The adsorbed nanobubbles inside the nanochannels can cause fluid transport blockages, which will obviously degrade the nanodevice performance and reduce the lifetime. However, due to small-scale effects, the removal of nanobubbles is a huge challenge at the nanoscale. Herein, molecular dynamics simulations are carried out to study the effect of the electrostatic field on underwater nitrogen nanobubbles confined in nanochannels. It is found that the nanobubbles will collapse under an appropriate electrostatic field, thereby unblocking the transport of water in the nanochannels. The formation of ordered water structures induced by electrostatic fields plays an important role in the removal of nanobubbles from the nanochannels. Our findings provide a convenient, controllable, and remote way to address the blockage problem of nanobubbles in nanochannels, which may have potential applications in improving the performance of fuel cells.

Exserolides are isocoumarin derivatives containing lactone moiety. Recently, some isocoumarins have been demonstrated to ameliorate hyperlipidemia, a major factor for inducing cardiovascular diseases. However, the effects and mechanisms of action of exserolides on hyperlipidemia are not known. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the marine fungus Setosphaeria sp.-derived exserolides (compounds I, J, E, and F) exert lipid-lowering effects via improving reverse cholesterol transport (RCT) in vitro . RAW264.7 macrophages and HepG2 cells were used to establish lipid-laden models, and the levels of intracellular lipids and RCT-related proteins were determined by assay kits and Western blotting, respectively. We observed that exserolides (at a 5 μM concentration) significantly decreased intracellular cholesterol and triglyceride levels in oxidized low-density lipoprotein-laden RAW264.7 cells and markedly improved [ 3 H]-cholesterol efflux. Among the four tested compounds, exserolide J increased the protein levels of ATP-binding cassette transporter A1, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα), and liver X receptor α (LXRα). Furthermore, treatment with exserolides significantly decreased oleic acid-laden lipid accumulation in HepG2 hepatocytes. Mechanistically, exserolides enhance PPARα protein levels; furthermore, compound J increases cholesterol 7 alpha-hydroxylase A1 and LXRα protein levels. Molecular docking revealed that exserolides, particularly compound J, can interact with PPARα and LXRα proteins. These data suggest that the terminal carboxyl group of compound J plays a key role in lowering lipid levels by stimulating LXRα and PPARα proteins. In conclusion, compound J exhibits powerful lipid-lowering effects in vitro . Inflammation and dyslipidemia are critical inducing factors of atherosclerosis. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are ligand-activated transcription factors and control the expression of multiple genes that are involved in lipid metabolism and inflammatory responses. However, synthesized PPAR agonists exhibit contrary therapeutic effects and various side effects in atherosclerosis therapy. Natural products are structural diversity and have a good safety. Recent studies find that natural herbs and compounds exhibit attractive therapeutic effects on atherosclerosis by alleviating hyperlipidemia and inflammation through modulation of PPARs. Importantly, the preparation of natural products generally causes significantly lower environmental pollution compared to that of synthesized chemical compounds. Therefore, it is interesting to discover novel PPAR modulator and develop alternative strategies for atherosclerosis therapy based on natural herbs and compounds. This article reviews recent findings, mainly from the year of 2020 to present, about the roles of natural herbs and compounds in regulation of PPARs and their therapeutic effects on atherosclerosis. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and hyperlipidemia is one major inducing factor of CVD. It is worthy to note that fucoidans are reported to have hypolipidemic activity with species specificity; however, the underlying mechanisms of action are far from clarification. This study is aimed at investigating the plasma lipid-lowering mechanisms of the fucoidan from L. japonica Aresch by detecting the levels of hepatic genes that are involved in lipid metabolism. Our results demonstrated that the fucoidan F3 significantly lowered total cholesterol and triglyceride in C57BL/6J mice fed a high-fat diet. In the mouse liver, fucoidan F3 intervention significantly increased the gene expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) α , liver X receptor (LXR) α and β , and ATP-binding cassette transporter (ABC) G1 and G8 and decreased the expression of proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9), low-density lipoprotein receptor, cholesterol 7 alpha-hydroxylase A1, and sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP) 1c and SREBP-2. These results demonstrated that the antihyperlipidemic effects of fucoidan F3 are related to its activation of PPAR α and LXR/ABC signaling pathways and inactivation of SREBPs. As a typical type of persistent organic pollutant, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is pervasive in the environment. Multiple studies have found that PFOA has hepatotoxicity, but the mechanism remains poorly understood. In this study, the toxic effects of different concentrations of PFOA on zebrafish liver cells were systematically assessed by recording cell survival, ultrastructural observations, and transcriptome analyses. The results showed that the inhibition of cell viability and the massive accumulation of autophagic vacuoles were observed at 400 µM PFOA, while transcriptomic changes occurred with treatments of 1 and 400 µM PFOA. The transcription levels of 1055 (977 up- and 78 down-regulated genes) and 520 (446 up- and 74 down-regulated genes) genes were significantly changed after treatment with 1 and 400 µM PFOA, respectively. Based on Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis, significant expression changes were observed in autophagy, tight junction, signal transduction, immune system, endocrine system, and metabolism-related pathways, indicating that such processes were greatly affected by PFOA exposure. Desaturase is one of the key enzymes in the unsaturated fatty acid synthesis pathway. Δ9 desaturase catalyzes the synthesis of oleic acid from stearic acid by introducing double bonds in the 9th and 10th carbon chains, thereby increasing the content of MUFAs in the body. In order to explore the main function of the Δ9 desaturase gene under low temperature stress, RACE-PCR technology was used in this study to clone the full-length sequence of the CqFAD9-like from the hepatopancreas of red claw crayfish, Cherax quadricarinatus. The full length of the sequence is 1236 bp, and the