The prior studies form a solid foundation for the emerging research on military entrepreneurship in China. This chapter is dedicated to providing a detailed review on the evolution of Chinese disarmament, with a focus on military-civilian transfer and settlement of demobilized military staffs. Such a review comprehensively lays backgrounds for Chinese military entrepreneurship and thus is expected to serve as a prelude to the emerging research in this area.

To have a thorough understanding of the current state of veteran entrepreneurship in China, a literature mapping was made on the basis of 235 related articles and research literature published in the past decade (from 2010 to 2019), which are open to the public and available on the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). Via combing through the above findings, the authors tried to unlock a phase with prominent rise of corresponding research papers and its possible reason, reveal the leading research power and their correlation, and also explore a potential research trend in the future. On the basis of the overall context and generalization of the status quo and limitations of this field during the past 10 years, reference and guidance can be provided for future study and policy making.

This chapter sums up the main conclusive points that can be drawn so far from the previous chapters. In the main, it summarises the way in which the West’s contradictory economic and political developments since the 1970s have undermined its own primacy in global political economy, clearly conceding ground to Asian economies in the 1990s. Thus, the triumphalism of the collapse of Communism in the 1990s did not last long.

This chapter focuses on China’s pro-Keynesian turn after the global financial crisis, at a moment when western polities were opting to a deepening of their neo-ordo-liberal agendas. It provides evidence of rises in wages and welfare provision and compares and contrasts this with developments in the western core states. The success of the Chinese model on a global stage, prompted the USA and her allies to impose a number of restrictions and sanctions on China and Chinese companies, leading many analysts to argue—falsely in our view—that there is a new Cold War in the making.

This chapter makes a statement based on previous research by the authors, namely that the EU project is based on Germany’s ordoliberal canon. EU’s ordoliberal Treaties are inspired by Germany’s model of capitalism and institutions, which themselves had to be reformed injecting even more austerity and discipline in the co-federated members-states in order to deal with the crisis and keep the EU as a whole being competitive on a global scale. Thus, the chapter shows that it is also the external combined competitive constraint articulated between the EU, China, Japan and the USA that necessitated the introduction of such unprecedented neo-colonial treaties as the Fiscal Compact and the European Semester programme on the part of the European Commission. In order to keep a competitive edge in the global division of labour, the central institutions of the EU have been forced to defend the primacy of Germany in the Eurozone.

This chapter outlines the main institutional features of the Chinese political system and the state and explains its resilience and independence vis-a-vis external imperial influences. Further, it lays out the main economic policy principles that guide Chinese economic policy and discusses the ways in which China’s ruling class connect its principles of economic development with geo-economic and geopolitical expansion in Asia and beyond. In this context, the chapter sheds light, among others, on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and explains how China’s mode of economic development and expansion differs from that of the West.

This chapter tests our findings about the strength of China’s socio-economic model by way of focusing on the global pandemic caused by Covid-19. We argue that China, along with other states that refused to follow the neo-liberal model of financialised capitalism, fared much better in containing the pandemic in their societies. Such examples include Vietnam, Cuba and China itself.

This chapter deals with the rise of financialised capitalism in the West and its crisis in a historical perspective. It counters arguments that downplay financialisation as a component of neo-liberal policy-making, assessing neo-liberal globalisation as a virtuous cycle of capitalist growth, centred around the robustness of US capitalism and the capacity of the American state to integrate under its aegis other socio-economic formations: in this view, the American state is “the author of neo-liberal globalisation”, integrating China in its very system, the making of global capitalism having the colours of the American empire-state. This chapter shows that this is not the case. Further, China’s integration into the structures of global political economy from the 1980s onwards brought more benefits to China than to transatlantic economies.

PurposeThe study of business ethics has seldom shed light on small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) despite their theoretical and practical significance. Drawing from strain perspective, the purpose of this paper is to address this insufficiency and investigate SME owners’ ethical attitudes toward money-related deviances.Design/methodology/approachBased on a large sample of 741 Chinese SMEs, an OLS regression analysis was employed to test associated hypotheses. The robustness of results was additionally checked.FindingsThe results suggest that for stratification variables, education level is positively related to ethical attitudes, whereas household income level is surprisingly negatively associated with ethical attitudes; for materialism facets, success and happiness exert a negative impact on ethical attitudes as hypothesized, but centrality has no associated impact.Research limitations/implicationsThis study has examined both structural and motivational sources of personal strains on the ethical attitude of SME owners, while the characteristics of these strains could be explored in the future studies.Originality/valueThis study advances and complements the dominant behavior approach that emphasizes cognitive and other psychological processes in explaining individual ethical attitudes. It is also seemingly the first study to examine the influence of three materialism facets on entrepreneurial ethical attitudes.

