrics of reduction in inventory, changeover time and units produced per lot. The paper uses case study-based approach to examine the significant effects of SMED and Kanban on an emblem manufacturing setup. Primary data pertaining to emblem produced in maximum quantity was gathered. The data collection process involved identifying internal and external activities during injection molding process. Analysis of the data revealed which of the activities can be removed and which can be standardized in order to reduce setup time. The results showed that SMED method facilitated a reduction of 53% in setup time. Significantly, the method saved about 25 min in setup time per batch, leading to a total saving of 750 min per month. In addition, metrics of number of units produced daily and work-in-process inventory showed marked improvements, as the results showed a reduction by 25% and 50% respectively. The application and recording of beneficial outcomes of both SMED and Kanban in an automotive parts manufacturing company, which forms a vital link in the entire supply chain, makes the contribution of this study novel. Companies in the construction sector need effective information management. In particular, the transmission of information within a company is key to improving its management and competitiveness. Currently, many companies in the construction sector are making a great effort to implement the building information modelling (BIM) methodology. Such implementation requires collaborative work through the Cloud between the different agents in the construction process of any project. In fact, information management in BIM projects is related to the creation, storage, transfer and efficient application of information within a three-dimensional (3D) virtual model of the project. The size of the project also determines the optimal management approach. The main problems resulting from poor information management may be a lack of coordination between actors, loss of information or misinterpretation of information. This work has two stated objectives. The first objective is to carry out a literature review of the applications of BIM technology and the importance of managing knowledge according to International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO)- 19650. The second objective is to propose a disruptive method based on the Kanban tool to properly manage BIM information in the design and construction phases. This study presents the development of an upgrading program for a supermarket-type warehouse that supports the supply of goods in a manufacturing company located in northwestern Mexico. The tool Kanban is applied to achieve and improve the redistribution, reorganization, and identification of replenishment points for the production process. A five-step methodology is followed and 70 materials are selected to update their storage and inventory levels on the warehouse management system. The results show an increase of 33.53% on overall delivery metric compliance and a 5.49% increment on supermarket maximization. It is concluded that upgrading the warehouse management system improves the efficiency of materials supply since it increments successful on-time delivery objetives and since it increments the supermarket's share on supply. In this research, a dynamic optimization of milk-run system (MRS) managed with an IT-based Kanban (ITK) is performed. The main tasks are to i) explore how artificial intelligence may allow MRS to choose the most efficient path and ii) measure the impact on the main production parameters. The study explores the Kanban signals activating an ant colony optimization algorithm that finds the best path from supermarket to the lines. Then, genetic algorithm solves an objective function to find the optimal delivery times according to the paths found. The optimal path is dynamically found for each MRS supply cycle. Within the empirical results, significant improvements for production parameters and overall system performance have been appraised. The lead time and material handling time show a strong decrease to 39% and 48%, respectively, while work in process decreases of 22% for all assembly lines. Rolling Kanban is the name of a kanban management methodology for batch processes manufacturing environment. Proposed in the early 2000s by FESTO Consulting, for two decades we have lost knowledge both from operative and scientific point of view. Basically, Rolling Kanban means a visual planning methodology based on the production of product-families and variants where: (i) set-up times are reduced between the products of the same family, and (ii) relevant times (dozens of minutes if not even hours) must be considered for changeover between products of different families. In addition, the cyclic production sequence between different product families cannot be maintained. Considering that very few technical information and documents are available about this approach, the main objective of this paper is to retrieve and present, for the first time to the scientific community, the Rolling Kanban methodology. Besides, a real industrial implementation concerning a manufacturer of domestic fittings is discussed as a case study. More specifically, two novel versions of the original Rolling Kanban technique are fully presented to effectively overcome certain limits and criticalities found during its operative use, such as the difficulty to realise a pull production, considering increased set-up time for changeover between products of different families. Online learning has become increasingly commonplace, including the replacement and augmentation of traditional in-residence education, as well as ad-hoc training systems and just-in-time knowledge dissemination. However, design for instructional media to facilitate performance has relied on an inadequate understanding of the behavioral affect elicited from these designs. To investigate the degree to which excitement and engagement are predictive of individual learning outcomes in an online learning setting, we