open reading frame is 1041 bp, encoding 346 amino acid residues. The 5 'UTR is 116 bp, the 3' UTR is 79 bp, and the 3 'UTR contains a PloyA tail. The predicted theoretical isoelectric point and molecular weight are 8.68 and 40.28 kDa, respectively. Homology analysis showed that the sequence had the highest similarity with FAD9 from crustaceans. The results of real-time PCR showed that the expression level of this gene was highest in the hepatopancreas, which was significantly higher than other tissues, followed by the ovaries, brain ganglion and stomach. At the same time, the expression of the CqFAD9-like in hepatopancreas of crayfish cultured at 25, 20, 15 and 9 °C for four weeks was detected. The results showed that expression of the FAD9 gene increased gradually with decreasing temperature, indicating that metabolic desaturation might play a regulatory role during cold stress., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Recent studies have demonstrated that commercially available lipid-lowering drugs cause various side effects; therefore, searching for anti-hyperlipidaemic compounds with lower toxicity is a research hotspot. This study was designed to investigate whether the marine-derived compound, 5-hydroxy-3-methoxy-5-methyl-4-butylfuran-2(5H)-one, has an anti-hyperlipidaemic activity, and the potential underlying mechanism in vitro. Results showed that the furanone had weaker cytotoxicity compared to positive control drugs. In RAW 264.7 cells, the furanone significantly lowered ox-LDL-induced lipid accumulation (~50%), and its triglyceride (TG)-lowering effect was greater than that of liver X receptor (LXR) agonist T0901317. In addition, it significantly elevated the protein levels of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARα) and ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, which could be partially inhibited by LXR antagonists, GSK2033 and SR9243. In HepG2 cells, it significantly decreased oleic acid-induced lipid accumulation, enhanced the protein levels of low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR), ABCG5, ABCG8 and PPARα, and reduced the expression of sterol regulatory element-binding protein 2 (~32%). PPARα antagonists, GW6471 and MK886, could significantly inhibit the furanone-induced lipid-lowering effect. Furthermore, the furanone showed a significantly lower activity on the activation of the expression of lipogenic genes compared to T0901317. Taken together, the furanone exhibited a weak cytotoxicity but had powerful TC- and TG-lowering effects most likely through targeting LXRα and PPARα, respectively. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of VMP regimen applied to the patients with low-risk gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (LR-GTN) treated in Anhui provincial hospital., Materials and Methods: Between 2005 and 2017, 87 patients with low-risk gestational trophoblastic neoplasia received VMP regimen, consisted of vincristine (VCR), methotrexate (MTX) and platinum (cisplatin, carboplatin or nedaplatin), 68 of whom received VMP as their first-line chemotherapy, and 19 methotrexate-failed patients received VMP regimen as their second-line chemotherapy. The staging and scoring system was based on International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO 2000) criteria. We describe and analyze their baseline characteristics, remission/resistance/recurrence rates, adverse reactions and prognosis., Results: The first-line VMP protocol can achieve an 83.8% remission rate and it tended to develop resistance when the pretreatment β-hCG reaches 7503.5 IU/L, and can achieve complete remission with FAV and EMA-CO as the salvage regimen. Among the 19 methotrexate-failed patients, 2 of whom were yet resistant to VMP regimen, followed by several courses of salvage chemotherapy such as FAV and EMP, and achieved 89.5% remission rate in second-line VMP group. Resistance to this regimen was obviously related with higher pre-treatment HCG whether used as primary or salvage treatment. Severe myelosuppression (grade 3 or 4) was shown in 4 (5.9%) of 68 cases, of which none was grade 4., Conclusion: For patients diagnosed with LR-GTN VMP regimen was a safe and effective treatment with a high rate of remission., (Copyright © 2019. Since the 2007 discovery that molecular hydrogen (H 2 ) has selective antioxidant properties, multiple studies have shown that H 2 has beneficial effects in diverse animal models and human disease. This review discusses H 2 biological effects and potential mechanisms of action in various diseases, including metabolic syndrome, organ injury, and cancer; describes effective H 2 delivery approaches; and summarizes recent progress toward H 2 applications in human medicine. We also discuss remaining questions in H 2 therapy, and conclude with an appeal for a greater role for H 2 in the prevention and treatment of human ailments that are currently major global health burdens. To study how hydrogen-rich saline (HS) promotes the recovery of testicular biological function in a hemi-sectioned spinal cord injury (hSCI) rat model, a right hemisection was performed at the T11-T12 of the spinal cord in Wistar rats. Animals were divided into four groups: normal group; vehicle group: sham-operated rats administered saline; hSCI group: subjected to hSCI and administered saline; HRST group: subjected to hSCI and administered HS. Hind limb neurological function, testis index, testicular morphology, mean seminiferous tubular diameter (MSTD) and seminiferous epithelial thickness (MSET), the expression of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), mitofusin-2 (MFN-2), and high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB-1), cell ultrastructure, and apoptosis of spermatogenic cells were studied. The results indicated that hSCI significantly decreased the hind limb neurological function, testis index, MSTD, and MSET, and induced severe testicular morphological injury. The MFN-2 level was decreased, and HO-1 and HMGB-1 were overexpressed in testicular tissues. In addition, hSCI accelerated the apoptosis of spermatogenic cells and the ultrastructural damage of cells in the hypophysis and testis. After HS administration, all these parameters were considerably improved, and the characteristics of hSCI testes were similar to those of normal control testes. Taken together, HS administration can promote the recovery of testicular biological function by anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic action. More importantly, HS can inhibit the hSCI-induced ultrastructural changes in gonadotrophs, ameliorate the abnormal regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-testis axis, and thereby promote the recovery of testicular injury. HS administration also inhibited the hSCI-induced ultrastructural changes in testicular spermatogenic cells, Sertoli cells and interstitial cells.

