1. Measurement of the Permanent Electric Dipole Moment of the $^{129}$Xe Atom

Abstract

We report on a new measurement of the CP-violating permanent Electric Dipole Moment (EDM) of the neutral $^{129}$Xe atom. Our experimental approach is based on the detection of the free precession of co-located nuclear spin-polarized $^3$He and $^{129}$Xe samples. The EDM measurement sensitivity benefits strongly from long spin coherence times of several hours achieved in diluted gases and homogeneous weak magnetic fields of about 400~nT. A finite EDM is indicated by a change in the precession frequency, as an electric field is periodically reversed with respect to the magnetic guiding field. Our result, $\left(-4.7\pm6.4\right)\cdot 10^{-28}$ ecm, is consistent with zero and is used to place a new upper limit on the $^{129}$Xe EDM: $|d_\text{Xe}|<1.5 \cdot 10^{-27}$ ecm (95% C.L.). We also discuss the implications of this result for various CP-violating observables as they relate to theories of physics beyond the standard model.

Abstract

We report on precise measurements of magnetic field gradients extracted from transverse relaxation rates of precessing spin samples. The experimental approach is based on the free precession of gaseous, nuclear spin polarized $^3$He and $^{129}$Xe atoms in a spherical cell inside a magnetic guiding field of about 400 nT using LT$_C$ SQUIDs as low-noise magnetic flux detectors. The transverse relaxation rates of both spin species are simultaneously monitored as magnetic field gradients are varied. For transverse relaxation times reaching 100 h, the residual longitudinal field gradient across the spin sample could be deduced to be$|\vec{\nabla}B_z|=(5.6 \pm 0.4)$ pT/cm. The method takes advantage of the high signal-to-noise ratio with which the decaying spin precession signal can be monitored that finally leads to the exceptional accuracy to determine magnetic field gradients at the sub pT/cm scale.

Abstract

A new method to determine the spin tune is described and tested. In an ideal planar magnetic ring, the spin tune - defined as the number of spin precessions per turn - is given by $\nu_s = \gamma G$ (gamma is the Lorentz factor, $G$ the magnetic anomaly). For 970 MeV/c deuterons coherently precessing with a frequency of ~120 kHz in the Cooler Synchrotron COSY, the spin tune is deduced from the up-down asymmetry of deuteron carbon scattering. In a time interval of 2.6 s, the spin tune was determined with a precision of the order $10^{-8}$, and to $1 \cdot 10^{-10}$ for a continuous 100 s accelerator cycle. This renders the presented method a new precision tool for accelerator physics: controlling the spin motion of particles to high precision is mandatory, in particular, for the measurement of electric dipole moments of charged particles in a storage ring., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

The influence of the superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) gradiometer baseline on the recording of magnetocardiographic measurements is analyzed. By using a first order gradiometer with an ultralong baseline of 18cm, a successful measurement of the heart signal of a fetus in real time is achieved.

Abstract

High-temperature superconducting direct current-Superconducting Quantum Interference Devise (HTS dc-SQUID) sensors and flip-chip magnetometers with quasiplanar Josephson junctions were developed using a high-oxygen pressure dc-sputtering technique. The fabricated dc-SQUID sensors and magnetometers were observed to operate in high magnetic fields without suppression of the critical current.

Abstract

A radio frequency bias current scheme with reversal frequency up to 50 MHz for direct current (dc) superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) was developed. The design provides the possibility to reduce the l/f noise for high temperature superconducting dc SQUIDs in a large frequency range. The noise measurements reveal the same reduction of l/f noise as conventional bias reversal electronics in the case beta is less than or equal to 1 but not when beta is greater than 1.

Abstract

Research was conducted to examine an automated system for aircraft rim inspection using a high temperature superconducting radio frequency superconducting quantum interference device gradiometer cooled by a Joule-Thomson cryocooler. The whole SQUID system was mounted on a robot and integrated in an automated wheel testing system. Tests were performed on aircraft wheels with known flaws. Results based on a comparison with a conventional measurement revealed that with the use of SQUID, smaller flaws are identifiable than with induction coils sensors.

Magnetometer and gradiometer Josephson junctions, crossovers and vias were successfully fabricated using nonaqueous Br-ethanol chemical etching. PrBa2Cu3O7-x thin films were employed as flux transformer junction insulation and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) junction barrier layers. Small inductance direct current SQUIDs were utilized for nondestructive evaluation applications requiring a high dynamic range.

Abstract

A hight temperature superconducting single-layer planar radio frequency double-hole gradiometer with small washer areas and a baseline length of up to 55 mm was developed. A gradient field resolution was measured at 1 pT above 10 Hz in unshielded environment. The superconducting quantum interference device system was used effectively for two-dimensional eddy-current nondestructive evaluation measurements.

Abstract

A novel portable nitrogen cryostat design for moving high temperature superconducting quantum interference device operation is proposed. The resulting cryostat was able to function as a portable system for seven hours without refilling its reservoir with a mixture of gaseous and liquid nitrogen. The efficient operation of the cryostat as a moving magnetometer was demonstrated in an unshielded laboratory environment.

A high-temperature superconducting quantum interference device gradiometer using rotating magnetic fields was proposed for eddy-current nondestructive material evaluation. The device was developed to avoid the additional noise sources often found in scanning measurements. The approach has potential applications in radially oriented defect and ferromagnetically contaminated sample evaluation.

Abstract

An eddy current system in conjunction with a high temperature superconductor superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) gradiometer was developed for detecting structural flaws in aircrafts. A KC 100 commercial Joule-Thomson cryocooler was used with the SQUID. Orientation independent noise spectra was observed in both shielded and unshielded environments. The improved integration approach resulted in significant reductions in motion-related noise.

International audience; We observe a deuteron beam polarization lifetime near 1000 s in the horizontal plane of a magnetic storage ring (COSY). This long spin coherence time is maintained through a combination of beam bunching, electron cooling, sextupole field corrections, and the suppression of collective effects through beam current limits. This record lifetime is required for a storage ring search for an intrinsic electric dipole moment on the deuteron at a statistical sensitivity level approaching 10−29 e cm.

Abstract

Die frühzeitige Identifizierung pathogenen Befalls bei Kulturpflanzen ist für Landwirte von großer Bedeutung. Derzeit existieren keine Schnelltests, die in ihrer Sensitivität vergleichbar mit einer aufwändigen Laboruntersuchung sind. Das hier vorgestellte Detektionsprinzip ermöglicht es dem Landwirt die Untersuchung seiner Pflanzen vor Ort selbst durchzuführen. Mittels magnetischer Immunofiltration und mit Hilfe eines tragbaren Lesegerätes gelingt die zuverlässige Pathogendetektion innerhalb weniger Minuten.
