Given a field K , we investigate which subgroups of the group Aut A K 2 of polynomial automorphisms of the plane are linear or not. The results are contrasted. The group Aut A K 2 itself is nonlinear, except if K is finite, but it contains some large subgroups, of "codimension-five" or more, which are linear. This phenomenon is specific to dimension two: it is easy to prove that any natural "finite-codimensional" subgroup of Aut A K 3 is nonlinear, even for a finite field K. When ch K = 0 , we also look at a similar questions for f.g. subgroups, and the results are again disparate. The group Aut A K 2 has a one-related f.g. subgroup which is not linear. Photographically illustrated handbooks became popular in the 1890s and supplemented the official Annual Reports and Blue Books. Handbooks were both an instrument of propaganda and a prospectus for potential investors and settlers and served a documentary purpose by providing a glimpse of a colony's natural resources, economy, European life and Indigenous peoples. The handbook phenomenon, globally, has been largely overlooked by historians, despite adding to the complex archive generated by mid-century colonies. This article analyses the way photographs operated in the handbooks, particularly the inclusions and omissions in the many editions and reprints in the 1924–43 period, to provide insights into the ways a British colony – Fiji – was being remade and reshaped by capitalism and colonialism. Peter Litwan: The Epitaph of Sebastian Castellio in the Cloisters of Basel Cathedral Observations and Comments on the Wording and Transmission The epitaph in the cloisters of Basel Cathedral that grateful students donated to their Greek language instructor, Sebastian Castellio (1515 - 1563), pioneer of the idea of religious tolerance, has long since disappeared. Its text was passed on as an appendix to the edition of Dialogorum sacrorum libri quatuor of 1565 and in many collections of epitaphs and historical monographs, above all of the 16th and 17th century, and further on way into the 19th century. Since the respective wordings differ at times, an analysis of the oldest testimony of 1565 and the comparison with later printings furnishes proof of what the original wording must have been. By doing so, above all the extraordinary opening and the stylistic construction is being paid tribute to and the existence of a single sheet print is being discussed. The remarkable result of the analysis is that in the later editions of Dialogi the wording of the epitaph was mostly rendered correctly, whereas the printings pretending to have copied the text from the original epitaph in the cloisters are less reliable. Although to this day the editors of Treny (Laments) largely admitted that the 1583 reprinting was revised by Jan Kochanowski, the author of the paper argues that the 1580 first issue is more accurate and that the poet by no means took part in the preparation of this masterpiece's last impression before his death. Evidence to support his claim is provided by a detailed comparison of the republication with the unique first version purchased by Waldemar Łysiak that the writer rendered available in 2001 (two copies known before the World War II perished). Collation of the two specimens reveals various discrepancies (e.g. errors in rhythm and rhyming) which makes the researcher consider editio princeps as more diligently prepared and closer to Kochanowski's language habits. I was the ugly duckling, out of place no matter where I went. When I was about three, my parents made a decision that largely determined (directly and indirectly) the course of my life. They had earlier decided that they would raise their kids to speak both Korean and English. That was no easy decision considering it was Portland, Oregon, less than five years after the Immigration Act of 1965 and with practically no other Koreans in their community. They quickly reneged on their decision when I came running home one day in tears. Unaware of the difference, I had said something to my neighborhood friends in Korean, and they made fun of me. To this day, my parents regret their response, to change and raise us speaking only English, even though they made it to protect us. It did not matter that I was U.S. American by birth and Korean by heritage; American societal pressures had forced the change. I had similar experiences when later I lived in Korea. Experiences there forced me to choose between being Korean and being American. All of this held me in a marginalized space and kept me feeling that there was something wrong with me. I know something now that has given me peace. I wish I had known it earlier in life. That something can best be described as having permission to live with a multivocal identity. In 1865, Jean Paul Migne published in Patrologia Graeca 79, the four books of Nilus of Ancyra's letters, essentially reprinting the 1668 edition of Leon Allatius. To this day, Migne's edition provides the main access to Nile's correspondence. In 1969, Jean Gribomont analyzed Allatius' editorial work on the basis of the manuscript Ottobonianus 250, which was the basis for the editor's publication of the letters. This manuscript lacked the first book of letters, while other available manuscripts had a different arrangement of letters. A rather chaotic attempt was made to reconstruct the whole. All the collected manuscripts were artificially combined into a single whole, in a peculiar order. In such a confusion, duplicates were added to the correspondence and, moreover, some inauthentic texts could have entered. Due to the lack of sufficient data, it is impossible to decide what was the role of the editors who probably gave their own shape to this correspondence. The letters contain many borrowings from other authors: in the form of a