Electrochemical water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen is a promising technology for sustainable energy storage. The development of earth-abundant transition metal phosphides (TMPs) to catalyze the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and TMP-derived oxy-hydroxides to catalyze the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has recently drawn considerable attention. However, most monolithically integrated metal phosphide electrodes are prepared by laborious multi-step methods and their operational stability at high current densities has been rarely studied. Herein, we report a novel vapor-solid synthesis of single-crystalline cobalt phosphide nanowires (CoP NWs) on a porous Co foam and demonstrate their use in overall water splitting. The CoP NWs grown on the entire surface of the porous Co foam ligaments have a large aspect ratio, and hence are able to provide a large catalytically accessible surface over a given geometrical area. Comprehensive investigation shows that under the OER conditions CoP NWs are progressively and conformally converted to CoOOH through electrochemical in situ oxidation/dephosphorization; the latter serving as an active species to catalyze the OER. The in situ oxidized electrode shows exceptional electrocatalytic performance for the OER in 1.0 M KOH, delivering 100 mA cm -2 at an overpotential ( η ) of merely 300 mV and a small Tafel slope of 78 mV dec -1 as well as excellent stability at various current densities. Meanwhile, the CoP NW electrode exhibits superior catalytic activity for the HER in the same electrolyte, affording -100 mA cm -2 at η = 244 mV and showing outstanding stability. An alkaline electrolyzer composed of two symmetrical CoP NW electrodes can deliver 10 and 100 mA cm -2 at low cell voltages of 1.56 and 1.78 V, respectively. The CoP NW electrolyzer demonstrates exceptional long-term stability for overall water splitting, capable of working at 20 and 100 mA cm -2 for 1000 h without obvious degradation.

Flowerlike WSe2 and WS2 microspheres were synthesized by a facile and scalable one-pot solvothermal method. Their formation mechanism followed the reaction between dissolved W(CO)6 and dissolved S or melted Se without complete decomposition of W(CO)6 into tungsten. As novel efficient sorbents, WSe2 and WS2 demonstrated outstanding uptake capacities for Pb(2+) and Hg(2+).

Large-area and highly crystalline CVD-grown multilayer MoSe2 films exhibit a well-defined crystal structure (2H phase) and large grains reaching several hundred micrometers. Multilayer MoSe2 transistors exhibit high mobility up to 121 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) and excellent mechanical stability. Series of catalysts made of Pt nanoparticles supported on reduced graphene oxides (Pt/RGO) were synthesized and tested in methanol oxidation reaction, aiming for optimizing the mass-specific activity of prepared Pt/RGO composites. The loading amount of Pt is controlled through setting different reaction time and determined precisely by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The structure of Pt/RGO composites is characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The electrochemical testing data reveal that the Pt/RGO-mass-specific activity, judged by current density and long-term stability, is maximized in the sample in which cooperation of the Pt loading amount and electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) per amount of Pt is best optimized. The performance of the catalyst with smallest Pt particles or highest Pt loading amount is dragged down by either too less Pt loading or poor ECSA per amount of Pt. The results in this research demonstrate that the mass-normalized activity of whole catalyst, which is associated with the anticipated power output per amount of catalyst, could be enhanced significantly by deliberate tuning of fabrication process.

