1. Demanding Occupations and the Retirement Age in the Netherlands

Abstract: In the policy debate on increasing the statutory retirement age, the issue has been raised to make an exception for workers with demanding occupations, since health considerations may make it unreasonable to expect them to work longer. We use unique Dutch survey data to analyze the general publicâ€™s opinions on what are demanding occupations, to what extent it is justified that someone with a demanding occupation can retire earlier, and on the willingness to contribute to an earlier retirement scheme for such occupations through higher taxes. A representative sample of Dutch adults answered several questions about hypothetical persons with five different jobs. Panel data models are used to analyze the answers, accounting for confounding factors affecting the evaluations of the demanding nature of the jobs as well as their reasonable retirement age or willingness to contribute to an early retirement scheme. The Dutch public thinks that workers in demanding occupations should be able to retire earlier. A one standard deviation increase in the perceived demanding nature of an occupation translates into a one year decrease in the reasonable retirement age and a 30 to 40 percentage points increase in the willingness to contribute to an early retirement scheme for that occupation. There is some evidence that respondents whose own job is similar to the occupation they evaluate find this occupation more demanding than other respondents but respondents are also willing to contribute to early retirement of occupations that are not similar to their own.

Abstract: International audience; This chapter investigates the cone of copositive matrices, with a focus on the design and analysis of conic inner approximations for it. These approximations are based on various sufficient conditions for matrix copositivity, relying on positivity certificates in terms of sums of squares of polynomials. Their application to the discrete optimization problem asking for a maximum stable set in a graph is also discussed. A central theme in this chapter is understanding when the conic approximations suffice for describing the full copositive cone, and when the corresponding bounds for the stable set problem admit finite convergence.

4. The incidence of pension contributions

Abstract: One of the key elements in the planned pension reform in the Netherlands is to abolish the implicit subsidy from younger to older workers inherent in pension schemes with age independent contribution and accrual rates. This paper investigates the impact of changes in contribution rates on wages, labor costs and labor supply using a rich administrative data set covering individual employees in the Netherlands for the period 2006–2012. With a panel-based approach and data on both marginal and average contribution rates we aim to provide insight into the mechanisms underlying the incidence and labor supply (in hours) effects of pension contributions. For a two-year change in pension contributions we find that 70% of this change is passed on to the labor costs of employers, while 30% is passed on to the net wage of the employee. No significant effects are found for labor supply. At least in the short and medium run, our results seem at variance with the standard demand-and-supply model for the labor market, but are consistent with a bargaining model.

Abstract: International audience; Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) has increasingly been identified over the last two decades in non-CNS system cancer patients. Across Europe, researchers have contributed to this effort by developing preclinical models, exploring underlying mechanisms and assessing cognitive and quality of life changes. The ultimate goal is to develop interventions to treat patients experiencing CRCI. To do so, new challenges need to be addressed requiring the implementation of multidisciplinary research groups. In this consensus paper, we summarize the state of the art in the field of CRCI combined with the future challenges and action plans in Europe. These challenges include data sharing/pooling, standardization of assessments as well as assessing additional biomarkers and neuroimaging investigations, notably through translational studies. We conclude this position paper with specific actions for Europe based on shared scientific expert opinion and stakeholders involved in the Innovative Partnership for Action Against Cancer, with a particular focus on cognitive intervention programs.

Abstract: BackgroundSeveral studies have evaluated whether depressed persons have older appearing brains than their nondepressed peers. However, the estimated neuroimaging-derived “brain age gap” has varied from study to study, likely driven by differences in training and testing sample (size), age range, and used modality/features. To validate our previously developed ENIGMA brain age model and the identified brain age gap, we aim to replicate the presence and effect size estimate previously found in the largest study in depression to date (N=2,126 controls & N=2,675 cases; +1.08 years [SE 0.22], Cohen’s d=0.14, 95% CI: 0.08-0.20), in independent cohorts that were not part of the original study.MethodsA previously trained brain age model (www.photon-ai.com/enigma_brainage) based on 77 FreeSurfer brain regions of interest was used to obtain unbiased brain age predictions in 751 controls and 766 persons with depression (18-75 years) from 13 new cohorts collected from 20 different scanners.ResultsOur ENIGMA MDD brain age model generalized reasonably well to controls from the new cohorts (predicted age vs. age: r = 0.73, R2=0.47, MAE=7.50 years), although the performance varied from cohort to cohort. In these new cohorts, on average, depressed persons showed a significantly higher brain age gap of +1 year (SE 0.35) (Cohen’s d□=□□.15, 95% CI: 0.05–0.25) compared with controls, highly similar to our previous finding.ConclusionsThis study further validates our previously developed ENIGMA brain age algorithm. Importantly, we replicated the brain age gap in depression with a comparable effect size. Thus, two large-scale independent mega-analyses across in total 32 cohorts and >3,400 patients and >2,800 controls worldwide show reliable but subtle effects of brain aging in adult depression.

