Voluntary drug intoxication is mainly due to drug overdose or the interaction of several drugs.

Titanate nanotubes (TiNTs) produced by the static hydrothermal process present a promising nanosystem for nanomedicine. However, the behavior of these nanotubes in vivo is not yet clarified. In this work, for the first time, we investigated the toxicity of these materials, their pharmacokinetic profile, and their biodistribution in mice. A high dose of TiNTs (45 mg/kg) was intravenously injected in mice and monitored from 6 h to 45 days. The histological examination of organs and the analysis of liver and kidney function markers and then the inflammatory response were in agreement with a long-term innocuity of these nanomaterials. The parameters of pharmacokinetics revealed the rapid clarification of TiNTs from the bloodstream after 6 h of the intravenous injection which then mainly accumulated in the liver and spleen, and their degradation and clearance in these tissues were relatively slow (>4 weeks). Interestingly, an important property of these materials is their slow dissolution under the lysosome acid environment, rendering them biodegradable. It is noteworthy that TiNTs were directly eliminated in urine and bile ducts without obvious toxicity in mice. Altogether, all these typical in vivo tests studying the TiNT pharmacokinetics, toxicity, and biodistribution are supporting the use of these biocompatible nanomaterials in the biomedical field, especially as a nanocarrier-based drug delivery system.

Oral lichen planus is a common manifestation in patients with lichen planus (LP). It can affect all regions of the oral mucosa. However, lip involvement is rarely described, especially in patients with actinic LP. We report a case of actinic LP associated with a pigmentation of the lower lip.

La fibromatose mammaire est une tumeur mammaire bénigne d´origine mésenchymateuse, elle représente 0.2% des tumeurs du sein. Cet article relate deux observations de fibromatose mammaire étayant ses particularités diagnostiques, morphologiques, thérapeutiques et évolutives. Dans les deux cas, la tumeur mime sur le plan clinique et radiologique un cancer. La confirmation diagnostique est obtenue par une preuve histologique. La fibromatose mammaire se caractérise par une évolution locale et une tendance à la récidive, d´où l´intérêt de l´exérèse chirurgicale avec marges saines obtenues chez nos patientes. La place des traitements locorégionaux (la radiothérapie et la cryothérapie) et des traitements médicaux, en particulier les anti-estrogènes n´est pas clairement définie. En conclusion, la fibromatose mammaire doit être connue puisqu´elle mime en tout point un cancer de sein et se caractérise par un taux de récidive très important sans jamais donner de métastases.

Flumequine (FLUM), a quinolone-derived antibiotic is one of the most prescribed drugs in aquaculture farms. However, its intensive use becomes worrisome because of its environmental risks and the emergence of FLUM-resistant bacteria. To overcome these problems we propose in this study the encapsulation and the delivery of FLUM by titanate nanotubes (TiNTs). Optimal FLUM loading was reached by suspending the dehydrated powder nanomaterials (FLUM : TiNTs ratio = 1 : 5) in ethanol. Introduction and importance Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare malignant neoplasm showing morphologic and immunohistochemical features of histiocytes. It is characterized typically by extranodal presentation and a poor clinical course, particularly in cases with disseminated disease. Case presentation This report documents a case of bifocal and aggressive HS in small bowel and lung revealed by acute peritonitis in a 63-year-old man. Clinical discussion Despite its rarity, we believe that the correct diagnosis of HS is crucial for clinical treatment and prognostic prediction. Introduction and importance The ossifying fibromyxoid tumor of soft tissue is a rare tumor of intermediate differentiation and uncertain lineage that occurs in adults mostly in the extremities and the trunk. Presentation of case we present a case of 57 year-old man presenting with a right scapular mass. It was a subcutaneous and painless mass that was largely excised. The diagnosis of ossifying fibromyxoid tumor of the right shoulder was made. The follow up of 1 year was without recurrence and metastasis. Clinical discussion The ossifying fibromyxoid tumor of soft tissue is exceptional, microscopic diagnosis and management is challenging, considering the scarcity of the tumor. Conclusion More cases and retrospective studies are needed to understand the pathogenesis and to determine optimal treatment regimens., Highlights • Clinical, gross and microscopic examinations of ossifying fibromyxoid tumor.