The key challenges in enhancing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of a quantum dot-sensitized solar cell (QDSSC) are efficiently achieving charge separation at the photoanode and improving the charge transfer, which is limited by the interface between the electrolyte and the counter electrode (CE). Here, hierarchically assembled ITO@Cu2S nanowire arrays with conductive single-crystalline ITO cores and Cu2S nanocrystal shells were designed as efficient QDSSCs CEs. These arrays not only provided an efficient three-dimensional charge transport network but also allowed for the effective deposition of more Cu2S nanocrystals as active sites to catalyze the electrolyte reaction. This design considerably reduced the sheet and charge transfer resistance of the CE, thus decreasing the series resistance and increasing the shunt resistance of the QDSSC. As a result, QDSSCs with this CE exhibited an unprecedentedly high Voc of 0.688 V, a fill factor of 58.39%, and a PCE of 6.12%, which is 21.2% higher than that of the conventional brass/Cu2S CE.

Pd nanoparticles were successfully introduced into the channels of mesoporous silica MCM-41 with their dispersion well-tuned. We identified the dual role played by CTAB, which was critical for both the micelle template and Pd grafting, leading to the formation of a highly active Pd-MCM-41 nanocomposite for catalysing the Suzuki reaction.

We conducted a case-control study to investigate the role of 3 single-nucleotide polymorphisms of the gene encoding transforming growth factor-b1 (TGFB1) in the development of metastatic brain tumors in non-small cell lung cancer patients. The polymorphisms in TGFB1 rs4803455, rs1800469, and rs1800470 were evaluated by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Odds ratios and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals were used to assess the influence of TGFB1 rs4803455, rs1800469, and rs1800470 on metastatic brain tumors. We found that cases were more likely to have a later disease stage when compared with control subjects, without brain metastasis. Individuals carrying the TGFB1 rs1800469 TT and CT+TT genotypes had an increased risk of developing brain metastasis compared with the rs1800469 CC genotype. Moreover, a significant interaction was observed between the rs1800469 polymorphism and disease stage. However, no significant association between polymorphisms rs4803455 and rs1800470 and the risk of developing brain metastasis were observed. We found that the TGFB1 rs1800469 polymorphism may be predictive biomarker for the risk of developing brain metastasis in non-small cell lung cancer patients.

Aim: To investigate into the potential involvement of pyrin containing 3 gene (NLRP3), a member of the nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptors with cytosolic pattern recognition, in the host defense of corneas against viruses., Methods: The herpes viral keratitis model was utilized in BALB/c mice with inoculation of herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1). Corneal tissues removed during therapy of patients with viral keratitis as well as a Simian vacuolating virus 40 (SV40)-immortalized human corneal epithelial cell line were also examined. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect NLRP3 in these subjects, focusing on their distribution in tissue or cells. Western blot was used to measure the level of NLRP3 and another two related molecules in NLPR3 inflammasome, namely caspase-1 and IL-1β., Results: The NLRP3 activation induced by HSV-1 infection in corneas was accompanied with redistribution of NLRP3 from the cytoplasm to the nucleus in both murine and human corneal epithelial cells. Furthermore, in the SV40-immortalized human corneal epithelial cells, NLRP3 was exclusively located in the nucleus, and treatment of the cells with high concentration of extracellular potassium (known as an inhibitor of NLRP3 activation) effectively drove NLRP3 back to the cytoplasm as reflected by both immunohistochemistry and Western blot., Conclusion: It is proposed that herpes virus infection activates and causes redistribution of NLRP3 to nuclei. Whether this NLRP3 translocation occurs with other viral infections and in other cell types merit further study.

Warfarin is an anticoagulant that is difficult to administer because of the wide variation in dose requirements to achieve a therapeutic effect. CYP2C9, VKROC1, and CYP4F2 play important roles in warfarin metabolism, and their genetic polymorphisms are related to the variability in dose determination. In this study we describe a new multiplex pyrosequencing method to identify CYP2C9*3 (rs1057910), VKORC1*2 (rs9923231), and CYP4F2*3 (rs2108661) simultaneously. A multiplex pyrosequencing method to simultaneously detect CYP2C9*3, VKORC1*2, and CYP4F2*3 alleles was designed. We assessed the allele frequencies of the polymorphisms in 250 Korean subjects using the multiplex pyrosequencing method. The results showed 100 % concordance between single and multiplex pyrosequencing methods, and the polymorphisms identified by pyrosequencing were also validated with the direct sequencing method. The allele frequencies of these polymorphisms in this population were as follows: 0.040 for CYP2C9*3, 0.918 for VKORC1*2, and 0.416 for CYP4F2*3. Although the allele frequencies of the CYP2C9*3 and VKROC1*2 were comparable to those in Japanese and Chinese populations, their frequencies in this Korean population differed from those in other ethnic groups; the CYP4F2*3 frequency was the highest among other ethnic populations including Chinese and Japanese populations. The pyrosequencing methods developed were rapid and reliable for detecting CYP2C9*3, VKORC1*2, and CYP4F2*3. Large ethnic differences in the frequency of these genetic polymorphisms were noted among ethnic groups. CYP4F2*3 exhibited its highest allele frequency among other ethnic populations compared to that in a Korean population.