After a break, caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the project was relaunched in early 2022 with a second working draft, which deals with certain issues in the annotation of quantification in a more satisfactory way than the original first working draft.

Abstract: Few-shot sound event detection is the task of detecting sound events, despite having only a few labelled examples of the class of interest. This framework is particularly useful in bioacoustics, where often there is a need to annotate very long recordings but the expert annotator time is limited. This paper presents an overview of the second edition of the few-shot bioacoustic sound event detection task included in the DCASE 2022 challenge. A detailed description of the task objectives, dataset, and baselines is presented, together with the main results obtained and characteristics of the submitted systems. This task received submissions from 15 different teams from which 13 scored higher than the baselines. The highest F-score was of 60% on the evaluation set, which leads to a huge improvement over last year's edition. Highly-performing methods made use of prototypical networks, transductive learning, and addressed the variable length of events from all target classes. Furthermore, by analysing results on each of the subsets we can identify the main difficulties that the systems face, and conclude that few-show bioacoustic sound event detection remains an open challenge., Comment: submitted to DCASE2022 workshop

In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated self-reported factors associated with public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic (April-May 2020). Respondents who reported identifying more strongly with their nation consistently reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies. Results were similar for representative and non-representative national samples. Study 2 (N = 42 countries) conceptually replicated the central finding using aggregate indices of national identity (obtained using the World Values Survey) and a measure of actual behaviour change during the pandemic (obtained from Google mobility reports). Higher levels of national identification prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic (r = −0.40). We discuss the potential implications of links between national identity, leadership, and public health for managing COVID-19 and future pandemics.

Abstract: The prevalence and public health burden of chronic heart failure (CHF) in Europe is steadily increasing mainly caused by the ageing population and prolonged survival of patients with CHF. Frequent hospitalizations, high morbidity and mortality rates, and enormous healthcare costs contribute to the health-related burden. However, multidisciplinary frameworks that emphasize effective long-term management and the psychological needs of the patients are sparse. The present position paper endorsed by the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC) provides a comprehensive overview on the scientific evidence of psychosocial aspects of heart failure (HF). In order to synthesize newly available information and reinforce best medical practice, information was gathered via literature reviews and consultations of experts. It covers the evidence for aetiological and prospective psychosocial risk factors and major underlying psycho-biological mechanisms. The paper elucidates the need to include psychosocial aspects in self-care concepts and critically reviews the current shortcomings of psychotherapeutic and psycho-pharmacological interventions. It also highlights the need for involvement of psychological support in device therapy for patients with HF and finally calls for better palliative care in the final stage of HF progression.

Abstract: [FR] Les enjeux societaux lies au vieillissement de la population ont place l’accompagnement des personnes âgees dependantes au cœur du debat public. Les politiques existantes permettent-elles un acces equitable et efficient aux aides medico-sociales ? Prenant appui sur deux etudes empiriques, cet article montre comment les concepts et methodes de l’economie appliquee, et notamment de l’economie de la sante, peuvent apporter des elements de reponse a ces questions. Menees dans les contextes francais et neerlandais, ces analyses montrent que les dispositifs en place ne garantissent pas necessairement l’equite horizontale dans la prise en charge, ni l’equite verticale dans les restes-a-charge. Elles mettent egalement en lumiere le role des evaluations des besoins, rouage majeur des dispositifs dependance. L’analyse de la performance de ces politiques sera facilitee par l’amelioration des systemes d’information, mais necessitera egalement des developpements en termes de modelisation, afin de mieux prendre en compte la specificite des aides medico-sociales. [EN] With population ageing, elderly care is at the heart of the public debate. Do existing policies ensure that access to long-term care is both equitable and efficient? This article shows how the concepts and methods from applied economics, and from health economics, can bring insight into these questions. It is based upon two empirical studies, which were conducted in the contexts of France and the Netherlands. The studies show that existing policies do not necessarily ensure horizontal equity in long-term care use, nor vertical equity in out-of-pocket payments. They also shed light on the role of needs assessment processes as a key cog of long-term care policies. The enrichment of information systems will certainly help further documenting the performance of such policies; yet this will also require modelling developments to better consider the specific nature of long-term care.