The present study delineates the effects of incorporation of 1% diallyl sulfide (DAS) into extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) on the physico‐chemical characteristics, in vitro antioxidant, and in vivo hepatoprotective properties in CCl4‐induced acute liver injury in mice. Results showed that the DAS‐rich EVOO exhibited good oxidative stability over one‐month storage and preserved its original quality‐related parameters including major components (oleic acid, linoleic acid, and palmitic acid), and minor components (tocopherols, chlorophylls and carotenoids, tyrosol, hydroxytyrosol, elenolic acid, oleuropein and its aglycone, pinoresinol, vanilic acid, cinnamic acid, ferulic acid, luteolin, apigenin, and sterols). Compared with EVOO or DAS, the DAS‐rich EVOO displayed the highest DPPH and ABTS‐radical scavenging activities and showed the strongest cellular antioxidant activity (CAA). In connection with its free radical scavenging activity and CAA, DAS‐rich EVOO significantly normalized the serum ALT and AST levels and prevented the increase in interleukin‐6 in CCl4‐intoxicated mice. The manifest anti‐inflammatory and hepatoprotective effects of DAS‐rich EVOO were further supported by liver histopathological examinations. Overall, the EVOO enrichment with DAS could open up opportunities for the development of novel functional food with improved antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties., The enrichment of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) with diallyl sulfide (DAS) improves its anti‐radical, ferric reducing power, and cellular antioxidant activities. Inverted papilloma is a rare nasosinusal tumor that mainly occurs in adults during the 5thdecade. The occurrence in children is exceptional and only few cases have been reported in the litterature. Clinical and radiological findings mimic other benign nasosinusal pathologies; therefore, diagnosis is based on histopathology either via biopsy or following surgical excision. Here we present a rare case of pediatric inverted papilloma in a 11-year-old child and we discuss clinical, radiological, therapeutic and evolutionary features through a literature review.

In the present study, the omega-3-rich oil from fish viscera and gill by-products, and caffeoylquinic-rich powder of artichoke bract by-products were used for the enrichment of wheat flour chips. Incorporation of these ingredients improved the lipid profile by increasing the level of polyunsaturated essential fatty acids mainly linoleic, linolenic, eicosapentaenoic, and docosahexaenoic acids enhancing thereby their nutritional quality. In alloxan-induced diabetic mice, the novel products reverts the blood glucose and serum markers including alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, urea, and creatinine to their normal levels. Concomitantly, they prevented lipid peroxidation and activated antioxidant enzymes (catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase). They ameliorate the lipid profile by reducing triglycerides, cholesterol, and LDL. Additional efforts aimed at investigating the potential of other raw materials including algal biomass, and shrimps as a sustainable source of valuable ingredients would contribute to the development of new products with improved nutritional and functional attributes. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Icorporation of cheap, available, and functional ingredients from fish (omega-3-rich oil) and artichoke bract by-products into wheat flour chips could be successfully adopted for the development of functional foods destined for diabetic patient.

Splenic cysts are infrequent and most of them are related to parasitic diseases. Splenic epithelial cyst (SEC) is the most common type of primary non-parasitic splenic cysts. Its pathogenesis is not yet clear. Splenic cysts are usually asymptomatic and are detected incidentally during imaging exams or an exploratory laparotomy.Our case is about a primary SEC discovered incidentally. An 18-year-old male patient without any personal and family medical history, presented with symptoms of upper urinary tract infection. Renal ultrasound was performed and found incidentally a solitary cystic lesion in the spleen. A laparoscopic partial splenectomy was made then. The specimen was sent for pathological examination and a diagnosis of primary (epidermoid) epithelial splenic cyst was given.SEC is a rare pathology that could mimic other splenic cysts like hydatid cyst. The preoperative diagnosis of SEC can be suspected by ultrasonography, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. However, histopathological examination is mandatory to confirm the diagnosis. A wide range of differential diagnoses is considered when we suspect clinically SEC because of its lower incidence.Actually, spleen-preserving surgery with minimally invasive methods such as laparoscopy is the gold standard for the treatment of SEC despite the risk of recurrence encountered with these techniques. However, different surgical modalities are discussed depending on the size and the location of the cyst and the patient's age.

