Background: To compare the clinical outcomes of two treatment modalities, initial surgery and primary definitive radiotherapy (RT), in Taiwanese patients diagnosed with cT1−2N0M0 oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC). Methods: Between 2011 and 2019, we analyzed data for 13,542 cT1−2N0M0 patients who underwent initial surgery (n = 13,542) or definitive RT with a dosage of at least 6600 cGy (n = 145) for the treatment of OCSCC. To account for baseline differences, we employed propensity score (PS) matching, resulting in two well‐balanced study groups (initial surgery, n = 580; definitive RT, n = 145). Results: Before PS matching, the 5‐year disease‐specific survival (DSS) rates were 88% for the surgery group and 58% for the RT group. After PS matching, the 5‐year DSS rates of the two groups were 86% and 58%, respectively. Similarly, the 5‐year overall survival (OS) rates before PS matching were 80% for the surgery group and 36% for the RT group, whereas after PS matching, they were 73% and 36%, respectively. All these differences were statistically significant (p < 0.0001). A multivariable analysis identified treatment with RT, older age, stage II tumors, and a higher burden of comorbidities as independent risk factors for both DSS and OS. We also examined the 5‐year outcomes for various subgroups (margin ≥5 mm, margin <5 mm, positive margins, RT combined with chemotherapy, and RT alone) as follows: DSS, 89%/88%/79%/63%/51%, respectively, p < 0.0001; OS, 82%/79%/68%/39%/32%, respectively, p < 0.0001. Conclusions: In Taiwanese patients with cT1−2N0M0 OCSCC, a remarkably low proportion (1.1%) completed definitive RT. A significant survival disparity of 30% was observed between patients who underwent initial surgery and those who received definitive RT. This study compared the effects of megestrol acetate (MA) prophylactic (p-MA) versus reactive (r-MA) use for critical body-weight loss (>5% from baseline) during concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) in patients with advanced pharyngolaryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (PLSCC). Patients receiving CCRT alone in two phase-II trials were included for analyses. Both the p-MA and r-MA cohorts received the same treatment protocol at the same institution, and the critical body-weight loss, survival, and adverse event profiles were compared. The mean (SD) weight loss was 5.1% (4.7%) in the p-MA cohort (n = 54) vs. 8.1% (4.6%) in the r-MA cohort (n = 50) (p =.001). The percentage of subjects with body-weight loss >5% was 42.6% in the p-MA cohort vs. 68.0% in the r-MA cohort (p =.011). Tube feeding was needed in 22.2% of p-MA vs. 62.0% of r-MA patients (p <.001). Less neutropenia (26.0% vs. 70.0% [p <.001]) and a shorter duration of grade 3-4 mucositis (2.4 ± 1.4 vs. 3.6 ± 2.0 wk [p =.009]) were observed with p-MA treatment. Disease-specific survival, locoregional control, or distant metastasis-free survival did not differ. Less competing mortality from secondary primary cancer resulted in a better overall survival trend in the p-MA cohort. p-MA may reduce body-weight loss and improve adverse event profiles during CCRT for patients with PLSCC. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that affects joint health and can harm other organs. Modifiable factors such as lifestyle choices, including alcohol consumption, can influence the development and severity of RA. Moderate alcohol intake may reduce the risk of RA, and it has been found to have protective effects against other autoimmune diseases. The impact of alcohol consumption on RA disease activity is still debated, with conflicting findings. Standardizing research methodologies and considering different types of alcoholic beverages are important for further understanding the relationship between alcohol and RA. Background: To investigate the frequency of temporal lobe necrosis (TLN) soon after radiotherapy (RT) and identify differences among patients with various types of head and neck cancer (HNC) and between different RT methods. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 483 patients with HNC who had completed RT in our hospital after January, 2015. These patients were followed-up at the radio-oncology department and received contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) to identify metastases or recurrence of cancer at regular intervals. Meanwhile, the occurrence of TLN, graded according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events V5.0, was recorded. We categorized the patients into nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and non-NPC groups and compared the cumulative occurrence of TLN between the groups using Kaplan–Meier and Cox regression analyses. We further compared the cumulative occurrence of TLN between proton beam therapy (PBT) and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) in patients with any HNC, NPC, and non-NPC HNC. Results: Compared with the non-NPC group, the NPC group had a higher frequency of TLN (5.6% vs. 0.4%, p < 0.01) and were more commonly associated with TLN in the Kaplan–Meier analysis (p < 0.01) and the Cox regression model after covariates were adjusted for (adjusted hazard ratio: 13.35, 95% confidence interval: 1.37–130.61) during the follow-up period. Furthermore, the frequency of TLN was similar between patients receiving PBT and those receiving VMAT (PBT vs. VMAT: 4.7% vs. 6.3%, p = 0.76). Kaplan–Meier analysis revealed that the accumulated risks of TLN were similar between PBT and VMAT in patients with any HNC (p = 0.44), NPC (p = 0.84), and non-NPC HNC (p = 0.70). Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that patients with NPC are susceptible to TLN during the early period after RT. Vaccination has been a game-changer in the long battle against COVID-19. However, waning vaccine-induced immunity and the immune evasion of emerging variants create challenges. The rapid-fire development of bivalent vaccines (BVs), comprising ancestral strains and a new variant, was authorized to prevent COVID-19, but the effectiveness of the updated vaccines remains largely unclear. Electronic databases were searched to investigate the immunogenicity and reactogenicity of BVs in humans. As of March 2023, 20 trials were identified. Compared with monovalent vaccination, the induced immunogenicity against ancestral strains was similar. The BVs demonstrated approximately 33–50% higher immunogenicity values against additional variant strains. An observational cohort study showed the additional clinical effectiveness of the BVs. The adverse events were similar. In conclusion, our systematic review found that the BVs had equal immunogenicity against ancestral strains without safety concerns. Approximately 33–50% increased additional antibody titers and clinical effectiveness against additional variant strains were observed in subjects with a BV vaccine with moderate heterogeneity, especially for BA.1-containing BVs. The mechanical properties of soft tissues are driven by their complex, heterogeneous composition and structure. Interestingly, studies of soft tissue biomechanics often ignore spatial heterogeneity. In our work, we are therefore interested in exploring the impact of tissue heterogeneity on the mechanical properties of soft tissues. Therein, we specifically focus on soft tissue heterogeneity arising from spatially varying thickness. To this end, our first goal is to develop a non-destructive measurement technique that has a high spatial resolution, provides continuous thickness maps, and is fast. Our secondary goal is to demonstrate that including spatial variation in thickness is important to the accuracy of biomechanical analyses. To this end, we use mitral valve leaflet tissue as our model system. To attain our first goal, we identify a soft tissue-specific contrast protocol that enables thickness measurements using a Keyence profilometer. We also show that this protocol does not affect our tissues' mechanical properties. To attain our second goal, we conduct virtual biaxial, bending, and buckling tests on our model tissue both ignoring and considering spatial variation in thickness. Thereby, we show that the assumption of average, homogeneous thickness distributions significantly alters the results of biomechanical analyses when compared to including true, spatially varying thickness distributions. In conclusion, our work provides a novel measurement technique that can capture continuous thickness maps non-invasively, at high resolution, and in a short time. Although alcohol is a well-known causal factor associated with liver diseases, challenges remain in inducing liver fibrosis in experimental rodent models. These challenges include rodents' natural aversion to high concentrations of