The neutral holmium(III) oxalate octadecahydrate {[Ho 2 (ox) 3 (H 2 O) 6 ]·12H 2 O} n of mixed hexagonal/decagonal (6 3 ·10 3 ) 3D net topology shows important changes in the magnetocaloric efficiency upon dehydration/rehydration by heating and water vapor exposition to give the holmium(III) oxalate decahydrate {[Ho 2 (ox) 3 (H 2 O) 6 ]·4H 2 O} n of hexagonal (6 3 ) 2D net topology through the intermediacy of the elusive amorphous anhydrous compound {Ho 2 (ox) 3 } n .

Pyridoxine (pyr) is a versatile molecule that forms part of the family of B vitamins. It is used to treat and prevent vitamin B 6 deficiency and certain types of metabolic disorders. Moreover, the pyridoxine molecule has been investigated as a suitable ligand toward metal ions. Nevertheless, the study of the magnetic properties of metal complexes containing lanthanide(III) ions and this biomolecule is unexplored. We have synthesized and characterized a novel pyridoxine-based Gd III complex of formula [Gd III (pyr) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ]Cl 3 · 2 H 2 O ( 1 ) [pyr = pyridoxine]. 1 crystallizes in the triclinic system and space group P ī. In its crystal packing, cationic [Gd(pyr) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ] 3+ entities are connected through H-bonding interactions involving non-coordinating water molecules and chloride anions. In addition, Hirshfeld surfaces of 1 were calculated to further investigate their intermolecular interactions in the crystal lattice. Our investigation of the magnetic properties of 1 , through ac magnetic susceptibility measurements, reveals the occurrence of a slow relaxation in magnetization in this mononuclear Gd III complex, indicating an unusual single-ion magnet (SIM) behavior for this pseudo-isotropic metal ion at very low temperatures. We also studied the relaxometric properties of 1 , as a potential contrast agent for high-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), from solutions of 1 prepared in physiological serum (0.0-3.2 mM range) and measured at 3 T on a clinical MRI scanner. The values of relaxivity obtained for 1 are larger than those of some commercial MRI contrast agents based on mononuclear Gd III systems.

We have prepared and characterized two Ru(III) compounds based on the 2,2'-biimidazole (H 2 biim) ligand, namely, a single complex of formula cis-[RuCl 2 (H 2 biim) 2 ]Cl·4H 2 O ( 1 ) and a racemic mixture of formula {cis-[RuCl 2 (H 2 biim) 2 ]Cl} 2 ·4H 2 O ( 2 ), which contains 50% of Ru(III) complex 1 . Both compounds crystallize in the monoclinic system with space groups C 2 and P 2 1 for 1 and 2 , respectively. These complexes exhibit the metal ion bonded to four nitrogen atoms from two H 2 biim molecules and two chloride ions, which balance part of the positive charges in a distorted octahedral geometry. Significant differences are observed in their crystal packing, which leads to the observation of differences in their respective magnetic behaviors. Despite having imidazole rings in both compounds, π-π stacking interactions occur only in the crystal structure of 2 , and the shortest intermolecular Ru···Ru separation in 2 is consequently shorter than that in 1 . Variable-temperature dc magnetic susceptibility measurements performed on polycrystalline samples of 1 and 2 reveal different magnetic behaviors at low temperatures: while 1 behaves pretty much as a magnetically isolated mononuclear Ru(III) complex with S = 1/2, 2 exhibits the behavior of an antiferromagnetically coupled system with S = 0 and a maximum in the magnetic susceptibility curve at approximately 3.0 K.

Highly anisotropic single-molecule magnets (SMMs) have attracted much interest in the field of molecular magnetism because of their spin features and potential technological applications. Additionally, a great effort has been devoted to the functionalization of such molecule-based systems which are made with ligands containing functional groups suitable to connect SMMs to junction devices or to perform their grafting on surfaces of different substrates. We have synthesized and characterized two lipoic acid-functionalized and oxime-based Mn(III) compounds, of formula [Mn 6 (μ 3 -O) 2 (H 2 N-sao) 6 (lip) 2 (MeOH) 6 ][Mn 6 (μ 3 -O) 2 (H 2 N-sao) 6 (cnph) 2 (MeOH) 6 ]}·10MeOH ( 1 ) and [Mn 6 (μ 3 -O) 2 (H 2 N-sao) 6 (lip) 2 (EtOH) 6 ]·EtOH·2H 2 O ( 2 ) [H 2 N-saoH 2 = salicylamidoxime, lip = lipoate anion, cnph = 2-cyanophenolate anion]. Compound 1 crystallizes in the space group P ī of the triclinic system and 2 crystallizes in the space group C2/c of the monoclinic system. In the crystal, neighboring Mn 6 entities are linked using non-coordinating solvent molecules, which are H-bonded to N atoms of -NH 2 groups of amidoxime ligand. In addition, Hirshfeld surfaces of 1 and 2 were calculated to study the variety of intermolecular interactions and the different levels of importance that take place in their crystal lattice; this type of computed study is the first time performed on Mn 6 complexes. The study of the magnetic properties of 1 and 2 through dc magnetic susceptibility measurements reveals the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange couplings between the Mn(III) metal ions in both compounds, the latter being the predominant magnetic interaction. A spin S = 4 value of the ground state was obtained using isotropic simulations of the experimental magnetic susceptibility data for both 1 and 2 . Ac magnetic susceptibility measurements show features typical of slow relaxation of the magnetization in 1 and 2 , which indicate that SMM behavior takes place in both compounds.

Ruthenium compounds have demonstrated promising activity in different cancer types, overcoming several limitations of platinum-based drugs, yet their global structure-activity is still under debate. We analyzed the activity of Runat-BI, a racemic Ru(III) compound, and of one of its isomers in eight tumor cell lines of breast, colon and gastric cancer as well as in a non-tumoral control. Runat-BI was prepared with 2,2'-biimidazole and dissolved in polyethylene glycol. We performed assays of time- and dose-dependent viability, migration, proliferation, and expression of pro- and antiapoptotic genes. Moreover, we studied the growth rate and cell doubling time to correlate it with the apoptotic effect of Runat-BI. As a racemic mixture, Runat-BI caused a significant reduction in the viability and migration of three cancer cell lines from colon, gastric and breast cancer, all of which displayed fast proliferation rates. This compound also demonstrated selectivity between tumor and non-tumor lines and increased proapoptotic gene expression. However, the isolated isomer did not show any effect. Racemic Runat-BI is a potential drug candidate for treatment of highly aggressive tumors. Further studies should be addressed at evaluating the role of the other isomer, for a more precise understanding of its antitumoral potential and mechanism of action.

