Background Sexuality research on the sexual practices of women who have sex with women (WSW) has thus far mostly centered on risk factors and addressed a limited number of practices, with a focus on oral sex and insertive vaginal sex.Aim This study arises from the need to fill such a significant gap, which prevents researchers, clinicians, and policy makers from being adequately up-to-date on the sexual habits and tendencies of this population.Methods A multiple-choice questionnaire was completed by 723 WSW with a mean (SD) age of 29.14 (6.94) years.Outcomes The survey included closed questions on sexual practices, including genital and oral sex, but also nongenital sexual contact (petting and intercrural sex), anal sex, and kinky practices.Results The most common sexual practices were self-masturbation (99.03%), oral sex (performed or received, 98.20%), and insertive genital sex (performed or received, 89.07%). Half of our sample had tried kinky practices at least once in a lifetime (51.31%). Respondents tended to experiment sexually more with stable partners rather than with casual ones. Comparisons among practices in the lesbian and bisexual population are presented.Clinical Implications Providers should be aware that sexual orientations have their own specificities, including sexuality and practices, which should increase their knowledge and comfort in working with sexual minorities.Strengths and Limitations The novel topic of the study addresses the gap in sexuality research among WSW. Strengths include the sex-positive approach, the inclusion of an array of sexual practices, and the consideration of the specificities of the group. Limitations in the generalization of the results are the cross-sectional design and the explicit topic, which may have kept some persons from responding.Conclusion We propose the framing of sex as going beyond genital contact, and we invite clinicians and researchers who come into contact with WSW to be aware that sexual orientation

Sleep and rest-activity-rhythm (RAR) abnormalities are commonly reported in schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD) patients. However, an in-depth characterization of sleep/RAR alterations in SSD, including patients in different treatment settings, and the relationship between these alterations and SSD clinical features (e.g., negative symptoms) is lacking. SSD (N = 137 altogether, N = 79 residential and N = 58 outpatients) and healthy control (HC) subjects (N = 113) were recruited for the DiAPAson project. Participants wore an ActiGraph for seven consecutive days to monitor habitual sleep-RAR patterns. Sleep/rest duration, activity (i.e., M10, calculated on the 10 most active hours), rhythm fragmentation within days (i.e., intra-daily variability, IV; beta, steepness of rest-active changes), and rhythm regularity across days (i.e., inter-daily stability, IS) were computed in each study participant. Negative symptoms were assessed in SSD patients with the Brief Negative Symptom Scale (BNSS). Both SSD groups showed lower M10 and longer sleep/rest duration vs. HC, while only residential patients had more fragmented and irregular rhythms than HC. Compared to outpatients, residential patients had lower M10 and higher beta, IV and IS. Furthermore, residential patients had worse BNSS scores relative to outpatients, and higher IS contributed to between-group differences in BNSS score severity. Altogether, residentials and outpatients SSD had both shared and unique abnormalities in Sleep/RAR measures vs. HC and relative to one another, which also contributed to the patients' negative symptom severity. Future work will help establish whether improving some of these measures may ameliorate the quality of life and clinical symptoms of SSD patients.

Aims: The present investigation aimed at evaluating differences in psychiatric hospitalizations in Italy during and after the lockdown due to the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), compared to the same periods in 2018 and 2019. Methods: We obtained and analyzed anonymized data on psychiatric admissions (n = 4550) from 12 general hospital psychiatric wards (GHPWs) in different Italian regions (catchment area = 3.71 millions of inhabitants). Using a mixed-effects Poisson regression model, we compared admission characteristics across three periods: (a) March 1–June 30, 2018 and 2019; (b) March 1–April 30, 2020 (i.e., lockdown); and (c) May 1–June 30, 2020 (i.e., post-lockdown). Results: During the COVID-19 lockdown, there was a 41% reduction (IRR = 0.59; p < 0.001, CI: 0.45–0.79) in psychiatric admissions in the enrolled GHPWs with respect to the 2018 and 2019 control period. Conversely, admission rates in the post-lockdown period were similar to those observed in the control period. Notably, a consistent and significant reduction in psychiatric hospitalizations of older patients (aged >65 years) was observed in the lockdown (40%; IRR = 0.60; 95% CI: 0.44–0.82) and post-lockdown (28%; IRR = 0.72; 95% CI: 0.54–0.96) periods. Long-stay admissions (>14 days) increased (63%; IRR = 1.63; 95% CI: 1.32–2.02) during the lockdown and decreased by 39% thereafter (IRR = 0.61; 95% CI: 0.49–0.75). A significant 35% increase in patients reporting suicidal ideation was observed in the post-lockdown period, compared to the rate observed in the 2018 and 2019 control period (IRR = 1.35; 95% CI: 1.01–1.79). Conclusion: The COVID-19 lockdown was associated with changes in the number of psychiatric admissions, particularly for older patients and long-stay hospitalizations. Increased admission of patients reporting suicidal ideation in the post-lockdown period merits special attention. Further studies are required to gain insight into the observed phenomena.

