This study investigated rumen degradation kinetics of dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) in compound feed with different tannin extract inclusions and Acacia mearnsi forage (AMF) relative to dairy feeds (perennial ryegrass+white clover mixture pasture, maize silage, lucerne hay and Themeda triandra hay). The compound feed had 0.75%, 1.5% and 3% tannins extract inclusions while the control was a commercial compound feed. Triplicates of each feed per incubation period were incubated in two fistulated Jersey cows for 0, 6, 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 h, resulting in six replicates per feed. Tannin extract inclusions in compound feed only affected (p < 0.05) the (a) fraction, degradation rate and potential degradability (PD) for DM degradation, and affected (p < 0.05) the (a) and (b) fractions, as well as PD for CP degradation. The (a) fraction and degradation rate for DM degradation changed linearly (p < 0.05). The (a) fraction, PD and effective degradability (ED) of DM degradation changed quadratically (p < 0.05). Except for the degradation rate, the feed type affected (p < 0.05) the degradation parameters in both DM and CP degradations. For DM and CP degradations, (a) fraction was similarly the least in Themeda triandra hay and AMF but similarly the highest in maize silage, perennial ryegrass+white clover mixture pasture and lucerne hay. The (b) fraction was the least in AMF for both DM and CP degradations but the highest for pasture's DM degradation and similarly the highest in maize silage, lucerne hay and T. triandra hay for CP degradation. The PD was the least in AMF for both DM and CP degradations and similarly the highest in pasture DM but similarly the highest in perennial ryegrass+white clover mixture pasture, maize silage and lucerne hay for CP degradation. Furthermore, the ED was the lowest in AMF and the highest for perrenial ryegrass + white clover mixture pasture for DM degradation and same trend was observed for CP degradation whereby perrenial ryegrass + white clover mixture pasture, maize silage and lucerne had the highest ED. Digestible undegraded protein was the highest in AMF and similarly the least in dairy feeds. Breeding ryegrass for reduced inorganic phosphorus (Pi) concentrations in leaf vacuoles could lower pasture P fertiliser requirements with economic and environmental benefits. We investigated foliar Pi% accumulation characteristics of a range of ryegrass cultivars and ecotypes in glasshouse experiments, and ryegrass cultivars from two field trials. Pi in ryegrass was also compared with Pi in cocksfoot, tall fescue, prairie grass and Phalaris in a glasshouse experiment. Pi expressed as a percentage of leaf total phosphorus was higher (average 82.5%) in the older ryegrass cultivars – Ruanui, and Nui and the New Zealand hill country ecotypes (85%) than in more recently bred cultivars like Aberdart and One50 (74.7%). In the other grass species, foliar Pi% was lowest in prairie grass, intermediate in tall fescue with the highest values in cocksfoot, Phalaris and ryegrass. The results suggest that including a lower Pi concentration in future ryegrass breeding programmes might improve ryegrass P use efficiency without compromising growth rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Failure of perennial ryegrass‐based pastures to persist beyond 3 years post‐sowing is an increasing threat to the sustainability of livestock industries in the north of New Zealand. Little is known of the long‐term responses of plants and populations to the environmental stresses responsible for persistence failure, or the effects of ryegrass genetics on those responses. Plants were collected from 10‐year‐old pastures sown in two environments (Waikato, North Island: warm‐temperate, summer/autumn dry; Canterbury, South Island: cool temperate, irrigated) to four ryegrass functional types and grazed by dairy cattle. Surviving plants in Canterbury pastures were almost all true‐to‐type for the original genotype, whereas there was substantial ingress of volunteer plants in the diploid cultivars in Waikato. Plants confirmed as true‐to‐type were compared to reference plants grown from the original seed lines. Leaf mass was lower in survivor plants than in reference plants for all functional types. This effect was reversed by recruitment of new plants from seed in a grazing deferment treatment applied at the Waikato site 18 months before plant collection, in a manner consistent with epigenetic control. Reproductive development was delayed by 4–6 days in survivors of mid‐ and late flowering diploid cultivars: this effect appeared to be the result of true genetic differentiation. There was less aftermath heading in the Canterbury survivors, but not Waikato survivors, compared with the reference plants. Pastoral agriculture underpins the New Zealand economy. Its success in generating export income is due to a mild and moist temperate climate, productive soils, innovative farmers supported by an effective research and development system, and an energy efficient production system based on year-round grazing. However, pastoral agriculture is entirely reliant on introduced pasture and forage species and their ability to withstand both endemic and introduced pasture pests. Critical to this is the mutualistic relationship between ryegrass and Epichloë fungal endophytes which provide a range of secondary metabolites that deter herbivory by both ruminants and insect pests. The challenge has been to identify and commercialise Epichloë strains which while providing protection against insect pests, ensuring ryegrass persistence, do not cause animal health and welfare issues. The critical role that Epichloë fungal endophytes play in maintaining pasture persistence and as a result the pastoral economy of New Zealand will be reviewed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A trade‐off between growth and defence against biotic stresses is common in plants. Fungal endophytes of the genus Epichloë may relieve this trade‐off in their host grasses since they can simultaneously induce plant growth and produce antiherbivore alkaloids that circumvent the need for host defence. The Epichloë ability to decouple the growth‐defence trade‐off was evaluated by subjecting ryegrass with and without Epichloë endophytes to an exogenous treatment with gibberellin (GA) followed by a challenge with Rhopalosiphum padi aphids. In agreement with the endophyte‐mediated trade‐off decoupling hypothesis, the GA‐derived promotion of plant growth increased the susceptibility to aphids in endophyte‐free plants but did not affect the insect resistance in endophyte‐symbiotic plants. In line with the unaltered insect resistance, the GA treatment did not reduce the concentration of Epichloë‐derived alkaloids. The Epichloë mycelial biomass was transiently increased by the GA treatment but at the expense of hyphal integrity. The response of the phyllosphere bacterial microbiota to both GA treatment and Epichloë was also evaluated. Only Epichloë, and not the GA treatment, altered the composition of the phyllosphere microbiota and the abundance of certain bacterial taxa. Our findings clearly demonstrate that Epichloë does indeed relieve the plant growth‐defence trade‐off. Summary statement: A debate has been raised if fungal endophytes can relieve the plant growth‐defence trade‐off. Epichloë endophytes decoupled the trade‐off: the growth‐mediated penalisation of plant defences was observed in E− but not in E+ plants. AbstractDue to the escalating demand for conventional potassium sources, and their unavailability in many African countries, there is a growing interest in hydrothermally treated igneous rocks as viable alternatives. These materials exhibit promising potential in enhancing potassium release, comparable to traditional sources like muriate of potash (M.O.P.). However, it remains uncertain whether they can adequately fulfill the nutrient requirements of plants. In this study, we evaluated nutrient balance in ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) using raw and hydrothermally treated K-bearing silicate rocks as fertilizers. The Compositional Nutrient Diagnostic (CND) approach was used to assess the plants’ nutrient status, involving identification of high-yield subpopulations, and setting a yield cutoff. We derived a theoretical threshold for nutrient imbalance (CNDr2) using statistical methods like the chi-square distribution function and low-yield subpopulation proportion. CNDr2 was validated via Cate–Nelson partition and sum of squared individual nutrient indexes. Results showed a yield cutoff of 37.759 kg ha−1, distinguishing low-yield and high-yield subpopulations based on cumulative variance ratio functions from survey data. The theoretical threshold derived using the chi-square function was 10.1, subsequently validated by the Cate–Nelson method. Critical CND nutrient indices were symmetrical around zero, but their sum indicated foliar nutrient imbalance, notably zinc, potassium, and copper excess, attributed to 20 interactions identified (4 synergetic and 16 antagonistic). This study underscores hydrothermal treatment’s efficacy in improving nutrient availability and achieving a balanced nutrient profile compared to raw materials. Background: The potential of phytoremediation using garlic monoculture (MC) and intercropping (IC) system with perennial ryegrass to enhance the uptake of cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) were investigated. Results: Positive correlations were found between MC and IC systems, with varying biomass. Production of perennial ryegrass was affected differently depending on the type of toxic metal present in the soil. Root growth inhibition was more affected than shoot growth inhibition. The total biomass of shoot and root in IC was higher than MC, increasing approximately 3.7 and 2.9 fold compared to MC, attributed to advantages in root IC crop systems. Photosystem II efficiency showed less sensitivity to metal toxicity compared to the control, with a decrease between 10.07–12.03%. Among gas exchange parameters, only Cr significantly affected physiological responses by reducing transpiration by 69.24%, likely due to leaf chlorosis and necrosis. Conclusion: This study exhibited the potential of garlic MC and IC with perennial ryegrass in phytoremediation. Context: Data are lacking on the effects of selected endophytes of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) on ryegrass persistence. Aim: We aimed to determine the impact of Epichloë endophyte on the persistence of mid- and late-heading perennial ryegrass cultivars. Method: Two mid-heading (Samson, Bronsyn) and two late-heading (One50, Rohan) cultivars, infected with selected endophytes (AR37, nea2/6) or with standard toxic endophyte, were established in a replicated plot study grazed by cattle in a subtropical environment of the upper North Island of New Zealand. Persistence characteristics were quantified at least five times per annum, over 4 years. Key results: Endophyte strain had an effect on persistence; infection with standard endophyte resulted in higher ryegrass ground cover percentage, ryegrass content in pasture dry matter and autumn yield than infection with nea2/6 on many occasions, and with AR37 on some occasions. There were negligible impacts on ryegrass tiller density or nutritive value. Trends were dominated by the main effect of endophyte; interactions with heading date were inconsistent. Conclusions: Cultivars were more persistent when infected with standard endophyte than with selected endophytes, although persistence declined over 4 years for all cultivars and irrespective of heading date. Implications: Reliance on selected endophyte is unlikely to prevent persistence decline of perennial ryegrass in a subtropical environment. Other strategies will be required to maintain the persistence of high-quality pastures based on perennial ryegrass. Herbicide promotes physiological and biochemical changes even in tolerant species. The objective of this study was to evaluate the interference of the herbicides clodinafop-propargyl and 2,4-D in the antioxidant system of wheat, and iodosulfuron-methyl in wheat and ryegrass. Two studies, divided into three experiments, were conducted in an entirely randomized design in a greenhouse and phytotron. The first study tested herbicides iodosulfuron-methyl, clodinafop-propargyl, 2,4-D, and a control without application in wheat. The second, divided into two experiments with wheat and ryegrass, tested iodosulfuron-methyl doses (0, 1.75, 3.5, and 7.0 g a.i. ha-1). The variables analyzed were the concentrations of chlorophylls a, b, carotenoids, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), lipid peroxidation (TBARS), electrolyte leakage, and antioxidant system activity. The herbicide treatments iodosulfuron-methyl, clodinafop-propargyl, and 2,4-D decreased the concentrations of chlorophylls and carotenoids in wheat plants. The herbicides promoted oxidative stress with increased H2O2 and TBARS concentrations. Increasing the dose of iodosulfuron-methyl provided a reduction in the activity of the enzymatic antioxidant system in wheat and ryegrass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In artificially controlled pot experiments, perennial ryegrass was mixed with other leguminous plants (white clover and alfalfa) and treated with lead, zinc and cadmium (337 mg·kg, 648 mg·kg, and 9 mg·kg, respectively) to simulate compound pollution conditions. The results showed that the concentrations of heavy metals, transport factors, and bioconcentration factors in mixed planting of ryegrass decreased compared with those in monoculture. Regardless of whether heavy metal pollution was introduced, mixed planting increased the aboveground and underground biomasses of ryegrass. The different mixed planting treatments had no significant impact on the chlorophyll concentration of ryegrass. The mowing time, mixed planting treatment, and heavy metal treatment had impacts on antioxidant and osmotic adjustment substances, and there were some interactions. The mixed planting treatment did not significantly affect glutathione concentration, cysteine concentration, or nonprotein thiol. Mixed planting generally increased the nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations of ryegrass while reducing the stoichiometric ratio of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. These results suggest that the mixed planting of ryegrass with legumes promotes the growth of ryegrass in the presence of high concentrations of heavy metal pollution. Plant roots significantly reduce soil detachment by overland flow. However, there have been few studies on how plant growth time and hydrodynamic characteristics affect the erosion‐reducing potential of plant roots. This study cultivated ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) as representative of plants possessing fibrous roots and taproots, respectively, in silty soil from the Loess Plateau, China. Root‐soil composites were collected monthly from March to September 2021 and subjected to flow scouring in a hydraulic flume at a 15° slope using five different flow discharges (0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2 and 0.3 L s−1). The results of the study indicated that root length density, root surface area density and root mass density exhibited a significant increase during the early growth phase, followed by a slight decrease. All parameters of fibrous roots revealed greater values than those of taproots, except for root mass density. The reduction in soil detachment under varying flow shear stresses showed a significant increase during the early phases of growth, followed by a gradual decline. Notably, fibrous roots demonstrated a greater impact on soil detachment than taproots, and this discrepancy fluctuated over time. Moreover, the contributions of fibrous and taproots to reducing soil detachment decreased from 55.81% to 39.66% and from 38.21% to 20.99% with increasing flow shear stress, respectively. It indicated that the erosion‐reducing potential of plant roots was greater when subjected to low‐flow shear stress compared to high‐flow shear stress. This study can provide a scientific basis for understanding the erosion‐reducing potential of plant roots at different growing stages and under varying hydrodynamic characteristics. BACKGROUND: The widespread use of chemical herbicides and the growing issue of weed resistance pose significant challenges in agriculture. To address these problems, there is a pressing need to develop biological herbicides based on bacterial metabolites. RESULTS: In this study, we investigated the impact of the cell‐free culture filtrate (CFCF) from the ZT isolate, a bacilliform bacterium obtained from diseased wheat seeds, on the germination and seedling growth of various plant species, including wild oat, ryegrass, redroot, wheat, and chickpea. The results revealed that CFCF had a detrimental effect on the fresh and dry weight of stems and roots in most of the studied plants, except chickpeas. The CFCF was further subjected to separation into aqueous and organic phases using chloroform, followed by the division of the aqueous phase into 13 fractions using an alumina column. Notably, both the aqueous phase (20%) and all 13 fractions (ranging from 50% to 83%) displayed the ability to reduce the root length of ryegrass, a monocotyledonous weed. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) analysis identified that fractions 3 and 7, which were effective against ryegrass but not redroot, contained Cry family proteins, including Cry10 Aa, Cry4 Ba, and Cry4 Aa. Additionally, 16s rRNA gene sequencing revealed that the ZT isolate is closely related (98.27%) to Bacillus wiedmannii. CONCLUSION: Conclusively, metabolites from the ZT bacterium hold promise for monocotyledonous weed‐targeted herbicides, providing a constructive strategy to confront agricultural issues tied to chemical herbicides and weed resistance. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. The understanding of rainfall-induced landslides on gentle, loose-fill slopes is limited in comparison to steep slopes. Hence, two physical model tests were conducted on silty sand slopes under continuous rainfall: one on a bare slope and the other on a slope planted with ryegrass. The slope angle of 25° is much lower than the internal friction angle of slope material (34.3°), which makes the model test fall well into the category of gentle slope. For the initially unsaturated bare slope, a rainfall event with return period of 18 years could trigger a rapid and retrogressive global sliding, which differs from previous findings that gentle slopes would only experience shallow failure. A sudden increase in pore-water pressure was simultaneously observed, which might be generated by the wetting-induced collapse of unsaturated loose soil. On the other hand, the stability of the slope with grass plantation was significantly enhanced, and it was able to withstand rainfall event more severe than those with a return period of 100 years, with only minimal deformation. The results suggest that the gain in shear strength due to ryegrass roots surpasses the additional sliding force caused by the increased water retention capability. Additionally, it is found that the abrupt change in pore pressure was no longer indicative of slope failure in the case of the grass-reinforced slope. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Seed retention is the basic prerequisite for seed harvest. However, only little breeding progress has been achieved for this trait in the major forage grasses. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of plant genetic resources of the important fodder grasses Festuca pratensis Huds. and Lolium perenne L. as source for seed retention in the breeding process. Furthermore, the morphology of the abscission zone, where shattering occurs, was studied on the cell tissue level in different developmental stages of contrasting accessions. Results: 150 and 286 accessions of Festuca pratensis and Lolium perenne were screened for seed retention, respectively. Contrasting accessions were selected to be tested in a second year. We found a great variation in seed retention in Festuca pratensis and Lolium perenne, ranging from 13 to 71% (average: 35%) and 12 to 94% (average: 49%), respectively, in the first year. Seed retention was generally lower in the second year. Cultivars were within the accessions with highest seed retention in Festuca pratensis, but had lower seed retention than ecotypes in Lolium perenne. Field-shattered seeds had a lower thousand grain weight than retained seeds. Cell layers of the abscission zone appeared already in early seed stages and were nested within each other in accessions with high seed retention, while there were two to three superimposed layers in accessions with low seed retention. Conclusions: Plant genetic resources of Lolium perenne might be a valuable source for breeding varieties with high seed retention. Cadmium (Cd) pollution has been rapidly increasing due to the global rise in industries. Cd not only harms the ecological environment but also endangers human health through the food chain and drinking water. Therefore, the remediation of Cd-polluted soil is an imminent issue. In this work, ryegrass and a strain of Cd-tolerant bacterium were used to investigate the impact of inoculated bacteria on the physiology and biochemistry of ryegrass and the Cd enrichment of ryegrass in soil contaminated with different concentrations of Cd (4 and 20 mg/kg). The results showed that chlorophyll content increased by 24.7% and 41.0%, while peroxidase activity decreased by 56.7% and 3.9%. In addition, ascorbic acid content increased by 16.7% and 6.3%, whereas glutathione content decreased by 54.2% and 6.9%. The total Cd concentration in ryegrass increased by 21.5% and 10.3%, and the soil's residual Cd decreased by 86.0% and 44.1%. Thus, the inoculation of Cd-tolerant bacteria can improve the antioxidant stress ability of ryegrass in Cd-contaminated soil and change the soil's Cd form. As a result, the Cd enrichment in under-ground and above-ground parts of ryegrass, as well as the biomass of ryegrass, is increased, and the ability of ryegrass to remediate Cd-contaminated soil is significantly improved. One of the largest isotopic datasets of the ancient Eastern Mediterranean region is evaluated, based on plants (n = 410), animals (n = 210) and humans (n = 16) from Tell Tweini (Syria). Diachronic analysis of plant and faunal specimens from four main periods of occupation: Early Bronze Age (2600–2000 BC), Middle Bronze Age (2000–1600 BC), Late Bronze Age (1600–1200 BC) and Iron Age (1200–333 BC) were investigated. Mean Δ13C results from seven plant species reveal emmer and free threshing wheat, olives, bitter vetch, rye grass and barley were adequately or well-watered during all periods of occupation. The grape Δ13C results suggest excellent growing conditions and particular care for its cultivation. The δ15N results indicate that especially the emmer and free threshing wheats received some manure inputs throughout the occupation sequence, while these were likely further increased during the Iron Age, encompassing also the olive groves and grape vineyards. Generally, domestic animals (cattle, sheep, goats) had C3 terrestrial diets and were kept together in similar environments. However, some animals consumed significant amounts of marine or C4 plants, possibly from disturbed habitats due to land use pressure or salt tolerant grasses and shrubs from wetland environments, which were recorded in the direct vicinity of the site. Middle Bronze Age humans consumed a C3 terrestrial diet with no measurable input from C4, freshwater or marine protein sources. Interestingly, the human diet was relatively low in animal protein and appears comparable to what is considered today a typical Mediterranean diet consisting of bread (wheat/barley), olives, grapes, pulses, dairy products and small amounts of meat. The combined isotopic analysis of plants, animals and humans from Tell Tweini represents unbroken links in the food chain which create unparalleled opportunities to enhance our current understanding of environmental conditions, climate change and lifeways in past populations from the Eastern Mediterranean. This research investigated the effect of various mixtures of maize silage and ryegrass fodder on nutrient digestibility, production performance, and methane (CH4) emission of fattening calves. Twenty-four fattening calves ((228±10) kg body weight (BW), (280±5) d of age) were allocated to 8 diets for 84 d, according to a randomized complete block design, and the blocks were balanced for BW, age, and sex. The diets consisted of 4 levels of maize silages, i.e., 40% (MS40), 50% (MS50), 60% (MS60), and 70% (MS70) in the maize silage and ryegrass fodder mixture on a dry matter (DM) basis, and each of the mixture was supplemented with either low (LC, 1.0% BW) or high (HC, 1.5% BW) levels of fattening concentrate. The results revealed greater (p<0.05) intakes of DM (8.35 kg/d), organic matter (OM, 7.85 kg/d), and metabolizable energy (ME, 12.00 Mcal/d) in calves fed with MS70-LC diet. The highest (p<0.05) digestibility (g/100 g) of DM (65.2), OM (67.3), crude protein (69.1), and neutral detergent fibre (56.3) was recorded for MS40-HC diet. The maximum (p<0.05) average daily gain (ADG, 571 g/d) was recorded for diet MS70-LC. The lowest value (p<0.05) of CH4 emission was recorded in MS70-LC, MS70-HC, and MS60-HC as compared to other diets. Background: Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) in New Zealand pastures is typically infected with the mutualist Epichloë fungal endophyte. This endophyte assists the plant in resisting biotic and abiotic stresses, but the standard strain of endophyte is toxic to livestock. Elite ryegrasses with selected endophytes have been developed to provide protective properties to the grass plant and lessen or eliminate the negative impacts on livestock. Methods: Using immunology and molecular techniques, the presence of endophyte infection and endophyte strain in ryegrass tillers was determined for 24 dairy pastures sampled for up to 7 years in regions of the North and South Islands. Results: In general, infection levels were high and showed small increases over time. Some pastures failed to reach 70% infection. The sown, selected endophytes were the dominant endophyte strains present and these were stable over time. Standard endophyte was the primary nonsown endophyte, and while generally low and so of little importance, it increased over time and for some pastures, this would have been detrimental to livestock. Pasture establishment technique influenced the level of contamination. Conclusions: Results reinforce the importance of following best practice procedures in the seed industry and on‐farm. Simple Summary: This study investigates the impact of endophyte-infected ryegrass and the alkaloids (such as peramine) which it produces, on the Argentine stem weevil (Listronotus bonariensis), a pest affecting pastures crucial for extensive agriculture. Seven unnamed lines (LE161-LE167), and two Lolium perenne cultivars, Jumbo and Alto AR1, were evaluated. Leaves from LE164, LE166, and ALTO AR1 led to significant weight reduction in L. bonariensis (−13.3%, −17.1%, and −18.2%, respectively). The corresponding alkaloidal extracts from these lines, grown in greenhouse trials, exhibited an antifeedant effect in laboratory assays, resulting in reduced weevil weight (−12.5%, 8.8%, and 4.9%, respectively). When incorporated into an artificial diet, peramine induced an antifeedant effect. Liquid chromatography analysis revealed the presence of peramine in LE164, LE166, and ALTO AR1 (ranging from 46.5 to 