Background: Depressive symptoms are frequent in idiopathic restless legs syndrome (RLS). However, little is known, so far, about the neurological basis. The present study aimed to explore the neuroanatomical anomalies in depressed drug-naïve RLS patients using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis., Methods: We recruited 16 drug-naïve idiopathic RLS patients with depressive symptoms (RLS-D), 18 drug-naïve idiopathic RLS patients without depressive symptoms (RLS-ND), and 18 normal controls. All participants underwent structural MRI scans on a 3-T MR system. The differences in regional gray matter (GM) density were determined across groups by VBM8. Additional regression analysis was used to identify any associations between regional GM density and clinical symptoms., Results: GM density of the bilateral anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) was significantly reduced in RLS-D patients when compared to RLS-ND patients or to the healthy controls. However, there were no significant differences of GM density either when the whole RLS group or the RLS-ND group was compared to healthy controls, respectively. Particularly, we found GM density of right ACC was negatively correlated with the severity and duration of depressive symptoms in RLS-D patients., Conclusions: Depressive symptoms are associated with GM anomalies in ACC in patients with RLS. C60 fullerenol was found to be a highly active, selective and stable catalyst for cycloaddition between CO2 and epoxides to produce various cyclic carbonates with excellent yields (89-99%). A solid/liquid interfacial hydrogen-bond assisted mechanism was proposed to account for its high efficiency.

Among the issues that restrict the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of quantum-dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs), insufficient catalytic activity and stability of counter electrodes (CEs) are critical but challenging ones. The state-of-the-art Cu/Cu2S CEs still suffer from mechanical instability and uncertainty due to the reaction of copper and electrolyte. Herein, ITO@Cu2S core-shell nanowire arrays were developed to fabricate CEs for QDSSCs, which have no such issues in Cu/Cu2S CEs. These nanowire arrays exhibited small charge transfer resistance and sheet resistance, and provided more active catalytic sites and easy accessibility for electrolyte due to the three-dimensional structure upon use as CEs. More interestingly, it was found that the interface of ITO/Cu2S significantly affected the performance of ITO@Cu2S nanowire array CEs. By varying synthetic methods, a series of ITO@Cu2S nanowire arrays were prepared to investigate the influence of ITO/Cu2S interface on their performance. The results showed that ITO@Cu2S nanowire array CEs with a continuous Cu2S nanocrystal shell fabricated via an improved cation exchange route exhibited excellent and thickness-dependent performance. The PCE of corresponding QDSSCs increased by 11.6 and 16.5% compared to that with the discrete Cu2S nanocrystal and the classic Cu/Cu2S CE, respectively, indicating its promising potential as a new type of CE for QDSSCs.

A sandwichlike magnesium silicate/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite (MgSi/RGO) with high adsorption efficiency of organic dye and lead ion was synthesized by a hydrothermal approach. MgSi nanopetals were formed in situ on both sides of RGO sheets. The nanocomposite with good dispersion of nanopetals exhibits a high specific surface area of 450 m(2)/g and a good mass transportation property. Compared to MgSi and RGO, the mechanical stability and adsorption capacity of the nanocomposite is significantly improved due to the synergistic effect. The maximum adsorption capacities for methylene blue and lead ion are 433 and 416 mg/g, respectively.

Quantum-dot-sensitized solar cell (QDSSC) has been considered as an alternative to new generation photovoltaics, but it still presents very low power conversion efficiency. Besides the continuous effort on improving photoanodes and electrolytes, the focused investigation on charge transfer at interfaces and the rational design for counter electrodes (CEs) are recently receiving much attention. Herein, core-shell nanowire arrays with tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) nanowire core and Cu2S nanocrystal shell (ITO@Cu2S) were dedicatedly designed and fabricated as new efficient CEs for QDSSCs in order to improve charge collection and transport and to avoid the intrinsic issue of copper dissolution in popular and most efficient Cu/Cu2S CEs. The high-quality tunnel junctions formed between n-type ITO nanowires and p-type Cu2S nanocrystals led to the considerable decrease in sheet resistance and charge transfer resistance and thus facilitated the electron transport during the operation of QDSSCs. The three-dimensional structure of nanowire arrays provided high surface area for more active catalytic sites and easy accessibility for an electrolyte. As a result, the power conversion efficiency of QDSSCs with the designed ITO@Cu2S CEs increased by 84.5 and 33.5% compared to that with planar Au and Cu2S CEs, respectively.