Background Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has a devastatingly poor prognosis. Surgical resection is undertaken in only 20% of patients. Most of well-known prognostic factors reflect tumor stage more than its biology. So it is important to identify new biological indicators related to survival in order to develop new therapies. Objective To determine the relation between tumor budding and Epithelial Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) and to evaluate their impact on survival for patients after resection of PDAC. Methods We herein report a retrospective study of 50 patients with resected PDAC. Tumor budding, immunohistochemical expression of vimentin and other standard factors were correlated with survival using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox multivariable survival analysis. For tumor budding assessment, an inter-observer variability study was performed using 100 images of tumor slides stained with Hematoxylin & Eosin and Pan-Cytokeratin. Results Tumor budding was present in all tumors. A substantial agreement between six pathologists was established in distinguishing high-grade from low-grade budding (κ = 0.6 and 0.73 for H&E and PCK images respectively). High-grade budding was identified in 56% of tumors (28/50). It was an adverse prognostic factor independent of tumor size, resection margins status, nodal status and vascular invasion (p = 0.008). Tumor budding was significantly associated with vimentin expression (p = 0.002). Conclusions The association of tumor budding with vimentin expression supported the idea that EMT is a key process in PDAC responsible for progression and drug resistance. Consequently, the elucidation of EMT molecular biology and development of new targeted therapy may improve disease outcome.

Bullous morphea is a rare variant of localized scleroderma characterized by occasional intermittent blisters. Lichen sclerosus is a chronic inflammatory disease. The coexistence of morphea and lichen sclerosus has been reported in different sites in the same patient and more rarely in the same lesion. We report the case of a 54-year-old woman with an atypical presentation of bullous morphea and some histological features of lichen sclerosus. She presented with a 5-year history of an ulcerated plaque, with a sclerotic and atrophic center and indurated budding margins, localized on the lumbar back. Initially the diagnosis of a squamous cell carcinoma was suggested. A skin biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of bullous morphea and showed some histological features of lichen sclerosus. Topical betamethasone and silicone gel ointment were prescribed leading to complete healing of the ulceration within five months. Our case is unusual because of the atypical clinical presentation, the histological aspect combining signs of bullous morphea and lichen sclerosus, and the favorable results with the use of local corticotherapy and silicone gel.

Fetal rhabdomyomatous nephroblastoma (FRN) is a rare variant of Wilms tumor with distinct morphologic features and biologic behavior compared to conventional nephroblastoma. It mainly occurs in patients under 4 years. In adults, extremely rare cases of nephroblastoma were reported. Among these cases, none has been interested a FRN. We report an exceptional case of a 31-year-old woman diagnosed with FRN discovered incidentally, to illustrate clinical and histopathological characteristics of this entity.

Introduction La gale est une ectoparasitose frequente causee par un parasite Sarcoptes Scabiei. Elle se manifeste par un prurit a predominance nocturne avec des lesions vesiculeuses, des nodules et des sillons scabieux de topographie evocatrice. Des formes atypiques de la gale (gale bulleuse, incognito, hyperkeratosique) donnent des tableaux trompeurs et peuvent imiter d’autres affections dermatologiques. Ces formes rares sont source de retard diagnostic et d’erreur therapeutique. Nous rapportons une presentation atypique rare de la gale chez un sujet âge. Observation Un homme âge de 67 ans s’est presente a notre consultation pour une eruption prurigineuse diffuse evoluant depuis 3 mois. Il rapportait une aggravation apres la prise orale de pristinamycine. A l’examen, il avait des lesions erythemato-vesiculeuses crouteuses par endroits au niveau des avants bras associees a des placard erythemato-papuleux etendus recouverts de croutes meliceriques au niveau de l’abdomen, du tronc et des membres inferieurs, realisant un aspect d’erythrodermie. Le patient n’avait pas de manifestations extra cutanes notamment pas de fievre ou adenopathies. Le bilan biologique etait normal, hormis une hypereosinophilie a 1490. Devant ce tableau clinique, les diagnostics principalement evoques etaient : un lymphome cutane T, une toxidermie, un psoriasis, un eczema. Une biopsie cutanee etait faite montrant un epiderme acanthosique avec des foyers de spongiose, sans necrose keratinocytaire. Le derme superficiel comportait un infiltrat inflammatoire de densite moderee perivasculaire et interstitiel. De nombreux mastocytes etaient mis en evidence par l’anti CD117 (C-kit). Cet aspect histologique etait en faveur d’une mastocytose. Le patient etait traite par dermocorticoides, engendrant une extension des lesions et apparition de bulles tendues a contenu clair au niveau de l’abdomen et du dos. Devant l’aggravation des lesions sous dermocorticoides, le diagnostic de gale incognito etait evoque. L’examen parasitologique montrait la presence d’œufs et d’excrements du sarcopte. Un traitement par benzoate de benzyle etait debute chez toute la famille avec des mesures d’hygiene et des antihistaminiques. Une amelioration nette etait notee apres 2 semaines avec disparition du prurit et des lesions cutanees. Discussion La gale incognito est une gale meconnue qui a ete traitee a tort par des corticoides topiques ou generaux. Elle donne un tableau atypique avec des lesions polymorphes : macules, papules ou bulles, comme le cas de notre patient, mimant ainsi des dermatoses bulleuses. En se referent a la litterature, des cas de gales incognito mimant une pemphigoide bulleuse ont ete decrits. La gale incognito peut imiter aussi d’autres dermatoses : un lupus erythemateux systemique, les papules de Gottron de dermtomyosite, une mastocytose, une pustulose sous-corne, un psoriasis. Le terme de gale surrepticius etait recemment introduit pour englober les differentes presentations atypiques de la gale qui peuvent etres pris pour une autre dermatose. La presence de mastocytes dans la biopsie renforce l’hypothese deja decrite stipulant le role des mastocytes dans la pathogenese de la gale. En effet, le nombre de mastocytes etait eleve dans plusieurs biopsies, surtout la nuit, avec des images de degranulation mastocytaire. Ceci explique les cas de gale simulant une mastocytose decrits chez des enfants, qui peuvent presenter meme un signe de Darier positif. Les memes alternatives therapeutiques de la gale classique sont preconisees au cours de la gale incognito. Conclusion A travers ce cas, nous insistons sur le diagnostic d’une forme rare de gale : la gale incognito qui doit etre consideree devant toute dermatose prurigineuse aggravee par des dermocorticoides.