Abstract: Background Diffuse low-grade gliomas (DLGGs) are rare and incurable tumors. Whereas maximal safe, functional-based surgical resection is the first-line treatment, the timing and choice of further treatments (chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or combined treatments) remain controversial. Methods An online survey on the management of DLGG patients was sent to 28 expert centers from the European Low-Grade Glioma Network (ELGGN) in May 2015. It contained 40 specific questions addressing the modalities of use of chemotherapy in these patients. Results The survey demonstrated a significant heterogeneity in practice regarding the initial management of DLGG patients and the use of chemotherapy. Interestingly, radiation therapy combined with the procarbazine, CCNU (lomustine), and vincristine regimen has not imposed itself as the gold-standard treatment after surgery, despite the results of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group 9802 study. Temozolomide is largely used as first-line treatment after surgical resection for high-risk DLGG patients, or at progression. Conclusions The heterogeneity in the management of patients with DLGG demonstrates that many questions regarding the postoperative strategy and the use of chemotherapy remain unanswered. Our survey reveals a high recruitment potential within the ELGGN for retrospective or prospective studies to generate new data regarding these issues.

Abstract: International audience; We analyse the effects of retirement of one partner on time devoted to home production by both partners in a couple. Using longitudinal data on couples in Germany, we control for fixed household specific effects and allow for endogeneity of retirement using both a regression discontinuity approach and variation in the early and full retirement age across cohorts and with labour market history. Furthermore, we separately estimate the effect of retirement and the effect of lay-off due to an exogenous shock (i.e. plant closure) for each spouse. For both men and women, a transition from work to retirement significantly increases the amount of their own home production. Similar effects are found for other (layoff induced) exits from work. We find much smaller negative cross-effects of retirement or other exits from work on time spent on home production done by the male partner; the effect of the husband's retirement on the wife's home production is not statistically significant.

Abstract: International audience; Le présent volume de contes kapsiki a été recueilli à Mogodé trente-six ans après le précédent (Contes kapsiki du Cameroun). Nous avons voulu voir comment le genre avait évolué et s’était transformé en deux générations. La vie, par bien des côtés, s’est améliorée locale-ment : la mortalité infantile a sérieusement dimi-nué. La scolarisation a progressé dans tous les villages. Mogodé est devenu sous-préfecture et un lycée y est en construction. Le premier fait remarquable, dans les contes, est que le person¬nage d’Écu¬reuil demeure le grand décep¬teur autour duquel tournent les meilleures histoires ; son monde est toujours un heureux mé¬lange de bien et de mal, d’entente et de mensonge, d’amu¬sement et de violence. On relève de nouveaux thèmes, comme celui du frère qui sauve ses aînés après avoir été rejeté par eux, sur le modèle de l’histoire de Joseph trahi par ses frères. Autre fait important : naguère, l’antagoniste d’Écu¬reuil était Panthère, mais maintenant c’est devenu Hyène. Désormais, Éléphant a presque disparu, comme Scorpion et Porc-Épi, mais Tortue est devenu plus populaire.Il y a toujours quelques contes étiologiques qui expliquent l’origine d’un phénomène naturel. Par exemple : « Pourquoi Poule ne vole pas », et « Les cynocéphales et leur queue » où l’on apprend dans quelles circonstances ces singes se sont dotés d’un appendice caudal.

Abstract: We conducted a survey about the 2014 FIFA World Cup that measured attitudes about FIFA, players, and officials in 18 languages with 4600 respondents from 29 countries. Sixty percent of respondents perceived FIFA officials as being dishonest, and people from countries with less institutional corruption and stronger rule of law perceived FIFA officials as being more corrupt and less competent running the tournament than people from countries with more corruption and weaker rule of law. In contrast, respondents evaluated players as skilled and honest and match officials as competent and honest. Abstract: We study retirement incentives with an augmented reduced form option value model à la Stock and Wise (1990). We propose methodological extensions to better reflect the respective incentives faced by singles and couples. Our results show that a more comprehensive modeling of couples’ incentives leads to very different patterns of retirement incentives – particularly for women. We apply the new indicators to data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and retirement in Europe in Belgium and find two key results. First, contrary to several previous studies, we obtain a positive signed income effects. Second, we find very different retirement incentives for men and women, with little flexibility in the retirement decision for men and substantially more flexibility for women as a function of financial incentive and household composition.