A hierarchical core-shell-satellite structured composite system Fe3O4@MS-NH2@Pd, which was composed of Pd nanoparticles well-dispersed on an amino group functionalized mesoporous silica (MS-NH2) nanosphere, and superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles scattered inside the silica sphere, was prepared by using a facile procedure. The composite combined the catalytic properties of amino groups and Pd nanoparticles with superparamagnetic properties of magnetite into a single platform. This integrated nanosystem acted as an efficient magnetically recyclable noble metal-base multifunctional nanocatalyst and showed excellent catalytic activity, selectivity and stability for the direct synthesis of α-alkylated nitriles under mild conditions through facile one-pot multistep cascade reaction sequences.

Two kinds of multifunctional nanocomposites, SBA-15-NH2/Pd-p and SBA-15-NH2/Pd-f, with platelet-like and fiber-like morphologies, respectively, were fabricated by immobilizing Pd NPs onto amine-functionalized SBA-15. Some of the amino groups acted as anchoring sites for Pd NPs, whilst the remaining groups acted as Brønsted basic sites. As a result, the composites served as excellent multifunctional heterogeneous catalysts for one-pot multistep cascade reaction sequences. Moreover, when diffusion was the rate-determine step, SBA-15-NH2/Pd-p, with small mesopores, was superior to the fiber-like control sample, owing to its short diffusion length, a lower possibility of pore clogging, and better mass transportation for the reaction species during the catalysis., (Copyright © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Layered structure: α-Fe2 O3 nanodisks with a layered structure assembled from nanoplates were produced by a hydrothermal method. The simple, low-cost method used silicate anions as capping ligands, which selectively adsorbed onto the {0001} facet of α-Fe2 O3 and terminated the growth along the [0001] direction, leading to platelike building units. Background: P2Y1 and P2Y12 receptors are expressed in platelet membranes and are involved in ADP-induced platelet aggregation. Genetic polymorphisms of P2Y1 and P2Y12 play a major role in the variation of ADP-induced platelet aggregation and in response in antiplatelet therapy., Objective: To evaluate the allele frequencies of P2Y1 and P2Y12 genetic polymorphisms in a Korean population and to assess their role in ADP (5 μmol/L)-induced maximal platelet aggregation., Methods: P2Y1 (c.1622A>G) and P2Y12 (i-139C>T, i-744T>C, i-ins801, c.52G>T, c.34C>T) polymorphisms were analyzed in 158 Korean healthy participants using pyrosequencing methods. Their ADP-induced maximal platelet aggregation was assessed by the turbidometric method., Results: The observed allele frequencies of P2Y1 and P2Y12 were as follows: 0.3101 for P2Y1 c.1622A>G; 0.1804 for P2Y12 i-139C>T, 0.1804 for i-744T>C, 0.1804 for i-801insA, 0.1266 for P2Y12 c.52G>T, and 0.2658 for P2Y12 c.34C>T. ADP-induced maximal platelet aggregation was not influenced by the P2Y1 c.1622A>G polymorphism and was also not affected by three intronic P2Y12 polymorphisms and the P2Y12 c.34C>T polymorphism. However, the P2Y12 c.52G>T polymorphism caused a substantial difference in ADP-induced maximal platelet aggregation (62.75% for c.52GG, 66.27% for c.52GT, and 80.60% for c.52TT; P=0.0092)., Conclusions: The P2Y1 and P2Y12 genes were very polymorphic in a Korean population. Three intronic P2Y12 polymorphisms (i-139C>T, i-744T>C, i-801insA) were in complete linkage disequilibrium but not with the c.52C>T polymorphism in this population. Maximal platelet aggregation in response to ADP is associated with the c.52C>T polymorphism but not with the three intronic polymorphisms or the P2Y1 c.1622A>T polymorphism., (© 2013.)

Flower-like MgO is a highly effective catalyst for the synthesis of dimethyl carbonate through the transesterification method, and coating the catalyst with mesoporous silica significantly enhances the stability of the MgO catalyst.

A novel layered zinc silicate/carbon composite was fabricated through carbon embedment into the interlayers of zinc silicate through a hydrothermal method. The interlayer space could be effectively tuned from 1.22 to 3.37 nm by controlling the amount of carbon precursors. Such a layered zinc silicate/carbon structure promoted the lithium ions and electron transportation within the nanostructures, while the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) network improved the conductivity between nanostructures. Such a 3-D carbon based conductive network improved zinc silicates' lithium storage property. After 50 cycles, two composite samples with different carbon loadings showed 778 mA h/g and 704 mA h/g, respectively.