Introduction: Les objectifs de notre travail sont d’evaluer l’impact pronostic de la profondeur d’infiltration tumorale du chorion et de l’envahissement ou non de la musculaire muqueuse des tumeurs pT1 de la vessie en etudiant les taux de recidive et de progression, les survies globale, sans recidive et sans progression. Patients et Methodes: La relecture de toutes les lames a ete effectuee pour determiner la presence ou non de la musculaire muqueuse, son envahissement (pT1b) ou non (pT1a) et la profondeur d’envahissement du chorion (pT1 m: envahissement unifocal ≤ 0,5 mm ou pT1e: envahissement unifocal > 0,5 mm ou multiple). Resultats: En fonction de l’invasion de la musculaire muqueuse, les taux de recidive et de progression etaient plus frequents pour les tumeurs pT1b par rapport a celles pT1a, avec un taux de recidive de 84.6% (p = 0,0012) et de progression de 38.5% (p = 0,003). En fonction du degre d’invasion du chorion, la recidive et la progression etaient plus frequentes pour les tumeurs pT1e par rapport a celles pT1 m (respectivement 57.2 (p = 0,05) et 17.9% (p = 0.11)). La survie moyenne sans recidive etait de 70.3 mois pour les tumeurs pT1a et 53.6 mois pour celles pT1b (p = 0,046), et elle etait de 61.7 mois pour les tumeurs pT1e et de 55.5 mois pour celles pT1 m (p = 0,85). Conclusion: Le classement des ces tumeurs en fonction de l’importance d’envahissement du chorion et del’infiltration de la musculaire muqueuse a prouve son efficacite a travers les taux de recidive et de progressiontumorale chez nos malades. Mots cles: tumeur vesicale; survie; recidive; progression de la maladie English Title: Prognostic interest of tumoral infiltration depth of chorion in the evolution of pT1 bladder tumors English Abstract Introduction: The aim of our study was to evaluate the prognostic impact of tumor infiltration depth of the lamina propria and invasion or non-invasion of the muscularis mucosa of pT1 bladder tumors, studyingrecurrence and progression rate, overall survival, disease-free survival and progression-free survival. Patients and methods: All slides were reviewed to determine the presence or absence of muscularis mucosa,invasion above (pT1a) or below (pT1b) the muscularis mucosa, and the invasion depth of the lamina propria (pT1m: a single focus of lamina propria invasion ≤0.5 mm, pT1e: single focus >0.5 mm of lamina propriainvasion or multiple micro-invasive area). Results: Depending on the invasion of the muscularis mucosa, the rate of recurrence and progression wasmore frequent in pT1b tumors in comparison to patients classified pT1a, with a recurrence rate of 84.6% ( p = 0.0012) and a progression rate of 38.5% ( p = 0.003). Depending on the degree of invasion of the laminapropria, the rate of recurrence and progression was more frequent for pT1e tumors in comparison to pT1m,with a recurrence rate of 57.2% ( p = 0.05) and a progression rate of 17.9% ( p = 0.11). Although neurological features are commonly encountered in Whipple"s disease (WD), presentation with purely neurological patterns is uncommon. Exclusive confinement to the central nervous system (CNS) is extremely rare. In these cases, the development of an isolated cerebral mass is exceptional. In the present paper, the authors describe a case of a 68-year-old man who presented with partial seizures. The neurological examination was normal. The imaging showed a cystic lesion. This tumor-like lesion was removed by performing frontal craniotomy. A histopathological investigation revealed the presence of numerous perivascular foamy histiocytes infiltrating the brain parenchyma. The majority of these histiocytes showed Periodic acid-schiff (PAS)-positive intense staining, which is distinctive feature of cerebral WD. The diagnosis was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of cerebrospinal fluid. There were no gastrointestinal symptoms and no PAS inclusions in intestinal mucosa. The patient received Ceftriaxone intravenously followed by oral trimethoprime-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ) for 12 months and recovered well. This case illustrates atypical WD, confined exclusively to the central nervous system.

