This publication presents the abstracts of What’s Past is Prologue: The NewsEye International Conference organised by the consortium of the EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme project NewsEye: A Digital Investigator for Historical Newspapers. This conference, which was held online on the 16th and 17th of March 2021, featured four keynote speakers and over thirty presenters hailing from eleven countries. Spanning from May 2018 to January 2022, NewsEye is a research project advancing the state of the art and introducing new concepts, methods and tools for digital humanities by providing enhanced access to historical newspapers for a wide range of users. Hence, the conference theme Towards a future of interdisciplinary collaboration between Cultural Heritage, Digital Humanities, Computer Science and Data Science reflects certain aspects of the NewsEye project itself. The NewsEye consortium is composed of three national libraries and eight research groups based in Austria, Finland, France and Germany, which have each contributed specialised knowledge in the aforementioned subjects.

In this paper, we use the concept of workflow to discuss integrated interdisciplinary collaboration. We argue that interdisciplinary teams can benefit from an understanding of the workflows and traditions of each of the disciplines involved and provide a schematic synthesis of typical workflow viewpoints of the disciplines, highlighting their similarities and differences. Integrated approaches are needed to successfully exploit the full potential of digitized sources. Therefore, we elaborate on research steps and tasks where all fields come together and eventually propose an integrated digital hermeneutics workflow for research work on digital cultural heritage.

Die in diesem Bericht beschriebenen Designempfehlungen knüpfen an ausgewählte mediendidaktische Möglichkeiten der Gestaltung interaktiver digitaler Archivumgebungen sowie an gestalterische und archivpädagogische Grundsätze an. Sie bieten vielfältige Anhaltspunkte für die Konzeption von Erkundungs- und Lernumgebungen für Archive, Museen und Sammlungen. Zugleich spiegeln sie einige Erfahrungen wider, die im Rahmen des DigiVis-Projektes an der Universität Innsbruck gemacht wurden. Teil zwei dieses Berichts zeigt Möglichkeiten der visuellen und mulitmedialen Darstellung von Kulturerbe auf. Dabei wird der aktuelle Stand der visuellen Aufarbeitung digitaler Archive, Bilbliotheken usw. genauso zusammengefasst wie die im Projekt entstandenen Ideen und Konzepte.

Since 2013, a part of the Ernst von Glasersfeld Archive – which is located at the Brenner Archive in Innsbruck/Austria – can be used in a digital form. In our interdisciplinary research project (DigiVis) at the Department of Media, Society and Communication at the University of Innsbruck, this digital collection served as a showcase for the development of different digital and didactic approaches for written, pictorial and other sources. In order to gain access to the content, Ernst von Glasersfeld’s academic papers were examined and analysed with regard to argumentative structures and discourse strands. We used MediaWiki as basis for the storage, annotation and structuring of the texts. Humanities scholars, computer scientists as well as a data visualization expert collaborated to develop methods of visualisation, structuring and simplification in order to provide a ‘bird’s-eye view’ of the complex argumentation structures and discourses of Glasersfeld’s texts.

The annotation guidelines for the Ernst-von-Glasersfeld-Archive were developed within the project DigiVis: Digitization and Visualization of Archives and Collections and have build the basis for the visualization of a selected collection of Glasersfeld texts. This interdisciplinary project has been funded as a Lighthouse-project in the Field of Digitization by the Tyrolean Regional Government.

This paper describes the 2019 edition of the Helsinki Digital Humanities Hackathon from the perspective of two of its participants. As (digital) historians they were part of the group that investigated the historyof medical advertisements in British nineteenth-century newspapers. The paper describes the research process, as well as the data and methods used during the research. The paper also considers the Hackathon as a laboratory for Digital Humanities research and re ects on the nature of the collaboration as experienced during the Hackathon. As such, the paper describes the challenges of multidisciplinary research and identifies the factors that hinder and foster collaboration in a Digital Humanities context.

South Tyrolean���s Mosque conflicts since the 1990sLines of argumentation in the newspaper ���Dolomiten��� and ���Alto Adige��� ��The following paper is about the perception of mosque buildings in the daily South Tyrolean newspaper, the German-language ���Dolomiten��� and the Italian-language ���Alto Adige���. The particle has two aims, for one, it gives an historical overview about the mosque debates in South Tyro from 1990 until today. Building on that, the paper offers an analysis, and particularly a comparison, of argumentation paradigms present in the two South Tyrolean newspapers.