evaluate an experiment with two instructional representations (static and dynamic) using learning materials for a semaphore signaling system. We examine the excitement and engagement levels of the participants using electroencephalography (EEG) as potential mediators. Learning outcomes are measured by the evaluation scores of knowledge retention. We consider several structural equation models (SEMs) to see the underlying relationship between instructional representation, excitement, engagement, and learning outcomes. Notably, the models indicate the full mediation of behavioral affect on learning outcomes, in which both the range of excitement and the maximum level of engagement are mediating effects. This article illustrates the potential for biometrically measured affect aid in the modeling and understanding of how instructional design features ultimately impact performance. Drug shortages make it difficult or impossible to meet the therapeutic needs of individual patients or populations. In the first part of this review we proposed an operational definition that incorporates the processes by which products are manufactured, the causes of shortages and stock‐outs (local shortages), and the contributory factors. Here we discuss causes and possible solutions. Drug shortages have complex causes, and a single cause cannot always be identified. Reasons include lack or shortage of raw materials, manufacturing difficulties, regulatory and political actions, voluntary recalls, just‐in‐time inventory systems, halts in production for financial or other business reasons, low demand (eg, orphan products, reduced usage), mergers, market shifts (eg, diversion to home markets) and unexpected increases in demand (eg, improved diagnosis, new trial information, epidemics and pandemics, inappropriate use, off‐label use). Potential solutions are as diverse as the potential causes. Prevention is hard, because shortages are not easily predicted. Everyone in the supply chain is involved in anticipating and managing shortages, with responsibilities for preventing them or at least trying to mitigate their effects. This includes manufacturers and suppliers, particularly of generic formulations, pharmacists, prescribers, patients and governments. Background: The implementation of the Lean Hospitals concept can contribute to the improvement of internal processes in healthcare organizations. The level of a management team's knowledge is an important part of effective implementation of Lean Hospital elements in hospitals. The purpose of this article is to determine the degree of theoretical and practical knowledge of Lean Hospitals (defined for the purposes of the study as a set of lean tools) among the management teams of Polish hospitals. The authors focused on examining the discrepancy between practical and theoretical knowledge to determine which of them is less prevalent in hospitals in order to correctly establish elements of the implementation procedures, which must be improved and perfected to more effectively implement the lean concept in healthcare. Methods: The research methods used to achieve the study objectives included, respectively, an analysis of the literature on the subject and gathering of data using the Qualtrics Platform with a CAWI survey. Respondents rated their level of knowledge regarding Lean Hospital tools on a Likert scale. Basic descriptive statistics and radar diagrams were used to analyze and present the data. Statistical analysis was performed using Excel spreadsheets. Results: It was established that the vast majority of management teams in the studied hospitals had limited basic knowledge about Lean Hospitals, if any. The greatest lack of knowledge was found in the field of practical (implementation) knowledge of Lean Hospital tools. The research found no significant discrepancy between the level of theoretical and practical knowledge at the level of general knowledge and detailed knowledge relating to the knowledge of individual lean tools. The standardized work tool was rated best in terms of self-assessing practical knowledge. The worst rated tools in terms of both theoretical and practical knowledge self-assessment were Kaizen, Kanban and TPM. Conclusions: The results of the conducted studies indicate a low level of knowledge and advancement in the implementation of the Lean Hospitals concept in selected Polish hospitals. Limited knowledge of the Lean Hospital concept was established for entire management teams. A low level of knowledge was noted in both theoretical and practical knowledge. Supplementing knowledge only at the theoretical level without taking care of the practical knowledge aspect may prolong the implementation procedure or stop it completely. Therefore, based on the result of the research, it can be concluded that the first stage of lean implementation in hospitals should focus on supplementing the knowledge and preparing the employees for work in a lean culture, diverting particular attention to the practical part of the training. This article discusses the use of the Kanban project management tool Trello to facilitate self-paced introductory onboarding and training for student assistants and new staff beginning work in the Technical Services department at the University of Southern Mississippi. An introduction to Kanban and how it can work in a training context, the planning and organization of training modules using Trello, and refinements made along the way are discussed, along with recommended best practices for using Kanban training in any area of the library. This paper integrates agile methodologies in organisations and relates them to emotional intelligence. Through a programme consisting of ten sessions, the Kanban method is used to develop emotional competencies. The programme is developed, and the competencies that make up emotional intelligence, previously defined in a dictionary of competencies, are measured. Through the programme, the methodology is applied to a total of 300 employees of a leading company in the outsourcing