Introduction La dermatose neutrophilique urticarienne (DNU) est une nouvelle entite recemment decrite qui fait partie du spectre des dermatoses neutrophiliques (DN). Elle est souvent associee a des maladies inflammatoires. Nous rapportons deux cas de DNU, l’un survenant dans un contexte de myelome a IgG et l’autre secondaire a une hepatite B. Observations Observation no°1 : il s’agissait d’un homme âge de 55 ans, suivi depuis 3 mois pour un myelome multiple a IgG, qui nous a consultes pour une eruption cutanee peu prurigineuse durant depuis quelques jours. L’examen dermatologique trouvait des plaques erythemato-papuleuses, fixes interessant le tronc et les membres superieurs. L’eruption s’accompagnait de polyarthralgies et d’asthenie. Le bilan biologique montrait un syndrome inflammatoire biologique et des anticorps antinucleaires (AAN) negatifs. La biopsie cutanee revelait un infiltrat neutrophilique perivasculaire sans vasculite. Le diagnostic de DNU associee a un myelome IgG etait retenu. Le patient etait mis sous corticotherapie generale, avec une regression complete des lesions au bout d’une semaine. Observation no°2 : il s’agissait d’une patiente âgee de 57 ans, aux antecedents d’hepatite B sous entecavir depuis 4 mois, qui s’est presentee pour des plaques erythemateuses infiltrees non prurigineuses siegeant au niveau des jambes avec des lesions papuleuses œdemateuses palmoplantaires. Cette eruption durait depuis 3 semaines et evoluait dans un contexte de fievre et de polyarthralgies. L’examen articulaire notait une synovite au niveau des poignets et des genoux. Il existait un syndrome inflammatoire biologique. L’histologie montrait un infiltrat perivasculaire neutrophilique sans vasculite associee. Ainsi, le diagnostic de DNU associee a une hepatite B etait pose. La patiente etait traitee par colchicine (1 mg/j) avec disparition complete des lesions. Discussion La DNU est variante rare, distincte de l’urticaire commune et de la vasculite urticarienne. Elle se distingue, d’une part, cliniquement par un caractere peu prurigineux et fixe des lesions cutanees, et d’autre part, histologiquement par un infiltrat neutrophilique en file indienne. Elle apparait dans la majorite des cas dans un contexte de pathologies inflammatoires, particulierement des connectivites, absentes dans nos 2 cas. A notre connaissance, l’association entre DNU et myelome a IgG est exceptionnellement rapportee dans la litterature, quant a l’hepatite B aucun cas n’a ete decrit auparavant. Concernant le traitement, la corticotherapie generale s’avere peu efficace et la colchicine, comme chez notre deuxieme patiente, pourrait etre une bonne alternative en inhibant la migration des polynucleaires. Conclusion Nous rapportons deux cas de DNU d’etiologies inhabituelles.