A composited anode material with combined layered α-Fe2O3 nanodisks and reduced graphene oxide was produced by an in situ hydrothermal method for lithium-ion batteries. As thin as about 5-nm-thickness α-Fe2O3 nanosheets, open channels, and face-to-face tight contact with reduced graphene oxide via oxygen bridges made the composite have a good cyclability and rate performance, especially at high charge/discharge rates.

A new nanoreactor-type composite catalyst with Au NPs embedded into the inner wall of the mesoporous TiO2 hollow spheres resulted in an enhanced synergistic effect and superb thermal stability of highly dispersed Au NPs.

Through a simple polymeric carbon assisted method, a yolk-shell structured Fe(2)O(3)@mesoporous SiO(2) nanoreactor was synthesized and showed excellent activity in Fenton-like reactions toward methylene blue total degradation.

Objective: This work aims to investigate the therapeutic regimen of brain metastatic cancers and the relationship between clinical features and prognosis., Methods: Clinical data of 184 patients with brain metastatic cancers were collected and analysed for the relationship between survival time and age, gender, primary diseases, quantity of brain metastatic foci, their position, extra cranial lesions, and therapeutic regimens., Results: The average age of onset was 59.1 years old. The median survival time (MST) was 15.0 months, and the patients with breast cancer as the primary disease had the longest survival time. Females had a longer survival time than males. Patients with meningeal metastasis had extremely short survival time. Those with less than 3 brain metastatic foci survived longer than patients with more than 3. The MST of patients receiving radiotherapy only and the patients receiving chemotherapy only were all 10.0 months while the MST of patients receiving combination therapy was 16.0 months. Multiple COX regression analysis demonstrated that gender, primary diseases, and quantity of brain metastatic foci were independent prognostic factors for brain metastatic cancers., Conclusions: Chemotherapy is as important as radiotherapy in the treatment of brain metastatic cancer. Combination therapy is the best treatment mode. Male gender, brain metastatic cancers originating in the gastrointestinal tract, more than 3 metastatic foci, and involvement of meninges indicate a worse prognosis.

A core-shell structured mesoporous silica nanosphere with antagonistic acid and basic sites spatially isolated and designated diffusion path was fabricated and served as an efficient acid-base bifunctional catalyst for one-pot cascade reaction sequences with excellent activity and selectivity.

X-shaped goethite iron oxide crystals were synthesized by a surfactant-free mild hydrothermal synthesis method with the aid of fluorine ions. The X-shaped goethite crystals could readily self-assemble into microscopic hollow spheres through an oil-water interface induced self-assembly method. X-shaped hematite crystals were obtained by phase topotactic transformation of the goethite precursors. The gas sensor properties of X-shaped hematite iron oxide were investigated, and the mechanism for excellent sensor properties was discussed.

Two novel adsorbents to remove excess arsenate and arsenite in the drinking water were prepared for the first time by grafting monoamine and diamine, respectively, and then coordinating Fe(3+) on silica gel that was obtained using sol-gel method with two-step acid-base catalysis. It was found that both adsorbents had mesoporous structure, large specific surface, and high amino and iron content according to N(2) adsorption isotherms, FTIR, XPS, and NMR analysis. The removal ability and adsorption rate of the adsorbents were very high for both As(V) and As(III). Langmuir and Freundlich models were used to fit the adsorption isotherm and investigate the adsorption mechanism. A nanoreactor with temperature-responsive poly(N-isopopylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) coated on the external pore mouth of mesoporous silica hollow spheres and Au nanoparticles at the internal pore mouth were fabricated. Such spatial separation allows both Au nanoparticles and PNIPAM to function without interfering with each other. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, and temperature-dependent optical transmittance curves demonstrate successful grafting of PNIPAM. This nanoreactor shows repeated on/off catalytic activity switched by temperature control. It shows excellent catalytic activity toward 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) reduction at 30 °C [below lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAM] with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 14.8 h(-1). However, when the temperature was 50 °C (above LCST), the TOF dropped to 2.4 h(-1). Kinetic studies indicated that diffusion into the mesopores of the catalyst was the key factor, and the temperature-responsive behavior of PNIPAM was able to control this diffusion.

A facile method based on microwave-assisted solvothermal process has been developed to synthesize flowerlike MgO precursors, which were then transformed to MgO by simple calcinations. All the chemicals used (magnesium nitrate, urea, and ethanol) were low cost and environmentally benign. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution TEM, and N(2) adsorption-desorption methods. These flowerlike MgO nanostructures had high surface area and showed superb adsorption properties for Pb(II) and Cd(II), with maximum capacities of 1980 mg/g and 1500 mg/g, respectively. All these values are significantly higher than those reported on other nanomaterials. A new adsorption mechanism involving solid-liquid interfacial cation exchange between magnesium and lead or cadmium cations was proposed and confirmed.