Metal complexes based on purine nucleobases can be a very useful tool in the diagnosis and treatment of some diseases as well as in other biomedical applications. We have prepared and characterized a novel dinuclear ruthenium(III) complex based on the nucleobase adenine of formula [{Ru(μ-Cl)(μ-Hade)} 2 Cl 4 ]Cl 2 ·2H 2 O (1) [Hade = protonated adenine]. Complex 1 was characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX), magnetometer (SQUID) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) techniques. The crystal structure of 1 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic system with space group P2 1 /n. Each ruthenium(III) ion is six-coordinate and bonded to four Cl atoms [the average value of the Ru III -Cl bonds lengths is ca. 2.329(1) Å] and two N atoms (N3 and N9) from two adenine molecules, the N1 atom being protonated in both of them. The anticancer activity was evaluated through cell viability assays performed on a colon cancer (HCT116) and a gastric cancer cell lines (AGS), 1 showing an incipient anticancer effect on the AGS cell line at the highest concentration used in the study., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors. Paramagnetic complexes that possess magnetically switchable properties show promise in a number of applications. A significantly underdeveloped approach is the use of metallocages, whose magnetic properties can be modulated through host-guest chemistry. Here we show such an example that utilises a simple [Cu II 2 L 4 ] 4+ lantern complex. Magnetic susceptibility and magnetisation data shows an absence of exchange in the presence of the diamagnetic guest triflate. However, replacement of the bound triflate by ReBr 6 2- switches on antiferomagnetic exchange between the Cu and Re ions, leading to an S = 1/2 ground state for the non-covalent complex [ReBr 6 2- ⊂Cu II 2 L 4 ] 2+ . Comparison of this complex to a "control" palladium-cage host-guest complex, [ReBr 6 2- ⊂Pd II 2 L 4 ] 2+ , shows that the encapsulated ReBr 6 2- anions retain the same magnetic anisotropy as in the free salt. Theoretically calculated spin-Hamiltonian parameters are in close agreement with experiment. Spin density analysis shows the mode of interaction between the Cu II and Re IV centres is through the Re-Br⋯Cu pathway, primarily mediated through the Cu(d x 2 - y 2 )|Br sp |Re(d yz ) interaction. This is further supported by overlap integral calculations between singly occupied molecular orbitals (SOMOs) of the paramagnetic ions and natural bonding orbitals analysis where considerable donor-to-acceptor interactions are observed between hybrid 4s4p orbitals of the Br ions and the empty 4s and 4p orbitals of the Cu ions.

By using the iridium(IV) complex (NBu 4 ) 2 [IrBr 6 ] (1) as a metalloligand towards a Cu(II) metal ion, three novel Ir(IV) one-dimensional (1D) compounds of formula {IrBr 5 (μ-Br)Cu(Meim) 4 } n (2), {IrBr 5 (μ-Br)Cu(Viim) 4 } n (3) and {IrBr 5 (μ-Br)Cu(Buim) 4 } n (4), [Meim = 1-methylimidazole; Viim = 1-vinylimidazole; Buim = 1-butylimidazole] have been prepared and structurally and magnetically characterised. Compounds 2, 3 and 4 crystallise in the triclinic, monoclinic and orthorhombic crystal systems with space groups P 1̄, C 2/ c and Pccn , respectively. Each Ir(IV) ion in 1-4 is six-coordinate and bonded to six bromide ions in a quasi regular octahedral geometry. In compounds 2-4, the Cu II ion shows an axially elongated octahedron with four N atoms, from four monodentate imidazole derivative ligands, that form the equatorial plane and two bromide ions that occupy the axial positions. Cu(II) and Ir(IV) ions are linked through bridging bromide anions generating Ir(IV)-Cu(II) chains [with intrachain Cu(II)⋯Ir(IV) distances covering the range of ca. 5.10-5.42 Å]. In the crystal lattice of 2 and 3 are observed significant intermolecular Ir-Br⋯Br-Ir contacts and π⋯Br interactions, which organize arrangements that contribute to stabilizing the crystal structure of these Ir(IV)-based compounds. DC magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that 1 displays magnetic behaviour typical of noninteracting mononuclear centres with S = 1/2. Besides, antiferromagnetic behaviour (2 and 3) and ferromagnetic (4) exchange coupling occur between the Cu(II) and Ir(IV) metal ions in the one-dimensional bromo-bridged compounds 2-4. Moreover, the study of the AC magnetic susceptibility shows a field-induced slow relaxation of the magnetisation for 1, indicating the presence of the single-ion magnet (SIM) phenomenon for the magnetically isolated hexabromoiridate(IV) complex.

Paramagnetic single-molecule magnets (SMMs) interacting with the ferromagnetic electrodes of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) produce a new system. The properties and future scope of new systems differ dramatically from the properties of isolated molecules and ferromagnets. However, it is unknown how far deep in the ferromagnetic electrode the impact of the paramagnetic molecule and ferromagnet interactions can travel for various levels of molecular spin states. Our prior experimental studies showed two types of paramagnetic SMMs, the hexanuclear Mn 6 and octanuclear Fe-Ni molecular complexes, covalently bonded to ferromagnets produced unprecedented strong antiferromagnetic coupling between two ferromagnets at room temperature leading to a number of intriguing observations (P. Tyagi, et al. , Org. Electron. , 2019, 64 , 188-194. P. Tyagi, et al. , RSC Adv. , 2020, 10 , (22), 13006-13015). This paper reports a Monte Carlo Simulations (MCS) study focusing on the impact of the molecular spin state on a cross junction shaped MTJ based molecular spintronics device (MTJMSD). Our MCS study focused on the Heisenberg model of MTJMSD and investigated the impact of various molecular coupling strengths, thermal energy, and molecular spin states. To gauge the impact of the molecular spin state on the region of ferromagnetic electrodes, we examined the spatial distribution of molecule-ferromagnet correlated phases. The coexistence of field-induced blockage of the magnetization and significant magnetocaloric effects in the low-temperature region occurs in a mononuclear holmium(III) diethylenetriamine- N , N , N ', N ″, N ″-pentaacetate complex, whose gadolinium(III) analogue is a commercial MRI contrast agent. Both properties make it a suitable candidate for cryogenic magnetic refrigeration, thus enlarging the variety of applications of this simple class of multifunctional molecular nanomagnets.