Abstract: We investigate the extent to which regulations governing investment, valuation and funding affect the riskiness of defined benefit pension funds' asset allocation. We compare the regulatory frameworks of public, corporate and industry pension funds in the United States, Canada and the Netherlands over 1992–2011. Derived from panel data analysis of a unique set of asset allocation details for close to 600 funds, our results highlight that regulatory factors are more economically significant than pension funds' characteristics in shaping asset allocation. In particular, risk-based capital requirements and mark-to-market valuation are both associated with a 7% lower risky asset exposure, especially equities, regardless of market conditions. By contrast, the exposure of a pension fund subject to a 100% funding requirement does not differ significantly from that of an unconstrained pension fund during normal times, but the constrained pension fund invests 4% less in risky assets during a financial crisis. In line with theoretical predictions, we find that risk-based capital requirements and minimum funding limits have different consequences for pension funds’ risk-taking.

Abstract: We experimentally study how receiving information about tax compliance of others affects individuals' occupational choices and subsequent evading decisions. In one treatment individuals receive information about the highest tax evasion rates of others in past experimental sessions with no such social information; in another treatment they receive information about the lowest tax evasion rates observed in the past sessions with no such social information. We observe an asymmetric effect of social information on tax compliance. Whereas examples of high compliance do not have any disciplining effect, we find evidence that examples of low compliance significantly increase tax evasion for certain audit probabilities. Abstract: The world of work is changing. A century after moving from an agriculture-centered world to an Industrial one, from self-employed workers to salaried employees, our modern economies are slowly transitioning towards a new model: based on simultaneous collaboration and competition, the boundaries of contemporary organizations are blurring; information technologies are allowing individuals and companies to set base away from cities; shared working spaces are triggering new forms of collaborations between individuals and corporations.This White Paper aims at diagnosing key institutional tensions related to new work practices in the city, and putting forward questions and general propositions likely to overcome these tensions. The idea is to analyze how new collaborative communities and collaborative logics (of coworkers, hackers, makers, fabbers, and teleworkers) and more traditional collective activity and modes of decision making (of the city and corporations in the city) can jointly contribute to the co-production of harmonious new ways of life and new ways of working. Reinventing joint public policies, corporate strategies and citizenship appear here as a key stake where usual dichotomies between private-public, collaborative-non-collaborative economy, traditional citizens and hacktivists need to be overcome.We thus identify in this document a set of controversies around four strong political issues both for the city and the field of management, linked to the emergence of collaborative spaces:o Topic 1. Space, territories, and public policy on collaborative communities in the city;o Topic 2. Collaborative communities and their roles in education in the city;o Topic 3. Business models and their communication in the context of collaborative spaces and collaborative communities;o Topic 4. Collaborative spaces and their roles in innovation and entrepreneurial dynamics at the level of the cityBeyond our controversies, we underline three paradoxes which should be at the heart of new questions for policy-makers, hacktivists, actors of collaborative movements, and citizens (distinctions which may become less and less relevant in the years to come):o Social versus economic orientations of both the city and the collaborative communities it can host;o Critical/revolutionary versus more incremental relationships between cities, organizations, societies, collaborative communities, and new work practices;o Local territory (district/proximate area) grounded versus broader city-oriented or connectivity related issues about collaborative movement and new work practices.To balance these tensions, we elaborate seven general areas of questions and propositions for all stakeholders:o The generalization of infra-organization (physical collaborative platforms);o The emergence of “ ‘inclusive lab’ labels” (elaborated and managed by collaborative communities themselves);o A renewed academic presence in the city and in the country-side (with more virtual, distributed and ‘experiential’ logics);o Ephemeral and mobile labs managed jointly by public, collaborative and private stakeholders;o “Open open” innovation in public and semi-public spaces of the city;o Rise of mega-spaces for creativity in the city;o Development of a global infrastructure for coworkers, mobile workers and teleworkers.These are directions we see as particularly promising to manage the tensions, paradoxes and stakes explicated by our controversies.We hope that these questions and propositions will inspire both academics, politicians, hacktivists and entrepreneurs for future collaborations on the study and joint transformation of public policies, corporate strategies, and citizenship.

Abstract: Inferential statistics teach us that we need a random probability sample to infer from a sample to the general population. In online survey research, however, volunteer access panels, in which respondents self-select themselves into the sample, dominate the landscape. Such panels are attractive due to their low costs. Nevertheless, recent years have seen increasing numbers of debates about the quality, in particular about errors in the representativeness and measurement, of such panels. In this article, we describe four probability-based online and mixed-mode panels for the general population, namely, the Longitudinal Internet Studies for the Social Sciences (LISS) Panel in the Netherlands, the German Internet Panel (GIP) and the GESIS Panel in Germany, and the Longitudinal Study by Internet for the Social Sciences (ELIPSS) Panel in France. We compare them in terms of sampling strategies, offline recruitment procedures, and panel characteristics. Our aim is to provide an overview to the scientific community of the availability of such data sources to demonstrate the potential strategies for recruiting and maintaining probability-based online panels to practitioners and to direct analysts of the comparative data collected across these panels to methodological differences that may affect comparative estimates.