sector in Spain. There is a control group that has not undergone the proposed programme in order to compare the effectiveness of the training with those workers who have undergone it. A questionnaire composed of 32 variables was designed to measure eight emotional competencies that make up emotional intelligence, in order to ascertain the level of success acquired by the employee, before and after the programme. The results obtained show that, after the training, not only have most of the competencies improved, but also the need to promote an improvement in the working environment has been detected, which is one of the limitations found in this study. TPM is the foundation for JIT (Just in Time) and Lean Manufacturing and forms the basis of JIT or on-time delivery. The goal of TPM is to improve equipment effectiveness and optimize equipment performance, namely PQCDSM (Productivity, Quality, Cost and Delivery, Safety and health, environment, and Morale). Many producers have tried to transform their production system to a JIT or Lean production system with the aim of increasing productivity and quality, but thus far with little success. This contribution shows how trekking and climbing tours can be used to illustrate the application of PQCDSM-Logic in mountaineering and how this can be transferred to logistics and maintenance practice. The background is the author's decades of experience with expeditions, trekking and climbing tours, TPM implementations and interviews with numerous experts. There are many similarities between the application of PQCDSM-Logic in mountaineering and in logistics and maintenance practice, which will help both in operational practice in industry and in high mountain tours, especially regarding safety in a changing environment. Presented is the extrapolation from mountain climbing to TPM and the importance of leadership for a successful (summit climbs and the like) transformation of the production system to a JIT or Lean production system. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Ukraine–Russian conflict, both significant geo-political and socio-economic shocks to the global food system and food insecurity has risen across the world. One potential remedy to reduce the level of food insecurity is to move from a lean just-in-time food system to one where there is more resilience through greater agility both in routine supply operations and also in the event of an emergency situation. The aim of this critical perspectives paper was to firstly reflect on the concepts of lean, agility, and 'leagility'. Then, this study considered the ability of individual organisations and the whole food system to be resilient, adaptive, enable the elimination of waste, reduce inefficiency, and assure the consistent delivery to market requirements in terms of both volume, safety, and quality. Promoting the concept of leagility together with advocating resilient, sustainable practices that embed buffer and adaptive capacity, this paper positions that increasing digitalisation and improving business continuity planning can ensure effective operationalisation of supply chains under both normal and crisis situations, ultimately reducing the risk of food insecurity at personal, household, and community levels. The turnaround of the wheels of the economy has an important meaning in terms of accelerating development in Indonesia. This industrial sector not only has the potential to make a large economic contribution through added value, employment and foreign exchange, but also is able to make a major contribution in the cultural transformation of the nation towards modernizing people's lives that support the formation of national competitiveness. This study aims to test the influence of just in time, green supply chain management, and competitive advantage on company performance in SMEs in Indonesia. This study used a quantitative approach with a data collection method using a 1-5 Likert scale questionnaire which was distributed online and processed using SPSS version 25 software. The population and sample of this study are 175 SMEs in Indonesia which are engaged in the manufacturing sector. As for testing the model in this study using the Structural Equation Model Partial Least Square (SEM PLS). The results of this study provide the fact that the just-in-time system, green supply chain management, and competitive advantage have a significant positive effect on the performance of SMEs companies in Indonesia, both directly and indirectly. Recommendations that can be given to the company are to maintain the just-in-item system that has been carried out such as managing production costs, maintaining production levels, and providing good relations to suppliers. The aims of this research are, first to determine the stock profile of medical consumables before and after the implementation of Kanban system, and second to analysis the effectiveness inventory management of Kanban application. The research method uses descriptive quantitative by comparing the preexperimental and post-experimental averages. An experiment was conducted to apply the Kanban system to pharmaceutical logistics at a hospital in Ponorogo for two months. Analysis using the FSN method based on TOR, ROP method, Safety Stock method followed by the implementation of the Kanban system. The results obtained are the average pre-Kanban purchase is 6715.7 and post-Kanban is 2232.8. The average ending inventory before Kanban is 8638.6 and after Kanban is 1656.2. The results of the paired t test yield a significant value for purchases of 0.168, which means that there are significant differences in pre-Kanban and post-Kanban purchases. The percentage of effectiveness tested with an N Gain score of 49.362% for purchases and for final stock of 47.655% shows that it is still in the less effective category. The benefit of this research is that in theory it provides an overview of the method for testing the effectiveness of kanban implementation, in practice it provides an overview of Kanban implementation.
