The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) initiative for K-12 education has been adopted by 45 states and will have a broad impact on American education al institutions, including libraries. The CCSS focus on close reading of informational texts, inquiry learning, and college and career readiness with an emphasis on assessment and accountability. This research study used a focusgroup approach to provide a framework for asking school librarians from two states about the future of teaching and learning and th e types of challenges they envision for the future. What value can academic and research libraries contribute to the campus culture for learning? How can these value contributions be measured? This paper offers the campus culture for learning as a new frame of reference for measuring the library's contribution to learning. To better understand health information provision in the public library setting, two cooperative library systems that serve primarily rural populations in upstate New York were studied. The central library in one of those systems established a consumer health information center (CHIC) in 1999. In the other system, the central library does not have such a center. Visits were made to ten randomly selected libraries in each of the two systems (n = 20), and the query "Do vaccines cause autism?" was posed to library staff. Print resources were provided more often than online resources in both systems. Utilization of the CHIC as a health information resource was inconsistent among libraries. Follow-up phone interviews found none of the twenty libraries had reference policies. Reported practice matched actual practice 60 percent of the time in the system without the CHIC and 40 percent of the time in the system with the CHIC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Motivated by mixed evidence on the effectiveness of reading companions on children's reading performance, as well as the clear and present need for libraries to conduct literacy education, this study sought to investigate the feasibility of using social robots in library literacy activities and to extract the essential functions of effective reading companions by comparing human and robot co‐readers. A humanoid robot, Robot Julia, was developed as a social robot to provide oral conversation and offer children tactful and stimulating support for their reading. An experimental study was conducted to examine child patrons' perceptions and performance in reading activities with the robot companion as compared to human companions. A total of 36 elementary school children participated in the study. The results positively supported that the participants perceived the robot companion as more favourable and desirable to read with than a human co‐reader. The children favoured robotic verbalisation over human verbalisation. According to the results of the comparison, cognitively it was found that human and robot companions facilitated children's reading comprehension in different ways and that the children performed similarly well with both kinds of reading companions. Affectively, the robot co‐reader induced more social interaction during the reading sessions. Despite all the positive aspects, it is also necessary to consider the limitations including the novelty effect of the approach. This study contributes empirical evidence in the pragmatic field of library science and expands upon social robot research by exploring one‐on‐one child–robot interactions in reading, as opposed to the group contexts in previous studies. During the past decade we have noted a marked increase in the use of special collections materials in the university classroom. This presents the library with an opportunity to assert its role as a unique and irreplaceable contributor to the University's core mission. Asserting this is predicated on the assumption that an instructor's goals will be met, that students will become successful researchers, and that library staff will survive the encounter. U.S. academic libraries have substantial resources to commit to advance the research and teaching and learning agendas of their institutions. In the aggregate, academic libraries annually have $2,000,000,000 in purchasing power for materials. However, the disproportionate increases in the costs of scholarly information continue to erode the ability of libraries to meet the information needs of their users. If academic libraries consolidated their purchasing power and pooled their resources, the results for higher education could be transformational. Academics and librarians have worked in tandem for many years to broaden access to the scholarship they create, scrutinize, collect, and consume. Recent developments have focused on campus faculty advocating for change by developing self-imposed open access policies. Such policy developments have occurred in an evolutionary process, the beginnings of which might be identified as the 'serials crisis' peaking in the 1990s, followed by the focus on efforts to examine and reform broken aspects of the system of scholarly communication, and most recently the feasibility of faculty-initiated open access policies on university campuses. This article provides an analysis of one university's 10- year evolution to an open access policy focusing primarily on its advocates' lessons learned and the library's role in order to add the perspective of a public institution's experience. The article discusses historic ties among libraries, archives and museums in an effort to illuminate the contemporary convergence of these resources. The question is explored whether such a convergence is a revival of something old or a new development. Focusing on museums and libraries as repositories of cultural artifacts, it explores archival records and examines two contemporary cases. It makes the case for the contemporary convergence being a revival of traditional shared history being redeveloped for the digital age. Sharing of physical and human resources, as well as uses of new technologies to enhance access and preservation, are discussed.