Despite its prevalence in emerging economies, everyday-life business deviance (EBD) and its antecedents have received surprisingly little research attention. Drawing on strain theory and the business-ethics literature, we develop a socio-psychological explanation for this deviance. Our analysis of 741 owners of Chinese small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) suggests that materialism and trust in institutional justice affect EBD both directly and indirectly in a relationship mediated by the ethical standards of SME owners. These findings have important implications for researching deviant business behavior within SMEs.

This paper aims to explore the role and impact of entrepreneurs' social networks on the internationalization of "Born Global" firms, in particular, its de-internationalisation process. The research is based on a case study approach; it is guided by the social constructionist paradigm. It adopts a series of face to face and online interviews longitudinally; an inductive analysis approach was applied to develop the framework. This paper disclosed the impact of the entrepreneur’s social networks on a "Born Global" firm’s development. It gains useful insights in the relationships management of "Born Global" entrepreneurs and it unveils the negative impacts of social networks and the ‘de-internationalisation’ process. Finally, it reveals the importance of online social networks and high tech communication and management techniques for "Born Global" entrepreneurs. The most significant contribution of the study is to point out the importance of social networks in studying the internationalization of “Born Globals”, in particular, its de-internationalisation process.

This study investigates one type of primarily unexplored business deviances, which is characterized as magnitude triviality but wide pervasion in daily business transactions, namely everyday-life business delinquencies (EBDs) of small and medium sized enterprise (SME) owners. Drawing from the recent advancement of strain theory and ethical decision-making literature, this study is seemingly the first to incorporate the socio-psychological perspective initiated by Durkheim and Merton into examining the delinquencies in SMEs. An analysis of 741 Chinese SME owners suggests that materialism and trust in institutional justice have a direct effect on EBDs, which is mediated by ethical standards of SME owners; and also, trust in institutional justice interacting with ethical standards affects EBDs.

We use the psycholinguistic content analysis methods to investigate how new CEOs' psychological factors influence the post succession strategic changes (PSSC) of firms in the FTSE all share index. Taking the trilogy of mind perspective, on top of cognition, we advocate that new CEOs' emotion and conation serve as the impetus for the PSSC. By tracing the identical new CEOs over years after their succession in a non-experimental field study, empirical results of this longitudinal study demonstrate that those intra-individual psychological (time-varying) factors of new CEOs are important for the PSSC. New CEOs' future focus attention (FFA), commitment to change (C2C) will significantly increase the PSSC and new CEOs' negative emotion (NE) will significantly reduce the PSSC. The paper claims that incorporating more comprehensive factors in new CEOs' trilogy of mind can help us get a better picture for the mechanism behind PSSC.

In this article, the roughness mechanism of silicon after etching in aqueous potassium hydroxide solutions is proposed. There should exist difference between roughness mechanism and anisotropic mechanism. A parameter just being analog to the surface activation energy is proposed for etching solution. Combining this parameter and the three main crystal planes activation energy, the roughness can be estimated. So, authors believe that it is the surface activation energy that accounts for the surface roughness.

A novel method for the preparation of bonded and etch‐back silicon‐on‐insulator is presented and demonstrated in which the surface of the to be thinned silicon wafer near the oxide is biased to inversion, so the bulk of this silicon wafer can be removed by anodic etching using the depletion layer as an etch stop. The high etching selectivity between the bulk silicon wafer and the depletion layer makes it possible to produce a micron/submicron‐thick active silicon layer with good thickness uniformity across a 3 in. silicon‐on‐insulator wafer.

Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) was fabricated by wafer bonding using thermal SiO2 and trichloroethylene (TCE)-grown SiO2 as the buried oxides. Both the fixed charge density and the interface trap density at the back of silicon films on oxides were found to be appreciably lower for TCE-grown SiO2 than for dry-grown SiO2. The addition of TCE resulted also in significant increases of carrier lifetimes. The bonded SOI strength using TCE-grown SiO2 is comparable to that using dry-grown SiO2.