alcohol, rapid alcohol metabolism, the need for a prolonged duration of alcohol administration, and technical difficulties. Therefore, it is crucial to establish an experimental model that can replicate the features of alcoholic liver fibrosis. The objective of this study was to develop a feasible rat model of alcoholic liver fibrosis that emulates human drinking patterns and combines low-dose chemicals within a relatively short time frame. We successfully developed an 8-week rat model of alcoholic liver fibrosis that mimics chronic and heavy drinking patterns. Rats were fed with a control liquid diet, an alcohol liquid diet, or alcohol liquid diet combined with multiple binges via oral gavage. To accelerate the progression of alcoholic liver fibrosis, we introduced low-dose carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) through intraperitoneal injection. Background: Some prospective studies have shown that second‐generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) provide better control in patients with non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with uncommon epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations. However, studies comparing second‐line chemotherapy efficacy between NSCLC patients with common and uncommon EGFR mutations remain rare. This retrospective study compared treatment outcomes in these patients. Methods: Patients with EGFR‐mutated advanced‐stage NSCLC who received first‐line EGFR‐TKIs in a tertiary referral center were retrospectively reviewed between January 2010 and August 2022. Patients with a negative T790M test at disease progression who received second‐line chemotherapy were enrolled. We compared progression‐free (PFS) and overall (OS) survival between advanced NSCLC patients with common and uncommon EGFR mutations using Kaplan–Meier and log‐rank tests. Results: In total, 209 (54.8%) patients had a negative T790M mutation test and received second‐line chemotherapy, of which 192 (91.8%) had a common EGFR mutation (exon 19 deletion or exon 21 L858R substitution), and 17 (8.2%) had an uncommon EGFR mutation. Patients with common EGFR mutations had significantly longer PFS than those with uncommon EGFR mutations (4.57 vs. 2.57 months, p = 0.031). A Cox proportional hazard regression analysis controlling for potential confounding factors indicated that an uncommon EGFR mutation was an independent prognostic factor for PFS. Conclusion: This study suggests that patients with uncommon EGFR mutations have poorer chemotherapy responses and shorter survival than those with common EGFR mutations. We examined the potential mediating roles of domain-specific physical activities and sedentary behaviors in the relationship between area-level socioeconomic status (SES) and cardiometabolic risk. Data were from the 2011/2012 Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle study (n = 3431). The outcome was a clustered cardiometabolic risk (CCR) score, and the exposure was suburb-level SES. Potential mediators were domain-specific physical activities and sedentary behaviors. Multilevel linear regression models examined associations between SES and potential mediators (α) and between mediators and CCR (β). Mediation was assessed using the joint-significance test. Higher SES was associated with a lower CCR score. Lower SES was associated with less frequent walking for transport, lower vigorous-intensity recreational physical activity, and higher TV time, which were associated with higher CCR scores. However, higher SES was associated with longer transport-related sitting time (all modes and in cars), which were associated with higher CCR scores. The SES-cardiometabolic risk relationship may be partially explained by walking for transport, vigorous-intensity recreational physical activity, and TV viewing. These findings, which require corroboration from prospective evidence and clarification of the roles of transport-related sitting and occupational physical activity, can inform initiatives addressing socioeconomic inequalities in cardiometabolic health. • People living in advantaged areas were likely to have lower cardiometabolic risk. • Inequality was mostly explained by vigorous-intensity recreational physical activity. • Inequality was also in part explained by TV viewing and transport-related walking. • The mediation effect for transport-related sitting was contrary to the inequality. KRAS mutation in tumor tissue is a well-known predictor of resistance to the treatment of anti-EGFR antibodies in metastatic colorectal cancers (mCRC). However, the prognostic value of low-frequency plasma circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) KRAS mutation in predicting treatment resistance in pretreated mCRC patients remains controversial. This study retrospectively reviewed the clinical course, including response to anti-EGFR and anti-VEGF therapies, and changes in serum tumor marker levels along with image studies in mCRC patients with <1.5% KRAS mutations detected in plasma ctDNA by next-generation sequencing (NGS) at a single center in Taiwan. We identified six pretreated mCRC patients with low-frequency KRAS G12V/G12D/G12S/G13D mutations (variant allele frequency 0.26~1.23%) in plasma ctDNA. Co-occurring low-frequency ctDNA mutations in APC, TP53, MAP2K1, KEAP1, or CTNNB1 were also detected. Although all six patients had treatment adjustments within one month after the ctDNA genetic test, image-evident tumor progression was noted in all patients within a median of 4 months afterwards. Re-challenge therapy with a combination of anti-EGFR, anti-VEGF, and FOLFIRI chemotherapy was found to be ineffective in a patient with 0.38% KRAS G12D mutation in baseline ctDNA. Background: Adiponectin is a key protein produced in adipose tissue, with crucial involvement in multiple metabolic processes. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), one of the phthalate compounds used as a plasticizer, has been shown to decrease adiponectin levels in vitro and in vivo studies. However, the role of angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) gene polymorphism and epigenetic changes in the relationship between DEHP exposure and adiponectin levels is not well understood. Methods: This study examined the correlation between urine levels of DEHP metabolite, epigenetic marker 5mdC/dG, ACE gene phenotypes, and adiponectin levels in a sample of 699 individuals aged 12–30 from Taiwan. Results: Results showed a positive relationship between mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (MEHP) and 5mdC/dG, and a negative association between both MEHP and 5mdC/dG with adiponectin. The study found that the inverse relationship between MEHP and adiponectin was stronger when levels of 5mdC/dG were above the median. This was supported by differential unstandardized regression coefficients (− 0.095 vs. − 0.049, P value for interaction = 0.038)). Subgroup analysis also showed a negative correlation between MEHP and adiponectin in individuals with the I/I ACE genotype, but not in those with other genotypes, although the P value for interaction was borderline significant (0.06). The structural equation model analysis indicated that MEHP has a direct inverse effect on adiponectin and an indirect effect via 5mdC/dG. Conclusions: In this young Taiwanese population, our findings suggest that urine MEHP levels are negatively correlated with serum adiponectin levels, and epigenetic modifications may play a role in this association. Background: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the jaw requires a differential diagnosis to exclude cancer recurrence. Here, we sought to develop a scoring system comprising 18F-FDG PET/CT parameters for distinguishing between the two conditions in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Methods: The study consisted of 103 OSCC patients with suspected ORN of the jaw. All participants underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging within 6 months of diagnostic histopathology. Following extraction of PET parameters, we identified clinical and imaging predictors of mandibular recurrence-free survival (MRFS) using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis and multivariate Cox regression models. Results: The results of histopathology revealed mandibular cancer recurrence in 24 patients (23.3%). Multivariate Cox regression analyses identified an age at diagnosis ≤ 52 years (P = 0.013), a location of the SUVmax voxel with soft tissue predominance (P = 0.019), and mandibular total lesion glycolysis (TLG) > 62.68 g (P < 0.001) as independent risk factors for MRFS. A scoring system was devised with scores from 0 (no risk factor) to 3 (presence of all three risk factors). High-risk patients with a score of 2–3 compared