The paramagnetic gadolinium(III) ion is used as contrast agent in magnetic resonance (MR) imaging to improve the lesion detection and characterization. It generates a signal by changing the relaxivity of protons from associated water molecules and creates a clearer physical distinction between the molecule and the surrounding tissues. New gadolinium-based contrast agents displaying larger relaxivity values and specifically targeted might provide higher resolution and better functional images. We have synthesized the gadolinium(III) complex of formula [Gd(thy) 2 (H 2 O) 6 ](ClO 4 ) 3 ·2H 2 O ( 1 ) [thy = 5-methyl-1H-pyrimidine-2,4-dione or thymine], which is the first reported compound based on gadolinium and thymine nucleobase. 1 has been characterized through UV-vis, IR, SEM-EDAX, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques, and its magnetic and relaxometric properties have been investigated by means of SQUID magnetometer and MR imaging phantom studies, respectively. On the basis of its high relaxivity values, this gadolinium(III) complex can be considered a suitable candidate for contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging.

The coexistence of field-induced slow magnetic relaxation and moderately large magnetocaloric efficiency in the supra-Kelvin temperature region occurs in the 2D compound [Gd(ox) 3 (H 2 O) 6 ] n ·4nH 2 O (1), a feature that can be exploited in the proof-of-concept design of a new class of slow-relaxing magnetic materials for cryogenic magnetic refrigeration.

The (NH 4 ) 2 [ReF 6 ] (1) salt was studied by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, theoretical calculations, and magnetic measurements. 1 crystallizes in the trigonal space group P 3̄ m 1 (Re-F = 1.958(5) Å). In the Raman spectrum of 1, splitting of the observed peaks was observed and correlated to the valence frequencies of vibration of the [ReF 6 ] 2- anion. The study of the magnetic properties of 1, through DC and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements, reveals the coexistence of metamagnetism and slow relaxation of magnetization at low temperature, which is unusual in the molecular systems based on the paramagnetic 5d metal ions reported so far., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Hypoxanthine (hpx) is an important molecule for both biochemistry research and biomedical applications. It is involved in several biological processes associated to energy and purine metabolism and has been proposed as a biomarker for a variety of disease states. Consequently, the discovery and development of systems suitable for the detection of hypoxanthine is pretty appealing in this research field. Thus, we have obtained a stable diruthenium (III) compound in its dehydrated and hydrated forms with formula [{Ru(µ-Cl)(µ-hpx)} 2 Cl 4 ] ( 1a ) and [{Ru(µ-Cl)(µ-hpx)} 2 Cl 4 ]·2H 2 O ( 1b ), respectively. This purine-based diruthenium(III) system was prepared from two very different starting materials, namely, inosine and azathioprine, the latter being an immunosuppressive drug. Remarkably, it was observed that an unusual azathioprine hydrolysis occurs in the presence of ruthenium, thus generating hypoxanthine instead of the expected 6-mercaptopurine antimetabolite, so that the hpx molecule is linked to two ruthenium(III) ions. 1a and 1b were characterized through IR, SEM, powder and single-crystal X-ray Diffraction and Cyclic Voltammetry (CV). The electrochemical studies allowed us to detect the hpx molecule when coordinated to ruthenium in the reported compound. The grade of sensitivity, repeatability and stability reached by this diruthenium system make it potentially useful and could provide a first step to develop new sensor devices suitable to detect hypoxanthine.

Two one-dimensional dysprosium(iii) complexes based on α-glycine (gly) and β-alanine (β-ala) amino acids, with the formula {[Dy 2 (gly) 6 (H 2 O) 4 ](ClO 4 ) 6 ·5H 2 O} n (1) and {[Dy 2 (β-ala) 6 (H 2 O) 4 ](ClO 4 ) 6 ·H 2 O} n (2), have been synthesised and characterised structurally and magnetically. Both compounds crystallise in the triclinic system with the space group P1[combining macron]. In 1, two Dy III ions are eight-coordinate and bound to six oxygen atoms from six gly ligands and two oxygen atoms from two water molecules, showing different geometries (bicapped trigonal prism and square antiprism). In 2, two Dy III ions are nine-coordinate and bound to seven oxygen atoms from six β-ala ligands and two oxygen atoms from two water molecules in the same geometry (capped square antiprism). In the crystal packing of both compounds, cationic {[Dy 2 (L) 6 (H 2 O) 4 ] 6+ } n [L = α-glycine (1) and β-alanine (2)] chains, ClO 4 - anions, and water molecules generate a network connected through H-bonding interactions. The study of the magnetic properties of 1 and 2 through dc magnetic susceptibility measurements reveals different magnetic behaviour 1 and 2. In addition, ac magnetic susceptibility measurements show a field-induced slow relaxation of magnetisation for both compounds, pointing out that the single-molecule magnet (SMM) phenomenon occurs in both 1 and 2.