Abstract: International audience; Existing studies show that individuals who retire replace some private consumption with home production, but do not consider joint behavior of couples. Here we analyze the causal effect of retirement of each partner on hours of home production for both partners in a couple. Our identification strategy exploits the earliest age retirement laws in France, enabling a fuzzy regression discontinuity approach. We find that own retirement significantly increases own hours of home production and the effect is larger for men than for women. Moreover, retirement of the female partner significantly reduces male hours of home production but not vice versa.

Abstract: International audience; Previous research on the allocation of scarce resources shows that when people are assigned labels of leader or follower in their group, leaders allocate more of the scarce resources to themselves than followers do. In three laboratory studies, we examine the idea that how people are selected for the leader role (i.e. election or appointment) determines whether leaders take more or equal shares (relative to followers) from a common resource. In a first experiment, we show that participants were more accepting of norm violating behavior by an appointed versus elected leader. In a second experiment, we show that when participants were assigned to a leader or follower role, allocations of appointed leaders differed significantly from those of elected leaders and followers, whereas there was no difference between the two latter conditions. Moreover, elected leaders were shown to feel more social responsibility than both appointed leaders and followers. In a final experiment, we show that when participants were primed with the concept of social responsibility (relative to a neutral condition) no difference in allocations between appointed and elected leaders emerged.

Abstract: International audience; Humanitarian crisis require a responsive and agile response. The number of professional and volunteer organization involved in the response to humanitarian disasters has increased over the past year, making coordination more important than ever before. This paper discusses the main issues of Humanitarian Disaster Management (HDM) coordination and the different modes applied on the field. We argue that while these challenges have been addressed by scientific literature with dedicated solutions, there is still a considerable gap between humanitarian best practice and academic state of the art.This paper proposes a field-oriented methodology to bridge this gap. We analyze the findings from field research on the Typhoon Haiyan response (Philippines, 2013) and deduce practitioners’ requirements for HDM coordination support systems. Then we suggest a research agenda from a gap analysis comparing requirements with the existing solutions and the scientific approaches.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we present the design and evaluation of culturally specific mobile learning applications, designed as a tool to encourage social interaction in autistic children. These applications were designed for Pakistani children keep their cultural context in mind. We performed longitudinal evaluation (around eight weeks) of these applications at an autistic school in Pakistan. Our initial results, based on pre and post evaluation questionnaires and video analysis of social interactions, showed that the applications had a positive effect on the development of socio-emotional skills of children and were appreciated not only by children but also by the teachers.