This article describes the genesis of Vanderbilt University's Peabody Academic Library Leadership Institute as an outcome of a particular philosophy. That philosophy is based on the concept that to fulfill their potential contributions, academic libraries need to direct their planning, resources, and services to support the priorities of their parent institutions. This article addresses the need for campus-focused leadership training; higher education leadership training for academic librarians; and the higher education context for libraries. It describes why Vanderbilt's Peabody College of Education and Human Development initiated a professional development institute for librarians. The first years of the 21st century have witnessed challenges to the traditional roles of libraries and librarians. Widespread access to information via search engines has permitted users to bypass libraries for more readily available resources whose quality, though still variable, increases steadily. Digitization initiatives, such as the Google Book Project and products by Gale and other publishers, have democratized and commercialized library holdings. As a result, libraries, particularly academic institutions, have found themselves marginalized: Two of their key roles—information gateway and the university's intellectual center—have been taken over by other sources. Yet the proliferation of learning management systems (LMS) provide an opportunity for academic libraries to dramatically increase their relevance to students and faculty by allowing them to integrate their resources—and their information literacy expertise—in a point-of-need model. With this has come the need to rethink the goals of the library and how it addresses its metrics for success. This presentation profiles coordination between libraries and LMSs being pioneered by a number of institutions. Librarians in community colleges have engaged in information literacy (IL) for decades, but their theorizing of IL has never taken equity as a starting point. This article asserts that IL theory radiating from equity requires the animating dynamics that conceptual advances in literacy theory offer. By examining early moments in librarianship to understand librarians' relationship to equity and drawing on Jean-Luc Nancy's contrasting notions of globalisation (globalization, resulting in misery) and mondialisation (world forming, resulting in a just society) as a framework for reenvisioning IL, I identify new approaches to IL that are particularly well suited to producing more equitable educational outcomes for community college students. Synthesizing concepts from researchers who have applied new thinking about literacy to their conceptualizations about information literacy, I celebrate approaches to IL in which students, critically engaged in creating meaning, are positioned as producers of information. This study investigates user preferences for reference and technical support, services, and facilities featured in an academic library and Learning Commons through a 23-item questionnaire distributed to building entrants during one 24-hour period on March 14, 2006. Academic libraries in Japan are well resourced by international standards, and support Japan's internationally recognized research capability well, but there are also ways in which they reflect Japan's strong bureaucratic culture. Recent changes to the status of national university libraries have seen a new interest in customer service, and service quality development. Potential changes in education for librarianship and an organisational focus on staff training and development are likely to enhance service delivery in Japanese academic libraries. As public libraries are becoming e-government access points relied on by both patrons and government agencies, it is important for libraries to consider the implications of these roles. While providing e-government access serves to reinforce the tremendously important role of public libraries in the United States social infrastructure, it also creates new demands on libraries and opens up significant new opportunities. Drawing upon several different strands of research, this paper examines the nexus of public libraries, values, trust, and e-government,focusing on the ways in which the values of librarianship and the trust that communities place in their public libraries reinforce the role of public libraries in the provision of e-government. The unique values embraced by public libraries have not only shaped the missions of libraries, they have influenced popular opinion surrounding public libraries and fostered the confidence that communities place in them as a source. of trusted information and assistance in finding information. As public libraries have embraced the provision of Internet access, these values and trust have become intertwined with their new social role as a public access point for e-government both in normal information activities and in the most extreme circumstances. The article focuses on the Electronic-Measures Project in 2003 funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England. The project attempted to establish a reliable set of electronic resource measures for inclusion in the Society of College, National, and University Libraries Annual Statistics alongside traditional library usage measures. From this project it became clear that statistical measures can make an important contribution to evaluating the impact of electronic services on the libraries.

A growing number of institutions are offering courses and degrees via distance education; however, distance education librarian- ship is a relatively new and often less defined field of librarianship. This paper will present the results of a survey to discover career paths leading to distance education librarianship. Based on a survey of subscribers to the OFFCAMP listserv, it asked questions such as: Is there a "typical" career path? Does previous or continuing work in other library units benefit a distance education librarian? What are the most important qualifications for a distance education librarian? Profiles of the education and experience of distance education librarians were analyzed for cornmonalities. The study concluded that distance education librarians come to their positions from a variety of experience, not always in libraries, but predominantly from library public service departments. Central Michigan University has hosted 11 Off-Campus Library Services Conferences since 1982. This paper studies the proceedings of the 11 conferences to identify patterns of research. The authors were interested in determining how the field of distance learning library services has changed over that 22 year period as evidenced by the topics presented and the types of papers included in the proceedings. The authors analyzed the contributed papers and assigned those papers to specific subject tracks. The authors also considered the sources used by the presenters in order to identify works that may be considered seminal in this field. Distance learning librarianship is a field that has grown and matured, but there has been little research to date into the core literature of the field. Literature in the field of distance learning librarianship tends to focus on the provision of asynchronous, Web-based bibliographic instruction and reference services. Experience has shown this author, however, that off-campus students attending classes at extension or satellite campuses appreciate, and benefit from, personal interaction with a librarian. Race remains poorly understood and inadequately represented in library and information science (LIS) education. Educators tend to avoid the term ‘race’, preferring the more inclusive ‘multiculturalism’. Yet these terms are far from equivalent: the various dimensions of multiculturalism, including race, ethnicity, class, and gender, have different histories and different theoretical explanations. Four models dominate LIS research and teaching: science/technology, business/management, mission/service, and society/culture. Each has left its own racialized legacy, invisibly influencing the field's current concepts of race. Drawing on recent research into ‘whiteness’ and racial formation, I show that although each model transmits an inheritance that perpetuates white privilege, each also carries the potential for positive transformation. Arguing that courses in all four areas have the capability to foreground race, the article outlines ways in which faculty, students, and library practitioners together can make curricular changes that contribute to the creation of libraries as ‘nonwhite’ or ‘race-neutral’ spaces. Over 500 libraries have employed OCLC's iCAS and its successor Automated Collection Assessment and Analysis Services (ACAS) as bibliometric tools to evaluate monograph collections. This examination of ACAS reveals both its methodological limitations and its feasibility as an indicator of collecting patterns. The article presents information related to academic libraries in the U.S. It is reported that convergence of media into increasingly smaller portable appliances have revolutionized American culture and hence library systems in the U.S. Rapidly changing technological innovations have brought many changes in academic libraries. Online information resources and other non-library Web sites are incorporated into the library science to give a new dimension to it. The process of digitization liberates the American library system, which in turn improved library resources. According to the article, the digital marketplace of knowledge needs library organizations that can add value to the system. The creation of library-centric bibliographic records, maintenance, and organization of the vast number of indexes and abstracts explain to the user of how this static information universe works. Librarians in the U.S. reveal that their institutions and collections enjoy an institutional right that shelters them from the economic consequences of free and open access of their collections.