with score of 0–1 had a significantly higher likelihood of mandibular cancer recurrence (hazard ratio: 32.50, 95% confidence interval: 8.51–124.18, P < 0.001). The scoring system had a sensitivity of 87.50%, a specificity of 82.28%, and an accuracy of 83.50% for identifying mandibular cancer recurrence. Objective: We investigated recent trends in youth suicide and their associations with societal and psychological factors in Taiwan. Methods: Suicide data (1971–2019) for 10–24 year olds were extracted from Taiwan's national cause-of-death data files. We investigated changes in trends in youth suicide rates, societal factors (gross domestic product per capita, Gini index, overall and youth unemployment rates, divorce rates in people aged 40–59 years [i.e. the age of most 15–24 year olds' parents] and Internet use rates) and psychological distress indicators (youth self-harm rates and the prevalence of worry-related insomnia, and suicide ideation, plan and attempt) using joinpoint regression and graphic examinations. The associations of these factors with youth suicide rates were examined using Prais–Winsten regression. Results: Suicide rates in Taiwan's 10–24 year olds changed from a downward trend (2005–2014) to an upward trend in 2014 and increased 11.5% (95% confidence interval = [5.2%, 18.1%]) annually between 2014 and 2019. There was also an upturn in divorce rates among females aged 40–59 years in 2014 and self-harm rates among 15- to 24-year-old youth in 2013. The prevalence of self-reported insomnia and suicide ideation, plan and attempt in youth started to increase from 2013 to 2016. In the regression analysis, Internet use, female divorce rates and youth self-harm rates were positively associated with youth suicide rates. Conclusion: Suicide rates and the prevalence of suicidal behaviors began to increase in Taiwanese youth in the 2010s. These increases may be associated with concurrent rises in parental divorce rates, Internet use and poor sleep. The role of Programmed Cell Death Ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression in predicting epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKIs) efficacy remains controversial. Recent studies have highlighted that tumor-intrinsic PD-L1 signaling can be modulated by STAT3, AKT, MET oncogenic pathway, epithelial–mesenchymal transition, or BIM expression. This study aimed to investigate whether these underlying mechanisms affect the prognostic role of PD-L1. We retrospectively enrolled patients with EGFR mutant advanced stage NSCLC who received first-line EGFR-TKI between January 2017 and June 2019, the treatment efficacy of EGFR-TKI was assessed. Kaplan–Meier analysis of progression-free survival (PFS) revealed that patients with high BIM expression had shorter PFS, regardless of PD-L1 expression. This result was also supported by the COX proportional hazard regression analysis. In vitro, we further proved that the knockdown of BIM, instead of PDL1, induced more cell apoptosis following gefitinib treatment. Our data suggest that among the pathways affecting tumor-intrinsic PD-L1 signaling, BIM is potentially the underlying mechanism that affects the role of PD-L1 expression in predicting response to EGFR TKI and mediates cell apoptosis under treatment with gefitinib in EGFR-mutant NSCLC. Liver fibrosis is the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) in the liver due to chronic injuries and inflammation. These injuries activate and transform quiescent hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) into proliferative myofibroblast-like cells, which are the key contributors to the secretin of ECM in the fibrotic liver. The insulin-like growth factor 2 receptor (IGF2R) is a multifunctional receptor that is overexpressed on activated HSCs and is a specific molecular marker of activated HSCs in the fibrotic liver. We recently discovered an IGF2R-specific peptide that significantly increases the binding affinity and uptake of a protein-based siRNA nanocomplex to activated HSCs. However, there is a potential concern about the immunogenicity of protein-based siRNA delivery systems. In this study, we used the IGF2R-specific peptide to modify a small peptide-based siRNA nanocomplex for HSC-specific drug delivery. We incorporated a short spacer and glutamate residues into the IGF2R peptides. The siRNA nanocomplex modified with the IGF2R-3GK6E peptide demonstrated higher HSC specificity compared to an unmodified nanocomplex. This peptide-based nanocomplex provides a promising platform to effectively deliver Pcbp2 siRNA to activated HSCs for the treatment of liver fibrosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives To identify genetic variants and polygenic risk score (PRS) relating to female gout and asymptomatic hyperuricaemia (AH) in a genome-wide association study (GWAS). Methods Gout, AH and normouricemia controls were included from Taiwan biobank and China Medical University Hospital. All participants were divided into discovery and replication cohorts for GWAS. PRS was estimated according to whether the variant exhibited a protective effect on the phenotypes or not. Each cohort was separated into two groups by the age of 50 years old. Results A total of 59 472 females were enrolled, and gout and AH occupied 1.60% and 19.59%, respectively. Six variants located in genes SLC2A9 , C5orf22 , CNTNAP2 and GLRX5 were significantly predictors of female gout in those aged ≥50. For those aged <50 years old, only the variant rs147750368 (SPANXN1) on chromosome X was found. Most variants located in genes SLC2A9 , ZNF518B , PKD2 and ABCG2 were found to be significantly related to AH in both age groups. The PRS could explain ∼0.59% to 0.89% of variance of gout in variants with protective effects, which showed 6.2 times of mean PRS in the risk variants, but only 1.2 times in the AH phenotype. Moreover, the PRS also revealed a dose-response trend between AH rates and quartile scores. Conclusion The variants in gene SLC2A9 are the major genetic factors for females associated with gout in those aged ≥50. We propose a pedestrian trajectory prediction algorithm based on the bimodal extended Kalman filter. With this filter, we are able to make full use of the dual-state nature of the pedestrian movement, i.e., the pedestrian is either moving or remains stationary. We apply the dual-mode probability model to describe the state of the pedestrian. Based on this model, we construct the proposed bimodal extended Kalman filter to estimate pedestrian state distribution. The filter obtains the state distribution for each pedestrian in the scene, respectively, and use that state distribution to predict the future trajectories of all the people in the scene. This prediction method estimates the prior probability of each parameter of the model through the dataset and updates the individual posterior probability of the pedestrian state through the bimodal extended Kalman filter. Our model can predict the trajectory of every individual, by taking the social interaction of pedestrians as well as the surrounding physical obstacles into account, with less than fifty model parameters being used, while with the limited parameter, our model could be nearly accurate as other deep learning models and still be comprehensible for model users. Purpose: Spousal caregiving of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients challenges relationship quality and may negatively impact family function. Our purpose was to identify factors associated with family dysfunction in spousal caregivers (SCs) of HNC patients within the first 6 months after treatment. We explored whether patient or SC characteristics differ by level of family dysfunction. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of HNC patient-SC dyads in Taiwan from July 2020 to January 2022 using patient-reported outcomes. Patients were assessed using a set of structured questionnaires to measure performance status, demographic and clinical characteristics, physical function, and social-emotional function. SCs were measured on their hardiness, coping styles, spousal relationship, quality of life, and family function. Results: Of the 132 dyads surveyed, 62.1% of SCs reported a functional family, 34.8% reported a moderately dysfunctional family, and 3.0% reported a highly dysfunctional family. Patient factors associated with family dysfunction (highly dysfunctional or moderately dysfunctional) included lower family annual income and worse social-emotional function. Associated SC factors were lower hardiness, less use of active coping, and worse spousal relationships. Conclusions: Lower family annual income, less patient social-emotional function, less SC hardiness, less SC active coping, and worse SC perceived spousal relationship were associated with perceived family dysfunction. Workplace settings—both internal and external—can influence how workers are physically active or sedentary. Although research has identified some indoor environmental attributes associated with sitting at work, few studies have examined associations of workplace neighbourhood built-environment attributes with workplace sitting time. We examined the cross-sectional associations of perceived and objective workplace neighbourhood built-environment attributes with sitting time at work and for transport among desk-based workers in Japan. Data were collected from a nationwide online survey. The Abbreviated Neighborhood Environment Walkability Scale (n = 2137) and Walk Score® (for a subsample of participants; n = 1163) were used to assess perceived and objective built-environment attributes of workplace neighbourhoods. Self-reported daily average sitting time at work, in cars and in public transport was measured using a Japanese validated questionnaire. Linear regression models estimated the associations of workplace neighbourhood built-environment attributes with sitting time. All perceived workplace neighbourhood built-environment attributes were positively correlated with Walk Score®. However, statistically significant associations with Walk Score® were found for sitting for transport but not for sitting at work. Workers who perceived their workplace neighbourhoods to be more walkable reported a longer time sitting at work and in public transport but a shorter sitting time in cars. Our findings suggest that walkable workplace neighbourhoods may discourage longer car use but have workplaces where workers spend a long time sitting at work. The latter finding further suggests that there may be missed opportunities for desk-based workers to reduce sitting time. Pesticide ingestion is a leading method for suicide worldwide. Paraquat is a highly lethal herbicide when ingested. We assessed the impact of the first-stage ban on the import and production of paraquat (from February 2018) on suicides by pesticide poisoning in Taiwan. Suicide data by method (pesticide vs. non-pesticide), pesticide (paraquat vs. non-paraquat), and area/sex/age were extracted from the national cause-of-death data files (2011–2019). Negative binomial regression was used to estimate changes in suicide rates in 2019, compared to the expected rates based on pre-ban linear trends (2011–2017). The paraquat ban was followed by an estimated 37% (rate ratio [RR] = 0.63, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.54–0.74) reduction in pesticide suicide rate (190 [95% CI 116–277] fewer suicides) in 2019, mainly due to a 58% (RR = 0.42, 95% CI 0.33–0.54) reduction in paraquat suicides (145 [95% CI 92–213] fewer suicides). Larger absolute reductions in pesticide suicides were found in rural areas, males, and the elderly (aged 65+ years) than their counterparts. Except for a 10% (95% CI 3–18%) reduction in overall suicide rates in the elderly, there was no statistical evidence for a change in non-pesticide and overall (all-method) suicides. Background: We compared the clinical outcomes of patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) with cN+pN0 versus cN0pN0 disease. Methods: A total of 1309 OCSCC patients with pN0 disease were included. Of them, 1019 and 290 cases had cN0pN0 and cN+pN0 disease, respectively. For comparison purposes, we also examined 799 patients with pN+disease (cN0pN+/cN+pN+, n = 239/560). Subgroup analysis was performed in a propensity score‐matched cohort with cN0pN0 and cN+pN0 disease (n = 284 each). Results: Compared with cN0pN0, patients with cN+pN0 had a higher prevalence of the following variables: betel chewing, pT3−4, depth ≥10 mm, perineural invasion, and treatment with surgery and adjuvant therapy. The prognosis of patients with cN+pN0 (mean: 52 nodes) and cN0pN0 (mean: 39 nodes) disease was similar both in the original cohort and after propensity score matching. However, the 5‐year outcomes were more favorable for cN+pN0/cN0pN0 compared with cN0pN+/cN+pN+ (local control, 88%/88%/83%/81%; neck control, 94%/93%/82%/76%; distant metastases, 4%/3%/13%/31%; disease‐free survival, 84%/83%/68%/52%; disease‐specific survival, 92%/92%/77%/57%; overall survival, 81%/82%/59%/42%; all p values <0.001; cN+pN0 versus cN0pN0, all p values >0.05). cN+pN0 disease (vs. cN0pN0) was not significantly associated with local control, neck control, distant metastases, and survivals either in univariable or multivariable analyses. Conclusions: Despite a higher risk factor burden, the prognosis of patients with cN+pN0 disease did not differ from that of cases with cN0pN0. The higher nodal yield and the more frequent use of adjuvant therapy in cN+pN0 disease may explain the lack of significant differences in terms of neck control compared with cN0pN0 disease. Methods: We sought to compare the prognostic impact of tumor differentiation with respect to adverse risk factors (RFs) identified by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines––including extranodal extension (ENE), positive/close margins, perineural invasion, lymphatic invasion, and vascular invasion––in patients with locally advanced oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC). Results: Between 1996 and 2018, 1179 consecutive patients with first primary pT3–4 OCSCC were included. A three‐level grading system was adopted––in which the final classification was assigned according to the most prevalent tumor grade. We identified 382/669/128 patients with well/moderately/poorly differentiated tumors, respectively. Compared with well/moderately differentiated tumors, poorly differentiated OCSCC had a higher prevalence of the following variables: female sex (4%/6%/11%), ENE, (14%/36%/61%), positive margins (0.5%/2%/4%), close margins (10%/14%/22%), perineural invasion (22%/50%/63%), lymphatic invasion (2%/9%/17%), vascular invasion (1%/4%/10%), and adjuvant therapy (64%/80%/87%). The 5‐year rates of patients with well/moderately/poorly differentiated OCSCC were as follows: local control (LC, 85%/82%/84%, p = 0.439), neck control (NC, 91%/83%/70%, p < 0.001), distant metastases (DM, 6%/18%/40%, p < 0.001), disease‐free survival (DFS, 78%/63%/46%, p < 0.001), disease‐specific survival (DSS, 85%/71%/49%, p < 0.001), and overall survival (OS, 68%/55%/39%, p < 0.001). Multivariable analysis identified the following variables as independent prognosticators for 5‐year outcomes: ENE (LC/NC/DM/DFS/DSS/OS), poorly differentiated tumors (NC/DM/DFS/DSS/OS), positive margins (LC/DFS), lymphatic invasion (DFS/DSS/OS), perineural invasion (DM), and age ≥65 years (OS). Conclusions: In addition to ENE, poor tumor differentiation was identified as the second most relevant adverse RF for patients with pT3–4 OCSCC. [Display omitted] Liver fibrosis is the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix due to chronic injuries, such as viral infection, alcohol abuse, high-fat diet, and toxins. Liver fibrosis is reversible before it progresses to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Type 2 diabetes significantly increases the risk of developing various complications including liver diseases. Abundant evidence suggests that type 2 diabetes and liver diseases are bidirectionally associated. Patients with type 2 diabetes experience more severe symptoms and accelerated progression of live diseases. Obesity and insulin resistance resulting from hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia are regarded as the two major risk factors that link type 2 diabetes and liver fibrosis. This review summarizes possible mechanisms of the association between type 2 diabetes and liver fibrosis. The cellular protein markers that can be used for diagnosis and therapy of type 2 diabetes-associated liver fibrosis are discussed. Background: Geriatric depression is a common but preventable psychiatric disorder; however, its association with specific sleep patterns remains unclear. Therefore, we examined the association of self-reported sleep duration and sleep timing with depressive symptoms in the older population.Methods: A total of 1068 older Taiwanese adults (52.7% women; 72.2 ± 5.7 y) responded to a telephone survey during 2019-2020. Self-reported data on sociodemographic characteristics, sleep duration, bedtime, wake-up time (adapted items from Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), and depressive symptoms (five-item Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression scale) were included. Generalized additive models were used to examine the nonlinear associations of sleep duration and midpoint sleep time (ie, the midpoint of bedtime and wake-up time) with depressive symptoms.Results: The means of sleep duration