Poisoning and accidental oral intoxication are major health problems worldwide. Considering the insufficient efficacy of the currently available detoxification treatments, a pioneering oral detoxifying adsorbent agent based on a single biocompatible metal-organic framework (MOF) is here proposed for the efficient decontamination of drugs commonly implicated in accidental or voluntary poisoning. Furthermore, the in vivo toxicity and biodistribution of a MOF via oral administration have been investigated for the first time. Une quinzaine de cas de PEAL seulement ont ete rapportes dans la litterature, tous secondaires a une prise medicamenteuse. Nous decrivons six cas pediatriques de PEAL, tous observes au printemps ; pour aucun d’entre eux une cause medicamenteuse ne pouvait etre retenue. Observations Durant les trois dernieres annees (2011 a 2013), nous avons observe six cas de PEAL chez six enfants tunisiens âges de 9 a 14 ans. Tous etaient survenus en saison printaniere. Le diagnostic de PEAL etait retenu avec certitude dans tous les cas selon les criteres de l’EuroSCAR et la definition de Prange et al. L’enquete etiologique permettait dans tous les cas d’ecarter une origine medicamenteuse. L’exposition a une plante (Thapsia garganica) etait retenue comme facteur etiologique chez l’un de nos malades. Discussion L’origine medicamenteuse de la PEAL n’est pas la seule. Le caractere saisonnier de cette dermatose pourrait faire suspecter d’autres causes, notamment virales, vegetales ou par exposition a des allergenes aeroportes.

Pea pods, a food waste by-product, was studied for its chemical composition and evaluated for its in vitro antioxidant, protein denaturating and anti-acetylcholinesterase (anti-AChE) and in vivo antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic and cytoprotective properties in alloxan-induced diabetic mice. The pea pods had 51% fiber, 28.2% carbohydrates, 14.2% crude protein, 4.5% lipids and 4.5% ash which consisted mainly of K, Mg, Ca, Na, Fe, Zn and Cu (in descending order). The fatty acid (FA) profile showed that linoleic, linolenic and palmitic acids were the main components. Although its lipids are highly oxidation susceptible, the lipid fraction showed good nutritional attributes as shown by its low atherogenic, thrombogenic and hypoholestrolemic values. The pea pods methanol extract (PPE) showed very low antioxidant activity but it had a strong inhibitory effect on heat-induced BSA denaturation suggesting its possible anti-inflammatory effects. Oral administration of PPE to diabetic mice decreased serum glucose levels, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, urea, creatinine, alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase activities. L'osteogenese imparfaite (OI) est un groupe heterogene de maladies affectant le collagene de type I et caracterisees par une fragilite osseuse. Les formes letales sont rares et se caracterisent par une micromelie avec deformation des membres. Un diagnostic antenatal d'OI letale a ete fait dans deux cas, par echographie a 17 et a 25 semaines d'amenorrhee, complelees par un scanner du squelette fœtal dans un cas. Une interruption therapeutique de grossesse a ete indiquee dans les deux cas.

Countless studies showed that [60]fullerene (C(60)) and derivatives could have many potential biomedical applications. However, while several independent research groups showed that C(60) has no acute or sub-acute toxicity in various experimental models, more than 25 years after its discovery the in vivo fate and the chronic effects of this fullerene remain unknown. If the potential of C(60) and derivatives in the biomedical field have to be fulfilled these issues must be addressed. Here we show that oral administration of C(60) dissolved in olive oil (0.8 mg/ml) at reiterated doses (1.7 mg/kg of body weight) to rats not only does not entail chronic toxicity but it almost doubles their lifespan. The effects of C(60)-olive oil solutions in an experimental model of CCl(4) intoxication in rat strongly suggest that the effect on lifespan is mainly due to the attenuation of age-associated increases in oxidative stress. Pharmacokinetic studies show that dissolved C(60) is absorbed by the gastro-intestinal tract and eliminated in a few tens of hours. These results of importance in the fields of medicine and toxicology should open the way for the many possible -and waited for- biomedical applications of C(60) including cancer therapy, neurodegenerative disorders, and ageing.