184.2 ng g−1), while it was absent in Jumbo and other lines. These findings suggest that endophyte-induced peramine production in specific ryegrass lines negatively impacts the feeding performance of L. bonariensis, presenting a potential ecological approach for pest control in pastures crucial for extensive agriculture. One of the primary supports for extensive agriculture is pasture, which can suffer severe damage from insects including the Argentine stem weevil, Listronotus bonariensis. The main control method has been the infection of ryegrass with an endophyte fungus, forming a symbiotic association that produces alkaloids. In this study, we evaluated the impact of endophyte and peramine production on the weight of L. bonariensis across seven unnamed lines (LE161-LE167), and two Lolium perenne cultivars: Jumbo and Alto AR1. L. bonariensis adults fed on leaves from LE164, LE166, and ALTO AR1 showed weight losses of 13.3%, 17.1% and 18.2%, respectively. Similarly, the corresponding alkaloidal extract from LE164, LE166, and ALTO AR1 exhibited an antifeedant effect on L. bonariensis adults in laboratory assays, as observed through weight loss or low weight gain (−12.5%, 8.8% and 4.9%, respectively). Plants especially need to adapt to all different light environments (shade, high light, etc.) due to the essential role of light in plant life. Either shade or high-light microenvironmental conditions are common for cool-season turfgrasses, such as perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). In order to study how a plant highly conserves microRNA, miR164-affected perennial ryegrass were studied under different light intensities. OsmiR164a-overexpression (OE164), target mimicry OsmiR164a (MIM164), and CRES-T (chimeric repressor gene-silencing technology) OsNAC60 (NAC60) transgenic plants and wild-type (WT) plants were evaluated in both field (shade and full sun) and growth chamber conditions (low, medium, and high PAR at 100, 400, and 1200 µmol s−1 m−2). Morphological and physiological analysis showed miR164 could fine-tune perennial ryegrass adaptation to changing light intensity, possibly via the regulation of target genes, such as NAC60. Overall, OE164 and NAC60 plants were similar to each other and more sensitive to high light, particularly under the field condition, demonstrated by smaller size and much poorer grass quality; MIM164 performed more like WT plants than either the OE164 or NAC60 plants. Food allergies mediated by specific IgE (sIgE) have a significant socioeconomic impact on society. Evaluating the IgE cross-reactivity between allergens from different allergen sources can enable the better management of these potentially life-threatening adverse reactions to food proteins and enhance food safety. A novel banana fruit allergen, S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine hydrolase (SAHH), has been recently identified and its recombinant homolog was heterologously overproduced in E. coli. In this study, we performed a search in the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) for SAHH homologs in ryegrass, latex, and kiwifruit, all of which are commonly associated with pollen-latex-fruit syndrome. In addition, Western immunoblot analysis was utilized to identify the cross-reactive IgE to banana SAHH in the sera of patients with a latex allergy, kiwifruit allergy, and ryegrass allergy. ClustalOmega analysis showed more than 92% amino acid sequence identity among the banana SAHH homologs in ryegrass, latex, and kiwifruit. In addition to five B-cell epitopes, in silico analysis predicted eleven T-cell epitopes in banana SAHH, seventeen in kiwifruit SAHH, twelve in ryegrass SAHH, and eight in latex SAHH, which were related to the seven-allele HLA reference set (HLA-DRB1*03:01, HLA-DRB1*07:01, HLA-DRB1*15:01, HLA-DRB3*01:01, HLA-DRB3*02:02, HLA-DRB4*01:01, HLA-DRB5*01:01). Four T-cell epitopes were identical in banana and kiwifruit SAHH (positions 328, 278, 142, 341), as well as banana and ryegrass SAHH (positions 278, 142, 96, and 341). All four SAHHs shared two T-cell epitopes (positions 278 and 341). In line with the high amino acid sequence identity and B-cell epitope homology among the analyzed proteins, the cross-reactive IgE to banana SAHH was detected in three of three latex-allergic patients, five of six ryegrass-allergic patients, and two of three kiwifruit-allergic patients. Although banana SAHH has only been studied in a small group of allergic individuals, it is a novel cross-reactive food allergen that should be considered when testing for pollen-latex-fruit syndrome. Measuring the methane to carbon dioxide ratio (CH4/CO2) from animals could be useful to predict CH4 yield when dry matter intake (DMI) cannot be measured. The objectives were to (1) evaluate the relationship of CH4/CO2 with CH4 yield; (2) compare the CH4/CO2 of 10–60 simulated spot-samples with the CH4/CO2 calculated with data from 48-h of respiration chamber measurements. The DMI and CH4 and CO2 emissions measured every 5–6 min in respiration chambers from a previous experiment with 70 lambs fed ryegrass substituted with 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of forage rape were retrieved. Emission data were used to perform simulations of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 randomly selected spot-samples per lamb. The CH4/CO2 of 20 or more spot-samples was useful to predict CH4 yield and detect differences between dietary treatments, while the precision of the prediction increased when increasing the number of spot-samples up to 50 samples per lamb. Twenty spot-samples were sufficient to obtain accurate CH4/CO2 estimates; however, variance decreased (precision improved) with an increasing number of spot-samples per lamb up to 50 spot-samples. SUMMARY: Bacterial wilt, caused by Xanthomonas translucens pv. graminis (Xtg), is a serious disease of economically important forage grasses, including Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.). A major QTL for resistance to Xtg was previously identified, but the precise location as well as the genetic factors underlying the resistance are yet to be determined. To this end, we applied a bulked segregant analysis (BSA) approach, using whole‐genome deep sequencing of pools of the most resistant and most susceptible individuals of a large (n = 7484) biparental F2 population segregating for resistance to Xtg. Using chromosome‐level genome assemblies as references, we were able to define a ~300 kb region highly associated with resistance on pseudo‐chromosome 4. Further investigation of this region revealed multiple genes with a known role in disease resistance, including genes encoding for Pik2‐like disease resistance proteins, cysteine‐rich kinases, and RGA4‐ and RGA5‐like disease resistance proteins. Investigation of allele frequencies in the pools and comparative genome analysis in the grandparents of the F2 population revealed that some of these genes contain variants with allele frequencies that correspond to the expected heterozygosity in the resistant grandparent. This study emphasizes the efficacy of combining BSA studies in very large populations with whole genome deep sequencing and high‐quality genome assemblies to pinpoint regions associated with a binary trait of interest and accurately define a small set of candidate genes. Furthermore, markers identified in this region hold significant potential for marker‐assisted breeding strategies to breed resistance to Xtg in Italian ryegrass cultivars more efficiently. The China Loess Plateau is subjected to severe soil erosion triggered by intense rainfall, resulting in significant harm and losses to both human society and the natural surroundings. In this study, a novel technique for managing loess erosion is introduced, which involves the utilization of a combined polymer SH and ryegrass. A comprehensive series of tests were undertaken, including rainfall erosion tests, disintegration experiments, and scanning electron microscopy examinations, to assess the accumulative sediment yield (ASY), disintegration ratio, and microstructural features of both untreated and treated loess samples. The results showed a significant reduction in ASY with increased dry density of untreated loess. Furthermore, the combined technique effectively controlled erosion, limiting ASY to 266.2 g/cm2 in 60 minutes. This was approximately one-sixth, one-ninth, and one-fifteenth of the ASY in SH-treated loess (L-SH), ryegrass-treated loess (L-R), and untreated loess, respectively. It resisted disintegration better than ryegrass alone but slightly less than SH. This improvement was due to the combined effect of SH and ryegrass, which reduced raindrop impact, improved loess microstructure, and boosted ryegrass growth. Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic and cumulative environmental pollutant. Siderophores are heavy metal chelators with high affinity to heavy metals, such as Cd. Ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) has a potential remediation capacity for soils contaminated by heavy metals. Consequently, using ryegrass alongside beneficial soil microorganisms that produce siderophores may be an effective means to remediate soils contaminated with Cd. In this study, the Bacillus strains WL1210 and CD303, which were previously isolated from the rhizospheres of Nitraria tangutorum in Wulan and Peganum harmala L. in Dachaidan, Qinghai, China, respectively, both arid and sandy environments, were evaluated for heavy metal pollution mitigation. Our quantitative analyses have discerned that the two bacterial strains possess commendable attributes of phosphorus (P) solubilization and potassium (K) dissolution, coupled with the capacity to produce phytohormones. To assess the heavy metal stress resilience of these strains, they were subjected to a cadmium concentration gradient, revealing their incremental growth despite cadmium presence, indicative of a pronounced tolerance threshold. The subsequent phylogenetic analysis, bolstered by robust genomic data from conserved housekeeping genes, including 16S rDNA, gyr B gene sequencing, as well as dnaK and recA, delineated a species-level phylogenetic tree, thereby confirming the strains as Bacillus atrophaeus. Additionally, we identified the types of iron-carrier-producing strains as catechol (WL1210) and carboxylic acid ferrophilin (CD303). A genomic analysis uncovered functional genes in strain CD303 associated with plant growth and iron carrier biosynthesis, such as fnr and iscA. Ryegrass seed germination assays, alongside morphological and physiological evaluations under diverse heavy metal stress, underscored the strains' potential to enhance ryegrass growth under high cadmium stress when treated with bacterial suspensions. Traditional substrate binder releases greenhouse gases during the production and application processes, and is detrimental to the vegetation restoration on slopes. To develop a new environmentally friendly soil substrate, this paper conducted a serial of experimental studies on the ecological function and mechanical properties of the xanthan gum (XG)-amended clay by plant growth tests and direct shear tests. The improvement mechanism of the xanthan gum (XG)-amended clay has also explored through microscopic examinations. Experimental results of plant growth tests show that the germination of ryegrass seeds and growth of seedlings can be effectively promoted by adding a proper content (≤2%) of XG into clay. Plants in substrates with 2% of XG grew best, while a high content (3-4%) of XG has an inhibitory effect on the plant growth. The results of direct shear tests illustrate that the shear strength and cohesion both increase with the increase of XG contents, while the internal friction has an opposite trend. The improve mechanism of the xanthan gum (XG)-amended clay were also explored by XRD tests and micro-scopic examinations. It is found that shows that XG does not react chemically to form new mineral components after mixing with clay. The mechanism of XG improving clay is mainly because the XG gel can fill the pores between clay particles, and enhance the cementation between clay particles. SUMMARY: Restoring cytonuclear stoichiometry is necessary after whole‐genome duplication (WGD) and interspecific/intergeneric hybridization in plants. We investigated this phenomenon in auto‐ and allopolyploids of the Festuca‐Lolium complex providing insights into the mechanisms governing cytonuclear interactions in early polyploid and hybrid generations. Our study examined the main processes potentially involved in restoring the cytonuclear balance after WGD comparing diploids and new and well‐established autopolyploids. We uncovered that both the number of chloroplasts and the number of chloroplast genome copies were significantly higher in the newly established autopolyploids and grew further in more established autopolyploids. The increase in the copy number of the chloroplast genome exceeded the rise in the number of chloroplasts and fully compensated for the doubling of the nuclear genome. In addition, changes in nuclear and organelle gene expression were insignificant. Allopolyploid Festuca × Lolium hybrids displayed potential structural conflicts in parental protein variants within the cytonuclear complexes. While biased maternal allele expression has been observed in numerous hybrids, our results suggest that its role in cytonuclear stabilization in the Festuca × Lolium hybrids is limited. This study provides insights into the restoration of the cytonuclear stoichiometry, yet it emphasizes the need for future research to explore post‐transcriptional regulation and its impact on cytonuclear gene expression stoichiometry. Background: With the accumulating omics data, an efficient and time-saving transient assay to express target genes is desired. Mesophyll protoplasts, maintaining most stress-physiological responses and cellular activities as intact plants, offer an alternative transient assay to study target genes' effects on heat and oxidative stress responses. Results: In this study, a perennial ryegrass (Loliumperenne L.) mesophyll protoplast-based assay was established to effectively over- or down-regulate target genes. The relative expression levels of the target genes could be quantified using RT-qPCR, and the effects of heat and H2O2-induced oxidative stress on protoplasts' viability could be quantitatively measured. The practicality of the assay was demonstrated by identifying the potential thermos-sensor genes LpTT3.1/LpTT3.2 in ryegrass that over-expressing these genes significantly altered protoplasts' viability rates after heat stress. Perennial ryegrass is the most widely grown temperate grass species globally as a source of forage (grazing, hay, silage) or for amenity use. It is a part of landscape, protects soil from water and wind erosion, enriches it with organic substances and improves its fertility. During the period 2015-2020 in the Institute of Forage crops (IFC) - Pleven a collection nursery was studied in field non-irrigated conditions on leached black soil, in block duplicate method, in 2 replications with a total of 19 accessions of perennial ryegrass, with 50 individual plants each (25 plants for forage and 25 plants - for seeds), including 14 varieties and 5 ecotypes, 10 tetraploid and 9 diploid, from Bulgaria (BG), Belgium (BE), and Romania (RO). The aim is to determine the vitality per year and longevity (after many years, more than 3-4) of perennial ryegrass collection accessions and to make a selection of the most vital and long - lasting genotypes. Scale of survival according to the International Classifier for the family Poaceae (Bukhteeva et al., 1985) was used - limiting factors of the environment are cold - winter, drought and high temperatures - summer. An autumn inventory of the individual plants no./% was carried out annually, as 25 plants per sample = 100%., and vitality classification as follows: Very Low - less than 1 to 20% of plants are left alive; Low - more than 21 to 50%; Medium - more than 51% to 70%; High - more than 71 to 90%; Very High - more than 90% of the plants are still alive. Computer statistical processing of the data (via Excel, at P = 0.05) included variance analyses. Data on vitality and longevity are characterized by: marginal values (min and max), arithmetic mean (x), standard deviation (SD) and coefficient of variation (CV,%). The acidic soils of western Newfoundland require liming for successful production of most crops. Locally sourced paper mill waste wood ash (WA) and paper sludge (SL) have potential as cheaper alternatives to limestone (LIME). Two greenhouse experiments evaluated WA and SL as liming and soil conditioning amendments for annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) production. At 55 days after seeding, soil pH in WA (6.2 and 6.3) and wood ash and paper sludge (WASL) (6.0 and 6.3) were not different from that in LIME (6.0 and 6.5) for Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. However, pH in SL was 0.4 and 0.3 points lower than in LIME. Compared to LIME, WA, SL, and WASL produced 31%–52% and 57%–74% greater biomass yield in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. N uptake was greater in WA (60 and 129 kg N ha−1) and WASL (51 and 97 kg N ha−1) compared to LIME (40 and 85 kg N ha−1), in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. SL did not differ from LIME in Experiment 1, but reduced N uptake by 57% in Experiment 2. The results show significant potential of WA as an alternative amendment for liming and yield improvement of annual ryegrass grown in NL podzolic soils. However, SL has limited potential due to the risk of increasing N immobilization and residual soil mineral N when growing conditions are limiting. Combining SL with WA or biochar seemed to alleviate these risks. Overall, the adoption of these amendments for field production systems warrants serious consideration, following supplemental field studies to determine optimal application rates and timing. Biofertilizers with phosphate-solubilizing microorganism (PSM) inoculations have been suggested to diminish the limitation of phosphorus (P) deficiency in plants. However, their applications in agriculture are restricted due to the inconstant effects of various PSMs. Proper carriers for the inoculations may overcome this shortcoming and improve PSMs' effectiveness. The objective of this study was to investigate whether straw compost, a type of organic material, can act as a carrier for improving the efficiencies