This manual acquaints readers with the general operations of the tree care industry. The manual covers subjects important to a tree worker and serves as a training aid for workers at the entry level as tree care professionals. Each chapter begins with a set of objectives and may include figures, tables, and photographs. Ten chapters are included: (1) the tree service industry; (2) clothing, equipment, and tools; (3) the tree workers; (4) basic tree anatomy; (5) pruning; (6) climbing and working in the tree; (7) aerial lifts; (8) tree identification; (9) identification and treatment of tree problems; and (10) other tree care operations. This material is designed to be taught to junior and senior high or vocational school students as a 1-year course. This training manual, the third volume in a four-volume series of curriculum guides for use in training Peace Corps agricultural development workers, deals with crops. The first chapter provides suggested guidelines for setting up and carrying out the crops component of the agricultural development worker training series. Included in the second chapter are lesson plans covering the following skill areas: the agricultural environment, crop production management principles, units of measure, soil management and fertilizer use, water management, insect control, disease and nematode control, weed control, vegetable production, and traditional field crops. The third chapter consists of a series of technical resources covering basic vegetable production practices from garden planning through harvest. Provided in the appendix are skill goals and objectives, a supply and equipment list, sample planting instructions, a sample field notebook page, and an exam. (MN)

This manual is intended for use by Peace Corps volunteers as a resource for gaining an understanding and knowledge of basic horticultural principles and practices of orchard management. Addressed in the individual units of instructional text are orchard soils; botany of horticultural plants; insect and disease control in orchards; pome, stone, citrus, vine, and tropical fruits; and nuts. This manual, prepared for use by Peace Corps volunteers, provides background information and practical knowledge about crop production. The manual is designed to convey insights into basic crop production, principles, and practices. Primary emphasis is given to providing explanations and illustrations of soil, plant, and water relationships as they affect crop production. The content is presented in as nontechnical language as possible. Each of the seven units of the text are complete, substantially self-contained, and provide information, tables, and illustrations. The units cover the following topics: soils, plants, entomology, cereal crops, pulse crops, sugar and fiber crops, and oil crops. A glossary of terms used in agronomy completes the manual. (KC)

This manual presents a simple, step-by-step description of irrigated rice production in Sierra Leone. It is geared specifically to the role and needs of Peace Corps volunteers who, since the mid-1970s, have worked as agricultural extension agents in the Sierra Leone Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The manual is designed to serve both as a training manual, complementing the curriculum taught during preservice training, and as a field guide that contains a ready source of technical information during the growing season. The 18 chapters in the manual cover the stages of rice plant growth, seed selection and preparation, land preparation, fertilizer, insect pest prevention, diseases of rice, weed control, harvesting, threshing, drying, and storage. This manual, prepared for use by Peace Corps volunteers in developing countries, has been designed as an on-the-job reference for soil management and fertilizer use at the small farmer level. It provides information on yield-boosting techniques, especially in the areas of soil conservation, organic and chemical fertilizer use, and the safe and appropriate use of agricultural chemicals. The text is written in a "how to" format, in as nontechnical language as possible, and takes a problem-solving approach to soil management and fertilizer use. Organized into nine sections, the text covers the following topics: soil basics, spotting and fixing soil physical problems, seedbed preparation, soil fertility basics, determining fertilizer needs, how to use organic fertilizers and soil conditioners, chemical fertilizers, liming soils, and salinity and alkalinity problems. An appendix to the manual provides conversion tables, composition of common fertilizers, information on soil moisture content, erosion control approaches, and hunger signs in common crops. (KC)