Introduction Les dermatoses neutrophiliques representent un large spectre de maladies inflammatoires associant plusieurs entites cliniques. Elles sont caracterisees histologiquement par un infiltrat neutrophile dermique intense sans vascularite significative. La dermatose urticarienne neutrophilique (DUN) est une entite recemment decrite qui apparait souvent dans un contexte de maladie systemique. Nous rapportons une nouvelle observation. Observation Madame N.S. âgee de 57 ans, porteuse d’une hepatite B sous entecavir depuis 4 mois, consultait pour des plaques erythemateuses inflammatoires infiltrees des jambes associees a des papules erythemateuses des pieds et des mains. Les lesions evoluaient depuis deux semaines. La patiente etait febrile et se plaignait d’arthralgies au niveau des grosses articulations. Le reste de l’examen physique revelait une tumefaction au niveau des genoux et des poignets en rapport avec une synovite. Il n’y avait pas de photosensibilite. Le bilan biologique montrait un syndrome inflammatoire biologique (VS = 97 ; CRP = 49) et des anticorps antinucleaires faiblement positifs (1/180). La biopsie cutanee a confirme le diagnostic d’une dermatose urticarienne neutrophilique. La patiente etait mise sous corticotherapie generale a la dose de 0,5 mg/kg/j en association a la colchicine a la dose de 1 mg/j avec disparition complete des lesions. Discussion Le concept de « dermatose neutrophilique urticarienne » a recemment ete propose par D. Lipsker et al. pour designer une eruption cutanee qui est cliniquement distincte de l’urticaire commune ou de la vascularite urticarienne par son caractere peu sureleve et non prurigineux ainsi que par sa couleur rouge pâle. La DUN est caracterisee histologiquement par un infiltrat neutrophilique perivasculaire et interstitiel (dit « en file indienne »), avec une importante leucocytoclasie mais sans vascularite ni œdeme dermique. Elle s’associe preferentiellement a des affections systemiques. Les associations signalees a ce jour comprennent l’arthrite juvenile idiopathique, la maladie de Still, le lupus erythemateux dissemine, le syndrome de Schnitzler. Des cas faisant suite a une prise medicamenteuse ou a une infection streptococcique ont ete rapportes. Par ailleurs, l’association a une hepatite B n’a pas ete decrite auparavant. Notre patiente ne presente pas assez de criteres pour retenir une connectivite bien defini. Cependant, la surveillance a moyen et a long terme parait necessaire afin de detecter une manifestation ulterieure d’une maladie de systeme, vu la frequence de l’association et le terrain sous-jacent. La colchicine qui a ete efficace chez notre patiente, illustre l’interet des inhibiteurs de la migration des polynucleaires neutrophiles, comportant aussi la disulone, dans le traitement la DUN.

Li Fraumeni Syndrome (LFS) is a rare autosomal disorder characterized by a familial clustering of tumors. Analysis of several series of LFS families have shown that 70% of such families are attributable to germ-line mutations in TP53. We report the case of a patient who had a first degree family antecedent of cancer in young ages. At the age of 31 years, the patient was operated of bladder papillary superficial carcinoma; five years later, he was treated for a high grade pleomorphe sarcoma of the left thigh and treated by surgery, adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy. At the age of 38 years, after abdominal pain, radiologic examination reveled pancreatic tumor with bone and lymphatic metastases. The patient died one month later from pulmonary embolism. Sequencing revealed a germiline mutation of this patient that was confirmed in a member of his family in codon 1009C>T, protein Arg337Cys, exon 10 of TP53 gene this mutation was revealed in his nephew (died at the age of 20 from bone sarcoma).

Resume Les proliferations myofibroblastiques de la vessie chez l’adulte sont des lesions rares d’evolution benigne. Ces proliferations, qu’elles soient d’apparition spontanee ou secondaire a une instrumentation, ont une morphologie et un comportement identiques. Plusieurs denominations sont utilisees : pseudotumeur inflammatoire ; tumeur fibromyxoide pseudosarcomateuse ; fasciite nodulaire ; nodule a cellules fusiformes postoperatoire… Certains auteurs suggerent de grouper ces lesions sous le meme terme de « proliferations myofibroblastiques pseudosarcomateuses » et insistent sur la necessite de les distinguer de la tumeur myofibroblastique inflammatoire survenant chez l’enfant. Cette derniere, recemment reconnue comme une veritable tumeur, est dotee d’un potentiel malin capable de recidiver et de donner des metastases. Nous rapportons l’observation d’un jeune homme de 17 ans qui avait une masse vesicale dont l’examen histopathologique avait conclu a une proliferation myofibroblastique pseudosarcomateuse. Nous discutons a travers une revue de la litterature la relation de cette lesion avec la tumeur myofibroblastique inflammatoire et ses principaux diagnostics differentiels.