of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria and fungi named Acinetobacter sp. and Aspergillus niger, respectively, in soils. We monitored the growth and cellular physiological responses of one type of model plants, named perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), under four soil treatments, including non-fertilization, PSM inoculation alone, straw compost addition alone, and the combined applications of both PSMs and straw compost. We found the combined treatments significantly improved the growth by 14.7% for shoot height and 79.7% for shoot weight, respectively, on average. P and potassium (K) uptakes of ryegrass were also increased by 102.5% and 65.3%, respectively, after the application of both PSMs and straw compost. Furthermore, physiological properties, such as photosynthetic efficiency and P-transportation capacity, of ryegrass were also significantly improved under combined treatments when compared to other treatments, regardless of the types of PSM included. The piecewise structural equation model further indicated that PSM inoculation and straw compost input are synergistically contributing to the nutrient uptake of ryegrass through many direct and indirect ways. We propose that straw compost is a good carrier material for PSMs' survival and would improve their plant growth promotion ability in soil. The premixtures flufenacet plus diflufenican and flufenacet plus diflufenican plus metribuzin are two herbicides recently registered in Greece for weed control in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) with application early post-emergence to the crop (1st–3rd leaf growth stage). To evaluate the selectivity of these new herbicides, pot experiments were conducted by applying flufenacet plus diflufenican at 240 + 120 g ai ha−1 and flufenacet plus diflufenican plus metribuzin at 119.7 + 119.7 + 44.8 g ai ha−1 to bread wheat and barley, at 1st (BBCH-11), 2nd (BBCH-12) and 3rd (BBCH-13) leaf growth stage. The efficacy of the herbicides at the above-mentioned rates in pre-emergence application was also tested on three ALS/ACCase herbicide-resistant populations of Lolium rigidum Gaudin in comparison with the pre-emergence herbicides prosulfocarb and chlorotoluron plus diflufenican at 3200 g ai ha−1 and 1380 + 92 g ai ha−1, respectively. The results revealed decreased selectivity of both premixtures when applied at BBCH-11 for both winter cereals, with flufenacet plus diflufenican being less selective compared to flufenacet plus diflufenican plus metribuzin. Both herbicides highly controlled the three herbicide-resistant L. rigidum populations. The results indicated that both premixtures are effective chemical options for the management of herbicide resistant L. rigidum. Increasing the ultraviolet radiation (UV) level, particularly UV-B due to damage to the stratospheric ozone layer by human activities, has huge negative effects on plant and animal metabolism. As a widely grown cool-season forage grass and turfgrass in the world, perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) is UV-B-sensitive. To study the effects of miR164, a highly conserved microRNA in plants, on perennial ryegrass under UV stress, both OsmiR164a overexpression (OE164) and target mimicry (MIM164) transgenic perennial ryegrass plants were generated using agrobacterium-mediated transformation, and UV-B treatment (~600 μw cm−2) of 7 days was imposed. Morphological and physiological analysis showed that the miR164 gene affected perennial ryegrass UV tolerance negatively, demonstrated by the more scorching leaves, higher leaf electrolyte leakage, and lower relative water content in OE164 than the WT and MIM164 plants after UV stress. The increased UV sensitivity could be partially due to the reduction in antioxidative capacity and the accumulation of anthocyanins. This study indicated the potential of targeting miR164 and/or its targeted genes for the genetic manipulation of UV responses in forage grasses/turfgrasses; further research to reveal the molecular mechanism underlying how miR164 affects plant UV responses is needed. Many studies have focused their attention on strategies to improve soil phytoremediation efficiency. In this study, a pot experiment was carried out to investigate whether Se and Bacillus proteolyticus SES promote Cu-Cd-Cr uptake by ryegrass. To explore the effect mechanism of Se and Bacillus proteolyticus SES, rhizosphere soil physiochemical properties and rhizosphere soil bacterial properties were determined further. The findings showed that Se and Bacillus proteolyticus SES reduced 23.04% Cu, 36.85% Cd, and 9.85% Cr from the rhizosphere soil of ryegrass. Further analysis revealed that soil pH, organic matter, soil enzyme activities, and soil microbial properties were changed with Se and Bacillus proteolyticus SES application. Notably, rhizosphere key taxa (Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Patescibacteria, Verrucomicrobia, Chloroflexi, etc.) were significantly enriched in rhizosphere soil of ryegrass, and those taxa abundance were positively correlated with soil heavy metal contents (P < 0.01). Our study also demonstrated that in terms of explaining variations of soil Cu-Cd-Cr content under Se and Bacillus proteolyticus SES treatment, soil enzyme activities (catalase and acid phosphatase) and soil microbe properties showed 42.5% and 12.2% contributions value, respectively. Overall, our study provided solid evidence again that Se and Bacillus proteolyticus SES facilitated phytoextraction of soil Cu-Cd-Cr, and elucidated the effect of soil key microorganism and chemical factor. A field trial was performed to carry out an enhanced phytoremediation technique for multi-metal contaminated copper tailings by Sudan grass (Sorghum Sudanese), ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), and Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), using conditioner (TH-LZ01) and straw combination into composite amendments as soil amendments, aimed to obtain the maximum of phytoremediation effect. The results showed that compared with untreated herbaceous plants, the application of conditioner and straw planted with herbaceous plants reduced the pH and conductivity and increased the organic matter and water content of the copper tailings to different degrees. With the addition of conditioner and straw, the DTPA-Cd, DTPA-Cu, DTPA-Pb, and DTPA-Zn contents in the copper tailings showed a decreasing trend compared with the untreated group. The herbaceous plants were promoted to reduce the percentage contents of acid soluble fractions Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn and to increase the percentage contents of reducible, oxidizable, and residual fractions heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in the copper tailings to different degrees. The contents of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in the underground part of herbaceous plants were higher than those in the aboveground part, and the contents of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in the aboveground part and underground part decreased after adding conditioner and straw, which indicated that the conditioner and straw inhibited the transport of heavy metals in the plant. Furthermore, the principal component analysis showed that the application of conditioner and straw with planting ryegrass had more potential for improving the physicochemical properties of copper tailings and reducing heavy metal toxicity, followed by Bermuda grass and Sudan grass. Background and Aims In the subfamily Poöideae (Poaceae), certain grass species possess anti-herbivore alkaloids synthesized by fungal endophytes that belong to the genus Epichloë (Clavicipitaceae). The protective role of these symbiotic endophytes can vary, depending on alkaloid concentrations within specific plant–endophyte associations and plant parts. Methods We conducted a literature review to identify articles containing alkaloid concentration data for various plant parts in six important pasture species, Lolium arundinaceum , Lolium perenne , Lolium pratense , Lolium multiflorum | Lolium rigidum and Festuca rubra , associated with their common endophytes. We considered the alkaloids lolines (1-aminopyrrolizidines), peramine (pyrrolopyrazines), ergovaline (ergot alkaloids) and lolitrem B (indole-diterpenes). While all these alkaloids have shown bioactivity against insect herbivores, ergovaline and lolitrem B are harmful for mammals. Key Results Loline alkaloid levels were higher in the perennial grasses L. pratense and L. arundinaceum compared to the annual species L. multiflorum and L. rigidum , and higher in reproductive tissues than in vegetative structures. This is probably due to the greater biomass accumulation in perennial species that can result in higher endophyte mycelial biomass. Peramine concentrations were higher in L. perenne than in L. arundinaceum and not affected by plant part. This can be attributed to the high within-plant mobility of peramine. Ergovaline and lolitrem B, both hydrophobic compounds, were associated with plant parts where fungal mycelium is usually present, and their concentrations were higher in plant reproductive tissues. Only loline alkaloid data were sufficient for below-ground tissue analyses and concentrations were lower than in