Delirium is a phenomenon classified within neuro-cognitive disorders in the DSM-5. It has several etiologies and it is often lethal. This contribute aims at analyzing clinical characteristics and diagnostic possibilities of delirium in patients affected by covid-19. Furthermore, some preliminary recommendations on the use of psychopharmacological treatment of delirium and their interactions with main drugs used to treat covid-19 are given, with a special attention to comorbidities like in immunocompromised patients, in those affected by diabetes and cancer, in pregnant women or in addicted clients.

Child abuse is an important source of mental and physical adverse consequences for victims, their family, and their community. The impact of violence during childhood on the development of the victim is a very sensitive theme. Other than internalizing symptoms, it is interesting to analyze the possibility that a victim may assume the role of persecutor. With this aim, we evaluate Literature and examine the interplay among different types of child abuse (emotional neglect, emotional abuse, physical neglect, physical abuse and sexual abuse) and the development of psychopathy. We consider the role of post-traumatic stress disorder and that of personal environment as potential mediators between abuse and psychopathy. Furthermore, an in-depth analysis on possible differences due to the victim's gender is performed. Finally, analysis focused on genetic variants, such as the polymorphism of 5HTT and MAO-A, or a biological alteration, like the difference in daily cortisol levels that could be related to the development of psychopathy after a trauma.

The therapeutic termination of pregnancy (TToP) is an induced abortion following a diagnosis of medical necessity. TToP is applied to avoid the risk of substantial harm to the mother or in cases of fetal unviability. This type of induced abortion is provided after the second semester of gestation if fetal illness or the pregnancy cause physical danger or pathological mental distress to the mother. Socio-cultural and economic determinants could influence the desire for children and family planning in couples, as well as the use of effective contraception and the choice to perform an induced abortion. Also, pre-existing mental health problems could affect the decision between carrying on a problematic pregnancy or having TToP. Furthermore, the TToP is a reproductive event with an important traumatic burden, but also with an intrinsic therapeutic effect and it can produce different psychological and psychopathological effects on women and couples. The aim of this review is to evaluate what demographic, reproductive and psychopathological determinants are involved in the choice of undergoing a TToP in women. Also, we will examine both positive and negative consequences of this procedure on women's mental health, underlying which factors are related to a worse outcome in order to provide the best clinical support to vulnerable groups.

Background: Cannabis use during pregnancy may adversely affect the health of pregnant women and their fetus. Several recent surveys led in the US general population in the last decade showed an increase in cannabis use during pregnancy from 1.95 to 7%, with a 0.5% for medical-only purposes. Objectives: Our aim was to investigate if an increased incidence might be due to a greater public acceptability after introduction of cannabis medical use or due to psychiatric implications and unmet needs. Method: 500 pregnant women (302 psychiatric patients and 198 healthy controls) were tested with the Edimburgh Post-Natal Depression Scale, Beck Anxiety and Depression Inventory, and Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-IV Axis II while substance use disorder was documented with the fulfillment of the DSM-5 criteria. Results: Five percent of the whole sample had a documented addiction to cannabis during pregnancy (all among psychiatric patients and none in the general population). All psychiatric patients with cannabis use disorder were affected by borderline personality disorder, except for 1 patient with cannabis and cocaine use disorders who suffered from adjustment disorder with anxiety. Conclusions: Addiction to cannabis during pregnancy has an increased rate confirming surveys on the general US population but seem entirely linked to psychiatric issues, especially borderline personality disorder. Personality disorders may have been underestimated in surveys in the general population until now because these are usually not assessed.