A device architecture utilizing a single-molecule magnet (SMM) as a device element between two ferromagnetic electrodes may open vast opportunities to create novel molecular spintronics devices. Here, we report a method of connecting an SMM to the ferromagnetic electrodes. We utilized a nickel (Ni)-AlO x -Ni magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) with the exposed side edges as a test bed. In the present work, we utilized an SMM with a hexanuclear [Mn 6 (μ 3 -O) 2 (H 2 N-sao) 6 (6-atha) 2 (EtOH) 6 ] [H 2 N-saoH = salicylamidoxime, 6-atha = 6-acetylthiohexanoate] complex that is attached to alkane tethers terminated with thiols. These Mn-based molecules were electrochemically bonded between the two Ni electrodes of an exposed-edge tunnel junction, which was produced by the lift-off method. The SMM-treated MTJ exhibited current enhancement and transitory current suppression at room temperature. The iridium(iv) complex (NBu 4 ) 2 [IrCl 6 ] (1) has been synthetised, characterised and used as a precursor to prepare the new chloro-bridged heterobimetallic Ir IV -Cu II chain of formula {IrCl 5 (μ-Cl)Cu(viim) 4 } n (2) [viim = 1-vinylimidazole]. The crystal structure and magnetic properties of 1 and 2 have been investigated. Both compounds crystallise in the monoclinic system with space group C2/c. Each Ir IV ion in both 1 and 2 is six-coordinate and bonded to six chloride ions in a regular octahedral geometry. In compound 2, the Cu II ion exhibits an axially elongated octahedron with four N atoms, from four monodentate viim ligands, that form the equatorial plane, and two chloride ions that occupy the axial positions. The way in which the anionic [IrCl 6 ] 2- units are arranged in the crystal packing of 1, well separated from each other by means of the bulky NBu 4 + cations, avoids significant intermolecular Ir-ClCl-Ir interactions. The crystal lattice of 2 shows adjacent Ir IV -Cu II chains that are connected through ππ stacking interactions, and are organized adopting perpendicular arrangements. The study of the magnetic properties of 1 and 2 through dc magnetic susceptibility measurements reveals that 1 shows magnetic behaviour typical of noninteracting mononuclear centres with S = 1/2, whereas 2 exhibits ferromagnetic exchange coupling between the Cu II and Ir IV metal ions linked through chloride ligands. In addition, ac magnetic susceptibility measurements show a field-induced slow relaxation of the magnetisation for 1, indicating single-ion magnet (SIM) behaviour for this mononuclear Ir IV system.

The compound (NBu4)4[ZnII{ReIVCl4(μ-ox)}3] (1) [NBu4+ = tetra-n-butylammonium cation and ox2- = oxalate dianion] is the first example of an oxalato-bridged ZnII system coordinated to a 5d metal ion that exhibits slow relaxation of magnetisation.

The reaction of [Cr3IIIO(OAc)6(H2O)3]NO3·AcOH with 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde, 2-amino-isobutyric acid and NiCl2·6H2O in MeOH, under basic and solvothermal conditions, led to the formation of the quasi-1D coordination polymer {[CrIII2NiII(L)4(MeOH)2]}n (where L = the dianion of the Schiff base between 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde and 2-amino-isobutyric acid), which behaves as a ferromagnetic chain, displaying slow relaxation of magnetization.

Six novel one-dimensional chloro-bridged Re IV Cu II complexes of formula {[Cu(L) 4 ][ReCl 6 ]} n , where L = imidazole (Imi, 1), 1-methylimidazole (Meim, 2), 1-vinylimidazole (Vim, 3), 1-butylimidazole (Buim, 4), 1-vinyl-1,2,4-triazole (Vtri, 5) and N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF, 6) are characterised structurally, magnetically and theoretically. The structures exhibit significant differences in Cu-Cl bond lengths and Re-Cl-Cu bridging angles, resulting in large differences in the nature and magnitude of magnetic exchange interactions between the Re IV and Cu II ions. Theoretical calculations reveal the coupling to be primarily ferromagnetic, increasing in magnitude as the bridging angle becomes smaller and the bond lengths shorten.

The employment of pyrazine (pyz), pyrimidine (pym) and s-triazine (triz) ligands in Re IV chemistry leads to the isolation of a family of complexes of general formula (NBu 4 ) 2 [(ReX 5 ) 2 (μ-L)] (L = pyz, X = Cl (1) or Br (2); L = pym, X = Br (3); L = triz, X = Br (4)). 1-4 are dinuclear compounds where two pentahalorhenium(iv) fragments are connected by bidentate pyz, pym and triz ligands. Variable-temperature magnetic measurements, in combination with detailed theoretical studies, uncover the underlying magneto-structural correlation whereby the nature of the exchange between the metal ions is dictated by the number of intervening atoms. That is, the spin-polarization mechanism present dictates that odd and even numbers of atoms favour ferromagnetic (F) and antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange interactions, respectively. Hence, while the pyz ligand in 1 and 2 mediates AF coupling, the pym and triz ligands in 3 and 4 promote F interactions.

Eight coordination compounds of formulae [Fe II (L˙) 2 ][Re IV Cl 6 ] (1a), [Fe II (L˙) 2 ][Re IV Br 6 ] (1b), [Co II (L˙) 2 ][Re IV Cl 6 ]·CH 3 CN (2a), [Co II (L˙) 2 ][Re IV Br 6 ] (2b), [Ni II (L˙)(CH 3 CN) 3 ][Re IV Cl 6 ]·CH 3 CN (3a), [Ni II (L˙)(CH 3 CN) 3 ][Re IV Br 6 ]·3CH 3 CN (3b), [Cu II (L˙) 2 ][Re IV Cl 6 ] (4a) and [Cu II (L˙) 2 ][Re IV Br 6 ] (4b), where L˙ is the aminoxyl radical chelating ligand, 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-di(2-pyridyl)oxazolidine-N-oxide, have been synthesised. Structural and magnetic studies reveal metal-radical intramolecular antiferromagnetic interactions in the [M II (L˙) 2 ] 2+ cations in the iron, cobalt and copper based compounds (1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 4a and 4b) with the central metal ion low-spin in the case of iron (1a and 1b) and a gradual, cobalt based, spin-crossover transition present in 2a and 2b. The nickel based compounds, 3a and 3b, were analysed in the dried form (3a(dried) and 3b(dried)) and directly in acetonitrile (3a(solvated) and 3b(solvated)). Microanalysis and IR spectroscopy on 3a(dried) and 3b(dried) suggest that the dried samples are best formulated as [Ni II (L˙)(H 2 O) 3 ][Re IV X 6 ], where X = Cl (3a(dried)) and Br (3b(dried)). All forms of 3a and 3b exhibit cationic metal-radical ferromagnetic interactions resulting in S = 3/2 ground states. In addition, 3a(dried) exhibits spin-canting behaviour with an ordering temperature of 2.7 K, an open hysteresis loop with a coercive field H c = 580 Oe, and a remanent magnetisation M r = 0.21μ B , resulting in a canting angle of ∼1.8°. In contrast, 3b(dried) shows no spin-canting behaviour; a maximum in χ M vs. T at T = 3 K suggesting long-range antiferromagnetic ordering. 3a(solvated) and 3b(solvated) show no indication of long-range magnetic ordering, unlike 4a and 4b where anomalies are evident in the low-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements.