Abstract: Le succès des entreprises ayant une stratégie d'expansion à l'international passe par l'identification de marchés cibles géographiquement délimités. Jusqu'à présent, les entreprises utilisaient les frontières des pays pour délimiter ces marchés cibles. Ceci avait pour conséquences l'utilisation de segments facilement accessibles et de stratégies d'entrée efficientes en termes de coût. Pourtant, de telles stratégies de segmentation au niveau des pays pourraient ne plus être appropriées. En effet, la tendance à la globalisation des marchés et la fragmentation des besoins des consommateurs au sein d'un même pays expliquent l'utilisation croissante d'une segmentation transnationale des consommateurs. Dans une telle segmentation, les consommateurs de différents pays sont regroupés en fonction de leurs similarités en termes de besoins, et les frontières des pays sont ignorées. Dans cet article, nous proposons une nouvelle méthodologie qui améliore l'identification de segments spatiaux grâce à l'utilisation de données sur la localisation des consommateurs. Notre méthodologie permet d'identifier des segments spatiaux en fonction des besoins des consommateurs tout en utilisant également des données spatiales au sein des pays. Nous pensons qu'il est probable que les segments de consommateurs suivent une structure spatiale; c'est pourquoi nous avons développé une approche bayésienne hiérarchique en spécifiant différents niveaux de dépendance spatiale. Plutôt que d'assigner les consommateurs aux segments, nous avons identifié des segments spatiaux qui sont composés de régions prédéfinies. Nous avons développé quatre modèles, chacun correspondant à un niveau de dépendance spatiale différent. Deux modèles correspondent aux approches actuelles de segmentation internationale : d'une part les modèles d' indépendance spatiale, et d'autre part les modèles de segmentation au niveau des pays. Les deux autres modèles sont originaux : ce sont les modèles d' association spatiale au sein des segments et de contiguïté spatiale des segments. Ces modèles prennent en compte l'hétérogénéité intra-segment lors d'une segmentation multi-attributs. Ainsi, les applications en termes de segmentation d'un marché à partir des réponses des consommateurs sont nombreuses. Nous montrons que les modèles peuvent être estimés en utilisant un échantillonnage de Gibbs. Pour le modèle de contiguïté spatiale, une procédure d'échantillonnage par rejet est proposée. Afin de déterminer la performance du modèle de segmentation spatial le plus restrictif, nous avons effectué une analyse de données factices. Pour ce faire, nous avons comparé les résultats d'une situation où aucune structure spatiale n'est sous-jacente aux données et ceux d'une situation où une structure spatiale est sous-jacente. Nous avons analysé des données, de propriétés connues, avec les modèles de contiguïté spatiale et d'indépendance spatiale des segments. Les résultats montrent que lorsqu'une structure spatiale est sous-jacente aux données, le modèle de contiguïté spatiale améliore la qualité d'estimation des paramètres. Lorsque ce n'est pas le cas, le modèle d'indépendance spatiale peut fournir de meilleurs résultats. Nous illustrons empiriquement notre approche dans le contexte de la distribution internationale. Pour ce faire, nous utilisons les données d'un sondage effectué auprès des consommateurs de sept pays de l'Union européenne. Nous avons utilisé un instrument de mesure de l'image des magasins. Cet outil est fondé sur le modèle multi-attributs de formation de l'image d'un magasin. L'évaluation globale des magasins est la variable dépendante et les perceptions de l'image des magasins sont les variables explicatives. Les variables de segmentation sont les importances (latentes) données aux différents attributs de l'image d'un magasin, c'est-à-dire la qualité des produits, la qualité du service, l'assortiment, la politique de prix et l'emplacement du magasin. Nous pensons que l'importance accordée à chaque attribut de l'image d'un magasin donné va probablement afficher des variations spatiales. Nous nous attendons à trouver une agrégation spatiale voire une contiguïté spatiale des segments. Nous appliquons les quatre modèles de segmentation spatiale aux données sur l'image des magasins. Le modèle de segmentation au niveau des pays est le moins soutenu par les données. Même le modèle d'indépendance spatiale offre un meilleur ajustement. Ceci confirme que les préférences des consommateurs sont transnationales. Les deux modèles ayant le meilleur ajustement avec les données sont le modèle de contiguïté spatiale et le modèle d'association spatiale. Même si les différences entre les modèles ne sont pas très importantes, celles-ci sont confirmées par deux indices d'ajustement différents. Des résultats détaillés sont présentés pour le modèle de contiguïté spatiale. Nous avons identifié cinq segments spatiaux transnationaux. Ces segments correspondent à des stratégies de positionnement différentes en termes de distribution. De plus, les estimations de l'importance des attributs et de l'emplacement des magasins confirment la validité de construit.

Abstract: International audience; Earlier studies suggest that income taxation may affect not only labour supply but also domestic work. Here we investigate the impact of income taxation on partners' labour supply and housework, using data for France that taxes incomes of married couples jointly. We estimate a household utility model in which the marginal utilities of leisure and housework of both partners are modelled as random coefficients, depending on observed and unobserved characteristics. We conclude that both partners' market and housework hours are responsive to changes in the tax system. A policy simulation suggests that replacing joint taxation of married spouses' incomes with separate taxation would increase the husband's housework hours by 1.3% and reduce his labour supply by 0.8%. The wife's market hours would increase by 3.7%, and her housework hours would fall by 2.0%.

Abstract: We investigate the relationship between rule-based versus risk-based regulatory choices in different countries and the real investment performance of their pension funds. Pension systems in countries with more mature risk-based regulatory regimes tend to demonstrate superior investment performance. The benefit of implementing risk-based regulation is more pronounced in countries with low regulatory quality. The core of rule-based regulations, i.e., quantitative investment limits, has no significant impact on the Sharpe ratio of pension investment returns.