This paper examines the characteristics and variety of digitization training initiatives in North America and to a lesser extent, Europe, and the growing development of credit-bearing courses and programs within higher education relating to digitization, with a specific focus on librarianship. Information was collected in response to an inquiry posted in late July 2004 on the ARLIS, JESSE, and DIGLIB listservs, supplemented by ongoing perusal of these sources, Web searches, and suggestions from colleagues. It also briefly discusses the benefits and challenges associated with the development of digitized library resources, and the need for greater attention to professional development for those working in digitization. This article assesses both the extent of students' use of open Web resources and library subscription databases and professors' satisfaction with that use as reported by a survey of 120 community college and university English faculty. It was concluded that although library budgets allocate significant funds to offer subscription databases, students often use Web resources that most faculty find acceptable at best, and often suspect. A qualitative study of a group of traditionally aged undergraduate students showed their reliance on content relevance and familiarity when making source selection decisions. Interviews with a small group of first-year university students assessed perceived self-efficacy in the domain of the ability to locate information in two different research contexts. The study paid particular attention to differences between female and male participant responses. Directions emerged for further research into the relationship between students' perceived self-efficacy with regard both to locating information and to constructing new knowledge. Many libraries are expending an increasing part of their collections budgets on electronic resources. At the same time many libraries, especially those which are state funded, face diminishing budgets and high rates of inflation for serials subscriptions in all formats, including electronic resources. Therefore, many libraries need to develop ways to evaluate and perhaps cancel, their subscription electronic resources, while still maintaining a viable research collection. The authors describe the quantitative decision grid evaluation process used at the University of Maryland at College Park Libraries to successfully complete a major electronic resources review and cancellation project. The present study investigated the validity of LibQUAL+™ scores, and specifically how total and subscale LibQUAL+™ scores are associated with self-reported, library-related satisfaction and outcomes scores. Participants included 88,664 students and faculty who completed the American English (n™ = 69,494) or the British English (nBE = 19,170) LibQUAL+™ language versions in the 2004 data collection cycle. This paper reviews how usability has been defined in the context of the digital library, what methods have been applied and their applicability, and proposes an evaluation model and a suite of instruments for evaluating usability for academic digital libraries. The model examines effectiveness, efficiency, satisfaction, and learn-ability. It is found that there exists an interlocking relationship among effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction. One of the newest statewide, academic library consortia, PALCI launched E-ZBorrow, a virtual union catalog, in 1999. Although only 35% of all eligible libraries participate, they serve 73% of the students, employ 66% of the faculty, and represent 66% of the total volumes among PA academic libraries. This article examines requests and loans during the first three years. Both are positively correlated with the size of the institution. Further examination indicates, however, that the Baccalaureate Colleges generated the most requests per user and had a greater demand placed on their collections. Librarians are seeing increasing numbers of distance students from other institutions using proximal library facilities for their research. Academic librarians were surveyed to learn more about their altitudes toward these unaffiliated distance students. The 107 responses to the survey found that, overall, academic librarians reflected a service attitude. Few expressed overtly hostile attitudes, but there were concerns about the strains unaffiliated distance students put on their libraries' resources and services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As distance education programs continue to grow, so do the services offered by libraries to the communities created by such programs. However, for these programs to be successful, the people that they are intended to serve need to be aware of the support and services available to them. Without such awareness, the services will go unused. Through a survey, the librarians at Emporia State University learned that making distant students aware of services was essential to the success of distance learning library services. Librarians discovered that creating a marketing plan to guide the marketing process was essential. This tool serves as a road map to visually illustrate the path from the conception of ideas to the realization of the marketing goals and objectives. A virtual reference service is likely to attract both on- campus and off-campus students and providing one service for all users can extend the hours of availability to all students. The needs of these two student populations may differ and oil-campus users may present some specific challenges to the reference staff. While some libraries do have a specified distance education librarian, it is unlikely at many institutions that there will be reference staff dedicated only to answering questions from oil-campus students. Reference services for off-campus students do present special issues about which general reference staff may not be aware. With awareness of these challenges and proper training, an existing virtual reference service can be extended (or improved) to help off-campus students, or a new chat service can be developed with the objective to assist all user groups with equal success. The Instructional and Information Support Services (IISS) division at North Seattle (Wash.)