Materials that demonstrate long-range magnetic order are synonymous with information storage and the electronics industry, with the phenomenon commonly associated with metals, metal alloys or metal oxides and sulfides. A lesser known family of magnetically ordered complexes are the monometallic compounds of highly anisotropic d-block transition metals; the 'transformation' from isolated zero-dimensional molecule to ordered, spin-canted, three-dimensional lattice being the result of through-space interactions arising from the combination of large magnetic anisotropy and spin-delocalization from metal to ligand which induces important intermolecular contacts. Here we report the effect of pressure on two such mononuclear rhenium(IV) compounds that exhibit long-range magnetic order under ambient conditions via a spin canting mechanism, with T c controlled by the strength of the intermolecular interactions. As these are determined by intermolecular distance, 'squeezing' the molecules closer together generates remarkable enhancements in ordering temperatures, with a linear dependence of T c with pressure.

The energy barrier to magnetisation relaxation in single-molecule magnets (SMMs) proffers potential technological applications in high-density information storage and quantum computation. Leading candidates amongst complexes of 3d metals ions are the hexametallic family of complexes of formula [Mn6 O2 (R-sao)6 (X)2 (solvent)y ] (saoH2 =salicylaldoxime; X=mono-anion; y=4-6; R=H, Me, Et, and Ph). The recent synthesis of cationic [Mn6 ][ClO4 ]2 family members, in which the coordinating X ions were replaced with non-coordinating anions, opened the gateway to constructing families of novel [Mn6 ] salts in which the identity and nature of the charge balancing anions could be employed to alter the physical properties of the complex. Herein we demonstrate initial experiments to show that this is indeed possible. By replacing the diamagnetic ClO4 (-) anions with the highly anisotropic Re(IV) ion in the form of [Re(IV) Cl6 ](2-) , the energy barrier to magnetisation relaxation is increased by up to 30 %., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A new heteroleptic 1D Cu(I)-Re(IV) coordination polymer of the formula {Cu(I)Re(IV)Cl4(μ-Cl)(μ-pyz)[Re(IV)Cl4(μ-bpym)]}n·nMeNO2 (1; pyz = pyrazine, bpym = 2,2'-bipyrimidine) has been prepared through the Cu(I)-mediated self-assembly of two different Re(IV) metalloligands, namely, [ReCl5(pyz)](-) and [ReCl4(bpym)]. 1 consists of chiral branched chains with an overall rack-type architecture displaying photoemission and magnetic ordering. These results constitute a first step toward making new multifunctional magnetic materials based on mixed 3d-5d molecular systems.

A new chloro-bridged heterobimetallic Cu(II)Re(IV) chain of formula {Cu(pyim)(Him)2ReCl6}n·MeCN (·MeCN) has been prepared and magnetostructurally characterised. Compound is the first example of the [Re(IV)Cl6](2-) anion acting as a metalloligand towards a paramagnetic metal ion.

Three novel cationic hexametallic Mn(III) compounds of formulae [Mn6(μ3-O)2(H2N-sao)6(py)6(EtOH)2](ClO4)2·4EtOH (1), [Mn6(μ3-O)2(H2N-sao)6(tpy)6(H2O)2](ClO4)2·2tpy·4H2O·2EtOH (2) and [Mn6(μ3-O)2(H2N-sao)6(Him)6(EtOH)2](ClO4)2·6EtOH (3) [H2N-saoH2 = salicylamidoxime, py = pyridine, tpy = 4-tert-butylpyridine and Him = imidazole] have been synthesised and magnetostructurally characterised. These [Mn6](2+) complexes are new members of the oxime-based family of neutral [Mn6] single-molecule magnets (SMMs) in which the previously terminally bonded carboxylates, phosphinates, halides or ROH molecules on the outwardly facing triangular faces have been replaced with pyridine (1), 4-tert-butylpyridine (2) and imidazole (3) molecules generating a new series of salts based on Mn6 complexes. These results suggest that the cationic [Mn6](2+) species could be used as suitable building blocks for preparing new materials with different functionalities.

By using Vitamin B6 in its monodeprotonated pyridoxine form (PN-H) [PN = 3-hydroxy-4,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)-2-methylpyridine], two tetranuclear compounds of formula [Mn4(PN-H)4(CH3CO2)3Cl2]Cl·2CH3OH·2H2O (1) and [Cu4(PN-H)4Cl2(H2O)2]Cl2 (2) have been synthesized and magneto-structurally characterized. 1 crystallizes in the triclinic system with space group P1 whereas 2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic system with Fdd2 as space group. They exhibit Mn(II)2Mn(III)2 (1) and Cu(II)4 (2) cubane cores containing four monodeprotonated pyridoxine groups simultaneously acting as chelating and bridging ligands (1 and 2), three bridging acetate ligands in the syn-syn conformation (1), and two terminally bound chloride anions (1 and 2) plus two coordinated water molecules (2). The electroneutrality is achieved by the presence of chloride counterions in both compounds. Tri- [Mn(1) and Mn(3)] and divalent [Mn(2) and Mn(4)] manganese centers coexist in 1, all being six-coordinate with distorted Mn(1/3)O6 and Mn(2/4)O5Cl octahedral surroundings, respectively, the equatorial Mn-O bonds being about 0.2 Å shorter at the former ones. The two crystallographically independent copper(II) ions in 2 are five-coordinate in somewhat distorted CuO5 [Cu(1)] and CuO4Cl [Cu(2)] square pyramidal geometries. The values of the intracore metal-metal separation cover the ranges 3.144(1)-3.535(1) (1) and 2.922(6)-3.376(1) Å (2). The magnetic properties of 1 and 2 were investigated in the temperature range 1.9-300 K, and they correspond to an overall antiferromagnetic behavior with susceptibility maxima at 5.0 (1) and 65.0 K (2). The analysis of the magnetic susceptibility data showed the coexistence of intracore antiferro- and ferromagnetic interactions in the two compounds. Their values compare well with those existing in the literature for the parent systems.