Epithelial ovarian tumors are uncommon before 20 years of age and rarely occur before puberty. The vast majority of these tumors are benign, and few cases of malignant and borderline tumors are described. We report a case of a 4-year-old premenarchal girl, previously healthy, who presented with two abdominal masses. Laboratory analysis of blood showed elevation of the serum level of the CA-125. Ultrasonographic examination disclosed bilateral cystic ovarian masses. Laparoscopic exploration revealed bilateral ovarian multicystic masses with retro-uterine peritoneal implant. Bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy with implant resection was performed. Histologic findings were consistent with a serous borderline tumors of both ovaries and the peritoneal implant was of the non-invasive type. There is no evidence of recurrence at 3-year follow-up. To our knowledge, there are only four cases of ovarian borderline tumors in premenarchal girls reported in the English literature: three of the mucinous type and only one of the serous type.

Resume Les tumeurs angiomatoides de la thyroide sont des tumeurs hautement malignes caracterisees sur le plan morphologique par leur differenciation vasculaire et leur polymorphisme cytologique. Leur histogenese reste un sujet de controverse, entre les defenseurs d’une origine angiosarcomateuse et ceux qui suggerent qu’il s’agit d’une variante angiomatoide du carcinome anaplasique. Nous rapportons un cas de tumeur angiomatoide de la thyroide survenu chez une femme de 68 ans et nous discutons a travers une revue de la litterature les criteres anatomopathologiques permettant d’aider dans la distinction entre angiosarcome primitif et carcinome anaplasique.

International audience; Titanate nanotubes (Ti-Nts) have proved to be a potential candidate for drug delivery due to their large surface change and higher cellular uptake as a direct consequence of their tubular shape. Ti-Nts were assessed for their safety, their kinetics of cellular uptake on U87-MG cell line and for genistein loading efficiency. No cytotoxic effect was observed under higher empty Ti-Nts concentrations up to 100 mu g mL(-1). The multiwalled tubular morphology was found to be an important parameter promoting high drug loading. The Ti-Nts could achieve higher genistein drug-loading content (25.2%) and entrapment efficiency (51.2%) leading to a controlled drug release as well as a higher cellular uptake of genistein-loaded- Ti-Nts which induces higher cytotoxicity and significant anti-migratory effect on U87-MG human glioblastoma astrocytoma, promising efficient antitumor activity.

Si/SiOx nanoparticles (NPs) produced by laser ablation in deionized water or aqueous biocompatible solutions present a novel extremely promising object for biomedical applications, but the interaction of these NPs with biological systems has not yet been systematically examined. Here, we present the first comprehensive study of biodistribution, biodegradability and toxicity of laser-synthesized Si-SiOx nanoparticles using a small animal model. Despite a relatively high dose of Si-NPs (20 mg/kg) administered intravenously in mice, all controlled parameters (serum, enzymatic, histological etc.) were found to be within safe limits 3 h, 24 h, 48 h and 7 days after the administration. We also determined that the nanoparticles are rapidly sequestered by the liver and spleen, then further biodegraded and directly eliminated in urine without any toxicity effects. Finally, we found that intracellular accumulation of Si-NPs does not induce any oxidative stress damage. Our results evidence a huge potential in using these safe and biodegradable NPs in biomedical applications, in particular as vectors, contrast agents and sensitizers in cancer therapy and diagnostics (theranostics).

Although neurological features are commonly encountered in Whipple"s disease (WD), presentation with purely neurological patterns is uncommon. Exclusive confinement to the central nervous system (CNS) is extremely rare. In these cases, the development of an isolated cerebral mass is exceptional. In the present paper, the authors describe a case of a 68-year-old man who presented with partial seizures. The neurological examination was normal. The imaging showed a cystic lesion. This tumor-like lesion was removed by performing frontal craniotomy. A histopathological investigation revealed the presence of numerous perivascular foamy histiocytes infiltrating the brain parenchyma. The majority of these histiocytes showed Periodic acid-schiff (PAS)-positive intense staining, which is distinctive feature of cerebral WD. The diagnosis was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of cerebrospinal fluid. There were no gastrointestinal symptoms and no PAS inclusions in intestinal mucosa. The patient received Ceftriaxone intravenously followed by oral trimethoprime-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ) for 12 months and recovered well. This case illustrates atypical WD, confined exclusively to the central nervous system.