Abstract: International audience; Using the most comprehensive publicly available data to-date, we study the effect of three aspects of pension regulation (namely quantitative investment restrictions, minimum return or benefit guarantee, and the type of supervising authority) on risk-adjusted funded pension performance in 27 countries. Regulatory strictness’ influence on the Sharpe ratio of investment return depends on a country’s level of economic development. In emerging market economies, existence of quantitative investment restrictions across asset classes adversely affects risk-adjusted returns. This impact is more severe if higher investment limits are imposed on equities and foreign assets, as opposed to on bonds. Having a minimum benefit or return guarantee, as well as having a specialized supervising authority has no statistically significant effect on the risk-adjusted returns regardless of economic development.

Abstract: Speech imitation appears to be one of the most fundamental aspects of human vocal behavior. It has been suggested that it plays an important role in speech development and may also form one of the key mechanisms that underlie the emergence and evolution of human languages. Starting early on, infants appear to be matching the prosodic and micro-prosodic properties of their mothers' speech in child-mother interactions. Also in the course of a conversational interaction between mature talkers, the behavior of each talker tends to become more similar-sounding to that of the conversational partner. The behavioral tendency shown by humans to imitate others may be connected at the brain level with the presence of a mirror neuron system, whose discovery has raised important issues about the role that this action-observation matching system may fulfill in many different domains, from sensorimotor integration to the understanding of others' behavior. The focus of this Research Topic is the fast-growing body of research on imitation phenomena in speech. We aim to bring together researchers with a large variety of scientific backgrounds (linguistics, speech sciences, psycholinguistics, experimental sociolinguistics, neurosciences, cognitive sciences) with a view to improving our understanding of the role of imitation in the production, comprehension and acquisition of spoken language. The Research Topic will also aim to assess current research on the brain and cognitive underpinnings of imitative behavior. The questions that can be explored in the submitted articles and communications include the following: When is phonetic imitation an automatic process and when does it represent a conscious effort of the talkers, designed to fit the social context of the interaction? Which components of the speech signal are imitated in different contexts/conditions? What are the causes of individual differences in the ability to imitate phonetic properties of both L1 and L2 (e.g., phonetic talent, dominant pitch perception mode, auditory memory etc.)? What computational techniques can be successfully employed to characterize imitation in speech, both in terms of static characterization (comparing short fragments of speech), as well as from a nonsegmental perspective (comparing evolution of different features over time)? How do visual cues interact with auditory cues, e.g., with respect to the degree of imitation and the speed of processing? What are the neural correlates of speech imitation?

Abstract: International audience; Digital imaging and signal processing technologies offer new methods for inkjet and photographic media engineers and manufacturers, and those responsible for product quality control, to classify and characterize printing materials surface textures using new and more quantitative methods. This paper presents a collaborative project to systematically and semi-automatically characterize the surface texture of inkjet media. These methods have applications in product design and specification, and in manufacturing quality control. Surface texture is a critical feature in the manufacture, marketing and use of inkjet papers, especially those used for fine art printing. Raking light reveals texture through a stark rendering of highlights and shadows. Though raking light photomicrographs effectively document surface features of inkjet paper, the sheer number and diversity of textures prohibits efficient visual classification. This work provides evidence that automatic, computer-based classification of texture documented with raking light photomicrographs is feasible by demonstrating an encouraging degree of success sorting a set of 120 photomicrographs made from diverse samples of inkjet paper and canvas available in the market from 2000 through 2011. The samples used for this study were drawn from the Wilhelm Analog and Digital Color Print Materials Reference Collection. Using this dataset, four university teams applied different image processing strategies for automatic feature extraction and degree of similarity quantification. All four approaches were successful in detecting strong affinities among similarity groupings built into the dataset as well as identifying outliers. The creation and deployment of the algorithms was carried out by the teams without prior knowledge of the distributions of similarities and outliers. These results indicate that automatic classification of inkjet paper based on texture photomicrographs is feasible. To encourage the development of additional classification schemes, the 120 inkjet sample “training” dataset used in this work is available to other academic researchers at www.PaperTextureID.org.

Abstract: International audience; We describe some first results of an empirical study describing how social media and SMS were used in coordinating humanitarian relief after the Haiti Earthquake in January 2010. Current information systems for crisis management are increasingly incorporating information obtained from citizens transmitted via social media and SMS. This information proves particularly useful at the aggregate level. However it has led to some problems: information overload and processing difficulties, variable speed of information delivery, managing volunteer communities, and the high risk of receiving inaccurate or incorrect information.