quotation, paraphrase or perfunctory allusion. In this article, the author reviews the research on the issue of loanwords in Nil's letters. Finally, he lists all the borrowings identified by the following researchers: Josef Fessler, Sebastian Haidacher, Karl Heussi, Jean Gribomont, Manfred Kertsch, and Luciano Bossina. To this list are twenty-one borrowings identified by him in Nil's letters, many of which come from John Chrysostom and the Cappadocian Fathers. New identifications do not give rise to new views on the authorship or redaction of the letters. The paper is devoted to a mixing of the dash with other punctuation marks, characteristic to the 19th c. texts, today hardly known procedure, absent from punctuation rules and analyses, and thus hard to interpret when one faces somewhat older texts. The author carried out a search query of about 800 publications referring to language, starting from the year 1700, and established that the procedure of mixing the dash with other punctuation marks was reported by 20 grammarians, in sum in 59 publications (including reprints) in the period 1830-1935. Lesiakowski also discusses what the authors wrote about the problem, what types of mixing they listed, how they interpreted and evaluated them as regards the correct usage rules, which meaning they attributed to them and if they employed them in their own writings. Current work to identify the core teaching practices that should be included in teacher education curriculum is a part of a long-standing tradition of reform in American teacher education. This article situates the proposals of Hiebert and Morris and the contemporary work to which it is linked within this historical tradition and identifies several issues that need to be addressed by this current work. These include the task of developing a system that unlike performance-based systems in the past is evidence-based, manageable, and sustainable, and that does not ignore important aspects of good teaching. Situated in the context of Israeli in-service education, this article explores the development of the author's understanding of the process of learning to mentor from the acquisition of communicative competencies (as identified in an initial study), toward a more discursive view of the process as "participation in competing discourses of practice" (as identified in subsequent studies). Recent work has revealed the intricacies and complexities entailed in translating from one language (teaching) to another (mentoring), often positioning mentors as "lost in translation." Specifically, studies shed light on issues of morality, expertise, context, and conditions for learning to mentor. To discuss the author's evolving understandings, she attends to three interrelated themes: Mentoring as connected to teaching, mentoring as distinct from teaching, and conditions for learning to mentor. Finally, the author addresses the question, So what? to consolidate her emergent understandings of the metaphor, framed as assertions for thinking about the practice of mentoring. This paper describes the work of a nine-college consortium that aimed to address the minority teacher shortage. First, the consortium's beginnings, aims, and activities are presented. Then the collaborative process is analyzed in terms of nine factors that have been identified in the literature as contributors to effective collaboration: (a) commitment of institutional officials, (b) mutual needs and interests, (c) clarity about goals, roles, and control, (d) sufficient time, (e) energy, (f) effective communication, (g) resources, (h) leadership, and (i) ongoing evaluation. The analysis resulted in the identification of three additional factors that support successful collaboration: (a) levels of collaboration, (b) continual redefinition, and (c) avoidance of interinstitutional conflicts. Despite longstanding criticisms of teacher education, the weight of substantial evidence indicates that teachers who have had more preparation for teaching are more confident and successful with students than those who have had little or none. Recent evidence also indicates that reforms of teacher education creating more tightly integrated programs with extended clinical preparation interwoven with coursework on learning and teaching produce teachers who are both more effective and more likely to enter and stay in teaching. An important contribution of teacher education is its development of teachers' abilities to examine teaching from the perspective of learners who bring diverse experiences and frames of reference to the classroom. The main aim of the present research is to examine the effect of progressive deinking and reprinting on the paper properties of inkjet-printed paper. A typical office copy paper was selected as the base paper and printed using an inkjet printer having at least 50 % ink coverage. Thereafter, it was deinked and reprinted thrice, and its paper properties were measured. The paper properties that were measured were roughness, porosity, opacity, brightness, specular gloss, whiteness, bursting strength, tearing resistance, tensile strength, contact angle, deinkability efficiency, visible dirt area, ink elimination factors, and color differences. The results showed that in comparison to the base paper, the progressively deinked and reprinted paper samples showed an increase in roughness, porosity, opacity, tearing resistance, dirt area, and color difference. On the other hand, there was a decrease in brightness, gloss, whiteness, burst strength, tensile strength, contact angle, deinkability efficiency, and ink elimination factors. Incorporation of catalytically active metallic sites into the framework of silica-based zeolites is highly efficient for design of active, selective, and stable heterogeneous catalysts, but there are