2. Boosting Kidney Stone Identification in Endoscopic Images Using Two-Step Transfer Learning

Abstract

Knowing the cause of kidney stone formation is crucial to establish treatments that prevent recurrence. There are currently different approaches for determining the kidney stone type. However, the reference ex-vivo identification procedure can take up to several weeks, while an in-vivo visual recognition requires highly trained specialists. Machine learning models have been developed to provide urologists with an automated classification of kidney stones during an ureteroscopy; however, there is a general lack in terms of quality of the training data and methods. In this work, a two-step transfer learning approach is used to train the kidney stone classifier. The proposed approach transfers knowledge learned on a set of images of kidney stones acquired with a CCD camera (ex-vivo dataset) to a final model that classifies images from endoscopic images (ex-vivo dataset). The results show that learning features from different domains with similar information helps to improve the performance of a model that performs classification in real conditions (for instance, uncontrolled lighting conditions and blur). Finally, in comparison to models that are trained from scratch or by initializing ImageNet weights, the obtained results suggest that the two-step approach extracts features improving the identification of kidney stones in endoscopic images., Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication. Abstract

Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other. In this spirit, this white paper describes the R&D activities required to prepare for this software upgrade.

This study introduces a paradigm-shifting approach to optimize mitochondrial targeting. Employing a new fluorescent probe strategy, we unravel a combined influence of both Nernst potential (ψ) and partitioning (P) contributions. Through the synthesis of new benz[e]indolinium-derived probes, our findings redefine the landscape of mitochondrial localization by optimizing the efficacy of mitochondrial probe retention in primary cortical neurons undergoing normoxia and oxygen--glucose deprivation. This methodology not only advances our understanding of subcellular dynamics, but also holds promise for transformative applications in biomedical research and therapeutic development. Abstract

In this work, we report on the deposition of microcrystalline silicon (µc-Si:H) films produced from silane (SiH4), hydrogen (H2), and argon (Ar) mixtures using the plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique at 200 °C. Particularly, we studied the effect of RF power on the crystalline fraction (XC) of the deposited films, and we have correlated the XC with their optical, electrical, and structural characteristics. Different types of characterization were performed in the µc-Si:H film series. We used several techniques, such as Raman scattering spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), among others. Our results show that RF power had a strong effect on the XC of the films, and there is an optimal value for producing films with the largest XC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

49. Los problemas de accesibilidad de la población mayor a la asistencia sanitaria. El caso de Castilla y León (España)

This accessibility is worst on the rural areas that, furthermore, are often older spaces and more demanding of health resources. In the case of Castilla y León, there are areas whose access to health resources is very limited due to the time that the population has to spend travelling to these resources. This study identifies the Basic Health Areas with accessibility problems and quantifies the time spent by the population of Castilla y León travelling to their reference hospitals, as well as their level of ageing. The results of this territorial analysis confirm that Basic Health Areas furthest from the hospitals correspond to rural areas with a high level of ageing, thus aggravating the problem of emptying of health services that rural areas have been experiencing since the 2008 crisis. Abstract

[spa] La accesibilidad de la población a los recursos sanitarios es fundamental para que exista una equidad social entre los habitantes de un territorio. Esta accesibilidad es peor en las áreas rurales, que, además, suelen ser espacios más envejecidos y demandantes de recursos sanitarios. En Castilla y León, existen zonas cuyo acceso a los recursos sanitarios está muy limitado debido al tiempo que ha de invertir la población para desplazarse hacia estos recursos. En este trabajo se identifican las Zonas Básicas de Salud con problemas de accesibilidad y se cuantifica el tiempo de desplazamiento que ha de utilizar la población de Castilla y León hacia sus hospitales de referencia, así como su nivel de envejecimiento. Los resultados de este análisis territorial confirman que las Zonas Básicas de Salud más alejadas de los hospitales corresponden a áreas rurales con un envejecimiento elevado, agravando así el problema de vaciamiento de servicios sanitarios que vive el espacio rural desde la crisis de 2008. Esta investigación puede ayudar a plantear una reordenación de los recursos sanitarios en Castilla y León y en otros territorios donde se podría aplicar esta metodología, ayudando a que la población rural tenga un mejor acceso a los mismos.