The salicylamidoxime-based complex [Mn6(μ3-O)2(H2N-sao)6(py)6(EtOH)2](ClO4)2·4EtOH (1·4EtOH) constitutes the first example of a cationic and ferromagnetic member of the oxime-based family of [Mn(III)6] single-molecule magnets.

The rhenium(IV) complex (NBu4)2[ReBr4(ox)] (1) (ox = oxalate and NBu4(+) = tetra-n-butylammonium cation) has been prepared and its crystal structure determined by X-ray diffraction. The structure is made up of discrete [ReBr4(ox)](2-) anions and bulky NBu4(+) cations. Each [ReBr4(ox)](2-) anion is surrounded by six NBu4(+) cations, which preclude any significant intermolecular contact between the anionic entities, the shortest rhenium···rhenium distance being 9.373(1) Å. Variable temperature dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements and field-dependent magnetization experiments on polycrystalline samples of 1 reveal the occurrence of highly anisotropic magnetically isolated Re(IV) centers (S(Re) = 3/2), which exhibit slow relaxation of the magnetization at very low temperatures in a dc field. Ac measurements conducted on a polycrystalline sample of the complex (NBu4)2[ReCl4(ox)] (2) [compound isostructural to 1 whose structure and dc magnetic susceptibility study were previously reported in Tomkiewicz, A.; Bartczak, T. J.; Kruszyński, R.; Mroziński, J. J. Mol. Struct. 2001, 595, 225] show a similar behavior, both complexes thus constituting new examples of mononuclear single-molecule magnets. High-frequency and -field electron paramagnetic resonance on polycrystalline samples of 1 and 2 and on single crystals of 2 allowed for the determination for the first time of the negative sign and confirmed a significant magnitude and rhombicity (E/D) of the zero-field splitting tensor of the [ReCl4(ox)](2-) and [ReBr4(ox)](2-) centers, originating from a combination of spin-orbit coupling and low molecular symmetry. D and E values of 1 and 2 were estimated through magnetization measurements and theoretically calculated through complete active space and density functional theory methodologies.

Three novel heterobimetallic Re(IV) compounds of formulae [ReBr(4)(μ-ox)M(4,7-Cl(2)phen)(2)]·CH(3)CN·CH(3)NO(2) [M = Co(II) (1) and Ni(II) (2)] and [ReBr(4)(ox)](3)[Co(III)(5,6-dmphen)(3)](2)·CH(3)CN·2CH(3)NO(2)·4H(2)O (3) [ox = oxalate, 4,7-Cl(2)phen = 4,7-dichloro-1,10-phenanthroline and 5,6-dmphen = 5,6-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline] have been synthesised and the structures of 1 and 3 determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 is an oxalato-bridged Re(IV)Co(II) heterodinuclear complex where the [ReBr(4)(ox)](2-) unit acts as a bidentate ligand towards the [Co(4,7-Cl(2)phen)(2)](2+) entity, the separation between Re(IV) and Co(II) across the oxalate being 5.482(1) Å. Compound 3 is an ionic salt whose structure is made up of [Re(IV)Br(4)(ox)](2-) anions and [Co(III)(5,6-dmphen)(3)](3+) cations plus acetonitrile, nitromethane and water as solvent molecules. The magnetic properties of 1-3 were investigated in the temperature range 1.9-300 K. Relatively large ferromagnetic interactions between Re(IV) and M(II) through the bis(bidentate) oxalato occur in 1 and 2 [J(ReM) = +11.0 (1) and +12.2 cm(-1) (2), the Hamiltonian being defined as Ĥ = -J(ReM)Ŝ(Re)·Ŝ(M)] which are explained on the basis of orbital symmetry considerations. A behaviour typical of a magnetically diluted Re(IV) complex with a large and positive value of zero-field splitting for the ground level (D(Re) = +43 cm(-1)) is observed for 3 in the high temperature range, whereas it exhibits spin canting in the low temperature domain as well as magnetic ordering below ca. 4.8 K.

Salicylamidoxime was used to synthesize 13 new polynuclear Mn(III) complexes. We present the crystallographic structures, the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetization measurements of eight of them (1-8) with the general formula [Mn(6)O(2)(H(2)N-sao)(6)(L)(2)(solvent)(4-6)] (L = carboxylate, chloride, 2-cyanophenolate; solvent = H(2)O, MeOH, EtOH, py). These complexes consist of two trinuclear {Mn(III)(3)(μ(3)-O)(H(2)N-sao)(3)}(+) cationic units linked together via two oximate and two phenolate oxygen atoms. All behave as single-molecule magnets, with the spin ground state varying from 4 to 12 and anisotropy energy barriers from 24 to 86 K, the latter being as high as the present record barrier in the Mn(6) complexes. DFT calculations were performed to compute the exchange magnetic coupling constants J between the metallic ions and to provide an orbital interpretation of exchange. Our results are in line with previously reported results with the parent salicylaldoxime derivatives. The Mn-N-O-Mn torsion angle appears as the main parameter controlling the J values. The critical angle where the exchange coupling between two Mn(III) switches from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic is 27°, less than the one found in related complexes with salicylaldoxime (30°). We propose a structural classification of the {Mn(6)} complexes in four classes depending on the coordination of the axial carboxylate. The work points out the structural flexibility of such systems, their sensitivity to solvent effects and their ability to achieve high anisotropy energy barriers by simple desolvation.