still many challenges for this kind of preparation such as the presence of aggregated metallic sites due to the alkaline media in the synthesis, relatively low concentration of these metallic sites in the zeolite frameworks, and difficulty for morphological control of metallosilicate zeolites. To overcome these issues, it has been developed new strategies for synthesis of metallosilicate zeolites such as introduction of additives to adjust crystallization rate, addition of chelating agents to form heteroatom complexes, growth of zeolite crystals along with targeted directions, zeolite transformation, and heteroatom replacements. In this review, the recent progresses for syntheses of metallosilicate zeolites are concisely summarized. In addition, the fundamental principles are briefly discussed for the formation of the metallosilicate zeolites. This review should be helpful for design and preparation of the heteroatom-substituted silica-based zeolites as highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts. Iconic photographs are symbolically dense images characterized by broad circulation over time and recognition by large publics. Following this definition, we track the republication and reframing, over nearly 70 years, of 15 news photographs previously identified as most recognized by the Israeli public. Distinguishing between "discrete icons" (singular photographs of particular scenes) and "aggregate icons" (where several variants of the same event are continually reproduced), our quantitative and qualitative analyses show that iconic images are both resistant to the passing of time and kept in motion through renewed media use. We identify four "iconic modalities," corresponding to different ways in which iconic status and meanings are achieved, transformed, or denied through republishing and reframing. This concept improves our understanding of iconicity as a fluctuating material and symbolic process, whereby the circulation of images not only produces shifts in meaning, but constructs powerful aggregative frameworks of collective visual memory. This article examines Francisco P. Ramírez’s editorial practice of altering reprint poems culled from periodicals, books, and anthologies from across the Hispanophone world and reprinted in Southern California. By isolating El Clamor Público’s poems, mapping their potential citational provenance and place of publication, and comparing reproductions to originals, I show how Ramírez’s reprint practices shaped authorship and genre in his paper. I propose Ramírez’s reprint practices are important examples of the print culture norm of editing reprint poems to centralize the reading public’s interests and experiences. Ramírez’s reprint practices made the poems more understandable to and relevant for a California audience while at the same time facilitating an intellectual and cultural sense of belonging that resists the reproduction of knowledge and aesthetics from a non-California epistemology. This paper, originally printed 50 years ago, was the first to provide a detailed discussion of the possible design of an interferometric gravitational-wave detector. In particular, unlike any previous paper based on a similar idea, it provides a detailed analysis of the noise sources and their mitigation. Since the work eventually led to opening up the whole field of gravitational-wave astronomy, as described in the accompanying editorial note, with many exciting results already, and brought the author a share in a Nobel Prize, it is one of the most significant papers in the Golden Oldies series. The December 1872 death of Hawaiian monarch Kamehameha V spurred renewed interest among U.S. citizens and politicians alike in the annexation of the Hawaiian Islands. To satisfy the public's increased curiosity about Hawai'i, in January 1873 the New York Tribune sought testimony in the form of two letters from a well-known expert on the islands: Mark Twain, who had gained nationwide fame based his popular comic lecture "Our Fellow Savages of the Sandwich Islands," which he delivered across the United States and abroad between 1866 and 1873. Between January and March of 1873 at least seventy newspapers and magazines reprinted excerpts of Mark Twain's Tribune letters. This article considers how these reprinted excerpts decontextualize or mischaracterize Mark Twain's insights as well as what they reveal about the American reading public's views of Mark Twain as both a comedian and as a serious expert on Hawai'i in the early 1870s. Ervin Bauer (1890–1938) made historical contributions to contemporary biology, provided a new definition of life, defined the contents of theoretical biology. He worked in different countries, perturbed by deep historical events. These historical events necessarily impacted his fate and finally led to the violent loss of his life and the life of his wife. His work and with it his theory of life had a no less complicated history than the history of his personal life. Bauer's main work "Theoretical Biology" was published in 1935 in Russian. The author and his wife Stefánia became victims of the Great Purge. They were executed in 1938, all their publications were banned and most copies of "Theoretical Biology" destroyed. Ervin and Stefánia Bauer were rehabilitated in 1956 but renewed publication of Bauer's works was delayed. The first reprint edition of "Theoretical Biology" of 1967 was not in Russian, but was a translation into Hungarian, the native language of Bauer. The first Russian reprint of "Theoretical Biology", in which the original Russian chapters are followed by short English summaries, was published in Hungary in 1982. This edition was prepared by Hungarian and Russian scientists. The best-known Russian edition of "Theoretical Biology" was published in 2002 in St. Petersburg.