and midpoint sleep time in the participants were 6 h per night and 02:13 h, respectively. The results showed marked nonlinear associations of sleep patterns with depressive symptoms. Sleep duration shorter than 4 h per night was associated with a relatively higher level of depressive symptoms, with the highest risk (coefficient = 3.41; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.12, 4.70) while sleeping 2.06 h per night. The midpoint sleep time was positively associated with depressive symptom scores after 01:00 h.Conclusions: The results showed that sleep duration and fitting sleep timing were nonlinearly associated with the risks of depressive symptoms in the general older adult population. These findings have implications for targeting nonpharmacological approaches by tackling modifiable behaviors, such as adequate sleep duration and timing, with decreased risks of depressive symptoms in the older adult population. Background: Biallelic pathogenic variants in USH2A lead to Usher syndrome or non-syndromic retinitis pigmentosa, and shown to have geographical and ethnical distribution in previous studies. This study provided a deeper understanding of the detailed clinical features using multimodal imaging, genetic spectrum, and genotype–phenotype correlations of USH2A-related retinal dystrophies in Taiwan. Results: In our cohort, the mean age at first visit was 47.66 ± 13.54 years, and the mean age at symptom onset, which was referred to the onset of nyctalopia and/or visual field constriction, was 31.21 ± 15.24 years. Among the variants identified, 23 (50%) were missense, 10 (22%) were splicing variants, 8 (17%) were nonsense, and 5 (11%) were frameshift mutations. The most predominant variant was c.2802T>G, which accounted for 21% of patients, and was located in exon 13. Patients with truncated alleles had significantly earlier symptom onset and seemly poorer disease progression regarding visual acuity, ellipsoid zone line length, and hypofluorescent lesions in the macula than those who had the complete gene. However, the clinical presentation revealed similar progression between patients with and without the c.2802T>G variant. During long-term follow-up, the patients had different ellipsoid zone line progression rates and were almost evenly distributed in the fast, moderate, and slow progression subgroups. Although a younger onset age and a smaller baseline intact macular area was observed in the fast progression subgroup, the results showed no significant difference. Conclusions: This is the first cohort study to provide detailed genetic and longitudinal clinical analyses of patients with USH2A-related retinal dystrophies in Taiwan. The mutated allele frequency in exon 13 was high in Taiwan due to the predominant c.2802T>G variant. Moreover, truncated variants greatly impacted disease progression and determined the length of therapeutic windows. Objectives: This study investigates the relationship between multidisciplinary team care (MDTC) and patient completion of their treatment regimen for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study in patients diagnosed with OSCC in Taiwan from 1 January 2016 to 30 June 2018 using a linked cancer registry database. Results: Of the 969 OSCC MDTC patients in the study cohort, 6.3% reported incomplete treatment, with 1.3% interrupting ongoing treatment and 5.0% terminating definitive treatment. Patients who had advanced‐stage disease, experienced primary cancer recurrence or a secondary cancer, or were treated with surgery combined with chemotherapy, radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy were more likely to terminate treatment before completion. The major reasons for interruption of ongoing treatment included 'patient or their family considered the patient to be in poor physical condition' and 'difficulty enduring physical discomfort caused by treatment'. The major reason for termination of definitive treatment was 'patient or their families or friends experienced negative treatment effects and worried about the side‐effects of treatment'. Conclusion: Advanced‐stage cancer, recurrence or secondary cancer, and surgery combined with chemotherapy, radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy negatively affected treatment completion. Background: Suicides by carbon monoxide poisoning from burning charcoal increased markedly and contributed to a rise in overall suicides in Taiwan in the early 2000s. A previous study indicated short-term effectiveness on reducing suicides of a charcoal restriction programme, which involved voluntary actions from large chain retail stores to move charcoal bags from open shelves to locked cabinets starting from 1st May 2012, in New Taipei City, Taiwan. We investigated the longer-term effect of this programme.Methods: We calculated quarterly age-standardised charcoal-burning and overall suicide rates in New Taipei City and two comparison cities in 2007-2017. Controlled interrupted time-series analysis was used to examine the effect of the charcoal restriction programme.Results: There was no difference between the intervention and comparison cities in step changes in the rates (per 100,000) of charcoal-burning suicide (intervention minus comparison = -0.336, 95% confidence interval -1.173 to 0.502) and overall suicide (-0.270, -1.844 to 1.303) after the intervention, or changes in trends (slopes) in charcoal-burning suicide rates (0.007, -0.055 to 0.069) and overall suicide rates (0.049, -0.138 to 0.236) before and after the intervention.Limitations: There was no legislative requirement to enforce the charcoal restriction. The programme was also restricted to a subset of retail stores.Conclusion: The charcoal restriction programme in New Taipei City showed no effect on reducing charcoal-burning or overall suicides in the five years after its implementation. Future means restriction strategies for suicide prevention should optimise the programme sustainability, ensure the comprehensive means restriction, and monitor the long-term intervention effectiveness. In vivo tissue deposition of fibrillar protein aggregates is the cause of several degenerative diseases. Evidence suggests that interfering with the pathology-associated amyloid fibrillogenesis by inhibitory molecules is envisaged as the primary therapeutic strategy. Amyloid fibril formation of proteins has been demonstrated to be influenced by nanoparticles/nanomaterials. As compared with their molecular form counterpart, this work examined the effect of sucrose-terminated nanoparticles on the in vitro amyloid fibrillogenesis and structural properties of β-lactoglobulin at pH 2.0 and 80 °C. ThT binding and electron microscopy results demonstrated that sucrose-terminated nanoparticles were able to suppress β-lactoglobulin fibrillogenesis in a concentration-dependent fashion. Importantly, sucrose-terminated nanoparticles showed better β-lactoglobulin fibril-inhibiting ability than sucrose molecules. ANS fluorescence and right-angle light scattering results showed reduced solvent exposure and decreased aggregation, respectively, in the β-lactoglobulin samples upon treatment with sucrose-terminated nanoparticles. Moreover, fluorescence quenching analyses revealed that the static quenching mechanism and formation of a non-fluorescent fluorophore–nanoparticle complex are involved in the nanoparticle-β-lactoglobulin interaction. We believe that the results from this study may suggest that the nanoparticle form of biocompatible sugar-related osmolytes may serve as effective inhibiting/suppressing agents toward protein fibrillogenesis. This work investigates a low-temperature and high-pressure (LTHP) hydrogen treatment in Si-channel and SiGe-channel metal–oxide–semiconductor capacitors (MOSCAPs). The LTHP hydrogen treatment can repair dangling bonds in the SiO2/Si and SiO2/SiGe interfaces to enhance device performance. Additional parameters of the treatment, including treatment pressure and time, are also investigated to better understand the reaction mechanisms, which further proves the effectiveness and potential of this supercritical fluid (SCF)-based treatment. In addition, this treatment will not damage the front structure and materials due to the relatively low process temperature (120 °C). Therefore, this treatment can be a nondestructive postannealing process. The results of extracting interface defect density (Dit) by the conductance method show that there is an ~51% reduction in the defect density after this posttreatment, a significant decrease. The objective of this study was to demonstrate that the clay strength can be improved significantly over the entire sample during electroosmosis simultaneously with the injection of 0.75 M CaCl2 solution for 72 h, then 1.5 M KOH solution for 48 h, then Na2SiO3 solution for 72 h, and then injection of deionized water for 168 h. Such an improvement was significant in terms of the improvement strength and improvement area as compared with the previous studies in the literature that the clay strength was improved only near the anode or cathode while the areas between the electrodes remain weak. The mechanism of the improvement was also studied by examining the physical and chemical properties of the treated clay at each phase of treatment. The cone resistance, water content, pH value, and the Ca2+ concentration were measured at each phase. Results also indicated that the quality of the Na2SiO3 solution might degrade in the anode compartment during treatment because of electrolysis of water. However, it was found that such a degradation was not very serious, which would not influence the test results significantly. For simplification, it may not be necessary to replace the possible degraded Na2SiO3 solution with the fresh one. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Followed the proposed ECT procedure that was the injection of 0.75 M CaCl2 solution for 72 h, then 1.5 M KOH solution for 48 h, then sodium silicate solution for 72 h and then deionized water for 168 h, the clay strength can be improved from anode to cathode entirely. To further improve the clay strength, curing the sample for different periods and applying electric field over the sample were studied. The cone resistance, water content, pH value, Ca2+ concentration and the XRD pattern were tested or analyzed in each test. Results show that injection of deionized water was a key phase to produce a full improvement of the treated clay, which cannot be replaced by the application of an electric field only and without injecting water. Curing the treated clay after injecting deionized water can yield a higher clay strength in the cathode area significantly due to pozzolanic reaction but produce a lower clay strength in the anode area because the formed NaOH decomposed the gel structure of the sodium silicate solution. To obtain a better strength after injection of deionized water for 168 h, the treated clay had to be cured for about 28 days, along with a dry anode compartment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The evidence for adjuvant therapy of oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) in National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines is derived from patients with head and neck cancer. Here, we examined whether adjuvant therapy should be guided by a detailed analysis of pathologic risk factors in patients with pure OCSCC.Methods and Materials: Between 2004 and 2016, we retrospectively reviewed 1200 consecutive patients with OCSCC who underwent radical surgery and neck dissection in the Chang-Gung Memorial Hospital (CGMH). Patients were divided into 3 prognostic groups. High-risk patients were those with extranodal extension (ENE) and/or positive margins (ENE/margins+, n = 267). Intermediate-risk patients were further divided into 3 subgroups: (1) patients in whom adjuvant therapy was indicated according to the CGMH but not the NCCN guidelines (NCCN[-]/CGMH[+], n = 14); (2) patients in whom adjuvant therapy was indicated by the NCCN but not the CGMH guidelines (NCCN[+]/CGMH[-], n = 160); and (3) patients in whom adjuvant therapy was indicated according to both guidelines (NCCN[+]/CGMH[+], n = 411). Low-risk patients were those for whom adjuvant therapy was not suggested in light of either guideline (NCCN[-]/CGMH[-], n = 348).Results: According to NCCN guidelines, postoperative adjuvant therapy was indicated in 69.8% of the participants. However, only 57.7% of patients were in need of adjuvant therapy by CGMH guidelines. The following 5-year outcomes were observed in the NCCN(-)/CGMH(-), NCCN(-)/CGMH(+), NCCN(+)/CGMH(-), NCCN(+)/CGMH(+), and ENE/margins+ subgroups: locoregional control, 88%/70%/83%/79%/68%, P < .001 (NCCN[+]/CGMH[-] vs NCCN[+]/CGMH[+], P = .576); distant metastases, 2%/7%/2%/9%/36%, P < .001 (NCCN[+]/CGMH[-] vs NCCN[+]/CGMH[+], P = .003); disease-specific survival, 97%/86%/94%/84%/56%, P < .001 (NCCN[+]/CGMH[-] vs NCCN[+]/CGMH[+], P < .001); and overall survival, 92%/86%/87%/68%/42%, P < .001 (NCCN[+]/CGMH[-] vs NCCN[+]/CGMH[+], P < .001), respectively.Conclusions: Patients in the NCCN(+)/CGMH(-) subgroup, 28% (160/571[160 + 411]) of NCCN intermediate-risk patients, had more favorable 5-year disease-specific and overall survival (94% and 87%) than the NCCN(+)/CGMH(+) subgroup. The former are unlikely to derive clinical benefits from NCCN guidelines. Purpose: Concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) is one of the standard treatments for patients with advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). However, CCRT may lead to decreased quality of life (QoL) and treatment compliance. This study aimed to determine the effects of PG2 (Astragalus polysaccharides) injection on CCRT-associated adverse events (AEs) and patients' compliance with the CCRT course. Methods: In this phase II double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial, PG2 injection (sterile powder form) or placebo was administrated three times per week in parallel with CCRT to patients with HNSCC. The chemotherapy regimen included 50 mg/m2 cisplatin every 2 weeks with daily tegafur–uracil (300 mg/m2) and leucovorin (60 mg/day). Results: The study was terminated prematurely due to the successful launch of a newly formulated PG2 injection (lyophilized form). A total of 17 patients were enrolled. The baseline demographics and therapeutic compliance were comparable between the CCRT/PG2 and CCRT/placebo groups. During CCRT, severe treatment-associated AEs were less frequent in the CCRT/PG2 group than in the CCRT/placebo group. Furthermore, less QoL fluctuations from the baseline during CCRT were noted in the CCRT/PG2 group than in the CCRT/placebo group, with a significant difference in the pain, appetite loss, and social eating behavior. The tumor response, disease-specific survival and overall survival did not differ between the two groups. Conclusion: This preliminary study demonstrated PG2 injection exhibited an excellent safety profile, and has potential in ameliorating the deterioration in QoL and the AEs associated with active anticancer treatment among patients with advanced pharyngeal or laryngeal HNSCC under CCRT. Background: Environmental lead exposure is a known risk factor of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in animal and human epidemiological studies of adults, but limited research has been conducted in young populations. Moreover, the association between lead level and common carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) has never been documented.Design: and Participants: In this study, 738 subjects were recruited from a cohort of Taiwanese adolescents and young adults to study the relationship between lead levels in urine and CVD risk factors, metabolic syndrome (MS) and CIMT.Results: The geometric mean of the urine lead level was 1.50 μg/g creatinine. We found a significant positive association between urine lead levels and CVD risk factors, including diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), as well as markers of glucose homeostasis, such as serum glucose, serum insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), homeostasis model assessment of β-cell function (HOMA-β), body mass index (BMI) z score, and CIMT. Overall, increased urine lead concentrations were positively correlated with the prevalence of MS, specifically the criteria of waist/BMI and serum HDL-C. The relationship between urine lead levels and CIMT remained unchanged in all subgroups.Conclusion: In this study, we found that increased urinary levels of lead were positively associated with CVD risk factors, CIMT, and MS in this cohort. Protein hydrogels are water-rich structure of cross-linked protein networks. The preparation of dry gels is conceptually simple. However, reports on innovative use of dry protein hydrogels are scarce, possibly because water removal would diminish intended properties. Here, an oil-like thiol-organosilane is proposed as a protein hydrogel-promoting agent that mediates the formation of hydrophobic composite gel networks with promising properties upon drying. 