Abstract: This paper provides optimal testing procedures for the m-sample null hypothesis of Common Principal Components (CPC) under possibly non Gaussian and heterogenous elliptical densities. We first establish, under very mild assumptions that do not require finite moments of order four, the local asymptotic normality (LAN) of the model. Based on that result, we show that the pseudo-Gaussian test proposed in Hallin et al. (2010a) is locally and asymptotically optimal under Gaussian densities. We also show how to compute its local powers and asymptotic relative efficiencies (AREs). A numerical evaluation of those AREs, however, reveals that, while remaining valid, this test is poorly efficient away from the Gaussian. Moreover, it still requires finite moments of order four. We therefore propose rank-based procedures that remain valid under any possibly heterogenous m-tuple of elliptical densities, irrespective of any moment assumptions—in elliptical families, indeed, principal components naturally can be based on the scatter matrices characterizing the density contours, hence do not require finite variances. Those rank-based tests are not only validity-robust in the sense that they survive arbitrary elliptical population densities: we show that they also are efficiency-robust, in the sense that their local powers do not deteriorate under non-Gaussian alternatives. In the homogeneous case, the normal-score version of our tests uniformly dominates, in the Pitman sense, the optimal pseudo-Gaussian test. Theoretical results are obtained via a nonstandard application of Le Cam’s methodology in the context of curved LAN experiments. Abstract: This paper considers the problem of how to price a conspicuous product when the economy is in a recession that disrupts capital markets. A conspicuous product in this context is a luxury good for which demand is increasing in brand image. Brand image here means the ability of a consumer to impress observers by conspicuously displaying consumption of the good. Brand image is built up when the good is priced high enough to make it exclusive, and eroded if the good is discounted. Recession is modeled as having two effects: it reduces demand and it freezes capital markets so borrowing is not possible. In pricing the conspicuous product the firm faces the following trade-off. Reducing price helps maintain sales volume and cash flow in the face of reduced demand, but it also damages brand image and thus long-term demand. The paper analyzes the firm's pricing policy facing scenarios of mild, intermediate and severe recessions, while taking the threat of bankruptcy into account. For an intermediate recession the optimal solution is history-dependent. The results have implications for policy interventions in capital markets and for timing of mergers and acquisitions.

Abstract Although several studies in the wide body of literature on technology transfer have hinted at differences across industries, this still remains an understudied issue. Our study addresses this topic and considers to what degree technology transfer processes differ across different industrial sectors. To that end, we study to what extent technology transfer processes differ along both types of transfer mechanisms and key barriers inhibiting the transfer process. Based on a survey of Dutch practitioners on both sides of the transfer process, we test a number of hypotheses that differentiate between science-based regimes and development-based regimes. While our findings confirm our hypotheses concerning differences between the regimes regarding the use of specific transfer mechanisms, we also find that both regimes share a number of mechanisms that are similar. In addition, our findings show a remarkable degree of similarity among barriers inhibiting the process. We discuss these findings within the context of the broader literature and formulate policy implications.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: To describe variation in staging and primary treatment by hospital characteristics including type and volume and region in patients with early breast cancer (BC) in the Netherlands, 2003-2006 after completion of national guidelines in 2002.METHODS: All patients newly diagnosed with invasive BC in 2003-2006 and recorded in the Netherlands Cancer Registry were included (n = 51 354). Multivariable logistic regression analyses examined the influence of patient and hospital characteristics, also by region, on type of breast surgery, axillary lymph node dissection (ALND), sentinel node procedure (SNP), and adjuvant irradiation and/or systemic treatment.RESULTS: Patients CONCLUSION: With detailed evidence-based national guidelines since 2002 the considerable regional and hospital variation in staging procedures and primary treatment among newly diagnosed patients with early breast cancer in the Netherlands decreased markedly, suggesting the presence of late adaptors rather than specific hospital characteristics.

Abstract: Consider the location-scale regression model Y = m(X) + sigma(X)epsilon, where the error epsilon is independent of the covariate X, and m and sigma are smooth but unknown functions. We construct tests for the validity of this model and show that the asymptotic limits of the proposed test statistics are distribution free. Abstract: International audience; In two studies, we investigate the effects of group size (un)certainty and social value orientations in common resource dilemmas. By focusing on this largely unexplored type of environmental uncertainty, we show that, in contrast to the often replicated finding that resource size uncertainty leads to over-harvesting in common resource dilemmas, group size uncertainty is not necessarily detrimental to the collective interest. Furthermore, we argue and show that whereas under group size certainty people base their individual harvests on the equal division rule, under group size uncertainty they base their harvests on their own social value orientations: whereas under group size certainty both proselfs and pro-socials harvest about an equal share of the common resource, under uncertainty prosocials show self-restraint in order to further their group's outcomes.