The compound (NBu(4))(5)[Gd(III){Re(IV)Br(4)(μ-ox)}(4)(H(2)O)]·H(2)O (1), with intramolecular antiferromagnetic coupling, is the first Re(iv) system incorporating a 4f ion.

The use of the [ReCl(4)(bpym)] precursor as a ligand toward the fully solvated nickel(II) metal ion affords the first example of a 2,2'-bipyrimidine-bridged Re(IV)-Ni(II) complex, [ReCl(4)(μ-bpym)NiBr(2)(H(2)O)(2)] (1), whose intramolecular ferromagnetic coupling has been substantiated from both experimental and theoretical studies., (© 2011 American Chemical Society)

Four heterotrinuclear Re(IV)(2)M(II) compounds of general formula (NBu(4))(2)[{Re(IV)Br(4)(μ-ox)}(2)M(II)(Him)(2)] [NBu(4)(+) = tetra-n-butylammonium cation, ox = oxalate, Him = imidazole; M = Mn (1), Co (2), Ni (3), and Cu (4)] have been synthesized by using the novel mononuclear complex [Re(IV)Br(4)(ox)](2-) as a ligand toward divalent first-row transition metal ions in the presence of imidazole. Compounds 1-4 are isostructural complexes whose structure contains discrete trinuclear [{Re(IV)Br(4)(μ-ox)}(2)M(II)(Him)(2)](2-) anions and bulky NBu(4)(+) cations. The Re and M atoms are six-coordinated: four peripheral bromo and two oxalate-oxygens (at Re), and two cis-coordinated imidazole molecules and four oxygen atoms from two oxalate ligands (at M), build distorted octahedral surroundings. Two peripheral [ReBr(4)(ox)](2-) units act as bidentate ligands through the oxalate group toward the central [M(II)(Him)(2)] fragment affording the trinuclear entities. The values of the intramolecular Re···M separation are 5.62(1) (1), 5.51(1) (2), 5.46(1) (3), and 5.55(1) Å (4). Magnetic susceptibility measurements on polycrystalline samples of 1-4 in the temperature range of 1.9-300 K show the occurrence of intramolecular antiferro- [J = -1.1 cm(-1) (1)] and ferromagnetic interactions [J = +3.9 (2), +19.7 (3), and +14.4 cm(-1) (4)], the Hamiltonian being defined as Ĥ = -J [Ŝ(M)(Ŝ(Re1) + Ŝ(Re2))]. The larger spin delocalization on the oxalato bridge in 1-4 when compared to the trinuclear Re(IV)(2)M(II) complexes with chloro instead of bromo as peripheral ligands (1'-4') accounts for the strengthening of the magnetic interactions in 1-4 [J = -0.35 (1'), +14.2 (3'), and +7.7 cm(-1) (4')]. An incipient frequency dependence of the out-of-phase ac signals of 3 at very low temperatures is reminiscent of a system with slow relaxation of the magnetization, a phenomenon characteristic of single-molecule magnet behavior., (© 2011 American Chemical Society)

The Re(IV)-Mo(VI) compound of formula (PPh(4))(2)[ReCl(4)(μ-ox)MoO(2)Cl(2)] (1) constitutes the first example of a heterodinuclear oxalato-bridged complex in the coordination chemistry of molybdenum.

A magneto-structural study of two salicylamidoxime-based {Mn(6)} single-molecule magnets revealed that their anisotropy energy barriers, which can reach the current record for d-transition metal complexes, are strongly dependent upon the precise arrangement of ligands and the solvation state.

The use of the mononuclear species (NBu(4))(2)[Re(IV)Cl(4)(ox)] (NBu(4)(+) = tetra-n-butylammonium cation; ox = oxalate dianion) as a ligand toward fully solvated divalent first-row transition-metal ions affords the tetranuclear complexes (NBu(4))(4)[{Re(IV)Cl(4)(mu-ox)}(3)M(II)] with M = Mn (1), Fe (2), Co (3), Ni (4), and Cu (5). Their structure is made up of discrete [{ReCl(4)(mu-ox)}(3)M](4-) anions and bulky NBu(4)(+) cations. The complexes 2-5 crystallize in the triclinic system with space group P1; 2 and 5 as well as 3 and 4 are isostructural. The Re and M atoms exhibit somewhat distorted ReCl(4)O(2) and MO(6) octahedral surroundings, with the oxalate groups adopting the bis-bidentate bridging mode. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on polycrystalline samples of 1-5 in the temperature range 1.9-300 K show the occurrence of intramolecular antiferromagnetic [J = -1.30 cm(-1) (1)] and ferromagnetic couplings [J = +1.62 (2), +3.0 (3), +16.3 (4), and +4.64 cm(-1) (5)], with the Hamiltonian being defined as H = -J[S(M)(S(Re1) + S(Re2) + S(Re3))]. Compound 4 is the first example of an oxalato-bridged heterometallic species that behaves as a single-molecule magnet with a ground-state spin S = (11)/(2) and D = -0.8(1) cm(-1), as shown by the study of its static and dynamic magnetic properties and a high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance study on polycrystalline samples together with detailed micro-SQUID measurements on single crystals.

A dodecanuclear copper(II) globular-shaped structure has been obtained with the cytidine nucleoside and the templating carbonate anion. It shows receptor properties through anion-cation and multiple anion-pi interactions toward ClO 4 (-) as well as an overall antiferromagnetic coupling.