3-Mercaptopropyltrimethoxylsilane (MPTMS) was used to transform aqueous albumin solutions into hydrogels. The gelation conditions were systematically investigated and optimized by varying various parameters, including temperature, pH, and the concentrations of MPTMS, albumin, and phosphate. The hydrogels were freeze-dried to obtain dry gel monoliths. The morphology of gel structure was evaluated using FE-SEM. The following properties of the dry monoliths were further evaluated: water uptake, floatability, drug loading and release, water contact angles, bulk densities, and oil adsorption. Mechanistic investigation included FTIR and fluorescence quenching determinations, and the study of emulsion properties. An unprecedented protein-organosilane composite hydrogel was synthesized in a one-step reaction, at neutral pH and ambient conditions. Freeze-dried gel monoliths exhibited excellent hydrophobicity and floatability (immediate floating and lasting for >7 days on water). Introduction: Previous investigations on factors associated with depression were highly focused on personal characteristics and health behaviors; however, few studies used an ecological perspective on the issue, much less on sex differences. This study examined the factors associated with depression, including any sex differences. Methods: A total of 1025 Taiwanese adults older than 65 years were recruited. Their personal demographics, lifestyle behaviors, and perceived environmental factors were obtained through a telephone-based survey. The multiple factors associated with depression in older adults were examined using logistic regression analyses. Results: Fully logistic regression analyses revealed that poor self-rated health (odds ratio =2.54) was correlated with a greater likelihood of depression. Aside from poor self-rated health, being older, sufficient leisure time spent in walking, and perceptions of a safe environment were associated with lower risks of depression in older men, whereas having hypertension and excessive TV viewing were associated with higher risks of depression in older women. Conclusion: Apart from self-rated health, sex differences in the associations of factors such as leisure-time walking, TV watching, and safe traffic environment with depression were observed among older adults. Phase angle (PhA) is an indicator of cellular health and is positively associated with overall physical activity (PA). However, varied associations between different intensities of PA and PhA by body segment in older populations remain unexplored. We investigated the associations between overall and different intensities of PA and upper-, lower-, and whole-body PhA in older adults. Overall exposure to light-intensity (LPA), moderate-intensity (MPA), and vigorous-intensity physical activity (VPA) was assessed using a triaxial accelerometer (GT3X + , ActiGraph). The outcome variables were upper-, lower-, and whole-body PhA measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis (MC-780MA, TANITA). Multiple linear regression helped examine the associations between the exposure and outcome variables after adjusting for age, gender, body mass index, and accelerometer wear time. A cross-sectional analysis involved 166 community-dwelling older participants (mean age = 72.1 ± 5.5 years; 78.3% women). Overall PA was associated with larger upper- (B: 0.057, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.018–0.095) and whole-body PhA (B: 0.044, 95% CI 0.006–0.081). LPA was associated with larger upper-body PhA (B: 0.059, 95% CI 0.017–0.101), and MPA was associated with larger lower- (B: 0.273, 95% CI 0.128–0.419) and whole-body PhA (B: 0.141, 95% CI 0.002–0.280). VPA and PhA were not associated. Future interventions targeting PhA in older adults should consider the differential impact of PA intensity on various body segments of the PhA. Residents of lower socioeconomic status (SES) areas are at a higher risk of overweight/obesity than those from higher SES areas. Built environment attributes may mitigate such inequalities. This systematic review synthesised findings of studies examining built environment attributes as potential moderators of the associations between area-level SES and overweight/obesity in adults. From five databases, nine eligible studies were identified. The SES-overweight/obesity relationship was stronger in inner areas and suburbs of large cities, while it was weaker in more rural areas. Two studies examined walkability and reported contrasting findings: no moderation in one and marginally significant moderation (less inequality in higher walkability areas) in the other. No evidence of moderation was found for street connectivity, population density, the food environment, access to physical activity facilities and several perceived environmental attributes. Further research is needed on other built environment attributes (e.g., access to, quantity and quality of green spaces, active transport features), and ideally using prospective study designs and objective makers of adiposity. • We reviewed studies on environmental moderation of area-level SES-obesity association. • Area SES-obesity association was stronger in larger cities and weaker in rural areas. • Findings for the role of walkability were mixed. • No moderation was found for food environment and physical activity facilities. • Studies need to assess potential moderation by greenspace and transport features. Abstract More than half of the world's population now lives in urban areas. Understanding the spatial distribution of suicide in these settings may inform prevention. Previous analyses of the spatial distribution of suicide in cities have largely been conducted in Western nations. We investigated the spatial pattern of suicide and factors associated with its spatial distribution in Taipei City, Taiwan. We estimated smoothed standardized mortality ratios for overall suicide and suicide by sex/age group across 432 neighborhoods (mean population size: 5500) in Taipei City (2004–2010) using Bayesian hierarchical models. A range of area-level characteristics including socioeconomic deprivation, social fragmentation, income inequality, and linking social capital were investigated for their associations with suicide mortality. Overall suicide rates were below average in the city center, whereas above average rates were found in some suburbs. The cartogram highlighted the concentration of suicide burden in one western area of the city. Male suicides demonstrated generally similar spatial patterning across age groups, while the geographic distribution of female suicides differed by age. After adjusting for other variables, two area characteristics were found to be associated with area suicide rates: the proportion of divorced/separated adults (rate ratio [RR] per one standard deviation increase = 1.08, 95% confidence interval 1.01–1.16), an indicator of social fragmentation; and median household income (RR = 0.80, 0.73–0.86), an indicator of socioeconomic deprivation. There was a 1.8-fold difference in suicide rates between neighborhood quintiles with the lowest and the highest median household income, with middle-aged males showing the largest gradient (3.2-fold difference). The geography of suicide in Taipei City showed spatial patterning and socioeconomic correlates distinct from cities in Western nations. There is a need for future research to better understand the correlates of change in the geographic distribution of suicide throughout the process of urban development. Objective: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) use in prostate cancer (PCa) patients has been reported to exacerbate the course of psoriasis. We aimed to assess the impact of ADT on the subsequent risk of psoriasis.Methods: We utilized data from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan between 1996 and 2013. In total, 17,168 patients with PCa were identified; 5,141 ADT patients comprised the study group with 5,141 matched non-ADT controls. We used 1:1 propensity score-matched analysis. The demographic characteristics and comorbidities of the patients were analyzed; Cox proportional hazards regression was used to calculate the HRs for the risk of psoriasis.Results: Eighty-nine (0.87%) patients with newly diagnosed psoriasis were identified. Compared with non-ADT patients, ADT patients had similar risk of subsequent psoriasis with an HR of 0.95 (95% CI 0.63-1.45; P=0.816). However, a higher risk of psoriasis was observed in angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors patients (adjusted HR 2.14, 95% CI 1.09-4.20; P<0.05).Conclusion: ADT use did not increase risk of psoriasis in patients with PCa. A mixed organosilane system for simultaneous formation of organosilica nanoparticles has been systematically studied for loading of various compounds with a wide range of log P values. The molecule-entrapping system was understood by investigating the effects of adjusting various experimental parameters on particle formation and molecule entrapment. Particularly, rhodamine 6 G (R6G) loaded colloidal particles were prepared and characterised in detail. The results show that whereas most molecules had entrapment efficiency (EE%) in the range of 20-80%, R6G exhibited near 100% efficiency. Moreover, the colloidal system can be tuned to incorporate R6G with the extent of entrapment spanning at least 2 orders of magnitude (i.e. from 0.04 to 4 mg) and a maximum EE% of 98%. In conclusion, the study demonstrates the promise of the proposed mixed organosilane system in forming colloidal particles containing multiple functional groups with selective loading of highly hydrophobic molecules. This study investigated associations of perceived environmental factors with leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and screen time (ST) among older adults. A cross-sectional study was conducted by administering computer-assisted telephone interviews to 1028 older Taiwanese adults in November 2016. Data on personal factors, perceived environmental factors, LTPA, and ST were included. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to examine associations of environmental perception with LTPA and ST by using logistic regression analyses. The results showed that after adjusting for potential confounders, older adults who perceived their neighborhood with good access to shops (AS) and to public transportation (AT) were more likely to have sufficient LTPA (AS: OR = 1.64, 95% CI: 1.16-2.32; AT: OR = 1.43; 95% CI, 1.00-2.03) and less likely to have excessive ST (AS: OR = 0.70; 95% CI: 0.50-0.97; AT: OR = 0.64; 95% CI: 0.46-0.90). Different perceived environmental factors were also associated with LTPA and ST, respectively. This study highlights environment perception as a crucial factor for LTPA and ST. These findings suggest that policy makers and physical activity intervention designers should develop both common and individual environmental strategies to improve and increase awareness of the neighborhood environment to promote LTPA and reduce ST among older adults. This research investigates the mechanism of abnormal transconductance (Gm) and abnormal charge pumping current (I CP ) in body-tied partially-depleted silicon-on-insulator n-channel metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors. The I CP second hump region increases with channel length, yet is not affected by channel width. The cross-sectional view of the L-gate structure along the width direction demonstrates that a part of the poly gate area near the body contact is covered by a P + implant, inducing a parasitic channel under the P + poly gate. Both scabies and bipolar disorder (BD) are common and troublesome disorders. There are several similarities in both diseases: pruritus, a higher prevalence in crowded environments, and cytokine-mediated inflammatory processes in the pathophysiology. We conducted this nationwide population-based study to investigate the possible relationship between scabies and BD. Based on the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) of Taiwan, a total of 7096 patients with scabies were identified as a study group and 28,375 matched patients as a control. We tracked the patients in both groups for a 7-year period to identify those newly diagnosed with BD. The demographic characteristics and comorbidities of the patients were analyzed, and Cox proportional hazard regressions were performed to calculate the hazard ratio (HR) of BD. Of the 35,471 patients in this study, 183 (0.5%) patients with newly diagnosed BD were identified, with 58 (0.8%) from the scabies group and 125 (0.4%) from the control group. The patients with scabies had a higher risk of subsequent BD, with a crude hazard ratio of 1.86 and an adjusted hazard ratio of 1.55 (95% confidence interval: 1.12–2.09, P < 0.05). We aimed to compare the overall survival ( OS) of patients with bone metastases ( BM) from solid tumors after standard-dose radiotherapy ([ RT]; 30 Gy administered in 10 fractions; EQD2Gy = 32.5 Gy) and dose-escalated RT (EQD2Gy > 32.5 Gy). We retrospectively reviewed the clinical charts of 1795 patients (median age, 62.3 years; age range, 18-96 years) with BM from solid tumors who were referred for RT to our institute between 2000 and 2013. These patients were assigned to the standard-dose ( n = 1125; 63%) and dose-escalated ( n = 670; 37%) RT groups. OS, estimated as the duration between the first RT session and death, served as the main outcome measure. The dose-escalated RT group had a significantly better OS than the standard-dose RT group ( P = 0.000). After allowing potential confounders in multivariate analysis, the RT dose retained its independent association with OS (hazard ratio [ HR], 0.837; 95% confidence interval [ CI], 0.753-0.929, P = 0.001). After propensity score matching of the baseline characteristics of both groups, RT dose retained its independent association with OS ( HR, 0.887; 95% CI, 0.737-0.951; P = 0.011) on multivariate analysis. Dose-escalated RT exerted more favorable effects on OS in patients with non-lung cancer, those without multiple metastases, those without symptoms, and those with favorable prognosis. Dose-escalated RT was significantly associated with better OS in patients with BM from solid malignancies, particularly among those with non-lung cancer, those without multiple metastases, those without symptoms, and those with favorable prognosis. Background: Although research has shown that numerous perceived environmental factors are supportive of physical activity, little is known about their associations with sedentary transport in motorcycle-oriented countries. This study examined the association between perceptions of Taiwan's environmental factors and urban adults' motorcycle use.Methods: Cross-sectional data from 1003 Taiwanese adults aged 20-64 years from three urban cities were collected through telephonic surveys in 2015. Data on motorcycle use, sociodemographic variables, and perceived environmental attributes were obtained. Logistic regression analyses were performed.Results: In Model 1, adults who perceived favorable access to public transport and destinations, presence of sidewalks, and safety from crimes at night were less likely to use motorcycles. In Model 2, in which potential covariates were additionally adjusted for, the same four environmental attributes (perceived favorable access to public transport and destinations, presence of sidewalks, and safety from crimes at night; odds ratio [OR] = 0.46, 0.65, 0.63, 0.64, respectively) were significantly associated with motorcycle use.Conclusion: The investigated perceived environmental factors, which have previously been associated with facilitating active transportation, discourage sedentary modes of transport, such as motorized vehicles. The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent control measures may increase population suicide risk.1 The 2003 Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak is amongst previous infectious diseases epidemics most similar to the COVID-19 pandemic, as both were caused by coronaviruses and had a large-scale impact in affected countries.2 We investigated the impact of the SARS outbreak on suicide rates in Taiwan and Hong Kong, two regions most affected by the SARS epidemic,2 to inform concerns about the current pandemic's impact on suicide. Negative binomial regression models were used to estimate the rate ratios (RRs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for suicide rates during the SARS epidemic period (March-June 2003) and post-epidemic period (July-December 2003), relative to that expected based on pre-epidemic trends (January 1993-February 2003). The greater impact of the SARS epidemic on suicide rates was in parallel to higher SARS case and mortality rates and the epidemic's greater economic impacts in Hong Kong than in Taiwan. This study systematically reviewed the relevant studies and summarized the associations of objective measures of residential neighborhood built-environment attributes with sedentary time among adults. Published studies were obtained from PubMed and Scopus, restricting to those published in English language peer-reviewed journals to Oct. 2021. There were nine studies and 48 instances of estimated associations. Most instances showed no statistical-significant associations; by contrast, few instances showed that adults living in a neighborhood characterized by a high density of local destinations and connected intersections were associated with less sedentary time. The findings suggest that a high density of destinations and street intersections around residence may provide opportunities to transfer and access to services, thus reducing the sedentary time. Future research strengthening the research design and measurements are needed to investigate the potential explanations of the associations between residential neighborhood built environments and sedentary time in adults.