Say it with flowers: Flower-like Fe(3)O(4)@Fe(OH)(3) composite catalysts show good activity and stability in the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and CO(2). Flowerlike α-Fe(2)O(3) nanostructures were synthesized via a template-free microwave-assisted solvothermal method. All chemicals used were low-cost compounds and environmentally benign. These flowerlike α-Fe(2)O(3) nanostructures had high surface area and abundant hydroxyl on their surface. When tested as an adsorbent for arsenic and chromium removal, the flowerlike α-Fe(2)O(3) nanostructures showed excellent adsorption properties. The adsorption mechanism for As(V) and Cr(VI) onto flowerlike α-Fe(2)O(3) nanostructures was elucidated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and synchrotron-based X-ray absorption near edge structure analysis. The results suggested that ion exchange between surface hydroxyl groups and As(V) or Cr(VI) species was accounted for by the adsorption. With maximum capacities of 51 and 30 mg g(-1) for As(V) and Cr(VI), respectively, these low-cost flowerlike α-Fe(2)O(3) nanostructures are an attractive adsorbent for the removal of As(V) and Cr(VI) from water.

Objective: To evaluate the safety and therapeutic efficacy of target percutaneous laser disc decompression (T-PLDD) for the treatment of lumbar disc herniation., Background Data: PLDD using the Nd:YAG laser has been regarded as an effective alternative treatment for disc herniation. However, all the previous studies were concentrated on vaporizing the nucleus pulposus in the intervertebral space. We hypothesize that insertion of the needle into the extruded part of the nucleus pulposus will decrease its volume and provide superior clinical effects compared to therapies that decrease the volume of the intradiscal nucleus pulposus., Materials and Methods: A total of 25 patients suffering from posterolateral extruded but nonsequestered lumbar intervertebral disc herniation were treated with T-PLDD. After treatment, the patients were followed up and the therapeutic effect was assessed at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months using the modified MacNab criteria., Results: The success rate was 80.0% (18 of 25), 88.0% (22 of 25), 92.0% (23 of 25), and 92.0% (23 of 25) at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months respectively. No serious complications occurred in any of the patients. Furthermore, we did not observe any neurological sequelae., Conclusions: T-PLDD can significantly decrease pain and improve function of patients who have extruded but nonsequestered lumbar intervertebral disc herniation.

High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a multifunctional protein with intranuclear and extracellular functions. Although HMGB1 is overexpressed in approximately 85% of gastric cancers, the role of HMGB1 in gastric cancer biology remains unclear. In this study, we investigate the effect of downregulation of HMGB1 on the biological behavior of gastric cancer cells. MGC-803 gastric cancer cells were transduced with HMGB1-specific RNAi lentiviral vectors. Real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analysis of HMGB1 mRNA and protein, respectively, validated the silencing effects. HMGB1-specific silencing significantly decreased cell proliferation. The impact on proliferation was observed at the cell cycle level--the number of cells in the G0/G1 phase increased, whereas that in S and G2/M phases decreased. Cell cycle changes were accompanied by decreases in cyclin D1 expression. Furthermore, HMGB1 silencing sensitized cells to apoptosis that was induced by oxaliplatin and mediated by the caspase-3 pathway. Finally, silencing of HMGB1 expression significantly reduced cellular metastatic ability and MMP-9 expression in MGC-803 cells. In summary, HMGB1 not only plays an essential role in the proliferation and invasion of MGC-803 cells but also represents a potential target for the therapeutic intervention of gastric cancer., (Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Highly ordered mesoporous aluminas and calcium-doped aluminas were synthesized through a facile and reproducible method. Their fluoride adsorption characteristics, including adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics, the effect of pH and co-existing anions were investigated. These materials exhibited strong affinity to fluoride ions and extremely high defluoridation capacities. The highest defluoridation capacity value reached 450 mg/g. These materials also showed superb arsenic removal ability. 1g of mesoporous alumina was able to treat 200 kg of arsenic contaminated water with a pH value of 7, reducing the concentration of arsenate from 100 ppb to 1 ppb., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystalline porous solids with well-defined two- or three-dimensional molecular structures. Although the structural regularity provides this new type of porous material with high potentials in catalysis, no example has been presented so far. Herein, we report the first application of a new COF material, COF-LZU1, for highly efficient catalysis. The easily prepared imine-linked COF-LZU1 possesses a two-dimensional eclipsed layered-sheet structure, making its incorporation with metal ions feasible. Via a simple post-treatment, a Pd(II)-containing COF, Pd/COF-LZU1, was accordingly synthesized, which showed excellent catalytic activity in catalyzing the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction. The superior utility of Pd/COF-LZU1 in catalysis was elucidated by the broad scope of the reactants and the excellent yields (96-98%) of the reaction products, together with the high stability and easy recyclability of the catalyst. Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was synthesized under H(2)/Ar treatment from 100 °C to 900 °C. RGO-300 shows excellent sensitivity to H(2) and a dual sensing mode was observed. The balance between the chemical adsorption capacity and electronic conductivity, and the dominance of either electrons or holes are the key factors.