Three novel Re(IV) mononuclear complexes of formulae NBu4[ReC15(pyz)] (1), NH2Me2[ReCl5(pyz)] (2) and NH4[ReCl5(pyz)].0.75H2O (3), (pyz being pyrazine; NBu4+ = tetra-n-butylammonium cation, NH2Me2+ = dimethylammonium cation and NH4+ = ammonium cation), were synthesized by ligand substitution reaction from [ReCl6]2- anion and pyrazine in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). In addition, two new heterobimetallic compounds, the salt namely [ReCl5(pyz)]2[Ni(cyclam)](4) (cyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) and the heterotrinuclear [{ReCl5(mu-pyz)}2Cu(DMF)4] (5) complex, were prepared by using as precursor 1 and 3, respectively. Compounds 1-5 were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 1-3 are made up of discrete [ReCl5(pyz)]- anions and NBu4 (1), NH2Me2+ (2) and NH4+ (3) cations. [ReCl5(pyz)]- unit interacts toward Ni(II) (4) and Cu(II) (5) metal ions through different modes. In 4 two [ReCl5(pyz)]- anions weakly interact with a [Ni(cyclam)]2+ cation through chloro atoms, while compound 5 is a heterotrinuclear pyrazine-bridged Re(IV)2Cu(II) complex made up of [ReCl5(pyz)]- anions and [Cu(DMF)4]2+ cations. The magnetic properties of 1-5 were investigated in the temperature range 1.9-300 K. The magnetic behaviour of 1 is that of a magnetically diluted Re(IV) complex with a large value of zero-field splitting of the ground state (/2D/ is ca. 18.8(1) cm(-1)), whereas those of 2 and 3 are typical of antiferromagnetically coupled systems exhibiting susceptibility maxima at 10 (2) and 12 K (3). Compound 4 shows antiferromagnetic interactions between Re(IV) metal ions, Ni(II) being diamagnetic (because of its square-planar geometry), while 5 exhibits a ferromagnetic coupling between Re(IV) and Cu(II) metal ions across the pyrazine bridges with a J(ReCu), value of +11.8(1) cm(-1).

A new heterobimetallic Re(IV)Cu(II) compound has been prepared and its crystal structure determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction; magnetic susceptibility measurements show that this compound behaves as a ferrimagnetic chain with significant antiferromagnetic interactions between Re(IV) and Cu(II) metal ions.

The use of the (NBu4)2[ReIVCl4(ox)] mononuclear species as a ligand toward divalent first row transition metal ions in the presence of imidazole affords the new trinuclear compounds of formula (NBu4)2[{ReIVCl4(mu-ox)}2MII(Him)2] [NBu4+=tetra-n-butylammonium cation, ox=oxalate dianion, Him=imidazole; M=Mn (1), Co (2), Ni (3), Cu (4)] whose preparation, crystal structures, and magnetic properties are reported. 1-4 are isostructural complexes which are made up of discrete trinuclear [{ReIVCl4(mu-ox)}2MII(Him)2]2- anions and bulky NBu4+ cations. The Re and M atoms exhibit somewhat distorted octahedral surroundings which are built by four chloro and two oxalate oxygens (Re) and two imidazole nitrogen and four oxalate oxygen atoms (M), the central M atom being linked to the two peripheral Re atoms through bis-bidentate oxalate. The values of the Re...M separation across bridging oxalate vary in the range 5.646(2) (M=Ni) to 5.794(2) A (M=Mn). Magnetic susceptibility measurements on polycrystalline samples of 1-4 in the temperature range 1.9-300 K show the occurrence of significant intramolecular antiferro- (1) and ferromagnetic (2-4) interactions. The nature and magnitude of the magnetic coupling in 1-4 are qualitatively understood through orbital symmetry considerations.

Four novel rhenium complexes of formula [ReCl(4)(bpym)] (1), [ReBr(4)(bpym)] (2) PPh(4)[ReCl(4)(bpym)] (3) and NBu(4)[ReBr(4)(bpym)] (4) (bpym = 2,2'-bipyrimidine, PPh(4) = tetraphenylphosphonium cation and NBu(4) = tetrabutylammonium cation), have been synthesized and their crystal structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structures of 1 and 2 consist of [ReX(4)(bpym)] molecules held together by van der Waals forces. In both complexes the Re(iv) central atom is surrounded by four halide anions and two nitrogen atoms of a bpym bidentate ligand in a distorted octahedral environment. The structures of 3 and 4 consist of [ReX(4)(bpym)](-) anions and PPh(4)(+) () or NBu(4)(+) (4) cations. The coordination sphere of the Re(iii) metal ion is the same as in 1 and 2, respectively. However, whereas the Re-X bonds are longer the Re-N bonds are shorter than in 1 and 2. This fact reveals that the bpym ligand forms a stronger bond with Re(iii) than with Re(iv) resulting in a stabilisation of the lower oxidation state. [ReX(4)(bpym)] complexes are easily reduced, chemically and electrochemically, to the corresponding [ReX(4)(bpym)](-) anions. A voltammetric study shows that the electron transference is a reversible process characterized by formal redox potentials of +0.19 V (1) and +0.32 V (2) vs. NHE, in acetonitrile as solvent.

The reaction of [ReIVCl4(ox)]2- and fully solvated Ni2+ ions in a MeCN/i-PrOH mixture affords the heterotetranuclear complex (NBu4)4[Ni{ReCl4(ox)}3] where the rhenium precursor acts as a bidentate ligand toward the nicke(II) ion through the oxalate group. The mixed 3d-5d species exhibits intramolecular ferromagnetic coupling and it behaves like a single-molecule magnet.

A novel mu-pyrazolato-mu-hydroxo-dibridged copper(II) complex has been synthesized and structurally characterized: [(Cu(mepirizole)Br)2(mu-OH)(mu-pz)] (mepirizole=4-methoxy-2-(5-methoxy-3-methyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-6-methylpyrimidine; pz=pyrazolate). The title compound crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/c, with a=15.618(2) A, b=15.369(3) A, c=16.071(3) A, and beta=112.250(1) degrees. The structure is built up of dinuclear [(Cu(mepirizole)Br)2(mu-OH)(mu-pz)] units with five-coordinated copper(II) ions (CuBrN3O chromophores) linked by mu2-OH and mu2-pyrazolato bridges that are well separated from each others. The intramolecular copper-copper distance is 3.378(3) A. Magnetic susceptibility data show that the copper atoms are strongly antiferromagnetically coupled with J=-770 cm(-1). The obtained triplet-singlet energy gap is compared with those reported for a series of related dimers. The strong antiferromagnetic coupling arising from the complementarity of the hydroxo and pyrazolato bridges has been discussed on the basis of DFT calculations.