above-ground parts. Conclusions Our study provides a comprehensive synthesis of fungal alkaloid variation across host grasses and plant parts, essential for understanding the endophyte-conferred defence extent. The patterns can be understood by considering endophyte growth within the plant and alkaloid mobility. Our study identifies research gaps, including the limited documentation of alkaloid presence in roots and the need to investigate the influence of different environmental conditions. Background: Struvite, biochar and ash products (collectively known as STRUBIAS) derived from different waste streams are used as fertilisers in agriculture. Raw dairy processing sludge (DPS) shows promise as bio‐based fertilisers, but secondary STRUBIAS‐derived products need further testing as fertilisers. Aims: The objective of this study was to calculate the phosphorus mineral fertiliser equivalency (P‐MFE) for some STRUBIAS products derived from DPS. Methods: Ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum) pot trials were used to determine the P‐MFE using the apparent P recovery (APR) method for Fe‐DPS and DPS‐derived struvites (Struvite 1–4), hydrochars (HC1–3) and ash. Results: The tested STRUBIAS products can be divided into two groups: (1) a range of products that can (i.e. Struvite 1–3) and (2) cannot (i.e., Struvite 4, HC1–3, ash and Fe‐DPS) be considered fertilisers. In the first group, the P‐MFE ranged from 66.8% to 76.7% for ryegrass and from 77.9% to 93.5% for spring wheat grain. In the second group, the P‐MFE ranged from 7.8% to 58.3% for ryegrass and from −34.5% to −151.3% for spring wheat grain. The negative agronomic effects of some products for wheat grain (struvite and HC) in this study were mainly caused by high Fe content, which could be overcome by improved treatment processes. The objective of this study was to quantify the farm gate nitrogen (N) offset potential of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.; PRG) white clover (Trifolium repens L.; WC) swards by comparing the herbage and milk production from dairy farmlets that were simulations of full farming systems. A study was established where 120 cows were randomly assigned to 4 farmlets of 10.9 ha (stocking rate: 2.75 cow/ha), composed of 20 paddocks each. Cows were fed 526 kg of DM of concentrate on average each year. The 4 grazing treatments were PRG-only at 150 or 250 kg of N/ha and PRG-WC at 150 or 250 kg of N/ha. Cows remained in their treatment group for an entire grazing season and were re-randomized as they calved across treatments each year. As cows calved in the spring as standard practice in Ireland, they were rotationally grazed from early February both day and night (weather permitting) to mid-November, to a target postgrazing sward height of 4.0 cm. Mean sward WC content was 18.1% and 15.4% for the 150 and 250 kg of N/ha PRG-WC treatments, respectively over the 3-yr period. When WC was included, lowering the N rate did not reduce pregrazing yield, pregrazing height, or herbage removed, but those factors decreased significantly when WC was absent. Total annual herbage DM production was 13,771, 15,242, 14,721, and 15,667 kg of DM/ha for PRG-only swards receiving 150 or 250 kg of N/ha and PRG-WC swards receiving 150 or 250 kg of N/ha, respectively. In addition, when WC was present, compressed postgrazing sward heights were lower (4.10 vs. 4.21 cm) and herbage allowance (approximately 17 kg/cow feed allocation per cow per day) higher than the high-N control (+ 0.7 kg of DM/cow per day). There was a significant increase in milk production, both per cow and per hectare, when WC was included in PRG swards. Over the 3-yr study, cows grazing PRG-WC had greater milk (+304 kg) and milk solids (+31 kg of fat + protein) yields than cows grazing PRG-only swards. This significant increase in milk production suggests that the inclusion of WC in grazing systems can be effectively used to increase milk production per cow and per hectare and help offset nitrogen use. This result shows the potential to increase farm gate N use efficiency and reduce the N surplus compared with PRG-dominant sward grazing systems receiving 250 kg of N/ha, without negatively affecting milk solids yield or herbage production, thus increasing farm profit by €478/ha. Heavy metal contamination is an urgent ecological governance problem in mining areas. In order to seek for a green and environmentally friendly reagent with better plant restoration effect to solve the problem of low efficiency in plant restoration in heavy metal pollution soil. In this study, we evaluated the effects of three biodegradable chelating agents, namely citric acid (CA), fulvic acid (FA) and polyaspartic acid (PASP), on the physicochemical properties of copper tailings, growth of ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and heavy metal accumulation therein. The results showed that the chelating agent application improved the physicochemical properties of copper tailings, increased the biomass of ryegrass and enriched more Cu and Cd in copper tailings. In the control group, the main existing forms of Cu and Cd were oxidizable state, followed by residual, weak acid soluble and reducible states. After the CA, FA or PASP application, Cu and Cd were converted from the residual and oxidizable states to the reducible and weak acid soluble states, whose bioavailability in copper tailings were thus enhanced. Besides, the chelating agent incorporation improved the Cu and Cd extraction efficiencies of ryegrass from copper tailings, as manifested by increased root and stem contents of Cu and Cd by 30.29–103.42%, 11.43–74.29%, 2.98–110.98% and 11.11–111.11%, respectively, in comparison with the control group. In the presence of multiple heavy metals, CA, FA or PASP showed selectivity regarding the ryegrass extraction of heavy metals from copper tailings. PCA analysis revealed that the CA-4 and PASP-7 treatment had great remediation potentials against Cu and Cd in copper tailings, respectively, as manifested by increases in Cu and Cd contents in ryegrass by 90.98% and 74.29% compared to the CK group. Aluminum (Al) toxicity and phosphorus (P) deficiency are widely recognized as major constraints to agricultural productivity in acidic soils. Under this scenario, the development of ryegrass plants with enhanced P use efficiency and Al resistance is a promising approach by which to maintain pasture production. In this study, we assessed the contribution of growth traits, P efficiency, organic acid anion (OA) exudation, and the expression of Al-responsive genes in improving tolerance to concurrent low-P and Al stress in ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Ryegrass plants were hydroponically grown under optimal (0.1 mM) or low-P (0.01 mM) conditions for 21 days, and further supplied with Al (0 and 0.2 mM) for 3 h, 24 h and 7 days. Accordingly, higher Al accumulation in the roots and lower Al translocation to the shoots were found in ryegrass exposed to both stresses. Aluminum toxicity and P limitation did not change the OA exudation pattern exhibited by roots. However, an improvement in the root growth traits and P accumulation was found, suggesting an enhancement in Al tolerance and P efficiency under combined Al and low-P stress. Al-responsive genes were highly upregulated by Al stress and P limitation, and also closely related to P utilization efficiency. Purpose: The study examines the efficacy of using recycled abattoir waste fertilizer as a sustainable nutrient input for crop Production. Method: Two pot experiments were set up in a controlled environment room to examine biomass yields of ryegrass (Lolium perenne AberMagic), grain yields of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum KWS Cochise), and their micro and macronutrient uptakes, respectively, in an abattoir waste organomineral fertilizer amended soil compared to those treated with inorganic NPK fertilizer. Phosphorus was added at rates of 0, 25, 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 800, 1000, and 1200 mg P kg-1 in a low P south-west England soil. Results: Total biomass yields of ryegrass in the NPK treatments were higher at application rates greater than 800 mg P kg-1 soil compared with their corresponding abattoir waste organomineral fertilizer (Thallo™) treatments. Total wheat dry grain weights increased with P addition rates in both the Thallo™ and NPK amended soils until the application rates exceeded 800 mg P kg-1 when the dry grain weights started to decline. Micronutrient concentrations in grass produced from Thallo™ fertilizer-amended soils were similar to those from their corresponding NPK fertilizer treatments. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that if the Thallo™ is added at rates not exceeding 200 mg P kg-1 soil to 300 mg P kg-1 soil, it can serve as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative P source for ryegrass and wheat grain production. Light intensity plays a critical regulatory role in determining plant yield and quality, and energy consumption in plant factory with artificial light (PFAL). The effects of different light intensities (200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 µmol·m−2·s−1) of light-emitting diodes (LED) red and blue light with ratio 4:1 on growth, quality, nitrogen and amino acid metabolisms of ryegrass were investigated. The results showed the tiller number and shoot fresh weight in ryegrass were increased, while plant height and stem diameter remained stable with the improvement of light intensity. The highest levels of soluble protein, free amino acid, and DPPH free radical clearance rate in photon flux density (PPFD) at 500 µmol·m−2·s−1, and then significantly decreased with light intensity increased. The highest soluble sugar content was found at PPFD of 600 µmol·m−2·s−1, while malondialdehyde (MDA) content remained stable in all treatments. As the light intensity increased, nitrate content decreased, while nitrate reductase (NR) activity and the ammonium content increased. As light intensity was increased from 200 to 600 µmol·m−2·s−1, nitrite reductase (NiR) activity first decreased and then increased. Moreover, glutamate and cysteine contents increased first and then decreased, while glutamate synthase (GOGAT), glutamine synthase (GS), glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH), and cysteine synthases (CS) activities increased continuously with light intensity. Light intensity was significantly correlated with the parameters of growth, quality, nitrogen and amino acid metabolisms in ryegrass. It was recommended that PPFD at 400–500 µmol·m−2·s−1, photoperiod of 16 h/d was suitable for ryegrass high-efficient production in PFAL with relatively low energy cost. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drought stress, which often occurs repeatedly across the world, can cause multiple and long-term effects on plant growth. However, the repeated drought–rewatering effects on plant growth remain uncertain. This study was conducted to determine the effects of drought–rewatering cycles on aboveground growth and explore the underlying mechanisms. Perennial ryegrass plants were subjected to three watering regimes: well-watered control (W), two cycles of drought–rewatering (D2R), and one cycle of drought–rewatering (D1R). The results indicated that the D2R treatment increased the tiller number by 40.9% and accumulated 28.3% more aboveground biomass compared with W; whereas the D1R treatment reduced the tiller number by 23.9% and biomass by 42.2% compared to the W treatment. A time-course transcriptome analysis was performed using crown tissues obtained from plants under D2R and W treatments at 14, 17, 30, and 33 days (d). A total number of 2272 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified. In addition, an in-depth weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was carried out to investigate the relationship between RNA-seq data and tiller number. The results indicated that DEGs were enriched in photosynthesis-related pathways and were further supported by chlorophyll content measurements. Moreover, tiller-development-related hub genes were identified in the D2R treatment, including F-box/LRR-repeat MAX2 homolog (D3), homeobox-leucine zipper protein HOX12-like (HOX12), and putative laccase-17 (LAC17). The consistency of RNA-seq and qRT-PCR data were validated by high Pearson's correlation coefficients ranging from 0.899 to 0.998. This study can provide a new irrigation management strategy that might increase plant biomass with less water consumption. Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.; drought resistant) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.; drought sensitive) are economically important grass species contrasting in drought stress resistance. This study determined the optimal chlorophyll fluorescence parameters to indicate drought incidence and whether the parameters differentiate intra‐ and interspecies variations in drought stress. For each species, nine cultivars were exposed to well‐watered or drought (water withheld) conditions in growth chambers containing high‐throughput photosynthetic imagers to track real‐time responses of maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm), quantum yield of photosystem II (ΦII), non‐photochemical quenching (NPQ), energy‐dependent quenching (qE), and photoinhibition‐associated quenching (qI). Soil moisture content and relative water content of leaf tissues were evaluated. Due to drought, Fv/Fm and ΦII decreased for cultivars of both species but earlier for perennial ryegrass compared to Kentucky bluegrass. The NPQ, qI, and qE values exhibited more dynamic and earlier changes due to drought compared to Fv/Fm and ΦII and allowed for early, mid, and late drought responses to be illustrated. Drought induced an increase in NPQ, qI, and qE values, which corresponded to activation of photoprotection mechanisms, and was exhibited earlier for perennial ryegrass compared to Kentucky bluegrass. As the drought treatment progressed, a decrease or stabilization of low values of NPQ, qI, and qE was observed, and the lowest values were associated with the most drought‐sensitive cultivars. These results indicate important stress tolerance protection mechanisms for grass species and will broadly impact basic and applied grass research as a nondestructive phenotyping tool. Cytochrome P450s (CYPs) play crucial roles in regulating plant growth, development, and stress tolerance. In this study, a perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) CYP gene, LpCYP72A15, was identified as a candidate gene regulating plant osmotic stress tolerance based on a cDNA library screening in the background of yeast ∆hog1 mutant. LpCYP72A15 is localized in the plastids, and its expression was regulated by osmotic stress and ABA treatment. Overexpressing LpCYP72A15 significantly enhanced plant drought tolerance in both Arabidopsis and perennial ryegrass. Under drought stress, the transgenic ryegrass showed significant lower reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, higher ROS‐scavenging enzymatic activities, and higher soluble sugar contents than the wildtype plants. Transient over‐expressing the gene also enhanced survival rates of ryegrass mesophyll protoplasts under H2O2‐induced oxidative or mannitol‐enforced osmotic stresses. The co-allocation of photovoltaic arrays with crops presents a promising strategy to mitigate the conflict between photovoltaics and agricultural land. However, there is a notable lack of quantitative research on the impact of agrivoltaic system on land quality in fragile areas. In this study, peanuts (Arachis hypogaea) and ryegrass (Lolium perenne) were cultivated in photovoltaic array in the dry–hot valley of southwest China, with an off-site native land serving as the control. Sixteen soil physicochemical and biochemical parameters were measured in the gap and under-panel and control area. Results demonstrated that the agrivoltaic system significantly enhanced soil moisture, organic carbon, nitrogen–phosphorus–potassium nutrients, microbial biomass, and urease activity. It also led to varying degrees of increase in soil pH and electrical conductivity, along with reduced soil sucrase and phosphatase activity. In comparison to the control, the agrivoltaic system notably improved soil quality and multifunctionality. Specially, gap cultivation had a more pronounced positive impact on soil quality than under-panel cultivation, and the cultivation of peanuts had a greater effect on soil quality and multifunctionality improvement than ryegrass. This study provides fundamental data to support the improvement of land quality in photovoltaic developed regions, and to alleviate the conflict between photovoltaics and agricultural land. Due to the lack of conclusive articles on the effect of guano, which is classified as a natural fertiliser, an experiment was conducted to evaluate its effect on the yield and quality of perennial ryegrass of the Rela variety. The guano used in the experiment contained significant concentrations in g·kg-1 DM of nitrogen (23.1), phosphorus (9.52) and magnesium (2.90). The concentration of heavy metals did not exceed the applicable standards in organic fertilisers. The total content of N and P in guano was higher relative to K, and Mg and Ca were similar. The concentration of N and Mg in guano is comparable to the content of these elements in poultry manure. The guano reaction was slightly acidic (5.86). The fertiliser value of guano was assessed in a vegetation-weed two-factor experiment. The test scheme included control, guano and guano with ammonium nitrate applied at three doses. The dry biomass yield of perennial ryegrass from individual cuts varied considerably. The objects with applied guano and guano with ammonium nitrate increased the average yield of perennial ryegrass from cut 1 by 102.9% compared to the control object. Applied guano fertilisation significantly increased the sum of perennial ryegrass yield from three cuts. As a result of the applied fertilisation, there was an increase in N, P and Ca content in perennial ryegrass, while K and Mg content increased to a negligible extent and thus contributed to optimal ionic ratios of Ca:P and K:(Ca+Mg). In contrast, the ionic ratio K:Mg deviated significantly from the optimal values for plants. The application of guano and guano with ammonium nitrate influenced the positive correlation between N and Ca content and the obtained yield of perennial ryegrass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