This curriculum guide provides the plant science components of the vocational agriculture curriculum for Regional Vocational Agriculture Centers. The curriculum is divided into exploratory units for students in the 9th and 10th grades and specialized units for students in grades 11 and 12. The five exploratory units are: agricultural pest control; care and management of a vegetable garden; greenhouse business management; soils and fertilizer; and plant anatomy, physiology, and classification. production and marketing; floral design; fruit production; greenhouse crop production and marketing; greenhouse structures; interior landscaping; landscape construction; landscape design; landscape maintenance; nursery management; operation and care of horticultural equipment; perennial plant identification, production, and marketing; plant nutrition; plant propagation; retail flower shop management; turf management; vegetable producing and marketing; beekeeping; plant tissue culture; and hydroponic culture. Each unit contains these components: length (time); objectives; related job titles and relevant competencies; content outline; teacher and student activities; evaluation suggestions; bibliography; and individual teacher unit review. This eight-volume student text is designed for use by Air Force personnel enrolled in a self-study extension course for pest management specialists. Covered in the individual volumes are civil engineering; pest management (entomology, pest management planning and coordination, and safety and protective equipment); pest management chemicals and equipment (pesticides in the environment, pesticide characteristics and classification, and pesticide dispersal equipment); disease vectors (mosquitoes, flies, fleas, lice, ticks, and mites); vertebrate pests (rodents, birds, and others); economic pests (pests of stored products, structural pests, and ornamental and turf pests); household, venomous, and vegetative pests; and general contingency responsibilities (first aid techniques, field hygiene and sanitation, work party security, convoy techniques, expedient field water treatment, and vehicle operation). Each volume in the set contains a series of lessons, exercises at the end of each lesson, a bibliography, and answers to the exercises. This slide script, part of a series of slide scripts designed for use in vocational agriculture classes, deals with recognizing and controlling diseases found on ornamental landscape plants. Included in the script are narrations for use with a total of 80 slides illustrating various foliar diseases (anthracnose, black spot, hawthorn leaf blight, powdery mildew, cedar-apple rust, cedar-quince rust, apple scab, pyracanthra scab, and other leaf spots); blights (pine tip and juniper tip blights); trunk and stem disorders (fireblight, pachysandra stem blight, cankers, slime flux, black knot, crown gall, and cytospora canker); and vascular wilts (Dutch elm disease, oak wilt, verticillium wilt, and pine wilt nematode). This brochure describes the philosophy and scope of a secondary-level course in floriculture and horticulture. Addressed in the individual units of the course are the following topics: the Future Farmers of America, floriculture, merchandising and selling, retail flower shop management, advertising, inventory, indentification of common floral design foliage and flowers, greenhouse management, plant propagation, pest management, general horticultural techniques, in-school projects, vegetable production, techniques for pruning, the principles of judging flowers and plants, and tool and equipment safety. The brochure contains various materials for use in implementing the course, including a list of subtopics in each topic area, a detailed outline of the objectives and goals to be addressed in the presentation of each subtopic, statements of the philosophy of the course and of the school at which the course was developed, lists of school and course objectives, a discussion of worker characteristics and job environmental factors, a course description, lists of entry-level jobs and possible occupations that can be entered with additional training, job descriptions appearing in the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT), and a task identification chart that correlates course tasks with those listed in the DOT. Designed for students enrolled in the Vocational Agricultural Cooperative Part-Time Training Program, this course of study contains 13 units for crop farm employees. Contained in this manual are descriptions of the reaction of ornamental plants to diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, and viruses and mycoplasmas. Also described are insects which are associated with ornamentals. Examples of weeds found in ornamental or turf areas, such as crabgrass and chickweed, are described as well. This guide contains pest control information for commercial vegetable production. It was prepared for agricultural supply dealers, extension agents, fieldmen, and growers. It gives general precautions, information on seed treatment, growing disease-free seedlings and transplants, general soil insect control, general weed control, and spraying equipment. The guide also gives individual pest control suggestions for twenty-four crops. Finally, it contains application and formulation information for many herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides. (BB)

This manual describes the major forest types, the major species, seed orchards, and tree nurseries. Methods of identifying forest insect pests and diseases are given. The most common types of insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides are described. Both sprayer and granular applicator methods are discussed. Environmental considerations are presented. (BB)

This manual gives descriptions of and methods for control of diseases and insect pests of ornamental plants, weeds, and diseases and insect pests of turf plants. Included are diseases caused by fungi such as cankers, leaf galls, and rust; diseases caused by bacteria such as bacterial blight and crown gall; and diseases caused by nematodes and viruses. Also included are insects with sucking mouthparts such as aphids, lacebugs, and mealybugs; and insects with chewing mouthparts such as beetles and caterpillars. Ornamental and turf weeds are covered including both annuals and perennials. Eight kinds of turf diseases and nine kinds of turf insects are included.
